Hey Hyperion, per our conversation about low light outdoor photography. I thought of a few more tips other then widest possible aperature and higher iso (don’t fear the iso). General rule is that you can handhold a camera only as slow as the inverse of your focal lenth ie if your shooting at 60mm your shutter speed should be no slower than 1/60. However, if you get lenses with image stabilization you can improve upon that by up to a full stop so at 60mm technically you should be ok at 1/30 with IS on. Also, you can shoot in RAW format and intentionally underexpose (shoot at a faster speed then your meter says) up to a full stop and than brighten the picture when processing the raw image. The other suggestion if you don’t want to live a tripod around is to go with a monopod which will also help with camera shake.

When I home I’ll often take my monopod with ballhead. I’ll carry it collapsed either on a caribiner clipped to my belt loop or I’ll just keep the camera attached to it and carry over my shoulder with camera strap around neck. Then allI have to do is unlock the segments let them drop to ground, relock and shoot. You can still get off a quick shot with mono still collapsed if needed. Lighter obviously helps in that regard.

Thanks again. I can’t wait to actually get a DSLR camera in my hand so I can start experimenting with all this stuff. I decided to get the D5500, but Amazon keep selling out on the deal I want. Next time I see it I’d better pull the trigger. Or just pay $50 more from another source.
Picked it up in the closest store. It’s been doing duty as my everyday camera for about 2 months now. I wouldn’t use it for a high-end client, but for everyday shooting, it’s a really good entry-level camera. Much lighter than my other cameras, and the bundle with the extra lens is good. (They also have a bundle deal on the D5500.)
I have a super lightweight tripod that has a carry bag I hook onto my camera backpack.
As AlmightyJB said, I always shoot in RAW format.

Thanks, SP, I looked at the 3400, but decided on the 5500 because of the superior low light capability, supposedly despite the same ISO range, and the far superior AF points.
What do you use for your main cameras when working?

I remember the outrage machine after Harambe was shot. The way I look at it is that the zoo employees who shot him did not want to do so. They just felt they had no choice before the gorilla ripped the kid apart. I wonder if they’d be happy if that would have happened? I love the way that the outrage machine figured they are a better judge of animal behavior than people who have been running a zoo as a career. That’s a real gorilla dumbies, not a fucking Disney cartoon. Same as it ever was. Derp, derp never changes.

At the risk of provoking jeers, the Harambe reference did become racist–depending on how it was used. Like a gun being neither good nor evil–it just depends on how it’s used–the Harambe reference, when intended to be racist, was exactly that.
It wasn’t racist when they were making fun of the animal rights people who overreacted to the killing of a gorilla to save a child.
It was racist when they were making fun of BLM activists who overreacted to the killing of Michael Brown.
The weird thing about it is that using the Harambe reference to drive anti-free speech social justice warriors crazy became not racist, again, too.
Most people didn’t understand the “dicks out for Harambe” reference in any terms–they just thought it was a funny thing to say, with no idea what it originally meant, what it came to mean in the wake of Ferguson, or what it meant in terms of tweaking the noses of social justice warriors.
There’s like a predictable cycle these things seem to go through. The cycle sort of repeated itself with Pepe the Frog.

Like I said, the original Harambe meme was a joke about how the animal rights activists overreacted to a gorilla being killed to save a human child. It was making fun of them overreacting.
When BLM came out big in Ferguson over the Michael Brown shooting, they started making fun of BLM for overreacting to Michael Brown being shot like they had made fun of animal rights people overreacting to Harambe being shot.
In other words, they were calling Michael Brown a gorilla.
“Dicks out” is gangster rap talk for having your gun drawn. “Dicks out for Harambe” was, thus, making fun of blacks who were ready to go to battle over a gorilla–or that’s the way people started to use it anyway.
It’s unclear whether the kid who started the “Dicks out for Harambe” with a picture of himself with his gun drawn meant it to be racist or whether he was just making fun of people–especially BLM–for overreacting.
It may have even been self-effacing–like a Vanilla Ice parody of a white suburban kid trying to be a gangster. Regardless, people started using it in racist ways to denigrate Michael Brown and BLM generally.
It’s hard to remember before Trump now, but it was just six months ago when the whole world seemed to have social justice warrior and it didn’t seem like we were ever coming back. Back then, “Dicks out for Harambe” was also a way to tweak the noses of anti-free speech social justice warriors–because they didn’t understand why it was racist (or why it wouldn’t be) because they didn’t understand the meme any better than anyone else.
It just got into the news cycle that some RA’s at some colleges were telling students not to use a “Harambe” reference anymore because it could be racist. So, of course, everybody started using “Harambe” references because if it’s trangressive and no one knows why, that just makes using it even more hilarious.
