Don Swissxote checking in on Catalonia… Hmmm. Looks like another vote. When last we left this mess, the former Catalan Regional President, Carles Puigdemont, had fled to Belgium, to avoid the fate of other members of the regional government – imprisonment (which didn’t stop campaigning. *Chicago area politicians perk up*). Note, however, that the international warrant for Puigdemont was withdrawn (should he go back to Spain, I have no doubts the handcuffs would be on him in seconds).
The scenarios for post-vote Catalonia are numerous. I will glibly lay out what they are:
- On the one hand, voters have been scared off from independence – by the use of force by Madrid (cops beating down people voting in the October referendum) or the number of business HQ’s fleeing Barcelona, or having second thoughts about being wholly responsible for themselves (in a national sense) now. So, they end up with MILFy Ines Arrimadas in charge….the independence movement returns to Quebec or Scotland levels of annoying/festering.
- On the other hand, independence favoring parties win small – but squabble while trying to form a coalition to govern, and accomplish little to nothing before collapsing and needing new elections (see post-war Italian and Belgian governments). Being the cynical SOB that I am, I think this will end up happening… and the sound of cans being kicked down the road will echo for years.
- Or, on the gripping hand, independence parties end up winning bigger – people get a case of the “fuck off, slaver” and one of the three independence parties gets enough of a mandate to lead a coalition….from exile, from jail or in Socialist person. Madrid would again suspend the regional government, send in the coppers and we would reach a decision point… give up under the force employed? Turn into a Basque style guerrilla type conflict? Start Civil War 2.0?
As a libertarian type, I want force avoided. But, it ain’t my country/language/culture/self-determination at stake. I am not ready to go off and join the Reconstituted Abraham Lincoln Brigade as of yet. But this will be worth watching one way or the other.

I want to see Spain break up.
I also want to see the EU break up.
I suppose I just want smaller Eurostates.
Breaking up is hard to do.
However, *narrows gaze* is easy.
Much of Eastern Europe is ready to leave.
They could just make their own customs union, screw the rest of the crap that comes with the EU.
Maybe Austria and Hungary can get the old band back together.
The Hapsburgs shall rule again!
Sure, why not? They’re still around.
For what it’s worth, his daughter isn’t hard on the eyes.
MILFy? I must be getting old – she looks too young to be MILFy.
Still, ILFy.
She’s in her 30s, whatever that says for the rest of the evaluation.
Personally I say that’s too young for the M.
Wait…you think women in their 30s are too young to be mothers?
If you go by that metric, then teens could count.
A true MILF range should be old enough to have effectively grown children – ie, 40s-50s
I believe MILF originated with teenage boys lusting after their friends mothers. So 15 plus early 20’s gets you into the upper 30’s as MILF territory.

I am asking for a friend, mind you…
What’s the GILF range?
I don’t know. Maybe I’m not that old yet.
This.
My thoughts exactly, who are you? So wise in Womenly matters?
“MILFy Ines Arrimadas”
She’s hot, but stupid. She represents the ‘Citizens’ party, but they don’t seem interested in letting their citizens decide their own future.
*Ears perk up*
Does she also have a history of making bad decisions?
back off I saw her first!
We don’t call dibs here. If you want us to back off, you piss on her shoes and mark your damn territory.
the girls at the next glibs meetup better be wearing boots… or sandals (HEYOOO!!)
She’s a progressive politician, so yes, plenty of bad decisions.
“Ciudadanos, a centrist anti-independence party formed in 2006”
mmm…not sure if “progressive” works here. If she wins, that would mean the majority want to stay in Spain, and she would be representing the citizens. If she loses, then she ain’t in a position to obstruct the citizenry’s wishes, right?
From Wikipedia:
Seems they are all over the place, but they gave themselves the progressive label, so who knows. In any case, as a politician, I have no doubt that she’s perfectly capable of subverting the will of the people.
Oh, every politician is perfectly capable of that….true.
Yeah and I heard she has daddy issues. Definite easy lay

In all honesty, the Swiss have the right idea in Europe: decentralized government and treaties with the EU allowing for the movement of goods and people without being locked into a byzantine bureaucracy being managed out of Brussels.
Also, cat butt pictures account for five percent of their GDP, so that’s cool too
And the EU has been pressing the Swiss, hard, to bend the knee on certain movement of people provisions…. in other words, take a shitload of “refugees”. A referendum that forces a law in place, soon, counters that. CONFLICT A COMIN’!

If they leave will they still recognize the king as monarch? Or could it mean a denouncement of monarchy in Europe?
Good point…lemme go look.
From what I can see, they would not recognize the King as their monarch.
OH NO YOU DON’T!
He’s the Most Interesting King in the World.
They could trace back to the ruling family when Catalonia was an independent principality. Which would place a Hapsburg on their throne, as opposed to a Bourbon, the family that occupies the Spanish royalty at the moment.
Or they could go with “Fuck monarchy – self determination, bitches!”
Figurehead monarchies are good for tourism… “Oh, look, the palace!” “Ah, changing of the Royal Guards!”
You can have those things without the monarch.
“The changing of the Royale Guard? did we go to one of these knock-off countries again?”
“We could always go see the National Pal Ace.”
“It’s apparently his day off.”
The Royale Guard with cheese?
Tourism seems like an odd reason for selecting a constitutional form.
Some countries base their entire economy around it.

Did I do it right, Swiss???
Ja.
Culturally appropriating Swiss treads dangerously close to a cat butting
If it is a purely Swiss matter, it is a Swiss Brown Cowbutting.
Like this:
1: That cow looks emaciated.
2: You must have an odd search history.
Mrs. Swiss: Why is your computer all full of cat butts
Swiss: Well, you see, I cat butt people…and
Mrs. Swiss: Is this what your into? Do cat butts turn you on?
Swiss: No, you don’t get it- look I got cow butts too
Mrs. Swiss: I don’t even know you anymore
Swiss: I should cat butt you for that remark
1. Swiss Browns are odd looking critters – that one is not emaciated.
2. Not compared to the link history after clicking a few HM links.

The problem that CNN, BBC, et al have is in decrying the Rohinyga situation without completely dumping on Aung San Suu Kyi.
Really? I was surprised at just how quickly they turned on her. There is nothing the media loves more than a “man bites dog” story.
You may be right: I haven’t updated my info in a couple of months.
I was just talking to a co-worker and I realized that Trump governs the country the same way I run my personal life. If I need to do something I do it, and I don’t give a shit what people think about it. When I need to say something I say it, and it’s usually pretty rough language. When people ask me if to do something stupid, I flip them the bird.
I find this both refreshing and scary at the same time.
That’s why I voted for him. Politicians all want to be likable, their job depends on people liking them hence their positions are selected by what the public likes. This is why there are few politicians who have fixed positions let alone static principles. How many CEOs do you know who are really ‘likable’? Their job is to get things done, nobody cares how likable they are provided 1) it doesn’t interfere with getting things done and 2) the things they are doing are making money for the shareholders. I think trump made it pretty clear during the campaign that he was going to do business and not politics, i.e. do what needs doing whether or not the people like it. That makes it pretty easy to personally deliver on your campaign promises.
There’s a pretty big overlap between CEOs and psychopaths.
If only because successful people are more likely to cheat and psychopaths are more likely to cheat, but I understand we’re glib here. There’s overlap between blacks and murderers.
Say this three times fast: The Rohingya are Roofin’ ya with Rohypnol.

HM, I think they went there a long time ago…
Perhaps. At this level, “stupid” and “evil” are distinctions without difference.
What’s with the scare tactic meme about “the corporate tax rate cut is permanent, but the individual rate cuts aren’t. Evil GOP.” Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t tax rates always subject to revision by the next Congress? Personally, I’d love it if the 1913 tax rate had been “permanent.”
I prefer the 1912 rate.
I’d go for the 1912 tax rate being permanent.
It all boils down to “Donald Trump and other republicans are icky.” But they at least try to hide that behind some sort of excuse. This was the best excuse they could come up with.
It’s simple – since the bill is being passed via reconciliation, it must be deficit neutral within a ten-year period, thus the individual cuts go away after four years. It’s the same silly dance that was done to pass Obamacare, when the tax increases started four years before the expenditures commenced.
what’s brilliant is the personal cuts expire after Trump’s second term. his successor better get some bipartisan reforms on the docket and fast or they are fucked at the polls.

Regardless of the bullshit in his non-pology, I think the bigger issue is how the hell does PuffHo’s soi-disant “Political and Pop Culture Analyst” not recognize one of the three African-Americans in the Senate?
I guess we do all look alike.
There’s Tim Scott and Corey Booker. Not to sound dumb, though I am, but who is the third?
Kamala Harris, if you count folks like her and me in the “club”.
Regardless, your point is well taken. There are only 100 senators and if you are suppose to be covering politics you should at least know the most prominent members of both parties and I would consider Tim Scott to be pretty prominent. Considering that he helped craft this bill and he has a close association with Nikki Haley and the strong stance that both he and Haley took against Trump during the primaries
Kamela Harris
Never mind

Even more than that, he was one of the Senators most involved in pushing the act through.
Typical white liberal racism that is widely accepted by our culture
“As a libertarian type, I want force avoided”
I never understood this argument. Libertarianism isn’t a force-avoidance philosophy. Liberty is never granted, it’s taken. “We want our liberty and we will force you to leave us alone.”
Puigdemont isn’t a “give me liberty or give me death type”, otherwise he’d risk the arrest to gin up support. Catalonia will never gain independence from Spain without some sort of forceful revolution because Spain is far too happy to use force.
I prefer a peaceful resolution – if the Catalans want independence, Madrid should let them go, and not employ force to keep them in the Kingdom. If the Catalans say no to independence, I don’t want the minority to employ violence against them.
I don’t cheer on violence for its own sake. If the majority of Catalans do want independence, they have every right to seek it forcefully. I just don’t want innocent people killed, property destroyed, etc.
I just don’t want innocent people killed, property destroyed, gold lost, artwork burned….
…orphans slaughtered, monocles smashed, titty mags destroyed…
Gold has gotten “lost” before, you know…
I think that Madrid has already shown that they have no intention of letting Catalonia go peacefully; so if a majority wants it and is will to do what is necessary to obtain it, there will be violence. What level of violence that is, from terrorist-type IRA tactics to full-blown Civil War who knows? I hope that doesn’t happen either…
But – who is “majority of Catalans”?
People who live there? That would include Castillians, Aragonese and Muslim immigrants but not Catalans living in Madrid.
People who speak Catalan? Now you have the opposite problem.
So what happens if majority (say, 54%) of Catalan speakers want out, but aren’t a majority in terms of entire population (the Quebec situation)? Run referendums for twenty years till they get one through, then never again? Call it done and tell them to knock it off? Or just status quo with no resolution?
Headline I just saw on google news:
“Defying Trump, UN General Assembly Condemns US Decree on Jerusalem” -NYT
Why don’t they “defy Trump” in a truly meaningful way, by voting to pull out of New York? That’ll teach us.
The purpose of the General assembly is to pass meaningless resolutions and skim a little off the top of the budget.
mild-edit
You mean skim most of it off the top, right?
I think the bigger issue is how the hell does PuffHo’s soi-disant “Political and Pop Culture Analyst” not recognize one of the three African-Americans in the Senate?
It’s the Racist Party. Why would anybody think there are black Republicans?

There is a reason the left likes to accuse the other side of being racists.. It comes down to the same reason they accuse the other side of all sorts of untoward behavior: projection…

Right. And needlessly escalating a stand-off by using force is not always the best response (see Syria, Iraq, and Libya)
This is the main thing, IMO. The US shouldn’t take any action involving the use of force without Seoul’s buy-in. But sometimes a strategic use of force is necessary to smack down belligerence and doesn’t lead to further escalation (such as when the US destroyed a large portion of the Iranian navy in 1988), so if the South Koreans decide it’s a good idea I think the US should go for it.

Ah, the time before the “pace of the game” rules were put in place.
Catholic funerals, along with the honor guard from the local VFW hall, made for one very long funeral. But at least the lunch (and many, many desserts) were excellent.
Catholics, no offense to anyone here, are uh weird to my CRC eyes. Very archaic. And based one some of the history I’ve read/watched, I can see many historical connections. At least to these old atheist eyes.
“are uh weird”
So you are a Calvinist, but you think Catholics are the strange ones?
Kidding aside, most Catholic ceremonies are much much longer than other Christian denominations. My friend who is Prebyterian and stood-up in my wedding was surprised how long it went on for, because his wedding only took ten minutes.
I’m not a Calvinist but yes, I was raised CRC. But even when I was young I went huh? on the whole Calvinism thing.
Huh. Maybe the churches I went to were outliers, but I always preferred going to mass with my Catholic grandmother over going to church with my Methodist parents because it was shorter. The Catholic weddings and funerals I’ve been to were also shorter than the Methodist counterparts.
Plus there were things to do; sit down, stand up, kneel, shake hands and pretend you like the people next to you, kneel again, stand, sit back down. Grams was also fond of night service, when I want as hyper. Much easier to sit through as an active boy than sitting down and being quiet for two hours on a sunny Sunday morning.
Hmmm… I’ll have to plead ignorance on this point then. I’ve never been to a Methodist service, but all the other Protestant services I’ve been to have been much shorter. I guess I’m wrong
Our churches may have been unusual, like I said. Mass wss usually over in about 30 to 45 minutes, whereas the sermon alone from the Methodist church was usually around that long. Pretty sure my pastor was just long winded.
Swissy, you said you’re Methodist, how long are your services on average?
We go 60-65 minutes usually. Our music people are a little overboard.
Growing up…oy. 90 minutes…the Reverend Doctor William Cull was a … lengthy speaker.
Sounds about right. Usually about an hour and a half, less than an hour when we had a guest pastor.
I don’t know what you lot are complaining about. At least you have pews.
We have to sit cross-legged on the floor!
The liturgical portion is shorter at protestant services.
The sermon portion is VASTLY LONGER at protestant services.
The music is better on an average day at protestant services.
The hymns were better at the Methodist church, which they should be given how important music was to the founders of it, but they only had a piano while the Catholic church had a kick ass pipe organ that took up half the church, so kind of a wash.
My grandmother’s church (see below) had a massive pipe organ. My aunt was the organist. It was awesome.
At my grandmother’s Methodist church, they sang all the verses for all the hymns. It was my favorite part. (Music/band geek.)
Aye, same for my Methodist church growing up. Which was fine, I liked that part, it was trying to sit through the interminable sermon that was hard.
The length of the ‘homily’ (we don’t call it a sermon) at a Catholic mass is dependent upon the priest presiding over the mass. All homilies at any given Catholic church on a particular Sunday always have the same theme, but how long the priest wants to talk is up to him. The typical Catholic mass (at least all the ones I’ve ever been to) range between 45 minutes to an hour and a half. A lot of that depends on how many congregants there are and how long it takes to distribute the Eucharist
Around my house figuring out which priest is conducting which service is vitally important in planning the weekend.
If a poor choice is made, the length of the homily is capable of ruining a weekend’s careful scheduling.
We always had a small number of attendants, so the Eucharist was always distributed quickly.
Baptisms and other fun ceremonies can tack on an extra half to a full hour.
Yeah and Easter vigil is four hours long, but you are not obligated to attend that
The sermon portion is VASTLY LONGER at protestant services.
The sermon/homily and the readings were really the only part of any religious service I really felt wasn’t a waste of time, honestly. Catholic homilies were okay. It tended to vary a lot with the priest. I’ve found Unitarians can be okay, but they tend toward an awful lot of SJW hectoring and patting themselves on the back. I’ve generally liked the Presbyterian sermons a little more. The ones I’ve heard always seemed to take a more cerebral note.
Also, most Catholic Churches have moved away from the era known as ‘beige Catholicism’ in the 70’s and 80’s when they were allowing more contemporary hymns to be sung at Church. For the most part the hymns used at services are more based on organs and not so much more modern instruments
Yeah, Mass is full of needless ceremony. The best one I’ve been to the priest sounded like an auctioneer. Whole thing was done in 28 minutes.
The needless ceremony is the point! The hymns are the part that can get cut.
That’s the part I’m referring to.
Some people like the hymns.
The Catholic church I went to had enough masses that there were some express masses and some with more folderol so they covered the market as it were. The biggest time sink is the Eucharist when the mass is packed to the gills. If I were in charge I’d put the wafers in with the collection basket – take a wafer and toss in a buck or two – plus it discourages the freeloaders who come for the Eucharist but chintz out on the collection.
The ceremony of the Eucharist is the entire point of the mass, the original ceremony. If you like hymns, join a roving choir group.
Never liked them. Being that nobody around me is singing either, its not an unpopular opinion.
As long as they use real hymns and not the Marty Haugen-influenced shit.
Heh. Apparently the widespread US practice of lay people distributing the Eucharist isn’t exactly kosher either.
It is if they are ordained as Eucharistic ministers, but only a priest can consecrate the host
“Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion” is ordained as in a Bishop, Priest or Deacon. “Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion” are laity who may assist in special and rare circumstances.

If you must go and want precise length services , attend a large church that has problematic parking and multiple services. Go to the first one of the day and the pastor will step quickly through it in order to clear the parking lot before the next service.
Glad you and yours got through it ok. Always sucks when it is someone you love.
The archaic nature always appealed to me. I go to Lutheran services now because my Lutheran wife is anti-Catholic enough to make a Klansman blush, specifically the “contemporary service” which is mostly Christian pop songs plus a sermon and occasionally communion. I’ve always been vaguely uncomfortable with this – it just is so saccharine to me. I much prefer the traditional Lutheran service, which is much closer to a Catholic mass and has that sweet pipe organ, but we almost never attend that one.
The Latin Mass, which more churches are re-embracing, is the real deal
Agreed. I wish we had a church nearby that offered it.
Those churches are hardcore. There’s a breakaway Catholic Church (Society of St. Pius) not too far from where I live. My wife won’t go to mass there, because they are not officially part of the Church, but those guys do the pre-Vatican II Latin Mass with the priest facing away from the congregation.
That’s the only way to go if you want lapsed Christians and atheists in your flock. Nattering about social justice isn’t the USP of the Catholic Church – 2000 years (give or take) of tradition, including about 1000 of those years as a central location for any intellectual development in Western Europe are.
I’m one hundred percent serious when I say (being an atheist), only church I’d attend would have to be like this.
That’s the debate. The traditionalists echo the words of Cardinal George and Pope Benedict who insisted that a possibly smaller, but more pious church is the way forward. They always point to mainline Protestantism and its demise as an example that liberalism will only lead to ruin.
Does Latin Mass mean the whole thing, hymns, sermon, and all are done in Latin? I don’t quite see the point in a church service in a foreign (and effectively dead) language, but whatever floats your boat.
Fuck contemporary services. I want tradition that forces you to either contemplate the Divine or be bored out of your skull.
Self flagellation or GTFO.
Obligatory.
That’s how the priests in some Eastern Orthodox Churches dress. At my old parish we would invite an Eastern Orthodox priest to come celebrate Easter mass and he looked like the grim reaper coming up the aisle with the priest. Most Eastern Orthodox churches are hardcore too
I’d say there is more support for the traditionalists (or as the media dubs them the ‘conservatives’) within the Church than the liberals (despite Jesuit efforts). Ever since the Vatican started to allow local churches to offer the Latin Mass without a special dispensation from the Cardinal it has been growing.
Full disclosure, I was raised Presbyterian and, I believe that experience was a strong factor in laying the groundwork for understanding Natural Rights and the nature of Governments. Watching Jude Law as the Young Pope I couldn’t help agreeing that if the Catholic Church behaved like that it would be a net good to remind people that there is such a thing as moral law, or a system of law which is immutable and not open to interpretation. From there, at least you can begin a comparative analysis of systems or a search for the what is ‘good’.

Behold our Western European ‘allies’ who think they should dictate where we put our embassy, but scoff when we tell them that they should contribute more toward their own defense. Have at ’em, Russia!
(Note: I wasn’t even really supportive of this embassy move, but in no way should some half-assed and corrupt international body dictate our foreign affairs)
I don’t get Singapore going with this. You would think they would be against a country being told their self-determination doesn’t matter.
Notice that most Eastern European countries abstained, while Western European countries voted in favor of the resolution
The only entity giving the Arabs a run for their antisemitism are the Europeans..
And the Congressional Black Caucus
Good to see we have Micronesia on our side.
What are the ones that don’t have any mark next to them?
Absent, presumably. Their delegations probably had something better to do than attend a UN meeting.
Actual allies (Poland, Hungary, Canada, Romania etc) abstained. Western Europe aren’t allies.
Except possibly UK, but UK is not a member of the UN – The Foreign Office is.
Australia too.

Then, I blurted out what was in my heart: “I’d also like to . . . just say how insane it is that in the United States of America a civilian can go out and buy a semiautomatic weapon like an AR-15.” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) interrupted, warning this was not in my “area of responsibility or expertise.” Soon after, my confirmation was put on hold.
LOL
Good! Someone who thinks complying with the bill of rights is “insane” shouldn’t be given any position of responsibility in the U.S. government.
Well, fuck him
You mean, rejecting a policy cornerstone of the party currently in power ruined your chances of securing a cushy job with said party? UNPOSSIBLE!
LOLWUT?
I was a mere pizza-box marksman in the Marines, the lowest level of qualification, but I could still knock your ass down 7 or 8 out of 10 shots from the 500 yard line. The AR platform is plenty accurate beyond 100 yards. So shocking that an Air Force officer hasn’t the faintest fucking idea what he’s talking about when it comes to small arms! hahaha
I mean, hell, on the Marine rifle range you don’t even shoot at all from closer than 200 yards.
Not sure what qualifying ‘Expert’ in the M-9 would have been for the AF (given that it’s no longer required), but qualifying in rifle is currently:
35 hits will get you a ‘Small Arms Expert’ gong. Given the magazine sizes, I’m not sure that the long gun would be an M-16
Looks like it *is* an M-16. Do they even make mags that small? Other exciting fact I never realized – you need 20 hits to pass qualification.
50% on target is ‘good enough’. I guess they’re getting the recruits used to area-effect weapons.
The problem isn’t that he spoke his mind. It’s what he said.
Anyone who claims to have experience with guns and says that a 12 gauge shotgun is easier for “untrained” civilians to use for self defense than an AR-15 is an idiot.
Nothing against a 12 gauge, but the recoil difference alone means I’ll grab my AR every time over the shotgun.

Apologies if this was covered before: Congress trying to revive net neturality.

Not an expert so don’t ask me questions. Although it appears that part of the effort is to stop individual states from creating their own net neutrality rules.
I am reminded of something a frustrated chief petty officer once said about another department on our ship:
“Those idiots would fuck up getting laid in a Tijuana whorehouse”
So they’re bottoms?
Wow, this guy is getting dangerously close to being as big of an idiot as Obama.
