Continuing the shuffling of lineups – this Afternoon’s Links brought to you by me. These links will be all about .. failure.
- Infrastructure fail. The Big Apple is rotten?
- Royalty fail.
- Just….fail. I can’t even.
- Gender oddness fail.
So there is some fail for ya. Have at it in the comments, ye snark masters and glib folk.
P.S. I was going to link if TEAM RED failed to, yet again, do anything about Lightworkercare. I’ll let y’all decide if what they did do was a fail (hint: almost anything Congress does is likely to be a fail).
Contract dork and nerd? How much do you charge?
I am chained to Big Swiss – I get compensated….but mostly in raclette and Ricola.
…and Nazi gold.
And compensation against property losses due to fire.
Wait, you’re the one who makes all those loopholes in the Swiss Cheese, aren’t you?
Wildlife sanctuary in Colorado kills 3 lions, 3 tigers and 5 bears after the county commissioners deny relocation request – claims of flooding dangers at existing location
Is there gonna be a BBQ?
Oh my!
Oh my
Standing ovations for both of you.
That’s a beautiful headline.
“Controversy erupts after Colorado animal sanctuary kills all its animals”
Ya think?
“Send us money, or we’ll shoot this dog!”
Holy shit. They killed them out of spite. That much is obvious. But it’s not like the county commission gives a shit. Fucking horrible.
At least Cecil the Lion is still ok.
well i, for one, would like to know what lion and tiger taste like so i’m outraged these animals were euthanized and buried.
You really don’t want to eat predator meat. It tends to be gamy and greasy.
I think I dated her.
Despair?
Dicks out
Littéralement Hitler.
Will the NBA boycott France now?
Everyone knows white frogs can’t jump.
Now that Tony Parker is crippled? Sure. Why not?
How can the French be more sane than the Americans?
Maybe French logic IS worth something!
More like broken clock.
Among the words that are grammatically of neuter gender in German are das Kind (child), das Baby (baby), and das Weib (a less common word for woman or wife). As is das Mädchen (girl).
Don’t forget das Gift. One of the best false cognates in any language
Das boot?
Whoa!
I think embarrassed has a claim on the world worst cognates. If your girlfriend says “Yo soy emberassado” It’s kind of expected that you you should marry her, and not because you embarrassed her.
Well she may be embarrased because of you emberazzing her.
That was a lot of fun to type.
You just knock up your Girlfriend, have fun explaining that to her parents.
I think her parents know how people get knocked up. 😉
Damn it, why do I keep giving Straight lines.
you spelled to sound correct, but just fyi the word is “embarazado” and you would be estoy, not soy
He was both a therapist and an analyst.
A theralyst?
Marriage by Jung?
This is a thing.
“Johnson, you were supposed to go to the bathroom before the meeting!”
My kid was telling me about some hand fidget thingy they have at school. I’m still not sure what in the hell he was talking about.

“The spinners cost about $5 up into the hundreds of dollars,”
I HATE EVERYTHING
I expect the first fidget spinner death to be any day now.
Fidget Spinners are so last week
I can’t believe someone would spend money on a stupid spinny thing. *spins torqbar
$140? Whoa. You didn’t … pay that, right?
NO! *spins like a mad man
Did you find it on the ground or something?
…no
But at the time I could afford it.
Look up Medford praetorian genesis and get a really good laugh. Then look up Microtech troodon. Top that off with Lucky13 xl aftermarket price.
So they were cheaper? Anything over $10 is a ripoff. $60 for the leather carrying cases is also laughable. smh
At the time I bought mine the aftermarket on a torqbar was 4 times retail. It has since dropped back down. Now they are truly not worth it with all the cheap good quality choices now.
Better spinners.
Even betterer spinners.
STEVE SMITH has me trapped! Send help!
1st I’ve heard of it.
Same here, I have two kids in elementary school. Of course AZ is about a month behind everyone else in terms of idiotic fads.
I have a special fidget spinner for the children.
Worse than butt-chugging and jenkim combined
Aren’t those just the leftover plugins from that failed Tony Hawk game where they tried to make it like a Guitar Hero thing?
Rubber band and ball stapled to a wood paddle or GTFO.
Stick and a hoop or GTFO.
A rock to wind A piece of string around
We all want one of those.
It’s for kids “on the spectrum”, whatever the fuck that means today.
That may be who it was intended for, but they all have them. My son asked for one because virtually all the boys in his class have one. At my daughter’s Y-princesses campout last week, even the older teenaged girls had them. At a campout!
Just yesterday my son announced that he would spend his own money to buy one from a friend. So there are spinner dealers, too.
Christ on a Cracker. What the fuck happened to just pissing on a tree?
Quite so.
*unzips, urinates on pine tree*
Yep. The Not-Wife’s boy, who is 6 and in Kindergarten, had to have a “fidget box,” because everyone else in the class had one.
It’s a fucking small plastic cube, with some switches and buttons on it. I’m hoping she didn’t pay too much for it, since he won’t even remember that he owns one, next week.
Oh FFS this “standing desk” nonsense needs to stop being a thing already. I won’t do it. I won’t.
But, motion!
I have no comment on… whatever that is. Just the idiotic people standing at their desks thing.
This is referred to as ‘wobbling and falling over at your desk’.
I hate sitting. I like standing.
I think they’re groovy.
I think the real problem comes from the social pressure in the office once 1/3 of your workmates get one. Or that one annoying boss who read an article once about it and now has decided that all shall conform.
Social pressure? Remember, “Fuck off, slaver” can be used in many situations!
yes because nothing makes me work more efficiently than stabbing pain in my feet and knees
So… you’re a cutter, then?
I drink a lot of caffeine, and I walk around a lot, so like the option to stand at my desk. Fuck the health reasons, I just like being able to stand at my desk.
I stand at work (a jerry-rigged standing desk) and I actually cannot go back to sitting. I am more productive standing.
Obligatory Liz Lemon
This actually a potentially good thing for people who stand to work — the reason being that a lot of people lock their knees when standing for too long and the result is not good for the body. This board causes people to move as they stand and work.
I don’t know what all of this royal family crap means, but I sure as hell hope it doesn’t mean more Prince Charles.
Or as he the actuarial tables would predict, the future Charles III.
I suspect that Charles will abdicate after a few weeks or months. Just long enough to make Camilla a princess. He won’t be coronated.
Don’t they change their name when they King?
No that’s when they Pope
King me.
You may be thinking of the Popes.
King Pope?
When the Popes ruled an area of central Italy their subjects called them Pope-King (“Papa Re”).
Now Papa Ray’s is just a BBQ joint in Mississippi.
The Japanese Emperor does
When they die.
Some monarchies do, the British one doesn’t.
You’re thinking of when people convert to Islam. Way different.
They sometimes do. There is speculation Charles would change his name, due to the previous two monarchs named Charles having a bad reputation among certain people (not I, the Stuarts are fascinating and highly underappreciated).
The last British monarch to have a regal name other than their given first name was George VI, I believe
Yeah – that’s what I thought. I watched ‘The Crown’. They addressed this issue.
Well, its not like there was another Charles II who’s name became a byword for royal inbreeding.
He should just go ahead and call himself John II and rip that band aid off. It’s been 800 years already,
Royalty fail.
Hey now, seventy years of duties (while also being a hilarious troll) ain’t bad at all.
That blind kid had it coming
I can’t believe they reeled in royals from all over the world just to tell them that.
It was his last chance to take the piss out of the entire British media. No way was he missing it.
Explains where Charles got his brains.
Another flood of prog tears over the O-care semi-repeal. Best quotes so far:
Being a woman is now a pre-existing condition.
These people voted for DEATH.
“Being a woman is now a pre-existing condition”
TRANSPHOBIC!!!!!
The bill hasnt passed senate yet and is close to Obamacare. I cant take them seriously
That said i am not sure what gop is doing. They should just wait
I second the motion for death
Sorry. It had to be repealed. If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at the democrats for fucking it up so badly in the first place.
Hey now, I thought you had to pass the bill before you could see what’s in it.
That’s pretty much what happened.
A Facederp friend said “this is a list of things that I’m no longer covered for”. Man, her insurance company was really quick about modifying her coverage and telling her about it!
Particularly since it hasn’t passed the Senate, or the President’s desk yet..
Pelosi said the Repubs are rushing to pass it because they’re terrified to see it’s effects
Please share that story about how life expectancy has actually decreased since O-Care passed.
https://nypost.com/2017/05/04/democrats-immature-response-to-passing-of-obamacare-repeal/
I’m sure the stupid party will pay at the polls if this passes the Senate, not because they repealed O’Care, but for attempting to replace it. I can’t understand why they want to own this so badly.
Motorcycle-free Civil War burial news
“PATRIOT [Ohio] — Cadot Blessing Camp #126 of the Sons of the Union Veterans, recently replaced the illegible headstone of Civil War veteran Wilhelm Rodeman at Bethesda Cemetery….
“The headstone ceremony was put on by the the Sons of Union Veterans, who regularly replace damaged or illegible headstones of Union Veterans around Gallia County. The new stone was provided by the federal government, which provides headstones in the case of illegible gravemarkers.”
It is not the weekend yet Eddie. Stand down with the civil war posts. Premature posting.
Update on my entrepreneurial venture into cannabis growing.
As mentioned previously, we have completed phase 1 of building our hoop houses and maxing out the legal size of our med grow at our current location. The hoop houses are properly ventilated, we have reservoir watering systems to make feeding easier, and a semblance of a production line from going from cloning/seed to solos, to teens, to being canned in various size cans for vegetation and eventually into flower. We have things setup so we can do some multi-variate testing to determine which strains are going to be best and which methods. We now have time to focus on dealing with pest issues and some minor improvements. Our employee number 1/sweat equity partner showed up this week and is already helping us tremendously.
So now is the time on Sprockets when we … look for land. We need acreage for the rec grow and we started that process this week. We’ve looked at multiple properties and are looking at more next week. Our goal is to have a lease to own signed by the end of the month. Then we can build the second med grow and use it to bootstrap to the rec grow. I’m bug-bitten, sun-burned, and thorn-scratched from climbing through timber lots, but happy. This is really on the verge of coming together. Also, harvest is in two and half weeks so I’ll be distilling my first batches of a couple of different products using our own plants.
Teens, eh?
I’ll just say I hope you’re free from legal oppression while pursuing your business.
Thank you. And, I am or I sure as shit wouldn’t be posting about it this openly.
Sessions is of mild concern, but we are completely legal, following all applicable laws, have good representation, and the local State has a vested interest to the tune of about 7 Billion Dollars in revenue from legal cannabis last year to cooperate with the feds on pursuing any existing black market folks first. If that activity picks up, we’ll know to get out.
Free samples?
Feel free to send some to the Glibs 😛 We’ll do a whole write up. Maybe.
“I was gonna write this piece, but then…” you know the rest.
That would be a good review section. Do it
I don’t have access to a variety out here, or it would definitely be a standing feature. I love knowing the particular strain, but that probably only happens about 40% of the time.
The other 60%: smoke it if you got it
Pretty much. Out, too, and no one seems to be carrying. Ugh.
‘I love knowing the particular strain…’
https://www.leafly.com/news/strains-products/introducing-leaflys-new-cannabis-strain-identifier-tool
There’s an app for that.
Gasp! I had no idea and I read leafly weekly. I am ashamed.
*smacks Riven’s nose*
Bad Riven!
Sorry. Here, have some Mob Boss…
I think I just may type up a Belly Up To The Bowl as a companion piece in the comments for tomorrow’s airing.
Topic: Witch’s Brew.
So you’re the asshole that tried smacking Riven around, Want to try that again with full grown men?
Ha!…?!
I missed that story.
For the record, I’ve never hit a woman, just being playful. Simmer down, hotsauce.
You know, I would, but that would be illegal to mail it. If, however, any Glibs find themselves near Portland/Vantucky (that’s little vancouver, WA), message me. It is legal to give out samples, and I’ve started using it as tips for various folks that i know partake. I gave some hash to my barber this morning as she was telling me last time how hard it is to find. I damn near thought she was going to … let’s simply say she was ecstatic.
Also, heh.
If you could sell guns along with your weed I would drive all the way there just to bask in the libertarian utopia of the free market.
Brings this to mind.
Stopped by this place last summer.
All it needs is weed.
No, it also needs Mexican babes willing to have ass sex.
Bro, do you even libertarian?
Gee, you think they have any in Arizona?
Probably. I’m certainly willing to research the subject…
I’ll keep you in mind if I’m ever in the area. Many thanks in advance for the local hospitality. 🙂 Your barber sounds like my kind of sheila.
Too bad they won’t let you grow coca, too.
And Ted goes full Pablo Escobar.
We all knew it was only a matter of time.
You wish you had someone who could hook you up with the good stuff.
You know me too well, Ted.
Hell, I just wish I had a reliable hookup for trees.
Here you go, Riven.
I know it was you, Ted. You broke my heart.
All kidding aside, other than the tooth damage from the lye it’s traditionally chewed with, Coca sounds like a pretty harmless and kickass plant.
Cocaine, OTOH…
It does smell amazing. Much better than sandalwood.
Coca is an incredibly nice thing to have on a hike at altitude.
If you ever pass through the Gorge area (Hood River) needing a place to stop for a drink let me know. Good luck with your adventure, persistence will pay off.
Will do, and thanks in advance. I make it out there on the motorcycle on occasion.
I fucking hate living in Illinois.
“Out, too, and no one seems to be carrying. Ugh.”
Ahhhh the good old days before legalization. Who remembers buying gasoline soaked pot because it was th only stuff in town?
Congratulations! Glad to hear your hard work is getting you somewhere. Look forward to hearing more!
Be sure to investigate the water rights you have on that land.
Also YAY to non-sketchy-non-hippie-non-scum becoming involved in the marijuana industry.
Thanks. I think that’s one of the advantages our team is going to have. A mix of cannabusiness and cannaculture types. Honestly though, most of the folks I’ve been meeting are pretty non-sketch. Just farmers/gardeners who deal with weed instead of other crops.
And yeah, water rights are a mandatory part of the process. You have to prove you have them or you can’t get licensed.
Are you hiring?
I don’t even like weed, I just end up with my knees cutting out on me after a few tokes, Alcohol is the shit that always gets me into trouble.
Not yet.
1. If I had a dollar for every offer of an investment or to work for us, I’d not need to open the actual business.
2. We’re being hyper-selective about who gets a piece and who works for us at this stage. Trying to build a team with the right mix of old school weed knowledge, business acumen, and process/manufacturing background.
Fair enough. I did also use to sell glass pipes to head shops. (A buddy of mine from WoW ran a glass blowing shop and hooked me up with a job.) I kind of gave up after about 6 months of cops constantly harassing me. I really don’t smoke weed.
That’s a shame about the cops. Are you somewhere it is still illegal? I know that good glass is really in demand and the artistic stuff can fetch big prices. It also seems like it lends itself well to selling online. I’ve kind of picked up on all the side/related stuff. So if you want to chat about it, feel free to send me a message.
Sort of. I don’t really touch that stuff anymore, but I can maybe hook you up with a good glass blower.
There’s not really a private conversation option around here. All of our conversations our public.
My only question is: How much do you owe the State?
LIFESTYLE TIP:
When autoerotically asphyxiating oneself, it’s prudent to write-up a suicide note just in case you accidentally die. Be sure to mention in the note that you intentionally left your pants around your ankles to symbolize something, perhaps life itself, catching you with your pants down. Congratulations, now your potential death isn’t so embarrassing which frees your mind up for valuable concentration necessary to stay alive while masturbating. So remember to always be safe, have fun, and conceal your shame!
That’s more of a death style tip, innit?
Should have linked an INXS song
Nice.
Like this?
something something David Carradine?
Personal experience?
Leave a note to read a file on your computer; one armed with an executable batch file to delete your browsing history as well.
We’ve found an expert in these matters.
You tried to autoerotically asphyxiate yourself and failed?
Should we tell him you don’t breathe through your dick, so “choking it” isn’t actually autoerotic asphyxiation?
My dick has gills anyways.
Stealing this

I take back what I’ve said about Katherine Mangu Ward
The tweet she’s responding too shows how completely ACLU has gone off the rails.
“You don’t get to violate unjust laws that violate your rights, because they violate your rights! Dummy!”
The amount of stupid that poured out in response is actually kind of impressive.
My deeply held principle is that your house is actually mine. Don’t discriminate against me and give it to me.
We live in a secular society, at times it’s confusing, but you’ll eventually get used to it.
Heaven forbid, we will never have religions that widely promote the killing of innocent or marry children.
Why do your beliefs over ride someone else’s right to exist?
Yeah, ignorance is the greatest argument to violate individual rights.
Most of those people don’t even know what they’re opposing other than how they feelz
The strawman army cometh
So many strawmen in that thread.
The responses are derptastic:
SO YOU WILL TREAT US THE SAME AS ANYONE ELSE OR I WILL DEMAND THAT MEN KIDNAP OR KILL YOU.
I hope Sloopy is on the mend.
He mixed up the oral and anal thermometers at the house, so he’s been getting worse.
People still use those? Rectal thermometers, that is.
The really sad part is that it was an ear thermometer he stuck up his ass.
Obligatory
He’s not really sick. He’s just experimenting.
why not both (at the same time)?
He said it was for science, but he was smiling.
Part of Sloopy’s magic act?
Another flood of prog tears over the O-care semi-repeal.
Where is the empirical evidence showing O-care has made America *healthier*?
I’ll be over here, holding my breath, as I wait.
Life expectancy held steady at around 45 years for most of the nation’s history. Then Obamacare passed and BAM.
More people can check the box duh
More motorcycle-free Civil War burial news: Dedication of the graves of Union veterans who died in a Washington State mental institution
“For Jim Dimond and the rest of the [SSons of Union Veterans of the Civil War], the work is not done. “Identifying veterans, buried and unburied, is an ongoing process,” said Dimond, “even of the Civil War. Our goal is to make sure they receive the full military honors they deserve, befitting honorably discharged veterans of the American Civil War a dignity owed by a grateful nation.””
Sons not SSons
Secret Nazi slip of the tongue?
I figured they were SS agents.
Uh… that’s not a very.. uh… historical… account of the reasons for the state of the Iraqi Army…
AHEM! I think someone wrote about that.
So, no one in the commentariat is going to bring up that Obama “considered gayness?”
I wonder just how much backlash there would be against someone else if they made remarks about this in their hagiography. From mulling over being gay like he’s deciding which sports team to cheer for in complete rejection of the biological determinism dogmatically pushed by the left to dismissing being gay because it was apparently just too easy.
“same-sex relationship would be less challenging and demanding than developing one with the opposite sex”
What heterosexual man hasn’t come to that conclusion.
I know i did a long time ago. But…well, it’d mean celibacy. So challenging it is.
The less you know about something, the easier it looks.
That’s a pretty dismissive and ignorant comment coming from Mr. Sensitive or whatever the fuck image he’s been concocting for himself over the years. “You gays have it so easy.”
“God this sounds just like a straight relationship.”
–Everyone who has ever heard me talk about a relationship I’m in.
You’re Willem Dafoe?
No offense meant. I was just kidding. But, you must agree that the whole sharing of clothes thing in a gay relationship must make things less difficult than in a heterosexual relationship.
I wear the squeeze’s clothes all the time!
Yes, but how often does he wear yours?
the whole sharing of clothes thing
If only. I look like sausage in casing if I try to borrow a sweatshirt from the current BF. Also, no offense taken. I just think it’s funny how often people are surprised that relationship friction is so universal even when women (or men) aren’t involved at all.
Humans, eh?
Seriously. Can’t live with them, can’t read once they’re all deaded by an apocalypse that mysteriously leaves you intact because you broke your coke-bottle spectacles.
I used to room with lesbians, They just go through relationship drama twice as fast, with the U-Haul in the parking lots.
In my experience, gay dudes really aren’t that big of drama queens.
Really? Gay dudes aren’t drama queens? That’s, like, what gay dudes do, unless their name is Jesse or Hemingway.
And yet he still seemed willing to throw away his positive and uplifting image of gay identity so he could win power. And then suddenly became a profound supporter again went public approval went past 50%.
Truly a loyal ally.
I just threw up in my mouth a little.
But he’s so dreamy.
Nightmares count as dreams.
Bisexuals are awfully inconvenient for the “biological determinism” argument as well. Which is why, despite them obviously being far more numerous than “pure” gays, the mainstream of gay culture is dedicated to “erasing” them.
I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to deride Barack’s alleged intellectual evaluation of the practical reality of bisexuality. He obviously is sexually attracted to women, but were he to have any open sexual relationship with a man he would be rendered sociall 100% gay by those around him.. it is not unreasonable for a bisexual who strongly leans towards women to stay in the closet under such circumstances.
He obviously is sexually attracted to
womenWookies. What’s that now? I haven’t seen any evidence of this.
Uh, if you’re counting bisexual women, the number is overwhelming.
Sorry dude, Drunk college girls aren’t really bi.
Pornography has lied to me yet again!
I don’t consider the majority of women who claim to be “bisexual” any such thing. But that’s just based on my observations over the years.
Meh, maybe it’s a generational thing. I don’t know what your definition of ‘bisexual’ is but I’ve known more women who have had relationships with men and women than gay men.
A lot of this will shift with changes in social acceptance. I’m fairly certain you’ll see an increase in boy-on-boy dabbling as Kinsey 1-3s (and maybe 4s) are less inclined to be pushed by social pressure toward strict heterosexuality and 5s less likely to just say “fuck it I’m totally gay.”
I had never heard of the Kinsey scale. I propose renaming the categories with a 1 being a Bert Reynolds and 6 being a Liberace.
How have you never heard of the Kinsey scale?
Also you’re falsely equating gender-normative behavior with sexual orientation.
What if you had some kind of Nolan chart of sexuality with Liberace on one end and, I don’t know, Richard the Lionheart on the other?
Probably better than the abacus thing that Bill Nye used.
I thought Richard the Lionhearted’s straight-cred may have taken a few hits in the last century.
“4, 2017 at 4:48 pm
What if you had some kind of Nolan chart of sexuality with Liberace on one end and, I don’t know, Richard the Lionheart on the other?”
Richard was an ancestor of my step mom’s, and an expert on siege warfare. He was also gay.
That’s the point, it’s a Nolan chart, so you’ve got your “Straight-Gay” axis, and then you’ve got your more effeminate homosexual (Liberace) to hyper masculine Spartans (Richard the Lionheart) axis.
I think a very hefty percentage of women, most of whom would not admit to being bisexual (or gay) are in fact bi using the definition of sexual attraction. That is they are just as sexually aroused by females as males although most would never act on it either because lack of opportunity or socialization.
Similarly I agree a large percentage of those who claim to be bi aren’t. They like being seen as cool and edgy by their friends and want to portray an image of not being hung up by sexuality and they might even make out with a girl if the opportunity presented itself but they are not really aroused by other girls and would be unlikely to ever enter into a relationship with one.
It depends on what one considers “bisexual” and “gay.”
If everyone who finds someone of the same gender attractive, or who reports having had sex with someone of the same gender is “bisexual” or “gay” then “bisexuals” clearly outnumber gays for the super obvious reason that way more people fit both of those categories than “people willing to define themselves by their homosexual exclusivity.”
If only people who have ever been in a serious relationship with someone of the same gender is gay, then there’s an argument that “pure” gays are more numerous. But AFAICT, if you use the standard most people use… “more or less ok with having some gay sex” … the largest cohort is “straight” people followed by “bisexual” people with pure “gay” people a very, very distant third.
Because gays are so relatively rare in total, the myth of pure gayness (and pure straightness) is required for tribal unity. But it’s not what people report about their own sexual behavior.
I don’t know that mainstream straight male culture is all that keen on bisexuals, either…
It’s just fine with female bisexuality, if you catch my drift.
I do.
It’s called the “zero penis fantasy”.
Unless there is a whole other mechanism to explain bisexuality. Citations needed.
Most of the countries listed here report close to parity with regards to homosexual and bisexual identification.
My thesis is that, because bisexual identification is stigmatized in favor of pure homo/heterosexual identification, this means that bisexuals actually outnumber pure gays. They’re just not an identifiable political or social bloc, in part because they can “pass” as either homo or heterosexual.
I’m not sure I agree with your assessment that it’s due to a specific stigma against bisexuals. Jeremy Bentham already had this covered in the 1700s when he indicated that social revulsion against same sex sexual activity meant people with a very high interest were going to be the primary participants in it and people with a lower interest would avoid it to avoid the negative social pressure. (I’m paraphrasing, it’s been a while since I’ve skimmed Offenses Against Oneself). I largely agree that there are probably a great many people who fall somewhere in between, although I doubt there are that many Kinsey 3s running around. I do think–as I mentioned above–that as social pressure against same sex sexual behavior and relationships diminishes you’ll see more people dabble with same sex (or even opposite sex) encounters and relationships where they might not have been inclined previously.
I think we more or less agree.
I go a little hard on the “stigma against bisexuals” angle to point out that yes, culturally, “pure gays” have a social reason to exclude bisexuals. The most openly I’ve heard this discussed is in the context of lesbians bemoaning the fake-gayness of bisexual women, especially femme bisexual women. No one else seems to recognize that bisexuality is dangerous to both the biological determinism argument and to monolithic gay tribal identity.
If a bisexual is “straight” today and “gay” tomorrow, why would either tribe accept them? I think it’s pretty apparent most straight people consider anyone who is not revolted by the idea of same-gender sex to be not-straight. My experience with the invisibility/slight stigma afforded to bisexuals in the gay world is that the “pure gay” tribe is similarly purist in their thinking about who is not-gay.
This makes sense to me, because both tribes are comprised of humans who love the idea of tribal uniformity.
Or, as Dennis Miller once quipped, “Come on, bisexuals, get off the fence and pick a hole.”
That guy was so fucking wishy-washy he couldn’t even get laid without hedging his bets
HOW DOES SOMEONE CONSIDER GAYNESS?
“You know, I’m kind of thinking about you know, maybe, being a little gay this weekend …”
Great.
Now when I mention that I can’t stand the guy, the proggies will call me a racist and a homophobe.
Why would they leave out misogynist?
You know if they had brought that story up 9 yeaars ago, I might care. Now it’s just meh.
Obama can cheat on Michelle with an actual Wookie from Kashyyk, wait, you’re burying the lead that we’re in contact with Kashyyk.
Of course we’re in contact. The good folks at Czerka found some valuable resources on that planet.
Well, maybe more ornery than valuable, if Michelle is representative.
““But there is no doubting that Goldyn gave eighteen-year-old Barry a vastly more positive and uplifting image of gay identity and self-confidence than he had known in Honolulu.”
Yes, this gay fellow made such a positive impression that Obama continued to oppose gay marriage until about 2008.
*2012, when Joe Biden came out for it and forced his hand while anonymous sources reported how pissed Barry was about it.
I have it on good authority, (SF) that Michelle actually has a penis, so……dudes gay. NTTIAWWT
I was actually working so I missed the afternoon music links. So in its place, I give you Monstercat! The best music not played with guitars. You’re welcome.
“The best music not played with guitars.”
You’re right, suck it, Mozart, you [derogatory reference to sexual preference deleted].
You know what I’m just gonna come out and say it: Classical music does fuck all for me. I appreciate some of the more noteworthy pieces but in general I find anything and everything made after the 19th century to just be more enjoyable. So suck it, nerds.
Meh, I like both. But I will say that if you’re not moved by, say, any number of Bach’s organ works, you have no soul. ?
Yeah I bet you’d love to work Bach’s organ wouldn’t you? 😛
And here I refrained from an ‘upright organ’ joke.
I prefer the ‘pump organ’ thank you very much.
Classical music is a mixed bag, but it can be good.
Example
See, the conqu’ring hero comes!
Sound the trumpets! Beat the drums!
Sports prepare! The laurel bring!
Songs of triumph to him sing!
See the godlike youth advance!
Breathe the flutes and lead the dance!
Myrtle wreaths and roses twine
to deck the hero’s brow divine!
See, the conqu’ring hero comes!
Sound the trumpets! Beat the drums!
Sports prepare! The laurel bring!
Songs of triumph to him sing!
See, the conqu’ring hero comes!
Sound the trumpets! Beat the drums!
I enjoy classical. One interesting thing for me is the more modern the music, the less of it I like, but the more I like it. So I can listen to almost all baroque music, but I don’t get emotionally involved with it – it’s essentially Muzak that doesn’t make me want to kill people. As the timeline moves through the classical, romantic, and modern, I like a smaller percentage of compositions, but I enjoy them more. So I love a piece such as Satie’s Gnossienne no. 1 a great deal, but I’m not an uncritical fan of Satie, whereas I can listen to anything by Vivaldi, but won’t be moved by anything (except the Four Seasons)
To be fair, Vivaldi only wrote one concerto, but he wrote it 500 times.
Which was good for his music students, I imagine.
And at least it’s a fun concerto to listen to.
That’s a good line. But yuh stoles it.
Iron Maiden is classic as all hell.
I like them, too. At least their first 4 albums.

I rather enjoyed reading Cytotoxic’s movie reviews and political prognostications in that thread. He’s almost the Platonic ideal of wrong.

Oh that thread. Oh, the times we had…
Also, it’s good to remind myself that HM Is Much Smarter Than Me
And also that I’m not at the rock bottom…
I’m almost disappointed Cytotoxic wasn’t around in November, because he went on some crazy long winded screeds and flipouts about how Trump will never, ever win and nominating him pretty much killed the Republican Party. Of course he’d probably pivot pretty quickly from ignoring how colossally wrong he is and instead start flipping out about how much smarter he is than everyone else.
Oh, he’s adorable.
Right. Soros or Buffett gain and lose more money in a day than PB has ever had in his life.
I’m pretty sure the Democrats in my congressional district have some sort of email alert system with suggested phrases to troll our Republican congressman’s Facebook status. He just posted a status on the repeal and replace vote and within minutes there were hundreds of angry comments. Common themes were “blood is on your hands”, dead babies, and “I am no longer a Republican”. They move so fast they blot out any positive comments.
This is like, what, the 70th time the House has voted to repeal Obamacare? And it still stands unrepealed.
My instinct, and common sense, dictate to dismiss this comment as just sock puppetry. But I’m learning I need to stop underestimating the level of stupidity people are capable of.

Crazy Bitch Who Thinks Everyone Is Staring At Her Tits Uses Sexual Harassment Hotline Too Often
…….kidding…..
Actually there was this girl @ a former startup i worked for in the late 1990s…. she’d come to us from Deloitte and Touche (and somehow seemed to need to work that into every single conversation she had with anyone, ever)…. and before she was canned, had managed to file something like 20 different harassment suits against other employees. Including me. I honestly think she was mentally ill because i think i’d only ever spoken to her with phrases like “oh really?” and “that’s nice”.
She was the type of person who CC’d the entire company whenever replying to anything, just so she could ‘keep people in the loop’. She was very proactive and constantly leveraging synergies.

Oh, and sometimes they go MARSA and you can’t see AF1 at all.
Yeah, I may not find them on flighthaware (a company with which my company has a very strong relationship!), but I’ll be listening to ATC and should be able to catch them landing.
None of the ZNY or ZDC channels has any listeners at the moment. I take that to mean they’re not airborne yet.
Have they declared Skylaw yet?
I will waste you!
Oddly enough, that is the correct response.
Sneaky little fucker landed before I even started watching! No point in tracking him on his return as his presence won’t be that disruptive to the civil air traffic around Andrews.

I think the GOP did a great job taking down the ACA. Much better outcome than expected.
It gets rid of the individual mandate.
It sunsets the ObamaCare Medicaid expansion, which is amazing by itself, but even better? It shows the way to get rid of Medicaid completely.
Anybody who thinks vouchers are an excellent, pragmatic libertarian solution to public schools should be just as happy about the GOP plan to phase out the ObamaCare Medicaid expansion and replace it with subsidies that let patients go out and buy their own policies on the private market.
The GOP subsidies are to Medicaid what vouchers are to public schools.
If the GOP had called them “healthcare vouchers”, that might have stirred up more opposition. Call them “subsidies” or “Weigel bucks”, I don’t care–as long as they behave like vouchers.
On second thought, better not call them “Weigel bucks”.
That was going too far.
Ya know, Ken, I’ve quite appreciated your analysis of the bill this afternoon.
Thanks!
. . . but now the others will tell you not to encourage me.
Ken’s gotten into the optimism pills again.
This is a legitimately good bill.
The legitimate complaints I see against it are for what it doesn’t do. I wish it abolished the Federal Reserve, too, but at 217-213, there probably wasn’t enough support to add that.
It’s a rare bird.
Welch is on that other site writing about how the Freedom Caucus abandoned their principles, but I can’t see where.
States can let insurers off the hook for preexisting conditions if they want.
States can make Medicaid eligibility contingent on having a job if they want.
There are other things I wish it did, too. But if the support isn’t there, then . . . you can’t do that. You can’t do more than the House will support in a vote, and given that this thing barely squeaked by–with 20 Republicans voting against it–I think this is the best they could do right now.
Nobody can say I never support anything Congress does. I’m even on the record saying that Barack Obama was right . . . once. It’s about principles not principals!
Oh, and I think this thing got done despite Trump’s efforts, not because of them. Boehner couldn’t have gotten this thing passed. I think the credit belongs to Ryan on this.
“States can make Medicaid eligibility contingent on having a job if they want.”
Can you believe that?!

It gets rid of the individual mandate.
That’s nice and all, but the Supreme Court case/precedent has been set. It’s like the Volstead Act being repealed without the 18th amendment being repealed.
Oh, the penaltax ruling was split, and it’s moot now that the individual mandate has no basis in law.
I don’t mean “moot” in the technical sense.
You’re not going to pull the rug out from under 20 million uninsured Americans by overruling the penaltax decision in the future in some unrelated case.
What I’m trying to say is that if they overturned Wickard v. Filburn, half the federal government might suddenly be unconstitutional, and that surely plays into consideration by the courts. The penaltax case doesn’t have that problem anymore.
The argument is still laying out there stinking up the place, but I bet any cases that use it are likely to be decided based on their merits rather than any deference to the penaltax case.
In all honesty, it kind of makes those of us look bad who argued that there was no way Congress would ever vote ObamaCare down once it was enacted. We changed the party that dominated first the House then the Senate, and then we elected a President who promised to repeal ObamaCare.
Sometimes I’m glad to be wrong. Sometimes it feels good to be wrong.
it’s moot now that the individual mandate has no basis in law
But for how long? And the concept of a penaltax is not limited to insurance. It could be anything.
In all honesty, it kind of makes those of us look bad who argued that there was no way Congress would ever vote ObamaCare down once it was enacted.
Was it really repealed though? I guess some of the core components were repealed (well, not yet) but surely a large portion of it remains, probably enough to make things worse, like community rating, etc.
I guess I can take solace in the fact that the penaltax concept was never the majority opinion. Now I remember the decision was a mishmash of concepts. The “liberal” justices said that the mandate was fully constitutional under the commerce clause. The “conservative” justices said it wasn’t constitutional at all. One guy said it was constitutional, but that it wasn’t legal as a regulation of commerce, only as a tax. So only one guy said penaltax is cool. Damn, now that I think of it, how the hell did that make the mandate legal? I guess you don’t need a majority decision really?
I highly recommend “Problematic” on Comedy Central. It is the mother lode.
Thomas Massie, via the Facederps:
“The Congressional Budget Office had no time to even provide Congress with a preliminary estimate of the full cost of this bill.”
Sometimes moral issues don’t have a price tag, and I see the individual mandate like that.
Let’s say the federal government in 1858 decided to use eminent domain to free the slaves, and to avoid the Civil War, they decided that fair compensation should be made to slave holders for the federal appropriation of their property.
That’s almost entirely a moral issue for me in every dimension. Should slaves be freed by the federal government? Yeah. Should the federal government compensate individuals for the private property they seize? Yeah. Does the matter of cost factor into either of those decisions?
Not for me, it doesn’t.
And I kinda feel that way about using the coercive power of government to force individuals to buy something because they exist. I kinda feel that way about the federal government forcing us to eat broccoli. Sometimes protecting people’s right and liberty and justice aren’t cost effective.
“This bill should have included measures that allow Americans to take charge of their own healthcare and get the government out of the way. These measures include allowing the deduction of health insurance costs from income taxes, giving everyone the ability to purchase insurance across state lines, and allowing individuals to band together through any organization to purchase insurance.”
I like all of those things, and I don’t see why we can’t include them in a follow up bill. In fact, they should make that bill the center of the Republican campaign to keep the House in 2018.
. . . there is one glaring exception in that list. The reason you can’t purchase insurance across state lines is because private insurance is being gouged by Medicaid differently in each state. You would have to force insurance companies in Nebraska to sell insurance to people in New York state, where gouging of local insurance companies is out of control. If people could buy insurance in Nebraska and take it with them to New York state, the insurance companies would be devastated. The PPOs are obsessed with making sure you stay in network with hospitals in which their costs are limited by contract so they can’t get gouged, and you’re not just going to let the patients go out of network–but into another state besides?
You can’t get that until you get Medicaid under control, and this bill gets that ball rolling. When’s the last time the House voted to cut an entitlement program like this? Was it the Gingrich congress cutting welfare programs some 23 years ago? Regardless, the way to get insurance sold across state lines is to slash Medicaid. High concentrations of Medicaid patients in large cities in certain states make selling insurance across state lines impossible without creating an insurance crisis.
This would be like when California “deregulated” by letting the utilities buy electricity across state lines–but wouldn’t let them charge their customers higher rates when they went up. I remember when Gray Davis threatened to throw Edison executives in prison if they stopped producing power above the rates at which they could charge for it. No doubt, the problem with that wasn’t the deregulation of where they can buy power–it was leaving the existing regulation in place that capped rates. Likewise, letting people buy insurance across state lines wouldn’t be what broke the insurance companies; it would be keeping the existing Medicaid intact. So how likely are the voters to trust the GOP to get rid of Medicaid as the solution in that scenario, when “deregulation” will be blamed for causing the insurance crisis in the first place?
Meanwhile, why oppose a bill that gets us closer to being able to deregulate so that we can buy insurance like that by actually cutting the ObamaCare Medicaid expansion?
There’s no reason that insurance companies couldn’t charge more for insurance in one state vs. another, regardless of where the company is based.
Once again, the insurance companies are being gouged by more than 50% over cost (on average). In places where Medicaid patients make up a higher percentage of the local population, they’re getting gouged even more.
The question isn’t whether insurance companies can charge higher premiums. We know they can do that–that’s part of the problem. The bigger question is whether they can control their costs. Right now, they control their costs by limiting you to in network hospitals with which they have a cost containment contract. You want to require them to sell policies to people out of network?
How much cost can insurance companies cut–when they’re being gouged for costs that their own patients don’t even incur?
Take a look at this graph again:
http://www.aha.org/research/reports/tw/chartbook/2016/chart4-6.pdf
Look at that chart. Feel it in your bones. Think about what it means.
It means that private insurers are making up for the losses providers suffer for treating Medicaid patients.
Yes, insurers can and are raising premiums and raising deductibles to cover the inflated costs they get gouged by providers to cover the losses providers suffer for treating Medicare and Medicaid patients.
But insurers have no control over those costs. How could they control those costs? Those Medicaid patients aren’t even their customers!
And yet the more people there are on Medicaid, the more they get gouged.
You’re an insurance company, and you sell an insurance policy to someone who lives in the wealthy area of a wealthy state–and then they move to Philadelphia and go to a community hospital that only breaks even because it gouges the hell out of private pay patients–because they’re located in a poor neighborhood with a high percentage of Medicaid patients and suffer horrendous losses as a result of that.
How does the insurance company gauge its costs to price those policies nationwide? Their costs aren’t just a function of how much healthcare any particular patient receives. Their costs are also a function of how many Medicare patients there are in that community.
When a hospital in a shitty neighborhood can’t find enough private pay patients to gouge to make up for the losses they take treating Medicaid patients, do you know what happens? They close.
In recent years, 16 (sixteen) hospitals have closed around New York City for that very reason.
http://citylimits.org/2017/01/04/hospital-closures-and-medicaid-shifts-took-toll-on-nycs-health/
Before they gave up the ghost, they charged every private pay patient up the ying yang–but there just weren’t enough private pay patients in that neighborhood to make up for the Medicaid patients.
And in the midst of that, Obama, in his infinite stupidity, expanded Medicaid. I shouldn’t say he was stupid–he did it on purpose. The purpose of ObamaCare was to expand Medicaid and force healthy young people to buy insurance they wouldn’t use to make up for all the losses providers would incur from expanding Medicaid. Being a progressive is all about using the coercive power of government to force people to make sacrifices for the common good–and ObamaCare was a way of forcing the middle class to sacrifice their cost and quality of care in order to obtain more free healthcare for more poor people. It was all about the Medicaid expansion–and the rest of it was trying to compensate for the Medicaid expansion.
There are very few problems with our healthcare system that can’t ultimately be traced back to Medicare and Medicaid. The reason our whole healthcare system is structured the way it is, public payers, private payers, everything, is to account for the losses providers suffer for treating Medicare and Medicaid patients. There is no solution to our healthcare problems that doesn’t include cutting Medicaid. All the things we think will make the system better–haven’t happened or can’t happen because of Medicare and Medicaid.
Insurers can raise premiums, but they can’t control the costs of patients who aren’t even their members. That “out of network” penalty, is effectively trying to steer you away from hospitals that treat a lot of Medicaid patients–so they don’t get gouged too much.
Isn’t it Ironic
