Jeez, talk about a light sports night. I’m sure that has a few of you super-stoked. But I’ll cover it anyway: Everton finally won a Europa League match, although its too little-too late for Big Sam’s boys (even though he wasn’t at the match). They’re 3-0 since he was hired. That’ll be 3-1 after the Liverpool derby this Sunday. Arsenhole also won in the JV competition. In cricket, the English media are all but giving up on the Ashes series after their guys fell into s 2-0 hole to the Aussies. And in basketball, Purdue was the only ranked team in action, and they won handily.
Nine games on the ice last night, even though everybody’s mind seems to be on the Olympics. The Bruins mauled the Coyotes. The Penguins skated past the Islanders. The Flames burned Les Canadiens in OT. The Lightning struck the Avalanche. The Panthers grounded the Jets. The Blues made the Stars weep. The Flyers soared past the Canucks. The Kings trumped the Senators. And the Sharks swam past the Hurricanes. (I had no more quips in me, so thank God there wasn’t a tenth game.)
OK, that’s it for sports. Here come…the links!
Arizona Republican legislator Trent Franks the latest to resign in sexual harassment scandal. This one is weird, and if there’s no more to the story than what’s being reported, I’m not sure this is harassment of a sexual nature. Weird, sure. But sexual? Not really.
Brexit talks, which were looking tenuous at best, appear to have had a breakthrough and are looking like they might be back on track. I still don’t see what the problem is. Set up a border between Ireland and Northern Ireland and call it a day. It worked for a century just fine
Cold-blooded murderer walks free. It’s good to be one of the king’s men. (TW: graphic stuff. I’m serious, this is some really fucked up shit and unless you want to get a raging urge to go on a rampage, you may not want to watch.)
Apparently the Chicago Public Schools are being run by a real shitbird. That would explain why Rahm said he fully supported him yesterday.
If you run the FBI, IRS, DOJ, work for the feds or apparently run the Chicago Public Schools, you can lie under oath with impunity. If you do it in traffic court in Atlanta, you will go to jail.
Bernie Sanders’s wife, who is looking more and more like a younger version of Mrs Fratelli from The Goonies every day, is still under federal investigation and the feds are interviewing witnesses. I wonder why they never mention that when he gets on the air over at MSNBC or CNN.
And I finish with a little bit of good news.
Have a great day and a better weekend, friends!
Good song selection. Yusef is gonna’ like those guitars.
Also, first!
Also, fried chicken.
The early bird gets evacuated from LA first.
I know where you guys live is ok, but are the in-laws and all your friends out there ok?
Everyone in my clan is safe. Thanks.

I’m way late, but I got a mention in the first post. YAY for me!
Hey guys. Thanks for all the advice you guys gave me about my colitis mishap. I’ll try to be brief about everything.
I went into the ER at 345am. I got a bed and some prelim meds but I ended up there for 12 hours before I got my bed. In a room with 7 grizzled old men.
Turns out the diagnosis was correct but they just don’t think it’s as big of a deal. They didn’t see much necrosis if any and if there’s a hole in my colon that it is too small to need to be operated on. I had some really bad pain on Thursday but really almost all it for daily living is fine right now. But I’m gonna follow their recommendation.
I have a sub for work Monday and Wed and frankly…I’d like to take those days off. I did get sick from the old fucks coughing in here last night. Worst. Sleep. Ever.
Well, I am a very anxious person and very hypochondriacal. So I’m glad that it’s nothing too serious but it will help me re-evaluate and change how I live. Right now I’m on some drip pain meds, cough syrup, and I have a big crush on my nurse. She made a mistake and was very cute and bashful about it. I overheard her in Korean say that I look like Harry Potter. So obviously it’s time to propose.
Thanks again, all. I should be out of here in a day or two at the most. Been lurking the whole time.
So you go in with colitis and leave with yellow fever?
I heartily approve.

Got it on the second reading. Very good.
You saying he did the old geezers?

Meh. Pre-existing condition.

For re-evaluating how you live (but mostly eat).
Happy Reading.
Glad it’s nothing serious
Harry Potter’s relationship with Cho Chang was a mistake. Are you sure you want to repeat it?
There, that’s more accurate.
^This guy gets it.
I can’t stand Harry Potter. He was the worst wizard. Couldn’t do anything right. Friends or teachers always saving him. He was a waste. I’ve gleaned this information from watching parts of the movies with my kids.
Plus he’s a blatant rip-off of Tim Hunter from Neil Gaimain’s “The Books of Magic.”
Well he was mentally abused by his aunt and uncle for the first 12 years of his life and forced to live in a room under the stairs. Plus some bald guy is always trying to kill him.
He should have outsourced to A different Bald guy.
Snape, tho.
Also, for me, it’s not about Harry. I don’t especially like Harry, but have been impressed with the world Rowling has been able to create — it’s pretty brilliant when you think about it.
UCS is still bitter about Rowling blocking him on Twitter.
I don’t have a twitter account.
Cho Chang reminds me of my junior year crush/fling with Ella Pallamarchuk. What a crazy/hot Ukrainian. Mmmm…meeeeemoriiiieees.

Thiccness.
I rather enjoy that her tits are roughly the same size as her head.
Soon, they’ll be in the same place as her knees.
Call me!
Thanks for the memory
Of sentimental verse
Nothing in my purse
And chuckles
When the preacher said
For better or for worse
How lovely it was
Thanks for the memory
Of Schubert’s Serenade
Little things of jade
And traffic jams
And anagrams
And bills we never paid
How lovely it was
We who could laugh over big things
Were parted by only a slight thing
I wonder if we did the right thing
Oh, well, that’s life, I guess
I love your dress
Thanks for the memory
Of faults that you forgave
Of rainbows on a wave
And stockings in the basin
When a fellow needs a shave
Thank you so much
Thanks for the memory
Of tinkling temple bells
Alma mater yells
And Cuban rum
And towels from
The very best hotels
Oh how lovely it was
Thanks for the memory
Of cushions on the floor
Hash with…
We said goodbye with a highball
Then I got as high as a steeple
But we were intelligent people
No tears, no fuss
Hooray for us
Strictly entre nous
Darling, how are you?
And how are all
Those little dreams
That never did come true?
Awfully glad I met you
Cheerio and toodle-oo
Thank you
Thank you so much
Good, glad to hear it’s not that serious. I got C diff colitis and it wasn’t painful, just….messy. You should probably lay off the sauce for a while, that can be really hard on the plumbing. Get well soon.
That must’ve been freaky in a Korean Hospital. The first time I had to get a check up here, the nurse led me down the hall and handed me a paper cup. “Blah, Blah, Blah. Kudasai.” No idea what she wanted me to put in that cup so I made a little parfait with everything on it.
Free healthcare, cute Korean nurses, and you get to take a submarine to work? Sounds heavenly.
It’s good that it is not too serious. I hope you heal up quickly.
Hope you are feeling better.
Great news! Heal up quick!
Great to hear! I assume your ears were burning last night; SP and I were talking about you, wondering and worrying that we hadn’t heard anything from you for a few days.
The current Draft Brexit deal is daft. They’d be better with a clean break.
Ok, how do you have a clean break when you have just one land border? And that border has been a sore spot since it’s inception.
A clean break being a nonestablishment of agreements. Etiehr side can set up whatever border controls they feel are needed on their own land along the border. What May is doing is giving away concessions despite the UK being in the stronger negotiating position.
Gotcha. I was curious what you meant. Because it looks like NI is a real sticking point for not only NI and IRL, but for those Scottish dicks who are now bitching because NI might have an open border with the EU that they won’t get to have as well.
Basically, May is trying to satisfy too many factions. She needs to say “we are dissolving our union effective immediately. We will respect EU passport holders and let them freely enter and exit Britain at any time. And any nation that’s a part of GB is free to exit the commonwealth if they want after they compensate her for all infrastructure, government-owned assets and pay a penalty.”
Bomb them all?
Do you know who else wanted to bomb the shit out of Britain?
Guy Fawkes?
The IRA?
Lord Blackthorn?
So let the bombs fall, cause buddy I don’t care.
Kill ’em fucking all man, kill everybody each and everywhere.
He rang me up and said “I’ll meet you at the liquor store,
We’ll drink and drink until we can’t fucking breathe anymore.”
I’m sick to death and I’m drowning in my own fucking tears,
What harm will come if I knock away a few more beers?”

So obviously it’s time to propose.
Be fruitful, and multiply. Glad to hear it’s not something that can’t be dealt with.

No, she was in the courtroom with a bunch of criminals, mostly the judge.
Christ, what an asshole.
She was heard. She lied under oath after the judge warned her and the cop that they better not. He showed the video and tossed her in jail for contempt.
IMO, we need more judges willing to toss people in jail when perjury is proven, both defendants and witnesses (and that definitely includes cops). Who knows, it might catch on and people lying to Congress under oath might eventually get the same treatment.
Who knows, it might catch on and people lying to Congress under oath might eventually get the same treatment.
I know it’s Friday and all, but damn that’s some wishful thinking.
Yeah, she may have had a ‘different interpretation’ of the facts, but throwing a woman in jail for fighting a traffic infraction? Nah, I’ll pass.
He fined her the normal amount for the infraction. He put her in jail for perjury.
And it sounds like he granted her request to be heard. And he repeatedly warned her and the cop that lying under oath will land them in jail. She lied, she went to jail.
I know it seems harsh, but I still think this is a good thing as long as it’s applied consistently.
I agree to the contention that it’s a shame this Judges strict standards are not applied to our overlords.
^^^^^^THIS^^^^^
And this is why I don’t have any faith in the legal system…
It is there to control the uppity plebes and to protect our masters from their own criminal behavior.
She said she made it through before light goes red – she probably believed that – if you are going to criminalize testimony, based on memory, then you have effectively chilled/ended defending yourself in court.
This is a disastrous decision. From my experience as an ASA – he was imposing “the trial tax”….and should be hurled from the bench, forthwith.
But what if the video was compelling and showed her nowhere close to where a reasonable person would conclude they had cleared the intersection? That’s never grounds for a perjury charge?
If the video shows her sitting in the middle of an intersection long enough for crossing traffic to approach her and get in their horns, should she be able to get away with knowingly lying about it?
Take into account that in most places, blocking an intersection is illegal when a person enters an intersection knowing they cannot pass through it due to existing cars causing them to stop inside the lines. It’s not about her beating a light…that’s legal. It’s about her pulling into an intersection she can’t clear and the light going red in her. People like that fuck up traffic flows because when the light changes and cross traffic can’t move, it causes backups.
I’m going on a tangent here, sorry. But if video proves she was knowingly lying, how can this be viewed as bad?
So there’s an intersection near my house where a local highway becomes a main artery and is bisected by another large thoroughfare. Bare in mind, I’m talking about two four-lane (two either way) streets. Most of the time it’s fine, but every weekday from about 4:45 to around 6:00 it clogs with commuters coming home from work. Picture a highway with a 65 MPH speed limit that turns into a street of the same width with a 30 MPH speed limit, with a light at the intersection. The street has several lights at roughly two block intervals and is the only road into a highly inhabited area, which complicates things further. There isn’t a day–shit, there isn’t an hour–when at least someone misjudges the progress of traffic and gets stuck in the intersection. APD could fund itself for the rest of the year if they spent a week ticketing and fining each person who blocked the intersection. It’s one of many examples of our infrastructure not keeping pace with our population growth.
I say that to say this: none of those people would say they blocked the intersection, meaning that they intentionally blocked the intersection. And most of them would probably be telling the truth as they understood it. The distinction would probably be lost on many that whether they meant to or not, they did, and that was the root of the issue. In their minds, they didn’t block the intersection, the people ahead of them did. The cars in front of them caused the situation in their minds; it’s not as if they decided to park in the middle of an intersection and do their makeup, they fully intended to move forward and couldn’t.
I understand that in a trial that’s not the issue, but I don’t think, especially at the traffic court level, that that’s what most people who aren’t judges or lawyers believe is the point of the hearing. While I agree with you that perjury is a serious offense and should be punished, I think that in this case and cases like it you have to take into account that you’re probably not dealing with people who appreciate that it’s not an episode of Judge Judy. Your alternative is to turn traffic court, which I’d suppose is the most common encounter people have with the judicial system outside of jury duty, from a relatively quick, cheap, and painless affair into one that’s as serious as a criminal trial, requiring professional legal representation and all the ensuing costs.
Apologies for the Shultz-like length, and I just noticed that “Bare” ought to be “Bear”. I’m gonna blame it on the hernia.
This is a disastrous decision. From my experience as an ASA – he was imposing “the trial tax”….and should be hurled from the bench, forthwith.
If he did this routinely, I would agree. But it sounds like he granted her a form of a bench trial. And he warned both witnesses that lying would result in contempt. Several times, according to the story. I find it hard to believe he’d toss her in jail unless the video he showed was conclusive enough that a reasonable person wouldn’t believe she knew what had happened and was lying to get out of it.
The trial tax comes after you demand trial “Oh, I will give you a trial!” then the tax is at sentencing. This was criminalizing defense testimony.
Was she shown the video before trial? I imagine she didn’t exactly file a discovery motion, and get a copy before trial.
So now we get a judge who can say “in my opinion, you were lying” and throw people in jail….for a traffic ticket. How about when the cop says he took a radar gun reading on a speeder? “You lied, Miss Defendant, off to jail you go!”
But he didn’t do any of those things. He willingly gave her a trial, as she requested it. He forwarned her and the cop that lying would result in contempt. He let them both testify and then gave both an opportunity to modify True testimony. Then he showed the video that proved she was lying. If she didn’t ask if there was any other evidence available for her to review, then that’s on her. She’s able to have counsel if she wishes. She chose to represent herself.
I’d have to see the video to be 100% sure, but my gut tells me it is compelling and proves beyond a reasonable doubt that she knew she was lying.
I still say this is utterly awful and so ripe for abuse that it needs to be ended, right now.
I respect that. I just think we need to drop the hammer on people that knowingly and willingly lie under oath. It’s the entire foundation of our legal system and needs to be enforced most harshly when it is indisputable that the person is knowingly lying.
Differing in recollection is one thing – if you had a video taped interview where a witness says “I saw the man shoot the victim” and then they change story, and do not allege coercion or the tape is a fraud or such. Easy meat. Punishing an assertion of innocence ends criminal and civil defense in our court system.
But does it, at some point, cease being an assertion of innocence and become an obvious lie? Like when there is compelling video evidence?
So do you think the cop had already had a chance to review the tape before he told the judge he’d stand behind his testimony?
Why didn’t the judge show the video at the very beginning of the trial and then ask each of them to give their slant on what the video showed?
I think the key here is how egregious the video was. Did it show that she was way guilty and this lady was obviously lying? Or was it like a NFL replay where it was vague but you were going with the original call?
Even if she was blatantly committing perjury, for a traffic offense, why not just give her another fine? Locking her up seems gratuitous.
Seems like more was going on here than the reporter is telling.
Exactly. Justices rarely comes about when facts are held back from a defendant. In fact, justice requires the defendant to know all the facts against them as soon as the prosecutor does.
But the prosecutor wasn’t the prosecutor in this case. The judge was the prosecutor in this case. He withheld information from the defendant in order to trip her up. There is no justification for it.
Leap, that’s on point- there’s an obligation to share the evidence in advance with the defendant. The judge, acting as a prosecutor here, has egregiously violated that duty.
While I agree lying under oath is wrong, you should know that it will never catch on. They already have so many ethics exemptions carved out for themselves.
And if that isn’t enough they will provide professional courtesy to each other by looking the other way, while coming down hard on the uppity plebes.
She claims she is not guilt. Judge finds her guilty. Her plea of not guilty is thereby not true, a lie if you will, therefore perjury. See, if you plea not guilty and are found guilty, you also are guilty of perjury. All perfectly rational.
Apparently the Chicago Public Schools are being run by a real shitbird. That would explain why Rahm said he fully supported him yesterday.
Ethics are for little people.
And double standards for the overlords?
Regards the DailyMail link about that cop in Arizona –
I didn’t even watch the video, but seeing that gentleman’s photo with his daughters was enough. Fuck I better not see any cops today, god damnit. Rage engaged.
I can only hope he had a brother or father who ambushes that cop, makes him crawl around before executing him. Maybe the son will have to avenge his father.
Can we safely deduce that the crawling around was intended to create a movement that the cop could use to justify killing the guy?
“I’ll shoot you if you put your hands down. Now crawl towards me…. bang”
Don’t watch the video. Officer Skippy needs two in the dome. It’s an absolute travesty that he’s walking free, and I hope someone kills him. Metaphorically, of course.
Re: the Arizona sexual harassment. Isn’t that the logical next step. They went from sexual assault to harassment to rejected advances, so now that they are through there they have to expand on what sexual means.
Did he ask the female staffers to be a surrogate? That would be pretty weird.
Did he say he wanted to do the fertilization procedure the “old fashioned way”? That would be sexual.
Surrogacy does not inherently involve contributing an egg. Often an embyro is implanted in the surrogate.
“I identify as a fish. If you are our surrogate, you better be into broadcast spawning”
Yeah, it sounds awkward but there are so few details we may as well assume he meant the old fashioned way.
Poke your eye out…

melodramatic shrieking
“What shall it profit a man,” Jesus asked, “if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul?” The current Republican Party seems to not understand that question. Donald Trump seems to have made gaining the world at the cost of his soul his entire life’s motto.
It’s amazing that there haven’t been more Republicans like Mitt Romney who have said: “Enough is enough! I can go no further!”
The reason, I guess, is that the rot that has brought us to the brink of Senator Roy Moore began long ago. Starting with Sarah Palin and the spread of Fox News, the G.O.P. traded an ethos of excellence for an ethos of hucksterism.
And yet, he still has not doused himself with gasoline and set himself ablaze on the sidewalk in front of the White House.
What are you waiting for, David?!
“Starting with Sarah Palin”
Wasn’t she the governor of a fairly successful state that effectively ran on a small govt platform?
She dared challenge the establishment.
Duh.
Yeah, that struck me, as well. Regardless of whether you like her or not, where the hell is there the least bit of evidence that she was anything other than scrupulously ethical? And a certain class of douchebag pundit decided that she was unacceptable based, not on substantive issues of policy but because she had the wrong subcultural persona, that they didn’t like the particular crease of her dress.
Fuck David Brooks. In the ass. With the barbed wire wrapped baseball bat from The Walking Dead.
Go ahead and bastardize quotes from Jesus for your own self-aggrandizement. It’s soooooooo professional and smart; and really sticks it to those Jesus-humping Deplorables.
We need a name for co-opting Jesus, like Godwinning (which, now as I type that I realize sounds like the word you would use for co-opting Jesus!)
“You quote the Good Book// when it’s convenient// but you don’t have the sense, no you don’t have the sense// to tie your tangled tongue// so you slash it through the mud.”
These are the same guys who now fellate the corpse of Ronald Reagan but spent the entire time he was rising through the Republican ranks to become president warning about how his aw-shucks yokelism was going to destroy the credibility of the eastern Republican establishment.
Agreed.
Exactly so. The “respectable GOP I knew from back in the day has been replaced by a corrupt band of scoundrels” shtick. And the same people were bitching about how awful the GOP was before Sara Palin.
Dem: “You used to be able to count on Republicans to run a shitty campaign and then give a nice concession speech. Now they have the audacity to win, the scoundrels.”
“Muh Permanant Majority”?
I love it when people who don’t understand Jesus talk about Jesus.
They sure as hell know he was a communist like them!
Yeah, Dave, it’s the GOP that’s rotting from within. The party of Clinton, Conyers, and Franken is the very picture of health.
And youthful vitality.
WTF?
I watched “A Man For All Seasons” yesterday. And it was obvious that the current Dems want to equate Trump with Henry III because of his manner alone, completely disregarding that in substance Trump is closer to Thomas More, following his principles.
Of course, as it has been pointed out many times, the current Dems place Principals (the world) over Principles (one’s soul) so Brooks’ use of this quote is a perfect indication of his complete ignorance.

The main hoist on one of the melt cranes failed last night. I took a little video while I was up there.
https://youtu.be/uig95GGG3W0
I get a sad face saying the video isn’t available.
It’s not just you.
I saw it…
That sounds like a fun video, I would like to see it.
In college I worked doing software for a warehouse management company that had a client who made copper wire and I saw the copper melting thingy while there. It was big and looked impressive. And the wire thingys made noise.
The workers told me the place was hell during communism, now with air filters and climate control it was much better. This may be modern tech in part not just no communism to be fair.
I also remember the place for unexpected errors for software developers. One guys fingers were to thick to press buttons on the mobile terminal holding the software.
Brings a whole new meaning to “fat fingering” an error!
One guys fingers were to thick to press buttons on the mobile terminal holding the software.
I should invent thin finger extensions for people with thick fingers to use with keyboards and mobile phones.
I work with touchscreen HMIs that can have disastrous consequences if someone fat fingers the wrong thing. We try to program them in a way that takes into account all the possibilities of a misc lock and we mostly get it right. However, every now and then someone will fat finger something in a way that hadn’t been thought of.
Too late, the Simpsons did it.
I have never been in a copper smelting plant, but I have talked to people who have. I understand it is a much dirtier process than steel. It’s pretty filthy where I work, even with modern technology and EPA mandates. I imagine a communist era copper smelter would have been horrible.
As to the enviroment being better because of technology-
The plant I work in was built in 1983. We are using basically the same environment controls now that we’re used when the place was built. I think that the problem in your plant was the communism, not the technology.
Steel > Iron > Copper & Tin > Nickel/Lead/Zinc
In general, the more concentrated the ore, the cleaner the operation. If the ore has particularly nasty gangue minerals like greenockite (Cadmium sulfide) or arsenic sulfides, there are going to be messy mitigation processes usually before, but sometimes during or after smelting.
For those of you with a real appreciation of hell on Earth, try this place. Just about any reportage you see concerning the place will try to hide the fact that it consistently ranks among the top 5 most polluted locations on Earth.
In my experience, manly men like Lachowsky, who do really cool industrial things love it when us software geeks get the tour of the plant because we are like little kids.
One of the best things about being an IoT guy is that I have been able to watch all sorts of cool things being done. Watching engine blocks for outboard motors being created was super cool. Also getting to ride around in the gigantic dump trucks that they use in the open pit mines is even better than the little parish priest Jimbo with his Tonka trucks thought it would be.
You are so right Jimbo. I have been asked to take college engineering interns on tours of the plant many times.
I can’t help myself, the first place I take them is the worst, hottest, dirtiest, most frightening places in the plant.
I can’t explain it, but it’s intuitive for me to do this. Some of the interns have been fascinated, some have been scared. Men and boys.

Dylan Farrow: Why has the #MeToo revolution spared Woody Allen?
I like some woody allen movies to be fair. Besides that I got nothing. Although miss Farrow was a litle on the crazy side and that worked in woodys favour
Does it? Molesting a little girl for a long period of time is one reliable way to produce a woman who is “a little on the crazy side”.
That does not change the public image that was used by Allen to his advantage. which little girl are we talking about?
Because your story came out a long time ago, and people forgot, just like they did with a lot of other people, some of whom were convicted.
I know nothing about the validity of this accusation. Something I don’t understand. If a child reports a rape, and the authorities do nothing about it, what kind of parents (especially when there are witnesses i.e. the baby sitter) don’t immediately go and beat a rapist to death. I don’t understand this.
Yeah, I’m with you on that. I’ve got a daughter, and I kind of look at the whole judicial process as an opportunity for the state to avoid my taking matters into my own hands, which I would do without hesitation if they fuck it up.
Exactly Bill.
If a child reports a rape, and the authorities do nothing about it, what kind of parents (especially when there are witnesses i.e. the baby sitter) don’t immediately go and beat a rapist to death.
That’s Deplorable talk right there. Right-thinking people should never second-guess the judgment of the authorities.
Because everybody knows Woody’s a kid toucher and it doesn’t seem to bother people, for whatever reason. He won the Golden Perv award, the get-out-of-jail-free card. I don’t know why, but there’s a certain class of Americans who view the near-worship of Woody Allen as a shibboleth for membership in the club of right-thinkers. He’s like the George Washington of the modern urban left. If that means handwaving child abuse as his being quirky, so be it.
I note with interest that Donald Trump receives none of the same benefit. Also that Roy Moore is being pilloried for behavior that is far, far less creepy (while still on the creepiness scale) than anything Allen has been accused of, or in some cases has admitted to doing. But I don’t think Kate Winslet, bless her heart, is standing up for him.
Screw “The Hat And The Hair”. Someone needs to write something about the business relationship Woody and Weinstein had.
That sounds like a pretty crappy environment to grow up in. Also… “putting his thumb in my mouth”? Is that a sexy thing?
I have a theory. It goes like this:
What’s a Woody Allen? //Millennial
Wasn’t that the name of the cowboy from Toy Story?

The Most Precious Bronze Age Artefacts Were Made With Cosmic Materials
Space daggers!
According to a new study, it’s possible that all iron-based weapons and tools of the Bronze Age were forged using metal salvaged from meteorites. The finding has given experts a better insight into how these tools were created before humans worked out how to produce iron from its ore.
While previous studies had found specific Bronze Age objects to be made from meteoric metal – like one of the daggers buried with King Tutankhamun – this latest research answers the question of just how widespread the practice was.
Albert Jambon, from the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in France, studied museum artefacts from Egypt, Turkey, Syria, and China, analysing them using an X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer to discover they all shared the same off-world origins.

Speaking of raging, yesterday’s day of rage.
Am I the only one that thinks these organised “day of rage” incidents are creepy as hell?
Hey we should be happy with the day of rage. We get if easy. It could be the day of suicide bombing and children killing.
Hamas calls that “Tuesday”.
This version is funnier.
Personally, I’d be more likely to be persuaded by a “Day of Rationally Explaining Why We’re a Bit Miffed”.
Their mission statement includes the goal of “Elimination of the Jewish people”. I really don’t think they need to reiterate why anyone dealling civilly with Israelis annoys them.
So… they’re alt-right Nazis?
/confused prog
No, no, no, no, they’re just criticizing Israel’s foreign policy; there’s nothing antisemitic about it. Frankly, your suggestion is racist, antisemitic and transphobic (just for fun).
And misogynist!
For sure transphobic. I mean, doesn’t Iran pay for the operations out of state funds?
Nothing is more pathetic than impotent rage. A weird combination of childishness and incompetence.
When you have nothing constructive to provide – after all, the only solution they want is one where they destroy Israel and murder the Jews – you are only left with impotent rage.
There is a reason that the quote “If the Palestinians laid down their arms and accepted coexistence there would be peace in the ME, while if the Jews did that there would be a bloodbath/massacre” is so powerful a predictor of what the problem is.
Al Franken’s Resignation and the Selective Force of #MeToo
“That half is cleaning its ranks in the face of—and in clear reaction to—genuine moral depravity on the other side. ”
That is so logically wrong. Not just twisted, it’s wrong. If that were actually the case, then the people being thinned in their ranks wouldn’t be, you know, sexually depraved.
^This.^ “We decided to get rid of our bad guys ’cause the other side is so bad” is not a good lead when trying to pontificate on one side being immoral. Maybe if the article’s point was “both sides are bad” it would work, but as it stands it’s a logic fail.
I’m so tired of their blatant projection of their own depravity on their opponents. It doesn’t occur to them that maybe their opponents are less likely to attract sexual predators than they are.
It might work if the people gotten rid of weren’t in safe seats.
…so Al Franken resigned because someone else was a perv? I don’t get it.
Did he really resign though? I heard the speech and it sounded like what he was saying, other than blaming everyone else, was that he would at some point come back to offer his resignation….
OF course it’s wrong. He insists on wrongness as the utmost in goodness by doubling down with name-dropping a dunderhead like Sontag.
Consider the tax bill, which is stitched together from shameless greed and boldface lies. Consider the series of racist travel bans. Consider the withdrawal from a series of international agreements aimed at bettering the future of humanity, from migration to climate change to cultural preservation – non sequitur?
Moore should not run though
The Trump era is one of deep and open immorality in politics.
It’s like Kennedy never existed.
+1 spit-roasting by the president and his AG brother.
Which Kennedy? The perv or the killer?
As if that is a way of distinguishing them, they all perved they all killed.
The thing is: Frankenstein’s resignation is being forced so the party can have the high moral ground again. The Dems lost any middle ground support because of the way they handled it. If they actually cared about sexual harassment they wouldn’t have made excuses for him in the first place. I don’t see why the fact that they have strategized and are now changing tacks should make me believe they care now.
Franken’s little resignation speech put to rest any ideas that it wasn’t pure political kabuki. “I was wrong and I’m sorry, but look at what that guy is doing.” What an asshole.
^^^Exactly.
I imagine a scene were Franken is in a room with Pelosi et. al just like State Sen. Davis was with the Madam President in The Wire.
He tries to bring all them muthafuckas down and she explains that if he falls on his sword he’ll get set up with a cushy job, but if he fights the Machine they will bury him.
Exact same thing. Such an accurate show. Fuck Simon, though. Guh. How can you be so close and not get it?
I’m going to take two weeks vacation someday and finally watch The Wire, GoT and eat some of that Chipotle stuff. It’s pathetic how much I haven’t experienced. As of today, I’m half way through Three’s Company. Does Jack bang Chrissy or Janet first?
In a twist, he ends up in bed with Mr Roper before either of them.
HE WAS GAY ALL ALONG!!!
Chipotle sucks.
At first I read that as “pure political bukkake”.
…works.
I’ll eat my hat if he actually resigns. The entire thing is nothing more than a dodge to try to help Doug Jones – why else is he not actually resigning until after that election? He said he’s sorry but he still admitted to nothing. He still says he didn’t do what he’s accused of doing. This way, if Moore wins, he can just say “Well, since the Republicans elected this guy, I don’t think I should go through with resigning”
That’s what irks me most of all: basically saying “I didn’t do it, but I’ll accept the punishment” speaks of low character any way you slice it. If he really didn’t do it, this means he places no value on either his reputation or the idea of justice. If he did do it, this means he places no value on repentance as a virtue. Either way he comes off as a coward.
^^^Yep. Good people of Minnesoda, please, please don’t reelect this clown when he comes back up for it.
On the one hand I’ll be very happy to see that clown go. But careful what you wish for. Who will replace him?
Another asshole. So?
I’ve NEVER voted for him.

I think Tundra is the one who put him over the top, but you didn’t hear it from me.
What can I say? The car had a huge trunk!
Reminds me of the leftist piece of shit we had working for us a few years ago as marketing assistant/receptionist. She was running her OWN business out of her cube, using company office supplies and – the kicker – infected every PC in the office with viruses. When she was ordered to cease, she countered with “Bbbut HE takes 20 minutes longer for lunch EVERY DAY!”
1) HE is SALARIED, you are not.
2) HE puts in loads of unpaid overtime, you are taking money and not doing work
3) HE gets his work completed, you do not
They weren’t even going to fire her, until she volunteered to be the office rat about comparatively minor transgressions of others. “Um, no, that doesn’t really add value and you aren’t qualified to be an auditor. Sorry.”

Handsome Wants as Handsome Does: Physical Attractiveness and Gender Differences in Revealed Sexual Preferences
http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/19485565.2011.615172?journalCode=hsbi20&
In this article I evaluate the effect of physical attractiveness on young adults’ sexual and romantic outcomes to reveal gender differences in acted preferences. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), a probability sample of young adults (n = 14,276), I investigate gender differences in desired sexual partner accumulation, relationship status, and timing of sexual intercourse. I find gender differences in sexual and romantic strategies consistent with those predicted by the double standard of sexuality and evolutionary theory. Specifically, compared to men, women pursue more committed relationships, fewer sexual partners, and delayed sexual intercourse.
It’s almost as if traditional wisdom and eveolutionary theory have something to them.
Lies we all know gender doesn’t exist!
Gotta love studies in which public money is expended to tell us the equivalent of “the sky is blue”.
Also, great loaded language; apparently individual preferences are a “double standard”?
So, most chick’s dig stable good looking guys who aren’t creeps. Color me shocked.

China Launches World’s First All-Electric Cargo Ship, Will Use It To Haul Coal
I once had an idea for a cargo ship. It would be unmanned, and be driven primarily by sails with automated rigging. It would be for nonperishable cargoes and aimed to offset the slow speed by being cheaper.
Never got past the “Neat idea” stage.
We need to have Lt Fish have a look at that.
Cargo ships are dispatched and scheduled to arrive with inventories at the receiving end in mind. Ships powered by sails would have a hard time helping the supply chain maintain a set schedule, especially one based on maintaining minimal warehoused inventory.
That sounds like something Elon Musk would come up with to rousing applause from his base. The business world, otoh, would be taking a hard pass.
Hrmm… maybe we can sell the idea to Mr Musk for a few mil…
He can use it to deliver his Model 3s to Neverland.
*opera applause*
All his idea is lacking is a few subsidies and it would be perfect.
Well, we need to recharge the batteries somehow, so if we add windmills to the tops of the masts and solar panels to the decks, we can apply for EU and Canukistani Green initiatives in cargo transformation.
https://youtu.be/WhtKkl0L7Ek
Windmills do not work that way!
Actually, the yield will be low, but the wind will be moving faster than the ship, as the resistance from the water will keep the ship moving slower – so the windmills won’t provide much power, but they will still turn because the wind is faster than the ship.
Maybe you could use a bunch of those little electric fans that people use to keep themselves cool at concerts to provide wind for the sails when the seas are becalmed.
That’s silly – all we need to do is design the dynamo inside the windmills so that we can turn them into motors to drive the fans if there’s not enough wind!
We can predict the climate a century from now, surely we can predict how the wind will blow next week.
Cleanup of an 11-day protest in downtown Olympia over the shipment of fracking materials cost the city about $40,000, according to City Manager Steve Hall. Port Commissioner E.J. Zita wants the Port of Olympia to foot at least part of that bill.

Cultural Revolution
So while the current frenzy to expose sexual harassers is, in large part, a reaction to the trauma of Trump’s election, it has not yet touched Trump himself.
A great many liberal women were forever changed when they saw the grotesque beauty pageant impresario defeat the first female major-party candidate for president. In response, women all over America have poured into local politics, determined to find places where it’s still possible for them to have influence. The same impulse led some women to go public about sexual harassment and abuse. As Susan Fowler, a former engineer at Uber who exposed a pervasive culture of sexual harassment at that company, told Time: “When Trump won the election, I felt a crushing sense of powerlessness. And then I realized that I had to do something.”
For doing something, she and all the others who have exposed the sexual degradation that mars so many professional lives deserve our gratitude and admiration. They’ve made things tangibly better for the women in their industries. But ultimately, the cultural currency of the #MeToo movement is not a substitute for political power. The incendiary rage unleashed by Trump’s election needs to be directed back at him. Otherwise, only those who already advocate women’s equality will be forced to grant it.
Light vs Darkness.
Democrats good. Republikkkins bad.
DUMBULDOORS ARMEE!
A guy on FB was just asking how Roy Moore was “Trump draining the swamp”. Uh, It looks like we’re going to get at least 4 sexual harassment resignations. 4 out, 2 in (Trump and Moore by the way he calculates) is a net drain on harassers.
You misspelled LIARS.
Strange question: Anyone have experience with elderly extortion rings, specifically in California?
I have some experience with a Nigerian Prince if that helps…
Are these rings run by the elderly, or trying to make you give them your elders?
Hemorrhoid pillow?
Elderberry trees are the worst.
I should add context.
A friend of the wife has a very well-to-do elderly brother in California. He is apparently in some stage of dementia. A caretaker has gotten her hooks into him and has locked out the rest of the family, including the son who was been in business with the father for decades. Checks for services/products are being cut and disappearing on a regular basis to the tune of millions of dollars. The caretaker has a small army of attorneys behind her so this is obviously an operation. Dad is incoherent and being sequestered away.
The family had a court date yesterday to try to establish some control over dad and the opposing attorneys cornered the son in the hallway. Three of them physically cornered him under the pretense of serving him papers. They were videotaping him with a phone. When he raised his hand to move the phone away form his face, they had him arrested for assault and physically jailed so he could not appear in court that day. Bail was set at $50K.
So, in my estimation the attorneys have co-conspirators in the courts, probably a bailiff and maybe a judge.
The sister is in a panic for obvious reasons. When my wife first explained the situation to me a few months ago my suggestion was to hire a hitman because these guys are obviously pros and playing for keeps. That being a (only somewhat) non-serious answer, I’m open to any advice I could pass along.
That kind of shit lands you in a special ring of hell. The hitman idea probably isn’t he way to go, though.
Hitman = FBI agent.
Only hire a hitman if you know the hitman.
If it were me, I’d be asking people I know if they’d be up for exchanging favors. Like “oh, somebody wronged you very badly? Me too! Let’s see if we can help each other out.”
I hate thieves. I mean I really hate thieves.
People like this need to be strung up in the public square.
Call State AG.
Thanks, passed it along.
California? He’s probably in on it.
Much smaller scale, but my wife’s uncle was left with inheritances from his mother and brother, along with a house. He’s not the smartest guy around – plenty nice though – and has worked a menial job his entire life. A perfect mark for someone with bad intentions.
So this guy in his late 60s suddenly has a new “girlfriend,” who was in her 30s. She moves in, along with a few of her friends. From what I can tell they bled a lot of cash out of the poor guy and got free room ‘n’ board while doing it. It thankfully ended after a few months and he kicked everyone out of the house.
Of course before that her uncle defended his new relationship to the hilt. But such is the way.
—
Regarding your situation – the brother has to be freed somehow someway. He’s the key, and as long as they can get his signature then the bleeding of money will continue.
Yeah. The family managed to get the court to order a physical/mental evaluation by a doctor. The opposing side was obviously against it.
They’re going to pour the coals on the money extraction operation now, and frankly I’ll be surprised if dad lives long enough to get to the eval.
I would assume the best response would be the same advice for any other situation where the system is being used against you by more skillful operators:
Hire your own counter operators within the system. Get a good legal team, initiate restraining orders, file legal complaints, make large donations to your local politicians while making them aware of the situation.
Dad is incoherent and being sequestered away.
If one of my family members were kidnapped, my immediate action would be to go in armed to retrieve them. Then work on the legal fronts.
On a much lower scale, my wife’s ex-employer tried to use the system to harass her with false claims of her violating her non-compete. Even paid a good deal of money to have a sheriff’s deputy serve her right before Christmas last year. Her employer is extremely wealthy and thought she could drag this out in court to inflict pain on her. I immediately hired the best attorney in this part of the state for this legal area. One phone call from our attorney to theirs ended it on the spot. That one call was expensive, but her ex-employer paid many times over in legal expenses and court costs for the failed vendetta.
the opposing attorneys cornered the son in the hallway
Report them to the state bar. Its prima facie unethical for attorneys to have contact with someone who has an attorney without permission.
This stinks of organized crime to me. Definitely call the state AG, adult protective services, and the FBI.
Thanks RC, passed along
In addition to what RC Dean said, if you’re in Los Angeles county the District Attorney’s office has an Elder Abuse division, and I would think most of the larger offices state-wide do as wel
My spouse is an investigator into auto insurance fraud, but I’m sure he has contacts in other fraud areas. I’ll ask him tonight. What county is your friend in?
I don’t know but I’ll ask.
This brings back a happy memory. The night my ex sucker-sued me, I got a call from her attorney. I expect she was intending to read me the riot act and pass along to the court anything out of line I would say to her. I hadn’t been served papers yet, but had been alerted by my son who had been accosted by his mother on his way home from school (and the failure of my daughter to come home from school) what was going on.
So the moment she identified herself, I cut her off and told her “before you start, you should know that in this matter I am represented by Attorney S_____ (my attorney from the divorce).” There was a long silence and then she thanked me and said goodbye. I could actually hear her seething over the phone.
So she was reduced to quoting clips of my emails out of context to ‘prove’ how I was a horrible person.
Heh. I had that with the consumer case I ran recently on a used car.
The shitheels decided to respond with a spirited, pretty aggressive suit of their own. As it turned out, their attorney was competent, but tried that shit with me. My pitbull lawyer briefed me well. Best money I’ve ever spent.
I used to do opposition research and attending town halls exposes you to all the different flavors of salt of the earth. There’s an activist group called FACEUS that believes there’s a scheme in probate courts where judges will appoint guardians and then bleed estates dry in fee. Only thing I got.
You mean State Government?
I have been informed by HM that it’s now officially Destroy Your Dick December so get to it! (Not sure what do to if you have no dick, but who am I kidding, TANFL)

The Everton match shows why I wanted Unsworth to get a real shot at the manager’s job. It was a group of 2nd and 3rd stringers, who outplayed anything the 1st team had done in Europe. Two starters and all 3 subs made 1st team debuts. Including one 16 year old who was 9 days younger than Rooney’s Everton debut.
These are the guys that Unsworth has been coaching up the last few years.
This was also my biggest problem with Koeman. The under 23s are loaded with talent, give some of them a run out with the first team and see who is ready. You don’t have to spread money around Europe is you can grow your own.
IF you can grow your own.
huh?
Was i the soccer talk or something specific you didn’t understand. This was a reply to the first story in the links.
But well before the first link. Up in the sports section.
This is the biggest thing missing from US soccer; dedicated academies starting very young. I know some of MLS is trying to catch up and institute youth programs which is good. NCAA soccer is garbage and by that time it’s too late to unlearn a lot of bad habits. And starting your pro career at 21-22 is also too late. If the US wants to become a first tier force, we need to start cultivating talent at age 7 or 8 and groom them (not in *that* way OMWC).
Something tells me the answer to that is “we don’t really want to.”
The reason we aren’t and wont be a first tier force is that the best American athletes go into basketball, baseball, football, hockey and golf. Okay, maybe not that last one.
I would like to note that all of those games you listed tend to have higher scores than your average soccer match, even the one where the goal is to have the lowest score.
I dont know, Minus 11 (to pick the winning score from last Sunday) is less than 0.
You can’t get a negative number of swings of the club. I cound absolute scores, not relative to par.
And we need to do it in an academy system (which MLS really has to build up), not through the current travel soccer system.
We have an academy system here and both of my kids play. The problem is that the system is geared to make the club owners rich. It costs a fucking fortune for them to play a sport that kids in the 3rd world kick our ass at. Soccer should be the most accessible sport, but it costs almost as much as high tier travel hockey to participate.
Ugh. I read above wrong. We have development academy which is specialized over the travel tier of soccer, but it’s not affiliated with any pro club. They have affiliated academies here with EPL and Bundesliga teams, but it looks like a money grab as well.
I have problems with it, just like with tennis academies.
From a libertarian perspective, it is okay, but I just think dedicating to it at that young of an age is a bad idea. I dont even like the travel teams that are so prevalent these days. I think kids should play multiple sports until at least 16.
But, if you want to develop the skills and get the scholarships or go pro or whatever, in many cases you have to start young. It is hard to go to the NBA at 19 if you aren’t playing AAU ball at 14.
And by 14 you mean committed 100% to basketball by age 9.
Plenty who grow in middle school start playing seriously at 14 and are just fine. But yeah, I probably meant 9.
I was just on a plane with the Real Salt Lake academy U-15 and U-19 team. I saw the rest of the teams’ academy groups in the Tampa airport.
Also, can we make all MLS teams whose name is a rip off of a European Team change it?
And on that topic, how come no one has used Wednesday? That’s the coolest of the goofy Euro names. Where is Nashville Wednesday FC?
40 teams around the world use Real in their name.
So you’re saying we should use ‘Fake’?
Also, Sheffield Wednesday got their name (as a cricket club originally) because they played matches on Wednesday.
Artistic expression, discrimination and the First Amendment
Society goes.
Government doesn’t.
Could you have this “society” give us a quote for an article?
The writer and his buddy’s I’m guessing. Anyone that says, “… may not be enough to sufficiently promote civil rights” has more than a tiny authoritarian boner.
“GIBS ME DAT”
-Society
Gods damn it… I couldn’t even make it through the excerpt you quoted without getting pissed off.
–Lunch counters were willing to serve black customers, the government forbid them from doing it
–Society may have a valid interest in deterring discrimination, and it does this by shaming and calling out people who discriminate
–Equal protection under the law has nothing to do with who a business serves
–No. Everything doesn’t work as a gods damned car analogy.
Not all of them, for example the Pickrick in Atlanta. Which is how Lester Maddox became Governor.
Thank you for keeping me honest. Yes, there were some establishments that were owned by racists, and refused service to people on their own.
But, at the same time, the valid points that the civil rights movement was peacefully making would have likely started to win over hearts and minds sufficiently to end up with those businesses being boycotted by the majority of people, leading to their going out of business. And all in all, there were not very many businesses that could have easily stayed competitive into the 1970s and 1980s as a company like Walmart came into a huge presence in the South, and if a large company like that showed success by not discriminating, it would run its discriminatory competitors out of business that much faster.
^THIS^
I was just being pedantic. And who cares if one tiny diner was a racist holdout anyway?
Side note: Georgia Tech ended up owning the building the Pickrick was in. It was used for non-class related offices, and was torn down for Olympic construction in the 90s.
IMO, the civil rights movement wasn’t even that important. Discrimination was on a permanent downhill path the day the Dodgers signed Jackie Robinson.
True, but I think a lot of folks in the North didn’t understand it, nor would they have even begun to change their views (See Boston as an example, but a lot of Northern places were at least as racist as the South) without nationwide coverage of the Civil Rights movement, as well as the Freedom Rides. Over 3/4 of my Sunday School teachers when I was a kid were on those Freedom Rides (old school liberals), and I credit them with helping me realize that libertarianism is the best political philosophy (even though that’s absolutely not what they wanted me to believe).
But there would also exist a few black owned businesses which would refuse to serve non-blacks. Etc. This never occurs to these SJWs.
Because the progressive stack is predicated on assumptions of opporession which preclude there from ever being anything but white owned businesses in a deregulated environment.
It does occur to some of them and they are on board with that kind of discrimination.
Not all SJW’s are lazy, all of them are simply unprincipled.
“–Lunch counters were willing to serve black customers, the government forbid them from doing it”
Yep, and the first mass transit systems were private companies, who didn’t segregate or assign seating. Then the government imposed regulations and outright banned private buses and trams.
It’s always, always, always government.
First the government imposed pricing restrictions, which begat bankruptcies, which begat taxpayer takeover, which begat laws preventing competition.
The sad part is this is true of most industries, not just mass transportation.
Those bakers not baking that cake is the exact same thing as running someone over with a car.
“And because society has a valid interest in deterring discrimination…”
Society =/= government
Just because we don’t want government to do something, doesn’t mean we dont want it done.
-someone smarter than I
There is no such fucking thing as society.
Hush, you. We have to pretend there is something called society so that we can make the argument that there is an alternative to government for most things.
Society exists in the same sense that the market exists. As in, both are mere amalgamations of numerous individual choices and preferences. The market may desire more Transformers films, but this doesn’t mean everyone wants them. Society may disapprove of discrimination, but this doesn’t mean everyone does. If an individual is free, this means they have the right to disagree with the market and society (and the government).
Black people would still be waiting for some lunch counters to serve them if we solely relied upon the free market to do its job.
On the other hand, they wouldn’t have had to wait more than 5 seconds for most lunch counters to serve them had there not been laws restraining the market from functioning in some southern states. But that’s only valid if your goal is for black people to have a place to eat lunch and not to beat certain people into ideological compliance.
“Black people would still be waiting for some lunch counters to serve them ”
Absolutely! Black people are far too stupid to figure out that they might get better service at a different establishment – they will wait in line at the awful establishment until they starve to death. Thank God for the white bureaucrats who stepped in and saved them.
“Black people would still be waiting for some lunch counters to serve them if we solely relied upon the free market to do its job.”
Call me evil, but ok. Some people are dicks. The whole point is that we don’t have to impose homogenous sensibilities. When I was a Christian missionary, there was a shop owner who charged me more than the rest of her customers. You know what I did, I stopped shopping there.
Slight adjustment. Thoughtcrimes create a totalitarian state.
This is the political equivalent of saying that you have black friends.
Please innumerate them. Please show your work. I do not believe this is more than a trivial number, and if it is, I would like to avoid them.
Black people would still be waiting for some lunch counters to serve them if we solely relied upon the free market to do its job.
Bullshit. Jim Crow was government-engineered.
How would the market handle a restaurant that actively discriminated against blacks? Picketing, protesting, social media haranguing. The restaurant would most likely do is go out of business in spectacular fashion. Even non-SJW types would not participate in active discrimination.
Thus past saturday, it was 75 degrees outside. I just got home from work and it is currently 14 degrees outside. Thank ZARDOZ for my fireplace and the wood I put in it.
How does an FBI Director get to refuse to answer questions during Congressional testimony?
Rogue agency… what?
Because just about every legislator is very aware of two things:
(1) Bad stuff they themselves have done.
(2) That the FBI knows all about it and will leak it to the press,
This started with J. Edgar Hoover and has gotten exponentially worse as the surveillance state grew and snooping technology improved.
Because he knows that no one in Congress has any stones and won’t toss him in the can for defying Congress.
If they didn’t go after Clapper for outright perjury, how can you bitch about a little disobedience?
The Franks thing is just strange. There absolutely has to be more to it than the surrogacy questions (like, bro, do you have any friends that AREN’T your employees?), which are weird and offputting to me, but don’t necessarily rise to the level of sexual harassment.
Yep. I’m thinkin’ he was basting a turkey at the time or something.
Even one of the accusers came out and said it was “weird” but not worthy of resignation. Maybe there’s more and he’s trying to get out in front of it? Maybe it actually was a Handmaiden’s Tale situation?
Wouldn’t surprise me if he actually attempted to use that method of surrogacy or at least strongly suggested it one or more times to the actual surrogates or women he was requesting to be surrogates
do you have any friends that AREN’T your employees?
That are breeding age? Not many people have friends significantly younger than them.
Praise be to the Ascended One. Though he is gone, his beneficence remains upon us.
The American job market is the strongest it’s been in a decade, and arguably the strongest since 2000. The United States has now added jobs for 86 consecutive months — a downward blip in September was later revised to show a small gain — and the unemployment rate is lower than it ever got during the last boom, which ended when the housing bubble burst. Even wage growth, long the weak spot in an otherwise strong recovery, is showing signs of picking up.
“It’s a really, really strong economy,” said Tom Gimbel, chief executive of LaSalle Network, a staffing firm in Chicago. “Companies really want to take advantage of the economy, so they want to hire and get while the getting’s good.”

The latest batch of strong numbers come as congressional Republicans are on the verge of passing a $1.5 trillion tax cut plan, which President Trump could sign into law this month. Economists expect the bill to provide at least a modest lift to the economy — but they aren’t sure that’s a good idea. With unemployment so low and the economy fundamentally healthy, a tax cut could lead the economy to overheat, pushing up inflation and forcing policymakers at the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates faster than planned.
“It’s a very poorly timed fiscal stimulus,” said Joseph Song, an economist at Bank of America. “It kind of raises the risk of a boom-bust cycle.”
These guys are totally without shame. One day, they lament the baffling absence of inflation, despite the valiant efforts of our all-knowing mumbo jumbo priesthood at the Federal Reserve Bank. The next day, they are fretting about those dopey Republikkkins “overheating” the economy which will cause the Fed to raise rates and tank the whole shebang.
They’re hacks. They’ve admitted it themselves (see: Thrush, Glenn).
They’re really shitting their pants because any organic economic recovery (and I’m not convinced we’re in one) would result in market rates rising, which would both limit the fed’s ability to keep federal debt interest-free and also short dick equities, which have been the only game in town for the last 12 years or so if you want a return that beats inflation. No banker that’s been suckling off that teat for the last 12 years wants that bubble to pop. Imagine if the proles could get 4% on savings like they were back in the bad old days of… 2005.
Yes. They’re fucked. Neither the government nor the banks can tolerate a significant rate increase at this point, and the equity bubble continues to grow. The pop is coming (again) and with each successive rupture, it’s only going to get bigger.
“It kind of raises the risk of a boom-bust cycle.”
The boom-bust cycle is kind of baked into the economy. I’d rather policies that encourage the booms to be larger than not, thank you very much Mr. Economist.

When I was a kid, I learned to play bridge with my grandparents and parents. It’s a great card game. I haven’t played in years because I live in a very uncultured part of the U.S. I wish I could play again, but the only people I know who know how are my siblings and my parents. I would try to teach the game, but it takes quite a bit teaching and a lot of experience to understand the conventions, and I don’t think most of the people I associate with have that kind of patience.
I have to play spades instead. *sigh*
I can’t stand spades. Its like bridge for idiots.
I learned bridge in college, none of my friends are willing to learn. At least they will play Euchre instead of Spades.
True. Spades is bridge for people who haven’t put in the time to learn the bidding system. bridge is a far superior game to spades.
My extended family plays a ton of card games, but we hate bridge. We’ve all tried it at one time or another, and it just is not that much fun.
The thing about bridge-
It takes a ton of practice. There are nuances in the bidding (I call these nuances conventions) that make or break the while game. If you are plain with people who don’t understand those nuances, then the game won’t be fun. It takes a group who knows what they are doing to play bridge. Playing bridge with a bunch of rookies will never work out.
Bridge rulz.
What is it with the NHL? Flyers couldn’t beat the Little Sisters of the Poor and then go on the road to Western Canada and beat three teams in four days. I guess we have hit that part of the season where some teams go to sleep and the coaches have to continually remind them that points in December count as much as points in March.
…or they are in the inevitable decline after three Cups in the past 7 years 🙁
Funken Couturier. I picked Bryan Rust over him with a wire pick.
Of course, this flies in the face of the concept of equal protection under the law. We don’t allow a few motorists to recklessly speed down neighborhood streets because most of us will adhere to government statutes on driver safety.
These individuals, albeit limited in number, continue to pose hazards on our roadways; therefore, these provisions apply to them as well. If some are permitted to flaunt the law, why have it in the first place?
Ow, my head.
“If some are permitted to flaunt the law”
Look at my law! Isn’t it so beautiful?

For only the second time in my 31 years in this town, Victoria TX got snow! It wasn’t nearly as dramatic as the 2004 snowfall, but it’s enough for snowmen and snowball fights and such. The ROADZ are perfectly fine, no problems getting around. The town looks great.
I’m glad I live in a place where snow is rare enough to be a treat. I’d hate to be sick of the stuff.
March in Albany
3-4 years ago, this was a common sight. We were running out places to put the snow, even though we are used to the stuff.
The only mildly positive thing I would say about the locale I live in now is that there’s no snow. Got plenty of it when I lived up north. I wouldn’t be upset if I never saw it again.
I haven’t seen suthen this morning, but I understand it’s snowing in Baton Rouge this morning. That doesn’t happen very often.

You guys will love this. And just in case you all forgot what kind of egotistical know-nothing jerk off Obama was:
“…That’s what happened in Germany in the 1930s, which despite the democracy of the Weimar Republic and centuries of high-level cultural and scientific achievements, Adolph Hitler rose to dominate, Obama noted. “Sixty million people died. . . .So, you’ve got to pay attention. And vote.”
There he is. In all his magnificent mediocrity. Not only did he misinterpret the Weimar Republic (because he’s a left-wing ignoramus) he seemed to make this calculus: Trump = 60 million dead.
Yup. He went the Hitler route. Because he’s a lazy moron.
He sounds EXACTLY like the remedial kid in class with too much self-esteem who thought he knew stuff but knew nothing yet still raised his arm to spew his nonsense in class.
Obama. NOT GONE ENOUGH.
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171206/BLOGS02/171209933/invoking-the-specter-of-nazi-germany-obama-warns-against-complacency
This is red meat for the cult members, but I think it turns most people off. Even a few prior Obama lovers I know have said he needs to ride off into the sunset.
Problem is places like the Economic Club of Chicago actually invite and pay for his middling musings. One can only hope that once and for all people in the audience rolled their eyes and saw him for what he is: A gasbag.
Pay handsomely, too.
If I were a member of an economic club that invited Obama to make a presentation I’d consider asking for my dues back.
I called out his executive orders as petty and from a narcissist on a lefty friend’s Facebook, and wow, the derp and RHEEEing.
As much as the press lauds this guy as such a staggering intellect, I’ve never seen any actual evidence as such other than “He went to Harvard Law School”
I would kill to engage that fucker in a discussion/debate on Hitler, interwar German politics, and the rise of the Third Reich. Lil’ ol’ peon me with my state school diploma would wipe the fucking floor with him.
The thing that makes this most cringe-worthy is that he was playing the same role Hitler did in putting Germany on a very bad path..
Hitler didn’t come up with the final solution on his own and impose it on the German people. He prosletyzed the crowd. The crowd responded with varying levels of enthusiasm to his various statements. The ones they liked the most became the ones he focused on. He and the crowd pushed each other into the bad place.
That’s the process by which the incredibly destructive ACA came into force. It started with Obama impulsively making an unplanned promise to a small crowd during a stump speech. They loved it. He emphasized it in his next speech. They loved it more. Other people got involved, and a few years later my neighbor is buying insurance coverage he neither wants nor needs and laying off employees to reduce his expenses so that he can pay for it.
The defense against these sorts of things are a legal system and cultural norms that restrain people from overstepping certain bounds. A strictly limited government is critical to preventing things like the Holocaust. And Obama did everything in his power to transform the U.S. government to one where a single man, armed with “a pen and a phone” could impose his will with almost no restriction.
He is an utterly self-oblivious narcissistic piece of excrement.
He’s a walking embodiment of what’s wrong with Affirmative Action.
What. A. Cunt.
Can this shitstain finally go away? I’m getting so sick and tired of hearing about Obama. GO AWAY! You had your completely undeserved 8 years of fame in the White House. Now, go retire and enjoy the rest of your life and shut your damn mouth.
The one thing I regret about Hillary not winning is how the mob would have handled this.
Obama is too much of an narcissist to go away. He was always going to find ways to bloviate about how wonderful he is.
If Hillary was the president, she’d have to deal with him claiming that anything that went well was started by him and anything bad was due to some change she made to his previously working policies.
People know that Hitler’s takeover was really a military coup, right? He didn’t really come to power democratically.
While the final step into power was a coup, the Nazis achieved the strong position from which to launch their coup by fairly winning an election. Hitler won the chancellorship democratically and then immediately set about undemocratically removing all rivals.
The chancellor was a basically toothless position when Hitler received it. It was given massive power because brownshirts standing on the floor of Parliament forced them to vote him that power.
True, but the chancellor was the head of state and it’s easier to launch a coup when you are already the democratically elected leader of your country. See Hugo Chavez and Recep Erdogan for recent examples. What I’m saying is it’s complicated: it wasn’t just a coup or just democracy, it was both. The real lesson is to be suspicious of democrats who seek to expand their power, as they may be dictators at heart.
At the 1932 German election the Nazis & the Communists combined to win about 50% of the popular vote – despite both parties openly campaigning on removing democratic government. Trump won by campaigning – effectively – for restoring/extending representation. Whether that’s what will happen is open for debate – but there really is little comparison between the two.
I’d also note that the Reichstag Fire was instrumental in the Nazis’ rise to power. Whether they set the fire as a false flag operation, the Communists did it as an act of terrorism, it was an accident, an act of God, or something else, it gave the Nazis ammunition to convince the Reich President to do the contemporary equivalent of a modern declaration of emergency. Civil liberties were suspended and the Nazis were allowed to turn the institutions of state against the public, and specifically against their opposition.
Listen to our Lord, Obama. It had NOTHING to do with the Weimar Republic’s destruction of the economy.
No bar would risk doing a promo like this in Cleveland. I know of one bar that just pours half shots for everyone when the Browns score.
After all, this happened in Cleveland when beer wasn’t even free, just really really cheap.

I was actually asked by a feminist “Would you like it if women looked at you on the street in a sexual way” Ehm … yes? Then again who knows
I think there is a majority of women that would be seriously depressed if they stopped being noticed. Feminism is just ugly women mad at pretty women for getting all the attention.
I think there is a majority of women that would be seriously depressed if they stopped being noticed.
If the check stand rags are any indicator, this seems to already be happening. After spending the last 10 years calling every flirtation and corny pick up line exactly equivalent to anal gang rape with no lube, a lot of women are now complaining about how men are too oblivious, cowardly, and video game obsessed to approach them for dates.

If said photos are taken in public areas where there’s no reasonable expectation of privacy, I don’t see how this is a crime. It would be especially laughable given that over 40% of London public spaces are under constant CCTV surveillance.
If BART has taught us anything, it’s that CCTV is racist.
I’m sure it was worth it.

A good read. The most interesting part from the story was this:
Talk about government protections backfiring.

Yea, Bloomberg manages to veer off of the story to take a potshot at payday lenders, which are completely unrelated to what was happening to Therrien.

The World Might Be Better Off Without College for Everyone
Students don’t seem to be getting much out of higher education.

I say free PHDs for all,

I only skimmed the article.
College is not a good idea for everyone.
I have young relatives that are in the 17-19 age range. Their mother is trying to push them into college. She points to me as an example.
I tell her and them, the world has changed. You can’t discharge student loan debt in bankruptcy. Tuition prices have skyrocketed. College degrees are much more common now. If you go to college, you have to be smart about it. You just can’t go for the sake of going. It has to make sense for your long term plans for life or else you’re going to screw yourself over. And don’t knock the trades, you can make a good living there without college hassle.
This went in one ear and out the other for their mother. Thankfully, my young relatives have put off college for now for reasons that I’m not going to go into, but don’t entirely involve my advice. They’ve unprepared and would have made very stupid decisions had they gone now, fucking over their lives.
I have said it before on here and i will reiterate it now.
I’m a thirty year old dude who barely paid enoigh attention to get through High school.
I went to work and learned some stuff at age 17. I went through an apprenticeship at the company worked for and became an electrician.
I own (literally own, not paying for) my house and my land, Have a great paying job with opportunities to go anywhere, and should be able to retire by 50.
This is America. There are a ton of ways to make it that don’t involve going a house in debt to start off your adulthood.
^^^American Dream.
Yes.
If I had it to do over again I’d probably have skipped college entirely. The useful knowledge I had gained by the time I graduated could have been had for, at most, a couple thousand dollars worth of classes and books in my free time. On the bright side, it didn’t cost me anything, and by attending online I finished in 3 years and saved you fine taxpayers a fortune. And if I never need that aforementioned janitorial job I’ll have my papers for the gatekeeper.
My older brother wanted to go to vo-tech when he was in high school. If I remember correctly, he wanted to become a car mechanic. Our parents refused to let him, and insisted he stay with an academic program. He wasn’t college bound at all despite their wishful thinking otherwise. He’s a smart and capable guy, but not college material. His skills and interests lie elsewhere.
Our parents’ attitude was if he wanted to go with technical training instead of college, he could do it on his own dime after finishing high school because he really should be going college.
My older brother rebelled. Things didn’t work out too well for him as the result of his rebellion. I think had our parents used their brains and realized that forcing my older brother into a path that he is not suited for, my older brother would be in much better shape than he is now. He is gainfully employed and apparently has finally found a good woman, but I think he would have hit on this earlier and had an easier time had our parents allowed him to go to vo-tech.
If I ever have kids, increasingly doubtful as I get older, I intend to never make the mistake my parents made with my older brother.
My father is a medical doctor. He saw me for what I was. He knew that I was going to to do what I wanted to do and eventually came around to the fact I was going to do me. He turned me loose at about sixteen.
I have done well for myself since then.
I’m a thirty year old dude who barely paid enoigh attention to get through High school.
In contrast, I’m almost 30, with a bachelor’s degree and a jurisdoctor, and I’m $520k in debt (house included). It will take 7 to 10 years for me to “catch up” to where you are already.
Granted, a large amount of that debt is from less than stellar decision making, but college can easily put you behind the 8 ball, especially graduate degrees.
I can’t imagine being in you position. Hopefully you will end up better off than I.
Yes, some days I can’t imagine being in my position. I was a nearly debt free Dave Ramsey acolyte before law school. My wife and I thought that we could get through school debt free on my income, but things went sideways quickly.
I’m starting in a giant hole, but my shovel is big enough to dig out quickly. Most of my classmates aren’t so lucky.
Yeah my wife’s law school blew a hole in our financial ship. The first year was brutal since she wasn’t pulling in any money and we didn’t know about the income-based payments.
It was like making a double mortgage payment on two really nice houses. Or going back to college days where you hoped the car wouldn’t break down or else you would have a hard time making that electric bill.
Her business is growing now – almost, but not quite – to the point where my retiring from IT work may be possible in another year or two.
Low 30s and am student loan debt free. I’m finding it worthwhile to take out $40k now, and possibly another $60k in a year if go for the PhD. It feels crazy to take out $100k for two pieces of paper that don’t add any more to my skillset than a few thousand in books and specialized training would do.
My company uses a standard metric for every employee of years experience + degree type = pay/promotions. I think it’s done to minimize liability of potential discrimination lawsuits. I did the math and that $40k or $100k becomes an investment that allows me to quickly leapfrog up the ladder with a solid ROI.
It helped having many years of work experience under my belt before going to school with a clear cut idea of what I needed and how that would help my career. I wasted too much time and money in my early 20s preparing for med school because I felt it was expected of me despite having no interest in that lifestyle.
*my wife does have student loans (which makes them mine too), but we’re so close to finally being done with those.
You are more courageous than I semi-spartan. There’s no way I could drop 100k on education.
I’d spend that debt on cattle or stocks. That’s just me though. godspeed in your endeavors.
It was a tough decision to go back, but my company’s structure makes it a financially easy call. I’m pretty much guaranteed a 5 figure raise immediately upon receiving the Master’s, and then another 5 figure raise with the PhD. The PhD is also a requirement to become established in my field, and allow me to consult for an absurd amount if I ever get laid off.
It’s disheartening to know that no matter how hard I work and what I output, I can never advance past a certain point without advanced degrees. Thanks credentialism. On the other hand, the rules of the game are clearly defined so it’s easy to play if I put in the time and fees. I applied to my current program the week after my boss showed me HR’s payscales and how they are defined by years exp + degree.
It hasn’t really sunk in that it took a decade to pay back my debt.
I also only recently went into the “Postitive net worth” category. Not by much, mind you, but my assets exceed my liabilities right now.
My sister has two kids. The youngest is a junior in college, doing good, tops of her class, etc, etc. Perfect for her. The older would be a senior, but instead he went to work out of HS. Is doing HVAC work, just got a great job on rec of his HVAC professor, as he was top of his class in his schooling, just not college.
Two different people, two paths, both made the right choice for themselves.
Weird. I would have thought making an undergrad degree so common that it’s now required for janitorial work by subsidizing anyone with enough cognizance to sign their name to a FAFSA application would have resulted in no noticeable decline in quality of the graduates.
I was surprised it was The Atlantic, then i saw Bryan Caplan’s name.
for every 1 piece by someone like him, they print 2 dozen retarded things
The thing I’d say is that “college for all” winds up ruining college for everyone. A significant number of students simply don’t belong in college. I’m not saying that to degrade them, or dismiss them, or demean them. They just aren’t the sort of people who, intellectually, benefit from college. But, “college for all” winds up meaning that the college has to figure out something to do with them. So they wind up doing two things. The first thing they do is lower standards. That doesn’t just mean letting these people squeak by with Cs. It means restructuring the class so that they can credibly get Cs. In effect, it winds up remedial high school stuff. The second thing they do is create majors to accommodate them. Pretty much anything with “Studies” in the title isn’t a major that is being pursued for its analytical rigor. It’s a major for people who aren’t going to be able to hack it in either a STEM or a rigorous humanities.
I’m 48 and went to college for just 2 years (one of which was paid for by a Scholarship) following a stint in the USAF and then dropped out because I could see way back in 94 that it didn’t make financial sense to go another $30k in debt (on top of the $12k I took out to pay for year 2) so I could get a job that might pay $20k a year more than I could make right then.
Today because I decided to have kids instead of savings I don’t have any assets but I also don’t have a ton of debt and my income is well into the top 10%.
Red Queen’s race. Though I note he didn’t touch the third rail — that college degrees lets employers discriminate based on a vague notion of merit without fear of being sued for illegal discrimination.
Coffee with Bailey’s and Kahlua.
Umm… why add coffee licquour to coffee?
Extra coffee-ness?
Because I can.
Ups the ABV without a large impact on flavor?
The Kahlua has lower ABV than the Whiskey. I’m not convinced that a marginal increase in whiskey would have a great enough impact on flavor to be noticable, while it’s higher alcohol content would achieve the same aim.
There was no mention of whiskey being added, just liquors. And adding whiskey definitely has an impact on the flavor of coffee.
/remembers the time he got 3 Irish Coffees for free by naming the correct whiskey used in each.
I was misremembering the fact that Bailey’s was not straight whiskey, but debased with cream – to less than 20% ABV.
Yum.
I’ve never had a bad experience with Kahlua. Love that stuff.
I was drinking it neat some time last week. Couldn’t figure out why, but I finished off the last 125 mL.
And I don’t like coffee.
When I lived in Yuma, we used to go over to Mexico all the time to buy dirt-cheap Kahlua. You could get the big bottle for 8 bucks down there.
And The Mexican stuff’s got more alkyhol than the US stuff.
So regarding what I posted yesterday about the community organizing to outwork the county to grab a piece of land that was going to be used for a terrible purpose, I found this from the organizer. Dude’s my hero.
(blanked out the actual street/city names, because paranoid)
That’s beautiful, Juvie. Congratulations.
I didn’t do anything. I didn’t even know what was going on until I read the story.
But if I meet this guy, I want to buy him a beer and thank him.
Yes, you should. He sounds like a good guy.
Yep, you do not want a bus line near you, if possible. While it’s still the best public transit option (cost wise), it does tend to bring unsavory folks to the neighborhood.
I know we joke a lot about the “libertarian moment”, but it seems to me that we are in a “people in power are pieces of shit” moment. Do you think it’s confirmation bias on my part, or is there an actual mood of questioning authority happening? Or maybe we are just so polarized now that tiny vocal factions are attacking other tiny vocal factions? Discuss.
It’s that.
If the right TOP MEN (or TOP WOMEN, in this case) were in charge, Team Blue wouldn’t be questioning a damn thing.
If the wrong TOP MEN/WOMEN weren’t in charge for Team Red, they’d be screaming like Team Blue is right now.
We’re accustomed to authority. We seem to like it for some reason. (“We” referring to society in general)
Comfort. Most people do not want responsibility for their own lives. They’re morally weak and want to be ruled.
If anything leads to another travesty like the Nazi or Communist regimes of the 20th century, it will be identity politics. Victimhood as moral advantage enshrines the idea that weakness is desirable. That sense of weakness needs a sense of fear to justify itself. And that fear is what will doom us all,
Hoffer:
Very much this. Nazism and Communism justified themselves as supporting the weak (the people) against the strong (the Jews/the capitalists). Victimhood as a virtue can and does lead to very dark places, and the fact that so many do not realize this is dangerous. Heck, within living memory for the majority of people we have an example of this, as the Rwandan genocide was a victim group striking back at their oppressors. But I guess there’s truth to the saying that “there are none so blinds as those who will not see”.
“Hatred, malice, rudeness, intolerance, and suspicion are the fruits of weakness.”
Appropos of the Brooks retardation above, the meek shall inherit the earth.
There’s only slight recognition of that fact among most people. And what recognition does exist is made unimportant by the team dynamic.
Exhibit A
Trump’s been one of the more laissez-faire presidents in recent times, and the folks that like him seem to like him a lot. What’s happening is simply that one side has the media, big business, and mainstream pop culture on their side to amplify and generate outrage.
is there an actual mood of questioning authority happening?
No. Not at all. The resentment is concentrated on particular Top Men, not authority in and of itself. Bear in mind that the reason roughly 1/2 of the country hates Donald Trump is because he’s not authoritarian enough.
This, in a nutshell. Trump disrupted the Obama utopia by thwarting his unofficial “3rd term”. For many on the left, that is the original, irredeemable sin that must be resisted at all costs.
Regardless of whether or not this is some type of movement, I am really enjoying watching this shit storm. And maybe there are still some reasonable people out there who will become more cynical because of it.
If there actually was a “people in power are pieces of shit” moment, there would be far more distaste for somebody like GW Bush among the general public. That’s an example of a president that truly deserved the #resist movement. I still #resist him every day.
What’s that saying? The squeaky wheel gets the grease….
In someone’s mind, this passes for insightful.
“The Left can’t meme.”
It does provide insight into their mind.
To them a firearm is an unknowable primal force unearthed like something man was not meant to know and radiates a malign and corrupting influence from its mere presence.
It’s a fascinating pathology the creator has.
Is it from reading too much fantasy, where a sword isn’t just a sword, but a magic, anthropomorphic item?
i’m embarrassed to have that in my browser history.
You let your browser keep its history?
I don’t even understand that cartoon. The progression makes no sense to me.
It’s clearly a postapocalyptic tale where semi-sentient fungus has taken over after the NorKs nuked us. They unearth a still working revolver and go all Orky.
Is this really going to happen?

A golden comment from the article:
You see, inquiring “liberal”, the religion of “liberalism” is not liberal at all.
That’s partly why, at this point at least, I don’t find myself comfortable with the characterization of libertarianism as “economically conservative and socially liberal”. Today, in 2017, “liberals” wind up some of the worst blue noses out there. I’ve made jokes a bunch of times pointing out how I’m a lot more likely to have my social behavior restricted or punished by liberals than by conservatives. But, I make the joke because it’s mostly true. Now, I’ll grant that I’m saying this as a straight, white, male in New York City. So,, others’ experiences may vary. But, for non-libertarians, does “socially liberal” conjure up an image of people eager to let everyone live their own life? Or does it conjure up an image of a social justice warrior dictating everyone’s pronouns, decreeing all heterosexual sex rape, and insisting everyone avoid all culturally appropriative fun?
wdalasio, my take on why “liberals” are blue noses is that they’ve had the “Pure Puritan” streak in them for a long long time, going back to Woodrow Wilson’s progressivism (which allied with the Prohibition movement). There is a significant portion of people on the left who are essentially, Kyle’s Mom from South Park.
I was decades away from existing in the 60s and 70s, but it’s around that period of time where the left got its undeserved reputation as “social liberals”. A lot of the more socially conservative folks that I read from time to time think that a major reason for the sudden obsession with sexual misconduct on the left is because of them realizing the consequences of using the Sexual Revolution to disturb the social and moral fabric and transform society in their image. It’s only when the “age of the wimmenz” is reaching its peak do they suddenly realize that their transformed society was (in many ways) not so great for women.
^ true dat
have not heard term ‘blue noses’ for years.
i’ve always thought that the US, even though many people have basically abandoned their familial, historical religious associations, in many ways still has “protestant vs. catholic” underlying-cultural-issues. at least in a ‘cultural/style’ way, not a theological one.
A lot of the progressive left still has the outlines of the ‘womens temperance league’ type stuff. moral crusades give them a sense of assumed-authority, which is really what its about far more than the ‘public morality’ part. and the reason for their crusade is really just about maintaining cultural dominance over the poor and immigrants, and pretending that they are the gatekeepers of society.
Some amusement in this link for you.
http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2014/11/talking-tough-martin-luthers-potty-mouth/
And another of my reasons for becoming more libertarian was reading John M. Barry’s biography of Roger Williams (who is a distant ancestor), and seeing the interactions between Williams, the Puritans, and the Church of England. There is really not that much of a view point difference between the Puritans that disdained Roger Williams and Progressives that disdain Libertarians.
I don’t find myself comfortable with the characterization of libertarianism as “economically conservative and socially liberal”
Me neither, for a different reason though.
As far as I can tell, people who describe themselves that way never, ever oppose any expansion of the state that is proposed by leftists. Whenever “socially liberal” comes in conflict with “economically conservative” (as it often does in our Total State, where “socially liberal” means new regulations and spending), they always, always support the “socially liberal” expansion of the state.
I describe myself that way, and I oppose the expansion of the state that is proposed by leftists.
“Socially liberal” is the opposite of “socially conservative”. Not that I oppose people voluntarily practicing socially conservative values, it’s not the government’s job to enforce morality or culture.
But, like I say above, is “socially liberal” really the right way to describe your outlook? I mean, as things stand, now, today, liberals believe in pushing a very stringent program of social rules and controls on personal behavior. It’s the liberals who are giving us campus speech codes. It’s the liberals who are trying to equate sex and rape and seeking to undermine due process to deal with it. It’s the liberals who are pushing the “trafficking” narrative. It’s the liberals essentially pushing cultural purity with their “appropriation” nonsense. As things stand today, I’ve seen more live-and-let-live attitudes from social conservatives than liberals.
They might call themselves liberals but they aren’t liberal. They are illiberal. Those people giving us campus speech codes, trying to equate sex and rape and seeking to undermine due process, pushing cultural purity with their “appropriation” nonsense, etc. are progressives. And their desire to use the government to try to socially engineer things goes back to the beginning of the 20th Century. But that doesn’t excuse social conservatives (eg. the “religious right”) trying to use the government to prohibit consensual behaviors they didn’t like.
Social Marxist =/= to Social Liberal.
When I’m asked, I’ll usually say that I’m an outspoken advocate of personal and economic freedom.
If they want more than that they can query me on specific views and criticisms I have of the status quo. I don’t think that categorizing myself in terms of endlessly fluid language that I don’t even control the meaning of is particularly fruitful.
That strikes me as just another side of the same coin. The “socially liberal” they’re describing isn’t anything to what libertarians mean when they try to use “socially liberal” to describe themselves.
Exactly. That’s why I say civil libertarian instead.
To be economically conservative is enough. Giving a flying fuck about society is extremely wasteful.

Certainly possible, although not known either way at this time.

Heh – Probably.

This sort of “we” and “our” talk sets my teeth on edge. At least they put their money where their mouths were, instead of trying to use the government as a cudgel to derail the thing, but in all likelihood that was purely because it was the county’s project. A private developer might have found himself the victim of citizen activists working hand in hand with the county.

How brave of her. Except I know what really went down.
A relaxed, gentle, and stupid as fuck black kid from the wrong side of town thought he could get his massage license, and that if the milfy white lady who kept asking for him as her therapist wanted to indulge herself with him, that it would be cool. Then her husband found out, and like white women throughout the South have been doing for fucking centuries when their husbands catch them fucking the black guys, they cry rape. Tale as old as fucking time.
Now she’s cashing in, and that guys in prison till 2021 and when he gets out will be a registered sex offender. 100 years ago he would have just been lynched. Guess we can call that progress.
Didn’t know you were another Richmond guy here.
I don’t know anything more about that story than what was made public, but it always sounded pretty suspect to me, so I’m not surprised by what you’ve said.
Is it any surprise that college professors and “educational establishment professionals” don’t want kids reading “To Kill a Mockingbird” any longer?
Bitch is now cashing in. Fucking disgusting. This, BTW, shows you the utter moral bankruptcy of your average prog. She’s got all kinds of stuff on her VCU bio about working with poor black communities, but she sent a young black man who worked his way out of the ghetto to prison so she could save her own skin, and she’s now getting fat checks as a MeToo expert.
There’s not fucking justice in this world.
Thanks for that info, Viking. I had thought she seemed a bit too eager to help Massage Envy redo their policies after what should have been a traumatic experience.
Exactly. I understand that everyone reacts to trauma in their own way, but this woman acts like she’s a contestant on The Price Is Right.
Hadn’t heard of this case, but yes, that stinks of regrets to me.
And she’s a twitter attention whore.
Holy shit the cunt retweeted something about “we don’t serve blacks at the lunch counter”
Bitch, you sent a young black man to prison because you got caught getting a bonus rubdown. Fuck you.
Yep. And now she has the victim cred she so obviously envied.
From the comments:
But if we held government to that same standard there’d be ANARCHY!

I did not see that one coming.
Now, let’s see if Merkel can do the same trick.
. . . of course, she’s on the other side of the alt-right worldwide revolution.
Soave actually makes a good point on twitter
Right through the election, pro-Hillary folks were still listing her persuading Obama to get involved in Libya as one of her great accomplishments.

Yes. “Socially liberal” seems to align much more closely with “eager to expand the panoply of positive rights granted and enforced by government” than with, “let’s just leave people the fuck alone.”
I read that the left got its undeserved reputation as “social liberals” around the 60s and 70s, mainly via the anti-Vietnam War movement and the Sexual Revolution. I explained this above, but a lot of the more socially conservative folks that I read and listen to sometimes think that a major reason for the sudden obsession with sexual misconduct on the left is because of them realizing the consequences of using the Sexual Revolution to disturb the social and moral fabric and transform society in their image. It’s only when the “age of the wimmenz” is reaching its peak do they suddenly realize that their transformed society was (in many ways) not so great for women, which is why you’re seeing such a reactionary swing right now to try to write up some new social and moral rules in a chaotic form of cover-up.
This is rich:
I wonder if she is also going to explain why he signed his future assistant’s initials as well?
But she’s still totally “Credible”.
Wow….you’ve got to be kidding me. And the press will keep tugging on their chins, mystified as to why a huge chunk of the public wouldn’t believe them if they said the sky is blue.
The polls in the race are pretty tight, but I think that Moore will probably win convincingly if Google Trends has it down correctly. I’ve begun to trust these Google search numbers a lot more than polls to determine the trends of contests. A comparison between “vote moore” and “vote jones” within Alabama has Moore leading 56-44. Conservative-leaning issues, like crime, immigration, and abortion combine to make up the majority of the top searched issues in the past week (though healthcare has a plurality).
It’s Ala-fuckin-bama. If the Dems had run a Zell Miller type moderate-to-conservative guy, he’d walk away with this. Instead, they run a guy whose abortion position would be radical in NY, let alone Bama.
Zell Miller is an extinct species in the Democratic Party, and would be a Republican if he was still in politics today. I believe that Alabama’s other current senator, Richard Shelby, actually was elected as a Democrat and was a Democrat for 30 years before he switched parties in the middle of his Senate tenure.
Well, not Zell Miller exactly, but someone who isn’t a partial-birth abortion cheerleader, at least. A Joe Manchin type, maybe?
Yeah, Shelby flipped parties after the 1994 GOP wave election.
A Manchin-type wouldn’t cut it because he isn’t pro-gun enough and votes with his party on all important votes. A John Bel Edwards/Scott Brown-type of politician, OTOH, would have a fighting chance vs. an opponent with a questionable past like Moore, because they would be smart enough to side against their party when it actually counts, like the tax bill.
Even easier win with a Sam Nunn type, but I am pretty sure they are extinct in the D party also.
A quick Google didn’t turn up any Roy Moore signatures from 1977 or thereabouts. I’d be curious to compare contemporaneous signatures. Since he was a deputy district attorney in late 1977, I’d be interested to see if he was in the habit of signing “D.A.” after his signature (the reply being made to the observation that the D.A. was his assistant’s initials and she put them down when she was signing on his behalf).
Moore may be an asshole, but the complete prog demoralization caused by a Moore victory will be a thing to behold.
Also, note that he’s the right type of asshole to represent Alabama. Social conservatism remains king there.
In someone’s mind, this passes for insightful.

a major reason for the sudden obsession with sexual misconduct on the left is because of them realizing the consequences of using the Sexual Revolution to disturb the social and moral fabric and transform society in their image.
It’s more of their whirling disease. They blather about their completely phony dedication to GRRRRL Power while simultaneously whining about how those mean boys won’t let them in the He-Man Woman Haters Club tree house.
realizing the consequences
No chance in hell.
Exactly. They have no principles and therefore are incapable of comprehending something like “consequences”. Al Franken simply cannot understand why something like this happened to him.
Mind you, Franken’s most popular schtick was making fun of seriously depressed people trying to grasp an ounce of self-esteem. I realize comedy is not pretty, but turning that into a recurring bit AND a movie (which unsurprisingly failed) is inhumane. Seeking public office isn’t repentance, it is doubling-down.
“These are your white allies on Facebook
Social media conversations on race typically take one of two routes.
The first, and the one less traveled, leads to a thoughtful, fact-driven exchange of ideas. The second (more popular) route leads to bitter back-and-forth filled with tired stereotypes or racially inflammatory barbs.
But now, when discussion swerves in the second direction, there’s a group of white allies prepared to do the rerouting.
White Nonsense Roundup is a social media watchdog group with about 100 white volunteers. Its goal: to relieve people of color from the emotional labor of engaging with a person’s racist or racially insensitive thoughts.
Say, a person of color makes a post about Black Lives Matter. Then others respond with ignorant or offensive comments. That person can tag White Nonsense RoundUp to snatch some edges — or, better put, to educate people with context and fact-based views.
Think of it like roadside assistance for social media debates you’re tired of having.”

“Emotional labor” – A trigger phrase that causes me to immediately discount whatever pretense of credibility the speaker had.
Good thing for those white saviors to help those poor darkies from having to formulate their own arguments and ideas. The white man’s burden grows heavier by the day.
New tools to shut up inconvenient opposition!

Daily Derp for the Day from my wife’s acquaintance on FB:
..”also can we please get the “innocent until proven guilty” rhetoric OUT of discussions about rape? because how the frick do you prove a rape? how? the nature of the crime is so personal that’s it’s almost impossible to “prove”. We have to start believing survivors. Less than 2% of rape accusations are false. The survivor stands to gain NOTHING by coming forward. Except for harassment, intimidation and lies told about them. When someone speaks up, it is a very scary thing to do. Let’s BELIEVE THEM.”
Like what in the fuck is wrong with these people? Don’t they know that by doing crap like this they are creating a path towards totalitarianism?
If it’s impossible to prove, how do you know those are true allegations?
First, it’s still “Accuser”, second, the mere accusation of rape is sufficent to destroy the life of the accused, even if nothing comes of it, so if they simply wanted to hurt the accused, that’s a damn good way to do it.
I wanted to write that the guys who killed Emmitt Till and burned Rosewood, FL in the 20’s had the same view point. But I knew that it would cause a shit storm.
I wanted to write that the guys who killed Emmitt Till and burned Rosewood, FL in the 20’s had the same view point.
You could tell her that it’s good that she’s not a rape apologist like that bastard Atticus Finch.
It’s sadly amazing the kind of ideas people can get into their heads. I’m sure your wife’s friend is a very nice person. But, reading that drivel, I can see the sort of mentality that would allow people to support the most unjust monstrosities. And they wouldn’t even understand after it happened.
My wife hates her. I wife leans pretty liberal and even thinks that she;s a moron but has to stay polite because they run the same circles.
* My wife leans pretty liberal…
I thought you’d gotten a prerelease copy of the new Apple Gynoid, the iWife.
So much for trying to think the best of everyone.
But, I think my point still stands. This is the sort of thinking that leads to, as you say, totalitarianism, but also the worst sorts of atrocities humanity has ever seen. Maybe the right response is to simply ask her exactly what she’d say to one of the “2%” (I use quotes because that is a made up number. Every actual study shows much higher incidence.) of guys falsely accused. “Oh, sorry”?
And she’s not a nice person. She’s an over credentialed c-word that would be the perfect fit something like the Cultural Revolution.
As I said, so much for trying to think the best of everyone.
I try to have that mind frame too. I don’t want to think of every one who disagrees with me as a totalitarian asshole because they aren’t. Like I said above, my wife is a Leftist, but never at one time thought that she was a horrible person. Her acquaintance though after you talk or debate with her will tell you flat out that if it brings her the desired outcomes, she’s not going to lose any sleep if a couple of innocent people get screwed over by the process.
will tell you flat out that if it brings her the desired outcomes, she’s not going to lose any sleep if a couple of innocent people get screwed over by the process.
So, basically, she’s out-and-out evil. Well, I guess there’s something to be said about being open about it.
First, it’s still “Accuser”
And, if proved, it’s “victim” (legitimately). Unless it was rape and attempted murder.
Rape, reported as soon as it happens, is a very provable. Easily so with DNA evidence.
No, sex is very provable. Consent is always a question of credibility, although it goes up a lot depending on corroborating evidence like evidence of physical or chemical violence, or if the accused is a stranger or has had other similar accusations against them.
But if you wait a few decades…
I posted above about how a “stunningly brave woman” is reaping the rewards of her alleged victimhood. Makes my blood boil.
I saw your post. That really is fucking horrifying.
can we please get the “innocent until proven guilty” rhetoric OUT of discussions about rape
No. Anything else?
the nature of the crime is so personal that’s it’s almost impossible to “prove”
Its actually not. Forcible rape is easy to prove, if you go to the ED immediately, where your injuries will be documented, an evidentiary rape kit will be used, etc.
Now, “rapes” that happened months or years before you report them are hard to prove, yes. Because you waited to report them.
Non-forcible rape is also hard to prove, granted. But rape prosecutions still manage to be mostly successful, so apparently it is possible to prove them.
Don’t they know that by doing crap like this they are creating a path towards totalitarianism?
Some of them, yes. They just see themselves in charge.
“because how the frick do you prove a rape? how?”
The last time I heard that it was the official statement of the Harvey, IL police department.
Holy shit – every single day someone else from Mueller’s investigation is shown to be a Hillary stooge.
More like a SF stooge.
That makes three in the last day – I don’t know what the hell is wrong with me lately.
Talked about it yesterday – at this point, they’ll never get a conviction in court. Discovery would reveal even more dirt. Then a defense attorney would destroy their credibility so thoroughly a jury would never believe a word of the prosecution.
If I’m Flynn, I’d be thinking very seriously now about withdrawing my plea, if the crucial evidence against me is notes taken by compromised FBI investigators. They never record those interrogations, a policy which is indefensible and IMO should bite them in the ass. If any crucial piece of evidence comes down to the word of an FBI investigator who is compromised, let’s take it to a jury, attack the entire investigation, and see where it goes. The FBI might be very reluctant to expose itself to being cross-examined in open court about the conduct of the investigation.
If one of the things to come out of this is that the FBI is required to record their interactions with people, that would almost make it all worth it.
If one of the things to come out of this is that the FBI is
required to record their interactions with peoplegutted and reformed as a much smaller agency with a tightly limited mandate subject to stringent oversight, that would almost make it all worth it.The crucial evidence is an interview conducted by Strzok.
The problem is that there are other things they could use against him, not just “lying to the FBI”. And against his family. You’ll note that they went after Flynn’s son, Bernie Sander’s wife, and are allegedly going after Trump’s son-in-law. They know that, for decent people, family is a weak spot and they can get more compliance that way.
Yeah, but, jurors are morons.
Lemme help you out, Chip:
Mueller’s ‘Right-Hand Man’ on Russia Probe Represented Clinton IT Aide Who Set Up Unsecure Server
Bonus link:
Robert Mueller Team: Nine Donated to Hillary or Democrats
Consider that a special counsel is appointed precisely to avoid any hint of political influence. In that context, any attorney who had donated to or worked for any political campaign should have been disqualified, period, full stop. Any attorney who had worked for any political organization should have been disqualified, full stop.
If Trump is really stringing this out, letting the FBI and DOJ operate essentially without any effective oversight, just letting them be them, in order to set them up for a fall, and actually is building a case against them behind the scenes to spring on them at an opportune moment, I will be very impressed.
Weissmann also hung out at Hillary’s election night party.
I think that’s exactly what he’s doing. Shutting Mueller down would be playing into the Dems hands, because then they can shriek COVER UP!!!!
Remember, the FBI (and god knows what other agencies) were using the full power of the American surveillance apparatus on Trump’s campaign from at least the moment he clinched the nomination, and probably before. If there was actual evidence of Russian collusion, they would have used it in late October to ensure Hillary Clinton’s election. They did not, because it doesn’t exist.
The Russian collusion allegations were used to give a fig leaf for the FISA warrant, and after Trump won, they have been trying to make their lie true.
Mueller and his crew of progs are basically OJ promising he’s gonna find the real killer.
