This NFL-In-London bullshit reeks of delusion, gimmickry, ad a total lack of regard for the fan base. This means I have to start drinking at 0730, which is early even for me. I suppose Irish coffee may be in order.
The burning question: will any players kneel and raise their fists for “God Save The Queen”?
It turns out that the people who worried about (((immigration))) back in the 1920s may have been right.
When you’re looking at a beauty contest participant in a bathing suit, isn’t the first thing on your mind, “I wonder if she’s on the rag?” Well, wonder no more.
LOOK AT ME!!! LOOK AT MEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
Now here’s an interesting take on the Trump/Kim celebrity Tweetmatch.
And for today’s old hippie music, a communist folksinger grudgingly admits that there’s virtue in Evil Kkkorporations.
Not for Angela Merkel, I assume.
It’s good that useful idiot sportballers are doubling down. Protesting the national anthem will show those damn Americans that they can’t keep the woke scions of the NFL down!
How long since blacks were allowed into the game? How long after the country was founded before every citizen was given equal standing before the law?
No other society in the history of the world has made as much progress socially, culturally and legally as the USA. Sounds like something to protest to me.
When it was originally just that ball-thrower, egged on by his marxist girlfriend, it was clear that he was doing it because America == Bad for whatever grievance they came up with.
Now, all these idiots doing it in solidarity are doing it because Trump is a Meanie.
They’re protesting the national anthem, and what it stands for in the minds of the normals, because of Trump.
That just doesn’t seem like a smart pivot.
I’ll continue to beat the drum that even in the sports world, we have this gross double-standard on free speech where you are free to share left wing thoughts and even come up with stupid and pointless protests, but don’t you dare come out as a conservative. It would make all the cries from the journos and ESPN talking heads about free speech and the right to protest a bit more impactful if they didn’t instantly get out their pitchforks for those who stray from left wing talking points when inserting politics where most people don’t want to hear about it to begin with.
I’m stating the obvious to the already unwoke here. But it’s like it has nothing at all to do with defending the rights to express oneself and everything to do with them simply agreeing with the politics behind it at all! I mean, it’s only embedded in how the entire protest is framed in every article on the subject that demands the brave individuals conducting them suffer no negative consequences for their actions.
Lost in all of this is that the god damn retard Kaepernick would still have a fucking job if he didn’t turn down a much earned demand of a paycut from the 49er’s. The moron and his agent misjudged the market for a slow witted athlete playing QB (who lost significant amounts of weight for no good reason on top of his erratic play) entirely two straight off-seasons.
On top of the 49er’s mistake, Kaepernick’s girlfriend torpedoed his chances with the Ravens with her retarded slavery tweet.
This is one of those moments where I totally buy the whole Trump is a master manipulator playing the media angle. The guy picks this issue where these people in their bubble worlds are completely ignorant of how most Americans actually view a bum like Kaepernick and these stupid anthem protests. NFL ratings are already dropping and the quality of play has been declining. The stories in the next few weeks are going to write themselves, frankly. The conservative media is going to have a field day with all of this and it’s cheap and visible win for Trump proving his point about the media being out of touch opposition propagandists.
Over/ under on players taking a knee during the anthem: 37.5
The NFL will start paying attention as their ratings continue to slip. What will they do? Gag the prog commentators?
Yep. The statements by the owners and commisioners all spoke of inclusivity and diversity.
Think how quickly that would change if Trump ordered the DoD to stop advertising on the NFL.
Sure the services would miss the opportunity to get their brand out in front of a lot of potential recruits, but it would be great to see the money grubbing whores (aka owners) completely break and kiss his feet to keep that contract.
Fuck Dom Capers for not being able to figure out the read-option. That’s the only reason Kaepernick looked any good after 2012.
It seems to me that not too many years ago some player took a ton of shit because he would give some kind of quick ‘thanks God’ christian thing after a touchdown. The left went nuts and were calling for his head.
Huh. That stuff happens every day in every soccer match around the world and nobody gives a shit.
that’s different. those people are from foreign places where woke-god still exists. in the US, invocation of the almighty is a sign of your affiliation with white supremacist right-wingers.
Wokeness in soccer is so far mostly limited to the occasional signage to “End Racism” because, well, there actually IS a lot of racism around the world. Even MLS seems unaffected by the madness taking over other American leagues.
If they really wanted to end racism they’d put Israel in the AFC and expel countries that refused to play Israel.
For better or for worse, I like it when Trump flips a table with a tweet or tiny action, and people go apoplectic.
They throw away the masks and the snarling beasts come out
Fucking CC Sabathia…”I stand against all things Trump”. Wtf does that even mean?
It means a deep hatred for toilet paper.
If you ever meet CC for God’s sake dont shake hands.
In his defense, he was probably drunk when he said it.
I don’t appreciate alcoholic-shaming.
I’m not shaming him. Hell, I’m still half drunk from last night while I’m writing this.
It means ‘I’m a sheep’ *bleating*
Exactly. He CHOSE to opt-out. He over rated himself and then idiots claimed ‘blackballed’.
It really is jumping the shark because there’s no ‘there there’ anymore. Everyone is just making up shit because Trump.
James and Curry in particular are acting like a couple of nitwits. Produce Trump is a racist or shut the fuck up and DO YOU JOB.
Looks like all the Ravens took the command to kneel before the mighty democrats, but only a few of the Jags, pretty much like we expected.
a total lack of regard for the fan base.
The NFL? That’s crazy talk.
It’s not about the fan base. In the short term, the NFL’s money doesn’t come from the fans. It comes from the TV networks, and the corporate boardrooms. Both of those are run by Ivy League leftists. The NFL is pandering to their money. In the long run, it could quite possibly hurt, but in the short run, this is probably a positive.
If average people stop watching and going to the games and buying the merchandise the NFL and the various other leagues will be screwed in short order. These multimillionaires pissing and moaning about how bad they’ve got it is just terrible optics.
Except, there are sports franchises that are part of the ‘fabric’ of their communities (Habs, Packers, Cowboys, Red Sox etc.) and it would take a LOT for their fan bases to abandon those franchises. I think.
But if the average fan makes up the bulk of the attendance/viewership, I can see them jumping ship.
Damn, I’m getting tired of it. I was listening to Mad Dog sports this morning with Graca interviewing a Boston reporter talking about Kraft who said every single county in Mass. voted Hillary and how Kraft supported Trump blah, blah.
It’s such a shame it’s come to this and NOTHING will come of it.
Nothing.
Just plain divisiveness and people being annoyed.
Their ratings are down almost 25% in the last two years. And ratings drive that number. Add in that the NFL has been the bulwark against falling TV watching and this is going to be a disaster.
It’s also worth noting that this week is suppose to be the Gold Star Family members week for the NFL. So if we see bigger Anthem protests it will basically look to many like they are protesting the honoring of mothers and fathers of dead military members who died in a war zone. Not a good look.
Never interrupt your enemy when he’s making a mistake.
Nope. You root him on, and you tweak him so he keeps doubling down on the mistakes.
Two scoops.
I don’t follow the NFL at all and don’t pay attention to anything other than baseball and soccer on ESPN, so others will have to tell me: how much attention is being given to the complete catastrophe the league’s return to LA has become? Seriously: any sport playing to empty stadiums despite perfect weather and weekend scheduling has a big problem with its popularity. Even the MLS fills its stadiums on weekends. (And yes: the Chargers, who currently play in the LA Galaxy’s 27,000-seat arena, are being outdrawn by the Galaxy there.)
I read an article that there is already some rumblings about moving the Chargers back to SD
I didn’t know they left SD. That’s how much I don’t follow football.
Apparently no one in LA knows either.
I’ve seen some mention of the fact that MLS is outdrawing the Chargers and the Rams but it has largely been on right wing news sites that are specifically looking at the culture war aspects. There are lots of mainstream articles about the ratings being down, but they keep attributing it to other things than the protests and general political nature of ESPN and the NFL. Everything from The Millenials Did It to The Cord Cutting to the weather and hurricanes. I had to piece together the 20-25% number from two different articles.
But you’re right. It’s not being covered as much as it should. Partly I think it is that the sports news folks are worried that if they just ignore it, the problem will fix itself.
That’s impressive considering how woeful LA Galaxy is this year.
I have to assume the NFL just thought people would flock to these teams the moment they arrived in LA, and that pesky chores like marketing we’re unnecessary. UCLA and SC football are institutions in LA, but I’d guess the reaction of those fans to the Rams and Chargers is “why the fuck should I care about these terrible teams that I have no connection to?”
As far as the Galaxy, yeah. For all the grief the MLS gets, they really know how to sell out their buildings.
Some sports are just more popular in one place or another. You’d think pro soccer would be huge in NYC but it’s not really. Not like in Portland or Seattle or now Atlanta. The Red Bulls struggle to fill their 25,000 seats. NYCFC does a little better at Yankee Stadium but you get the sense that more New Yorkers are rooting for El Salvador or Honduras than their home-town teams.
I don’t know if pro football was historically not as popular in LA relative to other cities? I can only vouch for Buffalo… the Bills are a fucking institution there.
Rhywun – My understanding is that LA is a college football town. There were pundits who didn’t expect moving the Rams and Chargers or either team or the Raiders would be much of a draw. Nobody in LA has any connection to any of those teams and they are all terrible. But the NFL desired having a team in LA. How can you be the National Football League if you don’t have a team in City Prime – West Coast. It’d be like not having one in New York or something.
The USC Texas game had more people there than that weeks Rams and Chargers games combined.
The sense I get from most American leagues is they don’t give a flying fuck about “connection”. The musical chairs they play here would be unthinkable anywhere else.
This^ And it drives me crazy. At the very least, the team’s nickname should stay with it’s original location. When you do move, start with a new nickname and market the hell out of it.
@Rhywun. Re “connection”, that’s true of the NFL, because matchday revenues are a vanishingly small part of the overall revenue model. But it’s not really true of other sports. If NHL or NBA teams relocate, it’s invariably because the ownership was too incompetent to market the team effectively, and they lost too much money. But non-NFL sports rely fairly heavily on money from local sources (e.g., matchday receipts, local TV contracts), so they tend to work harder to foster a community connection.
There was a study a month or so ago (I think) that said the primary reason ratings are down is because of the protests.
That was before the latest kerfuffle.
Huh. The (((Orthodox))) problem comes as no surprise. I heard they have quite a problem with that in Israel as well. It sounds like some of those cases are pretty iffy though.
Sounds like some of the trailer parks around here, except with more matzo and less meth.
What’s the “I’m a child of Holocaust Survivors” card they can play?
They don’t have one. There’s entirely too much white privilege in those drug-riddled tornado magnets dripping with despair and hopelessness.
The Ultra-Orthodox tend to leave a wake behind them. Whether it’s nuisance things like wanting to run village borders thru non-Jewish properties in La Jolla, or welfare fraud in NY. I know plenty of non-UO Jews who don’t like them.
As far as the welfare rules being difficult to understand, that’s a load of bullshit. The Lakewood UO community at large depends on the welfare system, you can guarantee they know exactly where the lines are drawn.
Why do so many ultra-conservative religious types feel entitled to live off the labor of others / the government teat (same thing)?
Not everybody — probably not a lot of Mormons on welfare for example.
Mormons tend to get married early and have a lot of kids. State welfare abuse definitely exists in the community, however the church has their own welfare system that many rely on as well.
From what I’ve read of the situation in Israel, they view themselves as quite literally doing God’s work. It’s not “welfare” to them, it’s the correct and righteous order of things. The state of Israel (in their view) is the one God commanded to exist, its inhabitants (the Jewish ones, anyway) are God’s chosen people, and this is how they serve God. Of course, to somebody who’s even slightly humanistic, it just looks like a transfer of wealth from the productive to the unproductive without any real benefit (studying the Torah doesn’t feed anyone or keep Israel’s many enemies at bay).
Speaking of which, I seem to remember a recent article about the UO kids in various American communities getting basically no “useful” education at their schools beyond like a sixth-grade level. It’s all just religion after that.
I wouldn’t be surprised. There are probably similar things going on with the Amish. But the Amish at least focus on self-sufficiency; they grow their own food, make their own clothes, etc. Although, there are a number of carve-outs in the law for the Amish which likely don’t apply to the UO.
Was that level of force even remotely necessary? On the other hand, if the police want to alienate the surrounding community, then they’ve done a fine job. I’m sure that won’t have any knock-on consequences for victims of serious crimes!
Of course it’s necessary.
How else could they burnish their image with their superiors, who, being mostly white are obvs gunna be fascist NAZI scum. The FBI guys are probably already on a shortlist to get awards and promotions from the ubernazi preznit Trump.
It’s totally transparent, and the only people who are gunna NOT see this are as bad or worse than a NAZI.
/prog
It is an impressive feat of mental gymnastics to watch the most antisemitic political groups accuse their opponents of being Nazis.
I’ve never been a sports fan, so unfortunately any boycott I put in place will have no effect on ratings.
Mixing politics with entertainment is like adding cat hair to nachos. It’s repulsive, even if you like cats and nachos.
Dammit, Gato Nachos are made with cat meat, not cat hair! No wonder sales never took off.
What, then is Gato Negro wine made from?
cats stolen from voodoo priests.
Unfortunately this mania has attached itself to the team I watch this morning as the owner came out against Trump’s statement.
I was looking forward to the game now I know the whole game will just be discussing politics and Trump and be an insufferable 3 hours. I guess I’ll do yard work instead.
Itir Esen loses her crown because she may-or-may not have showed support for the coup attempt from last year in a tweet. Her entire family is probably watching over their shoulders, waiting to be dragged to a Turkish black site. Shame and fear because of an ambiguous tweet.
That’s real oppression. Actual consequences for stepping out of line.
Itir will always be *my* Miss Turkey!
Hey, hate speech isnt free speech.
Every month, worried by a knock on the door that a special friend will show up and cause a bloody incident.
Nature grovels before the SJWs.
What a pathetic retraction. Even mighty Nature is powerless before the virus.
They caved, now the left is gonna love ’em. Also, why is Nature commenting on statues and street names anyway?
That is not how it works. They caved, so they are spared the rod until the SJWs decide they need to knuckle under again.
Wow. I realize it was just an editorial and not a research article… But this is not a rationale for anything. It’s really only a matter of time before this starts to impact research.
Reviewer #1:
The study was conducted properly and has high potential for impact in the field. However, it isn’t sufficiently woke and suggesting there may be a genetic component to intelligence may be triggering. I do not recommend this article for publication.

Pathetic.
My wife just showed me this little gem.
https://www.reddit.com/r/CringeAnarchy/comments/6nd021/earth_first_environmentalists_mourn_dead_trees/
I would have put the youtube link but when I tried to go there I was warned that I am not allowed to watch videos anonymously and youtube/google would be tracking my choices to watch. That creeped me out. What the hell is that? Anyone else get that? I have never seen it before.
It’s moments like that to where, if there were actually a just god, a bear would wander in and just start mauling the fuck out of those people.
You rang?
“Can we have some muscle over here?”
I did not get that.
What about fungus rights? They get to eat those trees.
Thinking about this more, I have a youtube account to which I am by default logged in. So they are tracking me anyway. And it makes me think twice about having clicked on it. Probably my account is now flagged somewhere, because I watched extreme-right material. Oh well, I watched Lauren Southern in Molenbeek the other day so they surely flagged me then, IDGEF.
Watch stuff across the political spectrum, it confuses them.
What about spirits of all of the forest floor species that they are crushing? What about the bugs they are killing just by walking around?
Those are some deeply disturbed people.
There’s the problem with leftists. They refuse to follow their batshit ideas to their logical conclusions. They should all be practicing Sokushinbutsu.
Huh, I’d never heard of that. At least their fanaticism was turned inward and not outward.
Crazed activist: I’D LIKE TO MOURN THE LOSS OF ALL THE OLD GROWTH TREES I’VE SEEN!
You’re in the logging industry, correct Suthern? Isn’t clearing out old growth on occasion actually healthy for a forest?
Yes, that is what fires are for. I’ve read most experts believe our fighting all forest fires leads to larger forest fires later on. But that doesn’t stop us from fighting every single one we find.
Let’s see if I can post a link, and paragraph text, without farking it all up:
The Juggalo March Is Not a Joke
[..]
A cool article. In the good old days, Vice would write stuff like this.
Yeah, thats all fine but they still cant explain how magnets work, can they?
I can never think of ICP or Juggalos without that popping in my head.
I personally don’t think that’s a terrible admission.
At least half the country doesn’t know how economics works. 11% of them think Hillary is honest and would make a great President.
And 14% believe in bigfoot
Yeah, but we’re part of the 14%. We *know* STEVE SMITH exists.
I know he has a special place in my
assheartI don’t know the context there but the only explanation I’ve heard is that the positive and negative attract. Why do they attract? Because that’s just what they do. Same with gravity. Just because you can observe, measure, and predict something doesn’t mean you can explain why it happens.
We have as good an explanation for how magnets work as we do for why water is wet. No, really. I am not being snarky.
Sounds like you just don’t know.
Meh. There will forever be morons on both “sides” of any discussion about science and natural phenomena conflating the how with the why and attacking each other. The phenomenon exists, we have a pretty thorough explanation for it, we can consistently predict how it behaves, and that is far more useful than pointless discussions about “why it happens” which can’t be answered now and may never have an answer.
Alternating E fields and B fields. It’s straightforward actually.
That’s how. Not why. There is no answer in science for why except “that’s the way it is”. Science is empirical and empiricism can’t address questions that are beyond observation. To do that you need a different epistemology.
That’s not true, planets revolve around new the sun. That’s an observation. Gravity is the why. Science explains the”why” all the time. It’s just that in some cases the answer is unknown.
None of this should be taboo except that some people cannot admit that every mystery of the universe has not been solved. Anyone who thinks asking fundamental questions is not in the realm of science is just not good at thinking scientifically.
Until you understand the “why”, any hypothesis you construct lacks the ability to make reliable predictions.
If you can’t make predictions, your science isn’t very useful. Not that a given scientific “fact” needs to be useful in its own right.
Juggalos == Deadheads
No different.
shittier music, shittier drugs, equally disgusting appearance
Vintage web design.
Still more functional and easier to navigate than the bulk of sites being designed today.
A dozen times per day I say “Oh, fuck off” and click a page closed because there is so much shit popping up and trying to load that the page is jumping around and I cant read it or it quits scrolling etc. and this just goes on and on and on. I lose patients.
It’s ridiculous.
SP and webdominatrix pride themselves on designing clean, functional sites and do not hide their contempt for the bulk of other website “designers.”
This site has about 0.5% of the budget of Reason, for example. And I would claim that it’s far less buggy.

Who would loan six figures to a man with six bankruptsies on their record?
is americanese Gloucester pronounced like britisher Gloucester ?
Yes. (Spent four months in Boston last fall.)
And I would have snarked about this in the main post had I known when I was writing it: THE GAME WON’T BE ON TV! It’s only available on Yahoo. The NFL really does hate its fans…
This will have zero impact on my lack of viewing.
LIVE WITH STEVE SMITH1
I keep laughing
The announcers were torturing him. He’s barely articulate, so they asked him to try doing his pick in a British accent.
And they ought to have Justin Tucker do the Anthem.
It’s on Westwood One radio. And on local TV in the Baltimore and Jacksonville markets.
NO ONE IS KNEELING FOR “GOD SAVE THE QUEEN”
The crowd did the Baltimore “O!” during the anthem. Delightful.
I just heard NPR gleefully report that many players ‘disregarded President Trump and knelt for the anthem, with many players standing behind them in solidarity.’
What. ThaFuck. Ever. It is sad that this is news these days.
It’s times like these that I’m glad my apolitical wife would be like “turn that boring shit off immediately” if I was listening to NPR in the house. You got to hear the radio version of SNP’s Newsish.
That bit was an in the between story news blurb. I later ran to town and listened to a full length story on the topic. NPR’s position seems to be that the NFL owners and players are all now in unified opposition to Trump. Maybe they are, I did not see the opening of the London game. The “expert (who I think is an ESPN guy) then went on to say that in-spite of that Kaepernick is still not playing, and did not even get a try out this year implying that is due to systematic racism. They are really doing their audience a disservice there, since I imagine the average NPR listener is not a huge football fan and does not know Kaepernick is a shit QB with an attitude problem whose girlfriend most likely ruined his football career. This is why I don’t listen to NPR very often. They are full of shit.
Stop playing the anthem at sporting events.
I agree. It has reached peak stupid.
That’s the “end welfare” solution to illegal immigration, or “get the government out of marriage” solution to gay marriage. Ain’t gonna happen.
And for today’s old hippie music, a communist folksinger grudgingly admits that there’s virtue in Evil Kkkorporations.
A fine song there even with the union plug at the end. Usually OMWC’s hippy music is not within my limited and uncultured taste range. Bravo for the last two days.
Speaking of ol Trump I heard Steph Curry was dis-invited from the white house. Sad
Sad, but enough is enough of these guys calling their President a racist without proof.
I remember when Tim Thomas chose to not go to the WH after the Bruins won the cup. Everyone and the media jumped on him for being disrespectful to Obama. He stood his ground and explained he didn’t agree with policies. For that he was a ‘right-wing’ pariah. These dopes are not even contending that; they’re just attacking the man himself and as if he’s not legitimate and that’s not appropriate.
Gee, I wonder what James and Curry thought of Thomas’s right to protest. I’m guessing they weren’t thrilled.
In this country sports seem to be the pasttime primarily for those who can’t stand politics. The team owners made a colossal mistake by not nipping this in the bud when it all started and now they get to deal with the fallout.
that’s different . obama was a good guy. trump is a bad guy.
And therein lies the double standard of it all.
Obama was just more refined in his ‘facia culo’ behaviour.
He was no less an asshole. And Lebron James and Chris Paul and Curry and all their ‘street tough talk’ can eat it.
Go bounce your balls.
Well they have strong principles. The principle being stuff I like is good, stuff I don’t is not. With this sort of principle you cant go wrong.
They probably didn’t give a shit as they were too busy counting their money.
This is about street cred, not having a real beef about a racist president or injustices the black community are suffering at the hands of entrenched, racist government institutions. These guys are making sure the people who look up to them from the hood know they’ve not sold them out. And this is a better way to signal it than, say, donating money to private schools in inner cities or creating scholarship funds to help kids escape the systematic poverty.
If these guys gave a legitimate shit about the plight of the black community, they’d be doing PSAs telling them to not get knocked up so young and to not have unprotected sex with people they’re not yet married to. And they’d be railing against useless and failing public school systems.
Every one of these entitled cunts need to look at Andre Agassi and then shut the fuck up about this shit forever.
See, I wouldn’t disinvite anybody. I’d just say that everybody is entitled to their opinions, no matter how stupid those opinions are.
That would be the boring, correct, and normal presidential-y thing to do. What Trump did with Curry was just his typical stupid pettiness. And entertaining.
There is a definite double standard in media response to athletes who skip under Republicans, especially Trump, and those who deigned to make a stand against the Light Bringer and Democrats. Tim Thomas was painted as a welp who was abandoning his team by the likes of ESPN and the rest of sports journalist world. They were rather mum on Matt Birk doing the same thing a little time later for whatever reason. They were legitimately asking the Bruins if he’d be suspended for his behavior of not attending. Read this shit:
An inane argument that Tim Thomas only has a right to voice his opinion on Obama if he retires and gives the Bruins back their money. As if the Bruins, a private sports team, didn’t have the right to fire Thomas if they deem his conduct outweighed his contributions.
So when I wrote my article on Romanian craft beer I realized there’s a lot from the more recent ones that I hadn’t tasted so I started research. I researched 4 yesterday and am on my second research project of the day today. Hop Hooligans fist fight session IPA. SO what is the view for session IPAs? My guess would be both ipa lovers and haters hate session ipa .It’s okay for a lower alcohol beer but not great, it is not that complex, rather simplistic really, dominated by grassy hop flavor and a bit of yeast, maybe some citrus and pine. Not to bitter.
I am not good at detecting or pretending to detect flavors. I recognize smells but have trouble putting words to those smells, which makes me a shitty taster. Or a not fake taster, i sometimes think that some aromas are in the tasters head more than in the drink.
yesterday i had an Australian pale ale which i did not kn ow was a thing. I though Australians only drink 24 packs of tasteless watery beer while they melt in from of their barbies oi their way to hot continent, hoping not to gen poisoned or envenomed. live and learn.

In some circles there’s lately a vogue for vandalizing or pulling down Confederate statues. The people doing it think (or say they think) that they’re striking a blow against racism. I think they’re, at best, engaged in a dangerous reopening of old wounds. At worst they’re threatening to inflict serious new ones.
…
Of course, not all went smoothly. The Reconstruction of the South between 1863 and 1877 was badly bungled, creating resentments that linger to this day and – in the folk memory of Southerners – often overshadow the harms of the war itself. The condition of emancipated blacks remained dire.
But overall, the reintegration of the South went far better than it could have. Confederate nationalism was successfully reabsorbed into American nationalism. One of the prices of this adjustment was that Confederate heroes had to become American heroes. An early and continuing example of this was the reverence paid to Robert E. Lee by Unionists after the war; his qualities as a military leader were extolled and his opposition to full civil rights for black freedmen memory-holed.
http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=7660
I think I ran into this guys blog in the comments old the old site, he usually has some interesting points.
Opposition to full civil rights for black freedman was the norm back then for northerners as well, it wasn’t unique to Lee or the South.
People are so stupid with respect to history. They seem to think social attitudes across the board were the same as today and that they would be some “enlightened” angel who would never succumb to the social mores of the time and believe blacks to be of a lesser race, or whatever example you can come up with. They the privilege of time on their side.
Eric Raymond is a smart dude, but what he’s saying here isn’t really blindingly brilliant.
How *do* you integrate a defeated enemy into your society when rape, ethnic cleansing, prolonged military occupation and gulags are off the table? Assimilation, by the fastest route is the most sane answer, and co-opting the social conventions, individual pride and sense of community are the among the best I can think of. Add to that the (brilliant) observations of Sowell, who gets to grips with the whole cultural issue of ‘Respect‘ and where it originated, and it’s easy to see why the North were conceptually right in the overall strategy they took in reintegrating the south.
The problem with freedom’s current existential threat is that the foot-soldiers were indoctrinated, not educated, and there are a fuck-ton of them,. It’s like fuckin’ Rorke’s Drift.
Excellent book
“I think they’re, at best, engaged in a dangerous reopening of old wounds. At worst they’re threatening to inflict serious new ones.”
That is exactly the point of what they are doing. They dont think they are fighting racism any more than they think they are fighting cancer.
Do the people funding Antifa really think they are fighting Nazis? Of course they dont.
his opposition to full civil rights for black freedmen memory-holed.
Considering his antebellum position on the issue was utterly indistinguishable from Lincoln’s, that’s probably a memory hole best left un-plumbed if the Great Emancipator mythos is to be retained in the public consciousness.
Just heard Adam Schecter say. ‘It’s time for everybody to choose their side….without hesitation we are choosing the side unity, CIVILITY and humanity.”
Go eat a bag of dicks you cunt.
Holy shit is the NFL gonna seriously go full on SJW jargon-bull shit?
I will watch only when the kick-off happens and not a second before. You’re insane if I want to watch that nonsense.
You mean Schefter? I still don’t get why they started to let him do anything besides relay what some source told him. Like anyone gives a fuck about his analysis.
I feel dirty having waded into this argument in form or fashion. It’s one of those hot take political issues completely detached from actual policy and meaning. Any asshole can form an opinion and two seconds and yell it at another person who will yell theirs back.
Yeh. Shefter. Sorry.
Kaepernick really opened a Pandora’s Box. This is getting stupid. REAL STUPID.
Trump should just back off here. Part of me wants him to continue but I’m not sure.
I think it needs to keep going at this point. There’s really no stopping it without capitulation. It’s like negotiating with terrorists. Giving into this retardation will spawn more of it and embolden the supporters. Can’t quit halfway through and exorcism.
HE GOOD THROW TO OTHER BIG GUY CATCHING GOOD RUN FAST WATCH OUT FOR OTHER BIG MAN WITH OTHER COLOR JERSEY TRY TACKLE CATCHING BIG GUY. Why couldn’t they have started this shit up a few years earlier? That way it would have been easier to tell the shady NJ land developers who own the Vikes to go pound sand when they demanded money for a new stadium.
That makes me think. Are there any teams out there right now who want a new stadium paid for by the taxpayers? Are all their players standing?
I’m guess in Arthur Blank is already planning a campaign to get Atlanta to build him a new stadium. His current one is already 2 months old.
Are there any teams out there right now who want a new stadium paid for by the taxpayers?
The Raiders got their cheque but the stadium isn’t erected yet. Of course, Ken can explain to you why that deal was a miracle of free enterprise because Nevada locals don’t pay hotel and entertainment taxes, and tourists don’t count as “taxpayers”.
Aren’t “unity” and “choosing sides” opposing ideas?
“Everyone is entitled to our opinion”
I’m not sure if I linked this yesterday.
But those who privately thought things had gone too far were given a voice by James Damore, 28, a soft-spoken Google engineer. Mr. Damore, frustrated after another diversity training, wrote a memo that he posted to an internal Google message board. In it, he argued that maybe women were not equally represented in tech because they were biologically less capable of engineering. Google fired him last month.
After months of apologizing by Silicon Valley for bad behavior, here was a young man whom some in tech’s leadership could potentially get behind.
Paul Graham, who founded an influential start-up incubator, Y Combinator, posted two articles about how the science behind Mr. Damore’s memo was accurate. Another start-up investor, John Durant, wrote that “Charles Darwin himself would be fired from Google for his views on the sexes.”
And the investor Peter Thiel’s business partner, Eric Weinstein, tweeted, “Dear @Google, Stop teaching my girl that her path to financial freedom lies not in coding but in complaining to HR.”
Nice.
Of course, the article oozes disdain for those troglodyte bullies.
Weinstein could have been broader in his appeal and tweeted:
Dear @
GoogleAmerica, Stop teaching my girl that her path tofinancial freedomadulthood lies not incoding but in complaining to HRbecoming an eternal victim.“were biologically less capable of engineering” – again the main argument is less interested not biologically incapable. Being the average programmer is not that difficult, and most programmers are very average
Don’t waste your time. The actual content of the letter was memory-holed five minutes after it became public.
Shockingly, all the responses to my “well, did you actually read the letter?” question were uniformly negative.
This is a demonstrably false.
Of course, they know that.
Is anyone watching the Ravens/Jags? What the hell is going on with Baltimore’s offense. Almost half time and they have 16 rushing yds and 0 passing yds. Is the Jax defense really that good?
Mike,
Did you see the results of the Tommies vs Johnnies at Target Field yesterday?
Tommies held the Johnnies to 1 yard total rushing and held the ball for 25m (out of 30) in the second half.
Only won 20-17.
ps. Looks like the Bison stomped Robert Morris pretty badly. Or are you more of a Fighting Sioux guy being as far north as you are?
I’m mostly just a North Dakota fan. It was fun seeing the Bison win 5 national championships in a row. But when they play each other, yeah, I’m a
SiouxHawks fan. I’ve spent the majority of my life either in, or within an hour drive, of Grand Forks.Wow. Half time and the Ravens have 27 total yds of offense. Maclin and Allen are totally fucking my fantasy football team
Ah, Maclin is in the concussion protocol. Great
How much equality and civility has occurred due to kneeling for the anthem. It’s been over a year now so I assume the entire country has joined hands and is singing kumbaya.
The problem is that people like you haven’t taken to bending the knee at the right time …
I met an american girl here in Bucharest a good while back – she was an English teacher, this seems popular among you lot, coming to countries like Romania to teach English and probably look down on us – who said something about the need for a national conversation in the US for some issue or other. I was quite surprised back then – I was young and innocent – and wondered what the bloody fuck a national conversation was. I am still not sure I understand.
You probably found someone who’s only discernible skill in life was the ability to speak the language they grew up with and therefore only have a marketable skill in foreign countries.
Did she cost much? How did she compare to domestics?
No, I think you’ve got it.
A national conversation is when progressives tell you what you are supposed to think. Then after they get bored, they smugly move onto the next thing. Until its time to have yet another conversation. Rinse and repeat ad nauseam.
On that note, I’ve never encountered a Romanian who didn’t seem to have some strange, simple folksy wisdom about them. You guys just seem to get it.
The most charitable interpretation I can give about the meaning of “a national conversation” is that the nation is supposed to “come together”, have a discussion (as though there’s nothing better to do), and reach consensus. Since we live in a liberal society with a republican government, there are to my mind very few matters that require such consensus, and as it happens, we’ve largely covered them already. Murder, right out. Rape, unacceptable. Slavery, absolutely intolerable. Freedom of speech, good. Freedom of religion, great. Freedom of the press, definitely have to have. One can only conclude that “national conversations” will be about picayune topics or else will involve regressing on some accomplishment of the past.
I was just listening to the Meet the Pressers’ outraged huffing and puffing about the Great Anthem Panic. If the jabbering nincompoops on all sides would just shrug their shoulders and say, “Who gives a shit?” we could move on to another shiny object.
Be careful what you wish for.
No kidding. What is the list now? It started with Russians but I cant really keep up with all of the distractions. All of it is just someone pointing and exclaiming ‘Squirrel!’
Have we got our tax reform yet? Obamacare repealed? How many wars are we bogged down in?
Don’t you actually think that most of the people really are just shrugging their shoulders and saying exactly that?
This seems more like some contretemps between Big Media and Trump. The only one who has had it impact their life is Kaepernick, and that is because he is a grade-A dummy.
Are there any teams out there right now who want a new stadium paid for by the taxpayers? Are all their players standing?
The Las Vegas Raiders?
I wonder if they are all standing. I’d ask our resident Raiders fans to chime in, but I’m sure Raiders fans get ban-hammered right off the bat here.
Marshawn Lynch is a Raider right now, so they’re not all standing.
Slammer and Hyperion are Raiders fans. There are a few others. It is a shame really.
Another reason I want the Raiders out of that cesspool, Las Vegas is a good choice in more than one way.
I know some of the Raiders will kneel like ninnies. Lynch for one. I love the guy as a player and off field he seems like a pretty good guy and can be really funny at times. But I’m getting annoyed already with the skittles and the dancing. I doubt that all the Raiders will kneel, I don’t think Del Rio is going to be too fond of the idea, at all.
I think Lynch is a decent guy, he’s a goofy personality.
As silly as it was, the dance last week had the whole stadium rocking, which made me happy.
A tax on hotel rooms will help finance construction–but then the stadium will also be used for UNLV games.
That hotel tax may be paid for by “tax payers”–but not by the taxpayers of Las Vegas.
The rest of the money for the stadium is all coming from private hands.
Well, it seems to me if the market will support a hotel tax without a noticeable decline in visitors that the hotels would have already raised prices to the post-tax level and would be collecting that money for their own use rather than laundering tax collections to the Raiders via the government. I’m not sure why it makes sense for hotel dollars to go to the Raiders rather than the hoteliers. Maybe we could get Las Vegas visitors to break some hotel windows while they’re in town too, as that would help the glazers as well as the Raiders?
Lol, see, told you.
If the NFL is driving everyone so crazy, why not consider rugby. It’s the superior sport after all. Much more flow to the game.
I endorse this statement
If I wanted more flow, I’d watch the WNBA.
Good one
You want flow? Minnesoda has flow!
It is. I would throw a little Aussie Rules in there for variety too. There’s a tiny bit of wokeness during “Indigenous Week” but it’s feel-good rather than nauseating.
It doesn’t have anything to do with the NFL. No matter what sport becomes that popular in the USA, the SJWs and their leftist enablers will pounce immediately in an attempt to ruin it. They did it with education, with entertainment, they tried it with gaming, they’re doing it to sports and it doesn’t matter what sport it is, they’ll attempt the same.
I’m comfortable with alternative sports’ current level of popularity in the US.
I watch fake (soccer) football with wifey. I’ve actually enjoyed it. I just wish some of them would spend more time footballing and less time play acting. I mean they’re like wide receivers x 1000.
I wish professional lacrosse was outdoors.
?
I guess I was thinking of Box.
Just finished watching BBC’s Silk Road: Drugs, Death and the Dark Web. Not a woodchipper reference in it, but overall it wasn’t terrible. Statist? Yeah, but not terrible.
Other than being completely biased, that is.
“If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!”
—-Donald Trump on Twitter
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/911904261553950720
When there’s a controversy over this in San Francisco with the 49ers, it drags on and and on.
When there was a controversy that blew up over this in Cleveland, they players showed up and sang the national anthem while holding hands with the police.
I think this issue plays well for Trump in middle America/swing states. No one’s ever lost an election for sticking up for the flag–certainly not in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, western Pennsylvania, or Florida. San Francisco is one thing–have any players made a point of dissing the flag in Green Bay?
Convince those voters in those swing states that political correctness means dissing the flag and Donald Trump (rather than the NFL) is the only force in America that’s really willing to stand up for the flag, and it’s all win for Trump. Trump can’t lose on the issue. It doesn’t matter what people think in California and Massachusetts.
P.S. The armed services spend a tremendous amount of money during NFL broadcasts using the flag as a recruiting tool–and much of their target demographic is made up of young minorities. I’d be seriously pissed to see prominent players dissing their trademark on the field if I were them.
Trump’s nationalism is totes different from Obama’s “There is no red America or Blue America” nationalism because Obama sounded presidential.
That’s the thing about taking a side on a hot button issue first. The other side has to take the other side. And when your opponent is very stupid that means the left will come out against the flag, the national anthem, white people, etc.
They will write ten million think pieces next week on why America and Americans are stupid asshole racists and Trump is wrong.
No way Trump loses this fight.
To the extent that the NFL became politically correct, it was because they were afraid if they didn’t, it would hurt their bottom line. That river flows both ways.
And the protests are costing people money.
Did you see the way the fans rallied behind signing Kirk Cousins in his contract dispute?
Can you imagine the fans doing that for Kaepernick?
Can you imagine him doing ads for Coca Cola or General Motors? He can’t even get on a team. The local car dealer doesn’t even want to do ads with someone who disses the flag.
Anybody who wants to be a free agent and get a big contract someday better stand up for the flag. GMs get skewered every time they make a big free agent signing already–why piss off the fans over something that doesn’t even have anything to do with football? And free agency is valuable because so many teams can bid on you. Dis the flag, and you’ve taken almost all the teams in America off the list of people making a bid. Kaepernick can’t find anybody.
You won’t even make friends dissing the flag in progressive strongholds like New England and Seattle. Bears fans don’t want someone who disses the flag.
Maybe? I’m not totally convinced of that. What portion of the NFL’s viewing demographics were ever really into PC? Now it would seem a far bigger motivation to avoid having one’s life ruined by rampaging SJWs that never mattered to the bottom line to begin with.
The fans have always been more conservative than the NFL’s critics, but the NFL has been highly sensitive to charges of racism, not being sufficiently concerned about how the wives and girlfriends of the players are treated, etc. That’s why they get behind things like breast cancer awareness.
They don’t want players using slurs about LGBTQI+. They don’t want any John Rockers.
They want the controversy to be about who should start at quarterback.
The NFL already has the young male audience. They’re worried about the marginal supporters–women, et. al.
The NFL already has the young male audience. They’re worried about the marginal supporters–women, et. al.
If they lose lots of the former and gave very few of the latter, then…?
gain not gave
I think that’s it. The NFL does stupid things because they are stupid not because they’ve made a rational analysis of the bottom line.
The NFLs popularity has gone up because of reasons outside the decisions of its leadership. That allowed incompetent people to move to the top and think their incompetent decisions caused the popularity instead of being irrelevant to it.
Now it’s populated with dunces who either do not know or do not care about attracting an audience. They will continue to think stepping on their dick every week is a brilliant business move.
It’s all fine to play to the progs until it comes time to discuss TV contracts next year. No matter how much the network and NFL execs might like to social signal on the same things they are not going to pay as much for a product with a declining audience and that means players will see a pay cut as well.
I can’t think of any of their decisions that aren’t made with concern about what it does to their bottom line.
Drug testing, the personal conduct policy, that’s all about protecting the image of the league. If drug testing is stupid, that’s only because things have changed since that policy was introduced, and they’re doing more to hurt their own product by suspending players for failing drug tests than they’d lose by stopping testing. It’s not just that things have changed either–public opinion has changed.
And if you don’t think they’re concerned about what advertisers care about, that’s nuts. The value of selling the rights to broadcast games is a direct function of how much companies will pay to advertise during games. Sports are especially lucrative in that way, because unlike with other shows, people want to watch it live. They’re not recording it and skipping through the commercials later. And that audience tends to skew young, with young guys who don’t yet have any brand loyalty yet for things like razor blades or beer.
I haven’t seen them make too many stupid moves yet, but the NFL is not endearing themselves to advertisers or fans by standing up for the right to dis the flag. This might be over after today. I’m reading that fans in both Indianapolis and Detroit booed their own teams today for kneeling during the anthem.
http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/20800784/nfl-players-coaches-owners-kneel-lock-arms-national-anthem
No matter what the SJW staff says on ESPN, the NFL doesn’t want this. They’re not about courting controversy that splits players and fans. They’ll wise up quickly or suffer the consequences.
I’m reading that fans in both Indianapolis and Detroit booed their own teams today for kneeling during the anthem.
New England, too
Mrs 6: So, there’s some hope for the Massholes after all.
Yeah, the Massholes, the people of Seattle, the people of Chicago, all the people we think of as being lefties–they don’t want to see people dissing the flag.
The flag is so American, it’s not listed with 57 Chevys, Mom’s apple pie, and Turkey at Thanksgiving as being quintessentially American–because it’s so obvious, it doesn’t need to be said.
These elitists have gotten way ahead of themselves.
I’m a die hard Redskins fan from wayback, but you think the people of Dallas want to see their team dissing the flag? They’re really not that much different from people in Massachusetts on the flag.
Anybody else remember the week after 9/11 when every house in America had an American flag hanging in front of it? Remember when almost every car had an American flag flying from their driver’s side window? That was in New York City and Boston and Dallas and . . .
These people turning football into a protest against the American flag are the people you invited over for Thanksgiving–and they piss on the turkey in front of your kids and talk shit about America. That’s not popular anywhere–but in the minds of certain elitists.
Trump won’t lose a vote in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, or Florida because of this, and regular people in Massachusetts, Seattle, Oregon, and New York City aren’t impressed by people dissing the flag either. People in New York City associate the flag with firefighters running up the stairs to save people in the WTC while the building was collapsing all around them.
Should be a no-brainer. Jerry Jones and other owners will put a stop to this quietly and quickly, I’m sure.
Somehow, during the Obama administration, people came to imagine that everything we’ve always been changed. It was really just the last four years of the Obama administration, too. In the first four years, Obama raided state legal medical marijuana clinics hundreds of times and maintained that “marriage is between a man and a woman”.
The world hasn’t been turned upside down. Dissing the flag is not suddenly popular with ordinary people because Barack Obama or Donald Trump.
Because if you take a chance on a talented enough player, it might benefit your team more than hurt it. The Eagles took a huge PR hit when they signed Michael Vick after he got out of prison, but it was a hit they felt might payoff because Vick had a boatload of talent, and worked himself back into a starting role. Kaepernick doesn’t appear to be the player he once was when he went to the Super Bowl, so owners won’t take as big a risk.
That’s the thing: the people who support Colin K. and the other douchetards no standing weren’t watching anyway! Why pander to people who aren’t and will never be, your customers?
You want a winning team–that translates into money, and although Kaepernick had a down season, he’s still better than a lot of starting QBs in the NFL.
There’s just too much baggage that comes along with him that has nothing to do with anything happening on the field.
It’s more or less the same reason the Patriots released Aaron Hernandez. When the fans get to the point that they’d rather have a weaker team than add or keep a certain player, the general manager and the owner have to acknowledge that and make their decisions accordingly.
It happens a lot, too, with coaches and general managers.
When Charley Casserly picked Mario Williams ahead of both Reggie Bush and Vince Young, he was eviscerated for it by the Houston fans–especially since Vince Young was a hometown product.
Casserly was right! Mario Williams was a four time pro-bowler–and he’s still in the league. Reggie Bush’s legs were made out of brittle plastic, and Vince Young was a lunatic. Vince Young was ultimately released by the Titans for lunatic behavior!
But once the fans start calling for your head, it doesn’t really matter whether you’re right or wrong. The customer is always right. So Casserly was given his walking papers.
It’s not that the NFL doesn’t care about performance. It’s that they’re not just a competitive football league–they’re in the entertainment business. If the fans are booing your own players, your own coach, your general manager, etc., it really doesn’t matter if they’re wrong or right on the competitive football metric. You’re failing on the entertainment metric.
There are very few people out there, on a percentage basis, who find dissing the flag entertaining, I’ll tell you that. If they find it entertaining, it’s because that’s what the bad guy does–before the good guy kills him somehow.
Trump needs to shut up on this one. Do not get in the way of your enemy when he’s destroying himself.
Be careful what you wish for.
Dance, monkeys! I shall be entertained!
“INSULTER-IN-CHIEF”
That’s how Stepahoopulis’ stand-in opened the show.
TBF, those are some pretty small shoes to fill.
Pro tip: You can watch football with the sound off.
Yea, but then I have no one to safely berate while drunk. I mean, do you want me to end up beating my wife and kids? Joe Buck, believe it or not, has a purpose.
Joe Buck is the white people of NFL commentators.
Has SI always been indistinguishable from Salon?
“Hey, ESPN, hold my chardonnay and watch *this*!”
Watch for the NFL to make this controversy quietly go away. It won’t happen through official channels. The owners will talk to their coaches and general managers. The coaches will talk to the players. The general managers will talk to the agents. The agents will talk to the players, too.
Meanwhile, advertisers don’t want to pay for endorsements from people who dis the flag either. For goodness’ sake, the Olympics are coming.
This issue will quietly go away.
I think you overestimate the NFLs competence.
The NFL has done a fantastic job killing the golden goose since Fuhrer Goodell* took over. Money has kept rolling in out of inertia, but I think they’ve really hit that peak.
*Brochetta is proud to say that he was the first to start using the title of Fuhrer for Goodell back in 2008. Even before he suspended Roethlisberger.
I suspect the rule changes have made the sport less brutal and less attractive to new fans.
There can’t be any new Howie Longs, Dexter Manleys, Lawrence Taylors, Reggie Whites, anymore. Nowadays, people tune out when their team is on defense. It’s just not that exciting anymore. The most exciting plays used to happen on 3rd and 1.
You’re not going to see Theisman’s leg broken. You’re not going to see Dan Fouts get off the turf looking through his ear hole. There will never be another Billy Kilmer, a QB who seemed to be at his best with blood running down his face.
NFL football used to have th thrill of high flying offenses–and the excitement of cage fighting in the UFC. Of course the brand suffers for that.
They are competent on occasion. Getting the Players’ Association to give away their CTE litigation rights for what was essentially a handful of magic beans, was masterful.
A billion USD total. Divided over 32 teams. That’s what, one game’s gate, counting suite rentals and concessions? In exchange for putting permanently to bed, some of the potentially nastiest health-related litigation since tobacco?
Outstanding lawyering.
Who else do you market your Zyklon B to?
What does it take to advertise on Facebook to people who openly call themselves “Jew haters” and want to know “how to burn Jews”? About $10 and 15 minutes, according to what the investigative nonprofit ProPublica recently uncovered.
After much outcry over this revelation, Facebook’s chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, called the anti-Semitic ad targeting “a fail on our part,” promised to put more human reviewers in place, and said the company “never intended or anticipated this functionality being used this way — and that is on us.”
Some of Facebook’s users may find it even harder to accept what happened. How could the site that we use to keep in touch with friends and family, share baby pictures, and keep up with politics and volunteer work be made so easily to cater to the interests of Nazis?
But anyone who understands how Facebook works shouldn’t have been surprised. That’s because the same digital platform that offers us social interaction, news, entertainment and shopping all in one place makes its money by making it cheap and easy to send us commercial or political messages, often guided by algorithms. The recent scandal is just a reminder.
I think we should make everybody who drives on ROADZ sign a loyalty oath, just to be sure no UnGoodThinkers are able to travel freely among us.
‘but of course’
expecting people to raise a big family in america without govt help? unpossible.
re: the baseball kneeler:
et tu, SI?
I notice with a raised a eyebrow that these African American players wouldn’t take a knee for gay marriage. What’s up with that?
I like how avoiding stupid controversies that soil your league’s brand is labeled a “stupor.”
yeah, he casts baseball’s lack of obnoxious-woke as a *bad thing*, as though somehow America was being deprived of its rightful Drama Queening.
Everything must be political. Every thought, every decision, every utterance.
a man who ran on a campaign of white nationalism and who has courted the support of white supremacists
Fun fact: a lie + a lie != the truth
The most anybody can come up with is that Donald Trump talked to voters about concerns they had and those voters were predominantly white (… so is the country), and that he failed to denounce the media’s token representatives of “white supremacism” with as much speed and vigor as the media demanded in their game of shifting goalposts.
There were no actual policy planks of “white nationalism”, no attempts to elevate whites above anyone else, no real mention of race as an important factor in anything, etc. This narrative is entirely media created.
“he failed to denounce the media’s token representatives of “white supremacism” with as much speed and vigor as the media demanded”
A charge that would have been made regardless of his timing.
I know. I couldn’t find a good way to say that, but that’s what I meant by “their game of shifting goalposts”. The media was telling him to play limbo while they were constantly moving the bar.
Although I don’t follow strong man stuff, YouTube felt like recommending me this podcast of Eddie Hall. For some reason i found it interesting, although my standard beef with p[podcasts stands way to goddamn long.

Apparently he’s the only known man to deadlift 500 kg. I deadlifted 520 but sadly I didn’t get it on camera
And which Imperial unit would that be in?
That’s ~1100 lbs.
Why the fuck would you ask the Secretary of the Treasury about foreign policy and the nuclear option?

Vermont teacher fired after leading third graders in Nazi salute
That is ridiculous. Clearly you should start them earlier than the 3rd grade.
The Jesuits have at least a 3 year head start with THEIR indoctrination.
One day we’ll look back on this and think this substitute teacher was a comic genius.
Up until the “Heil Hitler” it was just a traditional Bellamy salute.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellamy_salute
I am calling BS on that.
This is like the guys that believe in STEVE SMITH and desperately want you to believe in STEVE SMITH also. They cant find STEVE SMITH or any evidence of him so they dress up in a monkey suit and fake some blurry photos or video and then try to sell you on that.
Hitler and the Nazis are dead and gone. A relic of history. This whole ‘Nazi hiding under every bed’ nonsense is about as realistic as claiming Genghis Khan is going to make a comeback.
No more mountains of skulls of the enemy? Sad!
The people wanted redheads and redheads they shall get!

I can’t choose 4 or even 5 favorites so I’ll leave it to you pervs.
I like them all. at least 30-40% seem like they’re just tinting their hair tho. no complaints! just that my irish genes instantly identify a faker
I’d be willing to check curtain/drape color shades.
Much better list than usual. Very few overtatted junkie wannabes. #10’s bull ring is very disappointing.
Bull rings on anything other than 300 pound biker dudes should be illegal.
As well as #21. She has a kind of classy look until you notice that nose ring.
This is the first time I’ve noticed those stupid bull ring nose piercings on women Q posts.
2, 10, and 21 are excluded from the orgy on account of those stupid piercings.
I missed the one in #2. WTF?
13, 18 and 22
That is all.
9 is the winner, but wow…what a group of beauties.
Is it extra pervy if the first thing I focused on was their eyebrows? Or is that normal pervy?
Normal pervy. Blondes and redheads I always look at the eyebrows first…and we all know I am the model for normal.
One of many ways to check if she is a natural redhead. True, she could dye her eye brows too, but how often do people do that?
I hate nose rings. Ruining a perfectly good redhead
If they ain’t got freckles, they’re probably fake.
13. Those are some looooong legs!
Thanks, Q!
Chief of Berkeley Police sits by as leftist takes over her own press conference. Wow.
Non-partisan, loyal public servants.
Oops.
I’m mildly shocked that Milo hasn’t been demonetized.
Stupid question – what is the monetization here? The “Subscribe” button? I block ads, so maybe I’m missing something.
He had an ad playing before the video. Pretty sure YT stops playing ads when they demonetize you.
I guess my ad blocker is doing its job then. Cool.
No, ads can continue to play on your videos, but Youtube gets the money instead of you.
As I undertand it, any ads that are shown don’t accrue credit to the video poster, Google confiscates the whole pot. It’s one step short of ‘othering’, which hides the video from a poster’s video index, and I think, eliminates the entry for search purposes.
But they’re not actually censoring you, because if someone knows the URL, they can get to the content.
gl1b’s definition sounds more likely though.
I’m honestly not 100% sure, as I have never tried to do it. The YouTube support site seems to indicate that they only turn on ads once you decide to monetize.
If Google really does what you mentioned, that’s an incredibly shitty business practice, but i wouldn’t put it past them.
I used to do affiliate marketing, and I spent a lot of time on various discussion forums learning about it. Damn near everyone in the affiliate marketing business will tell you that Google is a pain in the ass to work with. One guy summed it up quite well: “It sucks to work with Google because they don’t see themselves as a business partner; they see themselves as the dictator of how e-commerce will be done.”
I’ve disliked Google for quite a while. The only services I use are Hangouts, Gmail, and occasionally Maps, and I don’t think those services are their big moneymakers.
That’s interesting to hear. I’m in digital marketing (primarily paid search) and Google is pretty good to us and all of their systems are well thought-out and fair.
They do try to sell us services a ton, but hey they’re running a business.
Of course, they may just not like affiliates. I know we get into arguments with affiliates occasionally 🙂 YMMV
Do you know that he hasn’t? Lots of channels have been Demo’d but still run as tho nothing’s changed.
they apparently even Demo’ videos with Wrongthink-people in them, even if the content isn’t in any way in violation of anything
http://www.dailywire.com/news/20788/youtube-demonetizes-another-dissident-channel-robert-kraychik
That shitstain who initially speaks on that video, Dan Mogulof, is the most likely architect of the whole project to ensure that this Free Speech Series doesn’t happen. The whole story is a case study of how bureaucracies stonewall the ‘unacceptable’.
And it’s not new. A friend of mine back in the 80’s had this kind of bullshit thrown at him when he was an undergrad at the LSE.
That same woman was on tucker carlson last february

i’m pretty sure everyone in berkeley knows who she, yvette fellaca, etc are. they know their steez, and they let them run wild because they’re terrified that if they tell them to shut up that they’ll lose their jobs.
You’re right, that is her. My brain just turns them all into Charlie Brown’s teacher.
This was something TOS was good about; no more taxpayer subsidies to sports of any type!
http://amp.usatoday.com/story/16146473/
As the left becomes more and more bold taking over old cultural institutions, there is a market opportunity for alternatives. Fox Sports remains dedicated to sports without the BS (so far as I can tell); what else is in the offing? Will it come to fruition as similarly structured “old-guard” media properties or will it be more subversive, the way blogs and other alternative news outlets have sprung up on the internet? Interesting times…
Barstool Sports is a good site (hat tip to Reasonoids)
My experience with SBNation blogs is that their moderators go to great lengths to keep the discussions apolitical. Some are less successful than others (their Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs sites in particular come to mind), but in general they’re a good bet if you want “just sports” without all the lefty posturing.
Meh, the college football SBNation sites are partially or fully infected with SJW writers and moderators. A lot of the original writers for these sites were college journo students trying to get “in” with a company like Vox (which runs SBNation).
Fair enough. I don’t really anything outside the soccer and baseball sites there.
First Deutschland exit poll estimates are in, via Bloomberg:
The ARD exit poll has a couple of surprises: Merkel’s CDU/CSU is well in the lead but with less support than the final opinion polls were suggesting — it’s actually the worst result since 1949. And the AfD has done better than expected and will be in the Bundestag for the first time as clearly the third-largest bloc. Schulz’s Social Democrats are set for their worst-ever postwar result. Merkel would be able to continue the grand coalition with the SPD or pursue the untested Jamaica option with the Free Democrats and the Greens, who have done better than expected.
German AFD Takes 13.5% to Win First Bundestag Seats: Exit Poll
Easily grabbing third.
Their election results map always surprise me, like Bavaria is always a solid wall of CSU. It’s like they don’t even gerrymander.
They’re all drunk.
CSU is under 40% this time around, which is a huge shock.
Interestingly enough, a lot of the support for AFD comes from the eastern section of Berlin. That means one of 2 things, NAZIS! or some of them still remember communism and don’t want more (Merkel).
In the former East Germany it was AfD 27%, Merkel’s CDU/CSU 24%. Pretty wild.
Not very woke in the East, still.
Whycome Zuckerberg couldn’t stop the FAKE NOOZ
I’m looking for the numbers for the other parties (especially the ex-SED) in the east.
Ah, I just found them:
CDU: 26,5
AfD: 21,5
Linke: 16,5
SPD: 14,5
FDP: 8
Grüne: 6
I am reading 27% for AfD in former DDR, 24% for CDU.
Merkel’s CDU/Csu to Win 32.5%
SPD Set to Win 20.0%
AFD Set to Win 13.5%
FDP Set to Win 10.5%
Left Party Set to Win 9.0%
Greens Set to Win 9.5%
Libertarian-ish party gets 10%….what do you say about that Sarwark?
I say Linda is far more attractive than Nick.
Wasn’t the FDP practically left for dead at the last election? What a comeback.
The buzz over the last half hour is that the Jamaica coalition is more likely than the grand coalition. That would be huge for the FDP. They would get finance minister for sure
That is huge, wow. Poor SPD. ?
Schulz schließt große Koalition aus
SPD head Martin Schulz shoots down the idea of another grand coalition, saying the party will “strengthen deomcracy” in opposition.
I don’t understand why another “Grand Coalition” isn’t in the works. … Oh, I’m reading now that the SPD have ruled it out. Huh.
They beat Die Linke, all that matters.
FDP are libertarianish? I don’t even know what this shit means anymore.
Well to pick one thing they want to implement a “one in, two out” rule that for every bureaucrat hired by the govt they have to fire two. Yes the same as Trump. But it is a good principle I’d say.
That’s interesting. I could go along with that.
If Germany votes Merkel then doesn’t it say Germans aren’t worried about her immigration policies?
Merkel is actually something of an outlier in her own party on immigration. The Bavarian head of the CDU for example wants very different immigration policies. This was a vote for parliament so not just a referendum on Merkel.
Except that they aren’t voting Merkel. Her party lost quite a bit of support.
Ah.
I watched “Small enough to Jail” last night on PBS.
Vance Cyrus is a cunt.
should I? It’s on Prime right now
I’d like to point out that in my football piece yesterday, my picks were supposed to appear in boldface in the team matchup sections. Goddamn Russians, always ruining shit with their hacking. Anyway, here are my picks:
1. Denver @ Buffalo
2. Oakland @ Washington
3. Kansas City @ LA Chargers
4. Baltimore @ Jacksonville
5. Pittsburgh @ Chicago
6. Cincinnati @ Green Bay
7. Cleveland @ Indianapolis
8. Houston @ New England
9. Seattle @ Tennessee
10. Miami @ NY Jets
11. Dallas @ Arizona
12. Atlanta @ Detroit
13. Tampa Bay @ Minnesota
14. New Orleans @ Carolina
15. NY Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles
Dude I wouldn’t pick the Colts to beat the FOX NFL Sunday commentary squad.
And I have a Colts flag flying in front of my house.
Sure, you put the Jacksonville pick in after the score was 44/7. Cheater!
Right? I’m surprised he didn’t include his pick for the Thursday game, too.
Looks like the Ravens either didn’t eat a hearty breakfast or they kneeled too hard.
They say the Jews are good with money, I’ve always heard that.
Watching Nick Kyrgios holding his own against “smug prick” Federer (thanks to one of the Glibs for that!). Of course Kyrgios is a dick too but sometimes I have to root for the underdog.
It’s a fucking exhibition.
Screw everybody who played and then bitches about the length of the season.
Seems that Ted Cruz isn’t a fan of this latest Obamacare replacement either.
Ted Cruz is a douche nozzle. But sometimes he accidentally gets it right, for all the wrong reasons of course.
Lyin’ Ted! I think he was getting sad being just an afterthought. But:
Be that as it may, I really don’t see what change is going to break the impasse. Unless people cave with more time and they just end up passing the same thing on the table now with, at best, a few modifications.
Hey all!
So Korean thanksgiving is coming up in a week. It’s falling on a weird date and we’ve got a crazy 10 days off.
I’m flying to Kazakhstan next Saturday. I’m going into Astana, plan on staying for 2 days before taking a 20 hour sleeping train south to Almaty. I’ll be there for 4 days before I fly back to Incheon.
I’ve got some loose ideas about what I want to do, but does anyone have any personal experience? Shit I must see or do or explore?
Any thoughts would be helpful and lovely.
Thanks, y’all.
Can’t help you except that I seem to remember Astana and Almaty are dangerous places, if Command and Conquer: Generals can be trusted.
Kazakhstan? Nah.
But if you want to know about hotels in Palm Desert, I’m your man.
Sounds like a fun trip. Going to a, um, less developed country on vacation makes coming home feel like another vacation.
I’ve been to Almaty once. But it was 25 years ago. I’m sure the place has changed a lot. I recall the central farmers market was impressive.
Got nothing. Let us know what you ended up doing!
Any thoughts would be helpful and lovely.
After a bit of thought, I recommend you change your tickets and go to Fiji.
The political opinions of sports players are as interesting as the political opinions of any other celebrity: not at all.
Athletes rank slightly below musicians and slightly above gender studies majors in my hierarchy of whose political opinions to not listen to.
Is a fuck not given still a fuck?
Oh, and whichever engineering genius thought a fucking warning light for pad thickness was a good idea, bite my ass.
My only reaction to this NFL kneeling nonsense is that it further confirms my general opinion about Trump opponents: Trump is the best thing that could’ve happened to declining institutions like the news media, the Democratic and Republican Parties, and the NFL. He provides a pretext for these people to grab attention that they would never have otherwise. Which is why, whatever they say publicly, none of them really want him removed from office: at this point, he’s the only thing (barely) keeping them relevant.
Everything must be political. Every thought, every decision, every utterance.
Anything less smacks of… unseriousness.
If choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
With us or against us…
Galdern it.
So the kneeling protest was started by Kap over police brutality, but not at all because he made it about race.
Now its over trump being in charge? these guys get paid by the million, go donate or run for office.
make less things illegal so there is no chance or incentive for police to interact with you.
The police can and will kill when they stop people, and the litany of not guilty verdicts should tell everyone the “training and body cams” argument is ridiculous.
Less laws also helps all people, black or white or whatever. but no millionaire athlete will say anything close to that.
Look at the case of Freddie Gray: the mayor was black, the police commissioner was black, and several of the officers directly involved were black. If these idiots look at that situation and still stick to the racial narrative, there’s no hope for them.
Trying to avoid controversy or trying to stir it up?

For the Vatican watchers, via Instapundit …
Clergy and Lay Scholars Issue Filial Correction of Pope Francis: The initiative, the first time such a mechanism has been used since the Middle Ages, accuses the Pope of “propagating heresies” and respectfully asks that he teach the truth of the Catholic faith in its integrity.
Thanks
Dayum.
Signed by the Bishop of the Society of St Prius X, my bullshit meter just pegged. Yeah, I’m sure this will get any traction.
Isn’t he the guy who organized the Auto-da-fe? 🙂
Hilarious ineptitude by the Giants just before the half:
1st down – completion to OBJ inside the five
2nd down – completion to Sterling Shepard at the goal line, can’t extend the ball over
3rd down – incomplete in end zone. Shepard catches ball, but falls down out of bounds and ball pops out (the old Calvin Johnson rule)
4th down – neither team has a time out; the Giants try a run up the middle and it’s stuffed in the backfield. When the defense doesn’t have a TO, use some play action or shift the formation, something. Nope…just went straight ahead and got throttled. LOL
So, any of you watch this Canuckistan league of foozball? I was just channel flipping and saw it’s on right now. The names of the team are Stampeders and Roughriders, lol. Them Canadians, they funny guys!
