ZARDOZ SPEAKS TO YOU, HIS CHOSEN ONES. ZARDOZ IS A BIT SHORT OF GUNS AT THE MOMENT. SO HE GIVE YOU THE GIFT OF LINKS. GO FORTH AND COMMENT!
- CLOWNS ARE …UPSET. ZARDOZ HAS INSTRUCTED BRUTAL ENFORCERS TO MOCK THEM.
- ZARDOZ PROVIDES LINK FOR THOSE WHO LIKE FEMALE BRUTALS.
- ZARDOZ PROVIDES LINK FOR THOSE WHO LIKE MALE BRUTALS.
- CORRUPTION, IN BRUTAL CITY OF CHICAGO? ZARDOZ IS AGHAST.
THERE, MY CHOSEN ONES. REMEMBER LINKS ARE GOOD. BEER IS ALSO GOOD. GO FORTH AND HAVE BOTH!
I will have both beer and grilled kielbasa links tomorrow.
I APPEAL TO ZARDOZ WITH MY DIETARY CHOICES!
ZARDOZ IS PLEASED – YOU SHOULD BE SLAYING BRUTALS IN NO TIME.
Is Zardoz someone’s alt?
Are you implying that ZARDOZ is just a creation of an elite to keep us in line?
Mostly asking since I never saw any ZARDOZ at That Other Place. Wondering if this is some other meme I missed on days I was too busy to pop by.
Zardoz Is.
ZARDOZ WAS. ZARDOZ IS. ZARDOZ WILL BE.
But surely you jest ol bearded one?
ZARDOZ NEITHER JESTS, NOR HAS A BEARD. AND DO NOT ADDRESS ZARDOZ AS SHIRLEY!
If you don’t make the lightning come down right now and smite my enemies from the face of the earth, I’m voting for Trump next time!
I’m getting less ZARDOZ and more Guardian of Forever.
Zardoz has always been.
BOCCE BALLS!
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-4391134/Elizabeth-Olsen-51-flaunts-busty-assets-TINY-bikini.html
She is fit for someone of her vintage. I have seen her name. I had to search. I have never seen one thing she was in.
the link says Elizabeth Olsen. That’s Elizabeth Hurley, daily Fail.
I’ll be in my bunk.
CLOWNS ARE … UPSET
I thought we had clown genocide last year. What are these ones doing around still?!?!
“Its one thing to accuse us of being child rapists, but we don’t hide in sewers!”
Besides, in the book it’s the kids who molest each other. The clown just tries to kill them.
What are the odds the pre-teen gang bang makes it into the movie?
I’d put it at between them aiming for an NR-17 movie and the odds of Michael Bay directing a movie with no explosions.
It’s harder to write a screenplay when the pedophile is a baseball coach. Clowns is kinda a given.
Oh boy this are some quality links my guy
ZARDOZ GRACIOUSLY ACCEPTS THE COMPLIMENT FROM BRUTAL GLITTERSTORM.
Zardoz should allow the titty pictures from Zardoz because titty is hard to find.
Hello! Long time reason lurker here, migrated over after the TDS got too much to handle. Unfortunately, as a lurker I never learned how to do those quotes, in-text links, etc. Any chance a quick reference to formatting here could be put somewhere on the site? Or if there already is and my orphan interns just didn’t find it, mind showing me where?
Anyway, linky linky!
https://pjmedia.com/video/even-cnn-is-giving-trump-kudos-for-the-syria-attack/
I love the rationalization here. If CNN criticises Trump, it’s just more proof they are partisan hacks (which, admittedly, they are). If they agree with Trump, then that means what he is doing is so obviously good that even those partisan hacks have to agree with him. If they sit on a story, they are trying to prevent the people from learning about the truth because it would make Trump look better. No matter what the MSM does, it just proves Trump is right. Because logic.
The Monocle Chrome plugin – which is linked somewhere here – makes it easier. Otherwise, google “html a” for links and “html blockquote” for quotes.
Has anyone ever figured out why target=_blank doesn’t work? Or is it working now?
What is this TDS you speak of?
Trump Derangement Syndrome, mostly from Shikha and the Jacket. There were a few other reasons for migrating (to be sure) and there’s plenty to criticise Trump on, but a lot of the Trump criticism coming from them felt more like they were trying to get those cocktail party invites rather than genuine libertarian analysis.
Also, half the reason I read Reason came was for the commenters, and with most of rhe best having moved here I thought I would as well.
plus BEER!
Well, we can’t really fight you without rolling a critical, Damn /nerd.
It’s one thing if you want to point out actual facts, and another to speculate on actions.
I gave Obama time to work on his promises. Everyone I hoped for, he shit upon. Everyone I disliked, he made into policy, and then amped it up to the nth degree. He basically had the least transparent government ever, despite promising the opposite. AFAIC, he’s human garbage. “Chocolate Nixon” is a decent term of hate, although Nixon did nothing close to what that shitbag did.
I’m giving Trump the same “few months window”, and he at least has been doing a few things favorable to freedom. Not a libertarian, (to be sure), but at least he’s moving some things in the right direction. (If he follows through.)
I was being sarcastic, you know.
Sarcasm Derangement Syndrome?
And now I’m debating if I should make the “Need to recalibrate my sarcasm-o-meter” joke, or the more nerdy and fitting for my avatar “Nat 1 on insight.”
Fortunately, by debating out loud I get to do both.
BTW, my rant wasn’t meant as hatred to you, Behold. I’m just pissed off by bullshit politics.
Oh. Of course. I knew that.
*Quietly orders kamikaze attack orphans to stand down. For now.
Rant about politics totally understandable, but I for one am shocked and offended that you didn’t use my preferred punctuation. The name’s “Behold!” you declarto-normative cis-lord!

Again ZARDOZ blesses us with his calming presence!
ZARDOZ doesn’t own me.
ZARDOZ DOES NOT OWN BRUTALS. THEY HAVE LITTLE VALUE, AND THEY GET STUCK IN ZARDOZ’S TEETH.
Brutals have little value? It is us Brutals who make beer, and it is our day!
Preach it! I was going to ask you and the other home brewers if you had a home brewing start up kit you would recommend.
This is the kit I started with, but with the plastic carboy. There are cheaper ways to get into the hobby if you are interested. It all depends on what you want to learn, and how frequently you plan on brewing.
Thanks. A couple of years ago I would have ordered that. At the moment a bit out of my price range though. I am, going to have to go with a very basic setup. Not the kegger version.
No worries, they’ve got several starter kits. It really depends on how much you’re willing to spend, and how much you already are interested in brewing. If you have a 2 gallon pot, you could go this route to try out home brewing. I already knew I was interested, and set up a 3 tap system before my first batch was brewed.
Cool there, and points for the spent grain fried chicken recipe. I would eat that.
Bless the Brutal Beer makers, for they are, Blessed?
ZARDOZ tells it like it is!
Thanks for the Female Brutals. She looks like a keeper, at least until my wife finds out.
You just have to talk to your wife more about that, Jimbo. Trust me, that will really work.
Get hold of some high-res shots of old Rhian and you’ll see she really does look a bit *old*.
LOL of course he did. Has any one of these crooks ever taken a stab at making an honest living, ever?
Well, he was going to try diamond mining. I hear that’s hard work.
It’s an orphan-drain, isn’t it.
Oh man….
Quite literally. They go down into a dark hole and never come back up.
You left out the best part:
Good business there.
When you’re rounding to the next billion, 44million is barely couch cushion change
Aah, you read that story too. Criminal our government is.
Zardoz understands conventional attractiveness.
66% public support for Trump’s Syria strikes according to Drudge.
Everyone knows that whenever genocide rears its ugly head we need to bomb the shit out of it.
Quiet! Zardoz says the penis is evil! Go forth!
That support perplexes me. It is not like anybody can identify a risk to US national security from letting the conflict burn. Rice with her asinine “duty to protect” is off the table while she worries about how massively she needs to lawyer up. There is no constituency in the US advocating for cute Syrians who previously were the shining light of reason. Trump never campaigned for intervention in Syria and sure as shit his voters didn’t vote for intervention. The Army is not going “Yeah! Let us have a chance to experience combat in a culture that does not want us or value US national values.” In fact the officers and Soldiers I know don’t want to have anything to do with that part of the world ever again.
I think the attack was a huge mistake. It accomplishes nothing in the long term, and probably didn’t accomplish crap in the short term. Russia is much more invested in Assad surviving than we are invested in overthrowing him and nation building. Russia is a lamprey attached to the Syrian shark. They are not giving up a warm water port in the Med.
It is amusing seeing the MSM turning from Clinton is smart because she says we should bomb to OMG Constitutional crises because Trump did bomb in less time than it takes to drink a beer. (hat tip to National Beer Day). But it is deeply disturbing to see yet another confirmation that the MSM is a wholly owned subsidy of Clinton Inc.
Wonder if Trump whispered to Putin, “I’ll have much more flexibility after the destruction.”
“That support perplexes me.”
Pictures of children killed by chemical weapons is a great emotional argument. Wanting to stay out because there are no US interests in getting involved is cold hearted and selfish. That about sums it up.
I always hated the song, “Do Something. I’m giving up on you.”
That support perplexes me.
I believe it. Didn’t even Schumer and Pelosi say it was a good thing? There are hard core Trumpkins who will back whatever he does, and there are the Clintonistas who say we should be bombing anyone who hurts a kid somewhere. Mix them you get 66%.
The minority are the ones who say, whoa there Mr missile thrower.
The “National Security” horse left the stable years ago.
You think?
Did you notice that this all happened the day before the Chinese president was scheduled to visit?
Ya there is that. But do you really think that plays with other world leaders as much as it plays in country to the pleebs?
more so
we’ve talked a lot over the past few years about how Obama ran foreign policy entirely for domestic consumption, and basically didn’t give a fuck what really happened re: relations as long as he could spin events in some manner that was self-congratulatory.
I think Trump’s people may be indicating that shit is entirely over. and you can be damn sure that both the Russians and the Chinese are turning to their aides and going, “WTF didn’t they say just last week that they were ‘downgrading‘ Assad??”
I’m not saying what i think Trump/tillerson/mattis et al are doing is necessarily a good thing. But i think people are assuming this is about “Syria”, when it may be a very low-cost/low-risk way to make both China and Russia throw out their playbooks and go, “We can’t use prior assumptions anymore, because this guy will turn on a dime”.
as i overheard someone else say (paraphrased), “it puts the other ‘world powers’ in a reactive position; simply playing chicken with the US is no longer a sane-option”.
e.g. Russia took crimea, China took the spratleys, basically because they knew with dead certainty the US wouldn’t do fuck all about it. and Iran pissed all over the iran deal by immediately testing missiles because they knew Obama wouldn’t ruin his big diplomatic victory by ripping it up as punishment.
I am pretty sure if any of those 3 had similar plans for the near future, they’re taking a second look.
when it may be a very low-cost/low-risk way to make both China and Russia throw out their playbooks and go, “We can’t use prior assumptions anymore, because this guy will turn on a dime”.
I had similar thoughts, but they were more like China and Russia thinking, “we need to rethink, because that guy is fucking nuts”. And then I re-thought and figured no world leaders are that smart. I might just be jaded from all the stupid shit that has happened over the past 20+ years to think that we have people thinking like that. I don’t know.
I wasn’t necessarily saying it was a good strategy. i’m just open to the idea that these actions are probably calculated beyond the stated rationale of = “i saw some pictures of dead babies and decided to cruise-missile attack”
i was just saying that, unlike how people attribute sophisticated strategy to trump’s media-goading tweets…. stuff like foreign policy actually does involve lots of big brains sitting around and running game-scenarios to see how they create advantage.
i would have had a very very different perspective on the whole thing had it not been for the very odd timing of the Assad-policy-reversal
there was no ‘first we talk tough’, ‘then we suggest sanctions and talk about red-lines’, ‘then we advertise our decisions’…
….no, it was “one day he was saying, “let’s stop talking about Assad must go”, then within 6 days, he’s firing cruise missiles at Assad’s forces.
it says that the US not only isn’t going to telegraph its actions anymore in order to make diplomacy more-predictable – it might actually be bullshitting, and is also willing to actually go ballistic on a moment’s notice.
at the minimum, it changes the way everyone else is going to think
I am a hardcore member of the realist school of foreign policy. I pondered would this 59 Tomahawk response would reset the inevitable PRC testing of a new President and decided the test will come but they might up it a notch. Putin and Xi now have an idea of Trump’s lower limit so it is time to test an upper limit.
“Crazy Eddie” Luttwak had a very interesting article before 9/11. His thesis was the that truly humanitarian thing was to let wars reach a conclusion. The opponents then reach an understanding between the relative strengths between them. Luttwak argued that the major powers insist on limiting others wars in ways they would never accept themselves. Furthermore they stop wars prematurely for flimsy reasons like they are uncomfortable with watching the images on TV. The result is the wound (war) is never drained and the infection builds up and bursts over and over.
On a related topic mentioned above. Dying of Sarin in a minute or two or get eviscerated by a chunk of hot steel and die curled over in an hour or two? If I have to choose the choice is easy. Since WWI a modern military can defend effectively against lethal agents. They are only really effective to use on “natives” and civilians. NATO studied this to great detail during the Cold War. The numbers of soldiers to become casualties was acceptable, the numbers of expected civilian casualties was astronomical.
It seems to be a classic case of politician’s logic.
Of course, it’s the Daily Mail, so they mostly talk about the femail after the gratuitous shot of the male hottie.
ZARDOZ MUST CONFESS, DAILY FAIL DOES TILT TOWARD THOSE THAT PREFER THE FEMALE BRUTAL FORM.
Thank Zardoz!
Sometimes I don’t think Zardoz has my best interests in mind.
ZARDOZ DID NOT HAVE MUCH MATERIAL TO WORK WITH, BRUTAL RHYWUN.
Zardoz could try a little harder next time, hmph.
One word says it all: “Asian”.
Some people are such critics of one-hit-wonder bands.
I know I’m cynical about such things, and it does sound like the AirBnB host canceled/didn’t honor the reservation in a shoddy way,, but the quote “We have Trump now” makes me highly suspicious. Especially quoted by someone in the “Cultural Studies” program of the law school.
Not to mention — a rental in Big Bear? You probably couldn’t rent at all if you didn’t want to host Asians. So story probably juiced for maximum “racism!!” effect, is my guess.
^What One said. I can’t really add anything to that, other than having read the story from a different source (Yahoo, maybe), and I don’t recall seeing the tidbits about her major, or, couldn’t confirm the host’s identity.
It does look like something untoward did happen, but that report just seems….off.
There is absolutely no coordinated effort by the MSM to undermine Uber/AirBnB/Youtube and other emergent business-models and i think its insane to suggest that these large media conglomerates who rely on billions a year in ad-spending would ever pursue the interests of their larger corporate clients who are confronting challenges from smaller unregulated players. And no, i don’t think they would cynically use “racism” knowing that their core audience are like like starving piranhas ready to consume anything confirming their suspicion that all Trump supporters are alt-right white-supremacists. That is simply crazy talk and can’t imagine where you got that impression.
Wait…. I believe there’s video of the altercation
well played.
Seriously tho = Look at this, and tell me whether or not you think the media has any shared “Agenda”
It’s all very disturbing. Do news outlet’s typically all want to run the same headline on a story? It’s like there was a press kit for this “event”.
Of course, one outlet lists her as a “law student”, then we get that “cultural studies” label in another. And, who the hell was interviewing her in nighttime snowfall? Surely it wasn’t a reporter… And it’s not as if this was some kind of accident scene, so why not go inside somewhere.
Ehh…I’m working myself up more that it’s worth.
Oh, and Gilmore–is there an email address where I can write you? I have a question or two.
The part that makes me suspicious is the race of the renter was fairly clear from the name of the renter. So if you were biased against somebody to the point where you don’t want to rent to them, why would you let them rent the space in the first place?
You missed the money shot: “She currently is enrolled in the Critical Race Studies Program at the UCLA School of Law.”
I’m taking bets on how long it will be until the narrative falls apart. I’ll take the under on 72 hours.
I like applz and lethur.
DON’T ANY OF YOU WORK?
No.
Yes
Oh, look at Mister GDP-enhancing fancy pants.
My work of late does not effect the GDP. Except what I spend. I guess that helps a bit.
*fist bump*
Done for the day.
We’ve all moved to the socialist worker’s paradise of Venezuela, where there is no need to work and everything is provided for us by our benevolent government. Long live Nicolas Maduro and our eternal President Hugo Chavez!
The Chicago Sun-Times? Isn’t that the newspaper in Early Edition?
Isn’t that the paper that carried what’s-his-face well past his princess phase?
I wish my dog wouldn’t fake me out when he has to potty. He only wants to kill frogs
Tell him he’ll go blind if he keeps “killing frogs”.
Baby-sitting my daughter’s dog (sibling of mine). After forever they are both gonna pine.
Is it a German shepherd? They hate frogs.
He’s German but a dachshund and he doesn’t care. He’s in the double digits already in kill count.
My puppy either has no clue, or is so smart she pisses in front you to Piss You off,IYKWIM.
Awesome Little Pit, going to be big because Daddy, etc.
ZARDOZ’S WORK IS NEVER DONE, AS LONG AS BRUTALS WALK THE EARTH.
I stride to proudly upon this earth. Humble me, please.
Needs more Lovecraft.
Don’t think ZARDOZ ‘does’ tentacles unironically.
If you attempt to strike a clown in the face can you get a solid hit or will the freak’s greasepaint cause your hand to slip and deflect some of the power?
Staight in the nose, citizen. If you hear an amusing squeak then you’re gold.
Scuff your knuckles on the grit of the floor of the apocalypse, you’ll make that punch stick.
Brutal.
Exactly.
Scuffed and scarred knuckles. Moist impointant!
He carries on with his product plug and hands you a box of dog treats instead of cookies.
Haven’ you haven’t seen UHF?
Wow, that’s some poor typing on my part.
I’ve got a baaaaaaaaad feeling about this.
Said the Scot!
Hey! Dat look like sumpin’ dat “Freckles” lets out once a momf.
Ewe racist.
Cat video!
Not only do cats never turn down an opportunity to be Nazis, but they’ll also ride your wooly mountain sheep. Awesome.
Cats are why we can’t have nice things.
We watched that movie last night. So hilarious.
Man, I loathe applying for jobs. I found a job today that looks like someone took my resume and c+p’d it into an announcement. So far, so good. But there’s no posting date, no closing date and no notice of first round interviews. I have to leave town tomorrow for emergency family stuff so I can’t go in and lay on the charm/disgust the hiring manager in person. Goddamn, Just give me a if-we-don’t-call-you-by-x day-then-don’t-call-us date.
in closing, fuck you HR.
It’s nice to have a job wherein your task is to say no.
I was a bureaucrat many moons ago. I am well-versed in saying No.
Although I did have to flatly tell one guy that he was SOL because his neighbor’s shed was over the property line and the platting authority that approved the plat no longer existed and that a corrected survey was going to cost at least 10k due to the remote location of the property. I gave him some stock language to add to the deed that would have at least made the encroachment official, but I never had it come back across my desk. Moral of the story, check the plats and get title insurance.
http://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/a-job
Just curious. You do have at least one recruiter working for you, right?
Nope. I spoke with some recruitment firms, but they only handle the search part and don’t seek out candidates proactively since they only get paid on candidate searches. Going from tech back to parasite public sector is proving more difficult than I thought, especially since my network is in another state very far away.
Oh well. Im employed for now and can bank salary until I find something better.
“Going from tech back to parasite public sector”
Fuck that shit. I’m never working pubsec. I’ll just go walk about and eat out of dumpsters first. I got recruited … we used to call them ‘head hunters’ back in the 90s. I’ve changed recruiters since, but they always find me the best clients. Have/had clients who work with government contracts/funding, but have never worked for anything but a private company. Not sure if there’s a moral to that story or not, but I pretend there is and it makes me feel good. So there’s that.
I do have qualms about the public sector. Still, I do believe that government has a small role to play in society as neutral arbiter of property rights, and that’s what this position would entail.
Working for a native tribe fully erased any doubts I have of the government to make anyone’s life better. Except for grant writers and the families who control the jobs and patronage.
Spending a few hours in a BIA field office and watching people sit there and do nothing while being paid handsomely was demoralizing. On the plus side, hooray for diversity in the exciting field of jobsworths. I guess.
I have contracts with both pub and private. Public pays about double so it’s tough to dump them. In a way I’m just getting my taxes back from what they take from my private sector jobs.
I’m there with you. I’m hunting for a job, but so far I’ve only gotten contract offers. One offered to fly me down to the city in question on Sundays, and fly me home Thursdays… for a 1 year contract. I gave that a hard pass unless they were willing to let me work remote.
That’s a hard life, especially with all this TSA bullshit at the airport.
My old man spent probably 1/4 of his life flying and at airports and he said he’d take a 50% paycut rather than deal with that shit every week. He retired before 9/11, so he was lucky in that aspect.
UNHAPPY TO BRING IN BIRD FEEDERS IN THE ZINGING RAIN. Sucks to do but we have those kinds of neighbors.
Cats?
bears.
There’s a ~5000 acre fire about 5 or so miles east of me. Not in danger at all (it’d have to jump a few lakes), but the smoke smell is creeping into the house and that’s not fun.
Also my in-laws are in town and I think I’m getting a migraine.
Also, I need to stop coming here on Friday nights to complain. It gets nobody anywhere.
Blah.
Migraines are hell. If you’re getting one, I have sympathy for you… and I generally have sympathy for no one.
Have a beer
As long as we’re sharing cat videos, please watch this video of my cat falling into a bathtub because if you watch it I get money and I like money.
What’s Mr. Lizard’s cut?
It helps to keep him in delicious kale and dandelion greens.
You know Mr. Lizard?
I LOL’ed
Brings back childhood nightmares of having to bathe a cat on purpose. My current pair don’t go outside for a reason.
Blame Crusty for this.
Aw adorable – both of them. I would have exited that situation covered in a sheet of blood, though.
Exactly.
Now your YouTube is bunk for weeks. Sorry.
You’re doing it wrong. The cats stay outside and never come in. Also punt when nearby.
Well, I don’t have an outside so I’m kind of constrained there.
I laughed. Why was the lizard in the bathtub though? Does he have a normal location like a lizarquarium or something, or does he just hang out on the couch?
Late, but… bearded dragons don’t need much water, being desert animals and all. One of the ways they can get the moisture they need is to put them in the bathtub for a few minutes, and they can absorb the water through their skin.
Lauren Southern just posted a video listing some of the big names supporting Trump’s Syria strike.
Tommi Lahren reminds me of this girl who tattled on me in elementary school for farting.
OT: What would you say are the most libertarian television shows made?
I nominate the Dukes of Hazzard in the classic category and Shark Tank among the newest.
The A-Team
Kung Fu
Tom & Jerry
I will also pick “The Wire” despite David Simon being a complete proggy shit-sponge. Like “Firefly” the work transcended the creator’s intentions.
Hell yes on A Team, Kung Fu and T&J. There should really be categories.
I couldn’t get into the Wire.
My wife always has mentioned Firefly as something I should watch and I saw a bit of it but ended up falling asleep.
I would nominate the original Rod Serling Twilight Zone as well. Not every episode, but some very liberty oriented themes going on.
He has a reputation as being a bit of a lefty – maybe for the times – but this one is one of the most libertarian half hours of TV I have ever seen.
Any particular episodes?
a lot of the sci-fi of the 50s-60s had not-so-subtle political themes.
The Monsters are Due on Maple Street and a Third from the Sun comes to mind right away. I’m sure there were a few more. What a great series.
The Obsolete Man probably most especially.
The closing narration, for reference:
I’m sorry, but you are no longer welcome here.
for clarity: while i think Tom + Jerry (and their twin show, Road Runner + Wiley E Coyote) had “pursuit of liberty in the face of perpetual encroachment” as their core-narrative…
…I think Woody Woodpecker was at heart an Nihilist Anarchist.
And Pepe Le Pew was some kind of communist misogynist.
Pepe as an apparatchik using his position to grab pussy explains a lot.
The Wire is a bit of a slow boil. But it does a pretty good job of showing just how fucked up things are, especially in the inner city, and how resistant things are to change.
Even a somewhat dirty cop trying to be decent human being and save a kid, still has to fill out paperwork. The S4 ending was a huge nutpunch.
THE PRISONER. DUH.
The Equalizer
The Rockford Files, except for his friend Dennis all the gov types were shown to be uncaring, incompetent, or generally useless until it came time to get credit for the bust.
Rick and Morty
Speaking of 80s cheese… how unlibertarian is Hart to Hart? Their best buds are all cops FFS.
When they got together it was…moider!
Fun fact: in real life Max was far-lefty who got blacklisted in H’wood until H2H gave him a chance in the 80s.
Weird career path.
Dude had balls of steel though.
I love that stupid show despite everything, and he is a part of it.
That show and Murder She Wrote, why would anyone invite those people to a party or any kind of event? You know someone is going to end up dead and if you’re the killer, you absolutely must keep them away, yet…no.
Johnathon Hart may have been a self-made millionaire but in owning two-dozen companies I guarantee that he was pulling in some serious taxpayer coin through some means or another.
Little House on the Prairie, the government was never around and people relied on themselves and their friends to get through tough times.
http://www.history.com/news/little-libertarians-on-the-prairie-the-hidden-politics-behind-a-childrens-classic
I know Rose Wilder Lane was a big part of the burgeoning libertarian movement, but FFS. The shit they wrote about in the books wasn’t “libertarianism” or any kind of “ism”. It’s just what people did. In the 1870s you really didn’t have to invent self-sufficiency, or skepticism of government, or anti-urban attitudes to write about when you were writing about dirt farmers out in the middle of nowhere plains where the nearest neighbor was 50 miles away.
Have Gub Will Travel
Goddammit!
Have Gun Will Travel
Well “Have Gov Won’t Travel” is a pretty statist show, so I’m glad you corrected yourself!
OT: What would you say are the most libertarian television shows made?
Wheel of Fortune
Competitive. Fair. Friendly. Simple, easy to follow rules that allow anybody to play. No moralizing or political commentary.
Nonsense. Game shows are inherently authoritarian. There can only be ever be one winner, and success depends on a combination of sheer luck and adhering strictly to arbitrary rules enforced by some empty headed moron, who makes more money than all the contestants and yet never even has to play the game.
Mostly true, but you leave out the important part: participation is voluntary. You could say most of the same things about poker night, weekend softball clubs, or pick up basketball at the Y. In all of those cases though, it’s just people being people. Taking time out to do something frivolous and adhere to silly, made-up rules by mutual agreement without the petty resentments of politics or the involvement of the state (except for the rare contestant who sues the game show – nothing’s perfect).
Ah, but as a former (attempted) contestant on Jeopardy! i can assure you – its not a random lottery of who gets on. Only the most telegenic and best matching the desired demos are chosen. Even the losers make money for the hosts.
You have a point there, but I’m not sure if you can extrapolate more broadly from Jeopardy, as the host is Canadian.
touche mon frere
You’re now changing the issue from “what sort of show evinces libertarian themes” to “what sorts of activities could be described as _________”
I think is a perfectly libertarian (or could be justified along libertarian lines) ‘business’, if you want to call it that. I think the thematic message that sort of structure sends to viewers however is very much the opposite. Its all so much “life-as-lottery and submission to arbitrary systems”
I guess my point was that “here’s a bunch of goobers playing hangman on national TV for money” demonstrates a sort of ecumenical frivolity that transcends politics itself and could therefore be thought of as sort of libertarian.
When I was a kid, for example, my parents could be watching Crossfire on CNN, each taking a different side, and getting each other so pissed off they could spit, then flip it to the Wheel at 7:30 and instantly forget they ever gave a shit about some arbitrary political issue. It’s somewhat libertarian just by virtue of having so little substance and not stoking political outrages.
(shrug) I’m not sure i understand why fantasy wish fulfillment (“I could answer that! If that were me, and i had similar luck, i would have won a bag of money”) is libertarian simply because it provides ideologically-neutral escapism.
I do admit that the entire concept of game shows is a sticky area compared to simpler Dramatic-Storytelling. as the kids today say = problematic, yo.
The idea that a little skill and a little luck might combine to bring you favorable fortunes isn’t libertarian per-se, I suppose, but it definitely fits within a libertarian framework and animates no small part of the market, so there’s that. Honestly though, ideologically-neutral escapism is getting increasingly difficult to find. They even manage to shit up sports with it on a fairly regular basis now. So not being bombarded with political messages and letting people indulge in a little stupidity without preaching just *feels* more libertarian to me, I guess, if only by the absence of an obvious agenda.
If I were to answer more seriously, I might say The X Files. The government never came out looking like anything but a bunch of incompetent, lying, ass-covering puppets controlled by a much smarter cabal of evil, amoral psychopaths who end up winning in the end and driving the lone hero to madness.
“No moralizing or political commentary.”
Ahem.
Yes, Minister, easily.
For example, on the idea of school choice.
Black Adder. Your superiors are all power mad idiots. If you go mad in the middle of the war who would notice?
Aly Raisman won’t free bleed!
Ugh! Chicks are gross.
I’ve decided to stop free pooping.

It’s somebody’s fetish.
What is this… I can’t even…
I’ve been using Preparation H for about 3 or 4 days due to some post-defecation anal discomfort caused by what I think is a hemorrhoid. I just thought I’d let you all know since it is so vitally important that we openly discuss our bodily functions. Feel muh empowerment.
If I have too much dairy I get serious taint boils.
I like Ani Difranco. There! I said it!
Tears up – me too Brother, Me too…
Dude, go see a proctologist. Get that thang rubberbanded and be done with it.
Use medicated wipes, take Citrucel daily for big, bright orange turds.
Our Zardoz,
who art in Vortex,
hollow be thy statue.
Thy utopia come,
thy wrath be done,
on Outland as it is in Vortex.
We give you this day your daily grain,
and you give us your guns,
as we exterminate Brutals with penis.
Lead us not into Vortex
but deliver us from Eternals.
For thine is the Tabernacle,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever
