But maybe not. You’re in the stage of the game where the Ottomans are starting to blob out and will become the horrifying, unstoppable monster that all EU4 players hate, except the noobs who play them. You say Hungary is out, and it might have been a better choice to switch over to ally Poland if possible (I can’t remember what your rival/diplomacy situation is) because the Poland/Lithuania one-two punch is great for going after the Turks. Muscovy when it’s big is also fantastic, because the Ottomans will burn all their manpower sieging them and fighting their metric fuckton of troops, because they brilliantly invade Russia during the winter a lot.
Tips:
Mamluks at only 14% is a good thing. It means they’re probably not going to peace out immediately if the Ottomans want to turn around to counter your attack. The Ottomans are unlikely to throw them a white peace, which they will accept, so that means they’re likely to tie down at least some of the Ottoman troops (or the Ottomans will direct their forces at you, making it so that the Mamluks will start sieging them if their army hasn’t been stackwiped. You can check for this in the country information lists). The Ottomans may wig out and start trying fight on both fronts at once, running over to chase your armies off before running back to the Mamluks. Unlike with a player, the Mamluks probably won’t be smart enough to escape. If they split their forces you’re in a great position, and you’ll have to try to get Austria to help you jump on the weaker army if possible.
You do have offensive, and if the Turks haven’t taken any military ideas that will help to negate their advantage (but not completely).
Using attrition to wear them down at this stage in the game will have mixed results. If they stack their entire force limit together, yeah, they’ll be taking probably around 3-5% attrition per month, so it might be worth it to have them chase you around for a bit. Again, the AI is garbage at managing attrition, I once killed half the Ottoman army by attrition alone in my Ethiopia game by constantly getting them to chase two twenty stacks around the Sinai desert area with a sixty stack.
Allies can be told priority targets by clicking on the enemy province and there’s a square where you can prioritize what provinces Austria will focus on. The AI WILL NOT slavishly follow your commands however, they’ll still make strategic decisions based on the situation, and will aim for the priorities you set based off of circumstances (i.e. if there’s a big army on or next to the province that it can’t beat, it won’t try to siege it).
If you can get military access through Hungary, you might be able to bum rush Constantinople and siege it down. This has the advantage of giving the Ottomans a strait crossing penalty to their dice rolls if they try to attack you, BUT higher level generals can negate strait crossing penalties with maneuver bonuses. Which the Ottomans usually have. Or they’ll march completely around the Black Sea if they can get military access. Still, it’s major warscore if you do it, drives their exhaustion up, and it means that you might be even able to white peace out if you think you’re fucked. Speaking of which:
If you siege down a lot of territory before they get back there to counter you, and they crush you and Austria in a major battle, you might still have war score to peace out, depending on the Ottomans’ situation. It might take a couple of years, but if you have a positive warscore and think an Ottoman win is inevitable, but they’ll accept a white peace, just throw in the towel. It’s better than having them stomp you and force you to release Bosnia or something.
Mercenaries and loans are your friends. If the Turks turn around and start responding to you, it’s not a bad idea to just load up on mercenaries, even over your force limit, for a decisive battle to throw them off-guard. I’m not sure what their manpower is like (again, you can check this in the country information lists) but getting them to lose several tens of thousands is significant early game. You’ll have to deal with the loans later, but if it puts you a step ahead in the long run by getting some provinces from the Turks it’s fine.
I’d say go for it, but with a caveat: sometimes you learn more about EU4 by losing than winning.

OK, sounds good. I’m not sure why I’d need access through Hungary – rush for Constantinople is straight through Turkish Macedonia and Thrace. I was not thinking of doing it due to it being lvl 3 fort, and I don’t dare trying to blockade due to the huge disparity of navies. In my war with Walachia I learned that assaulting Forts in this game is even worse than CK2!
Otto manpower is not awesome (by their standards)- somewhere around 26K, so huge battles would cripple them for years. He’s also way under Force Limit for some reason (banking MP?) and his treasury isn’t great, but he’s not in loan territory yet. Honestly, feels like he should be way stronger than he is right now. Also, if he took “Conquer Serbia” mission, he shouldn’t be guaranteeing Venice and invading Mameluks, but who am I to judge the Sultan?
How bad is going over Force Limit in general? I was thinking of raising enough armies to have full combat width if battle comes, and to be able to carpet-siege better. I have about 17.5K manpower in reserve – or is it too late to raise, and better to bank manpower to replace losses?

rush for Constantinople is straight through Turkish Macedonia and Thrace.
If there’s forts in the way they block your movement.
In my war with Walachia I learned that assaulting Forts in this game is even worse than CK2!
Don’t assault, it’s not worth it, unless their garrison is absurdly low, i.e. hundreds.
Otto manpower is not awesome (by their standards)- somewhere around 26K, so huge battles would cripple them for years.
That is great. If Austrian manpower is high your odds just went up substantially.
How bad is going over Force Limit in general? I was thinking of raising enough armies to have full combat width if battle comes, and to be able to carpet-siege better. I have about 17.5K manpower in reserve – or is it too late to raise, and better to bank manpower to replace losses?
It’s pretty damn rough on your economy, there’s math on the wiki to show how costs for unit maintenance increase for any unit over the force limit, I think it’s something like three times the cost per unit if you have double your force limit.
Bank manpower, and use mercenaries. Money is the least useful resource most of the time, it’s only a worry when you’re running a huge deficit or in a loan-taking death spiral.
Pan Zagloba
on February 23, 2017 at 6:36 pm
But mercenaries count against force limit, right? Their advantage is recruitment speed, and not using up manpower. Or am I wrong? I did see advice to “merc infantry, raise horse and gun” as a way to get best bang for the buck. I will need to do calculation to see if 25% (+5) will lead to quick bankruptcy – I think I’m currently positive at full maint, and can be barely profitable at 5 over limit.
And thanks for the reminder, fuck Fort ZOC thing. Fuck it up the ass of whatever dick came up with it.
John Titor
on February 23, 2017 at 6:48 pm
Mercenaries still count as force limit, and you’re right, their advantage is that they take from your money pool, not your manpower pool. Manpower is way more precious than money in 95% of scenarios. I’d work with what I have, siege down a fort, and if the Ottomans show up (and Austria is nearby to pull them in) I’d spam a mercenary army together for an attack, then disband most of them immediately afterwards.
fuck Fort ZOC thing. Fuck it up the ass of whatever dick came up with it.
That would be Wiz. And it used to be that there was no ZOC, but every province had a fort. I somewhat prefer the current system.

How to kill the Turk, by John Titor
After reviewing your scenario…well…
But maybe not. Ya, Poe got to me too. I forgot about that. I haven’t read him for over 30 years.
Hey everyone. Nice little interweb you’ve got here. Be a pity if someone happened to it.
If you know what I mean. Who does a frog have to kill around here to get a blowjob anyway?
Norm!
Hello, Warren, here is some frog porn just for you.
It ain’t easy bein’ thicc.
Thank god for Thursdays.
OT: To the powers that be
Is it possible to move the “Back/Next” links to the top or the bottom of the page? I hate having to scroll over miles of appalling female flesh to find them.
Home/End keys get no love anymore.
I didn’t see Twink Tuesday. Is HM not to be trusted?
Paging Dr Whom. Dr Whom to the pink courtesy phone.
I didn’t promise it would be at this site.

That snake was crazy thicc, tho.
I’ll be in my bunk.
“Is HM not to be trusted”
You must be new.
It was mostly rhetorical :p
I’m reminded that Wiener Wednesday was kind of flaccid too.
Geeze dude, happy belated wiener Wednesdays. Have a fat one.
I do like it ruff.
A new future ex-girlfriend. Thanks!
Wow. I like this one way better than last Thursday’s.
The Roseanne Barr photo shoot?
Thanks for the mammaries.
