As Droopy used to say, “Hello all you happy people!” SPO and I are happy. Not alert, though, after two concerts in a row, the second being at a venue which serves many, many, many mixed drinks. Being ecologically aware, we would not allow them to go to waste. And we didn’t.
So, that excuse explanation given for my lame-ass performance this morning, let’s see what’s in the news:
Apparently James Comey is also a white supremacist. The modern college campus is a marvelous thing to behold.
I am getting nightmares about the 2020 presidential election already. I’m old enough to remember 1988, where the important issue that dominated the debate was… flag burning. Which prevented discussion of anything actually important. For 2020, the debate is shaping up to be about football players’ posture.
Allowing (not requiring) colleges to have due process as part of disciplinary hearings will apparently make life easier for STEVE SMITH. Clearly Betsy DeVos is in favor of rape. Time for outrage! The unexplained part is why accusations of criminal activity should be adjudicated by colleges rather than, oh, I dunno, courts?
I’m not quite sure what to make of this. Other than, if scientists can figure out the cloning thing from prehistoric DNA, I have a little list…
One evening in 1978, I was driving home when I heard something on the radio that caused me to pull over and listen. Music of a sort that I had never heard before (is it bluegrass? is it jazz?), played with what sounded like impossible skill. I sat there for 20 minutes waiting for the announcer to recap the song and band titles, and finally found out that it was a song called “EMD” by a group called The David Grisman Quintet. I rushed out to buy their eponymous album, then proceeded to wear it out. The stars were David Grisman, he of mandolin madness, and Tony Rice, who started with Clarence White’s skills (and guitar!), then took it to another level.
Anyway, here they are, many years later, playing as a duo. This killed two hours of my morning. I could not stop listening.
“In response, the protesters chanted, “White supremacy is not a debate!””
Wow, that’s stupid.
You know what else wasn’t a debate?
Anything ‘moderated’ by Donna Brazile?
The “discussion” my wife and I had last night?
This gave me a laugh. The fucking left has been working for decades to produce these little monsters and they have succeeded. Enjoy your creation Dr. Frankenstien. I am popping up some corn to munch on while I watch them throw you from the manor walls.
It’d be funny if all they were doing was eating their own but that’s unfortunately not the case.
You know why they won’t be eating us? Because a bullet through the forehead shuts up stupidity forever. Don’t even have to shoot all of ’em, just the slowest learners.
“The protesting students issued a statement saying Comey “represents an institution diametrically opposed to the interests of black people domestically and abroad. While his tenure at the FBI has finished, his impact on our community remains.”
In particular, they faulted him with propagating what some officials have called “the Ferguson effect” — a theory that the rise in violent crime is due to police being fearful of facing public criticism for being too violent, and therefore avoiding confrontations with criminals.
One student, 17-year-old Dave Cassell, said he agreed with the message of the protesters.
“It makes sense due to the racial history between the FBI and black people,” Cassell said.”
Hitler: We have to kill the Jews because Treaty of Versailles.
Left-wing student: Makes sense. Where do I sign?
Note the lack of internal logic:
Sentence 1 =”Its the institution, not the man!”
Sentence 2 = “It is the man, not the institution!”
So I asked a question last night about when femme as a descriptor became a thing.
Sure it’s probably been around for decades, but in the past year or so it seems as though it’s become a trendy descriptor. I never really saw people being described as femme (butch showed up a lot), but suddenly I’ve been seeing “femme” show up a lot. When did this become a trend and why?
I’m certain it was reallocated as part of some intersectional
thesis paperscreed against humanity. Those grievance studies majors have to justify their existence somehow.I figure “Hipster” has it covered.

Etymologists must be having a great time with all these new words popping up every day.
Or maybe they’re all just shilling for Big Etymology
According to Merriam-Webster, first known use 1957.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femme#Femme_in_1950s_and_60s_Butch_Femme_culture
I mean, it’s been a descriptor in the lesbian community for a long time. The reason you’re hearing it now is probably because of the emergence of this stupid non-binary thing. Everyone deciding gender is ~fluid~ and co-opting the butch/femme designation from the lesbians. I particularly love the “AFAB” NBs who present as “femme.” So…in other words…you’re female.
Lesbians have long been referred to as “femme,” in opposition to “butch.” However, I think the recent trend of describing biological males as femme was cooked up by the transgender crowd.
BTW, that article that was posted here yesterday about “why can’t my transgender superstar friends get dates,” led me to thinking, these non-binary kids are just the “club kids” of the new generation.
When did this become a trend and why?
There are many colors in our rainbow, and we must name them all.
I got a firewall on that Comey link (with the possibly ironic message, “You obviously love great journalism.”) Is there a back door or unsecured basement window in?

The most controversial portion of the Obama-era guidelines had demanded colleges use the lowest standard of proof, “preponderance of the evidence,”
Otherwise known as, “unsubstantiated hearsay”.
It was a deliberate, calculated frontal attack aimed directly at white boys but ultimately at due process itself. If Trump via DeVos had not shot it in the head it was only a matter of time before the rabid idiots using it as a weapon today would fall victim to it themselves. There is a good reason to have due process requirements and thus a good reason why the left hates it so much.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers seems more and more prescient every day.
Yay DeVos. I hope that watching his designs being dismantled drives the chocolate jesus to suicide.
They might have aimed at white boys, but it looks like they hit black boys more often.
https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2017/09/the-question-of-race-in-campus-sexual-assault-cases/539361/
The authorities punishing black men for fucking white women with the fig leaf of “HE RAPED HER!!!!” is nothing new. Though an expulsion from college is a lot better than being lynched.
I will never forget that the when the lawyer for Jameis Winston’s accuser was asked at a press conference “How do you know the sex wasn’t consensual?” and she responded with essentially “My client wouldn’t have sex with a black boy.”
Except, you know, she was a member of an “FSU Cleat Chasers” Facebook group where girls who were looking to hookup with the athletes of FSU traded info on what parties, bars, dorms, etc. to go to. But totally would never have sex with a black guy. She was only interested in the punter.
But we’ve gone from The Scottsboro Boys to All the Boys.
STEVE SMITH should start a college.

Or the bluegrass album they put out together. ‘Shady Grove’ I think it’s called?
Yeah, Shady Grove was terrific. And if you really want the bluegrass in its purer state, Old And In The Way is an absolute classic.
Janet Napolitano, the president of the University of California system and a Homeland Security secretary in the Obama administration, said in a statement that the department’s announcement would “in effect weaken sexual violence protections, prompt confusion among campuses about how best to respond to reports of sexual violence and sexual harassment, and unravel the progress that so many schools have made.” (California is one of the states now requiring the lower standard.)
And Fatima Goss Graves, president of the National Women’s Law Center, an advocacy group for women’s rights, said Ms. DeVos’s announcement would have a “devastating” impact on students and schools.
“It will discourage students from reporting assaults, create uncertainty for schools on how to follow the law and make campuses less safe,” she said in a statement.
If you cannot believe Janet Napolitano, whom can you believe? It’s devastation, all the way down.
Let me help. Pick up the phone, call the police.
“uncertainty for schools on how to follow the law ”
If only we had an impartial professional class with lots of experience in dealing with crime then reports of criminal activity could be handed over to them to investigate and credible accusations could be handed over to a theoretical second professional class to be adjudicated.
Our neglect is going to result in…well, I dont know. If 5 out of 4 women in college are raped every day I dont see how it could get much worse.
Presumption of innocence is white supremacist.
In the campus justice system, baseless accusations of sexual misconduct are considered especially Not OK. At the University of California, the dedicated bureaucrats who investigate these drunken awkward encounters are members of an elite squad known as the Special Regrets Unit. These are their stories.
DUN DUN
LOL
That’s funny stuff right there.
lol.
It’s too bad said professional class promotes the interests of the state and not the interests of justice.
The people supporting these college lynch mobs are the same people who put Scarlet Letters on women.
They are what they’re all afraid of. Predators.
Reading through that campus rape thing, it seems to me our only reasonable course of action is to just declare women as a group to be non compos mentis in all circumstances, and establish as a point of law that they are incapable of informed consent in any situation. Not mentally qualified to enter into contracts or agreements of any sort. That should satisfy them.
That’s pretty much the unstated thesis of modern feminism. They have this freaky split personality going on; they’ll assert that women are no-nonsense hardasses who can do everything men can do, but the next moment they’ll be on their knees whimpering for Big Daddy Government to protect them.

where the important issue that dominated the debate was… flag burning.
I was watching TV yesterday afternoon and decided to watch an episode of futurama. The one I watched was about Dr. Zoidberg eating the earth flag in defence of free speech. It was funny. Head in a jar Nixon berated him for it. He offered to show him the one place on earth where the constitution doesn’t mean shit-The supreme court.

It’s all Uber’s fault
Even so, this move is not without risk for the London mayor. Around 40,000 drivers work for Uber (though the company has always rejected suggestions that they are its employees). In a sad irony, that contract-worker status also means drivers will not be entitled to severance pay if Uber ceased to operate in London. Some would undoubtedly find work with other minicab companies, while others might struggle to pay their bills, particularly if they have borrowed money to buy or lease their cars. The mayor needs to find a way to seem sympathetic to their plight while confronting the mighty Uber.
Sad irony indeed. The government (and rent-seeking competitors) threaten to put all these people out of work, while lamenting their inability to get “severance” pay.
It’s a goddam tragedy. Who will save these people from the ravages of capitalism?
Spare me the bullshit. Should read “appeasing the cab lobby”
Being liberal means standing on the railway if technological progress, and yelling: “Stop! You can’t voluntarily enter an agreement like that!”
This idea that everyone who gets paid by a company is an employee is fucking retarded. If you do as much or as little work as you please on whatever schedule you want, you’re not an employee in the legal sense of the word.
And I’m against government injustices regardless of who they affect, but this one is especially irritating to me because I make a lot of extra money by doing freelance writing jobs on various websites. If Hillary had her way, those sites would probably be forced to classify me as an employee and pay for health insurance. Of course, that would totally fuck up the business model of these sites and they’d end up shutting down. I’m sure Hillary wouldn’t give a shit that she has taken away a stream of income for tons of non-rich people like myself, but as long as she gets to virtue signal, it’s all good.

How the London vs. Uber saga plays out will be an important test of Britain’s mood — and will give clues to its future political direction. There is a feeling in the air that regulators should stand up to businesses that simply ignore any rules they don’t like. Even among Conservatives, free market fundamentalism is out of fashion. Britons are no longer so in love with “disruption” that we are prepared to overlook the consequences to job security and quality of life it can entail. Perhaps voters have decided that the slogan that galvanized the Brexit vote — “Take back control!” — equally applies to imposing rules on unfettered capitalism.
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
Letters to the Local Rag: Miserable Old Coot Edition
:’-(
Kids play on the street all the time. They have for a long time. What time and place did this person grow up in that didn’t ever have kids playing in the street?
The local rag had a letter that made me LOL a while back, I don’t remember exactly so I’ll paraphrase as best I can.
“If an individual has suffered a heart attack or stroke and the ambulance takes more than 5 minutes to arrive that person has more than likely suffered BRAIN DAMAGE.”
No context, caps in original.
I guess their ambulance took longer than 5 minutes, if they’re posting that apropos of nothing…
I actually wrote an email to the local newspaper once, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it published a day or two later. It said something to the effect of, “There is no ‘war on women’. Men are the only ones who must register for the draft. Men are routinely fleeced in divorce/family court and go to jail if they are unable to pay up. Men are given harsher prison sentences than women who commit similar crimes. It’s true that some politicians are out of touch with the concerns of female voters, but to call this a ‘war on women’ is an absurd exaggeration.”
For some reason this morning i remembered a friend I had in 8th grade that slathered underarm deodorant on his chest for its aantiperspirant properties. Fucking weird thing for somebody with no chest hair to do.

“It is unlikely that universities, unless forced, will change the Obama-era policies. The interim guidance issued Friday generally allows universities to retain the procedures they adopted after the 2011 Dear Colleague letter, and many institutions have already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on expanding bureaucracies charged with carrying out those procedures.
And as liberal institutions, many college presidents want to avoid aligning with President Trump—particularly on an issue like sexual assault. “These are institutions which, on any gender-related questions, are well to the left of the national norms,” said Johnson, the author. “Due-process advocates are not going to stage a campus sit-in in the president’s office, but if a president does anything to create a fairer process on this issue, she could be targeted by accuser’s rights groups. If the impression is that President X is indifferent to rape, President X is probably going to be out of a job.””

Nevermind all of the true believers that got hired as administrators, consultants, and advisors for the sexual assault policies that now want to retain their positions at any cost.
Apparently, it’s the students as well.
“Rodgers showed two videos during an RA training session Aug. 18 which he said represented competing political narratives about campus sexual assault. Representing the view of the left, Rodgers showed a trailer of The Hunting Ground, a problematic documentary that has come under heavy fire from Reason, Slate’s Emily Yoffe and others.
When he showed a PragerU video, “Are 1 in 5 Women Raped in College?” that challenges the methodology of the Campus Sexual Assault (CSA) Study most frequently cited by rape epidemic believers, several of the RAs revolted.”

RE: McCain.
OK, regardless of your opinion of the merits of the bill; eg, some here have given the opinion that they personally think McCain is a douchetard but don’t really care about the bill getting killed since they thought it sucked anyway; however, WTF is wrong with the old man?
1. It would be a minor miracle for him to see next summer.
2. He stands to gain absolutely nothing legislatively substantive from the Dems by doing this.
3. I’m forced to conclude that he’s strictly doing this to grandstand and get his name in the papers.
This is truly pathetic. That you’d spend your last days sucking up to a Politico-Media establishment that’s going to despise you no matter what phony admiration they show you short term has got to be some kind of mental illness. When he first got diagnosed, I felt bad for the old fart; now… well wishing death on him violates my personal code of ethics, but I sure do wish he’d just go away. It’s faaaaaaar too late for him to grow up and sit at the adult table, just go sit in a rocking chair and count blades of grass or something. SMH.
Just start with the premise that McCain is an absolutely unprincipled self-aggrandizing piece of subhuman shit and all of his behavior suddenly makes sense.
“well wishing death on him violates my personal code of ethics,”
Not mine because I believe in reincarnation. Praying for his death and that he gets reincarnated as someone not so fucking stupid and egotistical.
These guys think it is all ego driven. But they also say (in the same article) that he is not the worst Senator. You can guess who those neo-cons think the worst one is.
Straffin:
I’m curious about how long it took you to get fluent in Japanese and if you still have some kind of accent. I ask because I took a couple of semesters of Russian in college and just learning the alphabet was a pretty tall order and I had to come to terms with the fact that I am not one who picks up foreign languages easily. Compared to Japanese, Russian seems like a walk in the park. Just wondering.
Who said I was fluent in Japanese? I can read, write and speak, but wouldn’t say fluent. 17 years and counting and I’ve passed all the proficiency tests, but unless I’m actively listening, conversations just pass me by. 20 years in total. Learning the 2000 basic Kanji and the combinations takes years, especially if you want to be able to handwrite them.
Wow, that’s crazy. Does it get tough living in a place in which you still can’t understand things 100% without concentrating?
You’re not married yet, are you?
As with marriage, it’s a plus overall. 😉 . Q, I read the Yomiuri everyday to keep my skills up and write at least 30 minutes a day just to keep my writing up to snuff. I could be here a 100 years and would never sound exactly like these guys.

Earthquake or bomb test?
China’s earthquake administration said on Saturday it had detected a magnitude 3.4 earthquake in North Korea that was a “suspected explosion”, raising fears the isolated state had conducted another nuclear bomb test.
The administration said in a statement on its website that the quake, which occurred around 8:30 a.m. GMT, was recorded a depth of zero miles.
If it were a bomb test, Lil’ Kim would be ejaculating it all over the news, so I’m guessing earthquake.
3. I’m forced to conclude that he’s strictly doing this to grandstand and get his name in the papers.
What’s truly grating is the number of headlines referring to McCain and “principles”. Each time I see one, I think it’s going to be about how the principled thing to do would be to admit he is no longer capable of properly fulfilling the responsibilities and duties (har har har) of his high office, and step down.

For those who get the tingling sensation instead of just relaxation from the soft repetition it’s very real indeed. Where?
From the base of the skull progressing to the top of the head, sometimes radiating down the spine. Think “piss shivers” but longer-lasting and able to be reliably triggered by certain stimuli. It’s not a sexual feeling but it honestly feels about that good. I can also understand how someone who doesn’t have this would be skeptical and would think it’s placebo effect or something because I’m about as cynical as it gets.
weird.
i’m still reserving judgment until someone gets you on a freaking EEG and determines the mechanism of what is actually happening to you, and whether its a learned response or whether its something specific to different brain development.

“It is important to be very clear about what exactly Trump is alleging there in his tweets: That President Obama had ordered a wiretap on Trump’s own lines — he repeatedly uses the term “my phones.” Compare that to what CNN reported last night about Manafort: That the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court had OK’d two separate wiretaps on Manafort — one in 2014 tied to Manafort’s work in Ukraine and and a second focused on Russian involvement in the 2016 election that extended through the early part of 2017. (It’s not clear when the second tap began.)
During the period of time covered by the second Manafort wiretapping, Trump and his former campaign chairman were still in contact. It’s not known whether any of the conversations between the two men were picked up on the wiretap. While Manafort does have a residence in Trump Tower, it’s not clear whether any FBI surveillance took place there. Is it possible Trump meant “my phones” as a catchall for every phone line associated with a person at Trump Tower? If that’s the case, why has neither Trump nor the White House made that clear before now as this allegation has festered?”
http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/19/politics/trump-wiretapping-manafort/index.html
What a partisan hack.
TW: Autoplay
They parse and nitpick to a ridiculous degree when it works out in their favor. I saw a story stemming from the original Trump wiretapping tweets (can’t remember what news outlet though) where the writer essentially said the idea of Obama breaking into Trump’s residence and wiretapping his phone was insane so it was obviously a lie.
I could be mistaken, but I seem to remember some “progressive” hack arguing that the wiretapping claim is false because with modern surveillance, there’s no actual need to physically splice a wire into the phone line.

Had a nice nut punch in Senator Paul’s state yesterday morning on my way home from TN. Just after crossing north into KY on 75 we see signs for Drug Search stops. All vehicles subject to search. Evidently they were just pulling people over at random because we were not stopped. They were at least a dozen trooper cars that had people pulled over at at least half as many stops within a 5 to 7 mile stretch of highway. They were working both sides it looked like. We saw more cops over the next 5 to 10 miles, not sure if they were part of the drug stops. That’s more cops than we saw are entire vacation.
Kentucky thing or evil Sessions at work?
Probably a KY + Fed WOD dollars thing.
How is that even vaguely legal?
I don’t know. I know it’s bullshit. I’m sure if you tell them to get a warrent, you’ll be sitting around waiting for them to bring a drug dog who will give them the magic permission to search your car. We need a better Supreme Court.
According to Rodriguez v. United States, the police cannot make you wait for them to get a drug dog. But if they’re conducting a sweep like this, they probably already have the drug dogs close by.
And people wonder why I seem untroubled when cops get killed.
Yeah, my wife was subjected to my profanity-laden ranting about cops and the government during that stretch.
This is why I love my wife: in the same situation, I would have been subjected to her profanity-laden ranting about cops and the government during that stretch.
Nice:) She’s a keeper.

Tony Rice can play.
He was amazing. First time I saw him live, it was at The Hole In The Wall saloon in Salt Lake. 1981 or thereabouts. Tiny little place as you might guess. And I then went home and burned my guitar.
I hope you’ve seen this from his early days, when he could still sing:

A Firearms PSA
Glibs, just a heads-up to firearms owners here. I hate detail-stripping my range guns.
If someone tells you that an inexpensive ultrasonic cleaner is a great way to deep-clean your guns, they are right. Tired of using harsh solvents and splattering them everywhere with a nylon scrubber? Ultrasonic may be for you.
However … (isn’t there always a however?)
It will scrub the holy living shit out of the finish – or at least if that finish is Bruniton (Beretta’s black finish) and CZ’s Polycoat. Small sample, true, but I now have a couple of slide releases that I might want have re-treated. Not a big problem, I kind of expected it after I saw what happened to an old BHP mag that I tested first. 45 seconds in a cheapo-Harbor Freight unit and it looked like a school of pirhanas had been to an all-you-can-eat at the local Olive Garden.
Conclusion
Never trust the main body of your gun to any new cleaning method until thoroughly tested, but I think if you want to try this (and I recommend that if you hate doing full strip-and-rebuild maintenance, you might want to consider it for guns which you consider tools or ‘fun, cheap range guns’), then coated and blued finishes are gonna get beaten up. It’s possible that a good parkerized finish will be OK, and I have reports from the guy who owns the unit, that it’s fine for Glocks. My stainless guns came out better than new. But for the moment, I ain’t donating my can of gun scrubber to anyone.
What medium are you using?
2L of warm water, half-teaspoon of Dawn
And that removed the blueing/anodizing?
Huh. I have never tried ultrasonic before and dont know much about it.
I do have a bulk vibrator that I use crushed walnut shells as a medium for cleaning brass prior to reloading but that is a different ballgame altogether.
Well — that’s the thing.
Polycoat, is a polymer baked-on finish that is a bit like Duracoat, not the most robust finish in the world, but it’s moderately thick, so in day to day use, it’s quite forgiving of holster wear etc. The fact it was stripped right off (the CZ slide release now looks like a really good parkerized steel.
Bruniton, I don’t know a lot about, but I do see it’s quite susceptible to holster wear, so again, it’s probably a baked on polymer. The way it got stripped left areas of Bruniton, and patches that went thru’ to a less-impressive dull dark gray that might be parkerized.
Glock Tennifer finish is reported to be very robust and already looks like parkerization, so the buddy I have who said his Glock cleaned up great is believable.
Since the OP, I dropped my BHP ‘ Practical in, along with the slide, leaving the target sights outside of the water, and it came up looking brand new. Stainless and the parkerizing are clean and unaffected. The ejector is dulled, because that’s actually coated stainless, but all I have to do with this gun is flush it out with distilled water, dry it and lube it and it’ll be better than when I last had it serviced.
I will do my Inox 92G, but I’m going to have to strip it first, because all the fittings are duracoated, after I did my rebuild.
A few other guns like the P320, I’ll be able to do selectively, but anything coated, including Ceracoat – I think I won’t risk.
Did some reading and looked at a few videos. I see some successes and some failures. Looks like the main reason for the failures is people failing to remove all of the water from the interior of the gun.
Tip: Water is highly soluble in isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol is more volatile than water will and tends not to rust metals as it is a weak base. I dont know of a source of 100% IPA so I use the cheap stuff from the drugstore which is 95%, the rest being water. I rinse metal parts that have been exposed to water with the IPA and it removes all of the original water then I use a hair dryer to evaporate the IPA. The IPA helps evaporate whatever water remains. Then I oil. It is a very effective method for water removal.
I wonder if you could use the Isopropyl alcohol as a cleaning medium?
That is on stainless and blued, I wouldn’t use the alcohol on any polymer finishes, it might dissolve them.
I dont think I would put any nickel plated parts in an ultrasonic cleaner either. It might vibrate the plating off.
I’m not even sure I’d do blued guns in this. The thought of fucking up a really nice S&W 29 almost brings me to tears.
I guess the right viewpoint to adopt is that this is an industrial cleaning technology, like naval jelly, lye and sand-blasting :/
In a well-ventilated place, maybe. The action of the ultrasonic transducers (quite expectedly) gets turned into heat, and the agitation is likely to throw off a fair amount of favor.
uggh . “vapor”.
Yeah. It was a tempting idea but I think I will stick with my brass brushes and oil. It is so tempting because gun cleaning around here doesnt get a designated day. It gets a designated week.
A quicker more efficient way would be nice but I will stick with tradition.
The thing about IPA (from cleaning fiber not firearms) is that it leaves a residue behind, as well as that it’s hydrophilic and will absorb moisture from the air and dilute itself. It also has a tendency to wick into crevices and persist.
IPA uses less Hoppe’s.
See, all the smart people use metric!
My method is to field strip and rough clean my weapons at the range, hit the carbon areas with breakfree, put it all together, function test (so I didn’t accidentally leave something behind), and go home. In the next couple of days to a week, set up a tv table in front the tv covered in a plastic garbage bag, get a big box of Q-tips (generic store brand are better than Q-tip brand), put on a movie and just zone out while cleaning.
The place I shoot is indoor, and cleaning would be a bit of an imposition on the other shooters. I do quick cleaning at home which gets them back to a ‘pretty clean’ state, but from time to time – it’s highly arbitrary – maybe 2000/2500 rounds – I like to strip the gun right back and remove firing pins/FCGs etc and degrease everything so I can re-lube a totally clean set of surfaces. Probably overkill, but it keeps me off the keyboard for an hour or so when I do 2 or 3 at the same time.
Is this real?

Yes, because icky Republicans are wholly responsible for the drug war. No Democrats share any responsibility whatsoever.
Ok, I’m in need of Glib advice. Girl I’ve been seeing just told me how great Howard Zinn’s “People’s History of the United States” is. I’ve never read it, I know it’s widely praised by leftists. I’ve been poking around the interwebz and stumbled across some reserved libertarian praise for it as well but with the state of what passes for “libertarian” these days that might not mean much. So has anyone read it and is it worth reading, even if only to refute it? More importantly should I run away from this girl? I already know she’s pretty proggy but starting to wonder if she’s a TRUE BELIEVER.
It should be read because it’s so universally known. Always know what sort of derp is lodged in people’s heads so that you can, as the mood and circumstances warrant, either recognize and extirpate it or recognize and laugh at it.
That seems like pretty sage advice. Is it brain breakingly stupid or does it have some merit?
I took a look at the synopsis on Wikipedia. I saw frequent occurrences of the words “inequality”, “robber barons”, and “social reform”. I’m not going to spend too much time badmouthing a book that I haven’t read, but that’s already not a good sign.
The problem with Zinn, which should resonate with anyone conversant with ‘traditional’ history books is his lack of citations. Much of what he puts in the book is only slightly better than opinion journalism. Its primary interest to me was its influence upon the American loony left.
If I wanted to take the time to deprogram a lefty that claimed to be in any way intellectual, I’d address its op-ed nature. I’d concentrate on the fact that Zinn openly claims that the objective of the book is to ‘change America’ (not ‘change how America thinks about America’, which could be a noble cause),
Finally, I’d ensure my audience understood that history is not science.
America is uniquely sinful in the world.
There, I just summed it up for ya.
yes.
in the sense that, if you don’t know the book, you don’t know the inner workings of the prog mind. which is break-breakingly stupid, but has some internal logic.
*I had to read that book in 10th grade. I found it entertaining. It takes a lot of examples though American history and engages in some ‘mild stretching’ of the truth in order to adhere to a narrative of White Colonialist exploitation, rape, and murder. Lots of it is true – its just that if you also know all of the context, and are informed about world history in a broader sense, its less outrageous than it intends to be.
It has merit if you like commie propaganda.
I thought “don’t stick it in crazy” was pretty well known around here. Run. Run far and fast.
A lot of the book is highly plausible if your grasp of broader history is flimsy. Much of it is arguably fair, but there are some lovely nuggets of pure venom in there, that are like turds in the bottom of your jacuzzi.
That a girl should be impressed by the book is not a warning signal, it’s more like a NOAA Hurricane funnel map 4 days out from landfall. It’s a hazard that might require action, but it’s too soon to say.
If the girl is worth investing time in (and it sounds like she might be) – read the book? Ideas won’t give you cancer. And you’ll discover the nuggets of poison, and should you consider it worthwhile, you can be her antidote.
It’s frustrating how smart, educated and otherwise wonderful people have been conditioned to eat that crap up. I’ve tried to pin her down on about what anyone can find so objectionable about individual rights but she just had waves it away and says “they work fine for white males, you guys are the top of the food chain.” I’m leaning towards running but wondering if I should at least see if I can get her to read Basiat or Rothbard. I thought maybe agreeing to read Zinn might be a token of good faith.
I doubt Bastiat would dent that kind of impervious lunacy. If she sees society as a ‘food chain’ and not as a community of individuals with conflicting objectives, there might not be much you can do.
I presume you’ve asked her what her solution is to fix society, and allowed her to expound at length on how and who would address the second-order results of those policies. Do it with a beer or two so you see an unfiltered exposition of just how she would deal with people who would oppose those policies, and remind her at the end, that those sanctions are the ones you would be subject to.
I have and it always comes down the hand waving. I have asked her where anyone can derive the moral authority to control another person and the counter argument was “well I guess you think mentally ill people should be able to make their own decisions….”
Yeah writing that just made me realize what I need to do…
Seriously, run. Anyone who talks about white and male privilege as real things has been completely brainwashed.
Wait, wait, wait…
How’s she look?
Good enough that I stayed around this long 😉
Remember, no matter how hot they are, someone, somewhere is tired of their shit.
In this case, looks like it’s you.
I broke a girl’s mind once, asking her- in effect – “who owns you?” and then making her follow the answer to its logical ends. Broke it in a good way.
I’m much older now, with less evangelical zeal, and I wouldn’t waste what’s left of my time, even to ‘fix up’ a girl like that.
I think you are probably right. In her defense though she isn’t completely intractable. I challenged her about the wage gap and got her to look into it more deeply. She admitted that it’s disingenuous to just call it up to sexism and not consider some of the underlying factors. She has dumb ideas but it’s not like I’m dating Big Red.
*chalk it up

No. you need to give someone like this baby-steps. Hoffer’s “True Believer” is a good start for many, as its not a polemic about any particular idea, but rather a cautionary tale of “idealist” politics overall. It helps undermine proggy enthusiasm for their own moral superiority.
then try something else ‘soft’. Like “Self-Reliance” (emerson) or essays by CS lewis
Lean harder. Good faith doesnt get you anywhere with a prog.
My now wife said I was a racist because I opposed affirmative action. Politically she was a D, but mostly for intentions. In the twenty years we’ve been together, she’s become far libertarian although I doubt she would describe herself as that.
She was always a very much leave me along and let me do my own thing person. Between that and numerous examples of local government & local politicians screwing up things than affect her (bag bans/paper bag taxes, worsening traffic, boondoggles, etc), she’s more in agreement with me that government is the problem.
I never tried to feed her intellectual foundations nor did I set out to change her. I liked her for her many other qualities and the politics wasn’t a big part of it. I just presented my views as they came up (sometimes ranting a little too much). Also, she’s said on many occasions that she much preferred her before illusions and finds herself far more cynical about most everything now and puts that on me.
Fantasy is a fine place for a vacation. Not so fine as a reality.
I guess that’s why I brought this before the Glibs. Some people here seem to have happy marriages despite radically different political philosophies with their significant others. I’m trying to figure out if that would work for me….
IMO there are two kinds of leftists…..those whom would latch onto whatever the fashionable opinions of the day are (ie your average person) whom really just took what their teachers told them at face value and believe it because: “duh, everyone does”
And the other sort is the True Believer…..whom wants to tear down everything and fundamentally change human nature because they are motivated by envy and power lust.
The first type there is hope for, the second not so much.
Not wanting to beat the drum on this, but I take issue with using ‘leftists’ – it’s just that the left-authoritarians are the ones in the social bully-pulpit at the moment.
Your proposition is radical freedom. The freedom for her to choose to about a baby. The freedom to become successful in whatever she wants in life. The freedom to define who she is. The freedom to not fear the patriarchy.
What? She wants freedom for herself at the cost of other peoples’ freedom? That’s not cool.
In order to enjoy that, she’s gotta reject the comforting idea that anyone’s gonna do it for her. She needs to cultivate allies, not co-dependents.
Fair enough, “progressives” is probably a better term
Incidentally, one response to Zinn is “So what?”
You have no moral responsibility for what America did in the past. Your objection to Zinn is his impled policy recommendations for the future.
Dude. Collective guilt.
Collective. Guilt.
Now, pay up.
“People’s _______ of ________”. Run far away.
JK, I haven’t read it. But it is good general advice.
The basic thing about “People’s History of the United States” is that as a history book it isn’t all that accurate. Zinn was more interested in getting his viewpoint on the basic facts of US history than being accurate. He summarized events and put his (US the evilest country in the history of the world) spin on them and did not use historical documents to back up his interpretation. And some of his facts, as well as his interpretations are flat out contradicted by evidence available before he wrote the book.
Texas, why you so crazy?
Texas’ woes are interconnected. Rising energy prices allow politicians to take their hands off the legislative wheel. Less attention to smart, controlled growth at the state and local level allowed unchecked sprawl along the coast. And now declining revenues will make it harder for the state to address its very real needs, assuming the Legislature can get its act together. The silver lining to this tale? It finally seems to be dawning on people that low taxes, less regulation and more oil are no substitute for actually governing.
———-
Texas Republicans, somehow, have become the anti-business party. “Most of the threats to the future of Texas are self-imposed: Inadequate education and infrastructure funding can stifle growth,” said M. Ray Perryman, an economist who describes himself as a fiscal conservative. “Discriminatory social legislation can irreparably damage the business climate, and hard-line immigration posturing is counterproductive.”
Mr. Abbott hasn’t shown much interest in toiling in the garden of economics, anyway; where Mr. Perry doled out some $500 million in incentives to companies to move, stay or grow in the state, Mr. Abbott has parsimoniously offered enticements often measured in the several hundred thousand dollars (except for Toyota, which got $40 million in incentives from the state to move to Plano).
Oh, no! why can’t Texas be more like Massachusetts? I’m surprised he didn’t blame it all on campus carry.
Spoiler Alert: Downturn in gas and oil has a disproportionate effect on Texas economy. Also, Rethuglitards are bad. That “bathroom bill” came out of nowhere.
Dawning on who exactly? How would more taxation and regulation lead to more prosperity?
Inadequate funding based on what? Perhaps California should be a bench mark as their infrastructure is complete shit despite high taxation
Wait so they are complaining about less revenue and then complaining about less crony capitalism with incentives?
The NYT giving economic advice to Texas. That’s rich. The only thing better would be a Venezuelan economist telling Texas how they should be acting.
So i checked the the data…texas is at 4.2 not 4.4 like he claims for unemployment. They led the pack in the 1Q2017 for GDP at 3.9 percent (he used a graphic from 15 to 16)
Also he was shilling FOR MORE taxes and using Massachusetts as a good example as he admits they have the same tax burden which means mass isn’t actually taxed higher. And then he contradicts himself by complaining about how abbott doesn’t give out as much incentives (tax goodies) as perry did to attract businesses. Tax goodies are effectively lower taxation. So he ends up admitting lower taxes are a good thing
Now i think it should be lower taxes across board with no special carve outs…whereas this guy wants tax goodies to special companies to attract them
Liverpool fans, get ready to avert your eyes.
America is uniquely sinful in the world.
J Pierpont Morgan was worse than Hitler, Beelzebub and John Wayne Gacy all in one.
According to Zinn, yes, because he was a Class Enemy, and EVERYONE was his, and his cabals victims. The obvious reaction was (in Zinn’s tems, IIRC) that “new possibilities” were open to ensure that would stop.
The fact that he really doesn’t spell out what those “new possibilites” are, would need to wait for his next opus “A People’s History of Demcratic Socialism, 1917-1989”
“Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts was accused of hypocrisy Wednesday by WRKO radio host Jeff Kuhner for reliably railing against the one percent despite being worth millions of dollars.”

Frankly it’s much worse than that. She may be in the 1% but it’s not due to productive work but from, like most public “servants” & politicians, taking a cut & payoff no different than protection money paid to the mob.
At least the mob aren’t moral busybodies like Ms. Schoolmarm there.
Both will still put you in the ground if you cross them.
True, but at least you can get gambling, prostitution, and some really class A drugs before your funeral.
So, she admits to having no obvious talent of her own? That’s… interesting.
Where did her stock in ibm come from?
She was going on and on about how much her higher education cost back in the day. The guy needed to ask her why tuition costs have skyrocketed. Let her explain that one. Perhaps a follow up on how she justified the bloated salary she received when she was a professor and ask what the salary of the professors were at the schools she attended as a student.
Perhaps she should stop with all 1 percenters are greedy schtick if she doesn’t want it pointed back at her
