Q. Adopted girl: My good friend and her husband recently adopted a little girl from a Russian orphanage. The girl was badly in need of medical care and surgery, which my friend provided for her. Q. Making amends after suicide attempt: About two months ago, after 12 years of mental illness, I attempted to take my own life. Thankfully, it didn’t work. I spent a month in an inpatient unit, and successfully completed an outpatient program.

The person asking about the Russian girl seems like an idiot. Firstly, it’s not his or her kid. People should raise their own damned children and not worry about how other people are raising theirs. Secondly, there’s a pretty good reason to forbid the girl from speaking Russian. Having to speak a language is a good way to learn to speak it.
I hate to agree with you, but yeah, full immersion in the language of your new home and garnering native-level fluency is a long-term good for the kid.
I could not disagree more. Kids do not need total immersion to learn a language and they pick up new language skills surprisingly quickly. There are some code switching errors early on when the kid isn’t completely sure which language is appropriate in which contexts but that sorts itself out. If these people want to connect with their kid they should encourage her to speak English as much as possible but they should also endeavor to learn Russian themselves.
That would defeat the purpose of linguistic retraining.

I would suggest that the language thing is likely not nearly as draconian as the letter writer suggests. They may very well correct the girl for speaking Russian in front of people who don’t because it’s rude, without prohibiting her from ever uttering a word. But that wouldn’t make a very appealing letter for the buttinsky.

I speak 7 and I do them with the proper accent. One of them, spanish, has some 30 different dialects depending on country of origin. Of course, I learned these by going to school there and having to pick it up, because my dad felt going to the school the other American kids went to was too easy.

Western thought went through a schism hundreds of years ago in the Enlightenment, where we managed to completely separate temporal, political issues, from Church/religion, and put them in entirely different boxes. I think few people can even properly comprehend the sort of world-view which preceded that ‘breakup’, where God was tied up in every possible dimension of public and private life. Abstractly, maybe; but not intuitively.
Islam never had that moment, and it remains a jointly ‘political/religious’ entity. Its neither one nor the other – its both and they’re inseparable, at least from the perspective of the earnest adherent. Which is why i think people often misunderstand the polling data on stuff like “support for sharia law”. Its not that every muslim believes that homosexuals should be literally thrown from rooftops or that the literal word of the koran (or hadiths, or whatever) functions as a suitable replacement for “all law” – its that they often see the world in this fragmented state where politics and religion are bifurcated, and from their POV its essentially an unnatural state of affairs. We just don’t get it because we simply take it for granted that the post-enlightenment world is “the way it is”, and that’s that. They beg to differ.
I don’t know what sort of political resolution would satisfy the salafists; probably nothing short of the overthrow of the Saudi regime and institution of a caliphate over at least the arab-islamic world.
