Champions League is back today. I guess they played football last night but I don’t really care. Tampa Bay is still tearing through the NHL while St Louis put a halt to LA’s hot start. Montreal scored eight (*!!!) goals, probably doubling their total for the year. And the Blackhawks were off last night. Hey, they still have a team in Phoenix and they won! And the Maple Leafs continue their fall back to earth and lose again.
The real sports news happens tonight, when the Astros and Dodgers face off in Game Six of the World Series. I, for one, hope its the final game although I predicted it would go to Seven before the series started. What’s the over/under on homers tonight? I’m thinking it will be a much lower-scoring game than the home run derby with fielders that occurred Sunday. But we’ll only have to wait 12 hours and change to find out.

It depends on the warrant – sometimes minor crap, i.e. Traffic Failure to Appear Warrants or low misdemeanors – can have a limited area entered. This (not the DQ slurry). Costco is the only place that sells pumpkin pie here. It’s pretty bad, but it’s better than no pumpkin pie. I’ve never made a pie, but I love eating them.
As the host for Thanksgiving for the past couple of years, I’ve made many pies. Pumpkin ones are easy, and no one really cares if the custard cracks during the baking. To make it even easier, rather then a pastry crust, I do a crushed gingersnap crust.

I’ve already started the long term prep work (making sure that appropriate beers will be on tap, this year a nut brown and a saison are the plan). Cooking and prep work starts the Monday before Thanksgiving, with people starting to arrive around noon on the day itself.
I’m still working on what the menu will be, as the only constants on it are pumpkin pie, turkey, and bacon macaroni and cheese.
I host, as well. Fun holiday. I will do a rotisserie turkey again this year. Dry-brined and amazing.

Weirdness over the weekend: my wife took her car to go run an errand. A few minutes later I get a phone call – both of her rear tires went flat. Luckily she was close enough to walk home. I drive over to try ‘n’ pump up the tires but they won’t take any air. Car gets towed to a tire place – time to swap to winter tires anyways – and the mechanic says he’s never seen anything like it – no damage to the tires or rims, but both went flat at the same time.
My guess? Tires were low and got bumped off the rim from some rough pavement. Or ?

A very primitive 2003-era TPMS that – as far as I understand – determines if air is low my keeping track of the number of turns on the wheel. ie, if you hit some railroad tracks or some bad pavement, it will throw the count off, turning the low tire pressure light on.
My younger brother had something like that happen to my mom’s old Avalon (1996), probably 10 years ago. He managed to hit new reflectors just right on both sides (he’s not the best driver, better now, but still weavy). The reflectors popped up out of the asphalt, and popped both tires’ sidewalls. Luckily, we were less than 1/4 mile from our tire guy locally, and he towed us to his place for free. The tires he replaced those with lasted until the car finally blew a cylinder in 2010.

I knew a girl who told me she hated Christmas and Easter because they are so commercialized. Then I asked her what holiday she liked, and she immediately said Halloween and started going on and on about how amazing it was. When I pointed out that Halloween is stupidly commercialized too, probably more than Easter, she admitted it but didn’t alter her opinions on any of the holidays.

I do remember a study posted here saying that most fitness enthusiasts tend to be right-wing. I can see why; in fitness, you have to get up and do the hard work yourself. You can’t just complain that someone else has more muscle than you and appropriate what they worked for. It’s a purely meritocratic hobby: if you do the hard work and eat right, you’ll get results. The legend of the ghost of Clara Mills started in 1963 on a chilly autumn October morning. Walking down the corridor, Buterbaugh recalls that she heard only the normal sounds of classes changing and of students in the halls.

There is still a controversy as to whom or what Buterbaugh saw that morning in the C.C. White Building. She talked later that day with Dr. Dahl about her experience, and he in turn sought out Dr. E. Glenn Callen, Professor of Political Science.
Without revealing the details of his secretary’s experience, Dahl asked Callen if he remembered knowing anyone at NWU who might fit Buterbaugh’s description of the vision. Last night I watched Red Army which covers – mostly through interviews with Slava Fetisov – the Red Army Hockey team training, coaches, and the players eventual break from the communist system. Well worth a watch for fans of Hockey or Cold War history.

Most insurance plans have a pretty healthy bump for substance abuse treatment. Still, anything that hurts the ‘treatment industrial complex’ is fine by me.
I think the problem is that addiction treatment now is mandated in all insurance. So instead of paying that healthy bump and getting real treatment, the insurance companies now add in coverage for some watered down version of treatment that doesn’t begin to cover the real costs.
God grant me the serenity to accept the payments I cannot change, the courage to change the payments I can, and the wisdom to repeal Obamacare.

I know some people would say that this is the company’s fault and that they should shell out more money so that their employees can have decent health insurance. But Obama and the Democrats constantly assured us that this would work like a well-oiled machine; they said they had all the right incentives in place for individuals, employers, and insurers. So they can’t offload the blame onto anyone else; they were steering the ship and it hit an iceberg.
And no one, anywhere, should let people forget that the Pubs *chose* not to get rid of it when they had the chance; and I’m not talking about the weak sauce “replacements” they peddled, I mean actual repeal. It was their one chance to do something consequential and get rid of a big govt program that is a demonstrable failure and they didn’t do it by choice.

A Twitter thread by author Ta-Nehisi Coates is gaining traction on Twitter in response to chief of staff John Kelly’s comments that the Civil War started from a “lack of ability to compromise.”
The 31-tweet thread, which can be read in full here, has garnered thousands of likes and retweets. It addresses Kelly’s comments, slamming them as inaccurate, “sad” and “racist.”

In an interview on Fox News, Kelly said that the Civil War was started because of a “lack of ability to compromise,” and praised Robert E. Lee as an “honorable man.” In discussing the debate on whether to remove Confederate statues, Kelly called it a “mistake” to put today’s standards of morality on historical events and said he thinks that the statues should be left alone.
“Notion that we are putting today’s standards on the past is, in itself, racist — implies only white, slave-holding, opinions matter,” Coates wrote in response. “Praising Bobby Lee as an honorable man is just sad. Coyotes are awesome. Eurofolks need to be educated about their awesomeness. They’re so resourceful and adaptable that they just spread over the whole continent without batting an eye. They can thrive in nearly any environment and are awesome at getting rid of varmints. Ranchers hate them since they will go after livestock, but eggs, omelets etc.

I’d be curious if you’d still say that after having to put down a mother cow who had just given birth, had her calf torn to pieces by coyotes, and then had those same coyotes tear her belly open and start eating her intestines, while she was still alive and calling for her dead calf. Because that seriously lowered my opinion of them. And anyone running a cow-calf operation in coyote country will tell you this isn’t just a one-off.
I fucking hate coyotes. It pisses me off that I can’t shoot the ones I see out where I live.
Why can’t you shoot the ones you see?
Nothing makes a rancher out in NoDak happier than shooting any coyotes that you see on his land. We will usually stop by and give him the carcass (for the bounty $$). Without fail, he will tell you that you can hunt any time you want.
Even suburbanites aren’t too fond of them. Especially if they have had a cat or two go missing.
Of course the best cure for coyotes are wolves. The wolves in Yellowstone have systematically hunted down and killed all the coyotes. I have heard similar stories from my old neck of the woods. As wolves come back, they eliminate the competition.
Why can’t you shoot the ones you see?
Two things:
(1) I live in a neighborhood with, you know, neighbors.
(2) There’s a law against it.
There’s always the “It was coming right at me!” defense.
I know shooting within city limits is verboten, but coyotes aren’t protected are they?
I don’t think they are protected here. There’s just no shooting allowed where I live.
One of my buddies got busted (Ohio) for shooting a decoy coyote, although I don’t remember if it was for shooting a coyote or if he didn’t have explicit permission to hunt where the game warden set up the trap.
They’re opportunists, for sure. But they get their share of fucking prairie dogs up on the family land, so I can’t hate them too much.
A couple of dogs grandmother kept got loose one night and joined a pack. We figured they’d get mauled after the novelty wore off, but they came back a few days later, filthy and ravenous, probably shut out of any kills the coyotes made.
That’s really unusual. Coyotes usually kill dogs if they have the chance. I’ve had the fuckers follow me and the Dean Beasts around on our morning walks, and it wasn’t to make friends.
The coyotes around here are the biggest I’ve ever seen, and long-legged. They definitely look like they’ve got some wolf in them. And because you can’t shoot them, they are completely fearless.
Definitely surprising. Dogs have gotten loose before, and we never see them again. Either mauled or shot by neighbors.
I’ve seen coyotes stalking bird dogs in the field. Which was cool, because it was deer season as well as quail season, and I had my rifle.
Protip: If you want a coyote pelt (they can be quite nice), don’t shoot them with a .300 Win Mag.
I was walking my 8 mo dog a couple of weeks ago when we ran into a coyote in front of my house.
My doggie was excited: a new friend to play with! I locked eyes with the coyote and we formed an instant agreement to each go a different direction. My doggie was very, very upset at our inexplicable lack of friendliness.

Be careful because some of those are Mexican Grey Wolves. Often mistaken as large coyotes as they do have a tendency to scavenge for food. They released a number of them in the southern part of the state a couple years back.
They are highly endangered.
They aren’t that heavy-bodied and their heads are smaller. But they are long-legged like wolves and bigger than any coyotes I’ve seen anywhere else. The coloring is very similar, but that’s also typical coyote coloring. This pic on the AZ game and fish site looks like a typical coyote I’ve seen elsewhere, but the ones around where I live look different.

The wiki pic of the coy-wolf crosses is very much the body type I am seeing, only with a tan and gray paint scheme.
I used to see what I was sure were coy-dog crosses in WI – heavier and bigger than coyotes, and with darker and different coloration.
They tend to run rampant around the suburbs, too. I have seen them active on the night before garbage day, looking to scavenge food from garbage cans. They are smart enough to know which day to do that.
They’re in the DC metro, too. People started seeing them in Rock Creek Park in the mid 2000s. I haven’t seen any in Annapolis, but it’s probably just a matter of time.
I live in the burbs northwest of Richmond, and we see them occasionally. They’re those mutant coywolf types, a good bit bigger than the pure coyotes I used to see in Arizona.

If you’re far enough out in the desert and you’re getting harassed there’s always shoot, shovel and shutup protocol.
One of the biggest mistakes made by Illinois dept of natural resources was to introduce coyotes into Illinois. Coyotes didn’t even live in Illinois previously. Wolves did…right now I don’t think introducing wolves is a good idea.
That’s probably why we have so many in northwest Indiana. But it’s ok, we get back at Illinois by providing any thug with a valid drivers license a trunk full of free guns every time they cross the border.
