Thursday Morning Links

Well the Astros are leading 5-4 (Update: 6-4, now 7-4, now 8-4…now 10-4! Early morning edit: they won!) as I type this. I have to hope they win (again) but I don’t think I’ll be awake for the finale. I’ve got to get up and on the road…about an hour before this goes up. Headed to DFW to look at a couple of dozers and a bunch of trucks.  Let’s hope they’re all they were made out to be. Dodgers and D-backs yet to start and Wimbledon continues to be uneventful.

It’s art and sports, dammit! ESPN wouldn’t lie.

Either way, I think we can all agree that we miss hockey. (Look to the right!)

Anyway…um…yeah…let’s get…um…on to…the links!

Nothing to see here! Move along. Move along. I said move along, sir!

Lindsay Lohan wants people to stop bullying the biggest shitposter in the whole fucking world. Now that’s funny!

Amanda Marcotte still has the stick up her ass. The title has “bigotry” in it, but I have yet to be shown how the WWF (I’ll never call it the WWE, so suck it!) Trump-CNN meme is bigoted. Against who, reporters? (TW!!!!!! Not only is it Salon, its Marcotte! You have been duly warned. Enter at your own risk.)

I never got into the show, but apparently the BBC might make the next Dr. Who a woman. Supposedly that’s a really big deal. I wouldn’t know. I just want them to bring back Basil Fawlty, et al.

Sorry, sir. You’ll have to s(h)it somewhere else.

Anaheim has no heart. Those aren’t just benches! They’re also cots and shitters and…well, more than I would care to dwell on.  Let’s see when the backlash starts on this one.

You know your city is a shithole when the goddamn FIREFIGHTERS are complaining that you got them the wrong body armor because what you bought isn’t very good against stabbings.  The firefighters. And their body armor.  Sweet Jesus.

Happy Birthday, Banjos. (See featured image)

Go out there and make it a great day, friends!

“It pains us to have to remove bus benches,” Lyster said. “We know many people use them to get to and from work,

How do you use a bench to go somewhere?

Also, would not sit on those benches.

  2. Is this a new record early weekday links?

    1. ChipsnSalsa

Probably, I came to look over last nights links. Stumbled onto a first.

I think they are trying to make up for the as of late tardy links.

      1. With the exception of Monday, I thought my links were always in before 7 AM.

        1. ChipsnSalsa

All you link providers look the same to me.

          1. The Elite Elite

            LINKPHOBE!

        2. MikeS

I wouldn’t say “always before 7am.” But I’d give you “always before 7:15am.”

  3. As for the BBC, it’s time for them to shut it down. They’re long past their heyday, braodcasting isn’t a government function in the first place, and the draconian measures used to collect the “Television License” are beyond what gets used for other taxes in the western world.

That’s even before we get into the rot that’s overtaken the institution…

    1. KibbledKristen

When my college friend moved to England, she did not get a TV because she refused to pay that ridiculous license. She had an actual inspector come to her house to make sure she was secretly watching Eastenders on some bootleg smuggled street TV. How many licenses did they have to sell to pay for an inspector to visit an individual’s house? Seems efficient.

      1. Rufus the Monocled

Sounds like England is socialism by other means now but no one wants to admit it.

I have no idea what’s going on there but I don’t like the smell of it.

        1. egould310

          Yeah. ?

          1. BakedPenguin

            Second.

      2. Spartan Dad

The Brits also employ teams in specially equipped vans that drive around trying to figure out who might be watching tv without paying the tax. They’ve lost their minds.

      3. robc

How are they dealing with tablets/computers/netflix/etc?

        1. KibbledKristen

The license is to pay for the BBC, so Netflix isn’t part of that. To watch BBC on tablets, you need to download the app and enter your license info to activate it.

          1. ChipsnSalsa

            My mind is blown.

There is no end to this garbage. Just keep piling on the layers, and never examine whether it should be done.

          2. KibbledKristen

I guess you could at least say it’s a user fee and not a tax on everyone, regardless of whether they watch BBC. But de-coupling the BBC from govt altogether would be best. They’re now competing with satellite and internet. But government institutions have never had to compete in the open market.

  4. You know your city is a shithole when the goddamn FIREFIGHTERS are complaining that you got them the wrong body armor because what you bought isn’t very good against stabbings. The firefighters. And their body armor. Sweet Jesus.

Detroit has money to not only pay firefighters but armored firefighters?

    1. FreeSociety

Detroit is the city of the future. It’s a glimpse of tomorrow. And I mean that.

      1. Agent Cooper

I’D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!!!

        1. FreeSociety

I’d sell it to you for that and laugh my way to the convenience store to buy gum.

    2. Bobarian LMD

They don’t actually pay them, they just allow them to loot, which is why they need good body-armor.

  5. ChipsnSalsa

Well I’ll just make a mess of this thread.

Lindsay Lohan, voice of reason. Let the apocalypse come soon and with great destruction!

    1. Password gl1b

Is it possible she’s being the voice of reason because that’s the craziest thing possible? Or maybe Trump helped her realize that when you’re famous, you can grab attention by the pussy and it just lets you do it?

  6. ChipsnSalsa

Amanda Marcotte still has the stick up her ass. The title has “bigotry” in it, but I have yet to be shown how the WWF (I’ll never call it the WWE, so suck it!) Trump-CNN meme is bigoted. The fourth estate shall not be mocked. It’s in the constitution, look it up.

  7. ChipsnSalsa

    Happy birthday Banjos!

Sloopy taking care of the kids then?

    1. Banjos

Nah, they’re at the babysitters. He’s driving to Dallas to look at some equipment for a deal he’s working on, I’m at work.

  8. Count Potato

“Lindsay Lohan wants people to stop bullying the biggest shitposter in the whole fucking world. Now that’s funny!”

I saw that on the Daily Mail the other day. I was going to post “Famous Muslim Supports Trump”. Then a few clicks later I found out she really isn’t one.

Anyway, as crazy as she is, Lohan is Marie Curie, Ayn Rand, and Virginia Woolf rolled into one, compared to Amanda Marcotte.

    1. FreeSociety

Marcotte is one of those women who deserve to get some real gender equality, good and hard.

  9. Yeah, well, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.

    Cannabis Access and Academic Performance

We find that the academic performance of students who are no longer legally permitted to buy cannabis substantially increases. Grade improvements are driven by younger students and the effects are stronger for women and low performers. In line with how cannabis consumption affects cognitive functioning, we find that performance gains are larger for courses that require more numerical/mathematical skills. Our investigation of underlying channels using course evaluations suggests that performance gains are driven by an improved understanding of the material rather than changes in students’ study effort.

  11. German soldiers banned from wearing uniforms during G20 summit amid attack fears

Germany’s Defense Ministry has reportedly warned armed forces deployed in Hamburg area of possible attacks from ‘violent left-wing extremist protesters,’ ordering a ban on military uniforms outside the barracks during the G20 summit.

“Soldiers in uniform who are moving around the city during the announced protests could be the target of spontaneous attacks by violent left-wing extremist protesters,” Spiegel Online cited an internal memo from the defense ministry as saying. It is reported that the order followed the military counterintelligence service’s (MAD) findings on G20 protests.

In order to avoid attacks, soldiers have been ordered to appear in civilian dress in the host city from July 5 to 9, while meetings are taking place.

    1. Pat

I wonder what they’d do in the event of, you know, an actual fucking war.

      1. Collapse like wet cardboard.

      2. Floridaman

Ask those meanie Americans to take care of it.

        1. WTF

Pretty much. Look how they got the vapors when Trump mildly suggested that we might not be so enthusiastic about defending them if they didn’t start pulling their weight.

          1. Bobarian LMD

Used to be, that the German Army had a small but very competent corps of professional soldiers. They also have pretty good equipment.

            But german society? Yeah…

          2. From what I saw in Afghanistan – that is over with.

When the Wall fell, so did the Bundeswehr.

        2. Rufus the Monocled

Oh, don’t you worry. They’r on track to do exactly that. And America will have to clean it up and the Europeans will then not pay them back.

          Circle of life.

          1. WTF

Not only not pay it back but then bitch about how awful the Americans are.

          2. Pomp

            American cowboys.

    2. WTF

      2. I’m Bavarian. I agree that the rest of Germany has no sense of humor.

          1. mexican sharpshooter

Yeah, WW1 hit them particularly hard, leaving them with a small pool for conscription in WW2.

          2. BakedPenguin

UCS, MS, good points. Also, while the WWII performance of the French Army left a lot to be desired, it was mainly a failure from the top – leadership who didn’t recognize the new type of warfare the Krauts had just done in Poland, and who thought tanks couldn’t get through the Ardenne forest, etc.. Le paysans who defended Dunkirk to let a lot of pommies (and a lot of their own) to escape showed some balls.

        2. Count Potato

“Diane, Sandy Koufax just smacked me in the head.”

    4. Drake

Ironic – saw lots of Polish soldiers in uniform at Trump’s speech today. They seemed pretty proud. Talk about two countries headed in opposite directions.

      1. Floridaman

Perhaps the military spirit really was in Prussia, which explains why the Poles now have it.

        1. Jefe Hayek

But it doesn’t explain why it still takes so many dang Poles to screw in a light bulb

      2. Los Doyers

Poland is also the only NATO country other than the US that pulls its own weight, with 2.01% of its GDP going towards defense. The original NATO agreement states that at least 2% of your GDP has to be devoted to defense.

        1. Drake

Maybe having your country partitioned multiple times over the past few centuries makes you kind of… defensive?

        2. My guys that are still in – they tell me the Poles are convinced Ivan is coming again. They are going to fight this time – and they will help the Balts too.

          1. WTF

There’s no way the Russians try to invade Poland. The Russians have a force of about 500K mostly poorly-motivated conscripts with less than state-of-the-art equipment. The Poles have a force of about 300K well-trained, well-equipped, and highly-motivated people, as well as the backing of NATO. So the Russians would run into a force defending their own home without having a significant numerical advantage while the Poles would enjoy NATO air superiority and reinforcements. The Russians would get ground up like hamburger, and they know it.

          2. Drake

Not to mention that such an adventure would leave them wide open to a massive nut-shot from the Turks and/or the ChiComms.

    5. Chipwooder

Reminds me of when I was a freshman doing ROTC way back in 1994 when there were constant protests on campus about lifting the ban on gays. We were ordered not to wear our uniforms around campus and not to talk to reporters. We had to bring our uniforms in a bag and get dressed at the ROTC building.

      1. WTF

The left has always been so tolerant.

      2. mexican sharpshooter

Don’t worry, when I was in ROTC ten years later, they pretty much acted the same way.

  12. Oh Guardian, never stop being you:

    Are witches the ultimate feminists?

Sollee’s book positions itself as a whirlwind history of the witch in America and her shared history with sexually liberated women and radical liberationary politics. It’s a bite-sized grimoire than spans centuries, name-checking mythological menaces like Hecate, the Greek goddess of witchcraft, alongside historical heroines such as Joan of Arc and modern-day figures such as Malala Yousafzai. There’s also plenty of space for midwives, satanists, sex workers and the wise brujas holding court at local botánicas. Sollee guides the reader through centuries of mania, magic and malice. She also unreservedly dives into the thornier political issues of intersectionality, sex workers’ rights and the unique oppression faced by witches of color.

In the chapter Hex Sells: Feminist, Capitalism, and the Witch, Sollee sojourns to a vast Urban Outfitters in southern California, counting up black lace shawls and artisan smudge sticks while navigating the complexities of appropriation and its functionality as a gateway for would-be witches. “There will always be capitalist appropriation of identities and movements that were once relegated to the fringes. I believe the first line of defense is raising awareness about where these symbols originated from, and why they ring hollow when co-opted for corporate gain,” Sollee says.

    1. SugarFree

counting up black lace shawls and artisan smudge sticks while navigating the complexities of appropriation and its functionality as a gateway for would-be witches.

“No, Donnie, it’s okay, they’re goths, they’re harmless.”

      1. Scruffy Nerfherder

That just screams “LOOK AT ME, I’M RETARDED”

    2. Count Potato

“sex workers’ rights and the unique oppression faced by witches of color”

You can’t fool me. This was written with one of those word generators.

    3. Rasilio

I wonder if she realizes that witchcraft was invented by a man and only goes back to the 1940’s, with come claiming an earlier origin of the 1920’s although it was clearly Gardner who created and spread what we now call witchcraft.

Further I hate to break it to them but before becoming infected by feminism in the 70’s witchcraft required both the male and the female and worshiped “The Lord” and “The Lady” equally. Claims of practitioners of anything resembling witchcraft going back past that are complete garbage and all of the nature based pagan religions in the Western and Middle Eastern world were exterminated by around the 12th century and outside of the Druids of the Celtic lands (who were all males) and the Norse traditions (also, generally run by men but surprisingly the Norse were more meritocratic than most are aware of and it was not unheard of for a woman to rise to positions of great power) we don’t have the slightest clue what the religious practices of those earlier people were

    4. leonadasiv

“liberated women and radical liberationary politics”

This is the “not paying for my abortion is oppression” liberties. These people wouldn’t get liberty if it hit them over the head.

  13. MikeS

Jeh Johnson, who served as homeland security secretary under President Obama, told the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence last month that his department offered to assist the DNC during the campaign to determine what was happening, but Mr. Johnson said he was rebuffed.

“The DNC,” Mr. Johnson said at the time, “did not feel it needed DHS’ assistance at that time. I was anxious to know whether or not our folks were in there, and the response I got was the FBI had spoken to them, they don’t want our help, they have CrowdStrike.”

So the DNC insists there is nothing to hide and that CrowdStrike took care of everything. That must mean that the official Democratic Party platform will state that private business is better than government for providing services. amirite?

    1. ChipsnSalsa

      nice point.

When you are trying to cover your ass, yes private is better.

      also

better for me, not for thee.

    2. Pat

They’re the party of hip, cool, bay area millennials. They know everything about IT security. Just ask these guys.

      1. MikeS

That whole story is crazy. It would be so great to see Wassermann-Schultz and the others go down for this. Not holding my breath.

        1. Bobarian LMD

I don’t know why anyone would want to see DWS go down, you pervert!

      2. leonadasiv

What v probably happens is those aides were hired to do something illegal and got some insurance on the way. I love how Donald was obstructing Justice when he fired Comey, but Shultz was A-OK when she threatened the Capitol police chief over the investigation.

    3. westernsloper

That must mean that the official Democratic Party platform will state that private business is better than government for providing services. amirite?

Great point. I have read two articles this morning on the 50th anniversary (yesterday) of FOIA. Maybe that is why they don’t want it in gov hands. Opens it to foia lawsuits. Although, if we are claiming that the supposed hacking of said dnc server was an, “attack on our electoral process”, maybe it should be open to foia anyway.

I also appreciated both articles, by the same author, glossed over the worst track record for foia of any administration since the law was passed…….aka the Obama administration. but Trump being in office for six months is the end of government transparency. Trump does suck there on a few things (WH visitor logs…etc) so far, but focusing on six months while glossing over Obama’s eight years of abuse kind of irritates me.

Here was one of the articles

  14. Libby

Hey glibs! Hope you all are having a great morning. For my long drive to Lake George this weekend, I’m looking for some good libertarian podcasts. Any recommendations?

    1. I thought “podcasts” died out.

      1. Libby

I’m behind the times I guess. Maybe just a Henry Hazlitt audio book will do.

    2. Not libertarian but I routinely listen to:

      True Crime Garage
      Casefile
      Embedded
      Breakdown

      All True Crime stuff.

      1. Libby

        Thanks! Those sound good!

        1. Casefile has a good Aussie accent. True Crime Garage are two guys drinking beer and discussing famous cases. Embedded isn’t really true crime, but it’s reporters actually, uh, embedding themselves in a real situation. Like staying all day in a drug house, or covering shootings by police. Breakdown concentrates on one specific case a season.

    3. Password gl1b

Not explicitly libertarian, but Jordan B Peterson is always worth listening to.

      1. Libby

        Thanks! Ill check it out.

    4. Pope Jimbo

Not libertarian by a long shot, but most of them are very funny.

The Dollop (http://thedollop.libsyn.com/the-rube) The one on Rube Waddell that I linked to is fucking great

Sort of libertarianish is Penn’s Sunday School

    5. Trials and Trippelations

      I’ve enjoyed Jason Stapleton

    6. TripodKat

Not libertarian, but if you like videogames, check out the “Giant Bombcast”. A bunch of old-heads that have been in the industry for decades.

      1. Los Doyers

        NERD

        1. TripodKat

          Yes.

    7. Private Chipperbot

Not libertarian really, but love Hardcore History. The free stuff should give you 30-40 hours of listening.

      1. Chipwooder

Yessir….I’m nearing the conclusion of Blueprint to Armageddon. I’m not a big podcast guy but, as a history buff who really didn’t know much about the Great War, I’ve loved it.

      2. robc

42 thumbs up to this suggestion.

The Persian series and the Wrath of the Khans series were probably my favorites.

    8. Chafed

The Fifth Column is libertarianish. Reason has podcasts. I know, I know we are all here after the Great Exodus. There are some very good interviews among their podcasts.

    9. ArchieBunker

Tom woods is great. Free talk live used to be semi decent but haven’t listened in years (got repetitive). My fav all time is liberty conspiracy.com. there are no new ones, he quit doing them forever ago, but he’s great. I always felt like my IQ jumped a few points after listening to him. But again, there aren’t new ones. But hes supposed to start doing them again.

    10. Libby

Thanks for all the recs! Should be a fun road trip now.

    11. FreeSociety

The Tom Woods Show, Stefan Molyneux, Styxhexanhammer, Mises Weekends, and Gavin McInnes (outside of Rebel Media) has some great interviews.

    12. The Last American Hero

      Econtalk.

      1. robc

        dammit.

    13. robc

      econtalk

    14. Agent Cooper

Also — How Did This Get Made? with Paul Scheer and Jason Mantzoukas is funny. The live shows are better than the in-studio ones.

    15. Seguin

Not libertarian but I really like the Eastern Border.

      1. Number.6

A bunch of really short “middle school level” explainers by Madsen Pirie, titled “Economics is fun”.

    1. The Elite Elite

For a “plus-sized” model she looks good. I was expecting a landwhale like that Holiday woman when I saw the words “plus-sized” as the page was loading.

      1. Here’s something more to your liking.

        1. The Elite Elite

Yeah, there’s one of those landwhale I was talking about. *barf*

        2. Pat

I mean, she should probably be more ashamed of snooping on the private text messages of some random guy who was sitting next to her than being a gluttonous butterball.

I was in Walmart a couple weeks ago and was talking to someone on the phone as I was cramming my way through the impenetrable wall of obese old fucks in their complementary motorized scooters parked in front of every goddamn thing on my shopping list. In frustration I blurted out, in a voice that was apparently loud enough to be heard by quite a few very offended people, something along the lines of “Every fucking person in this store is at least 400 pounds and I’m the one with high cholesterol.” THAT is how you fat-same someone.

          1. Pat

            (fat-shame, not fat-same. don’t grammar-shame me)

          2. Bobarian LMD

I thought you were saying that you couldn’t get your scooter around their scooters.

          3. *opera applause*

  15. Pope Jimbo

Now that we can buy booze on Sunday in Minnesoda, maybe there is hope to be able to buy a car too?

Not so fast says local constitutional lawyer who has defeated such silliness in the past.

Cars and booze are completely different.

Allowing Sunday transactions would, many in the industry feel, create a big commercial advantage for large multifacility dealerships in the Twin Cities to the detriment of smaller, mainly family-owned enterprises in Greater Minnesota, whose customer base could be more easily lured to the metropolitan area to shop for cars on that day, a characteristic generally not present in the off-sale liquor business.

Basically a bunch of hand waving about how booze and cars are not the same and it is fine and dandy for the govt to stop you from being able to buy a car on Sunday. Basically it breaks down into the same thing: car dealerships want to save money by closing on Sunday. If their competitors are allowed to stay open, then they all have to stay open.

    1. Pat

For the love of christ man, if they can buy liquor and cars on the same day it will be a wanton orgy of drunken vehicular homicide.

Solution: let them buy cars on Sunday, but with a 3 day waiting period.

    2. ChipsnSalsa

I think some / many of the dealerships would stay closed on Sunday or a lot of that day. Plenty of people go through lots on Sundays looking at cars without being hassled by a salesmen.

      1. spqr2008

In my area (Columbus) there’s a dealership that literally advertises “Closed Sundays to be with our families, because it’s the right thing to do.”

        1. TripodKat

Surprisingly, I think this is going to become a good marketing tactic. In my area, a lot of retail businesses now close for most holidays and proudly state it – “because our employees deserve to see their families too!” I actually don’t shop on holidays because I hated having to work that shift when I was in retail.

People like it when businesses do this kind of signaling, and I’m okay with that. Fuck the Minnesota government from forcing it on people though.

          1. Pope Jimbo

Back in the day, I loved working on holidays because it was time and a half (or double time) and a lot of times it was pretty slow. I never had to work retail on a Black Friday. (although working at a restaurant on Mother’s Day had to be just as bad).

          2. Fourth of July at the helpdesk was the easiest time and a half I ever earned. We were open because there might be Canukistani callers – but the volume was exactly nil.

Trump’s CNN Tweet Evoked The Nazis

This week, on my return to Washington, I was greeted by the sight of a presidential tweet featuring our nation’s leader violently stomping on a man lying defenseless on the floor. The label CNN was superimposed on him. The short video gave the appearance of the righteous kicking the life out of an entity that deserved no sympathy, and bore little semblance to humanity.

For me, and perhaps for millions of others, the image was reminiscent of the ones emblazoned in my consciousness of Nazi stormtroopers kicking helpless Jews forced to wear the Yellow Star of David.

Of course, it’s not the same spirit of anti-Semitism that pervades in this animated tweet. But it is a spirit rife with overtones of turning a blind eye to violence, and encouraging its reemergence — however inadvertently — by being oblivious to the consequences of the image of a president stomping a limp and seemingly defenseless news network.

    1. Scruffy Nerfherder

You know who else evoked the Nazis?

      1. Floridaman

    2. Floridaman

Of course who can forget the twitter campaign of the Second World War, and the atrocities of the Memeing branch of the S.S. So many dank memes.

**the great edit fairy has answered your wish, kind Florida Man, and corrected your typo.**

      1. Floridaman

Oh great edit fairy, can you please fix this Secon should be Second.

        1. Pat

It’s plenty clear from the context anyway. Don’t worry, Trump didn’t evoke the grammar Nazis…

    3. WTF

So, if Trump is Hitler, then Hitler was no worse than Trump. I didn’t realize there were so many Holocaust deniers on the left.

Cincy switching their AAA team to Louisville has been a huge help to the players. If a pitcher gets a “we are calling you up for an emergency start and sending you right back down” call, they know they can still be sleeping in their bed back in Louisville after the game.

Why white people can’t dance: they’re traumatized

    http://selfishactivist.com/why-white-people-cant-dance-theyre-traumatized/

“This left me with a profoundly different understanding of race and its relationship to the body. And it has brought me to this conclusion 9 years later: White people ‘can’t dance’ because white-ness is a traumatized state that is disconnected from the body. That’s what the aforementioned phrase really means.

As I deepened my understanding of trauma and anatomy, I began to see that white-ness is much more than a colour of skin or a culture – it’s a type of embodiment that holds a certain set of ideas and attitudes. And I saw this first hand by watching myself and my white peers heal by learning to dance.

    ….

The major muscle in our body that holds trauma is our iliopsoas which connects our spine to our pelvis. It is the muscle responsible for engaging us in our stress reactions of fight, flight and freeze. Trauma locks up the use of this muscle, which in turn reduces the range of movement of the spine. Westernized/colonized life reinforces trauma to produce a rigid, reactive and disassociated embodiment -what we call white-ness.
How I understand white-ness now is that it is an energetic imbalance caused by a loss of spinal fluidity and awareness of the lower body. Emotional energy becomes concentrated in the upper body, particularly gathering in the mind. To live in a world dominated by white-ness is to live in an environment that denies and protects white-ness as embodied trauma.”

    Ok this is kinda funny

    1. Haybob

Please tell me this is sattire.

Muslim Slam Poet: ‘If You Need Me To Prove My Humanity, I’m Not The One Who’s Not Human’

Dimpleplasty Is the New Plastic Surgery Trend Among Millennials

The treatment, known as dimpleplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure used to create dimples in the face, most commonly within the cheeks, says Wright Jones, a double-board-certified plastic surgeon based in Atlanta. And over the last few years, it’s become a common request — almost tripling — among millennial-aged patients due to its “little downtime, enhancement of facial aesthetics, and lack of need for general anesthesia,” says Jones.

Millennials are the worst. At least when our parents shelled out for plastic surgery they spent the money on something useful, like fake tits.

Uffda. This is going to be quite the deal.

Enbridge – big pipeline company – wants to replace aging pipeline with new one along a route that already has legal right of way. Minnesoda indians swear they are going to show those NoDak indians what a real protest looks like.

There are similarities between the Enbridge proposal and the Dakota Access line in North Dakota. They both travel very near current Indian reservations, and in both cases potential spills could do significant harm to important natural resources.

The Dakota Access line travels underneath the Missouri River, from which the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe draws its drinking water. Line 3 would travel through the ancestral land of several Ojibwe tribes, where they hunt, fish and most importantly gather wild rice, a central part of traditional diet and culture.

Those ancestral lands are now either privately held or are owned by the state of Minnesoda (or maybe Feds too). They aren’t reservation lands.

I think that the way to deal with this is for Minnesoda to tell the tribes that if they want to protest go ahead, but to help pay for all the extra costs those protests will cause, they will license casinos in Moorhead and Minneapolis/St. Paul and use the license fees and taxes from them to pay for the extra environmental studies.

I gay-ron-tee that the tribes would instantly shut up. They can buy a lot of wild rice in the stores with the money they make with their state monopoly on gaming.

    1. Scruffy Nerfherder

It’s purely a gamble for a payoff. The local tribes here protested a Dominion Power high-tension line (nowhere near their reservation) until Dominion paid up.

    2. Drake

Wouldn’t replacing an aging pipeline with a new one make a potential spill less likely? Why would they protest that (other than the obvious reasons: looking for more hand-outs, virtue signalling, unemployed and nothing better to do…).

    3. MikeS

Hopefully the shit doesn’t hit the fan, but if it does it will be interesting to see if Governor Mumbles puts out an EMAC request to NoDak after giving us the finger when we did it.

      1. Pope Jimbo

Fuck Gov. Mumbles is a petty man. I hadn’t heard about that shit.

Of course, he is the reason my idea of holding casino licenses over the heads of the tribes will never work. Fuck he will be out there protesting with the yahoos.

        1. MikeS

Yeah, he is something else. Like you say, he won’t make an EMAC request because he’ll be egging the protestors on.

Assuming he lives long enough, when does his term in office end? Do you have a term limit on the Governorship in Minn?

          1. Tundra

Four years. Up next year, I think (and hope). No term limits, unfortunately.

    4. Suthenboy

Of course they would shut up. These protests are always about money.

          Huh. Interesting:

In 1980, the government of Canada helped six Americans escape from Iran when students stormed the US embassy, precipitating the Iran Hostage Crisis. Shelley, then eight years old, wrote a letter of thanks to Canada. The letter was later transcribed and released as a single by Mercury Records in March 1980, under the title “(This Is My Country) Thank You, Canada”. The brief (1:26) spoken-word record received some airplay and made Cashbox’s Top 100 (two weeks at #99) and Billboard Magazine’s “Bubbling Under The Hot 100” chart nationally, peaking at #109. (Ironically, Looney would later score the game-winning goal against the Canadians in the 1998 Olympics gold-medal game.)

        3. Pat

My fault there. I just looked up the game on wiki and assumed that the last goal scored was the winning one. If I’d bothered to do the math I could have seen USA was already up 2-1.

At least 10 measurable temblors hit Montana from 12:30 to 1:31 a.m. Thursday, with the last two having magnitudes of 3.9 and 4.4, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake’s epicenter was some 230 miles from Yellowstone National Park — and because it was felt from far away, the shaking led some in the area to wonder whether the Yellowstone supervolcano was finally emerging from its slumber. But the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory’s most recent volcano alert level is listed as normal, and the park service has said that while the area normally has more than 1,000 earthquakes each year, its experts predict a large eruption “very unlikely” to strike in the next 1,000 -10,000 years.

More details about the overnight quake from the USGS:

“The location and focal mechanism solution of this earthquake are consistent with right-lateral faulting in association with faults of the Lewis and Clark line, a prominent zone of strike-slip, dip slip and oblique slip faulting trending east-southeast from northern Idaho to east of Helena, Montana, southeast of this earthquake.”

I slept right through it. Yellowstone has been having a lot of activity, lately.

  30. Pope Jimbo

The evil GOP is going to take Minnesoda’s free money away and kill the poor and disabled

If the GOP health plans go through, the DFL (our local Dems) claim that Minnesoda would lose about $2B for medical assistance programs in the first 18 months and it would skyrocket from there.

“People need to raise their voices about the dangers of the House and Senate bills as if their lives depended on it,” Ellison said. “Some people’s lives do depend on it.

The flip side to people thinking that rich folk have money bins like Scrooge McDuck that they like to swim around in, is the idea that that money that the Feds dole out is picked from the money trees that grow along the Potomac. As I point out nearly daily to the jackasses in my local paper – not a single dime needs to get lost and not a single person’s coverage has to change, if the good citizens of _____________ want to maintain the funding, they can raise taxes locally. But it’s hard to raise taxes locally and easy to charge it on Uncle Sam’s credit card.

Watch the house of cards teeter and wobble before the total collapse:

Tesla Inc. deliveries are flatlining amid persistent production snafus, reinforcing concern that Elon Musk may again be setting targets that his electric-car company won’t hit on time.

The maker of Model S sedans and Model X sport utility vehicles has reported quarter-by-quarter shipment declines for the second time in the past year. In addition to stoking fear about whether demand has peaked, these figures cast doubt on whether Musk can pull off a steep production ramp for his most ambitious offering yet, the cheaper Model 3 sedan.

    1. TripodKat

I recently had a conversation with a new co-worker in accounting about Teslas. He mentioned that “yeah, those cars are cool, no emissions what-so-ever, very clean, I want one.”

I responded “well, the emissions are just somewhere else, at the electricity generation plant, far away from you, so you don’t have to think about them.”

His jaw almost dropped. It was hilarious.

I’ve been looking at Hybrids, and my parents and brother give me shit about it because they actually know facts about the environment, and know that A) I’d be replacing the battery within 10 years, therefore, bad for the environment, and make sure I get a car with a battery warranty if I get a hybird, and B) rare earth metal mining is ridiculously environmentally unfriendly, and I shouldn’t buy a hybrid due to that.

          7. You listed two of the reasons I bought a hybrid.

        Him – *jawdrop* “You’re a racist”

Him – “Can you even hear yourself? The policewoman was black.”

Me – “Culture isnt race you idiot. I still dont know which one it was. Let me guess, you think it was a white NRA member.”

Him – “Of course it was, thats why the press is covering for him”

Turns out it was Rastus. I cant wait to see the guy again and see what he has to say. Ten bucks says he avoids the subject.
I am going to try and point out to him that the BLM movement was never about race, but I doubt he will be able to grasp that. He thinks the press has a right wing bias so I am thinking every sunrise is a surprise to him.

  32. The Late P Brooks

    Stupid voters

Did Democrats ignore — or worse, condescend to — white working-class voters in 2016? Did many of these voters back Donald Trump because of his promises to restore economic growth for small towns and in manufacturing and mining — or because they resented rising prospects for minorities and women? Can these voters be returned to the Democratic fold with sharper economic messaging? Or does appealing to them require an unthinkable retreat on issues of social justice and inclusion?

    ——————

Far from condescending, Clinton’s campaign spoke truth to these voters: Our economic future is “Stronger Together.” America’s best hope to remain an economic superpower is an inclusive economy where immigrants start businesses and create jobs, where everyone can make meaningful contributions to an innovative economy and where the United States masters the economic opportunities that come from challenges such as climate change. That message may not have appealed to some working-class voters, but it isn’t condescension — it’s honesty.

How do we convince those dumb fucking hicks that we know what’s good for them, and they don’t? It’s like they’re just too dense to comprehend the truth.

    1. Scruffy Nerfherder

Bill threaded that needle back in the 90’s. He felt their pain while telling them to go get retrained for a new job and that the old jobs weren’t coming back.

Hillary just treated them like the hired help.

    2. american socialist

Economic opportunities for climate change? Wut?

    4. american socialist

Do refugees and illegals start a lot of biz?

Piling on regulations, min wage, welfare, licensing, taxation is a great way to make sure everyone can’t make meaningful contributions

      1. Rasilio

Refugees yeah, illegals not so much

      2. The Sleeper

Well, you see, if you can’t afford to pay your workers minimum wage and navigate the complex bureaucracy of licensing and permits and can’t afford to pay your taxes and pay a lawyer to make sure you don’t run afoul of one of a thousand regulations that may or may not pertain to your field, you shouldn’t even be in business. But the illegal immigrants and refugee imports totes can do all of that because they’re magic.

    5. leonadasiv

I’m not even mad about the characterization of Hillary’s campaign as being well run, because that’s just delusional. What pisses me off is the idea that trump won because all of these white people just can’t stand that immagrants have opportunity. It’s utterly slanderous and lazy. “My enemies are morally inferior to me” is one of the most infuriating arguments every.

Last I heard the show was filled with feminist BS in recent seasons (series?). If that’s not enough to drive people away from it, I don’t know what would.

      1. Juvenile Bluster

Not really. They made The Master a woman (and probably made the character better) and the female companions stopped being completely helpless. I’m not sure that qualifies as being “feminist BS”

        1. Count Potato

There were formidable companions (eg. Leela, Romana) before. Although the last companion announcing she’s a lesbian every episode got old fast.

          1. Juvenile Bluster

Yeah, didn’t like her much. Glad she was only around for the one season.

Will miss Nardole though. He was great.

      1. TripodKat

Eh, I was underwhelmed. I didn’t really see why everyone liked it so much.

      2. Rasilio

Tennant was good and Matt Smith was decent but his run was ruined by the writers decisions to shit all over the concept of coherency the new guy just sucks.

As far as them making the Dr a woman, it will be a horrible flop because the majority of the Dr Who fans these days are women who fantasize about him as the perfect boyfriend, as a woman the character is just going to come off a unlikable and snarky. It doesn’t help that the sole reason for gender swapping the character is to appease feminist and progressive sensibilities and that NEVER results in good storytelling.

        1. Not Adahn

I liked the first Amy Pond season, when they reframed the show to be more of a Fairy Tale.

Because Dr. Who isn’t now nor has ever been remotely sci-fi. It’s always been fantasy.

      3. John Titor

It’d help if 90% of the episodes weren’t so profoundly poorly written, and it seems to get worse every season. Also, the obvious agitprop they constantly insert.

Forget Kansas – North Carolina Is The National Model For Conservative Tax Reform

When Republicans took total control of the North Carolina government in 2010, the state had the highest personal and corporate income tax rates in the region, at 7.75% and 6.9%, respectively. Thanks to enactment of multiple rounds of tax relief, beginning with the landmark 2013 tax reform act, North Carolina will soon have a personal income tax rate that is 30% lower than what the top rate was only four years ago. The corporate rate, having been reduced by more than 63% since 2013, is now the lowest corporate income tax rate among states that impose such a tax.

North Carolina didn’t make the same mistake as Kansas. Since they began cutting taxes in 2013, North Carolina legislators have kept annual increases in state spending below the rate of population growth and inflation. As a result, at the same time North Carolina taxpayers have been allowed to keep billions more of their hard-earned income, the state has experienced repeated budget surpluses. As they did in 2015, North Carolina legislators are once again returning surplus dollars back to taxpayers with the personal and corporate income tax rate cuts included in the state’s new budget.

    Yes, but bathrooms and Kansas.

    2. The Zenome Project

As a North Carolinian, if you ever want to know why I’m more sympathetic to the GOP than others on this board, it’s probably because of the effectiveness of my own state’s GOP at balancing the budgets. It’s why they continue to hold supermajorities even when the low-info leftists screamed and virtue-signaled their way to Roy Cooper. Now that HB2 has died down I wouldn’t be surprised if the right takes back the Governor’s seat in 3 years.

      1. spqr2008

HB2 pissed off my mom enough that she voted for Cooper.

My father, who I love so very much but is politically the epitome of RINO/moderate, nearly did the same thing until he saw how the Cooper campaign pressured the City of Charlotte to not compromise with the Legislature to end HB2 for political gain. I wish other saw that and did the same, but that’s past history. Hopefully I and others will vote him out next time.

          1. spqr2008

It took some time for her to see that (she was very busy consulting to pay for my parent’s huge cruise this spring) and probably will not vote for him next time.

It’s an easy typo error. She went to write the sentence one way, thought better of it, and didn’t go back and read it over. But just like the html link errors in the first paragraph, it’s evidence of Mandy wanting to get her important hot take to the masses so badly that she can’t bother to have her work edited or even proofread it herself.

It’s her feverish intensity over an inconsequential issue that I disdain, and that deluded pomposity is the entire basis of her baffling career.

        1. Count Potato

I think people hire only because she generates clickbait that gets shared on right-wing sites. “Look at what this crazy libtard wrote!” I can’t believe anyone could honestly think that she is a good writer.

    Huh

More than a dozen automakers are jostling to lead the U.S. electric-car race, but Bloomberg New Energy Finance sees a clear winner separating from the pack: Tesla Inc.

The automaker led by Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk will emerge as “the stand-out” in total cumulative deliveries through 2021, reaching nearly 709,000 vehicles, according to BNEF’s Long-Term Electric Vehicle Outlook released Thursday. Tesla is projected to pull away from current leader General Motors Co., which may slip behind Volkswagen AG’s aggregate sales of plug-in hybrid and fully electric autos in four years’ time.

The report reinforces the optimism among some analysts that Tesla will be able to distance itself from established automakers and dominate many of the world’s biggest markets for battery-powered vehicles. Investors have bid the company’s shares up 53 percent this year in anticipation of Musk debuting the Model 3 sedan, a more affordable car he’s counting on to crack the mass market.

Tesla will sell a half million cars a year.

I promise I won’t come in your mouth.

Sweden Might Have a Women-Only Music Festival Because Men Can’t Stop Being Predators

Over the weekend, Bråvalla, Sweden’s biggest music festival, announced that it was canceling its 2018 edition in light of reports of several sexual assault and rape cases at this year’s festival, which took place from June 28 to July 1. A staggering 23 sexual assaults and four rapes were reported at Bråvalla, and last year, five rapes and 12 sexual assaults were reported, causing Mumford and Sons to boycott the festival. Festival organizers told The Guardian, “Certain men … apparently cannot behave. It’s a shame. We have therefore decided to cancel Bråvalla 2018.”

But after Swedish radio personality Emma Knyckare tweeted a very popular suggestion to have a music festivals only open to non-men “until all men have learned how to behave” (trust us, that’s what the above tweet says) it seems something clicked. Knyckare later posted on Instagram that “Sweden’s first man-free rock festival will see the light next summer,” promising to bring together a team of festival organizers.

And before anyone claims that it’s the wider definition of rape or methods in statistical recording, keep in mind that those definitions and methods were in place for many years and yet there has been a meteoric rise in the rates of rape since 2003, tracking closely with the sudden influx of third worlders over the last decade.

Why hasn’t he tweeted something about “Next Dr. Who is a woman? Now they have to rename it Nurse Who. Sad!”

Honestly, Trump is doing so well at trolling these saps that I worry he will start hitting the point of diminishing returns. Unless he can make their heads explode ala Scanners, can he really make them react any harder than he already has?

I’m conflicted about this. I think it’s great that another bad minimum wage law was squashed, but I also believe in “good and hard” politics.

    1. I wish I’d saved the link to the aricle about waiters and waitresses in Maine (I think) who successfully lobbied to get their minimum wage lowered to save their jobs.

      1. The Zenome Project

Amazing…I wonder what the gender ratio of that crowd was, since there’s allegedly “no such thing as female libertarians!”

      2. The Zenome Project

Also, it would be great if more Luddites could figure out that the biggest threat to employment isn’t AI, but minimum wage.

We’ll see if LA ever figures it out, I already know two local restaurants are cutting staff and hours back. So we’ll see how it spreads.

  48. Re Dr. Who: I actually have nothing to say, since I don’t think a sonic screwdriver joke would be at all tasteful or appropriate.

    1. Suthenboy

Tasteful or appropriate. You dont even read the comments here, do you?

Just when I thought the Baby Boomers couldn’t be more disgusting.

NK is an easy problem to fix. Give nukes to the Japanese and SKoreans. Cut off every penny going to China and tell them it will be restored when they pull their heads out of their asses – get rid of that fat little fuck and blow those phony islands back into the sea.

      1. KSuellington

We should pull out of the agreement with South Korea and tell them that we will not automatically defend them in case of attack. They are a highly developed, prosperous country that can pay for their own defense. South Koreand that I’ve talked with resent the US presence there.

Rumors swirling that Ross Ulbricht is dead.

Stand down – looks like they transferred him (and didn’t tell his family??)

He’s mid-transfer. “gone” not here, not gone shed this mortal coil.

Fuck you* whoever (JB?) prompted me to learn about the case of Justine Sacco. It’s put me in a very misanthropic mood. We’re essentially just fucking mobbish, tribalistic savages.
