It is with great sadness that I inform the Glibertarians.com readership of the passing of Almanian, a longtime Reason commenter.
After a lengthy battle with cancer, he succumbed to his illness this weekend, surrounded by family and friends.
I am withholding his real name out of respect for his family’s privacy, and I would ask that you do the same in the comments.
If you have any memories that you would like to share, please do so below.
ON TOPIC ONLY.
Goodbye, friend. You will be missed.
RIP.
I’m saddened to hear this.
/Dons sunglasses. Raises glass to Alamanian.
Somewhere he’s playing those bagpipes.
Thanks for letting us know.
*raises glass*
I would like to add, if I may, he had a great sense of humour. We always had a great time joking around.
/face palm. Now I’m messing the thread up. ALMANIAN.
Sorry!
He was the bagpipe guy? Then I’m sure I jokingly got into it a few times with him.
RIP.
Yes he was. RIP.
fuck. Who else wrote him in for president?
Rest in peace, Almanian. You will be missed.
I meant too, but forgot — ended up voting for nobody for president. Greatest regret of 2016.
RIP Almanian.
Damn, you’ll always be remembered Almanian. *pours some liquor in memory*
Almanian was diagnosed before me and when I got my diagnosis he was so kind and encouraging. I am sad at his passing and glad that he is now healed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.
How are you doing? I hope your treatment went/is going well.
Hanging in there. I developed side effects from the radiation but I’m going into the hospital Thursday and hopefully they’ll get everything straightened out. Thank you for asking.
RIP, man. Damn. Stupid cancer.
Fuck fuck fuck. As a fellow cancer fighter I was really hoping the best for him.
He was a great commenter. Guess they needed his snark in heaven. RIP.
I looked forward to every Friday Funnies when I could read his curse-and-*slap* posts and subsequent threads. He brought a smile to my face when smiles are all too rare.
I am sure he will be missed by many for deeds and actions worlds more worthy than that.
RIP. I don’t know his name to reveal it, but I know his posts, and they were a joy to read.
Fuck Cancer!
Hear hear.
He was a good guy and had a loving family. I had been talking to him recently about our splinter group here. I invited him, of course, but he didn’t have the time to participate. (Quite understandingly.)
He will be missed.
I assumed he was lurking here when he could.
Wasn’t close enough to him to have known his real name, but knew him well by his online handle and always enjoyed seeing him around. Sorry to hear of his passing.
I’m still going to vote for him in the 2020 Presidential Election.
I didn’t personally know him, but it was great to read his comments. Cancer blows.
Really sad to hear this. I’ll remember his humor at Reason. His posts were always good for a laugh.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.
He was one of the funniest guys I’ve never met.
He kept me looking at the bright side in a lot of stories with his humor.
I wish his family the best in this time.
Dammit.
::puts on bagpipe music::
::pours whiskey out::
You will be missed, good friend. Go with God into that next great adventure.
RIP Almanian!
Rest in peace. I always enjoyed Almanian’s posts. I shall raise a glass.
Sorry to hear that. RIP.
Sad to hear. Thanks for sharing this with us. Not sure if it’s worth all that much, but my condolences to his family. He seemed a decent sort.
Didn’t know him, but always loved reading his comments
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace.
Amen.
Damn…I was always urging him to carry on with the Almanian!/Cthulhu ticket.
He was a funny and decent man.
Now I am sad.
100 X This!
He was one of the good ones. Rest in peace, friend. I hope you’re greeted in the afterlife with a top hat, a monocle, and a salt mine with 72 orphans.
*waves tiny American flag for Almanian*
RIP buddy.
How can you feel like you really know someone, when you only know them through comments on the internet ? It says a lot about his personality that it showed so strongly. I always remember his exuberance and good humor, and missed him here. Something just this last weekend brought him up in my thoughts, and I was planning to ask how he has been doing…..and now this terrible news. Let his family know he had friends he didn’t even know about.
He was in my head pretty often for a person I only knew through comments on the internet.
He made quite the impact on a lot of us.
He did, that. Good man gone. I’ll hoist a glass to him tonight.
Damn, sorry to hear that. Best wishes to his family and loved ones.
@#*@*(
Seconded.
I told Almanian! that I was voting for him for president. His advice was, “Better check who’s the Vice President on the ticket.”
Great guy, he spread much joy from his comments, and he had a wonderful family. I’m glad that he exceeded his prognosis by several years so that I got a chance to know what his real life was like,
Vale, my friend.
Very sad news. I always enjoyed joking around with him years ago.
Almanian!/STEVE SMITH for President: They probably won’t make it any worse.
I know he had been fighting for a long time but you couldn’t tell it from his comments over at the old site except when he talked directly about it. A fine man and I’m glad to have known him, at least virtually in the commentariat. RIP.
Sad news. RIP.
This one doesn’t hit me as hard as J Sub D, but damn, it still sucks.
Sorry to hear this. RIP, Almanian.
Uffda.
RIP Almanian. I can’t think of anything to say that the others here haven’t already said.
I’m glad that I was able to know you as much as I could on the boards.
God dammit. I was listening to the pipes on Saturday night, wondering how he was doing.
RIP, brother.
Thanks, Playa, for letting us know.
Over at the Other Site, Almanian! has a spot in today’s PM Links and a link to his twitter feed for those that might want to recall his presence.
(If that’s too close to putting his name or otherwise infringing on his family’s privacy, Playa or the other founders, please delete or blank out this comment.)
That wasn’t too local for them?
Man.
RIP.
What is it in the human psyche that this hits so hard, even though I only know him (or any of you) through internet comments? Condolences to his family and friends.
after J Sub D passed, I quit reason for about 6 weeks or so. I have known firsthand people who died who hit me less hard.
J Sud hurt a lot, especially that we didn’t know the guy’s situation. This Almanian news is no better.
Damn, I was just thinking of that guy yesterday. RIP
RIP Almanian. My deepest condolences to his family.
Cthulthu in 2020
RIP Almanian.
My condolences and prayers for his family.
RIP. He was one of the good ones.
Man, I came here to read some links and laugh, not get all feely. It’s weird to think of you all as real people and not just personalities I made up to argue with, flesh out ideas or make me laugh.
Turns out we aren’t all socks.
RIP Almanian. I/we will miss him because he was a kindred spirit in both humor and philosophy.
Too soon, Buddy, too soon.
What a shame. I remember him as a good-natured and funny commenter. I’ll hoist a dram to his memory when I get home this evening.
Fuck cancer. I was hoping his radio silence was just due to therapy, and that he’d beat the shit out of the stupid disease and come back to us.
RIP 🙁
RIP to him. Like many, I remember him for his insightful posts as TOS.
Will be missed.
Thanks for the update, PM. Community and all.
I thought about him recently, hoped that no news was good news. RIP.
Some Almanian memories:
I got know him a little better at the other place. When I mentioned that I had been fired from the plastic bag factory, Almanian instantly offered to help me find another job. He never even met me.
My favorite joke from him: you can’t spell “who cares” without HR.
When I was at basic training, he posted messages from letters I wrote to him so I could share my progress with the rest of the gang.
I found out about his illness from a letter he wrote me. It really speaks to his character that he would take the time to write to a guy he knew only from an online persona.
Life is a fragile and precious thing. You never know when your time is up, so you gotta make it count. Almanian definitely made his count.
RIP
Thank you for that, Derpy.
+1 what Tonio said
RIP
He will be missed.
RIP,fun guy, too many friends dying lately
Saddened to hear the news. My wife kept an eye on his fight with cancer through Facebook and he gave it a helluva battle, earning every precious moment with his family. That’s pure heroism in my book.
May he rest in peace.
Goddamn. I thought he was just out of action because of treatment and would be back eventually. Didn’t know him personally, but his posts and conversations were always great (he even got stupid jokes about Ontario because he was up here for pipe competitions).
Feels bad man. Quod tu es, ego fui, quod nunc sum et tu eris.
RIP Almanian, May cthulhu take you into his loving embrace.
Very sorry to hear this. I cant say that I knew him, but he made me laugh more than a few times, and the words of you who did know him speaks volumes for his character. RIP
RIP, buddy.
I hate to use the word unfair; it’s usually childish.
I was just going through some recent photos of Almanian and his very young granddaughter, and that’s exactly what this is: unfair.
A man with so much love in his heart and so much to give, and he’s gone too soon.
Very sorry to hear this. I know Almanian only as a name on a screen whose comments led me to read more and more witty comments and the thoughts and screeds of more and more liberty minded people. RIP to a man who planted seeds.
Godspeed Almanian.
Fuck Michigan.
Fuck. This sucks.
Rich, Adans, WTF myself and others always had a blast on Friday Funnies mostly because Almanian! was there keeping the mood light. Almanian!: You hate the slavers without turning into a self absorbed prick. RIP, buddy.
RIP.
Also only knew him the way I know all of you. It is a loss.
Prayers and light for his friends and family.
I could be wrong – memory, you know – but I believe he’s the first commenter whose handle I remembered. (After Fist, but that doesn’t even count really) And that was because his style was so on point – witty and substantive in just a few words. I look at the reactions here and can’t imagine how hard this is for his family.
Thanks for the memories, sir. And I’m still writing you in come 2020.
Bummer. He was a good guy.
I have inquired about him a couple of times, always with a lurking dread that this would be the answer.
RIP Almanian. I always enjoyed reading your insightful and humorous comments.
[sigh] If anyone is doing so, please add my handle to the condolences to his family.
I’m going through old emails with him right now.
There was a Reason function in LA, and he came up with the name of the cocktail they served: The Rusty Woodchipper.
Yes, everyone got super hammered on them, especially me.
ooh, if there is a recipe, that would be a worthy remembrance of his own person and also the spirit of Woodchipper justice everywhere.
seconded.
RIP Almanian. He had a legitimately positive impact on the life of this random internet lurking stranger.
Amen.
For those of you Christians who believe in an afterlife and haven’t yet grieved enough tonight, here is this. Untitled Hymn
And for those not of that bent but want to hear/see a beautiful thing anyway while you pretend not to cry, there is this.
Thank you for enriching our lives.
RIP Almanian!
A nice pair of videos.
For Alamanian.
https://youtu.be/pd7tIlQKrTk
The world was a better place with you in it.
Dammit.
RIP Almanian.
Aw shit… RIP Almanian. May you forever cruise in the great beyond free of trouble and pain, revvin’ your Mustang and with a blonde at your side.
Sigh. Rest in Peace, and, additionally, my regards to all of you who I’ve met one way or another through H&R (and some in person). I appreciate all of the interactions I’ve had with you (fewer and fewer now that I am busy, but still), and am happier conveying that to you while you are here to read them. I need to work on saying those things when people can actually hear them.
RIP.
He added value to our lives; I can only hope we did the same for him.
He will be missed.
I was an H&R and FB friend with Almanian, and all I can say is that guy knew how to grab life by scruff of the neck and wring every last fucking drop out of it.
Devoutly Christian with a decidedly warped sense of humor, bagpipe playing, car nut, with a fantastic family and a fleet of fun vehicles in his garage, larger than you’d expect any one man to own.
He is the personification of Life’s Too Fucking Short and an example to the rest of us who don’t get our daily recommended dose of Hold My Beer Time.
Don’t rest, good Almanian, get some peace, but keep going balls out as you always seemed to do.
Damn! Very sorry to hear this. It sucks.
My sisters both fought cancer. Thankfully they’ve been cancer free 10+ years each. But, it can return even in the best circumstances.
He will be missed.
RIP Almanian.
Since he was a Christian, this is appropriate here.
DAMNIT! I just found this out (vacation out of data range). RIP Almanian. You are already missed.
