Yusef Presents – ThewiZARDofOZ – A movie review

I have known of the movie Zardoz since I was a kid but never watched it until last night, and I must say, “Huh?” Exterminators get guns from a giant head, who haphazardly tosses shotguns and shells at anyone who can pick them up. What about infiltrating Brutals? Zed proceeds to climb into the head while no one was watching, (maybe Arthur, who knows?) and shoots Arthur in the arm, causing his death, which can’t be because he’s an Eternal.

Zed lands in the scenery for the Prisoner and finds the only person (Mae) (Ginger yum) with no soul to make contact with, gets caught up in the Tabernacle Bullshit, and is forced to leave, OK. (I’m a Ginger, my Wife is a Ginger, and yes, we have no souls.)

And where are the boobies? Is that what the British have to put up with? No wonder we created a new country, full of boobies!

Attacked by people who can’t fight their way INTO a plastic bag? Then run when Zed breaks out of a PLASTIC BAG?…. OK.  If you break the law you are aged, so where did the 300 hundred-year-old tuxedos and dresses come from? Leaving ’em in storage for later? What later? Zed apparently breaks the Tabernacle at just the moment The Exterminators come in to clean house? And of course, Consuela and Sean make a baby and grow old. It’s amazing how good Sean Connery looks compared to the movie version of him aging.

What the Hell did I watch? I love early 70’s movies: washed-out scenes, horrible dialogue, and a certain Hippie-je ne sais quoi, FWIW, but this was a complete 70’s mess. The storyline is typical for the time, which is none! Maybe I should torture myself and watch it again and again until my Brutal thoughts are cleansed, but no.

I suggest the Charleton Heston dark series which includes: Planet of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes (World Ender), Soylent Green, The Omega Man.

These are all early 70’s movies. Some period, some not, but a good glimpse of Sci Fi from the era.

ZARDOZ 3.0/5

    Seen any good movies?

    1. Rhywun

Yup. I’ve been doing a-Hitch-a-night. So far, Rope, Strangers on a Train, Rear Window.

      1. Which AH movie is considered the “best” one?

        1. Number.6

North By North-West is consistently rated highly, as is Dial “M” for Murder and Strangers on A Train, but really, he made no stinkers I can remember, although The Birds isn’t one that I’d recommend.

          1. Hitchcock liked the “wrongfully accused man goes on a road trip” plot, doesn’t he?

          2. NBNW, 39 Steps, Sabateur…

          3. Number.6

Fun Fact. Hitchcock and Boorman went to the same school, but not at the same time.

His best-known films pretty much fall into a very small number of movie archetypes, but early in his career, he had a broader base and directed comedy, documentary and wartime propaganda, but they really don’t figure much in what most people would call Hitchcock canon.

The later years, post –Birds was very mixed. A spent force, one might say.

          4. I like “Rich and Strange” and “Number Seventeen”.

          5. Rhywun

Toss in an “icy blonde” and mix.

          6. You haven’t seen “Under Capricorn”, then.

          7. Number.6

I’ll grant you that – it hardly qualifies as anything other than unremarkable. Not sure I’d *quite* put it in ‘stinker’ territory.

          8. MikeS

To Catch A Thief is also excellent. Cary Grant and Grace Kelly make a great pair.

A good one for an extra dose of Hitch’s dark humor is The Trouble With Harry. This is Shirley MacLaine’s first film role. Her son is played by Jerry Mathers.

          9. And Edmund Gwenn, who had previously played a hired killer in “Foreign Correspondent”.

          10. robc

            But does she speak jive?

          11. Tundra

To Catch A Thief is one of my favorite movies. 10/10

          12. MikeS

Here is one of the best things about that movie

          13. Tundra

Honestly, has there ever been a movie star more beautiful than her?

            (the answer is hell no!)

    2. Anne of the Thousand Days was beautiful to watch, and Geneviève Bujold was hot.

The Arrangement was a horrendous mess, with the only thing worth watching being Kirk Douglas’ porn-stache.

    3. Bob Boberson

I watched both “Hell or High Water” and “Wind River” this week. Great new-westerns that IMO are rare gems in current hot mess of rehashes and super-sequels

      1. KSuellington

Lifeboat is also another great Hitchcock film that doesn’t get quite the recognition.

        1. CPRM

Life Boat and Rope are amazing feats, keeping the story visually interesting without any change in location.

          1. MikeS

Rope is a masterpiece. It’s in my top 5 Hitchcock films for sure. The filming is brilliant, and the casting is superb as well.

It’s been a loooong time since I’ve seen Lifeboat. I’ll have to get the DVR hooked up. I like Rhywun’s Hitch-a-night idea.

          2. KSuellington

Agreed. I saw Rope for the first time this past year and loved it. Also, don’t forget about Albert Hitchcock Presents. I believe it is on Netflix. What a great series that was.

          3. Nephilium

Alfred Hitchcock Presents was on Netflix, but it got yanked. Looks like the only classic anthology show still on Netflix is Twilight Zone, but Black Mirror is a very solid modern one with a leaning towards science fiction.

          4. KSuellington

Damn autocorrect. I didn’t even catch that until I checked the comments now. I will have to check out Black Mirror.

          5. Nephilium

I was trying to be subtle on the correction, and link to a shirt that has gotten a lot of commentary.

For Black Mirror, the first episode is probably the weakest one, feel free to skip it and come back to it later.

      2. dbleagle

“HoHW” is a great movie. Every key role is played well and the “What don’t you want?” scene is fantastic. They caught the mood of rural TX post 2008 crash very well.

“Wind River” is okay as well. It was nice to see parts were actually filmed in and around the Wind River portion of Wyoming and the towns of Lander, Pinedale etc.

        1. Bob Boberson

Rare movies, not perfect but really enjoyable. Like you said they capture the tone and spirit of the modern west and steers clear of “deplorable” caricatures and overt political BS….they are honestly the only recent movies that didn’t just make me say “meh”

        1. Rhywun

My favorite early 70s movie is both serious and seriously funny in places.

          1. BakedPenguin

Taking of Pelham 123? Great movie. I saw it not too long ago – and noted the serious / funny mix. Ie made it seem a lot more modern.

Hmm. The only movie I have seen lately was Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Don’t bother. The most remarkable thing about that movie is that it requires the greatest amount of suspension of disbelief of any movie ever made.

    1. juris imprudent

We went out to a movie a couple of weeks back – the new BladeRunner. Mostly just wait for them to hit PPV or HBO. Although I suppose I will go see the next Star Wars and hope they didn’t fuck it up hopelessly (and in that I expect to be disappointed).

      1. F. Stupidity Jr.

Going forward, any movie bearing the Star Wars moniker won’t be so much “bad” as “meh”. The Force Awakens and Rogue One made a fuckton of cash by tweaking a few well-worn SW ideas; why would Disney change anything?

The tepid tapwater that was the Prequel Trilogy took more chances than the latest SW movies.

        1. John Titor

The only ones who have the potential to fall apart and lose revenue are the spinoffs. Some people think the Han Solo standalone is going to shit the bed.

Personally I think the Star Wars crash will happen rapidly after a couple years, people will just get sick of it, like they almost started to do with Marvel movies until they started being more risky and different.

Having ‘white nuclear family’ promotes white supremacy, says New York professor, report says

Well no shit. Family units exist because they make their members more prosperous (unless we’re talking about a dysfunctional or abusive family). A family provides you with connections to career opportunities, and families will help one of their members who has fallen on hard times. And I’m not going to excoriate single parents – my own parents divorced when I was 6 and they were excellent – but it’s better for a child to have two loving, caring parents rather than one loving, caring parent.

A lot of people – mostly Lefties – think that family values are just silly rules made up by stodgy old religious guys to ruin everyone’s fun… But they’re not. They exist because when families stick together and help each other out, the members of that family have more prosperous, fulfilling lives.

Gosh, you might even draw the conclusion that it’s not a good idea to let feminism and the family court system dismantle the family unit.

      1. Yusef drives a Kia

        Excellent, well said

          Exactly this.

      3. RBS

“the family court system dismantle the family unit.”

Bullshit. Unless it’s different where you live, someone has to ask the Court to intervene. There is a reason the caption is Smith vs. Smith. It’s litigation and the parties have every opportunity to present their case in whatever manner they think best, if they fuck that up it is not the Court’s fault. I deal with with people every week that “got screwed by the family court” and every time their getting screwed was the result of either not having a competent attorney, not listening to their attorney or not having an attorney at all because their best friend’s uncle said he could juat do it himself.

        1. Akira

Perhaps I should have said “divorce courts”… I just consider them part of the family court system.

My issue with divorce courts is that they basically turn divorce into a payday for women (and some men, in all fairness). Many states allow lifetime alimony regardless of changes in the recipient’s financial state… So a woman could divorce her husband, get alimony, then move in with a billionaire boyfriend and still get those checks from him. It wouldn’t matter if he was living in his vehicle and quite literally unable to pay; prosecutors are always hard-nosed on matters related to alimony.

These courts provide a strong financial incentive for women to ditch their marriages instead of trying to work things out… Perhaps there are women who get married for the sole purpose of divorcing and collecting some free money for a few years.

        1. I mention “Mary Deare” more because of Hitchcock’s getting out of it; it’s good but not quite great. “The Bride Wore Black” is very accessible Truffaut for folks who don’t like the New Wave stuff. (“Day for Night” is even better in that regard.)

          1. MikeS

Oh Yeah, I’m going to do a treadmill test Tomorrow morning, My Heart has been hurting for the last 4 months, everything looks O.K. but every now and again, I get these intense electric shocks,
Like the one that prompted this post. It took 4 Months to get to the TM test, I hope I make it.
    /Too much stress

    1. OneOut

Good luck and I hope everything turns out well .

A pain in the heart must be very scary indeed.

What did your everyday doctor say while you had heart pains for 4 months ?

      1. Yusef drives a Kia

Stress, and it seems to work well enough, but it’s scary, I’m in good shape, athletic job etc. so I’m gonna find out I guess

        1. hayeksplosives

Good luck with the tests. Hope it turns out ok for you.

I had stress-induced PVCs (premature ventricular contractions) that can be a little freaky, especially if they come back to back, but are actually benign. For me, they went away when I dramatically cut out caffeine. I have coffee once a week or so and some diet soda with caffeine no problem, but if I have even 2 cups of coffee, they come back.

Getting answers that echocardiograms and treadmill and tilt is OK should at least lessen the stress of wondering why your heart flips out now and then.

  24. I still want a decent movie based off classic Dungeons & Dragons:

A band of we’re-do-wells get homd of a map to legendary treasure, and they explore and plunder an ancient dungeon. Some of them die in weird and horrifying (and humorous) ways, one of them is revealed to be a traitor, they are beaten by the dungeon’s inhabitants on their initial try, but, after a Rocky-style training/preparation montage, they re-enter the dungeon and ruthlessly clear it out. They are horrified at their own success, but do get the treasure, most of which is promptly confiscated by the town officials/lost in,some mundane way. At the end of the story, they are pretty much at the same place–socially and financially–as they were at the beginning, except they have a shared experience that binds them together.

The AP found few traces of the bureau’s inquiry as it launched its own investigation two months ago.

In October, two AP journalists visited THCServers.com , a brightly lit, family-run internet company on the former grounds of a communist-era chicken farm outside the Romanian city of Craiova. That’s where someone registered DCLeaks.com, the first of three websites to publish caches of emails belonging to Democrats and other U.S. officials in mid-2016.

DCLeaks was clearly linked to Fancy Bear. Previous AP reporting found that all but one of the site’s victims had been targeted by the hacking group before their emails were dumped online.

At this point, I wonder how much different this would be than the Russians claiming 4Chan operations are linked to Washington or the CIA/NSA. The AP seems to be going with the FBI being negligent angle, but this right here:

Questions over the FBI’s handling of Fancy Bear’s broad hacking sweep date to March 2016, when agents arrived unannounced at Hillary Clinton’s headquarters in Brooklyn to warn her campaign about a surge of rogue, password-stealing emails.

The agents offered little more than generic security tips the campaign had already put into practice and refused to say who they thought was behind the attempted intrusions, according to a person who was there and spoke on condition of anonymity because the conversation was meant to be confidential.

Contradicts previous accounts in which the DNC and Clinton campaign basically told the FBI to pound sand because they were going to investigate themselves rather than turn over their servers. And the DNC failed to get back to the FBI for weeks after initially being warned.

    1. Brochettaward

It all really seems to suggest to me that whatever was happening, it just wasn’t viewed as some large scale operation that would tip an election. And no one really cared all that much until Trump actually won. Then it was all hands on deck to contrive a case that Russia not only pulled off a grand conspiracy, but did it with the open objective to help Trump. Any contradictory evidence would be ignored. Gaps in knowledge and evidence would be swept under the rug.

      1. Yusef drives a Kia

You really want to shut up some stupid fuck going on about the hacked e-mails. Ask them what was in those e-mails that was so damning that it caused people to avoid voting for Hillary. You can hear a pin drop as the little gears strip inside the brain trying to work around that.

  28. Akira

I don’t use this label myself, but people often describe me as someone who was “born in the wrong time period”. Almost everything I’m interested in – music, literature, movies, clothing, etc. – is from the 1890s – 1940s time period.

As such, I like old gangster movies… My favorites so far have been:

    – Angels With Dirty Faces: Fun fact… This title was spoofed in Home Alone as “Angels With Filthy Souls”, the old mob movie that Kevin plays at high volume to scare away the robbers.

    – Scarface: The earlier movie that the Al Pacino version was based on… It has mostly the same plot, but it’s about an Italian bootlegger instead of a Cuban coke dealer.

    – Little Caesar

    – I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang: Not a very creative title, but a good movie.

Jimmy Cagney going off on the Dead End Kids, the future Bowery Boys. Dead End is a pretty good movie; another movie they did around the same time period, They Made Me a Criminal, is also really good. And has the amusing casting of Claude Rains as a Brooklyn police detective.

I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang:

Paul Muni gets one of the great closing lines. Highly recommended, and based on a true story.

I’ll admit that I don’t watch a lot of the movies, mostly because I’ve already seen most of them and don’t have much room on my DVR, but the movies are good.

It’s a bit late for a 70’s movie (released April 1981), but The Last Chase has one of the best Roads v. Public Transportation rants:

Hawkins: What do you see there, Captain?
Captain J.G. Williams: I see a car and two people. Wow! Look at that… son of a bitch!
Hawkins: Much more than a car and two men.
Captain J.G. Williams: Well, that’s all I can see.
Hawkins: This man’s dangerous. This little joyride he’s on is undermining the entire balance of this country.
Captain J.G. Williams: Sir, this is just one car… I mean, a little exhaust isn’t going to upset the whole balance of the universe.
Hawkins: You are missing the metaphor.
    Captain J.G. Williams: There’s a meta-who?
Hawkins: I am talking about our entire way of life, Captain. We live in a society that has the greatest tranquillity ever created by man. Furthermore, this society is more protected than any other in history. And do you know why?
    Captain J.G. Williams: Well, I figured…
Hawkins: Because of the system. The system of our existence which has been worked out so perfectly. In fact, it is that system which dispelled the desperate quest for the impurities contained in mobility. The mobility which had driven this nation like rats, scurrying in every direction that led us nowhere. Nowhere! Now, we have removed that addiction and brought order and tranquillity… the two most fragile flowers in any civilisation. And this man, this fool, is defecating on those flowers! Staining the natural hygiene of our society and tampering with the world’s most perfectly balanced system.
Captain J.G. Williams: Sir… what do you want me to do about it?

What he is told to do about it, is blow him up with a jet fighter.

    http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/11/26/south-korea-taunts-north-korea-over-defecting-soldier-by-broadcasting-news-through-loudspeakers-report-says.html

South Korea is making sure North Korea doesn’t forget about the regime’s soldier who defected to the South in a daring escape earlier this month — by blasting updates about the defector’s health through its military’s loudspeakers at the Demilitarized Zone, a report said on Sunday.

South Korean troops broadcasted an update on Sunday about the North Korean soldier’s “nutritive conditions,” taking a hit at the Hermit Kingdom’s alleged health issues, Yonhap News Agency reported. The broadcasts are reportedly so loud that people within 12.4 miles from the DMZ are able to hear it.

“The nutritive conditions of the North Korean soldier who recently defected through the Panmunjom were unveiled,” an official told Yonhap News Agency.

Consistent updates have been broadcast through South Korean military’s loudspeakers since the soldier, identified by his surname, Oh, was shot at least five times while dashing across the Joint Security Area — a strip of land at the DMZ where North and South Korean forces stand face-to-face — on Nov. 13. The broadcast operation is part of an ongoing psychological warfare between the North and the South. The gigantic loudspeakers were switched back on in January 2016 after North Korea’s fourth nuclear test.

    From the CNN article

    ***
Hennessy, a 32-year-old transgender male, recently participated in a workshop held by SheKnows Media, a leading women’s lifestyle company.
“What gender do you think I am?” Hennessy asked 11 sixth-graders in New York City who are members of SheKnows’ unique Hatch program, which focuses on teaching digital literacy and citizenship to the next generation. The program is in its fourth year.

Hennessy hopes the new video of the Hatch workshop, released Thursday, will be seen by children and parents across the country and lead to more understanding about people like himself who are born with reproductive organs that do not match their gender identity.
“If you don’t treat it like a gross, icky, weird, evil thing, they don’t treat it like a gross, icky, weird, evil thing,” Hennessy said in an interview. When kids as young as 4 or 5 years old use female pronouns when they meet him, he tells them, “Oh, no, I’m a boy,” at which point they often ask, “What, you’re a boy?”
He then explains to them what being transgender is. “And boom, they get it right away,” he said.
Maverick, 12, knew what transgender was before taking part in the Hatch workshop. His mom is a sexuality educator who has been talking to him about sexuality and gender since birth. But he had never met anyone who was transgender until Hennessy.
