First, they came for the Anne Frank Halloween costumes, and I said nothing because they didn’t make anything in my size…
The costume, a blue button-up dress, is accessorized with a green beret and a brown shoulder bag.
It’s “reminiscent of the kind of clothing” young girls are likely to have worn in the 1930s and 1940s, said a product description below the image of a model — a brown-haired girl with a smile on her face and her hand on her waist.
For $25 (plus shipping), “your child can play the role of a World War II hero” on Halloween, it promised.
But the costume portraying Anne Frank, the Jewish teenager whose diary chronicled the horrors of the Nazi regime, was called offensive by numerous critics, including major advocacy groups. So Halloweencostumes.com, an online retailer, removed the item from its website, and its spokesman apologized, saying offending people wasn’t the company’s intention.
Poet attacked online by enraged high school students after her work appears on exam
Students have been told to apologise to an award-winning Indigenous writer by the head of the government agency that administers the HSC.
David de Carvalho, the chief executive of the NSW Education Standards Authority, condemned the treatment of Ellen van Neerven who was subjected to abusive comments and messages from students who had sat the English exam.
“I am appalled by the abuse of the author,” Mr de Carvalho told Fairfax Media. “This is a completely inappropriate response and I hope those involved see fit to apologise to Ms van Neerven.”
The controversy was sparked after students sitting the HSC English exam on Monday were asked to analyse Ms van Neerven’s poem Mango – one of three unseen texts included in section 1 of English Paper 1.
Students were asked to “explain how the poet conveys the delight of discovery”.
The delight of discovery you hate poetry.
A weird low-res version of the poem in question.
Totally Not-Gawker Blames the Irish in this Spicy Take
Amid the stories of DACA repeal, ICE ambushes at court hearings, and an immigrant snitch line gone haywire, you probably didn’t notice that earlier this month Paul Ryan and members of the Trump cabinet took meetings with an interest group trying to cut a deal for a special subset of America’s 11 million undocumented residents. They’re no SuperPAC, but what they lack in spending power they make up for in charming brogues—it’s the Irish! Every American’s favorite nationality for at least once a year!
Click through for some extra-special “I’m Irish, so it’s OK for me to be a hate-filled turdato.”
Every prog I know is posting this gun waiting period study that claims (in contrary to previous studies) that waiting periods would prevent 1000 murders per year. Which is incredibly significant since are only about 10,000 gun homicides per year.
https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/10/gun-waiting-periods-prevent-hundreds-of-murders-according-to-45-year-study/
How could they even study that? That’s like claiming co2 emissions affect rainfall totals. There are way too many variables to control for.
Well. They went back 45 years to when the crime rate is really really bad. They look at the homicide rate in all states then. Then they look at how the homicide rate changed in states w/ waiting periods versus states that do not.
Voila.
There are some obvious flaws to this methodology, but I’m looking for some real zingers.
Apparently, the presence of guns in neighboring states is enough to completely undermine Chicago, but the presence of waiting periods reduces the murder rate by 10%.
1000 is a lot of homicides.
‘Deaths By Another Means’ created or saved!
Suuuuure they do.
isn’t 8k of those gang or drug related? probably not legal guns.
Yup. Nobody knows because it’s so difficult to study but somewhere between 3 and 15% of crimes are committed with legal guns.
That alone makes this incredibly unlikely.
This is ridiculous. If I wanted to kill you, why would I buy a gun from a dealer that will document the purchase, call NICS, probably have a video surveillance system and hold it for x number of days?
I would just go ahead and buy it from a crack dealer and kill you.
*gives mexsharp a complimentary 20 rock with gun purchase*
If I wanted to kill you, I’d hit you with my car.
We should put a 10 day waiting period following the purchase of a new car….
The fact that some states don’t let you sign contracts on certain days and by extension can’t buy a car or similar toys because the place is closed is bad enough.
A few days to cool off and think things through may or may not be enough to prevent hundreds of homicides each year, according to a new study in PNAS.
Honestly, that’s the only claim they make. By showing how empty it is, you can see how misleading the whole thing is.
That is total horseshit. The murders in which firearms are used not associated with gangs or habitual criminals are actually pretty rare. The vast majority are gang members under 25 using an illegal gun. Waiting periods will have zero effect on that.
As for suicides there is no way to tell. A friend of mine had a brother commit suicide day before yesterday. How did he do it? He starved and drank himself to death. It took two years but it was obvious to me all along that the man was trying to kill himself and I had told his family a number of times. They knew it too but there wasn’t any way to stop him.
People who are determined to kill themselves are going to kill themselves.
Once again gun grabbers lie.
I don’t care about suicide.
Damn. That takes some serious dedication. I think if I was gonna go that route I’d keep the drinking but skip the starving. I’d triple cheeseburger and chocolate cake my way to an early grave long before I’d try the anorexic approach.
Wouldn’t work. As soon as you eat a triple cheeseburger, you immediately realize that it’s great to be alive.
Yeah, it is pretty sad. Personally I think the guy was railroaded into prison by an ex-wife with child abuse allegations. He did ten years even after the kid grew up and recanted and pointed her finger at the mom.
I guess the guy just couldn’t live with his powerlessness to fight the injustice of it all so when he got out he just drank himself into a coma over and over again until he went into one and didn’t come out.
He did ten years even after the kid grew up and recanted and pointed her finger at the mom.
And what’s become of this wife-of-the-year candidate? My guess is nothing. In effect, she killed him and got away with it.
I dont know. That family has a lot of issues. I have a very casual friendship in one of them and sometimes I even steer clear of him.
This is the second one in that family. The first one had a wife that couldn’t keep her skirt down so one day he grabbed a pistol and ran around the house screaming…cops showed up and there was a brief standoff. He finally agreed to surrender, set the .357 on the edge of the bed next to where he was sitting and when he stood up to surrender the cocked pistol fell onto the floor, went off and shot him straight up the ass. The bullet nearly came out of the top of his head. He was stone dead before he hit the floor.
If I had decided my life wasn’t worth living after all that, I tend to believe that I would just go ahead and take the bitch with me. I suppose he held off because of the kid.
That’s a nightmare scenario. I would drink myself to death too.
This is a large chunk of overdoses. People who want to kill the elves but do it in a way that’s not really suicide.
People who want to kill the elves
Can’t we just stick to stripping them?
Ima guess that is NSFW.
Do I look like HM?
Spoiler: I wish…
See, Juvenile? That’s how you do it. You stick with the classics.
You anime guys are twisted. I thought that I was a weirdo but I’ve got nuthin on you fuckers, Praise Internet!
Not atypical for DT-suffering level boozers. The alcohol provides sufficient calories, if not nourishment, to keep them going, and they eventually lose interest in anything other than staying drunk. Horrible to witness, as you all know.
I agree with this, but I’ll try to convince someone not to do it. If they really want to do it, it’s not very hard for even the insane to put themselves in a situation where no one can stop them.
People who are serious about killing themselves tend to use tools that will get the job done. Absent guns, suicide numbers won’t change. People serious about suicide will just use other tools that will get the job done.
If only there was some way to compare rates of suicide and attempted suicide between gun owners and non-gun-owners (considering males and females separately).
If the attempted rates are the same, but the actuals are different, guns may increase the fatality of suicidal tendencies. If they’re roughly the same, guns just displace other highly-fatal methods, and people who are just half-assing it as a cry for help don’t use them even if the option is available.
Of course it is. All of these gun violence studies are 100% bullshit. You know why? They’re done by leftists. Leftists lie, it’s what they do best. They don’t care about the validity of the studies, the persons who conducts them are told up front before they receive funding to dick around with a fake study that this is the results you will get. And they will get those results. I can input a bunch of data and get any results I want to depending on how I manipulate that data. Leftists lie, the only thing that matters is how they can use those lies to push through their agenda.
Shameless self promotion
My friend’s dad did the same thing. Diabetic and drank himself to death during the course of a hospitalization and self-release. Just wanted to die doing what he knew best.
I’ll bet if we increased gun waiting periods…say, indefinitely, we could save even more lives!!
/proglogik
No we couldn’t. It’s nearly impossible in Brazil to buy a gun legally. Now go compare the homicide by gun rate there compared to the USA.
it doesn’t pass the smell test to claim 1000 less homicides b/c somebody couldn’t get their gun immediately. DC plus 10 states including Illinois and California already have mandatory waiting periods.
or you could just ad hominem the fuck out of it and point to the Berkeley relationship between the study’s pro-gun control editor and the PNAS board member who approved it for publication.
the editor also conducted a study extolling the virtues of alcohol taxes. Phil loves him some central authority control of others.
It definitely has an odor of BS
There were around 8100 murders with firearms in 2014. Figuring that 80% are perpetrated by habitual criminals, that leaves you with about 1600 murders that are committed by people without an apparent criminal record.
The lack of a criminal record for some of those 1600 almost certainly means that some portion of them are habitual criminals who till that point just hadn’t been caught. Not even going to try an estimate that.
Of course that 1600 includes murderers in states with waiting periods and without. Even if we are generous and say all 1600 are in state w/o waiting periods it still strains credibility to claim that you’ll reduce that 1600 by 60% with a waiting period.
like most statistical abortions, this is just another that will be refuted in a few weeks but no news feed will bother to cover the criticisms.
Here is a fun counter. Count every domestic abuse case in a state with waiting times and say that number of women were victims because they had to wait to buy a gun. Here, I’ll do the study now…11 million.
Was that study based on this authoritative documentary?

Ummmm…there are a fair amount of undocumented Irish immigrants in Chicago. They overstayed their visa and found out there is beer and potatoes in America, too. Maybe rich white liberals should talk to immigrants beyond Conchita that cleans their overpriced condo in DC
God damn it. I didn’t read the article. Now my comment makes no sense.
If it makes you feel better I didn’t read it either, so your comment makes perfect sense to me.
It does. Thank you

Yeh, it reads okay but it doesn’t mean it should be above criticism from those who may know.
My love of poetry was strangled in the womb. It sucks, I don’t even want to get it.
They made the mistake of comparing her to a monkey. It was in reference to the ol’ monkey on a typewriter pounding out a novel quip but apparently the learned heads in the school system are unfamiliar with that and saw it as a racist remark. I bet those same morons can recite ‘from each according to their ability…’ in their sleep.
Knowing it’s Australia, is the author of Aboriginal descent? Not that fear of being thought racist would stop an irritated teenager from commenting on a shitty school test.
And since when did teenage verbal assholery rise to the level of a moral panic?

Nonsense. Last time I took my daughter to the art museum there was an exhibit that was a pile of apple candies. She asked why it was a pile of individually packaged candies, being I didn’t have a better answer I told her the artist was lazy, talentless hack and just made a mess on the floor. Then I took a candy and gave it to her.

For my fellow gamer-Glibs:
The British Parliament is Examining the Loot Box Model in Video Games
I’m not a huge fan of governments getting involved with the regulation of videogame content. That being said, I also don’t like the fact that Middle Earth: Shadow of War is a single-player game with a long-drawn out grind to encourage the purchase of microtransactions before you can get the “real” ending. ME:SoW also has a ranked multiplayer mode that is basically pay-to-win since you can buy legendary orcs to defend your fortress. The kicker, everything you buy is random… so your not sure if you’re opening up a box full of shit or something good, which engages that sweet, sweet dopamine release to get people hooked.
I don’t want governments stepping in to stop this, but I with the ESRB would do something like require AO ratings on games that have random loot box purchases. Its not a principled stance, I just want the shit out of my games so they can stop fucking up the pacing of otherwise excellent games.
As a video game developer, let me assure you that they are indeed completely gambling in reality. The design of these games is even inspired by the psychology behind gambling.
Nevertheless…
so?
Something something think of the children something white privilege something something Anita Sarkeesian.
Its not the gambling part that bothers me, its the fact that microtransactions are ruining pacing of otherwise good games to encourage the purchases. That being said, I’d be more okay with it if these weren’t blind purchases. I understand that videogames still cost $60 (despite all the add-on season pass/gold bundle stuff you can purchase), and development costs have increased substantially… so I’ll buy a thing or two from the online store if I know what I’m buying. But loot boxes and pay-to-win piss me off.
Not to mention now its drawing the ire of governments with gamers cheering it on like idiots.
otherwise good games
Middle Earth: Shadow of War
Yeah, I think I found your problem.
Its been fun so far, but the pace is extremely slow… so much so that I doubt I’ll end up finishing it before I get bored. Which is a damn shame.
Wow, I had no idea. What games/house, if you want to share?
IIRC, Nevada law bars slots and other electronic games designers from using a lot of the reinforcement mechanisms from video gaming. I don’t remember the specifics, nor where in Nevada’s or individual city ordinances they’d reside.
Sure, try and regulate Magic: The Gathering as a gambling game and get destroyed by a wave of angry neckbeards. Cause if you think SoW is bad, the entire CCG model for the past 25 years has revolved around random loot boxes for money.
You can have my tiny bits of overpriced cardboard when you putt them from cold Cheetos stained hands!
This one weird trick totally revolutionizes gaming!
As a wee nerd I delighted in both cheetos and gaming as you might expect. But I really couldn’t stand the cheeto dust coating everything like an orange ash cloud over dork Pompeii so I would pour a huge bag of cheetos into a salad bowl and then eat them with chopsticks.
Problem fucking solved.
For some reason dad was not as impressed with my ingenuity as I was.
I guess it’s true that no man is a prophet in his own village.
I tip my monocle to your ingenuity, sir, and will try it with my favorite Cheeto-like snack!
How do you putt pieces of cardboard?
Post from an Android phone.
First wave…NECKBEARDS!
Second wave…Pokemoners!
I’d say that analogy is better applied to free-to-play games than SoW, which you already spend $60 – $99 just to have the base game.
Same shit, gambling is gambling.
In particular, if I buy a starter deck of M:tG cards, do I get to rail against boosters? Demand they stop and give me individual cards?
SoW boxes are worthless trash once you stop playing SoW. At least if you bail out of Magic, you can hopefully sell some valuable cards on the secondary market.
Exactly.
As for the gambling part – I don’t really give a shit about whether or not its gambling. What I give a shit about is the fact that the incentive to monetize is ruining pacing by encouraging grinding sections to be built into games. Its annoying.
I largely don’t give a shit about the loot box existing, its whether or not it has an effect on the overall quality of the product that bothers me.
*insert obvious qualification that I don’t think governments should be regulating it and that I know that I can not buy games that do this… I know I’m just bitching about it.*
Well, at least we now know that you’re not Asian.
On MTG: Puzzle Quest (almost the only game I have time for right now) – they give you free cards on a regular basis more than once a day and you “win” various boosters all the time by just playing. Once you have one of a card, you can use it as many times as you want in as many decks – no worries about duplicates, etc. You can actually “trade” duplicates back in the system for points to build your characters.
They’ve been talking about letting you save up a certain number of random doubles/etc and letting you choose to put that value of points towards “building” a booster of specific cards you want to get (probably requires a lot more points) – but haven’t heard any details on that for a few patches now. Probably a lot more complicated to code.
I’ll admit I’ve paid for new characters – to get them a little early (and large packs of upgrade points every now and then) but you don’t actually need to spend a dime.
I don’t get this at all – I would never, ever buy such a game. I don’t gamble either, FWIW.
The crossover between MtG players and pro poker players has been interesting to see. More than I would have guessed at first glance, but I imagine the mechanics aren’t that different.
I don’t play or like MtG, but my hat is off to their rule writers and designers. They probably have some of the best people in the business working on that shit.
Yes, I know there’s tons of FAQs and such, but when I look at my crack of choice (Flames of War) I wish Battlefront would adopt Magic’s philosophy.
Yeah, seeing somebody pay off somebody else with $80k of Magic cards is still one of the more silly experiences I’ve had in life.
So don’t buy it. Let the market speak.
Unfortunately the market disagrees with me. *runs away crying*
Take heart, I think this will go the way of EA’s “Project $10”, Everything Is A MOBA, and other fads.
Alternatively, as long as you don’t have to have Latest Games NAOW!, usually Game of the Year edition will have you covered. E.g. I got my $10 out of Shadow of Mordor even though it’s a retarded game with a couple brilliant ideas and an adorably idiotic view of both Tolkien’s world (unless at the end part 3 Talion becomes a Ring-Wraith or something along those lines) and how Arkham series combat works.
Fallout4 is finally under $20 on the Steam sale. I may buy it
Some people loved that game. For me it was the first Fallout I didn’t even finish. I really hated the plot and the voiced protagonist. Maybe I should have tried the chick character because I HATED my dude character.
My problem with Fallout 4 was that there wasn’t really any choice in that game. Your only choice in that game was whether or not to do a faction’s storyline, no choices within those storylines. Also, the quests had no impact on the game world/dialogue. The setting/world design was great, though.
Old fallouts are best fallouts. Upset about that shotgun wedding? No problem! Sell you wife into slavery and begin a promising career as a pornographer. Use your porn/slave profits to place crooked bets on yourself when you start cage fighting, bonus points for using your porn name as a ring name.
4 felt like it had learned all the wrong lessons from New Vegas, which is unfortunate because I really wanted to like it like I did NV.
Ah, the joys of losing 1 Cha because your opponent bit your ear off, then punching him in the junk until he passed out. Also, setting the timer on some explosives, then walking through a crowd of those damned pick pocketing kids.
I hope you’re right, Pan. Unfortunately I don’t think a GoTY addition will fix SoW’s pacing problems, but I get what you’re saying. I am totally willing to wait on games that ask for $100 up front for the base game + dlc that hasn’t even been started yet.
I know, most absurd part of that article:
Why would you protect someone from something that they obviously want to buy? If people don’t want to buy it, they wont and the devs won’t make crap off of it.
Why would you protect someone from something that they obviously want to buy?
Ahem, 100+ years of American drug policy would like to have a word with you.
haha! fair enough.
This is bullshit. There is a very simple way to get devs to stop putting in loot boxes and microtransactions into their games; stop buying games with them.
*looks at his Overwatch skin collection*
I’m sorry, HM! I have failed everyone!
*runs out sobbing*
I agree with you sentiment, and voluntary industry associations and rating groups are a great avenue to educate customers about what to expect.
Likewise, it’d easy enough to research games before you buy them. For example I really came to despise EA’s BS in games and haven’t bought an EA game since BF2042 and this was after buying every BF game prior to that. Fuck EA.
On the other hand, PC games go on such cheap sales so often that if youre paying $5-$10 for a game, that helps the cost benefit tradeoff a lot.
I’ve never been to bother by in game sales because who cares? Typically in still on top of the scoreboard in pub games even with the “gimp ed” equipment. And that’s even more fun.
To conclude this rant. Stop buying that shit if you don’t like it. I did.
If only there was some way to avoid such cruel abuse at the hands of unscrupulous developers. Alas, the market has failed.
Where have you gone Duke Nukem?
That poem was such shite it broke the damned camera.
Students were asked to “explain how the poet conveys the delight of discovery”.
The poet doesn’t.
The poet competently depicts an image of a day of summer play, but it has nothing to do with the delight of discovery.

I know our own Mythical Libertarian Woman has talked about this, but the Young Adult novel space is scary nowadays. http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2017/10/16/kirkus_withdraws_starred_review_after_criticism.html
So those criticizing the book and/or the initial Kirkus review have not actually read the book because it doesn’t come out until January, 2018. Yet, they already know its racist, white savior, othering, whatever?
How are they any different than, say, evangelicals who railed against “The Last Temptation of Christ” despite never having seen it?
Evangelicals are icky Neanderthals.
They are woke Righsideofhistorites.
I seem to remember that every Christian group railed against that movie (not just evangelicals). Suggesting that their savior had sexual relations did not fit their religious beliefs. On the plus side, they didn’t kill anyone over their objections
Yeah, I think you are right that it went well beyond evangelicals.
Uh, those guys who burned down a theatre in France almost killed a few.
I totally missed this earlier. (Thanks for the alert, Ted.) This is not one I’d seen before. This is really scary. I… am eager to get the last two books in my series out and pray no one notices them before I bail on the genre. It’s really sad when you’re hoping your book has tiny sales, but that’s where we’re at.
OF COURSE GODDAMN JUSTINA IRELAND WAS LEADING THE CHARGE /still reading the article
It’s awful. I guess I shouldn’t feel bad that I’ve never got into reading contemporary American fiction.
What’s just as appalling as the brainless reflexive outrage of the SocMed crowd is the enormous lengths they went through to sanitize it at the publisher. Multiple, multiple reviews by POCs and committees and blah blah. I have to believe any book that went through that sausage grinder would be drek, but even pre-chewed Tales of Wokeness won’t satisfy the locust SJW hordes.
That shows SJWs are not interested in building anything, but tearing it all down. It’s bad faith all around; they don’t care about POC as much as they like pushing people around.

It’s time for Tard-Back Tuesday
Written during the government shutdown of 2013. My memory’s not what it used to be, but I’m pretty sure 90% of Americans died and our country was left a burning wasteland.
“The GOP Shutdown Is Sedition”
This is the problem when Leftists discover a new word- they improperly overuse it. I made the mistake of using the term ‘market failure’ with a Leftist friend of mine and now he declares everything a market failure. We need to stop teaching them words.
Such a shallow and pedantic way of looking at things.
just like these mashed potatoes.
We need to stop teaching them words.
There was teaching involved? Sounds like parroting a term to me.
I think the shutdown didn’t go near far enoigh. When I first heard about it, I was excited. I lost some of my enthusiasm later in the week when I noticed I was still paying sales tax on shit, and taxes were still coming out of my check. I noticed the police had someone pulled over. I was very disappointed.
Regarding the poem story:
I didn’t see the poem in the story… this sucks. I really want to read the poem now.
Ah, I missed the part where they named the poem. Looked it up and… its shit.
Poems with no meter or rhyme are not poems IMO. Spitting out random words with random line breaks doesn’t require any effort or creativity. It really is like a monkey at a typewriter. (RACIST!!) This is a huge pet peeve of mine.
Virgil hardest hit
Pretty sure dactylic hexameter still counts as meter dude. God. Do you even Latin bro?
You’ve bested me. I’ve never read the original Latin
One thing that kinda bugs me about Virgil is that when he’s quoted by Augustine in City of God, it’s in perfect meter and rhyme… in English. I thought it may be that the translator took some liberties with the translation, but Augustine dives into the meaning of Virgil’s poetry pretty deeply, and any liberties taken by the translator would’ve stuck out like a sore thumb.
I have an old edition of Beowulf that was translated into modern English in rhyme and I was really impressed. I think it can be done if you think hard about what you’re doing and have a strong command of the language, which makes it more impressive to me.
So, not a fan of Haiku then
never mind, meter, d’uh.
My poetry has meter and rhyme, it’s just non-repeating and non-terminating, so that it is confusing to PHILISTINES
Or, as Frost said, it’s like playing tennis without a net.
Your opinion is wrong and you should feel bad.
i think free-verse is still poetry
but i think, just as music without any rhythmic patterns or western-scale structure (atonal, non-structured, etc) isn’t recognized is music by most…
… i can see their POV. It still lacks the things people associate most strongly with formal music
I think the comparison to music is quite apt. Especially because I would argue that the division between poetry and song is both quite recent and quite artificial.
Poetry and prose both have certain formal rules, otherwise they are just blots on a page. I have no opinion on where one would distinguish poetry v prose, or if there is even much point to doing so, but at some point tossing out the formal rules for doing X means you aren’t doing X any more.
what you call ‘rules’ are arbitrary artistic conventions invented and reinvented as necessary in each period.
same w/ music, or painting, or whatever.
We just can’t have people write poetry without a license! Back in the times when people owned slaves, people died of typhus from reading Leaves of Grass!
Nah, but the loosening of conventions has led to a lot of laziness, for sure.
My favorite post at TOS, the one that almost got me to de-lurk, was when someone (John mebbe?) went on a rant about how terrible “modern poetry” was.
Then someone followed up by taking his post, and by creative use of carriage returns, turned it into a free verse masterpiece.
Sounds like John. I remember him bitching about “hipsters” supposedly liking the Pixies over the Rolling Stones. Everything newer than John’s coming-of-age is terrible!
Sorry, man. I like the Rolling Stones, but I’ll take the Pixies.
Uh, I also gave you a link to the poem.
Uh, I also gave you a link to the poem.
No one reads the links!!
I read it… It’s not great. It didn’t move me. I wouldn’t abuse the author over it, because it’s not pretentious.
The author of the exam question, OTOH, deserves abuse.
That poem is fucking awful. Why is this even a thing? Was it the author or the HSC that instigated the investigation, in either case it’s a waste of time
The only poetry we should accept are the ones that rhyme.
Yes, what Rufus said.
Do none of you read literature?
Only if it rhymes
Rufus, restated:
If it ain’t got no rhyme, I ain’t got the time.
It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing.
You should see the rhyming scheme for this website. It’s . . . complex.
I’m okay with freeform poetry. That’s not what irks me here, it’s that the poem just isn’t that good, it mostly overt metaphors and bad symbolism. I can and have written better poetry when drunk.

I always wondered how the Dems and media were ever going to avoid the Russia investigation turning over more information on the Clintons. Seems they won’t avoid it except by intentionally ignoring it and losing even more credibility.
FBI Uncovered Russian Bribery Plot Before Obama Approved Uranium One Deal, Netting Clintons Millions
It is just stunning to me that they cant figure out why they lost. They really do think that people only know what the media feeds them and that stories like that, that everyone knows about anyway, have no effect on voters.
She is a corrupt lying pos on par with some banana republic thug, but it’s all TrumPutin’s fault she lost.
The worst part is that the people heading up the investigation of Hillary, who saw nothing wrong with her foundation cashing tens of millions of checks from Russians while the Russians sought her approval, are not only still working for the feds, they are heavily involved in investigating Trump’s “Russian collusion”.
This was a good link and it must be reposted. It weighs heavily on my mind.

Wasn’t hard to destroy that nonsense. Reason gave up on any kind of debate over the consequences of open borders and floods of Third World immigrants. One of the many reasons I gave up on the place.
I never understood the fetish with the open borders crowd and uncivilized people. Why do they always want the poorest, most backward people imaginable? The world is infested with educated, smart and industrious people who would love to immigrate to the US. Why cant we have them?
I personally know a brilliant medical researcher in the UK who complains that because of her accent the snots she works with will never let her fulfill her career goals. I suggested she come here, no one gives a shit about her accent here. She said she has tried and tried. Where is her amnesty?
Here is a hint: Those ‘refugees’ from Dumbfuckistan are being chased out of their own countries because they are shit-stirrers. They are the ones causing problems which is why their thug governments are making life uncomfortable for them. Why would anyone think it is a good idea to bring them here?
What fetish?!?
I’m the most open borders guy here, and I don’t have that fetish.
I just want people to be free to move wherever they can make the best life for themselves.
Of course, it’s terrible when soemone is wasting their life in a savage hell-hole when they could be a productive member of our society, probably more terrible than when someone who is living in a developed country similarly being constrained (just like the robbing of a poor man tends to be more tragic than the robbing of a rich man). And the ridiculousness of it is more stark.
Of course, there is a big difference between allowing people to move freely and “bringing” people here. Which I’m sure you’re well aware of.
Jesus Fucking Christ, tarran! What did men of straw ever do to you?
I should have qualified that with ‘some’
I concede. I have had conversations with a few open borders people around here who were pretty reasonable and made good points. However, I have found them to be in the minority.
It gets to the purpose of immigration policy. In my opinion, the purpose should be to make America a better place for American citizens. It is unlikely that most illiterate peasants who don’t speak any English and may come from cultures that are fundamentally incompatible with ours are going to make this a better place for American citizens. I see no reason to open the borders to them, frankly.
There are exceptions, sure, but you can’t know in advance for illiterate peasants, etc., and you can’t make the exception into the rule. Does this pass collective judgment on whole populations? Sure. That’s what law does.
The current approach to immigration policy seems to be “What can we do to help people the most”? Which is fine, but that’s not what governments, or immigration policy, are really for.
Our current immigration policy appears to be to make laws about who can immigrate, let people break them, then argue about whether our politicians should enforce those laws.
Pretty much, because there are powerful interests who want to keep the current mess exactly the way it is.
Because they might *gaps* deflate the STEM salary bubble.

Because they might *gaps* deflate the STEM salary bubble.
There’s a bubble in fields like app development, but I don’t think that it would be a widespread impact if that bubble popped. IME, H1-B engineers/computer scientists were by and large “passable” at best. There were a few that were top tier talents, but mostly they were just code monkeys. The absolute best talent was the top 10% aspie white guys from the tier 1 schools and 2nd generation chinese and indian kids from Stanford, MIT, etc. Of course, I was only recruiting people with bachelor’s degrees, so all of the good H1-B talent could’ve been getting advanced degrees.
I suggested she come here, no one gives a shit about her accent here.
Au contraire. Her accent would be a big plus in America.
I had a British classmate here. She believed that the British accent worked for guys in America — but not for women.
Why do they always want the poorest, most backward people imaginable?
looks dejectedly toward ‘little Kentucky’ and nods in knowing melancholy agreement.
Her points on trade are mostly retarded.
Agreed. I didn’t link it because I think she’s 100% right on everything, although I think her immigration views are better than TOS.
Unlike TOS, she is at least willing to vocalize the possibility that unrestricted immigration might not be a total panacea.
Oh wow, she goes Kochtopus at the end as well, so there’s that.
Yeah, that was amusing.
That sort of thing is why I’m losing hope for her. And she started out so well…

I haven’t been around in like a week or so because I’ve been on deadline, but *puts on terrible Schwarzenegger voice* I’M BAHK.
Anyway, wanted to share some prime publishing derp: so a friend of mine emailed me about a week ago. She is a two-time NYT bestselling author. Usually when you get to that point in your career, it’s relatively easy to continue getting contracts for new books, since, you know, publishers like money. Or at least they’re supposed to.
Apparently not anymore, though. I knew she’d finished up her new book and sent it on to her agent to shop around earlier this year, but I hadn’t heard anything beyond that. She told me last week that no one was biting and her agent couldn’t figure out why. Then she talked to another author at a convention, and that author told her that the whole industry has basically shut down because they’re all so upset about Trump (“paralyzed” is how she put it). Book deals screeched to a halt in November because acquisitions editors were so terrified about living in Trump’s America that they couldn’t do their jobs. The books that are getting accepted are generally very political in nature and super reactionary, such as the one I mentioned a few weeks ago about “a girl learns her classmate is going to grow up to become Hitler 2.0 and must decide whether she should kill him now.” Non-political YA fantasy novels from NYT bestsellers apparently aren’t woke enough to get a deal anymore.
I’m really curious to see what’s going to happen. Some of the Big Five publishers were starting to crawl out of the grave the ebook revolution put them in last year but I suspect they’re going to tank again.
What is your estimate — if you have one — of the break-even to pay a graphic designer and professional editor and typesetter? Which I guess I assume a NYT Bestselling author can actually afford to front or have enough name guarantee to get someone to take a little up front and a lot on installments? Do you have to sell 100,000 books or a million?
You mean for self-publishing? She could do it. I’ve tried to convince her to do it before but she’s nervous. It’s usually only around $1000 for all those things together, and you make on average $2 per sale depending on what you price your book at. So you only have to sell 500 copies to break even. She’d probably get that back in less than a month.
$1000? That’s about 10% if what I would expect. Publishing is lucrative. Thanks for the answer.
Oh, ffs. Even libraries are managing just fine in “Trump’s America.”
I too am disappointed that Trump has not smashed the libraries
You shouldn’t be surprised, though. He finds the librarian look sexy and classy and wouldn’t dare rob those women of a job.
Theyre doing so well they can turn away Dr Seuss book donations.
Has she considered saying “Fuck it” and putting it on Kindle Store under her own name, so as to reap all the profits (minus Amazon cut, of course)? I mean, she must have some dedicated fan base who can get excited with a bit of social media hyping.
And if they want a printed copy, put it up on Lulu or another POD service?
I have told her to do so multiple times. She has a weird fear of going indie. She may wind up having to, though, since her book isn’t getting traction.
Sounds like an opening for a non-retarded, non-neurotic publishing house to fill.
That’s bizarre. I can’t imagine telling my boss that i can’t do my job because of Donald Trump, and not only still be employed, but encouraged in my delusions.
Except publishing houses are staffed by English and Humanities majors – which is a key source of progtard cancer.
The books that are getting accepted are generally very political in nature and super reactionary, such as the one I mentioned a few weeks ago about “a girl learns her classmate is going to grow up to become Hitler 2.0 and must decide whether she should kill him now.”
Wait a second. I thought that was the play that hilariously excerpted the shitty reviews. (Yes, I know somebody posted the link several days ago.)
Oh, and Juvenile Bluster wants you up above.
Juvenile Bluster wants you
This is why…
Thanks, I missed that. Just one more example of what I’m talking about.
My wife is a children’s librarian in the North Suburbs of Chicago and one of her coworkers recently inked a book deal in YA. She was talking with my wife about her book and one of the fears that she has is will her book get lambasted by the SWJ mob because she decided to include minority characters in her book. Another thing she addressed was how the SWJ’s will rip authors apart for not including or making minorities the main character in stories but then when authors do exactly that, they are ripped apart for cultural appropriation. Hopefully, my wife’s coworker will find success and none of these issues will be a detriment to her staying an author.
SWJ: Social Warrior Justice?
Anyway… I hope your wife’s coworker is spared by the mob and finds some success for her book (if its a good one). I’m sure it’ll be fine as long as its somehow a metaphor for how Trump has created a literal dystopia in modern America.
It northern suburbs it’s prolly Single White Jew
I meant SJW.
People’s obsession with Trump is unreal but for the most part, I think there’s a market for good authors aside from the screeching SJW’s.
What northern suburb?
Barrington
That’s rather surprising. I always thought of Barrington as fairly conservative.
the fears that she has is will her book get lambasted by the SWJ mob because she decided to include minority characters in her book
I also did and it’s also my biggest fear. Books take so long to reach publication in the traditional sphere that I began the series before any of this started and now I’m stuck partway through and can’t change it. Fingers crossed it works out for her.
That’s disappointing, and concerning, I’ve got a book about to be shopped by an agent now. Damn it, the industry can’t go tits up right before my break!
Good luck. Try Amazon imprints if you’re worried about the derp–for the time being, they seem to be less derpy and I’ve heard good things from authors placed with them.
Book deals screeched to a halt in November because acquisitions editors were so terrified about living in Trump’s America that they couldn’t do their jobs.
Aren’t these publishers mostly owned by big public companies? If so, how can they get away with it? I mean, I don’t think boards actually accept “we’re triggered” as a legitimate excuse for sagging sales. At least I don’t know of any time I’ve been let off so easily.
I have no clue. You would expect this, but for some reason it hasn’t happened yet.
They really are losing their minds and I bet not one of them can show something in their life that has been directly effected by Trump’s presidency.
Sports
We have black libertarians now? Does that mean we aren’t racist anymore?
We have 1.5. And I know of two others, one from Hit and Run Before the Walls Fell and one in real life.
What about 2020 LP Presidential candidate Kmele Foster?
True. I was only thinking about non-semi-celebrities.
Well known libertarians, I count: Kmele, Eric July, and That Guy T. That’s three. Still more two more than you would find at a DC cocktail party
I notice that Kmele never gets invited to the same parties as Welch and Moynihan, unless Kennedy is hosting.
Yeah, but Eric July emceed Tom Woods’ thousandth episode. Woods, though, gets accused of catering to white supremacists. Go figure
Did you go to the 1000th episode shindig? We were going to but I didn’t want to go to Orlando so we stayed here and met Brett and I’m Here To Help instead.
Nah. I thought about it, but I had other obligations and I decided to pretend to be responsible. I listened to the whole episode though and the Dave Smith set was hilarious
That episode was excellent. Dave’s podcast is quickly becoming my second favorite podcast. Tom is still number one.
My company hired a new electrician about 8 months ago. He trained with me for the first couple of months. He’s a black guy who was born in Nigeria and raised in rural mississippi. He is I think the only other open Libertarian I know. (we’re pretty rare in my parts) I like the hell out of the guy.
Lol. A Nigerian guy i know responded to being asked about banning guns after Vegas: “My family used to get robbed once a month in Lagos by men with guns. I will never not own a gun again.” He’s in Irving, Tx, so there was a lot on nodding.
I was also the only black dude in my College Republicans club during college. It was fun but slightly disturbing how many people felt they could call me an Uncle Tom and threaten me.
That’s messed up.
Awhile back I used to watch ThatGuyT on YouTube, the amount of Uncle Tom and other honest-to-god racist comments opened my eyes to just how much the American left hates minorities as soon as one steps out of line. Disturbing is a good word for it..
That Guy T has changed, man. Liberty Hangout is like an over correction from Reason
I haven’t watched him in about 3 years or so. An over correction from reason? Did he go full an-cap? I thought he was pretty close to an-cap anyway… a purest libertarian.
Sure, but has anyone ever noticed how conservative an-caps are?
Of course. Rothbardians love them some “liberty requires a culture of responsibility”. And they’re not wrong. However, you find less of that with Voluntaryists. Again, not that Vs necessary disagree, but they don’t have such a stick up their ass about it all the time.
“…how much the American left hates minorities as soon as one steps out of line.”
The democrats have always been the party of slavery and they are today. Identity politics is just another word for racist bigotry. MLK’s judging by character and not skin color is absolutely antithetical to the lefts stated policies and tactics.
No group has more flaming racist shitbags than the pinkos.
I’m eager for the lexical escalator to move again and “people/person of color” to be identified as the racist term it is. We’ll see how long it takes these lefties to start pleading about considering context/intent, even though they’ve never done the same for people using currently-verboten terms.
I remember an old rural man giving my (then-)friends and me a ride up a steep hill for a hike, and he mentioned something about giving a nice “oriental” man a lift recently. My friends acted he was some villainous, so-not-progressive racist.
Intentions only matter when you’re a leftist.
The narrative must be as fluid as possible because the goal is to accuse the opposing side as being ‘racist’, therefore evil. Even racism has now been watered down to the point that they’ve had to move on to ‘Nazi’ as the accusation. The formula is:
If (your opinion == Y && our opinion == X)
{
Y = Nazi;
}
At least that’s the javascript formula, it’s been a long fucking day.
Ugh, if I had to stare at JS all day I’d kill myself.
Mostly .NET all day and even more SQL than javascript, but there are some days. Anyway, it worked for my example.
Yeah, I shouldn’t talk since I stare at SQL all day. The uses to which we put it are heinous.
Anyone who uses the term “Uncle Tom” as a slur is an ignorant ass who never read the book or even bothered to look up the plot.
^This. If you actually read the book, you know that Uncle Tom was a noble character.
According to Wikipedia, it’s a reference to later works using the character.
Wikipedia being what it is, I’m too lazy to go through footnotes to verify…
So they did the same to Uncle Tom that they do today to any black that steps out of line.
What a surprise.

Team Red has a black supreme court justice, had a black party leader, and W had the most diverse cabinet in Presidential history. Does that mean they aren’t racist anymore?
Are you kidding? That just shows that they’re the most racist of all!
But my 6th grade math/science teacher held up a photograph of Bush’s cabinet (ostensibly) to the class and said “notice how there aren’t any women here?”
I assume the backpack is full of bitcons?
no, mexicans.

I am worried this might hurt sales of my memoir; Find a hole and go: The Gilmore Story
his month Paul Ryan and members of the Trump cabinet took meetings with an interest group trying to cut a deal for a special subset of America’s 11 million undocumented residents. They’re no SuperPAC, but what they lack in spending power they make up for in charming brogues—it’s the Irish!
I was under the impression that in this white supremacist culture, we don’t care about illegal immigration of wypipo. Why would they need to make a deal with Trump if there is no chance of them being deported for disobeying our laws?
Anyone else see this article from last week arguing how Ta-Nehisi view of omnipotent white power lines up with Richard Spencer’s view of same?
FAT: “I have spent the past six months poring over the literature of European and American white nationalism, in the process interviewing noxious identitarians like the alt-right founder Richard Spencer. The most shocking aspect of Mr. Coates’s wording here is the extent to which it mirrors ideas of race — specifically the specialness of whiteness — that white supremacist thinkers cherish.”
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/06/opinion/ta-nehisi-coates-whiteness-power.html?smid=tw-share&_r=1
FAT = FTA. (freakin’ autocorrect….)
In the crazy upside down world of victimhood is power, Coates’ viewpoint is correct.
Can we get this up on a billboard somewhere?
Being a weirdo that for whatever reason has occasionally found himself among some of the more obscure segments of society over the years, I’ve met a number of people that were what would be considered “ultra-left”, or straight up communist. You’d be amazed by how much crossover there is between them and hardcore neo-Nazi types. It puts major sports leagues’ draft seasons to shame.
The horseshoe theory is real.
I think it was mentioned in Shirer’s Rise and Fall of the Third Reich how Nazis and Commies proles would often go back and forth. Neither tried to recruit from classical liberal or moderate parties.
Hardcore racists are all the same. Same thinking, same language, same premises, same arguments. They are the same across all races, which is more evidence that skin color means two things: 1) Jack, and 2.) Shit
I would bet that if Coates and Spencer actually had a conversation about anything other than race, they would find that they agreed on most things (since Spencer is pretty hard-left)
And then they would fuck.
I don’t think either of them is into miscegenation, so it’s….oooh…that only makes it *hotter*, doesn’t it?
Yes, it does

From the department of unintentionally revealing
In the early 1970s, the newly formed US Drug Enforcement Administration was focused on heroin, and its agents spent little time on cocaine.
“We really were not pursuing it like we should have,” Mike Vigil, who joined the agency a few months after it was created in mid-1973, told Business Insider, in part because it “didn’t have the social impact” that heroin did.
Cocaine was often seen as “kiddie dope” and not significant enough to go after, said Vigil, who would eventually serve as chief of international operations for the DEA before he retired.
A drug-abuse task force set up by President Gerald Ford in late 1975 said cocaine was not a problem, as it was “not physically addictive … and usually does not result in serious social consequences, such as crime, hospital emergency room admissions, or both”
http://www.businessinsider.com/us-cocaine-bust-against-cali-cartel-in-a-queens-new-york-city-bathtub-2017-10
In the early 80’s, there were a bunch of pro-cocaine articles in mainstream publications such as the NYT.
Hillary and Julian Assange are going to war. I’ll put my money on Assange unless the Clinton hit-man has access to the Embassy of Ecuador in London. Maybe Trump will pardon him, although he’s Seth Rich walking as soon as he leaves
Assange has to have something damning on Clinton because she hates him with a red hot fury. She obviously wants to bury his credibility before he lets loose with whatever it is he has.
Trump pardoning him would be fucking awesome.
With raw material like that imagine the lies Hillary and the DNC could spin. With not even a tenth of that, Hillary is able to spew stupid lie after stupid lie.
My favorite is how Hillary says the release of their internal emails was “weaponized”. No one has ever denied the veracity of those emails, but somehow the fact that the DNC was fixing the primaries and doing all sorts of sleazy things shouldn’t be held against them.

Investigator into Panama Papers Killed by Car Bomb
noted: the main people exposed in the investigation weren’t “criminals”: they were public officials, NGO workers, FIFA and F1 executives, entertainers.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_named_in_the_Panama_Papers#Heads_of_state
Most of the private citizens who held these offshore accounts did so legally. (they might have used some for tax evasion, but there haven’t been any major headline stories about it)
the real crime hidden by this investigation was the way “public servants” used their authority as a pipeline for graft.
Also: has anyone seen lots of follow-up reporting on this story from the NYT/WaPo, CNN, et al? Me neither. The “Public Interest Test” for Journalism, the entire reason we’re supposed to care about the importance of a free press, is to expose Government corruption. Strangely they mostly seem entirely disinterested.

I know the Republican party has earned being “The Stupid Party” time and time again, but if they actually pass a bill to solidify Obamacare when they campaigned on repeal… I think this will be a new height of stupidity.

Its amazing how they turned that guy into Darth Sidious.
GOPe and Red State Dems really want that grand compromise to use for 2018 campaign purposes and save their little racket going on. It won’t work, just like how that little bump stock ban is going to die. Conservatives are finally standing up to the GOPe, and it’ll show in the primaries.
The House isn’t mentioned at all. Wouldn’t they need to approve the bill also?
If it ain’t a treaty or a judge, the House must approve.
Just started reading the Star Wars short story collection “From a Certain Point of View”, that retells “A New Hope” from the point of view of background characters. The story of the Imperial gunner covering up him not shooting the escape pod at the beginning by using massive amounts of bureaucratic paperwork had me hysterical.
OK, something is wrong with me.
I assumed that this Neil Macdonald article on viewing the world through Trump supporter eyes would be his usual derp. Except, I can’t find much fault with his presentation of Deplorable Viewpoint.
Did he outsource the column to his brother?!
He… he needs to get out of my head.
Same here. He’s a narcissistic bastard, but that hardly distinguishes him from the rest of the mooing herd in DC. He at least is attacking the vast self-regard and bulletproof sense of entitlement that our Ruling Class has, and that is a Very Good Thing. Our Ruling Class sucks donkey balls, and they badly need a major attitude adjustment (well, they really need to get real jobs, but pending that, an attitude adjustment is the best we can do).
Watching the perfumed princes of the beltway and their multitudinous enablers and useful idiots squirm and squeal is its own reward.
I’m gonna say thats actually pretty spot on.
Is his brother Norm? Because I read it in Norm MacDonald’s weekend update sarcastic voice.
Yup, and I’ll gladly once again link Neil’s article on growing up with Norm, because it’s really good stuff.
That’s pretty good.
Holy shit, this could be awesome: Capitalism: A Debate Between Reason and Jacobin, 11/3, NYC
Gillespie is a poor debater, but I have hopes for KMW. Go get them, tiger!
I hope they wear name tags so we can tell the sides apart during the debate.
Reason has plenty of problems, but they are a far cry from jacobin.
Hah! That made me laugh.
Vivek Chibber and Bhaskar Sunkara (for Jacobin)
Yeah, socialism worked out real well in India…
I was going to say…
“Is capitalism the best way to improve standards of living, ensure political and economic freedom, and provide opportunity? Could socialism do better?”
Why is this a question? I know, because there are retards among us.
“Is capitalism the best way to improve standards of living, ensure political and economic freedom, and provide opportunity? Could socialism do better?”
“Let’s look at some satellite photos, shall we? *puts up North v South Korea* *puts up Cuba*
A couple of longitudinal case studies *compares, again, North v South Korea GDP over the last fifty years* *compares Cuba v Carribean GDP over the last fifty years*
I would say “Yes, capitalism is better”. I think we’re done here. First round at the hotel bar is on the Jacobins, on account of “To each according to their needs”, and I need a drink, and “From each according to their means”, and I’m sure our socialist friends aren’t about to cry poverty when they came here to argue the economic superiority of socialism.”
Chile vs Venezuela since 2000
Replace The Jacket with Kmele. When the Jacobins gibber, accuse them of misogny and racism.
Make Michelle Goldberg squirm.
Nerd alert….just bought a 4th full short box of indie comics. I can’t get over this local deal. Still boxes and boxes I haven’t looked through. Probably going back on Saturday….maybe 1 or 2 more boxes then. Honestly…I may just toss out a stack of these after I’ve flipped through them for but the price – I can’t not check out some of these titles. Good grief. https://twitter.com/AtlasComics/status/919613056589680640
If you can find more of Miller’s Man Without Fear, get it! It’s Batman: Year One (but for Daredevil, obviously) 5-issue series he did 15 years ago and is top-notch. He really should have had co-creator credit on the Netflix show…
It’s definitely on the list, but I don’t think some of those really stay in the sub dollar bin very long. Today was 100% old indie stuff too.
Isn’t that one of the anti-SJW comic YouTubers’ favorite stores?
I haven’t read comics (other than my own ‘comics’) for almost 30 years, so I have no real dog in the fight. Still, I found the parallels to GamerGate interesting re: SJW Marvel. Their vids on the tanking sales are hilarious (or would be, but for all the fans and stores Marvel is screwing).
Also – the last ones I read in my late teens were ones like Furry Freak Bros & Weirdo – edited by a (pre-libertarian) Peter Bagge. When I found Reason 15 years later
I don’t think so. I’ve been trying to get Diversity & Comics to come by next time he drives through, but the one he visited the day of the Riot was Telegraph Art and Prints downtown.
Crap. “When I found Reason 15 years later, it was kind of surreal to see his stuff.”
Well done Baked Penguin.

Stanley Bernard Banks Jr., 30, of Petersburg, was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and allowing a juvenile to access a firearm.
I had no idea it was crime to allow a juvenile a cess to a firearm. My entire family and most people I know are guilty as hell.
Not sure if been posted … I work. Anyway, I’m seeing VA having a R governor coming up here. I interpret this poll as Gillespie + 4.5. All he really needs now is for Obama and maybe Hillary to stop by and show their support for the D. That should be good for +10 pt lead for the R. Maybe +15 if Hill shows.
Virginia Gov Race
Northam comes off as smarmy and obnoxious. His ads are extremely annoying, too. If I gave a shit, I’d vote against him simply because he annoys me.
Too late, Obama is showing up on Thursday. I still have this race as Tilt Northam, but I have a prog tear jar that I saved from Jon Ossoff that I will bring to NoVA if an upset happens.
Wouldn’t be an upset, the R is already ahead in the polls today. Obama would seal the deal.
That and another Antifa rally. Don’t disappoint me, Antifa, I have underdog PredictIt bets begging for you guys to come!

It’s kinda long, so here’s the summary.
My state voted for medical marijuana this year. The state government set up a very restrictive licensing scheme. The state government is now having trouble handling all the applications that it mandated. Therefore timetables keep getting pushed back for when the medical marijuana program can get started.
Basically, beurocracy effectively stifling new business.
CNN on at airport. It’s all opinion and no news. It’s hilariously bad.
Well, it’s CNN.
CNN has reached unintentional Onion status.
Umm, ok. This is not weird at all.
LV Security Guard Disappears
WTF is going on here? Timelines all fucked up and here’s maybe the only guy in existence who is a real time witness for those events and he fucking disappears and hasn’t been seen for days? Do we even have a functional FBI these days or is the full time job of all of them writing fake stories about Russians and investigating Weinstein’s suppose rapey affairs? This is all sorts of fucked up.
Am I wrong here?
Not wrong at all. This shit tops all other conspiracies by a country mile.
I mean just put it all together. No clues at all found about a motive. No one knows anything about guys history. GF is mysteriously out of the country. Guy is holed up in a hotel room for days, no one sees him, but no questions from anyone about why. Timelines all fucked up. The guy has a massive arsenal in his room. How many guns does he need to to shoot up a concert? Ammo yeah, why all of the guns? Then the only witness to the true timeline of the event fucking disappears minutes before talking to the media and no one can find him. Who was the lady running around before the shooting saying everyone would die? FBI not looking for her? Not looking for the security guard? This is just screaming all sorts of fucked up.
Is there an ‘official’ version of the story that has been released?
Various LEO have made public statements about what happened, but they keep changing.
Not really. They keep changing it. I’m about as far from a conspiracy theory person as you can get. In fact, I love making fun of those people as much as I do progs. But this is all fucked up, there is no way it’s not fucked up.
I don’t think I believe in any other proposed motive or timeline, at least the conspiracy ones. I do think it’s all unknown.
Is there an ‘official’ version of the story that has been released?
Oh, yeah:
“Some dude killed a bunch of people with guns. We need moar gun control.”
Also, unlike your typical “crazy person shoots up ‘gun-free’ zone” mass shootings, it wasn’t face to face, so no one actually saw the alleged shooter shooting.
It’s reached the point where the facts sound more absurd than the conspiracies.
Do we even have a functional FBI these days
You mean, the FBI that let his girlfriend walk after a brief chat at the airport? The same FBI that just completely lost, for weeks, the wife/girlfriend of another terror suspect (clanking on which one)? The same FBI that let most of the House Pakistani IT people leave the country?
That FBI?
That wouldn’t be the same FBI that’s still “investigating” how the Russians elected Trump, would it?

not judging or anything, but in my very limited experience (which is twice), it was always 2 chicks + moi, and it was their idea in both cases.

true story: after the first one, my mom called me the morning after, and i told her what had gone down. (*not in detail! just the “hey, guess what ma! i had a three way” part)
because the 2 girls had been students in her 7th grade english class. she went, “…. ” ….. then “you know, i always knew X was sort of trampy”
I defended their honor. “Mom, its not like they were just shacking up with *anyone*. It was ME.” I could hear her shaking her head.

The guy looks like Yoda. I’ve seen smaller bags checked at the airport than he has under his eyes.
Hasn’t he done enough to destroy the world?
He’s still trying to top ‘Well, I turned them Jews over to the Nazis and helped them be relieved of their property and hauled off to the camps, because someone else was going to do it anyway’.
Well, he may yet get there with the whole “funding racial strife in America” thing.
He’s aiming high with “bring down Western Civilization”; since the Nazis failed, if at first you don’t succeed…
I find it amusing how they try to use first world problems as one of their techniques. I’ve pointed out to progs, as recently as this month, how oppressed people don’t have time to worry about about this type of issue. You don’t worry too much about whether someone refers to you as the wrong pro-noun when you have to worry about food on the table for your family or a murderous regime hauling you and your entire clan off to the death camps.

This should be entertaining.
North Korea Is Not a Socialist Society
http://revcom.us/a/301/north-korea-is-not-a-socialist-society-en.html
***
North Korea is not socialist. Socialism is a new form of political power in which the formerly oppressed and exploited, in alliance with the middle classes and professionals and the great majority of society, rule over society with the leadership of a visionary, vanguard party. And socialism is a new economic system where the resources and productive capacities of society are consciously organized and planned to meet social need, and to overcome the inequalities of capitalist class society.
…
North Korea is a militarized, paternalistic society ruled by a narrow stratum of bureaucratic state capitalists. It is a stagnant and stifling society that operates according to a coercive social contract: the masses will be taken care of if they work harder and harder for the survival and benefit of the nation. The masses are kept passive and suppressed in this neo-capitalist welfare state. There is nothing revolutionary… nothing uplifting… nothing radically transformative about North Korea.
…
Bob Avakian has brought forward a new synthesis that sums up the positive and negative experience of the communist revolution so far, and drawing from a broad range of human experience, he has brought forward a viable vision and strategy for a radically new, and much better, society and world.
***
I never thought I would see North Korea described as neo-capitalist.
Avakian got his start in SDS, but left to form his own group. His latest project is an anti-Trump movement called Refuse Fascism.
“North Korea is not socialist. Socialism is a new form of political power in which the formerly oppressed and exploited, in alliance with the middle classes and professionals and the great majority of society, rule over society with the leadership of a visionary, vanguard party. lol, I kind of appreciate the brazenness of the disingenuousness.
Change the meaning of words faster than you can use them to counter the erstwhile-underlying-idea. Ha ha!—You thought you made a good point, do ya? Well, as of 5 seconds before you started to respond, we’re not even talking about the same thing.
Wham.
Magic.
“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.”
“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.”
“The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master – – that’s all.”
Well, I’m convinced. I’m no longer opposed to socialism, just to neo-capitalism and to the ideology and policies hypocritically or foolishly called “socialism” that would eventually become neo-capitalism. You know, socialism.
Oh, that’s the group that crazy berkely broad (*who is not Yvette Felacca) represents.
Here’s her making shouting over the UC Berkeley president and ruining their carefully stage managed, thoughtful PR event.
basically, ‘crazy progs refuse to allow ‘professional progs’ to control the narrative’. which frankly i appreciate. Because the bourgeois progs always try sugarcoating their bullshit, while the SJW nutjobs don’t even try.
Even a story dumbed down to the level of a child is probably still too sophisticated for your average prog.

The narrator is a human/Grey hybrid.
He definitely needs to find a better human disguise guy, the one he’s using is doing a shitty job.
Hilariously, it looks like it got demonetized despite the preamble.
I think the ending is a little too “fairy tale-ish”. What really happens is Charlotte goes to school with no cookies, and Tommy hits her over the head with a bike lock and calls her a Nazi.
Or he gets the Principal to force her to bake cookies.
Then Charlotte becomes an internet fetish model, uses the bitcoin to build an AR-15, and shoots up the school.
However, she shot the school resource officer 6 minutes before shooting up the school, and now the resource officer is nowhere to be found, and nobody can figure out why she had 25 guns with her and why, despite her successful cookie business, she decided to shoot up the school.
What you did there… I see it.
Women = victims. No matter what. They are just pawns for the ultra-powerful men around them. Victorian-era mores were never this misogynistic.

Gilligan.

Gillibrand is basic AF, so no. Gabbard’s my girl.

Yo John Titor! – just found out about this and confirmed it – will probably order this weekend.
UK Region B Blu-Ray has the full series of original Berserk for 30 pounds! (on amazon uk). NOTE: Only for Region Free folks – default US/Canadian Blu-Ray players will NOT play.
I don’t know what that is but I will say that buying an all-region DVD player was the smartest fucking move I ever made.
DVD Regions are literally genocide.
To be sure.
DVD Regions are the white people of regions. (did I do that right?)
I know – unfortunately with Blu-Ray it’s even more expensive/complicated – even though there’s only 3 regions. (vs 8 on DVD).
Didn’t look for UK DVDs of Berserk – I’ll go for the Blu-Ray myself.
I will definitely plug these guys though: http://www.220-electronics.com/region-free-blu-ray-players.html
Bought my player from them.
Oh, I didn’t even notice you were talking about Blu-Ray. I haven’t considered going the Blu-Ray route yet. One of these days.
It really does make a difference on an HD TV – of course…I didn’t notice till I got a new TV (my first “HD” tv was apparently only 720i – bought in Dec 2006). Didn’t start watching most of my flicks on real HD screen till my last place in 2014. Resolution is just amazing. So much detail.
Oh yeah, I definitely notice the picture isn’t all it could be with DVDs – I just don’t care. I’m not that picky about it.
I think i’ve mentioned this elsewhere (TOS) before…
…but, in one of my periodic fits of techno-hobbyishness… around 2003-2007 i think… i had a process by which i’d take my 3-5 DVD per-week Netflix ration, and run them through a 2nd PC i had lying around, which i’d equipped with CloneDVD and a pair of Plextor DVD writers…. basically copying, and boxing and autolabeling around 200 DVDs a year for 3-4 years.
I ran out of shelf space around 2007… and also realized that torrenting was going to make my stupid process obsolete. there was no point re-burning digital files to a new medium: it was just cheaper to buy more hard-disk storage and keep just the ‘raw movie’ rather than the multilayered DVD data.
but the net result was i have about 600 DVDs in boxes, and more in disk-folders and on hard-disks which never got burned. Its an interesting library. I did it methodically, but in clusters. Every “best picture” academy award winners, every movie by every great director, custom box sets of “best [insert random genre] films”, etc. There were a lot of vintage Tv series i wanted, like the World At War BBC docos, “Connections” w/ James Burke, lots of comedy shows, etc.
The sad thing is that 90% of this shit is in storage, because i moved, and didn’t want to eat up whole rooms of my crib with this gigantic disc repository. instead i just got a couple of external hard disks and have a small reference of some of my favorite stuff.
but its all still in DVD format (720?). which i never would have thought was ‘less resolution than i needed’, until i got an HD tv. I’m still sort of on the fence about the value of “blue ray versions” of older movies. They were made to be in lower-resolution. I don’t really care for trying to ‘improve’ the older stuff. but i can totally see the value in higher-resolution new production stuff.
U.S. DVD’s are 480. (720 X 480). If something was shot on film, even if it is old, the Blu-Ray will be better because the resolution of analogue is infinite.
Anyway, I can sympathize. I have boxes of floppy disks, VHS, cassette tapes, DAT, CD, and yards of vinyl records.
I have some DVD’s I bought or burned. But not many.
yes, i realized this after typing the above, and smdh at myself.
my point was really more a sort of plea to the idea that “fuck, its the way they pushed it at the time”… and at that time there was no HD television capable of more.
so, it is what it is. the purpose in most cases wasnt trying to have the 100% best presentation of the film as possible, but rather just a ‘reference library’ so that i could catalog all the things i thought were interesting.
I have never been a collector-for-collecting’s sake before, but it was my one, brief, obsessive foray into it.
**i also realize i’ve confessed to having 1000s of vinyl records from years of collecting, but *that doesn’t count!* it was functional.
As I’ve noted before, the few times I’ve torrented flicks is for ones that I couldn’t buy with subs (or that weren’t getting releases in the short term).
Blu-Ray is also very nice because some studios (ie. WB, Kino, etc) have been remastering ancient flicks – even silents from the original films and they look absolutely stunning – far better than the old VHS, DVDs and even the 35mm. Some are absolutely incredible. Got the Kino box of Buster Keaton, now I think I need to upgrade my Marx Bros and Harold Lloyd – and build an actual Chaplin collection.
Also, slowly building my Fritz Lang collection – and some older French flicks too – so much great stuff finally getting released.
