No lynxs, but comics. I’ll allow it.
There’s another lynx thread.
Just to show I’m not all derp, some good news.
http://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/22/dnc-2018-rebuilding-finances-244019
That was under whelming. WHY is this happening? Is it because of ideology? That the DNC pulled too far left? Why are they rotting? They just close with one guy saying he isn’t ‘motivated’
“and the fallout from the Russian hack of the committee computer system.”
They still pushing that?
That “unmotivated” guy is an ambulance chaser here in Orlando. If he does run for governor, I’m going to vote R. If they run Satan himself, I’m voting R in that race.
Also, it’s funny that this is from Las Vegas. They flew out a bunch of party bigwigs to Las Vegas – I’m guessing not coach – and they wonder why they’re running low on cash. “We have no fiscal responsibility, we screwed over half of our base last election, and now no one wants to give us moneys. Whycome?
The one party state opposition leadership doesn’t get it, but they will….
http://www.politico.com/story/2017/10/22/trump-california-gop-republican-party-244027
So. Are we witnessing a ‘revolution’ in the GOP ranks?
This stood out for me:
“…Madrid said, “This is not conservatism … It’s an abhorrent devolution” of the party’s base.”
RINOism is not conservatism. They’ve convinced themselves their conservatives.
“…That doesn’t make it right. It means there’s something wrong with our base. And leadership requires leading us out of this dysfunction … ”
Those damn deplorables!
That’s what makes the Right’s split different from the Left’s. With the Right, it’s the base voters uniting against the ruling class and using Trump as their advertising vehicle. With the Left, it’s young Bernie fans/radical left bickering and infighting the older Clinton center-left and union voters, mixed with intersectional identity politics for extra toxicity.
Forget it man, it’s California.
This explains so much about Odie…
That is just disgusting. Wasting dog cum like that SMDH.
What did I just see? Slowly backs out of the thread
Hold the door. I’m right behind you.
*hammers on locked door*
TAKE ME WITH YOU!
There’s always room for you Swiss. Just throw a phosphorus grenade at that thing before you leave.
Family Friendly, now with cartoons,
Congrats to Sloopys Astros, was a heartbreaker last night, but i hope the Stros win it all.
Loved hearing Altuve speak at the press conferences during series, guys a class act as well as a great clutch player.
Why is this a thing so soon after the links? Which thread should one comment on?
The picture on the main page has little to do with the content call shenanigans. I also call click-bait
I missed an I in there
And a period.
Congratulations!
Not mine. I had that taken care of.
“Which thread should one comment on?”
The only live thread is the most recent.
Wife has been watching Arrow. It is stupid.
That show sucks. It’s Days of Our Lives meets crappy superhero no one’s ever heard of.
Yeap. Plus evil korprashuns
There are a bunch of shows in that category. They are sort of in my demographic so I watch them hoping they will eventually stop sucking. And then when they don’t I feel stupid for having watched it. I never did Arrow, but I will admit to trying to watch The Flash. It pretty much sucks.
WB is great for that sort of thing. They had a couple of good guilty pleasure superhero / fantasy shows and a metric crap-ton of ones that are not worth watching. But they followed the formula. Have a superhero or fantasy theme and hire a bunch of young and very attractive actors. Ever since Joss Whedon laid the groundwork with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, that has been their bread and butter.
And I never admit to watching any of those shows in public. Only around you guys
It’s late, and it’s been a day of bar crawling, so I’ll admit to watching all of the WB superhero shows here. At the present, I’d say that Legends of Tomorrow is the best of the bunch because they admit to the ridiculousness, and run with it. After that, Arrow has been consistent in it’s dark morality, Supernatural is at this point a soap opera for males, the Flash gave up it’s fun, and Riverdale is Twin Peaks with high school students.
I have seen the original cartoon and even taken in context, I think he really is drinking dog semen.
No one can build on ground that isn’t frozen.

ok, yelling my name isn’t going to help.

“Vladimir Romanovsky walks through the dense black spruce forest with ease.”
More Russian influencing and colluding. It just keeps getting worse.
Revanchists trying to get Alaska returned to Mother Russia.
That’s IT!
My favorite is that we’re spending $1million per person to evacuate them… government saves the day again.
My wife just came back from a week long sewing class in Washington. One morning while she was there, a Canadian (not part of the class) in the dining room of the hotel decided to lecture her about Trump and then healthcare. What kind of disrespectful morons go to another country and tries to insult the residents? Of course the Canadian brought up higher newborn mortality as the gotcha of our broken healthcare.
State or DC? Could have happened in either place of course.
State.
Seattleites will harp that stuff without any help from Canadians. People East of the Cascades are on average less nuts than those on the West side.
Please tell me this devolved into a catfight.
I always like to bring up the fact that the US has the highest cancer survival rates in the world. That’s the nice thing about being able to get services when you need them without being placed on a six-month waiting list.
I’ve got to give the Canuck credit, though – usually they just bring up life expectancy, which is of course influenced by a whole host of other factors like genetics, diet, societal views on obesity, etc.
“higher newborn mortality”
Yeah, that has nothing to do with demographics. Did she lecture her on immigration policy as well?
I’m.pretty sure women are born knowing how sew, so that’s fishy right there. She probably was in Vegas
What happens in sewing class, stays in sewing class.
Maximum derp.
I’ll just posted what I did earlier when I heard NPR harping on this BS statistic:
I’ve been seeing a lot of scaremongering on NPR (National Propaganda Radio) and then later facebook about the US maternal death rates being 2-3x higher than in the UK. I listened to the video linked below and realized it was all an attempt to mislead people. The US and UK report the data in different ways. US maternal deaths are reported for the full year day 0-365 from end of pregnancy, while the UK deaths were reported from day 0-42. Luckily they also had a category of deaths called ‘late maternal deaths’ which report deaths from day 43-365, shockingly, by adding those 2 numbers up, we find that UK maternal deaths are actually *higher* than US ones.
https://youtu.be/Rluh1gQ4GpM?t=4m10s
And I totes misread that… newborn not maternal deaths *whoops*
Not sure why anyone would care, it’s just a late term abortion. They’re not human until they can vote democrat.
Yeah, but the same BS in comparing different countries’ statistics. My wife is a good soul and just left, then fumed to me. Anyone from a country with PM Zoolander or people leaving to get ordinary procedures in a reasonable amount of time doesn’t have any room to lecture anyone else, imo. But as I said to my wife, at least here she’s in a (somewhat) free country at the moment and can speak her mind without having to get a permission slip from a bureaucrat first or deliver the rant in French as well as English.
Yeah but the real question is, has your wife been studying from the master Donald Trump? Because all of this side talk about politics has you distracted from the most Salient point, which is that she was at a sewing class.
Sewing class? For a week?
The “progressive” devotion to “free” healthcare has become a religion.
Someone was telling me about how everyone in Europe always gets world-class treatment for free, and I mentioned that people over there often die on waiting lists. His reply was, “Well… At least they’re ON a list!“
Oh, I know what list to put him on.
*adds your acquaintance to helicopter manifest*
You know who else killed a bunch of people on a list?
the Terminator?
Lord High Executioner?
Sulla?
Barack “Murderdrone” Obama?
That was a matrix , you ignorant ‘bagger.
You know who else had a matrix?
Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi?
In 2015, Canada had an IM of close to 5 per 1000, the US had an IM of around 6 per 1000. (the sources are inconsistent). It’s not exactly like we’re in Central African Republic or Somalia territory.

Crap. I replied to this with a bunch of links that I thought would just appear as text. As soon as a mod comes by, you’ll see it.
Anyway, I call BS.
Our IM is much lower. We just count differently. And by differently, I mean honestly.
I’ve heard this claim before, do you have a source so I can beta people over the head with it?
If they’re beta people, they’ll probably be receptive to the claim.
We have a higher rate of pre-term births:

What kind of disrespectful morons go to another country and tries to insult the residents?
That is fair game if you are an American regardless of where you are. Americans are the white people of the global population. Your wife should have just told her to get the fuck out of her country if she thought it was so awful. Fuck assholes like that.
Our infant mortality is high because we count premies.
Canada and Europe do not.
It’s a failure of their system, actually.
And did your wife ask how long the wait is for an MRI in Canada?
Hollywood has a sad,
http://www.showbiz411.com/2017/10/21/hollywood-ending-big-studios-cutting-losses-this-weekend-pulling-flops-from-theaters-earlier-than-usual
I know there are a lot of moving parts to making a movie, but I really don’t believe it’s that god damn hard to make a reasonably budged movie that will do well. Hollywood is probably the most broken successful industry in the country. It’s a business model that is built around nepotism and perversion. I mean the latter statement to mean you have a bunch of overpaid hacks who make most if not all of their decisions based on where they want to stick their dick at a given moment. Then you tack on their aversion to changing with technology…
We’re going to need more explosions.
I sometimes wonder if they just forgot how to make a good movie,
I’ve never been much of a movie theater person, but at $18 a head for a movie, candy, and a drink, I’m completely avoiding anything coming out of Hollywood these days. Most of is it utter dreck, anyway.
I have a projector screen and surround sound speakers in the basement. I get 10x the entertainment at 1/10 the price by buying soda and candy at the grocery store and watching some old movie on Netflix.
The popcorn sucks, the candy sucks, the sticky floor sucks, the cloth seats with herpes suck, and the people suck. I haven’t seen a movie in the theater in years. The only exception being when I’m on vacation and take the kids to an animated movie.
I have a projector in the office and a 4k curved screen in the living room. Both are preferable to the movie theater.
I dimmed the lights and put on the “Planet Earth 2” with the snakes a few months ago. Full surround sound, both subwoofers turned all the way up. Now THAT was a good time. Kids screaming and popcorn flying everywhere.
Wait, where are you going to the movies that you can get a ticket, popcorn, drink and candy for 18 bucks?
Face value tickets around here are 11 or 12 bucks. A drink is five bucks. And a large popcorn is six bucks. And candy is like three or four bucks.
On the rare occasions we go to the theater, we go on Tuesdays when the tickets are five bucks.
Excepting this and a couple visits to Alamo Drafthouse (and similar full-service theaters), I haven’t been to a movie theater since 2012 or so. I vaguely recall paying around $9 for the ticket, $4 for candy, and $3 for a drink. Add a couple bucks for inflation, and that’s $18.
I try to limit myself to 2 liters of cola in one sitting.
We go to a dinnerbeermovie place, with recliners. The problem is finding movies we want to see.
The best place to get candy is the dollar store. That and reading glasses. Hell, the best place to get anything they sell is the dollar store.
Repost from last night.
Monocle 2.00 is available.
New Features:
-New show threads mode that includes more context around new comments
-New algorithm for dynamic comment loading every 45 seconds (it may be disabled by default. Go to Options — Dynamically Load Comments to enable)
-Optional Compacted Comments (removes some vertical whitespace)
-Go to reply box button
-Faster execution
Additional Info:
-The dynamic comment loading is a little bit goofy in the sense that it just randomly shoots you up the page when new comments are added. I need to figure out how best to fix that.
-When you click the reply button for a comment, dynamic comment loading turns off. Clicking cancel reply turns it back on.
Just FYI, now if I click on the “blockquote” button without any text selected or typed in the reply box first, it will go to an error page.
Using Firefox with latest monocle, afaik.
Oh that is really weird. TBH, I’m not sure why that’s happening now… I didn’t change that code at all. I’ll take a look and try to fix it.
Thanks!
Figured I’d see if any other buttons do it, got it to glitch out with “strikethrough” as well. The others worked as one would expect.
No problem.
how do I install this?
This should tell you everything you need. The current version has a few known issues, but is mostly working fine.
thanks
Or, you could check the FAQs.
Can you add a “Kill Winston” button?
ZING!
Is that you Big Brother?
Heat wave.
Mimosas and then pool. That should take up the next 8 hours or so.
OH fuck.
So selfless they are the highest paid person. *facepalms through own head*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0cJjoel9N8
Just looked up the figures for Great Britain. Highest paid public employees mostly work for the Cabinet Office, Crown Prosecution, Ministry of Defense or the Scottish government. Hm, yes, ‘selfless’.
My god, the smugness levels are off the fucking charts.
Why is this being portrayed as some kind of defect with the American people? This hipster douchenozzle just stated at the beginning of this very same video that America is the world’s biggest cultural, military, and financial superpower at this point in history, so why is it some kind of aberration for people to be proud of living in that country? Don’t you think the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Ottomans, and British experienced a spike in patriotism when their respective countries seemed to be the most powerful country in the world?
Also, I like how he claimed that America has a “flag in every yard” and showed a picture of a suburban street with flags every few feet. This is obviously a special display for a patriotic holiday like Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day, or July 4th.
I know I hit the Lottery being Born here, I’m never going to be rich, but I’m happy.
America! Fuck Yea!
“”Go to any other country in the Western world […] and the highest paid public employee will be someone working in a selfless capacity.””
ahem

See, they are the highest paid!

Bills manage not to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?
Both teams fought really hard not to win.
Damn. Poor Cleveland. They actually went to OT vs the Titans, only to lose by a FG.
Damn your nimble fingers!
Even better, the Titans kicker had made fifty plus straight kicks under fifty yards. Browns call timeout right before he misses at fourty seven. Re kicks for the win. Priceless.
😀
I wasn’t able to watch it, but that is hilarious. I think they learned that play from the Bills.
when he missed that first one, I knew they’d win.
fucking iced the wrong time.
I have to wonder, how do you keep any morale in a situation like that? I’d have a hard time showing up, mentally.
Look at my game check, consider alternatives….play like Hell unleashed every week.
I always wonder if the kickers half ass it in those situations, this time especially, the Browns called TO with plenty of time the kicker probably could have not kicked at all, It seems to happen a lot and I think the kicker just use it as a practice swing kind of thing. Also I’m torn, on the one hand I really wanted the Browns to win, but on the other I don’t have to apologize to F. Stupidity Jr. for making fun of him picking the Browns to win.
I wanted a tie.
In fairness, the time stoppage was due to the 2-minute warning, not a timeout by Cleveland.
Ah, fair point. I guess it wasn’t so much a self-inflicted loss as it was continuing proof that the football gods hate Cleveland.
What a wonderfully Browns way to lose a football game.
two whole minutes of highlights. wait, not even that.
Niger: Islamic jihadis storm military base, murder 12 paramilitary police
https://www.jihadwatch.org/2017/10/niger-islamic-jihadis-storm-military-base-murder-12-paramilitary-police
***
At least 12 paramilitary police in Niger have been killed in an attack by gunmen using pick-up trucks and motorcycles on their base in the western town of Ayorou, officials say.
Soldiers pursued the attackers, and reportedly clashed with them near the border with Mali.
Several jihadist groups and other armed forces operate in the area.
The attack was close to where militants killed four US soldiers in an ambush earlier this month….
Militants in the area include Boko Haram fighters from Nigeria and radicals linked to al-Qaeda and so-called Islamic State, who are mostly thought to be based either in neighbouring Mali or the similarly unstable Libya to the north.
Security sources say that militants in the latest attack were heavily armed with rocket launchers and machine guns. They carried out the assault using four vehicles, each carrying about seven fighters.
The identity of the attackers is not yet clear. Officials say they launched their attack on Ayorou – about 40km (25 miles) inside Niger – from Mali.
Military vehicles are reported to have been seized by the gunmen, at least one of whom was reported to have been killed in the exchange of fire….

Here comes trouble…

Iran is, with Turkey, the nation that would be most harmed by the creation of an independent Kurdish state in Iraq. With an independent Kurdistan, and a well-armed Peshmerga, just over the border, the seven to eight million Kurds living in western Iran might well be inspired to rise up against their Persian masters in order to join that Kurdish state
…
An independent Kurdistan carved out of northern Iraq will have two effects on Iran’s stability. The first, and most obvious, is the effect such a Kurdish state would have on the eight million Kurds in Iran. They have been exhilarated by the referendum in Iraq; public demonstrations of solidarity have unnerved the rulers in Tehran, who have dispatched troops to Kurdish cities. This has always been one of Tehran’s worst fears: the possible violent uprising by masses of Kurds. They tried it in 1979, and were ferociously crushed, with at least 30,000 Kurds killed.
…
For Iran, an open revolt by its Kurds presents an even worse possibility than the loss of Kurdish-populated territories. Such a revolt could threaten the very existence of the country. The various non-Persian minorities in Iran make up between 35% and 50% of the population (the government claims the lower figure; outsiders claim the latter). Many of them resent their treatment at the hands of the Persians. The Azeris are the largest ethnic minority in Iran, 18 million of them, or approximately 20% of the population. In fact, there are more Azeris in Iran than in Azerbaijan itself, which has 9 million. They have not been well treated. The Iranian government has banned the teaching of the Azeri language and literature in Iranian schools. When in 2015 the Iranians broadcast programs that mocked the Azeri accent and language, this alone led Azeris, already on the edge, to demonstrate in many cities, shouting such slogans as “stop racism against Azeri Turks,” “long live Azerbaijan,” and “end the Persian racism,” in Tabriz, Urmia, Ardabil, and Zanjan, and even Tehran itself. Civil unrest among the Azeris is a given. And independent Azerbaijan is just over the border.
…
The final minority that has been mistreated by the Persians are the Arabs in Khuzestan, the oil-producing southern province that was devastated in the Iran-Iraq war, with much of the area left in ruins. The Iranians claim there are two million of them; the Arabs claim there are five million in Khuzestan. Whatever their number, the Khuzestanian Arabs have long complained of discrimination by the Persians. In 2005, there were mass riots and mass arrests of 25,000 people, and many Arabs were summarily executed. Arrests, torture, and executions have continued to imperfectly keep the peace. There were more riots in 2007, followed by more repression; in 2015, there were a wave of arrests made so as to head off any tenth-anniversary revolt; the rage remains. But if those Arabs were supplied directly with arms, or with the money to buy arms, they could cause a great deal of destruction to the oilfields and thus to the Iranian economy.
Were Iran to lose control of Khuzestan, it would also be losing the region from which 85% of its oil, and 60% of its gas, comes from. In other words, the loss of Khuzestan would destroy the Iranian economy. And even if the territory were not lost, if the Arabs of Khuzestan rose in revolt, armed with weapons bought or supplied by Saudi Arabia and the other oil-rich Gulf Arab states, the destruction unavoidably wrought on the oilfields and pipelines, either by the Arabs in revolt, or by the Iranians fighting those Arabs, could put much of Iran’s oil production out of commission for years.

I know absolutely nothing about the events in Niger. My suspicion- some sort of drug interdiction bullshit.
The Broncos are sucking HARD today.
Yeah. I’m thinking it’s not their year.
Bill Murray or Lorenzo Music?

WoT BS, rather than drugz.
Ironically, the arguments made by the likes of Posner and Cohen represent a greater long-term threat to American democracy than anything Trump has done so far.
Not so much “ironic” as “despicable”.
The argument amounts to something more simple and sinister: that presidents who express ideologies that we find outside the bounds of acceptability can be removed, despite being democratically elected by voters. Posner is also quite explicit that he is talking about political, not mental, incompetence.
What do you mean “WE”, white man?
