Hopefully, sloopy actually READS his PMs and knows to sleep in today. Then again, that may be hopeless with a house full of kids. SP is sleeping off our massive consumption last night, and I’m dealing with work crises. It’s a great day, and the only thing which will make it greater is… links.
So here you are, a caring mother whose kid is getting bullied at school. No-one in the CYA administration will do a thing about it unless you’ve got hard evidence so they can avoid any potential lawsuit or social media hoo-hah. You get hard evidence. Then they have you arrested. This is your government at work.
I’m sure the change in dictator president in Zimbabwe will make all the difference in the world.
You know who ELSE was beloved by the Arabs? Of course, the only way for this to be a positive is for a revival of Wahabiism, which ought to turn out just fine this time, right?
Is there anything better than seeing Jerry Jones suffer? Well, yeah, the painful death of anyone named Irsay, but still, this is a nice consolation prize.
Now, obligatory Old Guy Music, in this case one of the best of the prog-rock bands of yesteryear, and almost forgotten today. Their music went over many folks’ heads, but you can sure hear their influence on bands like Queen, Tool, and… well, anyone who did prog rock. You gotta love a band who called Black Sabbath fans “…a bunch of fucking cunts.”
FIRST!
Also, hope all the American Glibs had a Happy Thanksgiving. I assume the tryptophan/alcohol is the reason for your tardiness on comments this morning.
I’m not aware, because I was 5, but I wonder if Mugabe was celebrated like Mnangagwa in 1980.
Anyway, don’t celebrate just yet, Zimbabweans.
The new president promised that he’d serve all Zimbabweans. This reminded me of a classic episode of The Twilight Zone…
But what about the Rhodesians?
Fuck them and the horse they…

You mean the people who turned that area into a very productive agricultural nation even though they had virtually no international support?

That was a Colossal mistake …

For my own edification, I was looking at arguments for and against net neutrality. I was going in with the sense that it was a pretty bad idea, and pretty quickly decided that it was a stupid idea. So, I Googled “net neutrality is stupid”, and came across this unmitigated derp.
I think I made it through two paragraphs.
Really? I didn’t make it past the first line.
I didn’t make it past the URL.
I didn’t even hover over the link.
There was a link ?
I don’t even know who you people are. What am i doing here? TAXI!!
The free market arguments against net neutrality are stupid and risible. What free markets do is fuck you over. Everything. Free market health care. You have money to pay large medical bills or you lose your house …or die. Free market petrol and gas industry. See how that’s turning out with climate change. Free market toxic waste disposal. Ahh …that we don’t have anymore because the free market was killing people. – very high intellect on this one. Not sure I am up to it. Good arguments right here. Too good.
The fwee market arguments against net neutwality are stupid and wisible. He has a wife, you know?
Thwo him to the gwound!
Today I learned:
Free market healthcare = Strict government licensure at all career levels, a major percentage of dollars spent being spent by government programs, laws that require every citizen to purchase health insurance, “certificate of need” laws, a 10+ year approval for new drugs, and countless other radical laissez-faire measures like these.
If there was a true free market we would have no women voting, no civil rights, no environmental quality, no living wage, no land use and zoning laws, no cops, no fire department, no inverse condemnation. – holly shit. I never though if it that way. Well I just turned socialist. I am going to write a long post about how I used to be a libertarian until i saw the error of my ways. I hope I get published
Are we talking European “Civil Rights” or real Civil Rights? And ditching land use and zoning laws would be a win-win.
No land use and zoning laws? Sign me up!
In all seriousness, a guest on the Tom Woods show mentioned something interesting: the fact that there don’t seem to be very many “former libertarians”. It actually seems to be that the majority of libertarians used to be either Republicans or Democrats, but they became disillusioned with those groups and discovered libertarianism.
It makes sense to me… I don’t see how anyone could read through Mises, Hayek, and Rothbard, apprehend their ideas, then go back to the sophistry slop dished out by mainstream politicians. It would be like a craft beer connoisseur changing his preference back to Bud Light.
My standard retort to NN lovers is simple – do you believe we should demolish the interstate highway system? Or expand it to run to every podunk town?
The internet is effectively a digital equivalent to the road network, where more economically active areas are more heavily serviced. Should Kanab, UT get the same road priorities as San Fran?
Hey I drive past Kanab UT at least once a month… Maybe NN isn’t a bad idea.
I have a F-book friend who is going crazy about this. He posted a meme to ‘disprove’ reasons analysis about it. It said that Verizon admitted in 2013 that NN was the only thing keeping them from implementing some throttling. I was surprised because NN wasn’t implemented till 2015.
I think the one people are most concerned about is companies restricting certain content and giving faster access to content to companies that pay them. I believe this rule goes back way farther than 2015.
However, I actually am struggling to get a good picture of what rules change and what rules were implemented before. Every single article I read on this is ideological and vague.
No shit. No one has any idea what these regulations look like, what they used to look like, or what regulations that ostensibly will match their preferences will look like. There will instead be a few dozen highly paid lawyers paid buckets of money by a few ISPs that will understand the regulations, and the ISPs will go about the boring, work-a-day task of capturing the regulators. Which I expect to take between two and three minutes.
Agglomerating power into the byzantine system of regulatory rule making does not protect “the little guy.” NN advocates are children that do no understand the way the world works. They are incapable of operating at any level beyond “ideological and vague.” Those handful of lawyers, the ones that can’t blink and can’t stop swimming or else they die, will have no problem with this.
I have a 700 page handbook on telecom law from my engineering days that I hit people with when they bring up net neutrality.
“Verizon admitted in 2013 that NN was the only thing keeping them from implementing some throttling.”
NN is why they originally dropped unlimited pricing. It’s not feasible to let some bandwidth hog download petabytes of data at the expense of every customers service in the area. If you can’t throttle that user (because everyone has to be tested the same under NN) than you have to come up with a another way to deal with that situation like tiered data pricing. Unlimited can back when Trump was elected and it was already obvious NN was going bye bye.
I saw some meme posted a few days ago with examples of “bad things ISPs have already done!!1!eleven”
IIRC it was “Comcast throttled torrents and lied about it (and then stopped once they were caught and people got mad)”, followed by a bunch of bitching about various cell phone carriers not supporting some miscellaneous smartphone apps.
I’ve figured out most of the people bitching about the NN rollback should be bitching about “parallel lines” rent seeking regulations.
But all of these companies [insert list of content producers] say we need to do this.
Seriously that I have seen this as an argument, just shows the inability to form consistent arguments. The argument boils down to: “we can’t listen to the Corrupt corporations, we have to listen to these ones.”
Most of the people just hate Comcast, keep calling it a monopoly on internet. Nevermind the fact that cell companies offer internet service as well as satellite. And it keeps getting better and better. I usually ask if they know what’s in the 400 pages of the NN bill. Of course I don’t know either but I’m not the ones married to the idea of NN
The local monopolies on internet access are about to be broken. There are two companies planning to make a Global Network of thousands of satellites to provide fast, moderately low latency internet to everyone on the planet.
One of these companies is SpaceX. Once these two constellations are in orbit, there will be a ceiling to both price and speed for everyone on the planet. Any companies charging more than the space-based companies or offering slower speed than the space-based companies will simply go out of business.
And since it appears that there will be at least two of these companies, they will not be able to wipe out the competition and then Jack up prices as a monopolist.
It is actually a useful thing to know that the biggest supporters of Net Neutrality are Communists.
Exactly
They are entitled to the fruits of your labor, because you shouldn’t be making an evil profit!
One of the arguments against net neutrality? The Young Turks are for it.
I’m sure the change in dictator president in Zimbabwe will make all the difference in the world. – they’ll get the right one. Maybe no this time or the next but eventually. And then paradise
Imma guess not. What gobsmacks me is that people in these shitholes don’t get that the cult of personality surrounding strongmen, coupled with weak checks on power, is the problem. It’s totally dependent on the benevolence of the particular dictator, and, as we all know, power corrupts.
You are gobsmacked because you are missing that all of the things you mention there are things that Zimbabweans have no concept of. They dont think like you do. Their language doesnt even have a word for ‘future’. In other words they do not plan ahead. They do not have a solid word for ‘maintenance’. That is why everything in Africa falls apart. How would they plan for future political disasters and maintain checks on power if they dont even understand the concept of ‘future’ or ‘maintain’.
Zimbabwe is a lost cause. Things will continue as they are.
RACIST!!!!!!!!!!1!!@!!!@
You misspelled ‘Lacist!!!’.
*Actually it is culture, not race that is the problem.
Interesting. I wasn’t aware of these nuances of African languages. It further supports the assertation that xe who controls language controls thought.
asseratationassertionAh, I see you watched that video I posted in the thicc thread. That guy is a racist idiot and doesn’t speak a word of any African language.
I don’t speak Shona (a major language in Zimbabwe), but I do know Swahili, which is in the same language family.
Bantu languages have a future tense, have a word for “tomorrow” and ways of saying things like “later”, “next year”, and so on. It’s true there is no single word for “future”, but they do say things like siku zijazo (days to come) and vizazi vijavyo (generations to come).
They definitely have a word for maintenance- utengenezaji; kutengeneza means to fix or repair. Replacing the ku- with a u- turns it from a verb into an abstract noun. Yes, they have words for abstract concepts. That’s another thing that idiot got wrong.
No African language and most languages in general do not have a word for airplane. In Swahili, the word for airplane is the same as the word for bird (ndege). This doesn’t stop people whose first language is Swahili from becoming pilots or air traffic controllers.
The the strongest counter is that a lot of Africans speak English. If their own languages lacked these concepts, it would be impossible for them to learn English.
In short, Africa isn’t screwed up because of African languages . It’s screwed up because of socialism.
For Zimbabwe, dem dey call Mnangagwa, ”Di Crocodile” – I mean if you can’t trust a guy nicknamed the crocodile who can you trust?

MBS is an interesting character. It certainly appears that both Trump and Netanyahu are supporters. The silence from Al-Waleed’s business partners is deafening – particularly given reports like this:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5108651/American-mercenaries-torturing-Saudi-princes.html
When I read MBS my mind goes to a common Romanian acronym which is mamaliguta cu branza si smantana (this is basically a soft polenta with salty cheese and sour cream mixed together . People often add butter and soft boiled egg to it)

Ooh, I think I’ve got the breve on my keyboard layout: Mămăligă.
I’d have to use the cedilla instead of the comma, however, for Ş and Ţ.
I do not use Romanian diacritics typing, but that is correct
I googled it and Wikipedia, unsurprisingly, has it with the diacritics.
jesus how did Witch get in there? which… or maybe edit fairy to isle 5?
My husband asked that I stop using MBS b/c he automatically think metabisulfite…
Thank you for the new food tip – I love polenta, eggs and cheese – this looks fantastic. I was going to post today asking about cheese options for khachapuri:
http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/20171120-georgias-addictive-cousin-to-pizza
You have a husband? Gaaaay
How we do it round these parts is first put a slab of butter on the plate and then add the hot polenta on the butter and leave it a bit so the butter melts. Then add crumbled salty white cheese on top and a warm soft boiled egg and use the fork to mash together and mix. In the end add the sour cream on top. This is cold and forms a contrast with the warm polenta/butter/egg/cheese mixture. Some people add fried egg instead of soft boiled.
Another form is bulz basically mix together well form into a ball and put the whole thing in the oven for a bit.
Something like ricotta salata, or basic bitch farmer’s cheese?
More like feta
Kasseri, maybe? This sounds delicious. Similar to “cheese grits” in the American south. Will make this weekend.
Thanks fairy! I would normally give you a friendly slap on the but but in this age of sexual harassment sadly I cannot
You are being very clever…
In Thanksgiving conversation yesterday, the topic of gender neutral pronouns came up.
I brought up the possibility that if gender neutral pronouns still signify gender, then they’re not much of a solution to anything, and if they’re especially unnatural to non-English speakers and people whose native language features gendered nouns, then gender neutral pronouns may be exclusionary, xenophobic, and racist–with immigrants and Spanish speakers being hardest hit.
Don’t we have an unholy conglomeration of linguists around here?
What say you?
Finnish has no gender pronouns, and yet feminists wouldn’t say Finland has gender equality. As I understand it, Farsi doesn’t have them either, and no normal person would say Iran has gender equality.
They certainly claim they have no gays…
I just recently watched a video from a channel called Langfocus about the Finnish language. He claimed that women could vote in Finland earlier than other countries and speculated about a causal link.
Turkish uses the same word for ‘he’ and ‘she’.
So does Chinese (spoken).
German goes in the opposite direction – gender is always expressed even on every noun.
I’m sorry to hear that.
Well, I wasn’t about to just sit there and take it.
I said I’d go to her sister’s house, not that I’d willingly subject myself to indoctrination.
That is a good point and I have heard it before. So far the SJW crowd is just ignoring it. At some point cognitive dissonance requires ignoring certain facts and arguments.
Keep in mind Ken that that is the product of a bunch of postmodernist gibberish, the fundamental premise of which is that there is no such thing as objective truth because everything in your head is biased. Thus all of the ‘its just a social construct’ drivel and ‘I identify as a purple hamster’ nonsense.
I see a tree. You see a tree. If it is not a tree and we can never know what it really is then its true identity is indistinguishable from an identity that doesnt exist. It would be insane to treat it as anything but a tree.
I will keep using gendered pronouns.
It’s that the SJW crowd aren’t good at thinking, much less philosophy. It’s almost entirely about social signaling being part of that ingroup. The post-modernists (looking at 20th Century France) didn’t write that there was no such thing as truth. It’s true that everyone is biased. Gender is a social construct. But that does not mean a person is whatever they claim to be. Because society is not dictated by one person. Based on your own self-description, you identifying as feminine and expecting other people to use feminine pronouns, would be absurd. Our society is pretty clear on the gender of hairy lumberjacks. On the other hand, if you saw Blaire White walking down the street, and knew nothing else about her, I’m thinking you would refer to her as “she”. I would also refer to her as “she” because that makes the most sense to me based on my understanding how language works. Even though I know she describes herself as “biologically male”. If you were informed of that, you might be inclined to call her “he”.
Trees are not a social construct. The relevant social construct is that people speaking English agree what “tree” means. You and I can both look at this little green thing growing out of the ground. Not knowing any better, I just see a small plant. You, being an expert on trees, bring with you that knowledge and experience, know it’s a sapling. Even though we both agree what a tree is, you see a tree, and I don’t. Post-modernists use the term “knowledges” plural. The difference, is that if you point out “look, the shape of the leaves is the same as this big tree growing near it”, I’ll agree it’s a baby tree. A SJW would only agree it’s what the other SJW’s say it is. That’s not post-modernist thinking, that’s mindlessly following a cult.
“It’s that the SJW crowd aren’t good at thinking, much less philosophy. It’s almost entirely about social signaling being part of that ingroup.”
You could have stopped there sir. Concise and accurate. These people are about making sure you know they hold the right values and ideas holy and you are a heretic that needs conversion or hell if you don’t…
I went to a friend’s family’s Thanksgiving and sat next to a 10 y/o kid and his 14 y/o sister (who I didn’t know was a girl or boy until I’d overheard enough conversation). The 10 y/o starts giving his sister a hard time about pretending to be a boy, to which she responds, “I can identify as whatever I want.” Then he says something like, “you can identify as stupid”. I managed to stop them by telling the 10 y/o that he should identify as someone who likes turkey stuffing (he refused to eat it).
The 10-year-old sounds like a budding alt-right shitlord.
My niece is studying physics at an Elite College on the East Coast. The topic of gender pronouns came up, and she said they just use “they.” Her mother said that it made things confusing, because you don’t know whether they are referring to a single person or a group. Apparently they have a friend of the family who identifies as they. My niece disagreed that it could ever be confusing.
Apparently, in her circles they think the pronoun xe is ridiculous. I tried to tell them that in other locations their attitude was offensive. But, being 21 years old, she did not believe such a thing existed.
Just wait, sweetie. Just wait. You will see.
I don’t understand why people keep wanting to stick their flag in the ground on these silly word games. Soon enough their new pronouns will be deemed offensive. It will follow the same park as the disabled. We went from crippled to handicapped to differently-abled. As each new word picks up all the baggage that goes with the designation, it will become offensive and a new word will have to be invented.
Same path. Jeez, auto correct…. Never post from your phone.
That story about the mother in Virginia is upsetting.
Assholes. One and all.
It’s Ocean View Elementary. Anybody from this area knows that’s the absolute last place you want to send your kid.
And I’m a little confused on the charges. Virginia is a single party state when it comes to recording. In other words, as long as one of the participants is aware of the recording, it’s legal.
I said that yesterday. The only thing I can think of is that the child can’t consent so she isn’t a party to the recording. Or they’re gonna charge the mom for the times when the backpack was unattended, meaning the girl wasn’t always present and not a party to any conversation.
My question is: how did they discover the device in the first place? A search of the backpack is illegal under the 4A unless they got a warrant. And I’m sure they didn’t.
Norfolk public schools are heinous in general and the administration is corrupt. I’m sure they figured some way to cover their asses.
I’m thinking the charges were that the mother was the one doing the recording when she was not a party to the conversation(s).
Also current jurisprudence says the schools can go right on and root through students belongings. It’s not right, but it’s the current precedent.
No they cant. They can look in lockers because they’re school property. But backpacks, purses, wallets and pockets are considered an extension of the student and a warrant is necessary unless the student is suspected of an articulable crime in progress. This kid was 8, so that’s highly unlikely.
Whether or not the child is a concentable party to recording the interactions, you’re wrong about how the courts have handled the search authority of schools in regards to students persons and bags of late.
It’s one thing for the school to search the backpack to see if the student is in violation of school rules. It’s another for a cop to search it without reasonable suspicion of a crime.
If the device violates school district policy, the search by a school official could be used to discipline the student. However, a search in violation of the 4A cannot generate evidence that’s usable in a court.
It will be interesting to see what the jusge rules on a motion to exclude.
I’m thinking the charges were that the mother was the one doing the recording when she was not a party to the conversation(s).
The daughter is a party. She can consent. Itmdoesnt have to be the recorder, but can be any party to the conversation.
A defense attorney wins this easily if he puts the kid on the stand and asks if she knew of the device and that it was recording. If she says yes, there’s consent of a party to the conversations. Case closed.
“Sims was charged with felony use of device to intercept oral communication”
I’m not a lawyer, but wasn’t this a public school?
Yep. Furthermore, what is the school district’s policy on cellphones? The overwhelming majority of modern phones have recording apps, therefore they could be accused of unevenly applying the law if they allow recording devices on campuses as a matter of policy.
They’re not only going to lose here, the school district and cops will probably lose the civil suits she will file and the taxpayers will get fucked out of money because the state actors are mendacious pieces of shit.
And meanwhile, her daughter probably gets bullied even more.
If she hires a lawyer instead of a dead fish she will get off. I would think the SCOTUS rulings on recording public officials in public doing the public’s business would apply here. She may even be able to sue their balls off.
In the end the taxpayers will pay for the malfeasance and the ineptness of the usual assholes that run that school. The tax payers always are the ones that lose. Makes me wonder if I should just quit all my efforts and go live off the government’s teat.
The Virginia Mom story is incredible.

Read what?
“Women lead men on, and then shout harassment.”
I think this is nothing new.
I had that happen to me once. The girl lead me on so I went up to her and she ignored the advance changing her demeanour. But she didn’t shout harassment. I had a witness to boot. I think it’s just some kind of subconscious power game of some kind. Or not. Whatever.

I just found out a guy I played soccer with back when were teenagers died. His daughter was killed in a car accident when she was 16 a few years back. From what I hear he never recovered; though he had been diabetic since he was a kid.
Hits home.
Damn. Sorry to hear that.
It’s funny (eerie) because those two or three particular years of ‘A’ soccer were the best I ever enjoyed (AAA, provincial and national tryouts etc. where it was much more serious were a bit of a drag; mostly because by that time I was befell with knee injuries and aimless coaching) and recently popped into my head.
His dad (a really nice guy who died young as well) had coached too. So I wondered what happened to a few of those guys. One guy I bump into from time to time and is a minor celebrity here (I bumped into him in Paris of all places in 2004) but the others no clue.
Sorry.

To make things a little better I like another story linked on that webpage.
What Countries’ Constitutions Reveal about How Societies Evolve
Analyses of governing documents from 194 countries could help people fighting for human and environmental rights
Timing can be everything when it comes to successfully expanding constitutional rights. Now, a study looking at how constitutions around the world have evolved has revealed patterns that could help people predict the best moment to introduce such changes.

O.K., I’m sure you can guess where I’m going with this. I’ve had much to be thankful for — but every one of those good things is now very much under assault.
It’s true that we’re having a moment of awakening on sexual harassment, and it’s possible that this will turn out to have been a turning point. But with a self-admitted sexual predator in the White House, it’s hard to feel confident.
Meanwhile, everything this president and this Congress are doing on economic policy seems designed, not just to widen the gap between the wealthy and everyone else, but to lock in plutocrats’ advantages, making it easier to ensure that their heirs remain on top and the rest stay down.
To the barricades, brothers and sisters! Don’t let America slide into the Abyss!
Get out there and punch a Nazi, right fucking now. Krugabe will be watching out his office window, cheering.
“a self-admitted sexual predator in the White House”

Exactly. These people are delusional and worse, constantly projecting their faults on others, then making like they are heroic for fighting these windmills.
Fucking douches the lot of them.

Why do you object to government being the final authority on whom wins and whom loses, even if it means we all (except for the ruling class of course) have to live in misery, huh, shitlord? Abject poverty and human slavery are better than a system where some get to have more and others, even when it is totally their own fault for not trying to do better, or constantly making the wrong choices, and so, end up with the short end of the stick! Justice is being free from the consequences of bad choices except when government forces you to make them.
Viva la revolucion!
All we need are the Right. Top. Men. Haven’t you been paying attention to 6,000 years of human history.?
Made a few online purchases last night. May order a couple more things later this weekend (I’m at relatives till tomorrow) – once I get home and assess current status/models of equipment on hand. Went to downtown Fayetteville NC for Black Friday back in ’99 or ’00 to pick up some RAM sticks – never again. No bargain will make me deal with *people* like that.
As an FYI, most of the new release films from this year/last year are less than $9 at amazon on blu-ray. Batman v Superman limited edition is something like $3. A few good options there. Also picked up a home/portable jump start kit for $50 (75% off).
In regards to Black Sabbath fans being a bunch of cunts, I give you Black Sabbath and their fans in their flower child/hippie iteration at Summer Slam 1973:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqj4UTexULQ
I would argue that Iommi’s tuning (See “Children of the Grave” and “into the Void”) is still influential–in fact, it’s the heart of what became Desert Rock/Stoner Metal–some of the most interesting music to come out of the underground over the past 25 years. It’s interesting to note that Sabbath was a progressive band in a lot of ways–from lyrics to sound (See “Fairies where Boots” for an example of the latter) and, indeed, Iommi did stints in both Earth and Jethro Tull.
I would also argue that Geezer Butler may be among the greatest lyricists in the history of Rock (perhaps second only to Dylan, and in some cases, surpassing old Bob). I find “War Pigs” more eloquent and scathing than “Masters of War”. In fact, “Masters of War” suggests a fundamental misunderstanding of Christianity. The lyrics of “Children of the Grave” may surpass both songs.
To whatever extent critical acclaim eluded Black Sabbath, it was partially because they were used as a whipping boy to punish their fans. Remember that part in The Rocky Horror Picture Show where Eddie, the physical embodiment of Rock & Roll, is let loose from the freezer? With “LOVE” tattooed across one set of knuckles and “HATE” tattooed across the other, he immediately starts rocking the house, on the one hand, and mowing everyone down with his motorcycle, on the other. Eventually, the Doctor, the embodiment of the ’70s, murdered Rock and Roll to put a stop to its destruction of their elitist shin dig–a sin for which the Doctor could not be forgiven.
I’m thankful for progressive rock (and disco) because without them, the rebirth of rock and roll by way of glam and punk rock might never have happened. There have always been elitists at the top trying to turn the music into high art, but rock’s vitality has always been the gutter dwelling fans that everyone else loves to hate. They were the fans of Gene Vincent, Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, T-Rex, AC/DC, the Sex Pistols, Black Flag, and Slayer. Disco, progressive rock, Nickleback, and Justin Bieber is what happens without those deplorables.
When I used to see jugalos walking down the street, I wouldn’t think badly of them. I’d think, “Rage on, mighty warrior”.
When there is no more room for Black Sabbath fans–and their spiritual progeny–only the dead shall walk the earth.
Disco, progressive rock, Nickleback, and Justin Bieber is what happens without those deplorables.
I don’t disagree, Ken, but I still loves me some Earth Wind & Fire and Steely Dan.
Try some Blowfly.
I would have posted this today:

Sweet.
Holy shit. I just agreed with you.
#metoo
I love the Juggalos after that DC protest. I knew a lot of people like them growing up too.
The gays who made disco what it is were certainly deplorables back in the 70s.
Prince MBS’s biggest fan
This reform push is giving the youth here a new pride in their country, almost a new identity, which many of them clearly relish. Being a Saudi student in post-9/11 America, young Saudis confess, is to always feel you are being looked at as a potential terrorist or someone who comes from a country locked in the Stone Age.
Now they have a young leader who is driving religious and economic reform, who talks the language of high tech, and whose biggest sin may be that he wants to go too fast. Most ministers are now in their 40s — and not 60s. And with the suffocating hand of a puritanical Islam being lifted, it’s giving them a chance to think afresh about their country and their identity as Saudis.
He’ll have those trains running on time.
Then, he’ll retire the iron glove, honest.
A little people. A silly people. Greedy, barbarous and cruel.
Friedman was on Squawk Box a couple weeks ago proclaiming that the Kingdom has essentially been run by Alzheimer’s and MBS is a breath of fresh air. Andrew Ross Sorkin (a Friedman sycophant) tried to ask a couple questions regarding imprisonment of Princes as he had literally been in Riyadh only a few weeks earlier interviewing Al-Waleed; as-of this morning Sorkin is reporting that the charges of corruption have been found to be incorrect (by MBS goverment) in fewer than 1% of cases.
I have difficulty summoning any fucks to give about how Saudi Arabia governs itself. I’m more concerned about our government getting drawn in to fight Saudi battles for them. Fuck that noise.
^^^^ this. You know what the best way to protect our national interests is? Stop inserting our dick in hornets nests
I’m tired of our web of defense treaties with other countries that basically say “we’ll protect all of you, and in exchange for that protection you will provide us nothing at all”. I can understand that we don’t want all these pussies getting taken over by the Russians or the Chinese, but JFC, get something concrete in return for it! The Saudis are going to sell their oil whether we protect them or not. All we do is make it more profitable for them to do so by ensuring the protection of their government.
Can you imagine the howling the proggies would be engaging in if American interventionism across the globe actually resulted in benefit to the American tax payer? Did you miss the shit about us stealing Iraqi oil and the response to Trump when he pointed out for all the blood and toil we wasted there, we sure fucked up letting the Chinese then keep the oil?
Yeah, that and exporting Wahabbism around the world.
as-of this morning Sorkin is reporting that the charges of corruption have been found to be incorrect (by MBS goverment) in fewer than 1% of cases.
They’re almost as efficient as the Chicago Police conduct review board.

Dear Daily Fail-
Not a bikini.
Headline fail. That was no bikini.
I’m starting to think “bikini” means something different in England. Because the British tabloids keep doing that.
DON’T ANY OF YOU PEOPLE SLEEP?!
No.
/Chronic Insomniac
I popped a couple benadryl and slept like Ted Kennedy after leaving a woman to die in a river.
Unfortunately my phone died at some point, so I overslept by half an hour and was late to work.
*checks phone battery*
4%
*plugs in phone.*
I’m just glad I have a plug-in alarm clock. I don’t pay enough attention to my phone’s battery state to rely on it for that.
Best way I found to fight my insomnia – which was getting so bad that I was only getting 1-3 hours of interrupted sleep – was to start staying up later and shooting for 5-6 hours instead of 7-8. It’s called “Sleep Restriction” and actually works quite well. Stay up late enough and get up early enough that you are tired when you go to bed.
So I go to bed at 11PM and wake up at 5AMish. I also have a lot more time to read, relax, and listen to music. I’m a bit groggy in the morning, but a lot better than before where I was just tossing and turning. Also walking a few miles a day also helps.
We were talking about this recently and someone (Hyperion?) brought up the concept of two sleep blocks per night, sometimes with a couple hours between them. I often fall asleep for 4-5 hours or so and then I’m wide awake in the middle of the night. If I read for awhile, I can usually go back to sleep. Trouble is, you need to hit it pretty early to give yourself enough time and still get going at a reasonable time int the morning.
What would be interested would be a breakdown of morning people, insomniacs and so on.
My problem with insomnia is mostly that my optimal sleep span runs from 2am-noon, and my work shift starts at 7, so I try to fall asleep a few hours before the wiring in my head wants to, and have to drag myself out just as it’s getting ready for the long haul.
After getting a concussion at age 14 I have spent the last 40 years sleeping in 2 hour blocks and usually getting about 4 hours a night (some nights I don’t sleep), and often wonder if this condition has not left me less mentally capable than I would otherwise have been had I been able to sleep the full 8 hrs they claim is needed for optimal brain function.
I do agree that I found I sleep better during the day than I do at night, so maybe I should move 12 time zones and see if that helps….
For me I generally can’t get to sleep before 10, and I definitely can’t sleep past 7 – unless it’s pitch black. Pretty useful on the whole since I get up at 5 for work on weekdays. Normally work 7-3ish – more productive first thing in the morning, but my self-schedule at work is pretty regimented.
Lately I’ve been getting a couple hours of sleep then waking up for an hour or two with my mind racing – revving over some technical issue from work or something I want to write (and I can’t find my digital audio recorder to get it down – may just start using my phone to save me some angst – once I get the ideas out of my head (ie. sorted), I can “concentrate” on sleeping).
On the ship, it’s sometimes more of an issue with the watch rotations and sleeping at odd hours, but since you’re in a completely confined, pitch black space, not that much of an issue.
My problem – I was going to bed earlier and earlier trying to catch up on my sleep. I would only fall asleep for an hour or two, and then wake up feeling not tired at all. Like I was just “getting a nap”. After that I would toss ‘n’ turn, get up, try to sleep on the sofa, read, etc – but felt too shitty and frustrated to concentrate on anything. Eventually I would pass out at 4AMish – if I was lucky – and then drag myself into work feeling like shit.
A few nights of that and I was getting afraid of going to bed!
More on Sleep Restriction Therapy
That’s interesting – thanks for the link.
How about beds? We’re thinking about trying one of the Sleep Number models. Any of y’all own one?
Unfortunately it doesn’t address my problem. I have no problem sleeping all the way through six hours. But I need naps during the day and I can’t sleep more than six hours at night no matter how hard I try.
I sleep on a Sealy mattress – firm. Never did the sleep number thing, luckily my wife and I like it firm (woah!)
I’ve got a sleep number, and I love it. Just need to take the time to get it dialed in to you.
My wife liked it for a while, and then she got pregnant. I suspect that no bed would be comfy until that’s over.
We just got the basic model…no upgrades or anything. They will try to sell you on some really pointless upgrades.
We did later get a 2 inch memory foam topper from Amazon (less than half the cost of a Sleep Number topper).
I have no problem sleeping all the way through six hours
I can live on six.
Maybe – I’m no expert – restrict yourself to five a few days, stop the naps, and then – after a few weeks – slowly add more time to your sleep schedule.
Sometimes sleeping is just a fucked up exercise in frustration. So who know what works best for you?
My wife liked it for a while, and then she got pregnant. I suspect that no bed would be comfy until that’s over.
Yes, as I recall pregnancy is just about degrees of discomfort.
Thanks for the advice – I’m gonna go check them out.
I am a big fan of mine. I got the “it” bed, which is the online only competitor to the Caspers of the world. Moving to a foam bed from an innerspring bed took a night or two to get used to, but I don’t think I’ll ever go back to an innerspring mattress.
I’ve slept on some of the other Sleep Number beds, and I’ve liked them. I sleep pretty hot, and I’m rather heavy, which can be problems with foam beds. Some foams hold onto heat and if you don’t have enough support for your weight you can sink in and mess up your spine alignment (and trap more heat). With the setting set high, I got the support I wanted and the heat dissipation was good.
I have the Sleepnumber bed and I sleep like a baby on it when I’m alone. I move around in my sleep constantly, which has no effect on me as long as I’m not bumping into someone else.
It’s really nice to have an employer with flexible work hours to accommodate all the various sleep schedules. I really believe that different people have different innate circadian rhythms and trying to alter them is futile and only induces misery. I’ve always been a relatively early to bedder. Even in college when everyone was staying up until 3AM, I would fade at 11. People thought I was a party-pooper.
I don’t know what my ideal schedule would be. I’ve been working 9-5 so long I haven’t had a chance to figure it out. But I do know that 9-5 – while better than the overnights I used to work – isn’t it. I am always crashing between noon and 3.
Heh. The concept of “Flexible working hours” here translates to “the employee will accomodate the needs of the business, their outside schedules be damned”
Yep
I’m a second shift guy by nature… I was never able to do the “getting up at the crack of dawn” thing very well. I wake up at 9 or 10 AM and get tired around 2 AM, so second shift is perfect for me.
I haven’t slept more than 6 hours in a couple decades. It’s just not ever going to happen.
I do the two block sleep pattern myself, because I can’t fall asleep before 2AM most nights.
So I sleep 2-6:30 AM and get a nap at 6-8 PM.
My natural body clock wants to run on California time, even though I haven’t lived there in 10 years.
Just wait until you get old, dude.
Dinner at 3:30 PM?
Yeah, but you get a sweet discount!
Not gonna make a big difference if the only shit you can eat is what you can gum on account of your teeth are all gone…
So what are you trying to say, I can’t eat Steak anymore?
dentures saved my fucking Life. Sinus infection Teeth infections, all damn near killed me,
dentures rock!
I happen to have the luck of having super strong teeth by generic inheritance, and expect this is never going to be an issue for me (have never had a cavity and had to switch my dentist after the fuckwad I used to go to claimed their was one because the X-ray said so, drilled down to the root without finding it, and after I reamed him out ended up paying for the crown I got from the guy that is now my dentists), but know too many people not that lucky.
Congratulations. My teeth have always been absolute shit. I think of “teeth” as one of nature’s mistakes.
Try low dose Trazodone. Utterly non-habit forming and it retains its efficacy in perpetuity. It’s actually an anti-depressant that isn’t used too frequently due to its major side effect, extreme sedation. If you keep the dose low, you’ll get all the sedation with no other side effects. My buddy has terrible insomnia and swears by this drug; says he’ll never go off it.
Jill Filipovic has got it all sussed out (NYT)
Girls today receive two conflicting messages: Be mighty and be good.
Now-pervasive “Girl power” messaging declares that girls can be anything they want. But in practice, the more subtle rewards for compliant behavior show girls that it pays to be sweet and passive. The sexual harassment revelations that have come to light over the past few months show just how dangerous this model can be.
Routinely, victims of harassment and assault didn’t challenge their abusers or immediately file complaints not just because they didn’t want to endanger their own careers (although there was that, too), but because women have been conditioned for acquiescence to authority and male power their whole lives.
Men, on the other hand, have been raised to embrace risk-taking and aggression. Girls are taught to protect themselves from predation, and they internalize the message that they are inherently vulnerable; boys move through the world not nearly as encumbered and certainly not seeing their own bodies as sources of weakness or objects for others’ desires.
While girls are being told to protect themselves, too many boys are growing into the men they need to be protected from.
” I blame society. Society made me what I am.”
“While girls are being told to protect themselves, too many boys are growing into the men they need to be protected from.”
This thinking will either be the end of civil society, or the end of this ideology.
Umm, this is utterly bogus since it’s been shown that males are much less likely to report being raped/abused than women. What do they chalk that up to? Probably toxic masculinity or something.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_of_males
Fixed that for ya
These people could fuck up a wet dream
So what are parents to do if they want to raise both their sons and their daughters to avoid, or dismantle, these traps? Raising children without gendered roles and expectations seems to serve those children well, but that’s tough to do outside of Sweden — in an age of “gender reveal parties” and the princessification of American girlhood, asking a sales clerk for help buying a baby shower gift brings the automatic response, “For a boy or a girl?”
As I’ve stated before, psychiatry is going to become even more lucrative in 20 or so years when these kids grow up.
It’s already a religion, declaring people that don’t conform to be heretics and demanding their rights be restricted. Unfortunately the real trucking crazies keep getting passes as the mental health cultists make excuses for their insanity.
This Thanksgiving, Thank Donald J. Trump
Uh oh, someone at NR isn’t towing the company lion…
And that is going to keep happening if the Dem’s will only keep yelling “Squirrel!” for him. Oh, and running his re-election campaign.
I don’t follow them anymore – I know KDW is a Never-Trumper but I didn’t think that was the “standard” position there?
Big time.
Oh, wow. Kind of a surprise, TBH. Though I see the date appears to be February. Perhaps they’ve recovered somewhat.
Not a chance.. too many amongst them love them those D.C. cocktail parties.
I don’t understand why anyone would want to brave shopping on Black Friday. Buying online is more relaxed and, I imagine, price competitive. And since I look at time as money, why waste the former?
I suppose some people just have to get “the deal” even if it isn’t that much of one.
I don’t get it, either. I just ordered a new holster from my comfy chair, a nice cup of coffee on the table next to me. Why the fuck would I put on pants and fight crowds?
I got out of bed long enough to get the girls up and to go back to the bed and grab my phone to comment here while the A-Team plays in the background. There’s no fucking way in the world I’d trade that for stores full of assholes chasing that few extra dollars off on the 65” TV I can get a few days before Christmas anyway?
Sorry, retailers. Your day has passed.
But, getting assaulted by some white trash while trying to secure a parking spot at the mall is the most fun way a family can spend time together right?
We needed a few staple items yesterday afternoon (~4PM) and went to Walmart. Black Friday sales started at 6 PM and the store was literally filling with disgusting hordes with their children in tow. In the store, many were sitting on the floor next two pallets of merchandise holding babies (or just letting them roll on the floor while the “parents” played with phones) while the older children ran through aisles until Walmart deployed workers to block aisle entrances.
F’ing third world.
I found your problem.
Going to Walmart is not a choice I want to make ever, let alone during this time frame. Unless I’m doing it for anthropology research.
That sounds like the seventh level of hell. Jesus.
I need a couple of screws a specific size and wanted to pop over to Lowes to get them. Then I remembered Black Friday. A 30 minute trip, including travel time, turned into a 2 or 3 hour trip.
I can wait. Maybe I’ll try tomorrow.
I avoid needing anything that requires me to go to some location close to the local malls until January for a reason…
No small hardware stores in your area?
Only one I know when out of business a couple of years ago.
That is a real tragedy.
Marathon or just one episode?
The whole series is on demand in STARZencore. Just watching a few until the game start at 11.
Where muh green energy??
Natural gas lines don’t cause buildings to crack. Just sayin’.
They weren’t drilling for nat gas. They were taking samples for geothermal energy. Water was released into anhydrite and the resulting gupsum swelling is what’s caused the problems. From a confined and known aquifer.
In other words, the government chasing “green” solutions has directly caused this. Because they didn’t bother to test what the bores contained before they hit the water source they knew was there. Which is what a private company would have done for fear of facing crippling lawsuits if this resulted in their watch n
Fucking retarded meddlesome asshats.
Yeah, that’s what I meant. By skipping the easy and proven way to heat their city (nat gas), they went for a ‘green’ solution that fucked everything up.
My first two sentences should been rhetorical questions.
Like saying someone should be punched in the face, repeatedly.
Depends; is it a Nazi? Can you just claim it’s a Nazi?
You can claim anything is a Nazi. I have a Nazi trash bag for crying out loud.
What goes in that bag?
Ask Elizabeth Nolan Brown.
Someone with half a brain needs to take over the CDU/CSU. I don’t see any other way out of their energy madness. The Greens and SPD obviously want to make things worse. The FDP seems to waffle on the issue. And the AfD (the “Nazis”) are ostensibly rational about energy but they are the 3rd rail of German politics.
This is one helluva good group we got here.

Bonus boob facts:
https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/head-games/201305/what-is-it-about-men-and-breast-size
Study found:
1. Less financially secure men prefer bigguns.
2. Men more interested in fatherhood prefer bigguns.
3. Your size preference will change depending on your last meal with hunger positively correlated with ta-ta bodaciousness.
Elsewhere I have read that men who prefer mosquito bites are more likely to want a submissive woman.
I saw some study where depressed men prefer large butts. Hmm…
Don’t get me wrong, I love breasts but one of the hottest GFs I had in college was an A-cup. She was fit, had great legs and ass, and was pretty as hell. Now, even at age 40+ she bats higher than the majority of the women her age. Back then she went bra-less, wearing tank tops. She drew a lot of looks from men.
My preference is for smaller and perky, but somehow I married a woman with large ones who would never be described as submissive.
So much for that hypothesis.
Stated versus revealed preferences?
Pics?
“Study found:
1. Less financially secure men prefer bigguns.
2. Men more interested in fatherhood prefer bigguns.”
Based on that study, Q is Bob Cratchit from a Christmas Carol.
And I apparently have an eating disorder.
Good morning, Q!
28 wins big, followed by 37 and 45.
23 will murder you in your sleep.
Did you have a good Turkey Day?
Fantastic! 33 people so it was chaos, but everyone had a ton of fun and there was absolutely zero political shit.
And the Viking won!
How was yours?
It’s amazing you were able to assemble that many people and avoid any political blowouts. Kudos to the Tundra clan. Mine was comparatively mild; 5 people, turkey breast from Whole Foods and champagne/red wine. Showed some pics of India before passing out at 9:30. Great weather.
Nice! Yeah, even with a scary number of proggies, I was really happy how they just left that shit at home (other than the Priuses and a Tesla parked outside my house) 😉
Weather was amazing here, too. I had a great afternoon on the patio, tending two grills and many beers!
12/19
Looks like 12 might have some jugs… the conversion is well underway.
Tundra is wrong. 23 wins. I’m ok if she wants to murder me.
37 to place.
44 to show.
And 48 as Slave Leia is aaaaaaall right with me.
What could make a big difference is raising boys more like our girls — fostering kindness and caretaking, not just by telling them to respect women, but by modeling egalitarianism and male affection and emotional aptitude at home. While parents and other adults teach girls to protect themselves against the Harvey Weinsteins of the world, that doesn’t do much to stem the tide of Weinsteins. Raising our boys differently would.
All this gender anguish is utterly fucking baffling to me. I am not a “daddy” nor have I ever wished to be. BUT- I have spent enough time (twenty minutes would be plenty for any halfway sentient or observant person) around two-year-olds to come to the ineluctable conclusion that in the overwhelming majority of cases, there are hardwired differences between boys and girls. At the edges, there are overlaps, but as a working principle, the pretense of “gender neutrality” is bunkum. Efforts to erase this hardwired difference between boys and girls, short of chemical castration, are doomed to failure.
Now, I want my two
centsdollars!+ 1 Paper Moon.
” Raising our boys differently would.”
Who raises the majority of boys? Women.
Put that in your blame pipe and smoke it.
Haven’t they been raising their sons like that for years now? And they still haven’t see results? I guess they need to try harder.
Natural gas lines don’t cause buildings to crack. Just sayin’.
And I suppose fracking doesn’t cause earthquakes. Right, Mister Smartypants?
This is some weaponized derp.
https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/bm4353/why-we-need-to-challenge-the-culture-of-monogamy
“As someone who identifies as polysexual, I’ve often experienced negativity from those who don’t think outside of how their relationships function. At times, this judgment has come from those close to me. ‘You’re just slutty,'” Well if the shoe fits…
Monogamy is the wired-in reward to the males for sticking around and contributing resources. It’s the bare minimum assurance that the children they’re helping to raise might be their own. Without it, your incentive for investment plunges. This is why ‘cheating’ elicits an immediate emotional response. pair-bonding developed as an evolutionary strategy to deal with the seriously non-precocious nature of human offspring.
There you go again, shitlord, suggesting that nature has anything to do with human gender relations and preferences. Clearly your last stint at the re-education camp didn’t take.
Also, you’re absolutely correct on all counts. Monogamy actually benefits men more than women overall out on the savannah. It gives men with moderate (and sometimes even low) reproductive value a shot at passing on their genes. In polygamous societies, reproductively over-advantaged men would hoard all the women, leaving large swaths of the male population high and dry. Of course this didn’t benefit women that much either, since they were left competing with a harem for resources from one dude.
Of course, despite lefty anthropologists best efforts to find examples among primitive cultures, utopian sexual “free-for-all” family arrangements are pretty much non-existent. The only thing that allows such a subculture to exist today is the Pill, a modern invention that our primitive brains cannot possibly wrap themselves around.
Standard libertarian disclaimer applies: live however you like. I know there are a few folks on here who choose this lifestyle. But lefty writers and social “scientists” trying to hand wave away monogamy as some kind of toxic invention of the patriarchy is absolutely absurd. Humans evolved to be (mostly) monogamous for very good evolutionary reasons related to concealed ovulation, paternal insecurity and scarcity of resources. To pretend otherwise is derptastically stupid.
Open relationships can work – it’s just a lot of work. My (once) best friend is married but has a girlfriend on the side. His wife has a boyfriend. Add in the two kids and I wonder how my friend has time to _do_ anything.
Sooner than later this goes wrong for one of them is my guess.. Complex systems create complex problems..
Vice? That place is a hive of sexual harassment and assault. They might want to sit the whole sexuality thing out for a while.
Who is actually working today? I’m spending a half-day at the office today, but not actually doing any work.
Looking forward to my Black Friday tradition tonight: Turkey Pho.
I am, but right now I’m waiting for the Oracle Tech to get back to me.
I’m going to generate a mass email for my customers. I might go to the auction yard just to show my older kids what I’ve been up to and to puff my chest out a little so they understand what all I’ve managed to do for this sale (I did meet my goal of a $1M shoot price).
That’s about it.
That’s pretty cool.
Already did some billing. My world shuts down, so I won’t get any calls.
Catching up on paper work, designing a new business card, and researching whether or not to build a website for my business. So not really working.
Just hire someone from India to do it for $50. It’s a no-brainer.
Just don’t expect much quality of work though..
I got a Call for Manila Sunset, one of their freezers is down,
Restaurants always need Refrigeration, even on BF
i worked but am done now
I am about to head into work. Should be lots of reading, listening to music and watching the antics here. Of course I won’t be able to comment because of firewalls.
Working 3/4 of a day or so from the home office. Not opening my email, so I might actually get some stuff done.

Yeah, the deregulation is cool and some tax reform would be nice, but this is the best part of the Trump presidency.
I really dig the ponytail/baseball cap thing.
Speaking of women’s breasts… here’s the sort of thing I find myself pondering:
There is an expression (Limey in origin, I believe) about how, when things go wrong, they “go pearshaped”. I have a problem with this, because in my opinion, the perfect womanly breast is shaped exactly like (half) a pear. Pearshaped is good, not bad.
45% of the mass above the nipple, 55% below with the nipple pointing at a slight upward angle. Science has spoken.
http://www.foxnews.com/health/2014/11/13/what-perfect-breast-looks-like-according-to-men-and-women.html
My midsection begs to differ.
So in response to AlmightyJB yesterday regarding light pollution, it messes with astronomy in my case. I just moved back to Austin in August, and you just cannot do full-spectrum astrophotography for much more than moon or planets. Visually it washes out fine detail (or any detail in some cases) on nebulae and limits the magnitude of the target you can observe. The workaround is to use a monochrome sensor imaging camera with narrowband filters and you can do the exposure times needed to tease out data above noise without saturation from light pollution. Or you can drive out past Fredericksburg and Enchanted Rock with all of the equipment and banks of batteries and power supplies to run the mount, cameras, laptop, and radio.
Or just buy a Telecope
I should have specified that this is through an 8″ Celestron SCT telescope at f/10 (for deep space targets) or f/30 with a 3x Barlow for moon planetary use. The imager (camera or webcam) is placed where the eyepiece would go. You can take longer exposures through the Canon L200 lens with the Canon 5D Mark x than when you use the telescope as a lens due to the telescope gathering much more light, which saturates the pixels no matter if the light is from a star or reflecting/retracting from terrestrial sources (which tend to overwhelm everything else).
Refracting. Damn I despise autocorrect…
Telescopes don’t necessarily help. Sometimes high magnification helps (better contrast), but you still suffer from the same problem.
Part (maybe most) of the problem is a lot of outdoor lights shine a lot of their light upwards, instead of toward the ground. Easy way to save money is to get outdoor lights that shine their light toward the ground.
For more information check out the International Dark Sky Association website.
This. There are some communities in dark sky locations (NM and AZ come to mind) that are specifically set up for rich retired people who are seriously into astronomy. Their outside lighting is all directed at the ground, and I believe some even restrict the hours of outdoor lighting. The design of the streetlights actually saves electricity costs in that less wattage is needed to illuminate a given area of the ground.
Yes, I’ve heard that on science shows before.
a Tesla parked outside my house
Did you at least get to do burnouts in it? They DO have impressive torque delivery. There’s no point in pretending it’s not true.
I call it the slot car. There is no question that it’s an impressive car, but the fawning makes me nauseous. Calling it the Greatest Sports Sedan Evah is just absurd when things like the Maserati Quattroporte exist.
Speaking of Maserati, the local import specialist has http://www.prestigeimport.com/2004-Maserati-Spyder/Used-Convertible/GrandRapids-MI/9803385/Details.aspx for sale. I keep eyeballing it even though I know it would hurt my wallet.

It’s nice. I love the way they sound. I know they are a nightmare to service – but it’s only money, right?
I’ve bought a car from this dealership… the owner is a 60-something year old Italian. When I talked reliability with him, he just laughed.
To paraphrase: “You could drive a Camry but why would you want to do that?”
Bingo. That’s a lot of car for 26K.
When the kids are out of the house, I’m gonna up my vehicular stupidity game.
The guy in Zimbabwe was one of Mugabe’s trusted lieutenants. He probably always had the idea he would take over when Mugabe kicked the bucket, but just got impatient. So, good luck to Zimbabwe. Meet the new guy – same as the old guy.
We won’t live to see the day when governments don’t exist to line the pockets of those who are connected to the people at the top of the pyramid.
Mugabe kicked him out in favor of his (much younger) wife. I think the rest of the ruling elite realized that loyalty and years of service meant nothing. So they revolted.
North Korea is an ecological paradise, according to leading scientists.
Only way to fix this problem is that poor people must stay poor and backwater. Solution: double down on more leftism!
In other words – “Water is wet, news at 11”.
Well considering that most of the watermelons would only be satisfied by going back to the Stone Age, the Norks really are a paradise by that standard.
Communism is about share misery for the masses…
I’m pretty sure there’s essentially no wildlife in N. Korea because they eat everything they can get their hands on (and the military shoots most predators) – could be wrong I guess, but I doubt it.
regarding light pollution, it messes with astronomy in my case.
This is a legitimate complaint. Virtually everybody who talks about “light pollution” around here means, “Look at all those goddam houses with people living in them, where it used to be pitch dark ranch land. Change is bad. It makes me weep.”
*contemplates the plusses and minuses of shooting out the offending lights, give up due to the fact that they don’t make enough ammo to do it. Plus lazy.
I hate light pollution, but not because of other people’s houses blighting the landscape. The inability to see starscapes anywhere but the most remote regions (in the USA at least) sucks, and most likely contributes to our increasingly inward thinking/lack of a sense of adventure.
Plus, a lot of money is wasted beaming photons into space when they should be aimed at the ground where people can actually make use of them.
Calling it the Greatest Sports Sedan Evah is just absurd when things like the Maserati Quattroporte exist.
The BMW M5 mk1 is a high bar to clear.
a heart-warming story
Despite being spit on, students’ ‘Capitalism vs. Socialism’ Thanksgiving display prompts insight, interest
https://www.thecollegefix.com/post/39262/

Sure, the Portland State University senior and his campus group’s pro-capitalism Thanksgiving display was spit on Tuesday by an angry peer apparently furious that socialism was being critiqued, but other than that it was a successful venture, he said.
“Yes, that was one of the negative encounters,” Mentrum told The College Fix in a message. “We were having an argument over capitalism and the guy was fervently for socialism, so when I pointed out his inconsistencies and the flaws in his argument, he got angry and spit on our display, most of which got on to some of our pamphlets and little bit on me. I figured that it was a good sign that we were doing the right thing.”
Indeed the display, a “Capitalism vs. Socialism” Thanksgiving exhibit with a feast for the capitalist on one table and a famine at the socialist’s table, served as a powerful visual at the notoriously liberal campus.
The capitalist’s table included a pile of “gold,” a large turkey, a cornucopia of fruit, informational pamphlets declaring “live free!,” “5 Reasons Big Government Is The Real War On Women” and more. The socialist’s table offered a smattering of plastic spiders, one lonely pear, and a skeleton.

“he got angry and spit on our display”
The most mature argument he could muster.
A real master-debator (pun intended).
To be more accurate the socialist table should have been covered in a heaping pile of skeletons.
With few exceptions, growth in nighttime light was observed throughout South America, Africa and Asia.
But increased access to modern infrastructure like round-the-clock electricity is bad. Got it.
I just had my version of the trip from hell.
We were hustling up to visit the family for Thanksgiving by driving all night. About 3 hours Short of my destination in the middle of Nowhereville South Carolina, the transmission on my Nissan Quest just gave out. And it had to give out right at an overpass where there was almost no shoulder on the side of the road.
So there we were at 3 a.m. with Trucks whizzing by at 80 miles an hour and three kids in the car. It took the tow Truck 2 hours to get there. We were still waiting for the police to arrive when we left with the tow truck. We ended up spending most of the night and the rest of the day camped out on the side of the road looking like a bunch of homeless people. There was another family with all of their luggage piled up outside of a Waffle House. They had gotten in an accident in their car was totaled. They were still trying to figure out how in the world they were going to get out of there.
So that was fun….
There were no vehicles available to rent that can handle the five of us and our luggage, but Enterprise Rent-A-Car ended up giving us a 15 passenger van for the price of a small SUV. So I’m giving a major shout out to them. Even though I am not exactly enjoying holiday traffic in a truck the size of a small tractor trailer.
We are still waiting to find out when they can get the parts to fix the car. A couple of places quoted us two to three weeks to get the repair done. Yikes! When I find out the results of the repairs, I will have another shout out. (Hopefully)
Anyway, we made it in time for Thanksgiving with the family. It was only an 11 hour delay. And it will probably only cost a month’s pay. Maybe two.
Man that sucks. Hopefully that’s your only bad luck for a while.
I feel for you, at least everyone’s O.K.
Sucks now, but you’ll have a story and you made it on time. Remember, Dell Griffith had no real family to go home to at the end. You got yours. Cheers.
Sorry cyto, that sucks. Do some research on the CVT in that vehicle. Nissan extended the powertrain warranty on some vehicles because of widespread problems. After escalating the issue with Nissan North America, a friend got her Altima repaired gratis.
Good luck!
Ouch, I feel for you. Been there.
Yikes

Glad everybody made it in one piece.
Bitcoin is going nuts. Guess I missed out on that boom and not going to jump in now.
Too unpredictable.
Been watching it for years, just never pulled the trigger. Oh well.
The shit show continues.

Reports say it was a Sufi Mosque – meaning they probably got blown up because they were “not real Muslums” to the bombers.

Elections have consequences.
I wonder if Barry is self-aware enough to regret uttering those words.
Dontcha know that when he said it he meant well and was telling the assholes that he was going to make the world better despite them, and when the enemy says it, it means these shitbags are going to fuck people over.
These proggies must be retarded. Every guy they hate is Hitler, the dumbest asshole ever and played by every bad element out there, a completely useless shitwad incapable of doing anything right even with instructions a 5 yr. old can follow, then suddenly as they do things like this, an evil genius able to play 7D chess… And they go through these phases never even noticing their cognitive dissonance.
Weren’t they just complaining that the administration was so incompetent it couldn’t fill all the necessary vacancies?
Ah never change, WaPo.
One of the WaPo’s criticisms of the nominees is that not all of them have the ABA seal of approval.
I don’t think they realize that, to many people, that’s a good thing. Oh noes, the unelected cabal of trial lawyers didn’t vet this judicial nominee, what is the world coming to?!?
Other criticisms include: they’re young (boo-hoo!) and they’re conservative (yes? duh? Obama only nominated moderates when he had to).
Curse your capitalist medical science making people we disagree with live longer!

DRUMPF PAKING KORTS!
Yeah, Linda Greenhouse has one up at NYT. The vast right wing conspiracy of the week is to add more federal judges. Maybe they’ll even confirm some for the open slots which current ly exist.
Oh, no! That guy who won the election- he gets to nominate judges. Curse you, 22nd Amendment!
This reply was almost threaded.
Well done.
Glibs – Have any of you had a cranberry sauce and peanut butter sandwiches, or are you living a hollow and valueless life?
False.
With or without turkey?
On the peanut butter sandwich? No turkey. I still have left over sandwiches with turkey and cranberry sauce. I don’t, like hate America or anything.
One of the most sublime and delicious of all the groundnut/sweetish spread combinations. Fun fact – It’s even more betterer with bacon added.
Let the unpersoning commence
Wrestling with what to do with the product of tainted executives, artists or news figures is not that far from the eternal issue of how (or even whether) to separate our views of art from our views of the artists. Wagner was blatantly anti-Semitic. Alfred Hitchcock abused actresses who worked for him, so openly that you can see his dysfunctional psychosexual power dynamics right onscreen. Roman Polanski was convicted of having sex with a 13-year-old, but does that mean “Rosemary’s Baby” should have been pulled from circulation?
Those were generally seen as rare cases that (perhaps) could be overlooked because of the men’s particular genius, or because times were different then. What has changed now is the unveiling of evidence that sexually predatory behavior is pervasive and that it has flourished in hierarchical, male-dominated industries that have at best ignored, and at worst enabled, such behavior by powerful and once-untouchable men.
In the current period of reckoning, some are arguing that a wholesale expunging or erasure of work by sexual harassers is a small price to pay if it results in a thorough rethinking in creative industries, where the use of sex and power are particularly ill-defined and open to abuse.
We must expunge these monsters from history. Burn their books. Burn their films. Tear them down and grind them into dust.
Unpersoning:
To crush your enemies. See them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their women.
Well shit, now we have to unperson ourselves. /Prog
