What’s more, his security clearance was revoked, and then restored.
Why did Kang serve in the US Army for one minute after he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State? Because the US military is avid to have and feature Muslim soldiers, so that it can show that it is not “Islamophobic.” And this at the expense of security, as we have seen before with Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood jihad mass murderer, who continued to serve in the Army even after he frightened his coworkers with his talk of jihad, and contacted jihad mastermind Anwar al-Awlaki.

I was completely pissed off that he was not instantly pulled from patients, had his security clearance suspended until it was revoked and processed for “resignation in lieu of court martial.” His entire chain of command should have been relieved for cause and prosecuted for failing to perform their duties. The only surprise is that he did not shoot up Walter Reed vice Ft Hood.

A UBI remains a desirable prospect, if it is introduced in pursuit of the right objectives. But if any sort of basic income is to be instituted, it cannot be at the expense of other forms of governmental assistance; that would just perpetuate or worsen the status quo. Under current proposals, the UBI wouldn’t even cover a year’s healthcare and housing costs. Any UBI proposal must supplement improved versions of existing social services, including a robust single-payer healthcare system. Furthermore, we might consider a “progressive basic income” (PBI) instead, which does not pay all people the same amount, but pays them in proportion to their financial need, with the poorest receiving the most.
…
One shouldn’t underestimate the social harm done by tech capitalism. It’s a key contributor to the precariousness faced by workers across the economy. Ride- and home-sharing services like Uber and Airbnb employ and exploit “contractors” who, in a better economic environment for the working class, might not have chosen to open up their personal spaces to complete strangers. Companies like Facebook and Google own users’ data and can still sell it to advertisers, sometimes continuing to do so even after the user shuts down their account. It’s an industry that runs roughshod over municipal governments, avoids paying taxes, and is hostile to any attempt at unionizing its workplaces.

The American system of kidney donation is badly broken. Every year, 4,500 people die waiting for a transplant (that’s 30 a day), even though donating a kidney carries few negative health consequences. The tragedy of this situation has been widely remarked-upon, yet for decades it has persisted. Despite a number of proposed fixes, the number of unfortunate souls awaiting transplants now tops 100,000. Yet there may be one route out of the quandary that serves both kidney patients and justice alike: a universal mandatory nationwide lottery.

At the personal level, it is almost certainly morally indefensible for an individual not to donate his or her kidney. After all, a life is saved at relatively little cost to one’s self. But the gross selfishness of withholding one’s organs does not seem a sufficient motivator for people to voluntarily close the transplant gap. The govies could solve the organ shortage program quickly by allowing people to sell their kidneys and by permitting survivors to sell the deceased organs. Heck the government can incentivise it by making any income for organs to be tax free.
I revoked my donor box on my drivers license and informed the shocked clerk exactly why: everybody gets something of value from organ donation EXCEPT for the donor and their family. The doctors, nurses and hospitals get paid, the drug manufacturers sell anti-rejection drugs for decades, the recipient gets something of great value, and medical device manufacturers sell their products. Me, the donor, gets nothing. Of course I’m dead so I don’t care except that my family gets nothing. I have made it clear to my ex and kids not to donate my parts and to explain exactly why. Of course if they get a good value under the table, they should consider it.
