Tuesday Afternoon Links

Our beloved Brett and Swiss are busy today, so you get C-squad links instead of their usual champion-stuff. Buckle up, buckaroos.

  • On the importance of good customer service in today’s market.
  • More chaos and destruction. (H/T to SugarFree)
  • I know y’all hate Twitter, but who here hasn’t had a day like this? At least our new overlords will be clumsy…
  • PC Master Race culture wars. Which side are you on?
  • What’s wrong with having a first lady who doesn’t do anything? (Trigger warning: MSN + Autoplay… Clicking will basically give you cancer, is what I’m trying to say.)

Lastly, here’s some music to lift to; I’ve lifted to it, anyway.

Will he still bitch about Aussie game availability and cost?

Best part of that website his column was in. I still use “Pants on head retarded” on occasion.

Funnily enough, I’m elbow deep in trying to get my build together. I’ve read places like Logical increments and pcpartpicker, but am stuck trying to figure out what graphics card to upgrade to. Going from a 750Ti. Which was awesome and a power miser; but it’s just too slow these days for stuff like Witcher 3 and ARMA 4.

There’s a used gtx980 in my area for middle 200s. He claims he hasn’t overclocked it, but…you know. Alternately, there’s an open-box gtx1070 Strix for 420 ish, and I’ve seen RX 580s from 210 (4gb version) to 299 (8gb strix OC). Thoughts? Something else? I really don’t want to spend 420, but that sounds like a good deal for that 1070 in our miner-infested graphics market.

      Processor’s a Ryzen 1700x on a x370 Mobo. 16GB ram.

      1. Pan Zagloba

It’s a good deal, but 980 is a fine card and will get you far in Witcher 3 (assuming you’re doing 1080 – if you want 2K and 60, that might be an SLI situation). 200 would be hard to pass on for me – if you can find another, SLId 980s will get you more than a single 1070. Even if not, prices can only go down (right? right, guys? *looks at availabilty, sobs*) so getting a cheap 980 to tie you over for 6-8 months will do.

Rx580s IIRC are basically 1060-equivalent, and so below 980, whereas 1070 is slightly faster than 980 by 15% or so.

I personally gave up on new cards and will get buddy’s old 980s, if I can ever figure out why my PC refuses to let the second card run…

        1. Gray Ghost

Does your mobo support multiple graphics cards? I am a noob, and I didn’t pick out my new mobo for this feature—it does support more than 1 graphics card, provided they both aren’t too long—but I guess multiple graphics cards support isn’t a given.

I’ll go contact the guy selling his for 250 ish then.

          1. Pan Zagloba

It does! This used to house double HD6300s (talk about energy hogs). I think I had SLI working briefly but then I took one 980 out because fan was misbehaving and…
OK, right, that is why consoles got their start. I’ll start looking into IRQ numbers soon!

I used the 980 to upgrade R9380 and it’s really, really good. Gets over 60fps in BF1 on high graphics at 1080 if that means anything to you.

          2. Gray Ghost

Gets over 60fps in BF1 on high graphics at 1080 if that means anything to you.

            It will.

Oh, the halcyon days of trying to get games to fit with stuff like HIMEM and dicking with CONFIG files. I will say this about MS, as I fight with them about trying to transfer my Retail Win 7 Ulti, upgraded to Win10 Pro to my new build, Win 95 cut a lot of that crap out, and Windows 7 was a pretty damned good operating system.

Hilarity that, depending on who you look at, Win 7 gives you 10-15 percent better frame rates than 10. If I knew what I was doing, I’d go Linux. But I don’t.

          3. Pan Zagloba

I spent hours on Sunday trying to get windows to boot after installing a (Microsoft, not nVidia) driver update. In the end, I had to do “reset PC” thing from a stick.

If this thing literally wasn’t a Steam/Origin/GOG box, I’d be pissed. But I learned from trying to set up Win 10 the first time – all the games are on a separate hard drive from the OS. So I don’t have to reinstall every fucking game, just tell the DRM Storefront of Choice where the data files are located when I install it.

          4. Amashi

Modern Linux distros aren’t all that difficult as long as you don’t want to do anything too odd with them. But, while the gaming situation is a _lot_ better than it was a few years ago, there are still going to be a fair number of titles you can’t play on Linux for the foreseeable future, I think.

          5. Vhyrus

Unless you are running absolute bleeding edge tech all the way around, SLI is simply not worth the money. For double the price you get maybe 10-20% better performance, and’s thats only if the rest of your system can keep up.

      2. commodious spittoon

I’ve yet to seriously challenge my 970. I was debating going with the 980 (this was awhile before the latest generation) and I’m glad I saved the cash.

My next build in a couple years is going to be pushing pixels on a 4k monitor, minimum. I want hella screen real estate!

This is a no brainer. Shooters with the wife on the console. 4x/RTS on the computer. Bourbon for both.

    5. Fatty Bolger

I still don’t understand why the PC side picked Trump with boobs to represent their cause.

    6. CPRM

PC, but for practical purposes. In my line of work I need a hog of machine, so after building a decked out PC for work it just seemed stupid to plop down a bunch of money on another machine that my PC can already do the function of.

      1. Florida Man

I’m the opposite. I don’t even own a computer, so console is easier/cheaper.

      2. Zunalter

        Console exclusives are nice.

    7. Pan Zagloba

I’m all down for console gaming. I draw the line at “it’s a retarded PC, and you can’t upgrade, and controls are shit for FPS and there’s no Steam Sales and do you REALLY need 60 fps? Really? We barely got to a point of doing 30 semi-reliably!”

      1. John Titor

I’d be fine with consoles if all their shitty little habits didn’t get leaked into the PC market (it’s gotten better recently though). Oh, console controls aren’t as good as a mouse for fast paced first person shooters? Better make FPSs worse and throw in aim assist!

        1. Vhyrus

The only thing that consoles do better than PC is racing games, because analog controls are always better than digital for throttle and braking. Everything else goes on the PC. Period.

          1. Pan Zagloba

Nah, third-person adventure games like Zelda belong on the console. I mean, yeah, I could drag comfy chair into living room, position it just-right to have the same view as my TV and play it but why?
Likewise 2D platformers, and no, I don’t care about “2D retro puzzle platformer with rogue-like elements #4485”
Anime Bullshit games can work either way.

And I’ll put a proviso on racing games – if you can get 3 monitor setup while nailing at least 60fps, a wheel and pedals installed, with Atmos sound, PC is absolutely unbeatable. It’s just that would cost you as much as a car, probably. But at least it’s theoretically possible (I think, with 1080tis, although I believe you can 3-way SLI them).

          2. Amashi

            Fighting games too.

But shooters… I’ve been playing them since QW came out, and the idea of playing with anything than a mouse is painful to me.

          3. Fatty Bolger

Online shooters on the PC are great, except for all the cheaters.

          4. Amashi

I haven’t played much recently, but the last shooter I played a fair bit of was comp TF2. Cheating, at least detectable cheating, wasn’t tolerated, and because the games were organized and it was a fairly small scene it kept the riff-raff out.

        2. CJS

Man, I miss the Quake/Unreal Tournament LAN party days. https://i.imgflip.com/1bu888.jpg

          1. I always feel like I missed out on that. By the time I had a robust group of guy friends it was all Halo or CS:S. All the time.

          2. Pan Zagloba

Look what Epic Games has in the pipe!

Man, UT and Myth:The Fallen Lords were my first exposures into the world of online gaming (on a Mac no less!). I sucked but it was great.

          3. l0b0t

Unreal Tournament 2004 is, for my money, one the best games ever made. Thousands upon thousands of maps and mods, a robust community and hundreds of servers to choose from (SAP forever!). I mainly play BF4 but it doesn’t scratch that itch the way Vehicle Capture The Flag did in UT2004. The alpha of the new version is great, the mechanics are pretty much the same (my old Nostromo gamepad macros work just like did in 2004) but it really, really, really needs more maps and some vehicles.

          4. CJS

            Er. Mah. Gerd.

        3. commodious spittoon

Games ported with minimal effort to update the UI are my pet peeve. Dummies, we have a cursor.

      2. I only play Go and Scrabble, so I don’t need the latest and greatest computer out there.

    8. Holger-da-Dane

What side are you on if you got sick of the console shit, don’t ever want to run Windows again, so only buy games that run on Linux?

      1. Pan Zagloba

Linux and Mac machines are also PCs! Don’t let Microsoft redefine the term (I believe it came out of Apple I or II marketing itself as “A Personal Computer”).

      2. kbolino

Someone who thinks he should be able to control when and whether his shit gets automagically updated?

That has been my biggest pet peeve about Windows 10*. Oh what, you wanted to use that laptop? Ha ha, nope. Windows Update Module Installer or whatever the fuck it’s called is gonna need all your CPU for the next 2 hours. Oh, you have Win 10 Pro? How quaint. You still have to bow before Microsoft, peon.

        * = The amount of data it collects is much scarier, but it’s not in your face

    9. The Elite Elite

Why would anyone be on the console side? Other than for access to the anti-consumer move of console exclusives, there’s nothing a console does that PC can’t do better. I don’t have to pay Steam $60 a year to play my games online. I can pick what I think is the right balance between resolution, graphics settings, and frames per second in every game. I can build my PC entirely to my specific needs/wants. Some would claim console is cheaper, but it really isn’t. You can build a PC with similar specs for around the same cost, and when you subtract the $60 a year fee just to play your games online, in the long run it is significantly cheaper. As for easier, there are tons of guides on building a PC, both with picking parts and putting the parts together.

PC Master Race culture wars. Which side are you on?

Nvidia, unless AMD has Linux support for its video cards, in which case I might just take a look at AMD’s offerings.

    1. CPRM

My brother has used Nvidia, seems he has less integration and support problems than my AMDs. However, it seems AMD chipsets have a longer compatibility span (once the games are actually patched to work with AMD in the first place)

      1. DEG

Whenever I look around for hardware for Linux, which admittedly was a long time ago last I did it, nvidia comes up a lot as being Linux friendly.

    2. Pan Zagloba

I’m on AMD’s side. I’d like them to have a good card, but I can’t really justify getting any of their new offerings over friend’s used 980.
The fact that all their cards are being bought up by etherium miners isn’t helping. Pls AMD we need competition in graphics cards!
And get more companies on Ryzen train. We need competition in CPUs too!

      1. Gray Ghost

I’m in the middle of an upgrade (see post upthread) and this is squarely in my interests these days. I’ve read lots of bitching about Vega: that’s it’s both too expensive, not fast enough, and way too power hungry. Though I think that’s a holdover from complaints about the highest end AMD cards with water cooling.

Yet, how are the SJW complaints about “cultural appropriation” any different than those demanding ethnic purity?

    3. Stinky Wizzleteats

Between relatively sane and raving calls for genocide and martial law.

    6. Gray Ghost

I mentioned this when Dean brought it up in the Morning thread. Is “Analysis” the same as their OP-Ed page? I mean, it’s a guest column, and the Post is private property, but does this article not being on their Ed page mean that they are endorsing it or neutral about it?

I’ve been confused about the rules of journalism ever since Journolist dwellers like Weigel not only weren’t sanctioned for being on the damned thing, it actually helped their careers.

    7. commodious spittoon

    8. antisthenes

It’s not as explicit a call to violence as some of the comments here had led me to believe. It’s pretty delusional, of course. Par for the course, with all respectable people choosing to consider a mob assault by commies against a legal protest a “white supremacist riot”. If their goal is to try to make actual nazis sympathetic, kudos.

    1. Spartan Dad

I almost never post on Facebook and have it only to keep up with friends and family. I’ve now seen multiple posts from people, unfortunately including extended family, who have been posting that everyone is racist who is not speaking out about Cville… that silence or ambivalence is choosing a side.

I have been tempted to respond that I too am outraged by the silence regarding Antifa’s actions both in Cville and across the country, as well as the lack of response by local police. Doing so would immediately cut ties with half of my family. On the other hand, my wife would be furious with me so I better not.

      1. Vhyrus

Tell her shes either with you or against you. That should fix everything.

PC Master Race culture wars. Which side are you on?

AMD for CPUs, Nvidia for GPU

    1. kbolino

I’m not in the market for a new PC (just built one recently), but I’ve heard good things about AMD’s current CPU offerings. They dumped that Bulldozer crap and seem to have decided to compete with Intel on the mid-priced market again.

      1. They were garbage at one point but I’ve heard they’re coming back. Had I not picked up an i5 last year I’d consider doing an AMD build.

        1. kbolino

The last AMD build that I did and liked was in 2009, when they were still making the Phenom series which competed well with Intel’s mid-level Core offerings at the time (this was back when the Core 2 was still around and the i3/i5/i7 series just started). I tried another AMD build later in 2012 but I wasn’t impressed and sold it.

My current build is AMD, tail end of bulldozer architecture. Only real problem has been heat. Of course, I don’t get into all the number crunching. It does what I need it to and don’t care about much else.

“In counseling many white Americans who are against racism, one thing stands out: they are afraid to confront their racist family members and friends. They are against racism, but they also love their family and friends. I am often asked, “April, I don’t know what to do. How do I confront them without upsetting them?” Racism is complex in scope because it is both a mental illness and a value. In order words, it is a valued, sheltered, and protected mental illness.”

Hahaha, these assholes actually took the time to create a chart. A fucking racism scale chart. What this tells me is that no matter what white folks do, even the ones who try to help alleviate racial tension, they will always in someway be at fault and are a bunch of fucking racists.

    1. Mad Scientist

These idiots WANT racism here, there, and everywhere. And if they can’t find any, they’re happy to invent some.

      1. Count Potato

        This.

    2. John

I read the other day that Vox Day, someone I am not familiar with, says that if you are running a company and find out one of your employees is an SJW, you should fire them immediately. I honestly can’t argue with the guy.

      1. Rufus the Monocled

Without a doubt. Keep that shit AWAY from your business, family and life as a whole.

        Pure toxic hell awaits.

      2. wdalasio

Unfortunately, absolutely true. The truth is that they destroy every institution they touch. They aren’t interested in the organization’s ongoing success, but aggrandizing their politics. The only nit I’ll pick is that it’s better to find a way not to hire them in the first place.

      3. MTcordelle

You should read his book “SJWs Always Lie.” There is good advice in there for those who work around these demon spawn and do not have the authority to fire them.

    3. Rufus the Monocled

Wow. Citing black on black crime is ‘racist’ even though it’s statistically provable. Half of those aren’t even racist. And whypippo who bust other whypippo using this chart as a guide are idiots.

April can suck my white dick.

      1. Ed Wuncler

And oddly enough, the ones citing black on black crime are usually the black ministers and other members of the black community. The idea is how can we tell white folks to “care” about us when we don’t even care about ourselves? White folks aren’t selling us the drugs on the street corner or forcing the gang members to shoot up a block full of children playing outside.

Black activists never ever want to see the truth and live in a world full of delusions and victim-hood.

        1. Rufus the Monocled

Problem is they’re out to demonize whites.

          I think I’m gonna draw a line….here.

        2. tarran

White folks aren’t selling us the drugs on the street corner

          1. Pan Zagloba

I know this one – Lizardmen, right?!

        3. wdalasio

Black activists never ever want to see the truth and live in a world full of delusions and victim-hood.

Because they’re like all social justice cadre activists. They ultimately don’t give a shit about the ostensible target of their activism. Do you really think it would be a stretch for Herbert Kornfeld Shaun King to switch over to being an feminist activist, a trans activist or just a plain old socialist activist? The “oppressed” are merely a constituency for them.

          1. Pan Zagloba

            YOU TAKE THAT BACK!

Herber Kornfeld was an authentic mothafucka, you whore! How dare you shit on his grave!

The NAACP (in it’s current form) will always want there to be race tension or at least the appearance of such because their existence depends on it. The NAACP of the past did really good work for the black community but they have long outlived their usefulness. The nail on the coffin for me was when they went after school choice and sided with the teacher unions.

If you ever get a chance, you should read about the Chinese Cultural Revolutions because the parallels from then and now are frighteningly similar. Upon commencing with their orgy of violence, the Maoists who were mostly college students went into the museums and destroyed ancient Chinese artifact and tried to rewrite history. To them, the history was something that was viewed as oppressive and against the ideas of Mao and Communism.

      1. John

This is exactly what this is. The only difference is that they don’t have the ability to kill people by the millions, yet. The only positive thing is that the madness eventually broke in China. Surely to God it will run its course here.

“Most saliently in the context of the Google memo, our scientific educations almost never talk about the invention of whiteness and the invention of race in tandem with the early scientific method which placed a high value on taxonomies—which unsurprisingly and almost certainly not coincidentally supported prevailing social views,” she writes, declaring that the European Enlightenment was less a function of “objective ‘science’” than an outgrowth of “the rise of violent, imperialist globalization during the same time period.”

Most curricula, she elaborates, gloss over the fact that many European scientific advances during that time “were in fact collations of borrowed indigenous knowledge,” while “far too many universally call technology progress while failing to acknowledge that it has left us in a dangerously warmed climate”

Naturally Radosh has been trying to make up for his heresy ever since.

      1. John

I have never fully trusted any of the former commies who suddenly got religion and went conservative. I think you have to have some kind of serious personality defect to ever be a real communist in the first place. And that defect doesn’t go away just because you suddenly reform.

She is rather fetching. The tech companies are infested with fascists. DOJ needs to regulate the living shit out of them. I know that is not something you should normally support, but these assholes deserve it.

      1. Count Potato

As much as they deserve it, regulation isn’t the answer. The answer is free market. As the price of technology falls, let the established companies try to fight off hoards of competitors on their own. Then those with better service and policies will win.

        1. antisthenes

Eh, maybe it will be the last regulation that finally collapses everything, so you can have a free market.

      2. Gray Ghost

If ISPs and other tech companies want to be treated like public utilities, with anti-trust exemption, liability exemption from the content they carry, and exclusive utility rights of way, then they damn well need to start acting like public utilities.

      3. wdalasio

Honestly, I’d suggest the real answer would be serious IP reform. That would fuck the living shit out of the tech oligarchs more than an mountain of regulation.

    2. Number.6

      Hedgehogs? meh. Pricks.

    3. Vhyrus

Serious question time: At what point do you say fuck this shit? How much do you have to get disenfranchised, shat on, demonized, marginalized, and devalued before you get violent? Because if this continues, if people keep closing off all non violent communication cause it hurts their feelings, then violence is not only inevitable but justified at that point.

      1. Number.6

You say “fuck this shit” when there’s a plausible and reasonable catalyst *on a personal level*, ideally after a lot of other people have lost their fucking minds. Work hard not to be in the vanguard, it’s the best you can hope for.

      2. John

They are very fortunate in their enemies. If you were going to get violent and do something about this, you wouldn’t march around Charlottesville with Tiki torches. You wouldn’t say a word and varies well known SJW media and tech figures would start showing up dead. One of these days they are going to piss off enough people they are going to get a real enemy and a real terrorist opposition and they are never going to know what hit them.

        1. Drake

Most of them are too stupid to even realize the danger of what they do and how a real fight would end.

        2. John Titor

The day antifa pisses off enough vets is the day the bodies start to stack.

          1. Akira

Oh, I’m sure they’re itching for the opportunity to spit on some veterans just like those hippie jackasses did to troops coming home from Vietnam. The modern-day Left always wants to see themselves as the reincarnation of protesters in black and white photos.

        3. Spartan Dad

Unless if they have other children to care for, I just can’t understand why Charlie Gard’s parents didn’t leave a trail of bodies of all complicit.

Not antifa/SJW, but same ultimate shared totalitarian goal.

          1. tarran

Because they aren’t evil and recognize the futility of raising the black flag.

Most people don’t have the combativeness to attack a system that can absorb whatever they do to its members without even blinking. Most people look at it and say, “I can’t even make a dent in that” and just try to save whatever remains of their lives and to escape that hell.

It’s a rare breed that goes all John Wick on the monsters.

          2. Spartan Dad

We have very different definitions of evil then.

They actively prevented free movement of the family and killed the child. I see little difference between that and someone breaking into a home, restraining the parents, and executing the child.

          3. tarran

No, I don’t mean the doctors and social services people. They are fucking evil… full stop.

I mean the parents. Good people have a hard time flipping a switch and killing people. Even when they are wronged. Even when the wrong is depriving your child of life-saving medical care to make a political point.

If I were to bet on the parents’ mental state right now, they are emotionally exhausted and just want the nightmare to end. Going for revenge would just prolong the parents’ torment.

          4. Spartan Dad

I understand, sorry I mistook your wording.

I do think it’s not a good vs. evil hang-up with the victims but rather a learned culture that has removed any sense of independence or individual self-ownership. The same thing applies to self-defense which a lot of people now seem to be incapable of, even to protect their families from active harm.

My future brother-in-law comes from one of these families where they believe firearms and self-defense are inherently evil. I’ve since taken him shooting and made him understand he needs to be able to protect my sister instead of curling up into a ball if evil threatens. It’s a pretty incredible transformation to watch once that cultural bubble shatters.

        4. antisthenes

Like I said earlier, the antifas are radicals who hate everyone to the right of Stalin. It would beyond trivial for a group with a little bit of cunning to stage false flag terrorist attacks against the establishment right and corporate left in their name.

      3. Drake

        Eh, not yet.

Stop using Instagram, Google, and Twitter. Use Gab, DuckDuckGo, etc…

At some point we’ll have our next regularly scheduled civil war. But I’m not firing the first shots because a pretty girl has to change internet services.

        1. Vhyrus

I’m certainly not implying that losing your instagram account is cause to start up the woodchippers, but this is not an isolated incident and this shit has kicked into high gear lately.

        2. Pan Zagloba

Unless your company (like Gab) is explicitly set up to be alt-right, it will get taken over by SJWs.

Twitter didn’t start banning people right out of the gate. Their initial philosophy was “freedom of speech uber alles”. But SJWs worked inside and out. That’s why that “has-been conwoman with no influence” got on their fucking Trust & Safety Council (oh wait, she’s merely a “partner”).

Google didn’t start as a safe space for snowflakes. It took a lot of work to get them there over many years. So yes, go to Vid.me – if they ever get to 20% of YouTube numbers, same will happen. New Facebook, new Instagram – they’ll grow large enough to do this shit, or get bought out by people who will do it. And hey, libertarians aren’t allowed to complain because they’ll be hypocrites!

Or you can sit with few thousands racists and anti-Semites and trade “Don’t tread on me memes” (insert Glibertarians.com joke here)

          1. John Titor

You’re not really helping make a convincing argument that free helicopter rides aren’t the only way out of this.

          2. Vhyrus

I’ve been saying that for awhile now, but nooooo! I’m the asshole, apparently!

          3. Pan Zagloba

I am simple man from peasant country. Your flying metal birds confuse and scare me. I like good, natural method: Maxims and open pits.

Seriously, alt-right didn’t come because racism is a disease that white people don’t get inoculated against. It came about because all of fucking right (libertarians included) is absolutely worthless fighting SJWs. It’s all “no, no, we won’t demean ourselves, we have our precious principles, look, we stopped them here…for 10 minutes…once…and now they won, oops!” while those assholes keep gnawing and gnawing at a bone until they win.

          4. John Titor

Yes but the end conclusion of this entire argument always ends up at Pinochet and mass graves. I’m not entirely against a purge to show these morons what actual oppression is, but I don’t see a libertarian outcome from it.

          5. Pan Zagloba

There is no libertarian outcome I can see, because libertarians refuse to show up to the fights. Had the Reason/Cato crowd decided to fight SJWs the way they fought (and still fight) SoCons, alt-right would be way less appealing. But I don’t remember Reason being GamerGate Central (Cathy Young, bless her, writing couple articles notwithstanding), or giving Sargon or Razorfist a voice, or matching The Great Trumpening 2015-2017 with an anti-SJW Crusade.

If they had, they’d have pulled at least half of the young people who aren’t committed racists and anti-Semites (standard disclaimer: racists and Jew-haters exist, are part of alt-right and libertarians should not want them).

          6. John Titor

I more mean that purging leftists for wrongthink doesn’t have an eventual libertarian outcome, regardless of how the libertarians were interacting. And I don’t think how Reason/Cato act matters in the long run at all. They aren’t an avenue that those attracted to the alt-right are interested in, nor would they likely ever be.

          7. John Titor

I mean, a huge part of the appeal of the alt-right is the same pathetic tribal egoism that infects social justice. “You’re part of this group, this group is good, ergo, you are good.” That’s a psychological feedback loop that libertarians will never, ever have because it’s contrary to its core ideals.

          8. Pan Zagloba

They aren’t an avenue that those attracted to the alt-right are interested in, nor would they likely ever be.

OK, alt-right proper with its Jew fixation and “muh posterity is in teh preambles!” no.

But less idiotic ones, they could have. I only observed GG as a well-wisher and those people were desperate for any positive press. They adored Kristine Hoff-Summers and adopted Cathy Young as their grandma, and Milo got his start to stardom being the first journo to side with them (and crack the GameJournoList story). People who watch Sargon should be the demographic libertarians are fighting for tooth and nail.

          9. Rick C-137

I post Pinochet memes on occasion just because. Usually on libertarian pages where it will be understood as a joke as intended but every now and then seeing the shit that progs post I think “Rick, your need to step back from the computer or you’ll ruin your social media”

          10. Gray Ghost

Helicopters are inefficient. Do what the Argentines did, and use C-130s.

          11. Warty

            Needs more “cuck”.

          12. Pan Zagloba

I should have qualified with “if you do set it your business as explicitly alt-right, it’ll end up another Stormfront, a small pool of idiots no one wants to do anything with”, yes. I don’t disclaimer it enough, alt-right are dangerous and wrong, and if they had the influence of SJWs I’d be railing against them.

To the best of my knowledge, I’ve not used the term ‘cuck’ in writing, even ironically.

          13. Pan Zagloba

Wait, I lied, I did ask if it was possible for a man to cuck himself, after one of Trump’s “open mouth, step on dick” moments!

      4. mexican sharpshooter

Nah, its too soon for that. I figure they’ll keep this up until it finally affects enough people negatively in a personal sense. Maybe like one side shutting down a substation with a large enough metro area losing power on a particularly hot day.

        I’m just speculating.

      5. antisthenes

Calm down, Malcolm X. Yes, a lot of people hate you, want to strip you of your rights, make you a second class citizen. But
        1) there aren’t nearly as many of them as they would have you believe
        2) you haven’t had it bad as loads of other people in our history who still managed to endure without too much violence
        3) the civil rights movement proves businesses can be forced into non-discrimination via political means
        4) and at any rate you’ll get vastly more traction as an agent of love and positivity than hate and negativity.

Someone needs to be the voice of Reason here, and it might as well be libertarians. It’s not like the far right isn’t going to be any less apt to wipe us out than the far left.

      6. Bob

IMO the move to violent opposition is driven more by organization then by passing some threshold of unbearabity. The USSR was an inbearable shithole but without a way to organize a potent resistance it remained for a very long time.

The US was probably more free pre-revolution than now.

It’s like a market, when the incentives make sense people will fight. If a state seceded it would probably set off a civil war through the entire US since the gasoline has already been poured.

    4. The Zenome Project

More leftist book-burning and suppression, wonderful! Tell me who the fascists are, again?

    2. Mad Scientist

If you’re not clamoring for a drug war, single payer healthcare, or giving out bad nutritional advice, in what sense are you a first lady?

    3. Tundra

Michelle Obama gave these people the idea that the unelected position of FLOTUS is supposed to act as the nanny-in-chief for the entire nation.

      1. mexican sharpshooter

Hillary Clinton gave these people the idea that being FLOTUS and picking out the drapes in the White House is supposed to make one the most qualified presidential candidate. Ever.

      2. KibbledKristen

I believe that started with Nanny Nancy Reagan. She was like your grandmother. The bitchy one, not the nice one that baked things.

        1. Bob

          Or Eleanor Roosevelt.

Me too. Even though I have Publix now, which is also up there as one of the best supermarkets.

  33. Pope Jimbo

This is why licensing is so important. If you left it up to the crazies at the ride sharing companies, you would end up with maniacs for drivers randomly beating passengers. Oh, wait…

Once they stopped, Ghebregziabiher[licensed taxi driver] reportedly hit, punched, and twice used Mace on the passenger, according to the complaint. The rider reported being unable to see, but he eventually escaped from the car and grabbed Ghebregziabiher’s phone, according to the complaint.

When officers found the passenger, he “was covered in blood from head to toe” and “when…he removed his bloody baseball hat from his head blood poured down his face,” the complaint said. He was transported to a hospital. Nearby, officers found a bloody white bag with a crowbar inside, according to the complaint.

  34. Pope Jimbo

The family of the Fargo Nazi claims in followup story that they are getting threats from people who think they are Nazis too.

“It’s just been a great big headache,” Wieber [nephew] said. “I would say these people are motivated by the right motivations — Nazis should not have a welcome place in this country– but they’re targeting the wrong people. It’s friendly fire, in a way.”

You know maybe you should use this as a moment to reflect. Groups that make threats against people instead of arguing the merits of an issue should probably not be too welcome either.

    1. John

If Nazis have no place in this country, it is not much of a stretch to say those who raised them have no place either. Collective guilt sucks dude. You should have thought about that when you decided it was okay to decide who is and is not welcome in this country based on something besides their actions.

      1. F. Stupidity Jr.

It’s also tacit approval to do whatever you want to Nazis.

        1. Mad Scientist

And to anyone you merely label as a Nazi.

    2. Plinker762

It is probably best not to voluntarily involve oneself with a public shitstorm.

    3. Bob

I don’t know if they’re aware but the original NAZIs numbered millions, took over their own country, then a few neighbors, and mowed over half of Europe.

We fought them because of the wars and murders. The 200 or so people in Charlotesville are not in the same ballpark in violence or power.

    1. Vhyrus

So professional huckster, or false flag?

      1. mexican sharpshooter

        Why not both?

      2. Jefe Hayek

There’s a segment of the neo-Nazi movement that lives up to the socialist part of that name. I mean, these people are mostly unsophisticated knuckle draggers, so economics aren’t really an issue for most of them (other than, that black guy took the free shit that belongs to me!).

One of the guys interviewed for that Vice piece (he’s the round guy with black hair and a beard who formed the white student union at Howard or some shit) was spewing all kinds of bullshit about Jewish bourgeois and bankers, etc.

Rich Lowry is a dipshit, but he specifically said move the monuments to cemeteries and national parks. So I wouldn’t say he wants to erase them

    2. Bob

I live next to the Jefferson Davis monument. You would think the confederate president would be a target but it doesn’t seem to be. There’s a farmers market there on weekends.

I guess it’s because it’s too far from urban centers and blue enclaves. Another words it’s in a place where people are more concerned with things that effect their lives than with statues.

Which sort of sets that whole cliche about country people being wise with common sense. We I see people going mad about a statue I can’t take them seriously.

Trump decided caving was a bad idea after all
    https://www.yahoo.com/gma/trump-lashes-alt-left-charlottesville-says-fine-people-204005828–abc-news-topstories.html

“What about the alt-left that came charging at, as you say, at the alt-right? Do they have any assemblage of guilt? What about the fact that they came charging with clubs in their hands swinging clubs? Do they have any problem? I think they do,” he said. It’s unclear what Trump meant by the “alt-left.”

“George Washington as a slave owner. Was George Washington a slave owner? So will George Washington now lose his status? Are we going to take down — excuse me. Are we going to take down statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson? What do you think of Thomas Jefferson? You like him. Good. Are we going to take down his statue? He was a major slave owner”

    1. John

Good for him. He is exactly right. He is standing up for civilization and rational thought. He will, of course, be hated by all right thinking people for doing that.

      1. Not good enough.

The statue-topplers and road-blockers in North Carolina included a contingent from the Marxist-Leninist Workers World Party. Trump needs to demand that the Dems and the media and the activists disavow, specifically, all communist, Marxist-Leninist participants in lawless activity.

        1. John

I agree. But considering the sorry gutless nature of everyone else in Washington, I will take what I can get. But you are absolutely right he should have gone further.

          1. Turn this into a question of “I denounce all totalitarian socialists, whether Marxist-Leninists or National Socialists. What about you leftists?”

            Make them have conniptions.

            Also, see below.

        2. Drake

    2. Gilmore

It’s unclear what Trump meant by the “alt-left.”

ONLY WE, THE MEDIA, ARE ALLOWED TO INVENT CONVENIENTLY VAGUE TERMS FOR OUR IDEOLOGICAL ENEMIES

      1. Count Potato

To be fair, as bullshit a term “alt-right” is, at least it’s in reasonably common usage. Who says “alt-left”?

          1. Count Potato

Two of those are from 2016, so spread over time, almost no one. Meanwhile I hear or read the word “alt-right” at least a dozen times a day. In fact, someone on TV said “alt-right” while I was typing the previous sentence.

          2. Gilmore

I’m not disputing that its less-used. Of course its less-used. Because “Antifa” is one term already in use for “Alt-Left”, and before that it was “Bernie Bros”. It has been in use for a long time and was just a rhetorical term to identify the more-leftish-than-thou wing who considered Bernie’s Democratic Socialism too-accommodating of capitalism.

…. the recent hot-take interpretation on twitter is that it was just invented by Trump a few hours ago.

    3. Ed Wuncler

      Brilliant.

One of the few good things about the Trump Presidency is that he is willing to not only fight with the media, but he’s also willing to point out their hypocrisy and inconsistencies. I wish every establishment GOP member would learn for him and not be easily cowed by the media.

      1. The Zenome Project

There’s actually many good things that have happened in the Trump Presidency as long you don’t count the establishment assholes in the Senate. I just hope that none of the threats & actions he’s made to some countries lead to war, then I’ll really have a less positive view on him.

        1. Ed Wuncler

I hope Paul Ryan is primaried the fuck out of office.

          1. The Zenome Project

That would be nice, but I actually think the Senate needs more RINO cleansing than the House does. Voting out Flake/Heller/Wicker/Hatch/Corker next year and putting in nu-Righters in their place would be exactly the punch in the teeth that the GOPe needs.

          2. Gustave Lytton

Along with RINOs Murkowski & Collins.

          3. The Zenome Project

Murk isn’t up until 2022, and Collins in 2020. Getting the ones that you can next year would be a giant wake-up call to any remaining RINOs.

          4. Gustave Lytton

            Fair enough.

This is why Kid Rock would be a great politician.

    4. The Zenome Project

Trump’s authentic to a fault sometimes, but this is where being authentic is a wonderful, beautiful thing. Anti-fa needed to be called out, and he’s the only (mainstream) GOPer with enough balls to do so. Good for him.

      1. John

And I cannot see this costing him a single vote. The only people who are going to have fainting fits about it hate him anyway.

        1. The Zenome Project

Exactly. The Leftists and Cocktail NeverTrumpers that didn’t vote for him before will likely never be satisfied no matter how “presidential” he acts, so Trump should just narrowcast and do stuff that his base loves. It’ll likely get him more admirers long-term.

    5. John Titor

I am somewhat annoyed that he used the bullshit ‘alt-left’ term that some leftists are using to distance themselves from the crazies…while silently backing their intimidation tactics.

‘Radical/Extremist left’ would have been better.

      1. Pan Zagloba

Ctrl-Left is beautiful on multiple levels.

      2. Count Potato

        How about “communists”?

        1. John Titor

Nope, that’s worse because it allows normal leftists to distance themselves and also bellow about McCarthy. Making it about a specific part of the left is important because it drags them into the same game they’re trying to play with the right (i.e. everyone is Nazis because a few of you are Nazis).

          1. Count Potato

At least it would be accurate. So would be “Marxists”.

    6. RAHeinlein

Switzerland’s foreign ministry, responding to a request for comment from The Associated Press, said that it has been in touch with the Israeli ambassador and “outlined to him that Switzerland condemns racism, anti-Semitism and discrimination in any form. Switzerland has been strongly committed for years – as it is at the moment, for example, within its presidency for the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance – to raise awareness to the dangers of racism, anti-Semitism and discrimination.”

      How about this:

I honestly did a triple-take at this and still don’t know if its what the headline suggests:

Backlash over GOP bills to shield drivers who hit protesters

… i mean …. really? Its open season on running down Antifa? Or is this some wild distortion of something…

Republican lawmakers in six states have pushed this year for legal protections for motorists who hit protesters blocking traffic. Fairly or not, they’re facing an intense backlash now that violent images of a car ramming into a crowd protesting a white supremacist rally have been seen around the world.

The lawmakers say their goal has never been to incite violence, but to shield drivers from costly lawsuits for accidents they blame on illegal street protests. Bills in Texas and North Carolina to protect drivers from civil liability if they unintentionally injure or kill protesters remain pending, but their chances of passage appear dim after Saturday’s attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, which killed a woman and injured at least 19 people. The four other bills were voted down or failed without advancing.

still… for a moment there i was like, “Damn, someone’s got some balls on them”.

    1. MikeS

A bill came up in the North Dakota legislature to do this after those “water protector” assholes were blocking highway traffic during the DAPL protests. For the life of me, I can’t remember if it passed.

  40. Durham protester charged in Confederate statue vandalism

“”Don’t mistake restraint for inaction,” [the sheriff] said. “Had I ordered my deputies to engage a hostile crowd, there would have been serious injuries. Statues can be replaced; lives cannot.””

      1. Some of these people were probably social-signalling bystanders. Zero in on the hard core of agitators, there’s no way they can succeed in a mass prosecution.

        1. Vhyrus

They don’t have to charge everyone they arrest, but this to me is an implicit admission that government really is there to farm the tax cattle and nothing else, because all it takes to get something done is form a mob and find one guy willing to take the fall. That’s fine, but now I have no incentive not to form my own mob and go do whatever the fuck I want now. Is that guy they charged going to pay to replace the statue? I’ll bet you a shiny nickel he won’t. So we’re on the hook for all the damage these fuckholes do.

          1. Some of these folks (see below) are hardcore Marxist-Leninists…they want to be the Tribunes of the People and lead them to the promised land of communism….they want martyrs in the worst way…and I mean worst way…

Because he pointed out the two-sided nature of the bullshit in Charlottesville.

    MUH NARRATIVE!

    1. John

There are things to be angry at Trump about. But it is never the things the media is angry about. In fact, the more angry and crazy the media is about something Trump has done, the more likely he was right and is touching a nerve.

      1. The Zenome Project

The stuff you should actually be mad at Trump is covered by Ron Paul. It’s the stuff that’s actually popular among the media: unconstitutional missile strike, threatening sanctions on Venezuela, etc.

        1. american socialist

Eh the Venezuela stuff the media doesn’t like because they are sympathetic to socialism

  45. With in-depth research (lasting about a minute) I was about to find out more about the Workers World Party to which the statue-toppling woman belongs.

A sample of the party’s wisdom

“Why the DPRK needs a nuclear deterrent

“Since 1950, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea — north Korea — has lived under the shadow of a U.S. nuclear attack….

“This persistent U.S. threat of war is why the DPRK has allocated precious resources to become one of the world’s nine nuclear weapons states. It is now estimated to have around 30 such bombs — out of the more than 15,000 nuclear warheads in the world….

“If even those “in the know” here are speculating about what atrocities Trump could be capable of, what are the leaders of the DPRK to think? Isn’t it absolutely their duty to do all they can to prepare for the defense of their people?”

PC Master Race culture wars. Which side are you on?

If by “challenging their crown” you mean that over a year later they came out with a card that can does alright against their best-in-value top tier card, and sometimes competes with their mid-top tier cards at another 100W+ of power consumption, then okay.

Very hopeful for a stronger showing from AMD, but frankly, I am disappoint. If for no other reason, this lackluster launch means Nvidia can delay Volta consumer cards for another 6 months if they want.

  49. …and again…

“Some governments as well as peace groups are calling on the U.S. to step back from its threats to attack the DPRK. But they are also saying the north Koreans should “freeze” their nuclear weapons program.

“If the DPRK were to agree, would they guarantee its safety? What if the U.S. attacked anyway? What would they say — “Sorry”?…

“It is the right of oppressed people to choose the form of their struggle. As the Black Panthers put it, they have the right to resist “by any means necessary.” It is up to the oppressed to decide what tactic is best suited to their conditions. Those who come from the oppressor nation must not dictate how it should be done.

“And the same is true on the international arena. If the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have decided that the only way they’ll be safe from another U.S. attack is to have a nuclear deterrent, the best thing we in the U.S. can do is try to make sure that such an attack by the U.S. never happens.

“Those of us who live “in the belly of the beast” cannot put conditions on those living in countries oppressed by imperialism. Our job is to defend their right to liberate themselves.”

    1. But see how many media outlets run with stories about “white supremacistss versus Marxist-Leninist North Korean sympathizers.” It’s racist demonstrators versus anti-racist counterprotestors.

      1. Hyperion

It’s Nazis vs Commies is what it is. If they could just kill each other off, the rest of us would be better off. Of course the leftist media are on the side of the Commies, it’s sort of like being on their own side, so…

  56. Winded

Since I missed the auto sub-thread about clutches this morning, I’ll weigh in here…I’ve had the same Nissan Maxima for 20 years since the last time I was looking my requirements were a) a 6 or 8 cylinder sedan with b) manual transmission. I realize I’ll soon have to start looking again and my preferences are the same. It’s probably been 10 years since the Maxima last came with a manual option, and I think I’ve found exactly 3 matches among current new cars: BMW M3, Chevy SS and Cadillac ATS. All go for more than I’d really like to spend. So I might expand the search to 4 cylinders. Libertarianjoe mentioned his manual Mazda, and if it’s a Mazda 6 that looks like a good sized car albeit 4 cylinders. Any other Glibs have any recommendations?

          1. EvilSheldon

I love Subarus, but for the love of Enki do NOT buy a used WRX (or STi.) The primary market for the WRX is dipshit boy-racers with just enough money to swing the loan payments, but not enough to keep up with the maintenance. You do not want the car that they’ve done who-knows-what to for who-knows-how-long.

          2. Vhyrus

meh. I bought a used STi with some basic mods with 15k miles on it and it has been the most awesome and rock solid car I have ever owned.

I had a Hyundai Elantra rental (another enjoyable drive) lately and I was struck by how much less work the engine does vs. my ’97 Maxima. 70 mph is about 3000 RPM in that, and was about 2100 in the Elantra. Thanks (or blame?) CAFE I guess?

        1. Vhyrus

That’s more a product of gear ratios than engine. My STI is at about 3k at 70 mph and surely has no shortage of horsepower.

          1. Tundra

Yes, they are geared for max fuel efficiency, not smiles.

    5. Gray Ghost

The Mazda 6s, depending on trim level, and there are a gazillion, is a fun hot little car that you can actually carry stuff in.

Automatic trannies are just better these days—more gears, faster shifting, better integration with all of the other driver aids. And I love manuals with synchro. (You can stick needing to double-declutch where the sun doesn’t shine)

Grew up with little Honda coupes with manuals. The automatics are just better now. It’s an amazing time to be an automobile fan. Family sedans could run the ‘Ring at speeds that a Porsche couldn’t do 40 years ago.

Then again, I have a Prius, which is basically a golf cart on steroids. A very capacious golf cart to be true, but it’s totally an appliance.

      1. Tundra

Modern autos are great, but toooooooo complex. If you are gonna hang on to it, manual is still way cheaper to service.

      2. Winded

Part of the manual’s appeal is nostalgia (first car was a 4-speed Dodge Omni) and part of it is the anti-theft system. As in, how many car thieves can drive one these days?

Well, if you want to drive some autos, we have a Passat that is a great car. Fucking huge, really. 1.8 liter turbo 4 that gets awesome mileage but will still get up and go. They are cheap, too.

López Rivera was arrested on May 29, 1981 and tried by the United States government for seditious conspiracy, use of force to commit robbery, interstate transportation of firearms, and conspiracy to transport explosives with intent to destroy government property. López Rivera admitted committing every act with which he was charged, but declared himself a political prisoner and refused to take part in most of the trial proceedings. He maintained that according to international law he was an anticolonial combatant and could not be prosecuted by the United States government. On August 11, 1981, López Rivera was convicted and sentenced to 55 years in federal prison. On February 26, 1988 he was sentenced to an additional 15 years in prison for conspiring to escape from the Leavenworth federal prison.

U.S. President Bill Clinton offered López Rivera and 13 other convicted FALN members clemency in 1999, on condition they renounce violence, but López Rivera rejected it. On January 17, 2017, President Barack Obama commuted López Rivera’s sentence and he was released from prison on May 17, 2017, after 35 years in prison.

That’s not the plague that’s come to infest Reddit’s libertarian community, though, who are basically socialists who want legal weed and think social media accounts should be considered public property, because it’s a human right to have unimpeded access to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Does this tie in to HM’s Thick and Thin libertarianism? Or is it just totally outside and a hatch job on our ideology?

          2. Pan Zagloba

No, I think it’s a fair representation of Thick Libertarianism HM mentioned. It’s not dissimilar to “blood & soil” guy, maybe more openly prescriptive than he was.

      1. Zunalter

Positive rights are entitlements to certain goods or services. They impose obligations on others to provide those goods or services. Positive rights are one of the building blocks of positive freedom.

        *headdesk*

        1. Zunalter

          Gay jay, is that you?

        2. Bob

The obligation to provide people stuff or go to jail is freedom. You should have seen how much positive freedom the slaves had with all their obligations.

    4. Lackadaisical

Few libertarians apart from anarchists will dispute the need for some kind of criminal justice system, for example, but how and why the heavy fist of American criminal justice lands disproportionately on black lives is conceptually a matter of social justice, and not the power to coerce per se.

Are there really that ‘few’ anarcho-capitalists? it seems it is a significant portion of libertarians. Also, don’t they know it is ‘black bodies’ not ‘black lives’. duh.

And of course just because social injustices have been diagnosed doesn’t mean government policy is the appropriate medicine. Talking the talk of social justice might at least afford us more sympathy when we go on to argue against state-based solutions.

Ah, I see, it really is cosmotarianism. You can parrot the prayers of leftists all you want, they’re not gonna give up their religion.

But a basic income would remove the paternalistic and condescending aspects of status quo welfare: drug tests, having to prove you’re looking for a job, items proscribed from food stamp purchases, knowing looks from neighbors, etc.

Cato, Removing the true oppression from society: Knowing looks from neighbors.

      1. Zunalter

But a basic income would remove the paternalistic and condescending aspects of status quo welfare: drug tests, having to prove you’re looking for a job, items proscribed from food stamp purchases, knowing looks from neighbors, etc.

So, the best way to cure poverty is to make people comfortable in it? Gotcha.

      2. Bob

Is their any evidence blacks are harmed by the justice system disproportionately that wouldn’t also be evidence men are harmed disproportionately.

        I’ve yet to see any.

        1. Lackadaisical

          I’m sure they are.

But to actually quantify it is difficult, as you don’t know for sure the true difference in crime rates between communities. If you take ‘disproportionate impact’ to it’s logical conclusion you’d have to strike down laws against murder because too many blacks are being imprisoned for it compared to whites.

I do think poor people are more likely to be harassed by cops by dint of walking everywhere and generally looking shady. Or if they are driving, their car is more likely to be out of compliance. Theres all sorts of reasons the relative economic weakness of the black community as a whole results in a higher rate of interaction with the police, but it doesn’t explain all the difference. I do know that when taking into account the relative rates of police interaction, black men are no more likely to be shot and killed by police than white men.

          So again, therefore what?

          Adam Gurri‏Verified account @adamgurri Jul 26

Therefore the temptation to fall into anarchocapitalist arguments should be resisted, for one thing.

          Pragmatarian‏ @Pragmatarian Jul 26

How does that follow? You just acknowledged that -liberty depending on + doesn’t mean that the gov’s fatal flaws magically vanish. No voila.

          Adam Gurri‏Verified account @adamgurri Jul 26

You say “fatal” I say just “flaws”. Everything has flaws.

          Adam Gurri‏Verified account @adamgurri Jul 26

None of the people you mentioned thought the flaws were fatal. Hayek in several places argued for basic welfare policies, too.

          Pragmatarian‏ @Pragmatarian Jul 26

They all wanted an effective gov. -liberty depending on + doesn’t make gov more effective. AC is no more/less valid. So again, therefore…?

          Adam Gurri‏Verified account @adamgurri Jul 26

AC is absolutely less valid, if we cannot simply focus on protecting negative liberty because it is intrinsically tied to positive liberty.

          Pragmatarian‏ @Pragmatarian Jul 26

Are you conflating +liberty with compulsory taxation? Donating to Red Cross doesn’t count as protecting +liberty of disaster victim?

          Adam Gurri‏Verified account @adamgurri Jul 26

Sure it does, and that’s a fair point. But you don’t get robust property rights on the scale of nations without tax-funded enforcement.

          Pragmatarian‏ @Pragmatarian Jul 26

I don’t share your assumption of gov effectiveness.

          Pragmatarian‏ @Pragmatarian Jul 26

Idiot. Almost all the evils of segregation and denial of civil rights were only propped up by the state edifice. Without Jim Crow laws to control private transactions, racism (and along with many other -isms) quickly gets slapped by that invisible hand.

      1. kbolino

I try to be a little forgiving in my definition of libertarianism, but anyone who advocates that we have to turn the state into an abusive agent in order to go after private abuses falls outside any such definition as far as I’m concerned.

Life, liberty, property, speech, press, assembly, religion, petition — these are (but some of the) freedoms all enjoy, regardless of ideological motivations or social inequities

Murder, rape, assault, theft — these are crimes and the state can and should prosecute them, regardless of ideological motivations or social inequities

If you cannot accept these premises, no matter your intentions, you’re not really a libertarian

        1. Lackadaisical

I should point out that he says he doesn’t support state solutions to these problems… but then kind of goes on to support state solutions to the problems under the guise of pragmatism. I’m pretty suspect of that argument.

          1. whiz

Yes, if many people don’t go along with the solutions, who else but the state is going to impose them?

      2. Viking1865

        >Almost all the evils of segregation and denial of civil rights were only propped up by the state edifice.

The first bus companies in the South were private companies, and they charged a nickel. That was it. That was the rules. Pay your nickel, sit where you like. The Democrat government hated that, so they took over the bus lines and then segregated them. Same thing with street cars. Created by private businesses, who did not segregate, then regulated out of existence by a segregationist government.

        1. hayeksplosives

I have never heard this before. It kind of figures. Fits in with Milton Friedman’s statement that:

“The great virtue of a free market system is that it does not care what color people are; it does not care what their religion is; it only cares whether they can produce something you want to buy. It is the most effective system we have discovered to enable people who hate one another to deal with one another and help one another.”

I see people reacting to Trump’s statement that Washington was a slave owner in a typical disingenious fashion. I mean they are going after Calhoun and Taney who weren’t Confederates either. Also Washington did rebel to create a slave state since the US had slaves and the UK proper did not. Also these same people will bring up how American was created by slave owners and how slavery ws America’s Original Sin when it is not convenient.

    1. Winston

Also Washington and Jefferson being slave owners was not something that was ignored by British propaganda. Didn’t Samuel Johnson bring that up? George III accused the rebels of wanting to create an empire.

Princeton University said Monday that it will keep President Woodrow Wilson’s name on its school of public and international affairs and a residential college despite calls to expunge his name from those institutions on the Ivy League campus because of his staunch support of racial segregation.

      5. RAHeinlein

Not true in Princeton – there is a massive movement to rename the Woodrow Wilson school any many historians have 100% renounced his legacy.

Also they are going after Jackson who opposed Calhoun on States Rights. And Harvard Law dropped their shield because it was the arms of a slaveowner who wasn’t a Confederate either.

Also before anyone mentions preserving or expanding slavery well the Brits wanted the colonists to stay east of the Appalachians while the colonists wanted to move westwards. And who did that benefit in the South?

Not to mention some people argue that if America was still British then they would have abolished American slavery in 1833.

So they blew their wad too early, murdered countless millions of people, and despite that appalling lack of comprehension of their own philosophy, they want another bite at that apple.

May be a little unfair, given that commie revisionists are not their historical Soviet counterparts, but I seriously have to question the wisdom of idiots who look on the Soviet experiment as a simple failure of timing rather than a murderous fable on human fallibility.

        2. Somalian Road Corporation

Yeah, it’s ye olde “capitalism was required to establish an industrial civilization for socialism to loot” argument.

        3. kbolino

          Not enough shit to steal?

Not in so many words, but pretty much. Of course, there’s also the whole “agrarian” strain of communism, from Mao to Ho Chi Minh to Pol Pot, which sees the situation rather differently.

          1. Pan Zagloba

That one had to be invented from whole cloth by Lenin once he won a war and found majority of the country was peasants. One part of why it was called Marxism-Leninism (because, even though he was majorly revising Marx, he didn’t want to get saddled with Revisionist label).

        4. John Titor

The TL;DR version was Russia was too feudal and needed to progress more into a capitalist phase before they could transition into state capitalism, socialism, communism, then Worker’s Paradise. Standard Marxist view of progressive history, it’s one of the reasons that Lenin pushed the country out of war communism after the civil war with the NEP.

Marx thought the revolution would come in the industrial cores of Europe, primarily Germany and England.

        Try this one out: http://theweek.com/articles/712961/lessons-russian-revolution-100-years-later

Lessons from the Marxist revolution: not enough Marxism, needed to prog harder.

How long Jeff Davis and Co get the Oliver Cromwell/cadaver synod treatment?

How long until all Confederate Graves are dug up?

    1. Jefe Hayek

To be fair, Cromwell deserved it

      1. Stinky Wizzleteats

Isn’t he the one they executed after he was dead?

          1. Tundra

There is still a marker at Westminster Abbey.

        1. Jefe Hayek

          Dirty rotten scoundrel imo

Sanctus Carolus Rex Britanniae et Martyr and all that jazz.

          1. Stinky Wizzleteats

I get he was bad news but the hatred seems kind of out of proportion. The kings of the day weren’t great guys either.

          2. Jefe Hayek

I’m being a hyperbolic. Certainly digging up a corpse and putting it on trial is insane.

That said, I’m a high church Anglican, so King Charles I (the King Cromwell regicided) dying to protect that tradition from Puritans like Cromwell is important.

          3. Cavalier!

            Peasant!

            /Prince Rupert

    2. Urthona

You know I caught the Rasmussen poll on this and 70% of Americans believe in keeping the Confederate statues.

      I don’t think Democrats realize what a self-righteous echo chamber they’re in.

      1. Vhyrus

The problem is that the vast majority of people simply don’t give enough of a shit to take time to stop the progs, which leaves the real deplorables to do the job, and that becomes… problematic.

        1. Stinky Wizzleteats

Yeah, I care and it’s way, way down on my list of what’s important. For most people it isn’t even on the radar.

      2. MikeS

That’s where a friendly media comes in. They always have the bullhorn and so they make it seem like the percentages are reversed.

      3. whiz

So obviously 70% of the people are racist. And at least 18% of Hillary voters are (since 52% of the people voted for someone else).

  68. Winston

The leftist salami strategy is working wonders. At this rate Reason, the LP and most Republicans would endorse an out and out commie.

  69. “…I think what we did was the best way, and not just the best way, but the only way, because the state, the Klan and white supremacists have been collaborating…”

    1. Stinky Wizzleteats

      Hmm, that’s really a surprise.

      1. “Update: According to Workers World Party Durham Branch, Thompson has been bailed out of jail”

    2. Vhyrus

You know, we need to have a purge style fever dream day, where for just one day the world works exactly the way the progs pretend it does. If there are any left after that day we can then ask them their opinion.

      1. John Titor

I’d settle for an annual televised BATTLEU ROYARE.

  70. JD

Pretty sure Fearless Girl is a slaveowner, so Imma just go over and rip down her sculpture. And sell it for scrap.
