Thursday Afternoon Links

My house is like a plague pit. My kids have been sick for days, my wife is intermittantly ill, and here I am, gliding through on my 18 Constitution. Its funny how your kids can have the same genetic material and raising and be totally different. My older son acts like he’s literally dying when he gets sick, demanding to be carried around and generally making a fuss. The younger one just slows down and cries a little more. Until the medicine kicks in and knocks down his fever, then he’s immediately back to 90% speed.

Michael Ledeen says something interesting about misery and revolution.

Jesus F Christ. This WaPo jock-sniffer of an article about Nicolas Maduro is disgusting. On the other hand, they have full transcripts of Trump’s conversations with foreign leaders. Which I am glad to see in public. If only that happened more often.

This monster scarred hundreds of perfectly innocent women’s breasts. (Fixed because Just Say’n is a whiny little bitch-ass bitch.)

Those geniuses at Apple own $52B in US T-bills. No wonder the government is suddenly quiet on the tax reparation front.

Misery loves company.

  1. Why am I still at work? Oh right, shifted shift. 🙁

    1. At least tomorrow I’ll be back to normal and maybe even see the mourning lynx.

Don’t tease a bear. Another cute bear video.

Showing off the prowess of his people to puny humans in order to intimidate, educate and entertain.

        It’s working on me!

The rest of the animal kingdom really needs to step-up it’s self-promotional game.

  3. F. Stupidity Jr.

Certainly the citizens in those countries are miserable, but I don’t think that revolution is about to erupt in any of them.

I just had a great idea: what if we assembled a military coalition, went into Venezuela and liberated it? Can you imagine how grateful the people would be to have us usher in a new era of democratic rule? And we’d have access to all that sweet, tasty oil in return for our investment! What could possibly go wrong?

    1. No, no, not, we assemble a clandestine army of Venezuelan ex-pats to do the invading and chicken out with the air support.

    2. Florida Man

      Do you mean Glibertarians?

      *grabs rifle*

I want to be a colonel in this phony baloney army.

        RC Dean is the Colonel.

Fine, as long as I get a bunch of BS medals to pin to my uniform, I’m happy.

Sorry, Florida Men are strictly cannon fodder. We pump you and a couple hundred others full of meth and then throw you at the enemy line as an advanced force. Has great results, you wouldn’t believe how many machine gun bullets a methed up Floridan can take.

I thought we agreed that the preferred country name would be ‘Gliberia’. This is why we shouldn’t give breakfast foods the vote.

This is why we shouldn’t give breakfast foods the vote.

So that’s why I haven’t seen waffles since the great migration.

          2. SugarFree

UTC advocated relocation of the freed slaves to Africa. The freed slaves that did return founded Liberia. Charles Taylor was the President of Liberia.

From the Discord discussion, it seems clear that the best course of action is orbital kinetic bombardment. The Rods from God obviously fall under the Glibertarian right to bear arms.

        1. Behold!

It’s socialism. Do you really need to ask?

          1. commodious spittoon

Well, the commies have had it for under a couple decades… Which means they’ve probably inflicted a century worth of damage.

    7. BigT

Will there be raping and pillaging?

      Asking for a friend.

      1. Well, otherwise what’s the point?

    8. Let’s all be filibusters!

  4. Just Say’n

“Those geniuses at Apple own $52B in US T-bills.”

That’s a…that’s…an ‘interesting’ investment strategy. Or is it leverage?

    1. thom

So instead of repatriating that $52B and paying $20B in taxes on it, they use it to buy T-Bills and we pay them interest? Good deal if you can pull it off.

    2. Brasidas

T Bills are as good as cash.

  5. Florida Man

So I didn’t read in the article WHY Apple owns so much in T-bills. Shouldn’t that money be in R&D, advertising or investments with better returns? Weird.

    1. Just Say’n

      Time for a new CIO

    2. Apple doesn’t do R&D, they do design integration and branding.

This may have something to do with the gratuitous amount of cash on hand they have – they ran out of ideas for investing it.

    3. Brett L

They can’t repatriate it to their American parent company without paying something like 30% tax on it. So its parked in European subsidiaries, invested in all sorts of conservative, but income generating bonds and securities.

      1. thom

It’s cheaper to access that cash by borrowing against it than repatriating it. The press acts like Apple just has warehouses of money, but they maintain a healthy amount of debt.

    4. ChipsnSalsa

The treasury investment would have a different type of return.

      1. Florida Man

You mean a negative return or political clout?

        1. ChipsnSalsa

          clout I would think.

  6. bacon-magic

Is that the nurse from one flew over the cuckoo’s nest?

    1. Just Say’n

      Would

      1. bacon-magic

Not the redhead. I wood that one too. I was referring to the one at bottom of links.

I stand by my statement. She has that whole retro thing going for her

          4. Tulip

Keanu Reeves. WOULD. Why yes I am drinking tonight. It was a weird day.

      2. PBRstreetgang

One of my buddies represented her in a minor auto accident 15-ish years ago. Said she was really down to earth and nice.

        1. She learned her lesson about being a snotnoggin. Was nearly choked to death.

    2. mexican sharpshooter

Is that the nurse from one flew over the cuckoo’s nest?

Yes. In fact the photos of both nurses look to be taken directly from an article I penned a month or so ago….I smell conspiracy!

Or I pulled them both from a image search for “hot nurse.”

  7. Just Say’n

“This monster scarred hundreds of perfectly innocent womens’ breasts.”

Typically I am opposed to the death penalty, on philosophical grounds, but this cannot stand. An injury to one breast is an injury to all heterosexual men. Give him the chair

P.S.: Grammatically, it is ‘women’s’ and not ‘womens”. ‘Women’ is already plural

    1. Brett L

I debated, and then panicked. I guess I could have just googled.

      1. Bobarian LMD

An awful lot of euphemisms in that sentence.

      2. Rasilio

Googling womens breasts is always a good idea

  8. Juvenile Bluster

Jesus F Christ. This WaPo jock-sniffer of an article about Nicolas Maduro is disgusting. On the other hand, they have full transcripts of Trump’s conversations with foreign leaders. Which I am glad to see in public. If only that happened more often.

Seems that the author doesn’t think that Maduro is the correct top man to be in charge. All would be golden in Venezuela otherwise.

    1. Behold!

He was the right top man right until he ran out of other people’s money, at which point he was never the right top mam, unlike that hero of the revolution Chavez that the CIA cancered.

    2. Microaggressor

And he would have got away with it, if it weren’t for those pesky oil prices!

Maduro ran on a socialist platform, saying that it’s him or the oligarchy.

      What a choice!

      1. Grumbletarian

        They chose… poorly…

    3. John Titor

Death from cancer was the greatest thing to happen to Chavez for his left-wing historical image. Now he gets the Lenin treatment of “oh, it’s the guy after him who screwed everything up.”

      1. kbolino

Now he gets the Lenin treatment of “oh, it’s the guy after him who screwed everything up.”

Which is total bullshit. All of the following are directly attributable to Lenin:

        – Having the Romanovs murdered
        – Orchestrating the Red Terror
        – Waging war against the Mensheviks

        1. John Titor

At least this time there doesn’t seem to be a Trotsky figure for leftists to go “yeah, this guy would have done it right, even though he basically started most of the horrific atrocities and abuses of the Soviet government to begin with”.

          1. Pan Zagloba

            My favorite indeed.

Yes, the guy who wanted permanent world-wide revolution and was an architect of many atrocities would have done so much better than a middling technocrat who wanted to try and get the Soviet Union working first.

          2. John Titor

To be fair, that may have had the benefit of making the Soviet Union collapse way earlier…

…Or they could have gotten rolled by the Nazis and things get way worse.

        2. No body remembers those.

Well, maybe they’ll gloss over the forest execution of a well-known family. they gloss over the execution of a few million anyway, what’s six or eight more?

    4. Holger-da-Dane

“Just the wrong top man, nothing to see here” is the vibe I got too.

  9. Playa Manhattan

Ok. Beach time. It’s too hot.

    1. Trump has purchased some new beach properties. This time he hasn’t named them after himself, he’s just called the place Sunova.

      1. Playa Manhattan

He’s got a golf course about 10 miles away from here. Best brunch ever.

        1. EvilSheldon

Oh yeah. Between the Eggs Benedict and the smoked salmon, they’d lose some money on me…

      2. OK, so maybe mine was one of those jokes that was so bad it wasn’t worth acknowledging?

        1. Pomp

          Wait wuh?

  10. For damn close to a year after our daughter started daycare at least one of us was sick, if not all of us. It was ridiculous.

    1. Playa Manhattan

That happens for each kid, which is why I’m not having any more kids.

    2. thom

The people who work in those places must build up incredible immune systems.

      1. When my wife taught elementary school it was like virii were afraid to even begin to fuck with her. On the rare occasions she got sick the only way you could tell is that she’d take NyQuil.

Me? I’m like a goddamned canary. At least I can refer to my misanthropy as a biological defense mechanism.

    1. Brett L

Can you imagine getting that summons? I would put it back in my mailbox, and then pay someone to steal it.

      1. Just Say’n

It would be the classiest summons ever, though

      2. BigT

        “Can you imagine that summons?”

AFAIK jurors are permitted to ask questions. That would be awesome! Pick me, Monty!

    2. Viking1865

      Well that’s a hell of a development.

      1. Just Say’n

Considering all the leaking that is going on, I’m surprised that evidence of an actual crime has not been leaked yet. Which makes me suspicious.

        1. Chipwooder

I will bet anything that what ends up coming out of this has nothing to actually do with Russia, but rather some kind of shenanigans with trying to hush it all up. Basically, what happened with Scooter Libby.

          1. To be fair, his parents did set him to for failure with a name like that.

          2. Heroic Mulatto

            @Chipwooder

I noticed the other day that you were in Thailand when I was there.

I’m worried that our penes may have touched by proxy.

            How busy were you guys?!
80% sure you guys are Eskimo brothers.
            To the EBDB!

          4. Chipwooder

I suppose we may have had sweet manlove-by-proxy. I was in Pattaya for about one week in March 2004. On our way back from Uzbekistan, we had stopped at U Tapao for refueling, and the pilots claimed there was something wrong with the plane that was so serious that they had to fly in experts from Boeing. I suspect that the pilots just wanted a little DoD-financed RnR, myself. Anyway, they bused us over to Pattaya and put us up in the Marriott. It was a helluva week – fast as hell go carts, golf, watching children beat the piss out of each other in mui thai bouts, bungee jumping…..and poon. Lots and lots of poon.

          5. Heroic Mulatto

Pattaya is crazy. I lived in Bangkok, but I think I might have been there in March as well.

            Fuck.

          6. Gustave Lytton

Lucky ass mfer. Our C130 needed some part fixed during a refueling stop in Moron, Spain so we were supposed to be there for 24 hours. In transit barracks. No Marriott for us. Somehow they managed to find a part early and we’re now going to fly this freshly fixed prop over to Gander. All aboard!

          7. Gustave Lytton

Goddamn it. Had the wrong window open and I’m replying to a yesterday thread like a crazy corpsefucker.

        2. Dr. Fronkensteen

Mueller has summoned a grand jury

          Indicts Hillary. Heads explode.

          1. C. Anacreon

That would be the coolest end to a political movie ever!
(pictures the bailiff carrying Hillary out, as she screams at Mueller, ” You’re nothing but a lot of talk and a badge!”)

          2. Chipwooder

And then Mueller flings Debbie Wasserman-Schultz off of a rooftop.

          3. Bobarian LMD

            “She’s in the car”

    3. Playa Manhattan

      Here is a semi-serious question:
Is there such thing as a federal citizens arrest? Not that I know of. Should there be? Probably. I’m leaning towards yes, because it would force congress to stop passing stupid laws.

Under state law, if somebody wrongs me, I can arrest and prosecute them myself. If somebody tries to break into my house, I can zip tie their hands and drag them in front of a judge.

Why isn’t this so for federal law?

It’s almost like they don’t care about individual rights, and federal laws are to protect the government. Almost.

    4. westernsloper

Sources described an investigation that has widened to focus on possible financial crimes, some unconnected to the 2016 elections

Well, if that is the case, the goose is cooked. And by goose, I mean Secret Nazi President. There is no way they will not drag something out of his shady bizness life. Hell, they could probably do me in, and I am a nobody who strives to be honest unlike SNP. When are we starting a pool for impeachment?

On a related side note, if they don’t also go after the Democrats/Clinton campaign, they are corrupt as fuck and this is a joke of an investigation.

Lesbian sex has been confounding people since the dawn of time. What is it that two women do together exactly?

Thankfully we have the internet to thoroughly research this pressing issue.

Same at our house. We have a girl in the middle that is slightly less whiny than the oldest.

The rape scene in the original was pretty intense. I mean, who wants to have sex with Jeff Goldbloom?

      1. Chipwooder

        *polite applause*

No Stuart Margolin in the remake? Boooooooooooo

      2. Heroic Mulatto

        Riven.

        Seriously.

          1. Mad Scientist

You can get that in pillowcase form.

          2. I know exactly where I would rest my head

      3. The second movie is even more rapey. It’s gross.

        1. Pan Zagloba

I remember Red Letter Media guys mentioning that at some con, he heard Marina Sirtis broke down in tears over how well she is treated after ST:TNG on set. He was puzzled about what she was talking about, until he saw Death Wish 3, and found out the director wouldn’t let her cover up between takes, despite laying on cold concrete.

IMDB trivia page claims that the guys in second movie rape scene were terribly embarrassed about it, and every cut rushed to make sure the actress is OK.

          1. John Titor

I’m pretty sure the guy who made Mad Bull 34 watched all the Death Wish sequels religiously but never the original.

    2. RBS

      On one hand, Death Wish.

On the other hand, Eli Roth.

      Hm.

      1. The Last American Hero

This is the same Eli Roth that gave us the crapfest on Netflix with the cousin-fucking vampire boy and his werewolf buddy. He will screw this up. It is known.

    4. EvilSheldon

Retconning Paul Kersey as some kind of meat-eating hyper assassin is not gonna work.

      1. John Titor

The biggest thing is the growing paranoia of the Stalinist regime. Late in 1934, Sergei Kirov, an important figure in the government, is killed, and what’s known as the great terror begins ostensibly with a search for who killed him. It spreads throughout the whole Soviet government, and almost all of the original Bolsheviks who are loyal to the regime are implicated, and you have these show trials, and at the same time, there’s a crackdown on a lot of the freedoms, including the sexual freedoms. Abortion becomes illegal, divorce becomes more difficult, and you also have an extreme fear of foreigners.

Sure, a million plus people were murdered, but HOLY SHIT THEY OUTLAWED ABORTION???!?!

Prokofiev married a nice girl from Brooklyn when he was in the USA. Then he moved back to the Soviet Union under Stalin and took her with. She somehow grew disillusioned with life there, and wanted to leave, and started to agitate. So she was put in the gulag where she lived a while longer and eventually died. Prokofiev never visited her even once. I think the charitable interpretation was that he was a bit .. Aspergery. Anyway the lesson is, never date Russians for any reason.

    This is CNN.

Federal investigators exploring whether Donald Trump’s campaign colluded with Russian spies have seized on Trump and his associates’ financial ties to Russia as one of the most fertile avenues for moving their probe forward, according to people familiar with the investigation.

The web of financial ties could offer a more concrete path toward potential prosecution than the broader and murkier questions of collusion in the 2016 campaign, these sources said.

One year after the FBI opened an investigation, the probe is now managed by special counsel Robert Mueller. Sources described an investigation that has widened to focus on possible financial crimes, some unconnected to the 2016 elections, alongside the ongoing scrutiny of possible illegal coordination with Russian spy agencies and alleged attempts by President Donald Trump and others to obstruct the FBI investigation. Even investigative leads that have nothing to do with Russia but involve Trump associates are being referred to the special counsel to encourage subjects of the investigation to cooperate, according to two law enforcement sources.

US Navy veteran ordered to remove American flag wrap from mailbox

A mailbox covered with the American flag is at the center of a dispute brewing between a retired U.S. veteran and a homeowners association in Florida.

Retired U.S. Navy Officer John Ackert says he received a letter last week from the Southwood Residential Community Associate in Tallahassee that asked him to remove the wrapping of Old Glory around the mailbox or face penalties.

He told WCTV he’s not backing down without a fight and has made an appeal.

“I view this as a form of bullying to be honest,” Ackert said. “And I think people should stand up to bullying of any form, and particularly this.”

Can someone explain to my why anyone buys a house with an HOA? You’re PAYING your neighbors to harass you.

      1. Ignorance.

It’s easy not to realize the practical implications and limitations of such an agreement.

      2. Florida Man

Technically, I’m paying a company (it’s a corporation, not neighbors) to enforce standards. I have a good HOA. They only bother people about keeping their homes in good order.

      3. Rasilio

Because in most parts of the country it is very very close to impossible to buy one that does not have an HOA.

Hell I once owned a home in a community where the HOA was for all intents and purposes mandated to exist by the town. The only way the builder got permission to build was if they agreed that all of the homes would come with a deed restriction requiring them to be members of an HOA and the HOA had to agree to be responsible for a good chunk of the road maintenance within the community including snow removal. Oh yeah, get this, it also required all homeowners to agree to hire a management company to manage the HOA. We could vote to go with a different company but we could not vote to manage it ourselves. Finally for the last kicker, we were not allowed to vote to disband the HOA unless we came to an agreement with the city to take over the road management functions, something the city would of course never do unless we paid a ridiculous sum of money.

That said I agree HOA’s need to die

        1. EvilSheldon

This is extremely common with new developments.

Which makes many HOAs government agencies by default…

Because in most parts of the country it is very very close to impossible to buy one that does not have an HOA.

I’m not sure about that. Most of the country is not in a neighborhood at all. HOA’s might just be in force where most people want to live. Some of us don’t.

          1. Rasilio

yes but most parts of the country are remote areas where 99% of us couldn’t live because there are no jobs and we lack the skills/ability to be subsistence farmers. In places with actual jobs homes that are not in an HOA range from difficult to impossible to find.

          2. westernsloper

It is all about what you want. I have no problem if someone wants to live under an HOA. Personal choice. But I assure you everyone not in an HOA is not a subsistence farmer. If that was the case I would have starved already. Maybe there is no job you would like in some areas but that is still just a choice. Just like I choose to not live under an HOA and or in a city. I like having choices.

      4. Juvenile Bluster

Michigan Couples Sue Over State’s Attempt to Disarm Adoptive and Foster Parents

Most media savvy gun control advocates try to insist that nobody wants to ban guns in America and that anybody who says otherwise is either paranoid or guilty of fear-mongering.

According to a lawsuit filed in a Michigan federal court, however, anti-gun bureaucrats at the state’s Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) are subjecting gun-owing adoptive and foster parents to a stark choice: their Second Amendment rights or their kids.

    1. DOOMco

There was similar article out recently, it may have even been here so hat tip to whoever posted it. Basically a grandfather wanted to take in his grandson(?) when the kids was removed from the parents. The grandfather had a CCW or some guns licensed and Social Services told him that he either had to turn over all his guns or the kids would go to a stranger in the foster system.

The article didn’t say it but I have no doubt the social worker made it very clear to the grandfather about the fate that awaited his flesh and blood for not complying. I do not understand how any parent can ever let their children go off with those monsters while they still draw breath.

      1. Thymirus

“The complaint quotes the judge as stating, “We know we are violating numerous constitutional rights here, but if you do not comply, we will remove the boy from your home.” Likewise, the Johnsons claim, MDHHS caseworkers told them “there would not be a power struggle, that they would just take his grandson and place him in a foster home.””

Undoubtedly, female nudity has become an accomplice to get viewers through bad plotlines and awkward acting. And sometimes it’s just the cherry atop the box office sundae. But why is female nudity so much more ubiquitous than male nudity? And what does this say about the role of women in the world?

According to a 2005 University of Pennsylvania study, 57% of US teenagers, ages 14 to 16, identified television, film and other media as the primary source of information about sex and gender. In a post-#ImWithHer era, are we really still OK with such widespread and normalized objectification of the female body?

Objectification is wrong, so let’s do more of it?

    2. Rasilio

–” But why is female nudity so much more ubiquitous than male nudity?”–

Because women are far less interested in seeing men nude than men are in seeing women nude. As a general rule men are sexually attracted to a woman’s physical form and women are attracted to a man’s social status so there is FAR less to be gained in showing male nudity.

–“And what does this say about the role of women in the world?”–

Um, nothing. 99.9% of the people who watch movies and television shows are perfectly aware that what they are seeing is a fantasy and carry little to nothing out of the experience into their day to day lives nor do they expect what they see to match what they know to be true about their day to day lives.

What is says is that you get more viewers by giving viewers more of what they enjoy. Men on average enjoy seeing naked female bodies significantly more than women on average enjoy looking at naked male bodies. That is it, it says absolutely nothing more about anything.

But how do you know he’s a lumberjack if he’s nude?

That was kind of the point, most women (not all to be sure but most) are not specifically attracted to the general male body but to a specific type of male who they may or may not wish to see nude. I have actually known more than a few completely heterosexual women who had less than no interest in seeing naked men because it wasn’t their physical shape that made them attractive but something else about them that signaled their wealth or status. My wife is kind of like that, she drools all over pictures of Jason Momoa as Aquaman but has little interest in seeing pictures of naked men, even ones who look a bit like Jason Momoa would sans clothes. For men, again as a general rule, they don’t care as much about the fact that Gal Gadot was dressed as Wonder Woman as they do about the fact that the specific Wonder Woman costume they chose is one which showed a lot of skin and the fact that she is gorgeous.

You can make the occasional movie that focuses on male nudity (Magic Mike) and make money off of it but sprinkling nude men throughout something that is about something else is not gonna convince anyone who wasn’t really into that thing to watch it (at least not enough to meaningfully impact the bottom line), you *can* do that with naked women.

GOT is a perfect example. If you took every single scene with a naked man or 2 dudes making out out of the show you would have lost approximately 0 viewers. If you however took out all of the naked women you would have lost my guess is as much as 5 to 10% of your audience

          1. KibbledKristen

Lumberjack in the way I meant it refers to a purely physical shape, not a profession.

Mostly I’d go for the dude to the right of the old lady (not her right – the right on the picture)

          11. Rasilio

Indeed I am well aware of it. And that “lots” of people amounts to a small wing of a small sub group of a small minority demographic.

Trust me, I am a Polyamorous male who hangs out in the BDSM community and plays role playing and board games and has a gay 14 year old daughter that identifies as a Furry and in my first marriage was married to a professional Filk musician I know all about fringe culture groups. I am also realistic about just how small those communities actually are and how far from the mainstream views they are.

Lots of people in this case might mean a few hundred thousand in the US

          12. I’m glad you’ve poled most of those people, so you know. Lol.

          13. Pan Zagloba

you’ve poled most of those people

It’s like John was living among us again *sniff*

Dear Edit Fairy, pls preserve this pls.

          14. Rasilio

I don’t need to pole anyone on the subject, in fact doing so would be highly likely to produce an inaccurate result anyway. Fortunately we have several bodies of evidence that prove my point starting with the actual issue raised in this post.

If including naked men in movies and tv increased viewership marketers would have already done it.

Next look at porn, they’ve been making porn for women for almost 30 years now and it is still a tiny fraction of the overall porn industry. You could combine porn for women with gay male porn and you might just barely get to 25% of the industry. On the flip side there is no male equivalent of a Harlequin Romance Novel.

I don’t have to interview anyone, the proof of what I am saying is already readily available in the revealed preferences of people in the marketplace.

      2. John Titor

Um, nothing. 99.9% of the people who watch movies and television shows are perfectly aware that what they are seeing is a fantasy and carry little to nothing out of the experience into their day to day lives nor do they expect what they see to match what they know to be true about their day to day lives.

Hey now, everyone remembers the waves of violence following the introduction of video games and all those guys who turned gay because of Dharma and Greg.

      3. Because women are far less interested in seeing men nude than men are in seeing women nude. As a general rule men are sexually attracted to a woman’s physical form and women are attracted to a man’s social status so there is FAR less to be gained in showing male nudity.

I feel sorry for you if this is what you’ve come to expect from most women. Lol. I mean, I personally am not attracted to Mr. Riven due to his social status/pocketbook. We’re home-bodies who get out socially maybe once a month if that; we live within our means but not lavishly (which doesn’t appeal to either of us, either); and I like looking at naked male bodies … and naked female bodies…

        1. John Titor

Yeah, but you want to fuck Jeff Goldblum, you’re a freak of nature.

Individual exceptions to a general rule do not negate the general rule.

Ask yourself, in your dating days did you like receiving unsolicited nudes from men (assume withing the normal range of height and weight)? How about Mr Riven, not that I think it ever happened but would he have liked receiving unsolicited nudes from women?

Now in your individual case YOU might say yes and he might say no, how common do you thing those answers would be?

You will note I never claimed no women liked seeing naked men, the existance of Magic Mike and the Chippendales dancers proves that to be false. What I said was that it was LESS COMMON for women to like seeing naked men, specifically that it was less common for the presence of naked men to change their perception about a movie or tv show.

Further I was not implying that women were gold diggers when I said that women were attracted to a mans social status because it is not exclusively rich dudes with fat wallets that women are attracted to. Lumberjacks aren’t rich but that is the kind of guy Kristen is into, I’m betting she would not be particularly interested in a rich little pretty boy like say Edward Cullen. For a majority of women the fact that the guy is a hot lumberjack (or artist, or clean cut marine, or whatever type of guy it is that does it for them) is more important than whether he is dressed or not, for most men it is the opposite what she is or does is less important than the shape of her body and how much of it is showing.

          1. Ask yourself, in your dating days did you like receiving unsolicited nudes from men (assume withing the normal range of height and weight)?

Yes. Lol. I’m not including “dickpics” in this, however; did not like getting those. I’ll cast my female gaze on on naked men, though, for days. I assume Mr. Riven was down for unsolicited lady pics. (Got a few of those, too, myself.)

I can’t speak for how common our answers would or wouldn’t be because I’m generally not in the habit of grilling other people on those kinds of preferences. I do know that several categories in pornography exist for the benefit of women–some of them even largely produced by women, see the yaoi referenced above for a specific example.

I wasn’t looking for a whole discussion on this. I mostly* just thought it was funny, you ruminating on what most women found attractive/important, despite probably not talking to most women about it and not being a woman yourself. Just speculating on the speculative nature of your post. 😛 Don’t take it personal; it’s not.

            *see what i did there?

          2. What surprised me was that no one took your quote about also liking to see naked women to point out that this trait would result in unclothed female bodies being an attraction for a larger overall (combined male and female viewership) than for using unclothed men.

Since it’s all about agregate viewership in the end…

          3. I’m glad you made that point. I thought about it after I posted, as well.

          4. Rasilio

It was another point I had but left it out for brevity’s sake, my posts already tend to be overly verbose as it is

          5. John Titor

Men are more interested in female bodies for the sake of reproduction and the potential of both their mate and their offspring surviving.

Women are both about male bodies for their sweet, sweet genetics and their status or abilities allowing for some degree of a stable lifestyle.

            Everyone else is weird.

          6. Dr. Fronkensteen

Men’s magazines have women in them. Women’s magazines have women in them. Why? That’s because women’s bodies are beautiful. Men’s bodies are hairy and lumpy and should not been seen by the light of day.

          7. Pan Zagloba

Unless they’re Jeff Goldblum, apparently. So solution is to replace all male characters with Earth Girls are Easy Jeff?

          8. How could you say no to this?

          9. John Titor

I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

          10. Vhyrus

Well, I can say no to it like this:

            “Okay, lemme see.. uuuhhh… no”

          11. John Titor

Shit, Vhyrus, you’re goldbluming, the infection is spreading!

          12. You are both very welcome for that.

          13. A Leap at the Wheel

You are making a good point. Women, broadly speaking, are attracted to professions while men are attracted to outfits. No man says “the way she shelves books is hot,” its about the glasses and bun. No woman says “then he velcroed up hi nomex coat,” its about the risk taking and masculine confidence when shits on fire.

And the test is mass media success, if you are looking at what the mass market wants. There are no carefully lit shots of a dude’s scroat in chickflicks, and there’s no hot unemployed guy winning the girls over. There are quite a few ‘dress a pretty girl up in a costume’ shots in dudeflicks.

          14. Heroic Mulatto

No man says “the way she shelves books is hot”

It always annoys me when Christians act like they invented morality or the concept of freedom and limited govt. Modern day conservative Christians owe a lot more to Enlightenment thinkers than the Bible when it comes to their basic world view.

Individual rights, checks and balances, enumerated powers- none of these ideas came from the Bible. They came from guys like Montesquieu and Locke. Ancient Athens and the Magna Carta influenced the US constitution way more than the Bible.

Communists want to tear down religion because they want to make themselves gods on their earth. They will not allow people to have loyalty to anything other than the almighty govt.

He sang, circled me once and flew away. And I felt his spirit. I felt him giving us a blessing, saying now the battle begins, go to victory.”

Here in CO we are split at the state level at the house and the senate. Half the state is for the most part not represented in my opinion. But the large metropolitan areas are represented just fine and that is the way they like it. Between the house and the senate, there are 100 of the mutherfuckers doing what they do. It should take about 20-30 people if it was honest. If you get 100 people who think they need to do something, they are going to do something and it will usually be a bad idea but god damnit, they did something.

        1. The Zenome Project

I think that they now have enough governors to start talking about constitutional conventions, which is the interesting part to me.

          1. Grumbletarian

They are very close. There are 34 Republican governors, and an independent in Alaska. I think it takes 36 states to call for a convention.

          2. DOOMco

Are there a few govs up for election in 18?

          3. The Zenome Project

Yes. CO, NM, KS, NV, FL, MN, MI, ME, and CT have open seats. RI and PA have rather unpopular Dem governors running. If Gillespie wins in VA (growing more and more likely b/c Dems are fracturing over pipeline) and cancels out the likely NJ flip, the GOP may be in good position to get more governorships. The problem Dems have is that their voters don’t turnout very much outside of presidential elections.

          4. DOOMco

I should look into our election here in colorado…

          5. Stinky Wizzleteats

The Reps, including those at the state level, talk a good game but don’t want to do any of it when they have the opportunity. Even if they could call the CC they’d either refuse to do it or would intentionally fuck it up.

See the recent healthcare debacle and the upcoming tax reform debacle-they’re as worthless as the Dems.

          6. DOOMco

I have more faith in the governors and state govs. Maybe that’s misguided.

          7. The Zenome Project

A lot of state legislatures are generally better than the federal legislature at actually getting conservative stuff passed. The ones in NC have managed to cut both spending and taxes and have enough unity to override the Dem governor’s vetoes.

          8. Grumbletarian

Meh, it would still take 3/4ths of states to actually ratify any proposed amendments, so in all likelihood nothing would come of a convention anyway.

So I guess this Death Wish series is pretty brutal, huh?

Isn’t it weird that we still produce revenge fantasies, but the stakes are tons lower? Now Liam Neeson’s daughter is abducted, at least in the first film, and while there’s intimations of rape and worse as Neeson tracks her down, her own virginal purity is lampshaded by a convenient plot contrivance. Which is kinda fucked up, at least as far as his daughter’s travel buddy was concerned: drugged, raped, and left as a sort of hitching post for other rapists.

John Wick was better in that regard, anyway. The stakes are low, at least inasmuch as attempting to recoup anything from the ensuing slaughter. Instead, it’s all about the mayhem and the weird culty underworld Wick inhabits. No hostages, nobody to save. That one Clive Owen movie was pretty good in that sense. I mean, sure, you had the baby McGuffin, but that made the movie all the more ridiculous because of course they’re not killing the baby. It was a send-up of the whole genre.

I don’t think I’ll watch Death Wish. I’m pretty squeamish about simulated rape.

    1. DOOMco

      Again. Deadpool.
      Pure revenge, cold anger.
Some implied rape, i suppose. Or at least an attempt for it.

      1. I recently learned (SPOILER ALERT, KIND OF) that the rescue scene at the climax (as it were) of Birth of a Nation is different from the book on which it was based. In the book, the Klan is racing to the rescue, not of a young woman who is about to be forcibly married to the mulatto guy, but of a young man who is about to be hanged by the U. S. military for some outrage against black people.

I guess Griffith was like “if we’re going to ride to someone’s rescue, it better be a hot chick and not a dude they’re rescuing.”

        1. Winston

Interesting that Thomas Dixon didn’t like the 1920s KKK for their anti-semitism and anti-catholicism.

          1. Interesting. Dixon focused his persecuting energies on a single group – black people – so maybe he had no energy left over for inter-white hatreds.

Or maybe he was sentimental about Judah Benjamin and Fr. Abram Ryan.

          2. Winston

Judging by the Fall of a Nation Dixon didn’t like what the Pilgrims did to the natives. Though they were Yankees after all.

I get the feeling that Dixon felt the blacks were an alien race who didn’t belong in America as their ancestors were brought over against their will as slaves whiles the natives were already here and the Jews, Irish and Italians immigrated of their own free will.

Oddly enough many “antiracists” would describe the blacks in the same way.

      2. westernsloper

Deadpool is now one of my favorite movies. I might watch it again tonight. Good stuff.

    2. I’ve watched so many movies, from the good to the bad to the “I can’t believe I watched that,” that I’ve generally developed a good deal of distance from them. “Oh, yeah, more violence.”

A really good movie, featuring a protagonist you root for going through some serious problems to overcome, can still move me, though I could do without the theme music which proclaims “OK, it’s time for you to be moved now.”

      1. commodious spittoon

NRO had a piece up about Unforgiven, which shamefully is one I have not watched. And I like westerns. Well, I like the westerns I’ve seen. I’m not like a genre fanatic.

        1. Here we go.

Well, that was even less cheerful than the movie it reviewed.

Despite much-ballyhooed efforts at nuance and complexity, when Hollywood attempts it it generally just ends up as an equally-simplistic appeal to cynicism and violent instincts.

Which is why I don’t necessarily mind a well-executed melodrama like 12 Years a Slave – yes, it points you to the bad guys and the good guys and tells you who to cheer for, but at least it doesn’t take your money and give you nothing but vicarious violence slathered all over with shrug of “life sucks.”

Like the Lord Chancellor said in a routine for the British comedy group Beyond the Fringe: “I go to the theater to be taken out of myself. I don’t want to watch a lot of rape, sodomy and incest, I can get all that at home.”

          1. The only part of *Pulp Fiction* which really engaged me was that boxer who was trying to escape the mob – it was genuinely tense for me because I knew that Tarantino was perfectly capable of killing of any character, no matter how sympathetic. So I could genuinely root for the boxer while hoping he escaped.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_the_Army_(Japan)

From the time of its creation, the post of Army Minister was usually filled by an active-duty general in the Imperial Japanese Army. This practice was made into law…. [snip]
At the same time, the Imperial Japanese Army prohibited its generals from accepting political offices except by permission from Imperial General Headquarters. Taken together, these arrangements gave the Imperial Japanese Army an effective, legal right to nominate (or refuse to nominate) the Army Minister. The ability of the Imperial Japanese Army to refuse to nominate an Army Minister gave it effective veto power over the formation (or continuation) of any civilian administration

So is the US in a situation where the intelligence agencies have a veto over the civilian government? Also see Watergate and the JFK assassination conspiracies…

Thanks for reminding me of Bill Weld. For a supposedly pragmatic move couldn’t you at least get at guy who would support his own party in that election cycle?

The 2016 election showed me that “Republicans who smokes pot” is not an inaccurate depiction of the LP. I mean as soon as you adopt a “big government is bad but we can’t do anything about it now” position how different are you from a Republican?

  44. Winston

2016 LP campaign showef some really stupid things for a pragmatic campaign.

Nazi cakes and religious liberty being a “black hole” wasn’t not dying on some hill but retreating from hills that were still defensible. And Nazi cakes was one situation where the progs would support freedom of association.

Then there was the whole “no litmus tests for SCOTUS but Kelo kind of is one and the preferred judges who voted for Kelo”.

Also calling Hillary a good public servant when the goal was to appeal to Republicans and Democrats who don’t like Hillary as well as Trump.

    1. The Zenome Project

I wonder sometimes if Weld also had some of Gary’s stuff, since he basically still campaigned as if he was running for a deep-blue state governor position, like he was in MA.

      1. DOOMco

I think if they had focused on some purple states, or went all in on a state they could have won (i know, stop laughing) there could have been a way to keep the big guys from 270. Not that theyd have won the house after that, but it would have been a giant wake up. I think the LP thinks they can have a say in all the states. Im glad they fight to get on all the ballots, but think they wasted some effort on a few places.
But I’m not a pol or a campaign manager, so who knows

      2. Winston

Seems both Weld and Johnson forgot they were running on a third party campaign where they really needed to show why both parties suck and why third party is better rather than running as a Republican in a blue state.

  45. Winston

So judges. I’be never been too comfortable with the notion that laws and rights exist solely at the whim of some unelected judges.

Five SCOTUS judges could either repeal a century of big government or allow POTUS to make himself dictator.

And who pray tell will appoint these libertarianish judges?

    1. The Zenome Project

Well, technically judicial review in the sweeping way that it is done today shouldn’t even be allowed, since it isn’t even in the Constitution. However, since judicial activism has damaged liberty in such a sweeping manner, I do hope for more originalism in the SCOTUS in the future.

    2. westernsloper

It would not matter so much if things where not as they are. As mentioned above about Convention of States. One of the amendments I have heard tossed about it is ending lifetime appointments. Where did this even come from? It is not in the constitution. Why should we have to be ruled by RBG who defers to European law as well as the dumbest woman to ever get a judgeship her excellency Sonia Sotomayer? It is beyond dumb they sit for life.

  46. Is this the part where we beat on Johnson (phrasing!)

His supporters were like some autistic dudes who realized that libertarians might have to make some compromises on purity to gain more support – but they decided to surrender some of the very points where libertarian “purity” was popular.

I mean, Gary could have said “I want all lifestyle choices to be equally legal, man. Cops shouldn’t hassle you over the ganja, or because you have a wedding ceremony with your same-sex lover, or because you have a business which only caters to opposite-sex weddings. Whatever floats your boat, man.”

Instead, his message was “freedom for stuff I think is cool – like the ganja – but not for stuff I think is uncool – like Christian bakers.” Yeah, that’s pragmatic for a libertarian – attacking the liberty of traditional Christians!

Apologies to my Welsh friends, I’m reminded of the line in A Man for All Seasons – “It profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world … but for Wales, Richard?”

Really, Gary, you’d sell your soul for cocktail-party invitations?

My scholarship currently focuses on applying liberative pedagogies in engineering education, leveraging best practices from women’s studies and ethnic studies to engage students in creating a democratic classroom that encourages all voices. In 2005 I received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation to support this work, which includes developing, implementing, and assessing curricular and pedagogical innovations based on liberative pedagogies and student input at Smith, and understanding how students at Smith conceptualize their identities as engineers. I seek as an engineering educator to be part of a paradigm shift that these pedagogies demand, repositioning concerns about diversity in science and engineering from superficial measures of equity as headcounts, to addressing justice and the genuine engagement of all students as core educational challenges.

I currently teach traditional courses in the areas of chemical and environmental engineering, as well as elective courses on engineering and global development, science, technology, and ethics (cross-listed with SWG) and technological risk assessment and communication. I seek to revise engineering curricula to be relevant to a fuller range of student experiences and career destinations, integrating concerns related to public policy, professional ethics and social responsibility; de-centering Western civilization; and uncovering contributions of women and other underrepresented groups.

In EGR 330 (Engineering and Global Development), we critically evaluate past and current trends in appropriate and sustainable technology. We examine how technology influences and is influenced by globalization, capitalism and colonialism, and the role technology plays in movements that counter these forces. Gender is a key thread running through the course in examining issues of water supply and quality, food production and energy.

In EGR 205 (Science, Technology and Ethics), we consider questions such as who decides how science and engineering are done, who can participate in the scientific enterprise and what problems are legitimately addressed within these disciplines and professions. We take up racist and colonialist projects in science, as well as the role of technology, culture and economic systems in the drive toward bigger, faster, cheaper and more automated production of goods. A course theme around technology and control provides for exploration of military, information, reproductive and environmental applications. Using readings from philosophy, science and technology studies, and feminist and postcolonial science studies, we explore these topics and encounter new models of science and engineering that are responsive to ethical concerns.

A computer science major I know said something to me one day: “Did you know that the first computer programmer in history was a woman? And that historically, there were more women than men involved in computer science, but the balance has shifted in recent decades?”

It sounded highly implausible, and a Google search showed that it was not in fact true. The “first computer programmer” tidbit seems to be in reference to Ada Lovelace, whose role as the first computer programmer doesn’t seem to be supported by historical evidence at all. Involved, yes. Influential, maybe. But not “the first computer programmer”. And I couldn’t find anything to substantiate the claim that computer science has historically been a majority female field.

The whole thing sounds like something a professor made up (or was told to say) in order to further the narrative that there are “not enough women in STEM” and that the government has to “do something” to correct this horrible injustice.

    ***
Aug. 3 (UPI) — Maine will become the fourth state to raise the tobacco smoking age to 21, after lawmakers voted to override the governor’s veto that would have kept the age at 18.

Gov. Paul R. LePage derided the bill as “social engineering” and argued that if 18-year-old people are old enough to join the military, they should be allowed to smoke.

“I’m not going to strap a gun to their shoulder and go fight a war if they can’t go buy cigarettes,” LePage said in July when he explained his veto. “I’ll tell you, this is just sinful, it is absolutely sinful, and I believe that at 18 they are mature enough to make a decision and I’m tired of living in a society where we social engineer our lives.”

State Sen. Paul Davis criticized LePage’s argument.

“People who join the military don’t have 15-year-old kids following them around and being impressed by their actions,” he told WMTW.

Aug. 1 (UPI) — A new scientific survey suggests “booty” is the funniest word in the English language.

Humor mostly eludes scientific analysis. But while formulas fail to render new jokes, science can identity what people find funny — like words.

Researchers at the University of Warwick used an internet survey to identify the funniest words in the English language. Psychologists presented 5,000 randomly selected words to 800 online volunteers.

Survey takers rated each word’s hilarity on a scale of one to five, five being the most humorous.

Researchers shared the results of the survey this week in the journal Behavior Research Methods.

After booty, the next nine funniest words include: tit, booby, hooter, nitwit, twit, waddle, tinkle, bebop, egghead, ass and twerp.

Each survey participant shared their age, gender and highest level of education. The findings showed men tend to find sexual words funnier than women. Men also found words such as weld, prod, corn and racoon more humorous, while women were more likely to appreciate the humor of words like ennui, holder, momma and sod.

Younger survey participants, ages 18 to 32, thought goatee, joint and gangster were especially funny, while older respondents were more likely to laugh at words like squint, jingle, burlesque and pong.

I’ve said this before but a big problem with libertarians is that many of them engage in this reactionary appeal to an idealized non-existent 1960s-1970s past where they got this idea that libertarianism is a combination of Democratic social policies and Republican fiscal policies. This can be seen in the “fiscally conservative socially liberal” slogan and the Nolan chart.

Problem is reality shows that Republicans aren’t very fiscally conservative and Democrats don’t care about civil liberties.

    1. The Zenome Project

If the Republicans were like their House chamber, they could actually be more fiscally conservative. I think a few more Senate purges and an abolishment of the 17th Amendment could do wonders.

Conversation I just had this morning:

Company : “We wouldn’t not be more than willing to listen to your company’s proposal at 1 pm, if you wouldn’t mind.”
Me: “I understand. Great I’ll see you at 1. Looking forward to it.”
Company: “Great. From 1 to 3 is the time that wouldn’t be inconvenient for us. Wouldn’t that be a problem?”.
Me: “Okey Dokey. 1 to 3. See you then. Thanks.”
Company: “We are glad that isn’t going to not be a problem you don’t think. Thank you very much.”
Me (Inside my head): “It isn’t going to be a problem for me not to beat you senseless for not speaking like a lunatic.”

Also I see the LP making a real effort to win in DC. They manage to occasionally get 10% in some city council seats (with no Republican natch) and just under 6 % for delegate ahead of the greens (again no Republican) so they are nothing more than protest votes.

One year they ran Jon LeBeaume for city council. This is the guy who has written in Reason that the LP had a chance to win Georgia 6 (spoiler: couldn’t field a candidate), seems to think fedgov employees are a libertarian constituency and described libertarianism as having to “balance” social and fiscal freedom which sounds like he thinks we need to give up fiscal issues.

    1. The Zenome Project

FedGov bureaucrats are a libertarian constituency? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA…whew…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

      1. Winston

The actual remarks he made was about how he would rather be with the “ringing cash registers” of DC than CPAC. Said registers are ringing thanks to fedgov employees.

2 tons of illegal ivory crushed in Central Park
    https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2017/08/03/2-tons-of-illegal-ivory-crushed-in-Central-Park/1521501784878/?utm_source=fp&utm_campaign=ls&utm_medium=2

    ***
Aug. 3 (UPI) — New York state and the Wildlife Conservation Society on Thursday partnered to crush nearly 2 tons of confiscated illegal ivory in Central Park.

Wildlife advocates used a rock crusher to obliterate delicately carved elephant tusks and figurines “to send a strong message to the world that New York state and its partners will work tirelessly to end wildlife crimes that threaten to wipe out African elephants and a host of other species around the globe,” a release from the WCS said.

New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation, and Tiffany and Co. also took part in the event.

“These actions make it clear that in New York, we condemn the depraved, violent and illegal industry that is ivory sales,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “The ivory crush along with our vigilant enforcement efforts take us one step closer to ending this senseless slaughtering of animals — I urge other leaders across the nation and across the globe to join us is working to protect these magnificent threatened species for generations to come.”

In 2014, Cuomo signed a law to prevent the trade of illegal ivory by strengthening criminal and civil penalties for buyers and sellers. The law targeted elephant and mammoth ivory sales, as well as rhinoceros horns. Antiques at least 100 years old and containing a small amount of ivory were exempt.
    ***

Great work, guys. This is just like that time Carrie Nation smashed all the those whiskey bottles and no one ever bought alcohol again.

Why is mammoth ivory illegal? They’re already extinct.

    2. Akira

It’s almost like elephants might be better preserved if people could cultivate them on their own property as a valuable commodity instead of just banning the trade of said commodity and thinking that poachers won’t just kill them and sell the commodity on the black market.

    3. Grumbletarian

Great work making ivory more valuable by reducing the supply of it. That’s some nice crushing, Lou.

NC State admin proposes exclusive housing for ‘women of color’
    http://www.campusreform.org/?ID=9538

Less than one month into the job, North Carolina State University’s new Director of Multicultural Student Affairs has big plans, including a new housing option exclusively for ‘women of color.’
Nashia Whittenburg plans to submit the proposal by next February, describing it as a refuge for female minority students to “deal with some of the microaggressions you might have had to deal with throughout your entire day.”

    ***
The new Director of Multicultural Student Affairs at North Carolina State University recently pledged to create a segregated housing option for “women of color” only.

Nashia Whittenburg, who was hired by NC State less than a month ago, shared her plans to create the housing option for female minority students in a university news release published Tuesday, adding that she plans to submit an official proposal for the housing option by February 2018.

“The point and purpose is if you are a Latina and you are an engineering major, with a very specific specialization, you may not ever see anybody who looks like you,” Whittenburg explained. “But when you come home, here is your opportunity to get some support and to deal with some of the microaggressions you might have had to deal with throughout your entire day when you’ve been at class.”

While NC State already has two housing options for racial minorities—one exclusively for black males and another for Native American students—the school does not currently have one for female racial minority students, hence Whittenburg’s proposal.

For the New Far Right, YouTube Has Become the New Talk Radio

To the extent that these personalities challenge their viewers, it’s to commit even more deeply to what their intuitions already tell them is true — not despite those opinions’ rejection from mainstream liberal thought, but because of it. Theirs is a potent and time-tested strategy. Unpopular arguments can benefit from being portrayed as forbidden, and marginal ideas are more effectively sold as hidden ones.

Black Pigeon, Molyneux and Watson all reach more people than NY Magazine, but they are “Far Right”. Fine, what does that make you?

    1. Heroic Mulatto

I never heard of Black Pigeon, but if the article’s description is accurate, he sounds like a raging asshole. Watson is a lunatic. But Molyneux? I wouldn’t describe him as far right. He’s a quite milquetoast unorthodox Objectivist with creepy mommy issues, that’s all.

      1. straffinrun

[Molyneux] has civilizational, apocalyptic fixations — .

        Pot meet kettle.

      2. John Titor

I would say Watson is less a lunatic, and more “a very spirited weirdo”.

    2. DOOMco

Theres no lefty youtubers, nope! None at all.

      1. The Zenome Project

It’s like they try to forget that Secular Talk, The Young Turks, Humanist Report, and Pakman exist because they’re taking all of their proggy readership away.

      2. CPRM

Things are on youtube besides Honest Trailers and Red Letter Media?

      3. Holger-da-Dane

They’re not “lefty”, merely “normal” or “sane”. Why else would YT promote them in curated trending lists, despite plunging views?

    3. straffinrun

Just so you know this isn’t a simply a random article on the “Far Right”. Check out YouTube’s own words on it’s upcoming policy changes:

Tougher standards: We’ll soon be applying tougher treatment to videos that aren’t illegal but have been flagged by users as potential violations of our policies on hate speech and violent extremism. If we find that these videos don’t violate our policies but contain controversial religious or supremacist content, they will be placed in a limited state. The videos will remain on YouTube behind an interstitial, won’t be recommended, won’t be monetized, and won’t have key features including comments, suggested videos, and likes. We’ll begin to roll this new treatment out to videos on desktop versions of YouTube in the coming weeks, and will bring it to mobile experiences soon thereafter. These new approaches entail significant new internal tools and processes, and will take time to fully implement.

      1. The Zenome Project

YouTube is currently run by an uber-feminist lunatic, so this comes as no surprise.

      2. CPRM

I’ve had a youtube account since 2006, the one video I uploaded that got bounced out is a clip I can probably post a hundred links to but I’ll just do this one. NBC Universal is shitty.

      3. Holger-da-Dane

Forcing comments off is brilliant. People have been questioning for a while why left leaning content often voluntarily turn off comments, while right leaning channels allow open discussion.

        1. The Zenome Project

What’s to stop the major right wing YT channels from creating their own forums and posting them in the description box? More importantly, what’s to stop them from finding a friendlier outlet to post their vids, now that they have the subscriber clout to do so?

      4. DOOMco

        Fuck them.
I’ve been starting to use vidme.
One of the channels I’m subscribed to, Penguinz0, started using it when they got angry about the monetization and censorship. He’s not political, as far as i can tell anyway.
Hoping others go that way as well.
YouTube killed a bunch of sites back in the day, they can die too.

        1. straffinrun

Imagine if you owned a cafe and a large portion of your sales came from Marxists that held regular meetings at your cafe. That is how YouTube execs feel.

          1. CPRM

Then apparently Youtube execs don’t read Youtube comments. Those are’t very Marxist.

          2. Heroic Mulatto

I’d be laughing all the way to the bank, myself.

          3. The Zenome Project

Marxists are gonna Marx: if they like my coffee and pastries, why does it matter what their beliefs are? That’s probably why I can’t relate to most people.

        2. The Zenome Project

Many of the channels turned to Patreon to get “monetized”, but turns out that place is also run by a prog, who in turn suspended Lauren Southern’s account. It’s as if everywhere you turn in tech, there’s some progs gatekeeping it.

          1. straffinrun

HM is a prog? We need a new Glibkeeper.

          2. Holger-da-Dane

            Great (or deranged) minds..

        3. Holger-da-Dane

They’ve demonstrated a willingness to go after any form of monetization. Loads of youtubers started patreons after being demonetized, now patreon got the Kultur Krieg memo and have started closing people’s accounts based on political bias.

I’m not prone to conspiracy nuttiness, but wouldn’t be surprised if there was a journolist kind of thing happening. Tons of social media sites suddenly opened “safety councils” and the like in rapid succession. If nothing else there are gatekeepers in all these organisations who think smothering viewpoints they don’t like is great.

          1. CPRM

            examples?

          2. Holger-da-Dane

Lauren Suthern was kicked off patreon. They opened an investigation into Sargon, but couldn’t find anything damning.

YT, Twitter, FB all started departments to deal with “hate speech” and “extremism”, except they’ve been used at various points to go after political activists. Or worse. FB has been helping Pakistan “fight” blasphemy by supporting identifying information about apostates.

I’m sure its not intentionally evil, but rather some kind of misguided principle that just happens to have evil consequences.

          3. CPRM

Not doubting; but I didn’t see no citations or links. I’m always looking for info.

        4. Holger-da-Dane

A bunch of creators have started their own platforms. Either alone or in groups. Mug club or full30 are examples.

Luckily something like patreon is a lot easier to create than a vid site. They’ll need more than culture war to take that down. Like getting banks to stop providing services to the company. But noone has ever tried that before..

          1. CPRM

creators starting their own platform is not evidence they were blacklisted from others.

          2. Holger-da-Dane

Except where they’ve come out to say so? Also a soft blacklist, rather than actual blacklisting. So far most have been allowed to keep content up, they’ve just been barred from earning anything from them.

Yet other channels are constantly violating YT’s terms and retain monetization while being actively promoted by the platform (see TyT and their use off language.)

I’m sure the political fault lines all this happens across is just coincidental though.

          3. CPRM

I’m not doubting, again, something I haven’t heard of or looked into. So just want to see the evidence.

          4. CPRM

This is kind of like hearing of gamergate or the attempt to take over ‘react’ videos, but without ever seeing any evidence. (from my point of view)

          5. Holger-da-Dane

One loud critic who started his own platform exactly for the stated reasons:

            https://m.youtube.com/results?q=mug+club+demonetization

          6. CPRM

where is the proof he was demonitized?

          7. Holger-da-Dane

Lack of commercials on a lot of his videos? His word? I don’t know what you’re looking for here.

I suppose he could have intentionally demonetized his own videos in some crazy scam to deprive his family and employees of income.

          8. CPRM

playing cynic here; but what evidence is there besides him saying youtube demonitized the videos?

          9. Holger-da-Dane

You’re right, there is none. Maybe he just wanted to run with all the cool demonetized kids on YT? Like pewdiepie or philipdefranco.

Could be Lauren Suthern shut down her own patreon account too. And Sargon could have forged the investigation letter he got.

Maybe the people who went on full30, demonetized their own videos on YT, because they like to be part of a smaller, tight knit community with less earning potential?

People do crazy shit all the time, so without iron clad evidence, that’s perfectly within the realm of possibility 🙂

          10. CPRM

I mean, in this day and age, to cry you’re being mistreated is the best way to get money; and although I’ve found him entertaining, I don’t think he stands on principles more than he wants revenue.

          11. Holger-da-Dane

If you really want revenue, why bank on pity and then having to manage and run your own infrastructure, find advertisers, etc. when your current platform does all that for you?

Why not try to get income from both places at least?

Just to play the cynic here..

          12. Holger-da-Dane

And how likely is his average viewer to buy into the victimhood pity party mentality?

          13. Holger-da-Dane

Even if you plan to never use YT again, why risk pissing off Google, the biggest ad game in town?

          14. Holger-da-Dane

The same company that owns the search engine you probably need for a significant portion of your site traffic.

          15. The Zenome Project

Isn’t that what the French banks basically did to Le Pen and the National Front earlier this year? And those basically were glorified nationalist Bernie-ites.

          16. Holger-da-Dane

            I didn’t hear about that. But I’m sure it’s a one off. A fluke.

It certainly couldn’t happen here, what could compel banks to not do business with certain kinds of customers?

  58. The Zenome Project

Watson is reasonably sane (for InfoWars) and hates perpetual war, so overall he’s a net good.

          1. The Zenome Project

  59. CPRM

OK, so I’m at an odd situation at work(well, not odd, just one I’ve never dealt with before). I started a new job coming up on a year ago. It is at a small town radio station. Prior to that, I was only self-employed for almost a decade. When I was younger working manual labor jobs, the lowest raise I got was 10 cents per quarter. I have yet to get a raise in my almost year at this job; however, a few months after I got the job, they dumped a guy to save money. I’m now one of their go to guys, and am training guys that are starting at my wage or perhaps even higher. But do to the way radio stations work, only making money selling ads, and my job doesn’t bring in ads, I’m not sure how far I can press. (I’m not on air talent) However, I do have the same degree from the same school as others there who are on air talent and make more than me, and I’ve made sure to learn everything I can about operations outside my purview. I’m just not sure how far to push negotiations in this situation.

    1. Heroic Mulatto

I don’t know what things are like at your place, but as a boss, I can say that for salary negotiations, I appreciate when an employee takes the time to outline what their current job duties and expectations are, and then provides evidence as to how he or she is surpassing those duties and expectations. I try to be upfront with my staff that if the budget allows for it, I will raise wages commensurate to their contribution to the success of the department. If there is no money to do so, I’m honest about that.

      1. CPRM

Thanks, as a self employed person, this is the same way I feel about my contract workers. It’s just given the fickleness of this field, ie the station only profits from ad revenue, and I’m not connected to that, but they seem to be doing a shitty job at selling ads (a problem with a client in my self-employment as well) I’m just not sure how to approach it. It’s not a giant kkkkkorperazion!!11!! It’s a small town radio station and I’m not sure of their revenue.
