Happy Weekend. I think my A/C froze up trying to remove a swamp’s worth of water from the inside. It’s always something. Luckily, the pool guy came by and cleaned the shit out of the pool. I tipped him some cash because my wife wasn’t home and there was a whole bunch of debris in the pool.
My favorite link today is news that Trump called his AG an idiot and told him he should resign. Sessions, being a long-time elected Republican, got down on his knees and tried to “demonstrate his loyalty”. I’m just speculating on that second sentence, but I’m pretty sure its true.
Heard from a cynical liberal friend on FB: “Aung San Suu Kyi has more Muslim blood on her hands of any Nobel Peace Prize winner since Obama.” Savage.
Thank goodness bomb making is something that even talented amateurs mostly get wrong.
That’s right WaPo, abandon the coast! And DC, because its too close as well.

Um two data points is the new normal now? Ignore the past 10 years of pretty tame activity
I do love how fluid people’s memories are.
The Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe crew regularly lampoons people for claiming that the latest weather (usually a blizzard) disproves global warming, but with the hurricanes they went 100% full retard with the “this is all because of global warming”, not because of the frequency, but because of the strength. This is known to be the prediction of the models and thus it is glorious that it has finally been demonstrated for all to see. In fact, they’ve been getting steadily stronger for decades. Everyone knows this.
Except it isn’t true. There is no data to suggest that hurricanes are getting stronger or more frequent.
I know this because the SGU reported on such studies several times over the last few years. (as did others). Yet that didn’t stop them from simultaneously saying “see, I told you so” about the double hurricanes and criticizing deniers for claiming that record cold snaps contradict global warming. The original story was that the models showed that you’d get more hurricanes and more severe weather. Then , when they didn’t materialize it was that they wouldn’t be more numerous, but more severe (which makes sense, more energy in more warm water). But it hasn’t happened. At least not yet. But the SGU treated it as a flat fact. Despite their own reporting to the contrary.
I pick on the SGU because they have made it their mission to proselytize evidence based rational evaluation of the world. But when their team button gets pushed, they are just like anyone else. Team, team, team. And they can’t see any of it, because they bask in an echo chamber of their own construction.
Just like us! But at least we revel in the fact that we created an echo chamber so we could run around patting each other on the back for being almost as true of a Scottsman as I am.
Actually, one of the biggest drivers of increasing costs of damaging storms is rich people building in environmentally risky areas, like coastlines subject to hurricanes.
So WaPo wandered through some bizarre logic and came close the right answer (kind of). Either don’t build where hurricanes can wipe out your house/business, or bear the cost of rebuilding all by yourself.
Same as tornadoes. Lots of damage to homes and other structures now where nothing existed but woods and open meadows only 50 years ago. More targets inevitably equals more damage. When I first moved to MD, I was riding around with a friend, she was just sort of showing me around. I can’t remember how many times she said ‘those apartments, that shopping center, etc, were not there when I was a kid’.
Tornadoes and hurricanes are not a good comparison. Building in flood planes and on coastlines are a better comparison because it is inevitable that a flood or hurricane will occur where your house/business is. The question is how big and how bad? Whereas a tornado, even an EF5, affects as small geographic footprint. There is no expectation that a tornado is inevitable over a 100 year period like building in flood plain.
Fair enough, but I wasn’t trying to make that comparison. I was only saying the more targets, the more potential damage.
Building in flood plains is my local pet peeve. A major flood wiped out a huge segment of downtown a few years ago. The library was a total loss. So they rebuilt a couple of blocks away — still in the fucking flood plain.
When my wife and I bought our house in Pitt Meadows, one of the things we paid close attention to was the flood plain — most of the Fraser Valley was created by flooding over thousands of years, and areas of it still flood when heavy rains come. We found a house for sale approximately one block away from the edge of a known 500-year flood plain. The land rises almost 2 metres from that edge to the edge of our property.
If it ever floods here, we’re going to be on an island for several days, if not weeks.
My house in the midwest is ‘in the flood plain’. Well, no not really, but part of the property is. The county put in a drainage ditch, which sort of is a creek now, to prevent flooding, which I get to pay for. And maintain.
They didn’t blame climate change?
Yes they did.
Haha what clowns. Just ignore the past 10 years
In Floriduh, the state government insures most coastal buildings and homes, and keeps them at below market rates.
Only when the insurance companies bail. Which is often. I’ve been on Citizen’s several times, as my chosen insurer leaves the state.
The problem with insuring a place like Florida is that there are relatively frequent catastrophic events, which require very large reserves. This interferes with a model that requires taking some profits and paying dividends.
One would presume that California has a similar earthquake problem. The difference being the frequency of hurricanes vs the frequency of major earthquakes. Major hurricane events are roughly once per decade. Whereas major earthquake events are probably 5 times less frequent. Which makes me wonder if they’ll be able to pay off the next time there is a major earthquake in San Francisco or Los Angeles.
You should see the anti-gun employee training videos you get to watch if you’re a Washington Post Company employee. They’re very educational… about the people making them.
I’d love to see those.
As far as I’m aware they’re not available online (and since the sale to Bezos they might have been phased out/replaced as it’s not actually the WPC anymore), but just imagine something made by WaPo staff around 1994. They’re still wracked with despair over the collapse of the Soviet Union and anti-gun sentiment is at a relative fever pitch with the Bradys and the AWB… and gun owners (who are also supposed to be, in the context of these videos, you or your co-workers) are depicted as slovenly-dressed mentally unstable idiots.

Panic on Campus!
Critics are asking the Montana Board of Regents to reject a proposed economics research center at Montana State University, charging that the Charles Koch Foundation’s $5.7 million grant is an attempt to use the university to promote a “right-wing ideology.”
The regents, meeting in Butte for two days, heard criticisms from former Bozeman Mayor Steve Kirchhoff and an MSU student. In addition, Bozeman attorney Jim Goetz wrote an opinion column for the Montana Standard newspaper that was published during the regents’ visit.
———–
Goetz, a prominent Montana constitutional lawyer and MSU graduate, wrote that oilmen Charles and David Koch are controversial figures who fund conservative causes, often use hidden “dark money” political donations, and dislike government regulations.
“The grant actually compromises academic freedom by providing a perverse incentive to skew academic research,” Goetz wrote. “The University is being seduced into becoming a ‘delivery system’ for right-wing ideology.”
Goetz asked the regents to tell MSU to reject the center and any future Koch funding, concluding, “The integrity of the University should not be for sale.”

[But that aside,] we have to stop thinking about this in terms of who’s lying and who’s telling the truth. I would say in [murky cases], I would lower the punishment. That’s how you fix it. … The punishment for the boys in cases has not matched what the actual behavior has been, and we so quickly jump to he was a sexual predator, he needs to be expelled.
[If we] expel the guy, he’ll join the alt-right chorus on the internet and talk about how women lie about rape and women ruin men’s lives. … That’s exactly where they go every single time. I mean really, in my reporting—no question, they immediately get on the [men’s rights activism] trip and they immediately get into those chat rooms. … When it is a situation like the ones that have been described, you need to look at re-education.
Let’s be reasonable. Rather than allow these malcontent rapists to run around telling their sob stories about being victimized by the system, let’s re-educate them.
Sure, we might not be able to prove they did anything wrong, but who ever said anything about being innocent until proven guilty? If we just punish them a little, it’ll totally be cool with everyone, right?
An innocent guy being forced to attend reeducation classes will be just as pissed I would think.
Goddammit, can’t they wait until I get out of the system?
we have to stop thinking about this in terms of who’s lying and who’s telling the truth. I would say in [murky cases], I would lower the punishment.
I note that, along with discarding any concern about learning the truth, we are also discarding the option of not punishing the accused.

Do the commies really want a civil war or do they think they can bully everyone else into political silence?
Kansas City police ordered armed antifa groups and others to remove ammunition from their weapons and from their possession at a rally Saturday morning in Washington Square Park.
They think the bullying will work.
It would be the shortest civil war in history.
I’m gonna guess they can handle their firearms about as well as Somali militiamen. Which is to say, they can’t shoot for shit.
My guess is neither Antifa nor the police can shoot for shit.
+ a whole shitload of hurt innocents and dogs
Neither could Iraqis, and that did very little to staunch casualties from OIF. Mainly because foreigners were helping the Iraqi opposition, with things like IED production, tactics, and supplies. The same thing will happen here if our political paramilitary LARPers get to shooting and bombing each other.
Unless they can get their hands on things like mortars, rockets, and artillery shells to make IEDs from, I’m not too worried about that.
Think National Guard or USA armories are all that well guarded? During a no-shit insurrection?
Or heck, the US has a tremendous length of coastline and land border. Doubt it’s all that hard for a motivated party to ship that stuff in.
The point is, if relations between political factions in the U.S. degenerate to where lots of them are shooting at each other, other nations are going to step in and stir the pot too. So how well or poorly Pajama Boy shoots hir assigned AR or AK, isn’t matter that much in the eventual bloodletting.
It’s not going to be like a Matt Bracken fantasy, where the rednecks and Oathkeepers are all going to organize and turkey shoot antifa.
Reserve and National Guard armories have their units organic weapons. They rarely have any ammo to speak of.
+1 “bang bang” training
(but don’t check the lockers too closely)
They aren’t going to know how to assemble effective IEDs, either. In Iraq there were fuckers who had been doing that kind of thing for a long, long time, plus experts from the Iranian military.
We could barely get into our own weapons vaults… you think Pajama Boy is going to break in and take racks with rifles locked in them, and a safe full of bolts?
And use what for ammo…?
Yeah actually, I do. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/weapons-missing-break-in-mass-reserve-armory-fbi-article-1.2435925 At least the first couple of times until things get consolidated and hardened.
Especially if things have gotten to the point to where both sides are taking more than occasional potshots at each other. Also, is 5.56 un-obtanium as this point? I can see that 203/320 bombs, or anything larger, aren’t lying around, but you guys think that getting small arms ammunition is going to be a sticking point for either side?
For Chrissake, the cartels in Mexico have gunfights with pintle-mounted .50s. In a country where possessing military ammo is very much illegal. How are they able to do it? Money. Which the guys funding antifa have a bunch of. Or are all of those professionally printed signs, lawyers on retainer, buses to ship them throughout the country, and other supplies just materializing out of thin air?
But it’s not necessary to rob the NG to arm the Pajama’d. Again, other countries are going to come here to play if things break down enough. They did in Northern Ireland, they did in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Philippines, Mexico, most of the Latin/South America insurgencies of the 60s-80s.
Things will have to get a lot worse for that to happen; I’m just taking issue with the idea that antifi won’t be a threat because guys who join them are wimps who won’t be able to shoot straight.
Agree with G.G. here. A group of douchey college kids can easily be co-opted by a bunch of people with real anger.
Didn’t that happen in Berkley/Oakland a year or two ago where the original protesters claimed a bunch of goonish outsiders got wind of things and “joined” in on the protest and started the violence? It’s too easy to call that an excuse, more likely Antifa has already been co-opted and the douchey college kids are merely useful idiots providing them cover.
This is what happened in Iran in ’79 – a few loudmouth college kids took a bunch of hostages and then realized they were in over their heads just two days into it and started slowly releasing them. Within a week they had already been co-opted by fundamentalist Muslims with real anger and after the second week there was only one or two of the original group of college kids left. The fundies were ready to commit long-term, the college kids lost interest real fast.

I think that’s what makes me really, really hate them – the fucking masks. So cowardly. I mean, I wouldn’t like them anyway, but I have such a deep, burning hatred for them.
That’s how smart cities get them – by banning the masks, not the weapons.

Why, Tundra, why? My nuts can’t take anymore!
I suppose you don’t want to know that the fucker is suspected of employing the old throw-down piece gambit, huh?
The Judge said something along the lines: “I don’t know of a heroin dealer that does not have a gun”.
I’m staying out of this shitshow because I really don’t know all the info. It does seem to be stinky though.
I don’t know of a heroin dealer that does not have a gun
To do the math:
Suspected heroin dealer = person with a gun = legit target for a cop. So, the cops can shoot anyone they suspect of being a heroin dealer, right?
Not right.
When said suspected heroin dealer tries to run them over, smashes the shit out of their car with his car, and then leads the cops on a 85 MPH chase through traffic, I have less of a problem with it.
Here’s the judge’s findings and verdict, FWIW: https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/stltoday.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/5/7b/57b2d12c-83d8-53a0-ba1f-18b659a7e569/59bbe0a450230.pdf.pdf
That said, I disagree with the judge’s statement that heroin dealers are always armed. I thought Freakonomics, for one, showed evidence that the dealers themselves frequently aren’t armed (as it enhances any drug case penalties when they get arrested, and they usually get arrested). They’re usually guarded by guys with guns though. I also found it problematic that the same touch DNA evidence that showed the deceased’s DNA on the dope, and the cop’s DNA on the revolver allegedly found in the car, did not show the deceased’s DNA on the gun. Which is just damned sloppy.
Still, fleeing violent felon, with his hands not immediately where the cop can see them at the conclusion of a high speed chase with vehicle collision (and I don’t think the cop’s non-shooting partner disproved that part of the testimony), usually equals enough reasonable doubt to deny a conviction for murder.
For the cops anyway. Don’t you dare try this at home.
Judge also didn’t know anyone who voted for Trump.
Must go back and look at boobs again to anesthetize…
The victim’s alleged gun had Officer Shooty McMurderface’s DNA on it, but not the victim’s. Weird, huh?

Oh, thankfully I’m not going anytime time. New training coordinator decided that St Louis is a great location since it’s in the middle of the country or some such reason.
Damn it, now I want Bosnian food.

I can see the argument that you’re off the market, so you tend to let yourself go since you needn’t attract anyone.
The WAPO article sounded like it was idiotic (I didnt read it of course) but they may have hit on something for the wrong reason. Get rid of subsidized flood insurance and people will stop building on the coast. And that is a good thing.
Or, more realistically, they will build replaceable buildings.
For an example, compare Nag’s head to Duck.

I’ve been thinking today: were I the hypothetical libertarian Prime Minister of Japan, would it be consistent with the NAP to attack DPRK preemptively now? It might just be more bluster, but the Norks have in the last few days to nuke Japan and fired a missile over their heads. It seems to me that, if the other party has made what you believe to be a credible threat to attack, that you’re justified in attacking first, particularly if the threatened attack is nuclear. I wouldn’t want to wait to find out if the Norks were serious or not.
Of course, this is all hypothetical (with apologies to Glibs who are currently living in South Korea, Japan, Guam, etc., for whom I’m sure it’s not hypothetical). As I understand it, I don’t think Japan has the capability to eliminate DPRK as a threat; China and Russia likely wouldn’t stand by while DPRK was attacked; and South Korea would like suffer most / all of the retaliation from an attack on DPRK.
Thoughts?
I would say the the NAP is off the table when somebody is actually shooting at you.
A saturation nuclear attack on DPRK would be justified. China blinks and their satellite state is nuclear slag.
The question is what response they would have to that.
It might be against the NAP if we launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike on NK and fry a few million innocent Koreans. However, I have no problem at all at this point, putting a bullet in the head of that psychopath. Which I also gamble will rapidly deescalate the situation.
The issue then becomes the uncertainty of the follow-up. The shooting may trigger the war plans because there’s no one in a good position to say “stop”.
There’s plenty of justification for arming up at this point, which may or may not be enough of a deterrent.
I think Japan totally has a valid casus belli against NK, but just because a nation would be justified to go to war does not mean it would be wise to do so. For the reasons you listed, I don’t think it would be wise for Japan to do so at the present moment, but it is wise for them to begin to discretely try to change the calculus to tilt things in their favor, especially by strengthening their military (with an emphasis on missile defense) and bolstering alliances/cooperation with other affected nations. If anything is done about NK preemptively, it shouldn’t be done unless SK is entirely on board.
But I’m not a libertarian, so I can’t properly answer the question of what a “hypothetical libertarian Prime Minister” should do from a philosophical perspective.
especially by strengthening their military (with an emphasis on missile defense and nuclear weapons)
Hey, the neighborhood has really gone downhill.
Well, MAD is one form of missile defense…
NAP is fully compatible with self-defense. If someone is taking potshots at your house, even if they haven’t hit anyone yet, you can fire back IMO.
I think any country that does anything would have to get SK involved beforehand. As you say, they are the ones who take the most retaliation.
As for a libertarian leader? I think having missiles launched over your land is aggression, and could be used to retaliate. I assume it would be done in accordance with their constitution.
To start, I think Japan would be completely justified in shooting down any missile that arcs over their territory.
Japan would be completely justified in shooting down any missile that originates in DPRK.
But shooting down missiles is easier said than done.
I don’t think Japan has the capability to eliminate DPRK as a threat; Currently correct, though if anyone has a turnkey nuclear deterrent, it’s Japan.
China and Russia likely wouldn’t stand by while DPRK was attacked; What exactly, do we think either would do? Would either country go to war with the U.S. if the U.S. or one of its allies attacked NK? I don’t see it, even though I think it’s very likely given the technology progression of NK’s nuclear deterrent and missile technology that NK has at least ex-employees of Energomash on the payroll, if not outright under-the-table technical assistance. We probably wouldn’t like either country’s responses in other areas though.
Similarly, and I’m cognizant that this is the exact type of thinking that made WW1 as bad as it was, we could state that we would treat any attack from NK as having originated from China, and respond accordingly.
and South Korea would like suffer most / all of the retaliation from an attack on DPRK. Entirely likely, given the conventional tube and rocket artillery near their DMZ. And then there’s WMD payloads for that artillery/rocketry.
All this NK H-bomb deterrent means is that the price just got a lot larger that NK can charge the world for not propping up its regime. If the Nork regime falls, Un and his generals will definitely be killed, probably in very inventive ways. Accordingly, he has no incentive not to use every means at his disposal to incentivize the West to give him enough money to keep things running. And with H-bombs, he can now inflict horrific economic damage on other countries besides South Korea.
I was thinking more of Japan acting alone to defend itself, how would China or Russia respond?
What do you see them doing, Chipping? JSDF could try to bomb Pyonggang. They’d lose quite a bit of their a/c in all likelihood, and Kim would probably retaliate by flipping an EMP device or two over Japan. Which would cause a great deal of economic damage, yet not be so devastating that the US would automatically nuke the living shit out of NK.
“But nobody died! How could you be such a monster and kill innocent people?! The US is the only country to use nuclear weapons against people! Three times!” Rinse/repeat.
He’s got H-bombs now and he can probably send them high enough. Probably not the best nukes for the job, but they’d probably do to cause a good chunk of one year’s GDP for Japan in economic losses.
Again, purely hypothetical, as I don’t think Japan has the capability to eliminate NK as a threat. My question was more philosophical: would Japan currently be justified (and in accordance with the NAP) to preemptively attack NK?
I think it’s time for Japan to turn “could develop nuclear weapons at a moment’s notice*” into “could launch nuclear weapons at a moment’s notice” if nothing else to show NK that they mean business.
* = This was true when Japan still had nuclear power, I don’t know the current status.
Ignoring the general environment of the modern world, the JSDF ain’t got shit in response to the Norks. They can nuke fairly fast, but in their current state it’s not that impressive.

Jesus Christ they live in an alternate world.
I’m sure the deplorables will vote for her next time if they just keep calling them that.
Once you’ve convinced yourself that socialism is an improvement over what we have now, there’s nothing you cannot convince yourself of. Why would Trump or any of this ‘deplorables’ be upset about the popular vote, which does not count, and cannot be removed by any legal means imaginable.
Keep it up please.
what?
That’s like setting a regular season wins record then getting swept out of the playoffs.
Or winning Game 1 100-0, then losing the next 4 in a row 1-0. Yeah, you scored more runs but that’s not what matters.
Hillary Clinton absolutely humiliated Donald in the popular vote. It was record setting.
Hmmm…to the records!
Clinton got 2.09% points more than Trump, the average difference between the R and the D over the last 100 years was…10.64%.
Fun fact: the president with the largest margin of victory over the last 100 years was Warren G Harding (26.23%), whose campaign slogan was “Return to normalcy”.
Shortest normalcy ever.
Wow, kind surprised it wasn’t Reagan over Mondale.

Never fear ladies, I’m reaching that age before too long.
My grandparents moved into an independent living facility before my grandfather died, My grandmother was making snide comments about how many women one of the men there had lived through and then immediately moved on to another.

If I’m ever in that situation, I’m not thinking about one woman any longer, I’m going to do my best to have my own harem before I die.

I’m way past the daughter thing, so I want to just skip to the more sex thing than anyone is comfortable admitting thing. Actually maybe I’m lucky in that I have a wife who is pretty much up for it as much as I am. Guess I have to talk to her about that harem… I’m waiting until next week. Next week for sure.
That’s precisely why Imma move out to the bush someplace when I get withered. Fuck’s sake! I had to give up Facebook a few years back because of the lonely middle aged cohort. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be stuck in a cage with constant “presenting”.

Apologies if already covered today AND TW (TOS), LP paid party memberships decline in 2017:

It’s a Doherty story so it’s pretty detailed. tl;dr: numbers went up 60+% last year and are down 24% this year.
One insider said “It is possible that the national party messaging is turning people off.” Ooh, sounds promising.
But then, he says “Some pronouncements from the party’s national office may come across as ‘our preaching that we are morally superior to you voters and, guess what? That doesn’t win votes.'”
I’ll save the rest of you the trouble of looking–the phrase “libertarian moment” was not used in this article. Although, to be fair, that was never Doherty’s thing to begin with.

So the big question: how do they taste?
I once got a behind the scenes tour at a major zoo with snow leopards as the main focus. They are not as big as lions or tigers, but are still incredibly cool to behold up close. I think I was able to pet them through the chainlink but this was over 15 years ago, and I really can’t even remember anymore.
I do remember that they were kept on birth control which I found kind of strange since they were endangered. Apparently though there is only a limited amount of legit places that will take them so that hampers captivity breeding.

How many times will we rebuild Florida’s cities, Houston, coastal New Jersey, New Orleans and other population centers ravaged by storms lethally intensified by global warming? At what point, surveying the devastation and knowing more is inevitable, will we walk away, leaving behind vast coastal dead zones? Will we retreat even further into magical thinking to cope with the fury we have unleashed from the natural world? Or will we respond rationally and radically alter our relationship to this earth that gives us life?
…
We are entering this final phase of civilization, one in which we are slashing the budgets of the very agencies that are vital to prepare for the devastation ahead—the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, the Federal Emergency Management Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, along with programs at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration dealing with climate change. Hurricane after hurricane, monster storm after monster storm, flood after flood, wildfire after wildfire, drought after drought will gradually cripple the empire, draining its wealth and resources and creating swathes of territory defined by lawlessness and squalor.

Top result from the google machine on deaths from natural disasters:
***
The number of deaths caused by natural disasters (22,452) is almost 80 per cent below the average for the decade (97,954), much lower than the peak years of 2004 (242,829 deaths), 2008 (235,272 deaths) and 2010 (297,728 deaths)
***
That’s from 2014. From 2015, we have:
***
Storms killed 242,000 people, mostly in poor countries, while heat waves accounted for 148,000 deaths. Asia saw the highest number of human losses with 332,000 deaths. Almost half of them were caused in 2008 by Cyclone Nargis, the worst natural disaster to hit Myanmar.
***
Number of people who die each year: about 50 million. Natural disasters account for less than 1% of that. The number one killer? Poverty.
“We are entering this final phase of civilization”
We are definitely entering some phase of intellectual heat death if everyone is as dumb as you, Crissy Poo. Take your meds, just lie down and go to sleep, it’s all OK.
Exactly why we need to spend lots of money to defeat it!
I think it would be impossible to define the derpiest person in the world but Hedges has to be in the Hall of Fame.
Will we retreat even further into magical thinking to cope with the fury we have unleashed from the natural world? Or will we respond rationally and radically alter our relationship to this earth that gives us life?
Now, about this “magical thinking”….
I really despise that “we” style of writing. Stop being a pussy and say “you” if that’s what you mean. If you really mean “we,” stop being a pussy and practice what you preach.
It’s pretty fucking annoying. During a minimum wage discussion, a “progressive” kept asking how I could possibly support the idea of “paying people even less than we already do”. Um, “we” don’t pay people anything; employers pay their workers a wage that they agreed on through contract. You’re an unconnected party; you have no say whatsoever in that matter.
It’s just linguistic trickery to make it seem like everything is subject to the whims and fancies of the democratic process.
