Happy Ash Wednesday. I was wondering why all the old people at the grocery store had tattoos on their foreheads. And I may or may not have bothered to wear contacts on that trip.
Any American techies who want a free trip to Hobbition, New Zealand will pick up your tab for a job interview. This totally isn’t a timeshare scam, they swear.
As ever, technology is making humans obsolete. Take up your sabots and destroy those power looms ordering kiosks! The Rise of the Useless Class should be about people who make their living giving TED talks and doing jack shit.
Ouch, relentless self-promoter-in-chief gets in fewer than half as many references to himself in his first address to Congress than his predecessor. Terrible!
Someone thinks America needs a military department just for space. Would you like to know more?
Tucker Carlson shows Bill Nye that he’s no science guy and unworthy of the bow-tie.
There was a Shikha today and usual exasperation in the comments along with promises to leave the old place. So clean this place up, we might have company over.
Do we have to? Do we really want to attract the type of people that would require this place be cleaned up?
Giggles*drags list and file cabinet over here with cat poop attached*
I shall prepare the hentai pictures.
I’ll just put this over here.
I was stupid enough to put on Instagram that I sell rope so I get non stop friend requests and follows from that rope fetish crowd.
NYPost had an article when 50 Shades came out talking about how there was a spike in women coming in asking for softer ropes
I don’t know why I find the idea of “local hardware guy as sex toy vendor” really funny, but I do.
Does buying… hemp… count?
I won’t clean my roof for your guests! It’s not like they’ll be in my room.
Your room at max capacity or what?
always.
What does your roof have to do with anything? Is it ready to collapse?
I really don’t even know why I typed f instead of m.
(hit submit before I typed this, then forgot to hit submit on this. I’m not exactly the brightest bulb)
Shikia retweeting Mary Stack, and her entire rant about Berkeley, was my last straw on the other site. So it doesn’t surprise me that she would be so for others.
Can you (or someone) explain to me what the story is with Mary Stack? I only started going to The Other Site in 2012, and whenever I’d ask, people would react as though it’s something that should not or cannot be discussed in detail.
her youtube
She trolled the comments. Copied everything that had been written on the page, and post it as a comment. She’s probably the reason for registration and the account authorizations. It got angrier with time.
“It’s a Shikha. Of course it’s company policy never to, imply ownership in the event of a Shikha… always use the indefinite article a Shikha, never your Shikha.”
Yeah, we should ask the really embarrassing people to make themselves scarce.
Hey, why did everyone get awkwardly quiet?
In the Shikha article, she basically bashes the Canadian immigration system. No immigration system is good enough for Shikha.
It’s dumber than that. Dalmia basically argues that because there’s a wage gap between Mexico and the United States, the only thing the United States can do is basically let people in illegally and do nothing about it. Of course she completely ignores the reality of Mexico being such a shit hole specifically because they use immigration to the United States to effectively export their discontent and ensure they never have to reform or actually improve as a nation. In Dalmialand, if you see a problem, the correct answer is to keep doing, and even expand, what you’re doing that’s helping cause the problem in the first place.
Spot on.
I always wonder how often talk about immigration or immigrant specifically means mexico, which is a whole different deal. if you think anglos hate mexicans, talk to salvadoreans or nicaraguans about mexico sometime.
Exactly.
I think 99% of what people mean when they talk about “immigration” is basically “mexicans”. And its not “racial” = its basically a failed-state on our borders. We politely avoid talking about that fact and somehow the media has coaxed us into using the language the politicians (pre-Trump) use.
there is no stopping immigration from mexico. i don’t think anyone would actually want to, if they really thought about it for a while.
I think that’s a false choice. I don’t think the problem is “stopping” anything, so much as making it less like what it is, which is more like a “silent refugee population”
If you’re looking to make New Zealand your permanent home and have skills, experience or capital that are in short supply locally, we’d love to hear from you.
I work for one of their biggest employers. I wonder if I can get a transfer.
You work for Big Sheep?
Big Bird
Probably. from what I understand employer sponsorship is the easiest way in.
Or lots of cash.
Tucker Carlson shows Bill Nye that he’s no science guy and unworthy of the bow-tie.
mmmmaaaan, I can’t wait to watch this.
Watching now…Tucker is almost dvr worthy.
He’s an intellectually bankrupt mental midget guilty of peddling the Rapture-style C in CAGW. He has the sciencey chops of a sophomore undergrad summer intern trying to speak with masterful authority over one if the most insanely complicated multivariable simulation problems I could conceive of at this point. Outputs of all human economic activity are but a subset of this chaotic system with immeasurable numbers of of initial conditions. Bill NYE is the prototypical arrogant gassbag.
Don’t sugarcoat it. Tell us what you really think.
Sir, he’s a jerk.
So…would?
Check this out, Bill Nye is so fantastically blinded by his own fart-cupping hubris that he’s arguing a position that can’t even be buttressed with the benefit of known historical correlation mabey sorta might be giving some clue about general possible future trends. Mofo thinks he’s in the precog gang.
He also thinks he’s a scientist. Wasn’t that a show? The Pretender.
God damn, you know, it just occurred to me a particular fact that makes him extra pathetic: he’s trying to be the big swinging sales dick hawking the catastrophic aspect of this nonsense, and yet, is that he’s not even balls-deep in the field. He’s the scientist’s equivalent to a dingleberry on the hairy asshole of the field. A pathetic fart-sniffing parrot.
I forget, is a 6 degree F temperature rise at the equator actually catastrophic or does it merely change the survival envelope? Isn’t Nye a Mech E? I’d think he’d have had thermodynamics and heat transfer, which means he should be capable of doing a quick system balance of the earth-sun system and determine that any kind of ‘runaway’ global warming is impossible.
Nye is used to be on TV up against some half-crazed guy that thinks dinosaurs roamed the Earth 5,000 years ago. When someone actually says, OK, I’ll concede some of your argument, now let’s talk details, he’s in way over his head. Tucker pwned him big time. Nye was actually talking in circles and and one point appears to indicate that the climate wouldn’t change at all if not for mankind.
Nye was actually talking in circles and and one point appears to indicate that the climate wouldn’t change at all if not for mankind.
Yes, and then he said climate change stopped us from going into an ice age, but no the climate would have stayed just as it was in 1750. He was talking out his ass. The fact he is taken seriously is the scary thing.
He does belabor the point, and unfortunately only about one minute after he had asserted that from 20,000 years ago to about 250 years ago the climate changed quite a bit, and he even implies that we “should be” in another glaciation, before taking the tack that if not for “human activity” (whatever that’s supposed to mean), the climate today would be exactly what it was in 1750. Which is blatantly absurd no matter what your beliefs about CAGW.
You can actually see his face flash his moments of “shit – I need to get my Scientific-Authority-Face back on, I’m talking nonsense!”
He wouldn’t come off as such an insufferable dick if it wasn’t for his overreaching.
The fact that Carlson, a guy without any scientific knowledge and little quickness of wit, rattled him so, tells me all I need to know. If he ever gets the balls (I doubt it)to debate a really articulate and knowledgeable skeptic, he won’t last 2 minutes before he totally loses it. Carlson had plenty of opportunities, but didn’t have the basic knowledge or debate skill to take him down. So what it looked like to most unbiased people is 2 unskilled wrestlers wallowing in the mud.
^ This. I would love to see Nye try to take on Patrick Michaels. All Carlson seems able to do is look confused and skeptical, which is fine if you already agree with him, but as someone else mentioned, Nye’s supporters think he literally destroyed Carlson. Talk about a cripple fight.
And Tucker’s strategy is so obvious. You’d better know your shit back-to-front because he’s going to find exactly what your weaknesses are before the show and pry into them with a crowbar and hammer you relentlessly when you can’t give an answer.
Tucker used to be really obnoxious and useless. Somewhere along the way, he must have realized that he couldn’t reach people if he couldn’t argue worth a damn, and he seems to have studied up on it.
And Nye’s evasions are exactly what Carlson wanted to show everyone. Al Gore made all kinds of stupid predictions that turned out to be horseshit and as a similar popularizer of climate alarmism. Showing those up damaged his political position heavily. Nye figures he’s too damned clever to get caught by that trap, so he refuses to commit to figures that will later be held against him. But then he looks like he has no interest in the actual science of it because he’s unwilling to commit (and probably doesn’t know which of the many competing models to believe himself) and unwilling to concede that falsifiability is key to the Popperian philosophy of science (which most scientists subscribe to). An unfalsifiable conclusion isn’t scientific, and Bill Nye is exposed as a hack.
I loved Bill Nye as a kid but then you go back and watch some of it. It’s a lot of fluff.
My middle school science teacher loved him but honestly I don’t remember much at all despite watching it… certainly not enough to get all nostalgic like many apparently are. And even if I were, the whole Gaia gulag nonsense would have turned me right off.
I remember being excited to watch TV in school.
I had this earth sciences teacher in 8th grade who I thought was really cool, and he had a way of getting kids excited about science. Even compelled me to buy a copy of A Brief History of Time. And then recently I recalled that douchebag made some wild proclamations like if a space mission were to send him to Mars, he could “guarantee” that he would turn up fossil remains. He also predicted that by the time all of us would have reached high school (this would have been the bright shiny year of 1997), that he was certain as shit that all of us would have to ride “the big yellow banana” (yeah yeah, euphemism) to school due to petroleum shortage. So Mr. McKinney was a peak oil zealot too.
I used to have a link to a great blog post where a guy had collected various “WE’RE RUNNING OUT OF OIL!!!” doom mongering. We’ve been on the verge of running out of oil for a century now according to Very Serious Thinkers who started Their Very Serious Thinking about it during the 20s.
You will be shocked to discover that these Very Serious Thinkers usually believe more government is the solution.
If you find the link, I would be interested in seeing it. I’ve only heard about the peak oil hysteria closer to mid-century.
Here’s an article from Reason about it.
http://reason.com/archives/2006/05/05/peak-oil-panic
Nye was never as good as Beekman.
+, I need to find some Beekman’s World for my daughter in a few years.
Beekman’s world rocked.
Who?
These guys beat the socks off of Nye and Beekman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mggl7cC8iys
Beekman is not dead but he is old.
That’s funny, but the real answer is Mr. Wizard’s World.
I don’t know who he is, but, like Bill Nye, I’ll assume he absolutely pales in comparison to the one true TV science man, Mr. Wizard.
Nickelodeon used to do early morning Mr Wizard reruns and they were fantastic.
You only beat me because I was trying to find a good, usable clip. Apparently all the full episodes are for sale on YouTube.
I used to get a little kid boner to his lady friend.
My favorite TV scientist.
My fucking wife roasts me all the time and say I look like him.
And by far the smartest. Most excellent avatar change Tundra btw.
Thanks! The movie recently turned 40. Still solid!
Big whiff on Dana Scully, there Tundra.
Two bow-ties go in, one bow-tie leaves.
Tucker should’ve had Nye’s bow removed on set and added to the trophy wall.
The only thing that would make it good enough is if Carlson grabbed the smug douchebag by the bowtie and slapped him silly.
My Derpbook said Nye totally destroyed that wingnut Carlson.
Vinyards in Northern France. Take that to the bank, bucko. DESTROYED
Also, IIRC, Britain had a thriving viticulture industry from the Roman invasion until the mini ice-age in the 12th/13th century.
I like this guy.
If he’s got any seniority at that firm, he probably emailed that from his private island.
Bush nominated him for an appeals court seat in 2001. The nomination languished until 2003 before he withdrew. Democrats didn’t want to confirm him because of his politics; they thought he was being groomed for a SCOTUS seat. He went to Gibson Dunn after that. He’s argued a ton of cases before SCOTUS.
So it’s pretty safe to say he’s got multiple private islands to choose from.
They didn’t want the first Hispanic SC Justice to be appointed by a Republican.
He went to Gibson Dunn after that.
I loved their first album, but I thought their sophomore effort just didn’t have that boot scootin’ kick.
Ouch, relentless self-promoter-in-chief gets in fewer than half as many references to himself in his first address to Congress than his predecessor.
Terrible!Classy!Column about the aforementioned Bill Nye interview.
Oh you mean Scott Adams the insufferable shitlord who is more insufferable because he correctly predicted the election while sabotaging his public speaking career? I like that guy.
Bill Nye, the scientitian.
When he said, “We in the science community…,” SP had to hold me back from flinging my laptop across the room.
3%er denialist!

Man accused of unwanted toe-sucking, foot massaging at mall
sexual imposition
My jokerizer just seized up. Little help here?
You’re just a sweet tranvestite?
“Nobody expects the sexual imposition!”
shrimping
There’s a word for everything.
*checks urban dictionary.* The things I learn here.
Funny how no one complains until the foot massage is over.
Appropos
Grab its motherfucking toe, she heard a voice say.
Hmm.
How does ‘unwanted toe-sucking’ not end with ‘kicked in the fucking teeth several times’?
I think maybe it wasn’t as unwanted as it was claimed to be.
Tucker Carlson shows Bill Nye,
On my facebook this was like a shitty rorshach test.
le sigh
Did they at least conclude nobody should be wearibg bowties?
I liked Matt Welch in a bowtie. But I’m just a contrarian.
Does that mean you have to decide what it smells like as well as what it looks like?
Two people in Indiana found out I live in California then asked me what I thought about Trump with a shit-eating grin. Hoosiers are funny.
I remember in August a liberal telling me that Pence was really unpopular in his home state, and obviously Hillary! was great and Drumpf was teh suck, so clearly Indiana was in play.
Video Games Conference Holds Talk On ‘Making Games Under Fascism’
This talk is given by Dr. Bonnie Ruberg, a self-described “scholar, educator, and community organizer” for “social justice” who is a soon-to-be-professor at UC Irvine, and has never actually made any games, just a torrent of “research”–including organizing and co-founding a “Queerness and Games Conference” and co-editing a “Queer Games Studies” journal–solely along identity politics lines, hectoring other people about how they’re making games wrong.
She’s chosen to retweet a few folks that I’ve decided to take a cursory glance over, to see just how far this “virgins giving instruction on sex” self-gratulatory circlejerk rabbit hole goes. First up is a sociology grad student who is similarly identity politics obsessed, and I’m sure we’ve all read his groundbreaking work on “Affective Structuring and the Role of Race in XCOM” or “‘Procedurally and Fictively Relevant’: Exploring the Potential for Queer Content in Video Games” or ”The Dynamics of Interbeing and Monological Imperatives in Dick and Jane: A Study in Psychic Transrelational Gender Modes”. No games, though.
Next up I immediately notice is talking about “the way we make games” so when I see that, holy shit, maybe she’s actually apparently produced something, and one of her games has trigger warnings about transphobia and homophobia to start off with so I already know I’m in for a treat.
It’s a fucking HTML choose-your-own-adventure game. Clearly I need to update my resume with “game developer” because of the extremely primitive space exploration game that I wrote in BASIC back in in the 90s. But the real question is: can I sucker other people for funding based on that?
Her “Different Games” identity politics games “collective” has apparently not made anything, but it’s collaborated with “Dear Games”, which has made an RPG Maker game, that has featured at other self-congratulatory backpatting conferences but hasn’t exactly been blowing up the top sellers chart on Steam, if you get my drift.
Some of these pictures on their Twitter accounts have so many people… I’m wondering: who is paying for this shit?
Oh, and to finally top it off (and also because I’d had all I could take for a while–consider me triggered), I notice Ruberg retweeted “first they came for the neo-nazis, and i had a sufficiently nuanced worldview to realize that intolerance of intolerance is necessary & good”. I’m sure her definition of Nazi is… uh, very inclusive and diverse. That’s sounds like an appropriate way to put it. Rico Suave, if you’re reading this, take note.
(PS: since 2008 it seems like “nuance” is almost entirely used by people in a “piss down your back and tell you it’s raining while being insufferably smug about it” way.)
In gaming related nerd stuff I finally found a cheap New California Republic flag on Amazon. I always wanted one but didn’t want to pay more than 20 bucks for it. #RESIST
War. War never changes.
Fuck you NCR bear, stay out of Free Vegas. Unless you want to gamble, then we cool.
Where is this fascist rule?
Their games will suck.
Because they’re too stupid (or too smart) that good video games are empowerment escapism fantasy.
We want realism in games, we don’t want real-life bullshit games.
We’re trying to get the hell out of real life and be powerful.
And sometimes we want neither realism or real-life bullshit.
That is a seriously weird game, but I think any gamer should play it through once (it’s not that long) just for the experience.
Argh, wish I hadn’t typed this up first in Docs, which decided to do stupid fancy quote marks, messing up my href tags. Alas.
The higher ed bubble can’t pop fast enough.
The sooner the better, I’ve got two kids approaching college.
As much as they probably won’t want to, transferring credits from somewhere cheap the first two years is brilliant. tech colleges don’t have whatever stigma the community college might. If they want to go somewhere far, go to the tech school closest to the school they really want to go to for a year or two. If they’re in the same town, the social scene will be pretty intertwined. at least, that’s how it was in Burlington. I didn’t go to any school there, lived with people from champlain, went to parties with kids from UVM, champlain, and the now dead Burlington College (Thanks, Mrs. Sanders!).
or trade school.
It’s good advice. My son will probably be going to a hardcore nerd school (possibly one near you). He’s a junior, so we have some time yet.
Let me know If you guys come out for a visit!
For sure!
“Next up I immediately notice is talking about [em]“the way we make games”[/em] so when I see that, holy shit, maybe she’s actually apparently produced something”
Not necessarily. “Progressives” always say “we” when that pronoun really doesn’t apply… “The way we make games”. “How we as a society treat women.” “We let black men get murdered by police.” “Where we set the minimum wage.”
My theory? It’s Orwellian language designed to give some appearance of legitimacy to their efforts to butt into peoples’ lives. If “we as a society” decide everything, that gives perfect legitimacy to total government control over every aspect of our lives.
Ashes to Ashes,
Funk to Funky
We know MAJ Tom’s a junkie?
Since this is apparently yokeltarian paradise:
I’m building my first AR this weekend AND thinking about going back to church.
What’s the opposite of a cocktail* party and when should I expect an invite?
*pussyhead???
Tractor pull.
Yup, Tractor Pull is the best answer.
Demolition derby and figure 8 racing is much more prestigious in yokel land. Trust me
I wouldn’t know. I’m a gun-toting cosmo.
Gun-toting cosmos of the world, UNITE!
From my experience growing up in Kentucky, trucktor pulls only exist for 3 purposes: 1) fulfill the primal need for male competitiveness/stupidity 2) sell pork tenderloin sandwiches for the local FFA and 3) provide the perfect place for high school kids to screw without getting caught
Are any of those bad things?
local rodeos serve the same purposes (at least they did in rural Arkansas)
If you are interested i will teach you our ways
Don’t you mean left-turn racing?
Isnt that just called Racing??
Agreed, if you don’t say racin, you ain’t a real fan, there’s no … faking it.
Definitely demolition derby, and if you can fit in a rodeo the same weekend, you are at max yokel.
Mudbogging, followed by shooting appliances with high-powered rifles and tannerite.
About a week after last Halloween, I heard rifle shots as I was cooking dinner. I looked out and my neighbor was laying in his yard with some big giant rifle on a bipod. He had a pumpkin about 50 yds away on the hill. Next shot the thing exploded. I don’t know what he put in it, but it was awesome.
It’s BUS RACING or GTFO.
What about muddin’?
Instead of using a gun range like a cosmo, practice your shootin on stop signs.
Beer cans right after they have been drained of contents.
Someone thinks America needs a military department just for space. Would you like to know more?
Somebody hasn’t hear of the Outer Space Treaty.
Or even heard of it.
A treaty nobody ever believed or intended to honor.
Yeah, I have serious doubts that there aren’t weapons attached to some satellite already.
Almaz actually flew with a 23mm cannon.
Алмаз — это вечно
The OST forbids WMD platforms, not weapons in general. So the Soviets carrying their TP-82s in Soyez and the time they stapled a machine gun to one of their stations is fine.
Part of the Krugabe Multiplier Plan for Economic Recovery!
Nice boomstick, needs alt-text. You’re doing good work, Brett.
They’re good links, Brent.
Oh shit, John is airborne. Everyone remember your SCBA training. Stay CALM.
*loses his fucking mind*
alt=”All right you primative screwheads, listen up.”
Soemthing about WP screws up my alt-text.
WP alt text instructions. (They seemed to work for Gojira)
It just seems like the textbox that says “Alternative Text” should work.
I think the “alt” attribute was for what appeared in the picture space if images were turned off (or what was read by screen readers for blind people). The “title” attribute is for the hover stuff.
You can’t just compose the raw HTML in a text editor and then past it into the post composition page?
Someone thinks America needs a military department just for space.
Bumper sticker I saw today: EARTH FIRST we will mine the other planets later
Probably triggers every snowflake who sees it. I’ve gotten to where I just refuse to read the comments on any science news story on the web. Every single one of them will see the same luddites come crawling out from under a rock to spew their horseshit. And it’s always some variation of 2 things:
1. God argle blargle blargle the earth is only 6000 years old *quotes scripture* argle blargle blargle the cause of all our problems is sin!
or
2. We shouldn’t go there, because argle blargle blargle already raping this planet argle blargle blargle children are starving right here on earth!
Judging by the truck it was on, it was intended to trigger snow flakes. There is a coal mine up the road.
Brett omits bullets just to spite me. Sad!
Bullets are unnecessary visual clutter.
There. I said it!
you are a troglodyte unworthy of the gifts of modern civilization
Just use list tags and create bullets every time you post to satisfy this out of control bullet fetish. Do the list tags work here? Well, there’s not preview feature, you have to take some risk.
I refuse to be othered by you philistines. I am trying to bring the light of civilization to heathens.
That’s already the “Air Force”.
Hey! Army has a Space Command as well.
And Shane Kimbrough, COL, US Army is Commander of the ISS, right now. So Army FTW!
Clearly this is why we need Space Marines.
But the Goa’uld are keeping them occupied.
A stargate reference? We approve. needs link to pew pew tho
Richard Dean Anderson is a good actor.
THERE IS NO RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON ONLY MCGYVER
MacGruber?
Who, unlike real action heroes ‘The A-team’, refused to ever use a gun.
In their defense I don’t believe a single bad guy was killed by the rain of gunfire that always ensued.
Which, as a child, always struck me as ridiculous. Only later did I come to appreciate the full hilarity of it.
The automatic version of the mini-14, in hard chrome, that was human safe, but would cause actual military trucks to flip end-over-end and motorcycles to explode 30 feet into the air?
Better than a fuckin phaser!
I still lust after a chromed mini with blonde furniture.
+1 Michael Valentine Smith with his free love and communal property.
If Stargate taught us anything, it’s that the P-90 is apparently the greatest weapon in human history.
+007 Goldeneye on Nintendo
Only when used in combination with a blaster staff.
I started to watch the latest “Acquisitions, Inc.” Game, and quickly found out that Binwin Bronzebottom (Scott Kurtz of PvP) was no longer a member.
I decided not to watch it. The disappointment was too overwhelming.
It is verified that Kurtz was responsible for chasing away Will Wheaton (aka Aeofel).
I recognize the words, but they don’t mean anything put together.
Start at the beginning, and when you come to the end, stop.
100 hours of Dungeons and Dragons? Can I just watch Mazes and Monsters instead?
The podcasts are surprisingly entertaining, but, as with all things, your mileage may vary.
Mazes and Monsters is a far-out game…
BF met Wheaton, I told him I knew people who would pay him handsomely if he slugged him, but he declined…though he seems to regret it now.
Keep punching Nazis.
Punch more Nazis.
Punch all the Nazis.
I remember when Whedon compared people who were against Obamacare to Nazis.
So yeah, I think Whedon’s idea of Nazis may be a little skewed.
*Wheaton, stupid Joss always gets me confused.
Both Whedon and Wheaton.
Also, “skewed” seems to be a pretty apt descriptor of the former at the moment. Exhibit A, and Exhibit B. I can’t wait for the next big-ticket Marvel villain to say “make X great again” in a fresh and topical bit of dialogue.
“Marvel comic sales seem to be down…I know, let’s do exactly what’s causing it in the movies too!”
Joss is just desperate to get prog approval back after they turned on him. I’d have said fuck you all after getting attacked like that, but he’s 100% appease the beast.
As much as I enjoy penny arcade, am I the only one who finds PvP tedious and dull?
I don’t read either, but I like Acq Inc
Say I didn’t want to watch dozens of hours of other people’s D&D, what did Kurtz do to scare away Wheaton?
dozens of hours of other people’s D&D
HarmonQuest is only 10, 25-minute episodes of Pathfinder. I don’t really play, but a friend has me watching it and it’s been entertaining.
Tell him “Shut up, Wesley”?
+1 Clome
It didn’t happen during the games (although Will blamed Scott for something that happened to his character). Wheaton just said that Scott was being an unrepentant jerk about something. There are reports from others that Scott is a difficult personality. Its a shame because he had some of the funniest one-liners.
Watching (and listening to–the first few seasons are podcast only) Acquisitions Inc isn’t the same experience as trying to watch, say, Critical Roll. I reiterate that Aca Inc is entertaining, even the ones with Wheaton. Patrick Rothfuss takes his place, when he leaves.
The first season was done as a marketing gimmick to introduce 4th Edition, so there is a bit of explaining by the DM what things mean. Eventually, they started doing live games at PAX (Penny Arcade Expo), and they are well-attended.
The Wheaton-Kurtz rift was a surprise, because they seemed to really like each other in the games.
“Mistah Kurtz, he dead!”
Bloomberg News had an EXCLUSIVE interview with Paul “If the question is when markets will recover, a first-pass answer is never” Krugman today. Unfortunately I had a conference call and missed it.
In unrelated news, the chyron has said some variation of “Stocks hit record highs” or “Dow over 21000 for first time” for most of the day.
Fake growth!
Are there still people around that dont know that Bill Nye is a fraud?
My entire FB feed.
Only about a third of the country. Then there’s the third that hasn’t heard of him and doesn’t care.
“What are you? A bunch of Jesus freaks? You ought to be working for Fox.”
An argument you might see whipped out more often now =
Whenever Obama did something that imposed strictures on the economy, it was seen as “part of the greater good”.
Now, anything that people might object to? they’ll find reason to suddenly argue = BAD!! because (might) slow Economy.
i mean, do you recall anyone mentioning that when Bernie was proposing financial Transaction Taxes? its like the idea that intervention into markets can have bad-effects has suddenly been rediscovered.
“its like the idea that intervention into markets can have bad-effects has suddenly been rediscovered.”
I have the feeling that “progressives” will be “rediscovering” a lot of things that they either ignored or supported under Obama but revile under Trump, such as interventions in the Middle East, domestic spying, vomit-inducing egomania, and meticulously planned photo ops.
Demolition derby and figure 8 racing is much more prestigious in yokel land.
Figure eight CHAIN RACIN is where it’s at, Bubba.
So, I’m reading the book “Days of Rage”
(an excellent review was linked to a while ago, so i bought a copy)
Highly recommended. Only about 1/3 into it. Lots of interesting little details. Makes you realize how much of the modern SJW/BLM thing is nothing but watered down 60s SDS/Weathermen rhetoric. They really have zero new ideas
I’m assuming you read this? I bought it as well after reading that, but I’m only a little bit in. Makes me think of The Forsaken in terms of forgotten-history stuff.
Also, reading The Forsaken and The Gulag Archipelago, as well as other Soviet history, really drive in how the modern SJW/BLM rhetoric is 60s SDS/Weathermen rhetoric is 10-30s Soviet/progressive rhetoric. There’s so much that could be directly copied word-for-word from each era and you wouldn’t be able to tell which is from when, because they’re all identical.
Yo, SRC, multi-link posts get held up in moderation. We’ll catch them and put them in as fast as we can, but single link posts will get through instantaneously provided the heuristic spam filter doesn’t take a dislike to them.
Perhaps a per-user whitelist? Seems like that would be less labor in the long run… barring a sudden heel turn where I tear off my mask and reveal I’m Mary Stack or start babbling about how you can make $8k/month working from home or my strong opinions on the agricultural city-state, of course.

SP, you are an angel. Thanks for keeping OMWC in check and for the good work you do here.
Wait. I’m supposed to keep OMWC in check? *scurries to find her contract*
Here.

It was someone’s link to that review which prompted me to go out and buy the book.
*the decision to buy was learning that he was also the author of “Barbarians at the Gate” which i read way back in college. I think he spoke @ my college as well.
Read Koba the Dread. Its not Soviet History really; its more… just a very interesting book – basically Martin Amis writing an open letter to his dead father, reflecting on a generation of british intellectuals who made apologies for Stalin & Soviet communism in general.
One of the single most interesting books you can read on the subject of Stalin. You can also read it in like 2-3 sittings.
Thanks, that sounds like something that would be right up my alley.
I was old enough to be paying attention to the news back in the 70s, and somewhat of an anti-communist. I remember this shit.
And I remembered in 2008 when Alinsky/Ayers acolyte Barrack Obama got elected. The last eight years turned out better than I expected, but it’s no wonder that the left has become batshit crazy.
It wouldn’t have turned out that good had Obama been able to do everything he wanted to do, or even a small percentage of it. The one thing he was able to do, Obamacare, is a damn disaster in it’s own.
I couldn’t agree more. US political institutions are in poor repair, but they did prevent a comprehensive disaster in that case.
Great article! It pretty covers all the luminaries of the 1970s militant lunatic left.
My favorites:
Assata Shakur – the role model that Black Lives Matter promotes on their “Get Involved” webpage. Murder, kidnapping, etc. Fugitive from justice in Cuba.
Fred Hampton – a great documentary by his supporters at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLSr76vKjBw.
Eldridge Cleaver, Black Panther and big fan of “rape as a political act“
Haven’t I been banging that drum around here…er….there for several years?
Same rationale, same language, same tactics, same goals. Leftists are always and everywhere the same. If ours had their way we would all be posting from a prison in Alaska.
Great to hear. I just received my own copy in the mail a few days ago and put it in the pile.
Write a book review for the site when you’re done. 😉
There’s a lotion for that.
Bloomberg News had an EXCLUSIVE interview with Paul “If the question is when markets will recover, a first-pass answer is never” Krugman today.
I saw the promo for that this morning, but
forgot to watcheradicated it from my memory. I presume the clip is available on roku, if I need a good laugh.More! in “I don’t actually read the articles”
Sean Spicer: Check out that fucking neck-gap
That’s not the media trying to make you look bad = that’s just bad posture, or a terrible tailor.
that and the bags under his eyes, make him look terrible. Seriously, if you’re going to have a spokesperson, he shouldn’t look harrowed. He should look unflappable and pleased with himself.
As an example = look at the tight-ass neckline on (RIP) Tony “Doctors Say My Colon Cancer Is This Big” Snow
should look unflappable and pleased with himself
So, Chris Pratt?
Now we know what (who?) President Jesse is gonna do.

It does sound better, Jesse. Especially because I still have not figured out what mb is, unless it’s Mercedes-Benz? MegaByte? Master Bedroom? Mario Brothers? I give up.

But there’s so much more to me than catty-remarks about men’s suits.
I have…. catty-remarks about so many things!
How on earth does The Donald not have some Italian supermodel newsreader chick for his spokesperson? I really expected better from his Presidency.
It seems like one of the Spanish language weather ladies with the short skirts and plunging necklines could do the job. First hispanic female WH spokesperson, and it would drive SJWs insane. Plus, more people would actually want to watch press conferences.
Speaking of the markets, 21k is now in the rear view mirror. Damn that Trump. Damn him to Hell.

Maybe it can get really good at spotting vulnerable people and start nudging them gently toward suicide. Will Smith can figure it out. Poorly CGI’d hijinks ensue.
Democrats Said Melania’s White Dress Was Racist, Then Wore White To Trump’s Speech
Remember when Melania Trump wore a white dress to the GOP convention and liberals had to pass the smelling salts?
Not even a little bit.
“What is this, a Klan rally?”
They forgot to wear their hats.
Hmm…apparently I can’t link to my earlier comments.
But that’s OK, just click here and CTRL-F down to the phrase “Incidentally, I notice” – you will learn about Alma Bridwell White, first American female bishop, feminist…and Klan-loving Republican.
(remember, this was before the Republicans and Democrats Switched Sides, ergo, she was a Democrat. /sarc)
Political message understood: they are all cycling in unison. Just in case you might not know what I mean by cycling.
You think many women in that picture are still having menses?
No, I just googled bloody cycling and that was the first image. *hand on heart and eye on buttocks*
Well, it’s typical left. They can’t do hypocrisy on a small scale, they go all out.
Holy fuckerballs… now this:

I thought you had your sex hookups in the airport bathroom. No need to go farther north!
Nah, security makes that too difficult, which in no way influences my anti-TSA position.
CRACKED is unintentionally funny again.
I love the one-upmanship of the faux-intellectual left. Its always I REJECT THE STATUS QUO EVEN MORE THAN YOU, TRANSFAG

I tried to read that, but it was like a typical SJW whineathon after a few paragraphs. Does it get better?
“I’m tired of hating them because they’re ignoring information that is readily available to anyone who has the balls to switch the TV channel once per day.”
You decide
I’m wondering how much of that is true.
Like, I know that the “Muslim friend” probably doesn’t exist.
But it’s funny how he’s bragging about his mom’s shitty living situation.
I have a Muslim coworker who loves Trump. It’s hysterical how mad he makes my proggy coworkers.
Which parts of Trump’s ideas appeal most?
I’ve known a few Muslims whose general attitude towards Islam is pretty much, “I came here to get away from that crap.”
These were mostly the well-educated ones who got tired of dealing with the local equivalent of the Committee on Virtue and Vice, and came to a country where nobody gave a damn if they wanted to have a beer after work. They were still nominally Muslim, in the same way that somebody who goes to church at Christmas with their live-in boyfriend is Christian.
It wouldn’t surprise me if some of those people are the ones most interested in keeping out the people that caused them to leave their home countries.
Pretty much that. They were more moderate and just wanted to be left to their own devices. They have a closer, personal relation with Allah.
Brilliant observation. I avoid watching politician’s speeches because they’re arrant nonsense, so I wouldn’t have known this without coming to this site.
I’ve been in Africa since the self-promoter-in-chief’s inauguration. Internet was slow and unreliable, and I had better things to do anyway. Returned about ten days ago. It seems that the best of the commentariat has recently migrated over here. After ten days of observing the profound TDS over at HnR, I understand why. Gillespie and crew are almost as deranged as Bernie bro progressives and Clintonistas. Sure, Trump is a jerk and thinks government coercion is right and just when it does what he wants, but that’s pretty much a prerequisite for politicians. And, sure, Sessions is pretty much anti-libertarian, but so were the last dozen or so AG. Otherwise, things seem to be shaping up no worse than expected … and much, much better for libertarians than a HRC Administration is doing in some alternate universe.
Exactly.
The fact is that there are much more interesting things to talk about rather than hyperventilate constantly about “Trump”… when he’s little more than a mild blend of the awful things we’ve all been used to for so long.
The few, isolated areas where he might be an *improvement*? (e.g. school choice? stripping the regulatory state apart? defanging the EPA? realigning vis a vis Europe/NATO)
….are actually vitally interesting.
Hell, you could keep yourself busy writing about policy without even fucking mentioning Trump, if you wanted. But no, they need to concentrate all their attention on their absurd cultural-vendetta against what he symbolically represents, and endlessly signal “#NOTINOURNAME!” as though anyone on the right OR the left gives a flying fuck what they think.
that shit would be bad enough…. but the tone of the comments-section has just gotten unbearable. If its not trolls snapping at your heels, its other commenters backbiting one another over silly shit in some yokel/cosmo pissing match.
today was especially bad.
Also, your Mirror Universe version is pretty goddamn annoying.
don’t follow you
Amsoc’s running around titled as ‘Gleemore’ because he’s apparently still bitter about someone else taking his name. I don’t know why he went after you, probably just wants attention.
Ahhhh.
Didn’t understand your reference.
Yes, that would be especially annoying… i forgot about that. I banned him as soon as he stopped using “GILMORE (replace capital i with lowercase L)” and promptly forgot he existed.
Exactly. Like, school choice could very well happen in the next year. That’s an enormous libertarian issue, one of the few original ideas that the gradualist libertarian movement actually has that’s gained any traction. Trump seems be a supporter, and if the GOP has any brains at all they’ll pass it inside of two months, and make sure every single black parent in the inner city knows it was Trump who did it.
The NATO thing is also enormous. If we’re ever going to scale back our giant military machine, it has to start with demanding that our wealthy allies actually pay their way and/or “police their own streets” so to speak. Again, classic example of how the US can gradually move toward a more libertarian conception of military policy. In 2000 W talked about nonintervention, but then 9/11 happened and that went right out the window.
Killing the regulatory state. We might actually be able to grow our way out of the debt if we let people produce wealth. There’s not been a President since Reagan that was friendly to the creation of wealth, and most are actively hostile.
If they were doing these things from a Libertarian angle I’d keep reading. I can’t believe I donated to them.
At least you got a nice T-shirt out of it, right?
You’d better know your shit back-to-front because he’s going to find exactly what your weaknesses are before the show and pry into them with a crowbar and hammer you relentlessly when you can’t give an answer.
Speaking of a climate change crowbar, nobody has ever answered this question for me: If the exact same warming that has occurred over the past ~150 years were to have occurred 500,000 years ago before returning back to “normal,” could that be detected today by our measurement methods?
Damn reply button squirrels (in Monocle)
Who made that piece of junk, anyway?
Are you asking rhetorically?
No, I’m genuinely curious. I’d completely accept the answer if somebody told me that ice cores had decadal resolution. I’ve never had anybody give me an answer either way, though.
if we have the ice from that era?
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/11/131105081228.htm
hm. I know we use decay to figure out the age of the ice, but i’ve always thought it odd that after some #, it changes to ‘around 1 million’.
But that wouldn’t really show us temps, just what was in the air.
I think. Climate stuff isn’t my strong suit.
No, pretty sure the ice layers reflect average temps in their crystal-structure and density. much like rock.
*I took geology 101 in college!
hm. good to know. Would having tons more ice on top crush anything? That is really cool though, I had no idea.
I don’t know… ice is mad-dense yo.
I feel like saying now, “I ONLY took geology 101!!” as an excuse.
here
http://www.antarcticglaciers.org/glaciers-and-climate/ice-cores/ice-core-basics/
they can date the gasses contained in the ice samples for layer-accuracy
don’t know what measurements you mean, but i presume there are geological methods which would show changes in temperature going back 1000s of years.
don’t know how sensitive they’d be
don’t know how sensitive they’d be
That’s my question, too. Do they have 10 year resolution? Is it 100 year resolution? 500? 1000? How well do we know that this rate of warming is “unprecedented?”
Call me an anti science troglodyte, but I just don’t fucking believe that an ice core is an “accurate to a tenth of a degree” level measure of temperature. The whole issue with AGW apocalypse predictions is that the dataset, the real dataset, goes back for not even 100 years, and then you’re going off secondary sources, which IMO are damn close to divining chicken entrails.
Oh, and one of the main things I love to point out is that many of the data stations they use to record temperature have more development around nowadays. What was a green field in 1970 is now a strip mall parking lot 50 years later.
A paper on ice core uncertainties that pretty much says they don’t know how much they don’t know.
Thanks for that.
Like, honestly, arguing AGW with a believer is exactly the same thing as arguing religion with a believer. Mann is a prophet, The Hockey Stick is their holy symbol, and they shout “the Science is Settled!” like it’s a prayer.
I’m not sure that’s necessary to the point made above, which was more to do with whether there were periods of warming which later cooled back down to “normal”; basically, you wouldn’t need the hyper-sensitivity you describe, merely the net change from point to point
Is it true that periods between glaciations happen on the type of scales that Nye stated… didn’t he say millions of years at first? Then changed it to tens of thousands?
You know what would be nice? If we actually had a scientific research sector which was not completely controlled by radical leftists. And there is no real argument that this is not the case, it is, that is a real settled fact, not so much AGW.
Ice cores or tree rings. I don’t know what else methods exist. Maybe someone else here knows. But of those 2, ice would be the longest record. Not sure how long current ice has been around. But the statement that climate is changing faster than at any time in history seems absurd to me.
I’d like to see Nye debate a really knowledgeable denier, he’d have the floor mopped with himself, I suspect.
That’s an interesting question and I was thinking the same thing. Carlson is snarky and all, but he’s not very quick. He could have actually asked Nye that questoin ‘How do you know that it’s happening faster than at any time in history?’. I’m skeptical on that, although I’m not the one studying the ice cores, but neither is Nye. Also, how long has the ice that we have access to study been on the planet? What about before that? We have no way to know what happened then on such a short scale. The gist of it is, Nye is full of fucking shit. Every fucking prediction climate scientists have made has been wrong. So how can we trust them that this is a settled?
Actually, he could have brought up several other recent (in the past few hundred years) warming events and asked how we know this one is different. Carlson is not the brightest of bulbs.
Yeah. Reportedly the Vikings were growing grapes in Greenland at one time and that’s how Greenland got it’s name. What about that, Nye? Growing grapes in Britain is bad, but growing them in Greenland was good because there were no SUVs then? And what about the little Ice Age that occurred a few hundred years ago across Europe? Temperatures plunged several degrees in a short period. Did that happen because people stopped using their AC?
You don’t have to even go back that far. The latter part of the 15th century and early 16th century were legendarily warm in Europe (at least), resulting in some amazing wines, some of which lasted well into the 20th century. And Nye brought up grape growing in England- which was big business in the 19th century.
His knowledge of wine is even dimmer than his knowledge of science.
Every single thing that that Nye guy said is either untrue, based on untruth or baseless speculation. In short it was a big fat crock of propaganda horseshit. No, Carleson isnt the brightest bulb but the writer that told him to hone in on “What percentage of change is due to human activity” hit the nail on the head.
“If you are certain that human activity is affecting the climate tell us how you know it and show your work.”
If they cant do that (they cant) then we aren’t talking science, we are talking about something they pulled out of their ass.
Didn’t the Vikes also name part of Canada Vinland for the same reason?
today was especially bad.
I peeked in this afternoon. John was busily calling everybody stoopud.
Buttplug was back praising Obama’s economic genius. So sounds like everything is finally back to normal.
yeah, its basically a constant pissing match the “redder” ones (like john) and the “Bluer” ones (like Chemjeff, et al) and the trolls.
its all noise
I called him out on a couple whoppers but he just plowed on.
I only went because my work is blocking this place now >:-|
and it was endless Trumps
Oh and I meant to add I would welcome him here anyway.
Has anybody actually read any of the stories currently out there about how “studies show” charter/alternative schools’ results are even more disappointing than previously suspected?
I don’t think I have the patience.
There was one a couple months ago where the headline was something like “Charter Schools Lag Behind” but then when you actually read the article, what they meant was that charter schools had less funding per pupil, but were producing slightly better results.
Here’s another egregious example of the NYT blatantly distorting the facts to support their narrative:
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/30/upshot/free-market-for-education-economists-generally-dont-buy-it.html
Read the fourth paragraph, the part where it says that only one-third of surveyed economists thought that school vouchers would improve outcomes for students. Now click on the link in the text that shows the actual data from the poll. Notice how “agree” and “strongly agree” add up to 36%, or a little over one third. Notice that the “uncertain” column – which cannot be credited to either side – is 37%. Now look at “disagree” and “strongly disagree”. Well shit, they only add up to 19%, or almost one fifth! One third is bigger than one fifth, I think. So in reality, of all the surveyed economists outside of the “uncertain” category, a majority of them actually supported the idea of school vouchers. Yet, the NYT phrased it in a way that makes it sound like the minority. They didn’t go as far as to say that two thirds of economists disagreed, but they heavily implied it.
Hmm.. lessee here… Current Afternoon Links post count: 268.
On another site, at another time, this would mean the posting would be dying down.
But here in Glibertopia, methinks it’s not even the halfway point.
So here’s another link:
Letter from Tehran: Trump ‘the bazaari’ (The Iranian Parliment’s Conference on Palestine)
Wait, when did this happen?
Daily Mail: Just call her Nkechi Diallo! The former NAACP president Rachel Dolezal who lied about being black has legally changed her name to a West African moniker meaning ‘gift of god’
Whaaaaaaat
Right after her threat to do porn didn’t generate any buzz for her ‘book’.
How do you say “narcissism” in West African?
Me-gro?
Damn.
You win, Slammer.
OMG
TIWTANBL
Is that her pr0n name? I hear that’s the only job she gets offered these days. Maybe she finally accepted one.
Crap! (The name “Theodore” also means “gift of God”. I don’t want to be compared to that fuckwit.)
So you just pretend to be an old white crumudgeon but are actually a teenage black girl? Neat!
I think she should move to Nigeria.
Does anyone remember who suggested ‘Talcum X’ as her new name? Priceless. She will forever be Talcum X to me.
I have to hand it to Slammer…Me-gro is pretty damned funny too.
Zero Sum Game called Shawn King Talcum x
Her name should be Mayo Anjello.
when trump says “we” is it the royal version?
The funny thing is, I can actually see Obama talking like that. Maybe Oprah will do that when she’s POTUS.
Patrick Kane scores in the 2nd period of Blackhawks vs Penguins!
I thought about going to see this game at the bar, but my desire to remove my bra and shoes outweighed my desire for comraderie.
We should consider having daily sports threads (all sports included in one generic spot) for those of us who like that type of thing.
I can do baseball. Everyone here hates baseball. But baseball is the best.
I love it too. Already watching pre-season, for the love of Pete.
You cant remove your bra and shoes in this bar? What the hell kind of bar is that?
😀
And now Patrick Kane earns his 2nd hat trick in 3 games. Woot! Blackhawks win 4-1 over the reigning Stanley’s Cup champs, the Penguins.
