I don’t know, but I’m guessing that they’re using JS to check scrollheight and then using fixed position to stick it in the corner, similar to how collapsing navigation works. Problem being that calculating that and running video at the same time makes things janky. Plus, it’s obnoxious as shit.
I hate scrollheight (I’d assume that’s what it is) being used to force popovers onto the screen.
Similarly I hate menus that stay permanently at the top of the page – my browser does not handle that properly when I page through a story.

My favorite shitty web design element lately is the use of the parallax effect to force you to scroll past an ad in the middle of the content.
It sucks, because I’m a web developer and my wheelhouse is JavaScript, particularly for UI/front-end stuff, and it seems like half of what I do is convincing someone why they shouldn’t use JS to implement some overly-complicated, terrible, annoying design element. It’s usually trying to be too cute with navigation, but there’s a lot of gratuitous AJAX, animations triggered by scrollHeight, crap like that.
I’m a database developer, plus some simple web pages, but also am interested in desktop development. One of my favorite sites in a previous generation was the “User Interface Hall of Shame” (last update: 2000). I like to think I have a good grasp on user interface design. But what I see on the web today would make these guys spin in their graves. I cannot think of a worse development for usability than the lack of any kind of “standards” on the web which is in complete opposition to what is considered good usability on the desktop.

Question for python-familiar people, part II=
I’ve been trying to run a script some guy cooked up to rip one’s entire Youtube history down to a SQL Db file.
As per his thin-instructions, i got anaconda, installed/added the listed dependent components, and now i want to run his script
I have an anaconda terminal window, and a folder with his script sitting in the root directory of a secondary drive (anticipating that the downloaded file will be a whopper)…
….and i’m at a standstill. I have no freaking idea how to “run” (if that’s even the proper nomenclature) the script, and i can’t even tell from his instructions whether i’m supposed to.
Basically, i’m at the part where he suggests the command line= “scrapy crawl yth_spider” but that does nothing for me. I think the term “crawl” is specific to his script because it tells me that its not a valid command for the Scrapy thing.
Any help? I feel like there’s a simple step he omitted because he didn’t anticipate complete noobs attempting this.

Speaking of snakes. I have had chicken eggs coming up missing the past few weeks. I finally caught the culprit a couple days ago. I spotted the 3 foot black snake leaving the coup. I grabbed the shot gun and put a round of #8 into him, but missed the head by a few inches. He slithered off and got underneath my trailer, right next to the tire. I tried to get him out, but he wouldn’t leave his spot. I had to get my truck, hook onto the trailer and pull move it. After moving the trailer, I hopped out quickly and spotted hum heading for the fence toward the pasture and the tall grass. I got off another shot that took his head clean off just before he got away.
I keep my chicken eggs in the fridge door. *shrug*

and the other was just an exe file i needed to download elsewhere.

and it went on its mission. its cooking now.

the solution was to (as per your instruction) to cd to the directory…
,,,,but not to the specific location of the .py script, but rather just the top level of the directory (as JB suggested), which had some assorted other files relevant to the scraper (scrapy.cfg)… but which apparently did the trick. the command line confused me because it had no corresponding file of that name (yth_spider) in the directory.
the result was that it pulled about 24,000 records off of Youtubes API, which go back about 1 year from now. Which is pretty much almost exactly what i was looking for.
(18 months would have been better, but this is good enough to accomplish what i wanted)

I spent most of yesterday cleaning some workbench space and getting my loading press mounted and trued up, dies adjusted, primer tubes loaded, etc, etc., in the hopes of cranking out a few cases of 9mm ammo.
This morning, I load 200 rounds, and the goddamned index spring breaks. Press is out of commission, and the replacement spring won’t arrive for a week.
I wish I’d just stayed in bed…

Seriously, Forster makes nice stuff (I have some of their dies) but I shoot an average of 1500 rounds of 9mm every month. I’m not gonna try to do that on a single stage press.
I can make 1500 9’s in half a day with mine. The press is exponentially easier to use and far more consistent than any other press. give one a try…you will see. It is a thing of beauty. I have tried them all and Forster is the shit.

A NEW teaching aid that recommends schoolchildren as young as seven “write a letter to a terrorist” to help understand their motives has been condemned as “dangerous and misguided”.
The book, Talking About Terrorism, published weeks before the Manchester Arena atrocity, describes the indiscriminate mass murder of innocent members of the public as a “type of war”.
It tells primary age children that terrorists kill people because they believe they are being treated “unfairly and not shown respect”.

“Today many people think of them as brave women and admire their struggle for the right to vote.”
In an activity recommended for pupils aged seven to 11, teachers are urged to “invite children to write a letter to a terrorist. If they could ask a terrorist six questions, what would they be?”
The book, published by Brilliant Publications and containing a foreword by Peter Wanless, the chief executive of the NSPCC, has been slammed by critics who say it is potentially dangerous.
Chris McGovern, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said the letter task would confuse and potentially upset pupils.

In May 1942 the Japanese began transferring POWs by sea. Similar to treatment on the Bataan Death March, prisoners were often crammed into cargo holds with little air, food or water for journeys that would last weeks. Many died due to asphyxia, starvation or dysentery. Some POWs became delirious and unresponsive in their environment of heat, humidity and lack of oxygen, food, and water. These unmarked prisoner transports were targeted as enemy ships by Allied submarines and aircraft.
More than 20,000 Allied POWs died at sea when the transport ships carrying them were attacked by Allied submarines and aircraft. Although Allied headquarters often knew of the presence of POWs through radio interception and code breaking, the ships were sunk because interdiction of critical strategic materials was more important than the deaths of prisoners-of-war,[3] and because Allied leaders feared that a pattern of sparing POW ships might lead the Japanese to abuse prisoners as human shields on valuable targets.

While I’m on the subject of Japan, during the the naval battle with the Russians at Tsushima in 1904, one reason the Russian losses were so high was that the Japanese continued to fire even after the Russians signaled surrender- first with nautical flags, then with a white flags. The Japanese flag code books did not contain an entry for “surrender” and they were not familiar with the meaning of the white flag.

I did read that. I liked it. The gist was the Japanese didn’t see any much difference between what the US did to the Indians vs what they were doing in China.
Another reason the Japanese were so cruel was they treated their own soldiers like hot garbage.
I read an article the other day about one of the rare times in WW2 where a large number of Japanese surrendered. They were a communications platoon so they knew that Japan was losing the war and about all the atrocities. They told the Americans that thought it would be better if Japan lost the war and became a republic.

More specifically, “Issen Gorin” translates to “one sen, five rin”, the cost of mailing a draft notice postcard (less than an American penny). The name Issen Gorin was the name Japanese Officers and powerful military personnel used to refer to the average Japanese soldier. Meaning that the individuals responsible for the wellbeing of the Japanese soldiers viewed the soldiers as being worth less than a penny. In their abusive training and continued treatment during World War II, the Japanese soldiers were constantly reminded by their superiors that they are nothing but worthless Issen Gorin.

Another book on Japan that I absolutely love is James Clavelle’s Shogun. I have read it a half dozen times. I know it fiction, but I think it paints an accurate picture of the attitudes of Feudal Japanese. It helped me to understand how building the Imperial Japanese society was possible.
