Greetings from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where SP and I are, in the great tradition of 4th of July weekend, fighting the traveling hordes in Winnebagos and Airstreams. There’s some sort of baseball tournament happening here, and our hotel is packed with hyperactive 11-13 year old boys. They had a farting contest on the elevator, which was fitting punctuation. But Links must go on, travel or no travel.
This was inevitable, wasn’t it? I keep wondering how to say “schadenfreude” in Yiddish.
OK, I’m not a fan of bubble-gum punk, but I have to admit that I now love this guy. Best. Apology. Ever.
Given the usual government attitudes about FOIA, it’s nice to see that they’re at least consistent, and treat other levels of government the same way as they treat us mere tax cattle.
I have always hated traveling to Las Vegas. It is everything I hate in a city, then multiplied by ten. But at least now, I have a way to numb the pain.
And in the holiday weekend theme… as we drove past a fireworks stand set up outside of a church, SP demonstrated yet another one of her considerable skills- she’s a walking encyclopedia of music. This song was inevitable. And brilliant.
And in the holiday weekend theme… as we drove past a fireworks stand set up outside of a church,
Fireworks tent collapse injures four people
That’s a legitimate First.
If fireworks weren’t actually involved, isn’t it just a tent collapse?
I heard one of the operators had a CCW on him. So the CDC will classify this as mass shooting incident since four people were hurt.
Well, they would have under the last administration.
“OK, I’m not a fan of bubble-gum punk, but I have to admit that I now love this guy. Best. Apology. Ever.”
I’ve hung out with him plenty of times. He’s the nicest guy.
I can’t believe that lovers of Punk got all bent out of shape over this incident. GG Allen is drinking piss in his grave.
Bite it, you scum.
You might as well put ” ” around punk. Because the shit that’s out now ain’t it.
Agreed. There are some exceptions out there, but most are not dangerous or pushing musical envelopes. I still like “fun” punk and Ska when I hear it, but the genre has been categorized and homogenized for 20 or more years.
Here is one of my recent likes
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2mV239VN1-U
That song made me miss Adam Yauch. Because this is the kind of project I could see him being associated with.
::pours out 40 oz::
Punk deserves its due credit in the history of western pop music, but I’m not sure how “dangerous” it ever was, and making bad music on purpose wasn’t really pushing musical boundaries as much as cultural ones.
Punkers in my school were (mostly) pussies as were *some* metal heads. It depended who.
The real nasty guys weren’t connected to music – or anything really.
You just stayed away from Crazy Martin and the *connected*.
Look at the fucking customers. First tweet from the article:
Excuse me, but what the fuck does allowed have to do with anything in punk rock?? Pathetic.
I’m pretty sure they’re acknowledging that the punk part of the music isn’t allowed at a corporately-sponsored roving music, skateboard and shoe-selling festival.
I’ll never forget the time when for a brief milli second in time there were some complaints about the ‘Nasty Show’ hosted by Bobby Slayton as being ‘racist’ and ‘vulgar’ during the ‘Just for laughs’ festival in Montreal.
Retards.
Bobby Slayton racist and vulgar? No way. You’d think something called “Nasty Show” would be a clue.
Aside, don’t sit in the front row at one of his shows. Although I did get a free Glenlivet for being a good sport about being part of the act.
Are black comics or other minorities ever called out for using stereotypes in their acts? Or is this another example of White Privilege?
+1 I love black people but…
I tried describing GG Allin to my wife the other day and she stopped me when I got to the part about him taking a shit on stage, smearing it all over himself and then running through the crowd.
I would think even an “night watchman state” would sic the night watch on him.
Kind of like this guy?
GG Allen was a real asshole, though.
I dig the unpology. Why would you pay money just to protest a band. Just enjoy yourselves for shit sake.
That is impossible for these people.
Jewsday Tuesday is on the Fourth of July, so does OMWC plan on discussing Haym Salomon?
TL;DR version: The Polish-born Salomon became a financier in New York City. He helped the Patriots until the city was occupied by the Brits. Then he pretended to help the Brits, but they caught him trying to get the Hessians to quit the British service. Sentenced to death, Salomon escaped to Philadelphia and had to make his fortune again from the ground up – he again helped the Revolutionary cause. He wrote a tract against anti-Semitism under the endearing pseudonym of “A Jew Broker.” He died indebted, apparently because he’d provided so much money to the patriot cause.
Played by Claude Rains in the 1939 short Sons of Liberty.
He could discuss Salomon, along with Isaac Franks, Washington’s aide-de-camp, and Francis Salvador.
Given the snub from Congress, who refused to pay back Salomon’s funding of the revolution, maybe a GoFundMe idea to erect the statue that was voted for (and never funded) would be in order.

Disney is revamping its “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride to replace a scene in which “wenches” are auctioned off to men as brides.”

See yesterday’s ZARDOZ lynx.
I almost never read those.
Anyway, it seems now that Disney pirates are opposite of actual pirates:

You really should check out last night’s Zardoz links, there was an extensive discussion about this.
I like redheads…
OK, fine, I read them. But that pic from 2014 pretty much explains it.
Sometimes I don’t think people understand the difference between depicting something in film or literature and condoning or encouraging it.
It’s always the same you cishetero shit lord. Unless the right people do it. Then it’s acceptable.
That was my favorite ride in Disney world when I went there ad a kid. I don’t even remember the wenches scene.
Finally! I’ve been at work frantically refreshing waiting for some links/excitement.
I hope you were doing that in the bathroom.
Boss’ office
There might be something interesting coming up at noon central time, but no promises.
What is this “central time” you speak of?
Gods own time. The timezone of all non philistines
*angels sing*
Did George Washington operate on Central time? Did any of the Founders*?
*George Rogers Clark doesn’t count.
I haven’t looked it up, but I’m thinking time zones weren’t a thing in Washington’s day.
Washington didn’t need time zones – he had like 30 goddam dicks after all…
A different time zone for each one?
And why am I encouraging you?
I think it was the railroads that came up with the idea of Standard Time.
A different time zone for each one?
Is that like having hoes in different area codes?
Apparently, there was a protest in front of this guy’s house.

So sue me…
See, folks, that’s how you do racism.
Yeah. Go big or go home.
Christ, what an asshole. I’m sure his business partners are really happy with the net effect this is gonna have on their bottom line.
Do you know who else went big?

I’m guessing those 2 were actually gay. I can’t imagine them being upset over the presence of Black Man’s Kryptonite any other way.
Shit stirrer says edgy things to provoke a response. Gets response. This is the quintessential dog bites man story. 20 years ago the place would have just quietly gone out of business instead of the entire Western world having to take a side on it to signal their righteousness.
And all those wonderful commenters who say they would buy gum from the little ethnic girl. Um, do you feel you’ve now done something good? That kid’s not going to get any money just because you said online you would buy from her if you could. It’s really no different than those posters who say they are going to kick another commenter’s was. You can say anything in comments without ever backing it up, can’t you, you generous awesome people commenting on the bar story website.
It’s all bullshit. There’s no way that little Hispanic girl would be in a bar selling gum anyway. The Hispanic woman selling flowers would have kicked her ass for cutting in on her territory before she got through the door.
Flagged! Triggered!
Wow, that escalated quickly. Doesn’t he know you’re supposed to pay Yelp to make bad reviews go away?
This might be the greatest effort at spin since Baghdad Bob. Or Hanoi Hannah.
It is absolutely absurd that they’re still touting it and saying “well, once the rest of the state is forced to make the same mistake we think the results will be better.”
Woodchippers are too good for these cocksuckers.
Just because one social experiment appears to be yielding disappointing effects to date is no reason to stop experimenting
This whole attitude pisses me off. They are trying to come off as open minded scientists trying to find what’s best. They are totally ignoring the real harm that their policy caused and chucking it up to experimentation. I wish the GOP got smarts and showed the poor this and showed them how the left sees the poor as objects to be experimented with. But It’s not like we developed a non-invasive area of study that said this would happen…
I especially like how they think their failure will be mitigated by imposing it on a larger group (the whole state). And if that fails, it’ll be fine once imposed on the whole country.
These people in Seattle are getting the wrong kind of stoned.
In the fine traditional of all rational and scientific inquiry, they are willing to repeat the same experiment as many times as is necessary until it produces the result they imagine it should. The more the experiment fails, the more we need to try it.
THE SCIENCE IS NOT SETTLED!!!
The comments are mostly insane. But there are a few decent people willing to attack the idiocy.
“The comments are mostly insane.”
It is an article that advocates doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. So, yeah.
It’s the same old excuses. Socialism didn’t work because everyone wasn’t forced to participate. It is a clear admission that their shitty system cant stand up to competition but they cant see that.
Same exact thing with smoking bans. When they were going to pass one in Minneapolis, they swore that there was a huge crowd of potential customers that weren’t going to bars or restaurants because they didn’t want to be near the filthy smokers.
Once the city passed the ban, the city bars were extra empty because the filthy smoker left and no pink lunged new customers showed up. The problem was that those smokers could go to the suburbs, so along came county (and when that failed for the same reason a state) ban on smoking in bars.
The owner/bartender at my favorite bar says his after work rush has never recovered. Too many smokers simply go home now for their post work smoke and drink.
If there there was a huge crowd of potential customers that weren’t going to bars or restaurants because they didn’t want to be near the filthy smokers, then someone could just open a smoke-free bar. I don’t think there ever was a law that required bars or restaurants to allow smoking.
Strikes me as a variant of the progressives loving charity via the government but don’t dish out the money themselves.
But at least the air is clean, right?
Why can’t they offer a special license to bar owners who want to have smoking?
OK. Too rational.
Another license?
Ugh. just demand that ‘smoking permissible’ bars must provide adequate signage.
“eastside blogger 18 hours ago
@seattlelogic @Secretariat So this is the question that never gets answered by the right wing ideologues: why are the most arguably liberal cities, (or states for that matter), in the US, Boston, NYC, San Jose, Los Angeles, Seattle, doing the best economically? NYC’s minimum wage goes to $15 in 2018. They have rent controls and all kinds of other socialist policies like a municipal income tax. Even Trump loves NY (not mutual BTW). By your logic every one of these cities economies should be in decline. So how and where is a minimum wage, or other progressive policies shown to be an economic growth hindrance? ”
Jesus Christ. I’m Canadian and can think up a bunch of examples to answer its question. There’s literally no excuse for making such a statement.
There’s literally no excuse for making such a statement.
Lead exposure?
Tertiary congenital syphilis?
Nobody tell him:
People are fleeing New York at an alarming rate
Also, isn’t the reason they’re clamoring for a $15/hr min wage because the cost of living in those cities is so astronomically high? You know what’s good for that? Price floors!
The millennials and other young classes may not know it yet, but the more they prog, the more people run away from their urban revolution. Soon the progs themselves will run away without knowing that they’re running away. Suburban living may become cool again!
And then they’re gonna complain about how bad Chinese food is in suburbia.
Isn’t half of suburban Seattle Chinese already?
Fine.
They’ll complain about the Thai food.
Isn’t Thai and Chinese basically the same thing?
I KEED! I KEED!
It looks like we wont have to split the country. It is self segregating.
Good. It’s never been more crowded here. The rent is too damn high and the subways can’t keep up.
*reads article*
And… the city is still growing even if the region shrinks. Not exactly refuting the stupid tweet.
Well, I’m sure that the net growth rate is still positive as long as the prog cult blindly moves there along with the usual immigrants. Soon, though, even those crowds won’t be enough to compensate the flight as their bureaucratic utopia grows and grows.

I hope someone responded about the 100% Democrat cities that are also shitholes?
and LOL, Los Angeles. Well, our own version of the minimum wage increase goes into effect Monday, and I already heard from our local restaurant they’re cutting back staff. So yay it works, again.
Hey! I wonder if the folks down at the Minneapolis city council know about this study?
Probably not, because even their Congressman seems really happy.
That’s one of the most insufferable things I’ve ever seen.
I am guessing the ruling elite in venezuela have their own toilet paper flown in. The non-elites are out in the streets throwing shit bombs at the wrong TOP. MEN.
Is everything these assholes do “courageous”. That screwy use of that word annoys me more than the subject matter.
To be fair, it’s an Op-Ed. A stupid one, but one correctly labeled as opinion.
Socialism in a nutshell.
just because one social experiment appears to be yielding disappointing effects to date is no reason to stop experimenting.
Cool! laboratories of democracy! I choose Colorado as libertopia… y’all socialists need to GTFO so we can start experimenting.
Will there be grants and stuff to encourage other libertarians to move to Colorado?
Ok, that’s funny!
Canada Day is a lame-ass holiday, admits Canadian (rough paraphrase)
“In its 150-year history, Canada has never been the scene of large-scale civil war or foreign invasion…The big military battles in every modern war we’ve fought have been thousands of miles away. And so the usual narrative that binds nations together — our enemies came for us, but they could not defeat us — has no relevance.”
Hey wait a minute, have you forgotten a little thing called the War of 1812? Sheesh, even I remember American being embarassingly kicked out of Canada in that conflict, and you can’t even work up some anti-Yankee rabble-rousing?
They try to but then end up apologising for it.
lIke I’ve said before, the French languge version of the Canadian National Anthem is a lot less lame than the English language version.
Translating the French version back into English and you get:
“O Canada!
Land of our ancestors
Glorious deeds circle your brow
For your arm knows how to wield the sword
Your arm knows how to carry the cross;
Your history is an epic
Of brilliant deeds
And your valour steeped in faith
Will protect our homes and our rights,
Will protect our homes and our rights.”
There’s that fag talk we talked about.
Well, it WAS originally penned in French.
Anglos culturally appropriated it.
Bah. There’s some of that inferiority complex industry at work as well as some ‘we’re not American’ nestling deep within the subconscious. 1812 is by far the most over played nationalist card in the Canadian deck. Who fucken cares (even if accurate – which it really isn’t as nationalists recount it)? What about TODAY?
Quebec too tries to play the ‘Anglos under the bed’ to try and jell Quebecers. It works on June 24 and then dissipates because it’s retarded.

You’d have to have a heart of glass not to laugh.
So there’s a band called Dagwood. It should get together with Blondie.
One way or another someone is going to narrow gaze your jokes with death rays.
For those too young to have been there, Debbie Harry was hot, even when she was not blond in Blondie.

Huh.
Would?
I think so.
When I worked at the women’s prison, there was a woman there (doing 11 years for stabbing her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend as they lay in bed together) and she had a proclivity for jamming things up her butt. At one point, the major instructed the kitchen staff to dice up her hot dogs, pickles, and any other long-shaped food before serving it to her because she had been caught ramming them up her fudge-tunnel too many times. Anyway, one time she came to medical with a complaint: she had shoved a whole summer sausage up her ass and couldn’t get it out. At first, the doctor told her “if you can push it in, you can push it out” and sent her back to her cell, but they eventually rode her out to the hospital to get it extracted.
Was she saving it for later?
She poses for pictures with the object in question… well, I guess props for owning the moment, or whatever.
A four inch model? That’s for amateurs. Whoever wrote that story hasn’t spent much time around an emergency room if they think that’s somehow large for a rectal foreign body.
Ugh. Cheap-ass (drink!) fake gem and sharp corners?
That was an ornament, not a sex toy.
Well I guess the Padres have finally figured out how to get in the news.
Tough night for your Astros against my Yanks AAA team.
Yeah. Too bad they won’t have a chance to sweep a 12 game series and get tied up with us.
Nice. Long season though-we’ll get ya
Maybe. I’m just shocked that we can go 27-54 the rest of the way and finish at .500. That’s just crazy.
If the bullpen continues to act like they’ve never seen a baseball before, they just might go 27-54. Aoki had to come in to pitch the 9th. An outfielder. Sigh.
Odds that Keuchel doesn’t make it back this year at all? Pity, given he was looking at a Cy Young before the neck thing. I’ve already given up hope on seeing McHugh this season.
I think you’re overreacting. Brett L called it when Keuchel went on the DL. I’d expect them to rotate starters on the DL until someone starts to actually threaten them in the division. It’s a winning strategy to keep young arms fresh in October.
As for Aoki pitching last night, why waste the pitches for anybody else in the bullpen when the game is out of reach? I wouldn’t read anything in to that.
What, ESPN didn’t try and put an SJW spin on it?

Pepe Le Pew: No.

Thought that Daniel Pipes had backed down from that whole “No Go Zone” thing, claiming they didn’t really exist.
Though an ethnic ghetto’s inhabitants sexually harassing women doesn’t seem out of place for Paris, and then there’s that lefty Web-journalist guy who supposedly went to Sweden to debunk the idea of refugee-dominated zones, and ended up having to leave quickly to ensure his safety.
My cousin lives in Paris and says they’re real.
The American left says no-go zones don’t exist. So it must be true..
If course most major European cities still have areas where police and fire fighters just don’t go. Because when they respond to an emergency there often isn’t one, and instead they get pelted with rocks and have their vehicles incinerated.
But it’s totally not the same thing.
Those sophisticated Europeans….tsk, tsk.
They exist in Baltimore. And if they want to come here to get proof, I can give them the directions to get to some of them.
Long, and very speculative, but still interesting.
http://slatestarcodex.com/2017/06/28/why-are-transgender-people-immune-to-optical-illusions/
I’m pretty sure they’re not immune to optical illusions. Especially since every time they look in a mirror and see a man, they believe they’re looking at a woman. And vice versa.
File this under “cops are fucking useless”
Before going to work last night, a buddy and coworker of mine noticed two of his pistols were missing from his house. He called his 16 year old son to inquire. His son didn’t have them, but had had friends over the day before. My buddy told his son to figure out what he could while he called and reported them stolen. About 9 oclock last night (while we were both at work) son gets ahold of father and tells him who stole them. He found out through one of his friends girlfriends that one of his “friends” had recently aquired 2 new pistols. This friend was even kind enough to post pictures on FB of himself with his newly aquire property.
My buddy calls the cops back with a name, an address, and a screenshot of the the if with his property. The cop takes his story and says he has to talk to his supervisor. Several hours later after getting no response from the cops, my buddy calls back. The cop tells him sorry, but he hasn’t heard back from his supervisor. The cop offered that he should send his son to recover his property and if the son obtained the property back, then he could elect to press charges.
That’s when my buddy blew up on the cop. The jist of it was, “What good are you if you can’t recover stolen property that you know the location of. And Fuck you um. ot sending my son to attempt to recover stolen guns. That’s your job”
Anyway, here we are 12 hours later and the cop if off his shift and my buddy is still waiting on an answer from a supervisor.
Why doesn’t your buddy call the local media outlet and tell them what’s going on? I’d imagine they’d callctge cops and then something would actually get done, if for no other reason than to avoid the public shaming that would happen if it got out they told you to send a teenage kid to retrieve stolen guns.
That’s not a bad idea. I just got home from work. he did too. I’ll give him a call.
Wow, I actually have a reason the watch the local news.
Meh, it’s all going down in Hartman. Not even a signifigant enough place for local media to notice.
River Valley?
Hell, the zombie apocalypse could break out there an no one would notice.
Cue the pubic outage at Lach’s buddy for having firearms where a child can access to them
Nah. Maybe is some places. This is rural arkansas. There is no stigma for having guns where a 16 year can access them. Hell, his son has multiples rifles in his room, and there is nothing out of the ordinary about that.
“Pubic outage” lolz
Are you kidding. Sending our precious boys in blue to a place that is known to be armed is too dangerous. It’s best if we send your children instead.
I told him semi jokingly when he first found out where his property was and who had it that there’s no way the cops are going to do anything about it. I told him cops are way too big of pussies to go somewhere there may possibly be armed individuals, plus there is no money to be made in retrieving stolen property.
I guess I hit the nail on the head. My cynicism turned out to be absolutely correct.
He can always call the parents of the thieves and send them screenshots of the dumbasses FB page and tell them they can return his property lest there be serious legal repercussions.
Then call the news and go apeshit.
I just talked to him. He is at the police station raising hell. I hope he doesn’t get arrested. I might lose my temper enough to end up in a jail cell if I were in his shoes.
“Gun nut arrested for disturbing the peace
“Admitted that his guns were in the hands of irresponsible teenagers”
“Local gun nut arrested for contributing to delinquency of minors as youths are caught with his guns.”
“Gun nut arrested after disturbing peace. Lured youth that was turning his life around by giving easy access to assault weapons.”
He needs to realize that he is dealing with retarded apes with virtually unlimited power of life and death over him.
The cops are probably biding their time to figure out how to turn this into an illegal transfer of firearms and then do some asset forfeiture. What’s in it for them otherwise?
The is the single area where English law is more “libertarian” than American, because in England – at least until the practice is ended on “social justice” grounds – a private person may file a prosecution. Persuade a magistrate there’s cause for prosecution, and you can personally bring the accused to trial in court.
I don’t know if that applies to juveniles.
Whereas in the free and individualistic U. S., you have to wait cap in hand on the authorities to see if they will deign to prosecute people who stole from you, not to mention recovering the property.
“In England and Wales…A private prosecution can be started by any person or organisation and operates to all intents and purposes like a public prosecution. Such prosecutions are becoming increasingly commonplace when the state authorities, for budgetary or other reasons, decline to get involved in a case.”
That seems like a good way to get several people killed.
Inb4 the guns turn up at a crime scene in Mexico…
Yeah, I think your buddy would have been better off just going and collecting his guns rather than calling the cops. Arkansas or not, pigs will be pigs. Do these kids not live with their parents anymore? Seems like the parents wouldn’t want to have to pay up for attorney fees especially given the Facebook pics he has for proof.
He might have been better off going it alone, but then mabye not. He wants charges filed (and I don’t blame him. I hate a thief.) The quality of the parents is also highly questionable. He may have gone over there and ended up fighting with some idiot parent who refuses to believe their angel did anything wrong and who knows what that could lead to. That and he doesn’t have the deep mistrust of police that most of us Glibs do. He figured that if he called the police with a legitimate com plant and a clear cpurse of action, then the police would do their jobs and all would be well. I know better, but not everyone does.
Unfortunately if those kids end up shooting somebody, your friend could be held liable. Not saying that’s right, just that it’s the screwed up world we live in. Hopefully his son is smart enough to reevaluate how he chooses his friends.
You are correct JB. His son is a fairly good kid. He hauls hay for me in the summer. I live in a pretty economically depressed area and his son goes to public school where most of the other boys he goes to school with are from shit families. He doesn’t have much to choose from as far as friends go. His father (my buddy) has always been tough on him when it comes to things relates to making good decisions and working for what you have. Unfortunantly, the kid has few choices when it comes to friends. I know that my buddy (his father) is ripping him a new one over this. Hopefully the lesson sticks. Often the natural tendency of teenage rebellion will cause a youth to reject the values of their parents until they how up though.
I remember having a small party once when my parents were out of town. My dad sold sporting goods and some nice nfl and college jersey samples he had ended up missing. I had it narrowed down to 2 or 3 “friends”. I never hung out with them again. Live and learn.
Hopefully that is the lesson learned by my friend’s son.
His father (my buddy) has always been tough on him when it comes to things relates to making good decisions and working for what you have. Unfortunantly, the kid has few choices when it comes to friends.
Kids like that need good adult role models that aren’t their parents. Somebody willing to tell them when they’re being stupid without riding their ass for every little thing. Sounds like you’re in the position to be that guy for this kid (if you’re not already).
My Dad ran into a similar situation. He hired a guy to take down a couple of trees, and while my Dad was out of town the guy scammed my mother into writing him a check for more than the agreed fee and then skipped out without finishing the job.
When my Dad called the Sheriff’s office, he found out that the guy was wanted for similar crimes in two adjacent counties. After a couple of weeks of no action by the police, my Dad goes around to the local fix-it shops to see if anyone knows the guy…. and it turns out he has a couple of chainsaws being fixed at the local shop. The guy is coming in that afternoon to pick them up. So my Dad calls the cops and lets them know where they can pick up this wanted fugitive. And they do nothing. It seems they think those warrants are a problem for the other counties, not for them. I think the quote was “well, he’s not wanted for anything in this county”.
The courthouse is across the street from the chainsaw shop, and there are two deputies in cruisers chatting with each other in sight of the shop. So Dad walks up to them and points out what is going down, and they jump into action.
Just kidding! They sit there as the guy walks in to the store.
So my Dad calls the Sheriff directly and tells him if he doesn’t get his men moving, there will be hell to pay. So they end up arresting the guy. Finally. But my 70 year old father had to do all the work. Oh, and the shop owner helped out by delaying the criminal until they could get over there.
That sort of reaction to theft and fraud is surprisingly common.
I even had a situation where some guy in my apartment complex parking lot backed his car repeatedly into one of the parked cars, causing a lot of damage. So I reported it to the police as it was happening. They showed up a couple of hours later. I gave them the license and a description of the events. They didn’t even write down the plate number. “We don’t even know that a crime has been committed. He could have been the owner of the vehicle.”
My brother-in-law had his car stolen in Dallas. He reported it to the cops and filled out whatever BS paperwork was required. The next day he saw it in the parking lot of an apartment complex down the street, filled with a bunch of obviously stolen electronics. He called cops and told them what happened, and a cruiser stopped by. He asked them whether they’d like to sit on the car until somebody came out to it, or if they’d take the stolen electronics. In response, they said “we’re not [insert nice suburb here], we don’t do any of that. Just take the car and go.”

He may want to talk to a lawyer and see if it would be appropriate to get a writ of replevin or something similar in order to recover the guns.
Certainly he should talk to a lawyer before sending his kids over.
OK, I saw the photo and I’ve tracked down the Miami Friends Church with the fireworks stand.
Miami Friends Church in Miami, Oklahoma is part of the Evangelical Friends Church Mid America.
I’ve previously quoted part of the EFC (Mid America) Faith and Practice, so here’s a reminder:
“…At His second coming, Jesus Christ will return in power as King of kings to consummate His rule over individuals and nations by the final triumph over Satan….The blessed ones shall live forever in heaven, but the lost suffer eternally in hell.”
Hmmm…there’s also this:
“Peace
“We feel bound explicitly to avow our unshaken persuasion that all war is utterly incompatible with the plain precepts of our divine Lord and Lawgiver and the whole spirit of His Gospel, and that no plea of necessity or policy, however urgent or peculiar, can avail to release either individuals or nations from the paramount allegiance which they owe to Him who hath said, “Love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44, Luke 6:27). In enjoining this love and the forgiveness of injuries, He who has bought us to Himself has not prescribed for man precepts which are incapable of being carried into practice, or of which the practice is to be postponed until all shall be persuaded to act upon them. We cannot doubt that they are incumbent now, and that we have in the prophetic Scriptures the distinct intimation of their direct application not only to individuals, but to nations also (Isaiah 2:4, Micah 4:1). When nations conform their laws to this divine teaching, wars must necessarily cease.
“We would, in humility but in faithfulness to our Lord, express our firm persuasion that all the exigencies of civil government and social order may be met under the banner of the Prince of Peace in strict conformity with His command.”
“incompatible with the plain precepts of our divine Lord and Lawgiver”
Um, I’m an apostate. But the jesus I grew up with was not political. Something about freewill and gods laws being not of this earth.
“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s”
You didn’t build that
If anyone gets to use that phrase, it’s God.
Some would say that’s the only one who did use that phrase.
#Lightworker
The Bible:“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s”
Also The Bible: The earth is God’s, and all it contains,
The world, and those who dwell in it.
Full-on pacifism is a minority viewpoint, but one doesn’t always see it in conjunction nowadays with the fire-and-brimstone stuff.
OTOH, I’m not sure whether the Miami Friends Church is meaning to celebrate war with its fireworks exhibit. I’d have to ask them, and I’m feeling lazy right now.
They can post here, if they want, though!
“the lost suffer eternally in hell.”
Incompatible? That word, I do not thing it means what they think it means.
Is there a Miami Enemies Church?
Why the Friends are called Friends

Rand Paul is saying that there is no good reason to force everyone to subsidize pregnancy insurance, the CNN reporter says:
“If you take that all the way to it’s conclusion, then you have only the people who are pregnant or going to be pregnant to have pregnancy insurance. So then all that cost is going to be borne by women” (paraphrased, because I’m doing my own transcription here)
Get a husband if you want someone to help you pay for your children, ffs. Also, has this woman never heard of child support?
And I SF’d the link.

Right. And in the world of that CNN idiot, there’s no such thing as a family plan.
“If you take that all the way to it’s conclusion, then you have only the people who are pregnant or going to be pregnant to have pregnancy insurance. So then all that cost is going to be borne by women”
Well… yes. Sort of like how the cost of auto insurance is borne by drivers, and the cost of home insurance is borne by home owners. Generally speaking, if you aren’t in the risk pool for a particular hazard, you don’t insure against it, because that’s retarded.
Speaking of there is actually orbital bombardment insurance available on the intergalactic market. The commentariat may want to pool their meager resources
Not only is it retarded, I’d say its Fradulent. You’re forcing someone to purhase something you know they will never need. If this wasn’t the law, I’d think Insurance Agencies could be sued for fraud if they tried to pull that.
I’d think Insurance Agencies could be sued for fraud if they tried to pull that.
It may even be an anti-trust issue. If Microsoft can’t bundle IE with Windows, how could insurance companies bundle unrelated and unnecessary insurances together?
But shouldn’t I be forced to buy flood insurance or hurricane riders if I live in the desert?
Yes. I live in south Florida and insurance is a bear. So yes. You should be forced to buy into my insurance pool.
And I want a pony, while you are at it.

Yeah, and then I tried to post it again with *two* links so I’m really on a roll this morning.

The not having health insurance tied to employment, and being able to buy across state lines, are two things that would definitely lower the cost, but also something most Republicans and Democrats don’t want to do.
As far as the cost of health care itself, the thing that might reduce it the most is eliminating prescription requirements for medicine. I wouldn’t be surprised if the average person spends most of their health care money on getting permission slips. But that’s never going to happen.
That’s one aspect of American healthcare that is a big part of the problem, and Obamacare has only cemented that dysfunctional link. Tom Woods had an episode of his podcast on healthcare, and he stated that it’s good when people band together to buy cheaper health insurance, but questioned why this grouping must occur at your workplace. Most people have relationships with other groups that is much more permanent than their employer: a church, a charity group, a hobby-related organization like the NRA, or even mutual aid societies (like we used to have before the government “fixed” healthcare).

Funny thing is, a lot of other countries have self medicate things going on. IOW, if you have a bacterial infection, you can just walk into a pharmacy and buy some antibiotics. And no one is shitting their self over it. It’s completely fucking stupid and pointless to make a person with a sore throat go to a doctor and pay $100 to be told they need an antibiotic.
Oddly, antibiotics, and drugs that can’t be safely self-administered or have no self-use (eg. anesthetics), are the drug uses that benefit most from a gatekeeper. Because bacteria can develop resistance, the over-use of antibiotics puts everyone at risk.
Absolutely. And instead of gate-keeping, most internists will write you a prescription for a Z-pack for every cold you report, because you want them to do something!
So yeah, that’s one area that is totally dysfunctional with or without government oversight.
The one good thing about my doctor is that he won’t do that. And his nurse practitioners double-won’t. I know of one of #6.2’s school friends whose mom is an utter helicopter parent nightmare who got kicked out of the clinic after a lecture by one of the nurse practitioners about the topic of antibiotic resistance.
Problem is that I expect most of the other doctors in the area aren’t as stalwart.
I’ve had my life saved twice by timely and effective intervention by antibiotics. I really don’t want to have to start relying on prayer.
But it’s not fair to make women pay for pregnancy-related expenses because pregnancy is a mysterious affliction whose cause is yet to be discovered. Until we figure out why women are just popping out babies at random, we need all the taxpayers to chip in for this expense!
I thought we decided it was buses.
My wallet – my choice!
What I really love is how leftists tell us one minute that there’s a population crisis and we need government forced population control, and the next minute tell us that there’s a fertility crisis and we need to import millions of unskilled workers from the 3rd world to fix it.
It’s almost as if they don’t really care about the causes they champion, and only use them to build coalitions.
Maybe we could somehow examine what they say, find the things they don’t constantly contradict themselves on, and thus determine what their real goals are?
The goal of their leaders is to get as much control over you and steal as much of your stuff as possible. The goal of their useful idiots is to allow them to do that.
Bingo.
They have a giant wobbly pyramid of conflicting causes, that serve only to prop up socialism. Destroying capitalism is pretty much always at the core of any policy proposed as a fix for any individual issue they allegedly care about.
Destroying capitalism is pretty much always at the core of any policy proposed as a fix for any individual issue they allegedly care about.
Scratch a victim, reveal a totalitarian.
Policymakers and Seattle citizens may be willing to accept some loss in low-wage employment if they perceive the distribution of gains and losses favorably.
Wow. That’s incredible.
“What the fuck do you know? Have you ever won an election? Do you work for a think tank? Quit whining and apply for welfare with the rest of the lab rats.”
As someone who has been down on his luck at a point, and took a few low-paying/sketchy jobs before working my way up, fuck these people.
Getting those jobs helped me avoid being an alcoholic, suicidal loser. Got me enough self respect to get a girlfriend (and then wife) and finish my Masters.
I remember when I decided to go to college and had little to no money to pay for it. When I graduated having paid it all off myself by working 50-60 hours a week while taking most classes at night and on weekends, I thought to myself ‘this really is the greatest country on earth. Anyone can achieve whatever they want to if they work hard enough’. I never once thought ‘this isn’t fair! I should just be given everything for free, because!’. I already had my first job in IT before I graduated because I never stopped trying and finally a local company allowed me to get my foot in the door.
Yeah…. I had my first job offer in IT before I graduated. That was way back in the early 80’s. My roommate got a job all the way across country and introduced me to the recruiter. They thought I’d be a great fit. Some stupid company called Micro-Soft or something. No way I was dropping out as a sophomore just to go get some dumb job 3,000 miles away. You can’t fool me.
(actually a true story)
I don’t get how “progressives” can claim to be so empathetic and understanding of the poor, but then think that they’re helping them by taking their list of options and outlawing the one option that they actually chose. In other words, they think it’s better for someone to be unemployed than to make less than a “living wage”. They think it’s better to lose your job for lack of transportation rather than take a payday loan to fix your car. They think it’s better to be homeless than to live in an apartment that these rich suburbanites have deemed to be “substandard”.
And now, you are a well educated alcoholic. Welcome to the party, pal! ??
While we are surprised by the magnitude of the estimated loss in hours, we are not surprised to see some loss of low-wage employment caused by a local minimum wage. It is easier to relocate low-wage employment outside city boundaries than it is to relocate employment outside a state or country.
This raises another question. If some evil business owner decides to “relocate” his minimum-wage-slave plantation in order to escape justice, how much of a hit is he going to take when he attempts to sell his (newly less (if not un-) profitable business? How much value has been lopped off every single business in Seattle by this little “experiment”?
Seattle is in sort of a unique position by having Amazon, Microsoft, and Boeing. Just because they’ve gotten off lightly with their social experiments, doesn’t mean other cities can. I’m guessing that Portland will go broke in no time if they try that shit.
Glibertarian morality test?
Pull lever or not?
Fuck yes.
False dilemma. As soon as you put pineapple on it, it ceases to be pizza.
Who cares? Pineapple is delicious.
I’ve got 4 pineapples ripening on my counter as we speak. 99 cents a piece. What a deal. It keeps great in the freezer for smoothies and jalapeno pineapple dipping sauce too.
That said, never on pizza. Or rather, never on fresh pizza. Once it’s been refrigerated it’s edible again.
Yes, just not on pizza. That’s an abomination.
I don’t care what anyone says – one of the best pizzas I ever made was with barbecue sauce (instead of pizza sauce) topped with chunks of leftover barbecued pork shoulder and diced pineapple.
NOT A PIZZA.
He didn’t say he made deep dish.
“Put pineapple on pizza” can be construed as a neutral phrase as to the pizza-ness of the pizza once the pineapple is on it.
You could speak of “put anvil on pizza” – even if a pizza with an anvil on it is too squished to be real pizza.
But then WHO WAS PHONE?
Are we dancer?
If I had Christ-like courage, I’d throw myself in front of the train in hopes of stopping it. But my desire not to not-die might be too strong for me to carry out such a self-sacrificing gesture.
Wait, I mean my desire to non-die
True story: when we went into downtown Cedar Rapids last night, we had pizza at a place called Need, which featured New Haven style. This appealed to us. The menu suggested we ask about the special pizza of the day, and of course SP did. “It’s bacon cheeseburger topping with a Thousand Islands sauce.” The look on her face was that of someone reading their first SugarFree story.
Some creative cook with a man bun needs to get bitch-slapped into sensibility.
I’m picturing a look something like this
I get a slice of something similar frequently for lunch, it’s ground beef, tomatoes, lettuce, thousand island on a pizza. essentially a big mac sans bread spread out over a pizza. it’s good
Thousand Island bacon cheeseburger pizza? Sounds absolutely delicious!
That’s awful and criminal.
‘New Haven style’?
How about ‘Rufus shoves his skinny ass in your face’ style?
“Who ordered the salad?”
They have man-buns in that part of the country? I thought that was an urban/coastal thing.
Hell no. Fruit has no place on pizza.
And to all you pedants who are thinking of typing a reply informing me that tomatoes are actually fruit; fuck off. The SCOTUS decreed that the fruit/vegetable definition depends on perception and usage, not scientific technicalities.
I will agree with that in general, but admit one exception: figs and Gorgonzola dolce, with arugula added on top after the pizza is taken out of the oven.
Take scaloppine wrap it in figs. Add prosciutto and/or cheese.
Cook in lemon, white wine or some variation of piccata.
You’re welcome.
I recommended this to the chef/owner for my daughter’s baptism because it was fig season and my father loves figs. So I offered to bring figs from Calabria for it.
The chef loved the idea but took care of everything else.
Deelish.
Cheese of choice that is. I personally hate gorgonzola. Or most cheeses for that matter.
Stinky poo.
But how am I gonna eat it with no tomato sauce?

Did someone say punk? As in, punk rock girl?
Pineapple is delicious.
True. However, pineapple should never be cooked. Warm pineapple is an abomination.
Tacos al Pastor is one of the best things in life.
Yeah, I love tacos al pastor
This guy gets it.
Pineapple is pretty good. I took a trip to Hawaii about 10 years ago and had pineapple that was ripe when picked. My god it was great. Same thing with the mangos I ate there.
I have never been anywhere I can get a freshly picked ripe banana, but I understand that they are delicious too.
Living in Hawaii has downsides but you are absolutely correct about the fruit. I am looking out my window at my mango and apple banana trees and have a friend who raises pineapple. I will never eat those fruits anywhere else again. Ripening on the plant is required. The downside is that you spend months with the fruit on the tree and then BAM you have to figure out what you are going to do with 125 bananas at once. Mangoes are also incredibly prolific. From my tree every year I have hundreds of 1+ pound fruits to deal with. I still have almost 200 in the freezer since you can only drink so many smoothies and mango daiquiris before organ failure.
I’ll take all the pineapple in my curry thank you
^This. And pineapple fried rice, Thai-style.

Punk rock is both aggressive and transgressive.
When straight edge emerged, that was about the most aggressive and transgressive thing you could be in the face of a highly sexualized and drugged out mainstream culture.
Feminism in the face of hypermasculinity at shows was about as transgressive as you could get around the time Bikini Kill emerged, and even then, their feminism was transgressive as fuck against old school feminists–I can be a stripper and exploit my own sexuality if I want, and if you old feminists don’t like that, you can go screw yourselves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOCWma5vOiQ
Feminists trying to enforce conformity at shows now are like skinheads taking over the scene back in the day. The feminists aren’t violent, but they’re worse in their own way because where the skinheads were at least trying to make the scene, the feminists are trying to destroy it. They aren’t even participating , really. They’re judgmental spectators. They’re poseurs.
P.S. The Dickies have been playing underground shows since 1977, and you’re gonna tell them about what punk rock is and isn’t, like really?
X was great.
Anyway, back in the day, the punk/hardcore scene was incredibly politically diverse — every extreme and everywhere in between.
Hmmm…do I have to register as a feminist to find those lyrics offensive?
No, “stick-up-the-ass” spans a diversity of demographics.
That, I can do.
The lyrics are supposed to be offensive.
That’s the point.
It was supposed to be offensive.
I’d quote TSOL’s Code Blue for its misogyny, but the necrophilia overshadows it to the point where you hardly notice the misogyny.

Pollak is a bit too much of a cheerleader for Team Red here, but he nailed the fact that the Democratic Party has become the religious party despite their hate for Western religion.
“On one side, there is a political party operating as a millenarian religious movement –clinging to long-discredited beliefs, obsessed with sex, afraid of science, determined to impose its bizarre views on others, and insisting that the government must control every hidden corner of private life.
On the other side are the Republicans.”

Die Antwoord has caused quite a stir once again for cultural appropriation.
Referring to their latest album’s cover, which was released in September 2016, controversial artist Mtsiki Mazwai has said that she wants to take the group to the SA Human Rights Commission for disrespecting Xhosa culture.
ICYMI: Die Antwoord’s latest album is called Mount Ninja & Da Nice Time Kid. The album cover features Ninja wearing a traditional blanket and hat that is usually worn during the Xhosa circumcision ceremony.

This Twitter exchange that I had proved that there are still TEAMsters in the GOP. I love how he views Rand Paul as an obstructionist, and as I grill him he can’t name one thing that he’s ever obstructed. On a side note, I’m all in for Austin Petersen for Senate if he decides to run as a GOP.
Also proves that GOPers run as much on feelz as their opposition. Literally nothing that guys said makes any consistent sense.
I was hoping petersen had gotten the nod from the LP. It seemed a lot of state LP didn’t like him, there were a few emails about how to block him or keep him from speaking. I hope he runs for senate, even as a Republican.
No NBA comments in these here links. The only reasonably interesting of your american sports has a strangely low following
What’s up with the viral incompetence of GMs accepting lowball offers away from Danny Ainge? He has more draft capital than anyone, and nobody wants to trade with him.
Phil Jackson was shitcanned by the Knicks. My level of interest went from “maybe he’ll help dig them out of a hole” to “well i guess we’re in for another decade of suck”
I was listening to that Knicks/Jackson ordeal on sirius the other day. What a mess.
I predicted this back when they hired him. Phil Jackson’s main skill as a coach was not getting in the way when he had amazing talent. He didn’t develop any young players and his teams never really got any better with him at the helm. The only way they improved was by trading for players that were already good. Even his vaunted triangle offense was designed and implemented by Tex Winter, not Jackson. New York is not a town that has a lot of patience and they weren’t going to wait for results when Jackson pissed them off.
You could see what would kill him back when he was the coach of the Lakers. He forced Jerry West, who was essentially Mr. Laker and considered the best GM in the league, out of his job because he wanted to be more in control of the team. After that, the team started to fall apart because West was the only guy both Shaq and Kobe respected enough to listen to when he told them to put their differences aside. Phil just had a huge ego and couldn’t seem to stand that another person in the organization had more influence with the players than he did. He would also pit people in the organization against each other, something he did in both Chicago and Los Angeles.
Once he got to New York, it seemed like he was still trying to coach the team but just didn’t want the headache of having to do the day to day coaching. He insisted on the triangle offense despite not having the personnel to run it. He didn’t have much patience with talking to reporters, working with his players and coaches, and the other things that you have to do to be a general manager. In short, he seemed to feel like he should be treated like royalty for his past accomplishments when pro sports is all about what you are doing right now. He also seemed like he was playing mind games with the players again, who I think got tired of his act (I have no idea what he was thinking talking publicly about trading Anthony and Porzingis). The team is much better off without him.
I think they’re actually ‘the same’ with or without him, which is why he’s going.
they always do they same shit = cling to overpriced talent way too long, and misuse their green-talent, or barter them away for more overpriced-ageing-talent as soon as they start to mature.
i agree jackson is over-rated, but i think he’s probably right that step 1 in breaking the knicks retarded-loser-cycle is “clean house and start over”.
I agree.
What? and Wha-wha-whaaaaaat?
What was Scottie Pippen before Phil Jackson took over the Bulls? Horace Grant? I’m not going to credit that completely to Phil Jackson, because they were young and players tend to play better after a year or two in the league, but they played a lot better under Phil. Kobe Bryant was a phenom who likely would have flourished anywhere, but Jackson was his coach when he took off. Lamar Odom was known as a talented but inconsistent player before playing for Phil, and he played well. Even unmotivated fuckhead Andrew Bynum played well for a few years when Phil was coaching.
And the part about teams not getting any better…how much better could they get when they went from “not getting out of the conference” to “winning multiple championships consecutively”? Were they supposed to go undefeated, do you think?
To the tune of “Two more championships and a Finals loss” in the four seasons after that, losing to that season’s champion (San Antonio 2003, Detroit 2004). The four seasons before were: 1997 round two, lost 4-1 to Utah. 1998, round three, swept by Utah. 1999, round two, swept by San Antonio. 2000 – Phil’s first year on the job – NBA Champs. Sounds like they made the right call going with Phil over West.
(I have no idea what he was thinking talking publicly about trading Anthony and Porzingis).
Porzingis, I agree. But floating Carmelo Anthony’s name in trade talks is a very good idea. Maybe you can get good assets from a team that needs a good #2 player, because Anthony never has been and never will be the guy you build your team around.
I agree that Phil is a bit of a blowhard, overrated as a coach, and not adept as a front office man. But you made it sound like he deserves virtually no credit for winning eleven titles in twenty seasons, which is crazy.
Sorry I’m just now noticing this, and I doubt anyone will read it, but in response to your replies:
Scottie Pippen was already a budding star when Phil Jackson took over in 1989, so I’m not sure you can credit Phil. He had shown promise in the 88-89 regular season but also played well in the 1989 playoffs and was an all-star in Phil’s first season as head coach. I’ll give you Horace Grant, although I’m not sure Grant ever reached his potential given his terrific athletic ability. I can’t really think of any other players on the Bulls, though. Toni Kukoc was projected to be a much bigger star than he ever became under Jackson, although he did win the sixth man of the year award once. The rest of the key contributors were veteran players acquired from other teams (Paxon, Cartwright, Rodman, Kerr, Harper, etc). Similarly, the pieces for the Laker championship run were either in place before Phil or were vets. Odom was talented and inconsistent before the Lakers, during Jackson’s stay, and afterwards. I’ll give Jackson credit for Bynum, who was blossoming into a star before a knee injury that effectively ended his career. Kobe was already averaging 20 a game the year before Jackson arrived so I don’t think it’s fair to say Phil developed him.
And yes, the Lakers did win two more titles with the same team after Phil forced West out, but I’d contend the front office suffered badly without Jerry. The team stopped getting better after the 99-00 season, but their two stars were so dominant they were able to continue to win. The addition of Karl Malone and Gary Payton was a mistake, in particular Payton and by then the rift between Kobe and O’Neal (and between Shaq and Jerry Buss), which West might have been able to bridge, was so large there was nothing to do but trade Shaq.
Look, I’m not saying Jackson should get no credit for 11 titles, far from it. He didn’t screw it up when he had great talent. When his team was favored to win, he won almost all the time. He also surrounded himself with a great staff and had enough sense to listen to them. But he developed a huge ego and clashed with his stars (Pippen and Bryant), ownership (Buss and Reinsdorff), and general managers (West and Krause). That last part was what made him a terrible choice for a GM position. He was a hell of a coach, but some of the things that made him successful in that job doomed him once he went to the front office.
Anthony has a no trade clause. That’s why it’s a bad idea to publicly shop him (keep in mind Jackson gave him that clause). What you do in that situation is talk to the player in private to let him know that you’re planning on blowing up the team and rebuilding. Carmelo wants to win a title. He won’t be doing it with the Knicks, who are at least 2 years away from title contention, probably more like 5 even if everything goes well. If he wants to play for a winner, you need to get him to agree to a trade. Going public saying the Knicks can’t win with Melo just pissed him off and made him dig in his heels. Bad idea that didn’t accomplish anything other than adding chaos to an already bad situation.
And I’d disagree with being unable to build a team around Carmelo. The guy was the centerpiece on two clubs that won 54 games and he took Denver to the conference finals. He’s not a loser, he just isn’t LeBron James. If you put a solid team around him, he can go deep in the playoffs, and has.
The NBA sucks ass. If I wanted to watch a bunch of hero ball, I’d go to the local YMCA.

OT: (It’s what I do, baby!)
A question for OMWC.
An acquaintance of mine recently learned that the wife of one of his new employees was Jewish and that his wife had died a few years ago.
During the first year after her death, his employee claimed that he made a ritual of prayer and hopes for the Jewish equivalent of Christian heaven(Ignorance, FTW!)his for deceased wife every day until the first anniversary of her death had passed and still makes a point of dedicating that particular day towards honoring her life, with absolutely no distractions, despite the fact that the employee has already remarried.
The employee claims that a newly widowed groom of Jewish heritage is obligated to perform that ritualin orderto keep ‘kosher’ with god.
So l ask: Not being overly familiar with the fine details that govern the burial/mourning rituals of Orthodox Judaism, is this guy full of shit? Or, have I seeded a kernel for an upcoming Jewsday Tuesday?
It’s called yahrzeit and it’s legit.
Ah, gotcha.
My buddy brought that up to me last week and was curious about the background behind it. Being the intellectually lazy/suspicious bastard he is, he asked me to vet that claim for him*(God forbid he use Google search and cross reference the idea across multiple websites in order to verify its accuracy, that might require effort!).

I certainly hope so. If not, I need to sleep for another 4 or 5 hours in order to regain any semblance of cognitive reasoning….
….Hmm? You lost me.
Either I’m still waaaayyyyy too hungover to be posting here or you P Brooks’ed your comment(probably the former).
In the big lebowski, walter is often making excuses for things he must do on behalf on his ex-wife’s jewishness.
one of the claims is that he is now jewish because his ex-wife is jewish, and this imposes a range of jewish observational duties upon him.
the joke is basically that he’s fanatical about strict jewish observance even tho he has no reason to be.
the movie eventually makes clear that the real reason he does this is because he’s actually in denial about losing his wife. the other scene where this is revealed is in similarly fanatical attitude towards how carefully his ex-wife’s dog must be treated, because “it has papers”. the film makes clear that his obsessions between the 2 things are effectively identical = its not about God, its about psychologically clinging to his ex-wife
Ergo, “the dog has fucking papers, dude” functions as a shorthand reference for ‘when people make suspicious claims of need for special-religious observance in regards to ex-wives’
i apologize if there was some confusion.
Goddammit, G!

“Trump may have his problems with women, but it is his unrequited love of the media that is undoing him.
“I always tell the president, ‘You don’t need them,’” says Sean Hannity, the self-abasing monkey-butler of the Trump regime. The president, Hannity says, can reach more Americans via Twitter than he could through the conventional media. That isn’t true, of course: Only about one in five Americans uses Twitter. Hannity might be forgiven for not knowing this, a consequence of his much more general habit of not knowing things.”

OK, it’s a bit catty. But I still say Kevin D. Williamson is one of the best political writers.
I’d say that his trashing the media is the exact opposite of undoing him it’s elevating him. They are significantly less popular than he is. He ripped on the media all the way to the White House, why would he stop now?
Because he won?
He won that battle. This is (metaphorically) a war for the long term direction of the country. If he takes the high road and ignores the media and stops going direct to the people with his message, then his message will not be delivered in a way that doesn’t paint it in the worst possible light…like it was during the campaign.
The media opposes Trump. But they also oppose the vast majority of his policies. And if their opinions are the only ones presented, and are done so without question, then he loses.
Agreed. I actually like KDW, but he’s still part of the media-cabal whether he likes it or not. Never take advice from someone bent on your destruction and never apologize to your enemy.
Now that he’s President, he has countless ways to go directly to the people with his message.
I’m not saying he should stop tweeting entirely, but this Mika/Joe thing had nothing to do with policy. Policy-wise this was a very good week for Trump. But then that news got buried under a trash heap of retarded.
I think he should do a weekly or monthly “Fireside Chat” on youtube. Nothing too speculative, just a reminder and archive of the things he’s achieved. He wouldn’t even need to resort to anything that wasn’t in a White House press release.
I’d *DARE* youtube to take it down as ‘hate speech’.
Policy-wise this was a very good week for Trump. But then that news got buried under a trash heap of retarded.
Yep, I’m beginning to come around to the idea that this is intentional.
1) Line up policy progress
2) Do something ridiculous to grab media’s attention
3) Get your policy goals done with minimal scrutiny
Yeah, it’s happened far too often for it to be accidental.
Trump’s version of three-card monte is just more flamboyant than the three-card monte we normally experience from Washington.
Trump and the media deserve each other. It’s like watching retarded chickens fight except retarded chickens fighting would be more dignified. Trump is a two year child. So is Mika. I could care less what either has to say about the other one.
I always take advice from my enemies, they have nothing but the best intentions for me.
I think it’s hilarious when people furiously try to get Trump to stop doing the very things that got him elected. All in his best interests, of course! Always that!

Excuse the heck of out me for assuming there wasn’t an entire trend of slutty Asian-American classical musicians.
If they have to prance around like Hooter’s waitresses, you have to ask the same question you’d ask about Hooter’s…is there something about the underlying goods they’re trying to distract you from?
I don’t ask questions. I just stare at their boobies.
The proper response for almost any situation!
I’m really scratching my head about how either Wang’s or Mae’s outfits could be viewed as slutty or “Hooter’s-esque”. They both seem like evening gowns to me. If you think women shouldn’t be allowed to wear evening gowns that are tailored to highlight their physiques, then perhaps this genre of music is more your speed.
Don’t know about Wang, but Mae does indeed prance around like a slut, NTTAWWT from some people’s point of view, unless it’s the music you’re interested in.
Oh, I get it, I’m like some Arabic guy singing Arabic-style war chants? Like ISIS, I suppose?
Can’t you come up with a more original insult other than “huh huh Republican Taliban”? I mean, Amanda Marcotte could say *that.*
Don’t worry, Eddie. She was playing Rachmaninov. It’s not like it was something good.
No, she doesn’t. Quit being hyperbolic.
And yes, with your supercilious unwarranted-sense of sanctimony, your views are akin to those of mutaween. If the shoe fits, wear it.
Don’t like the comparison? Then perhaps you should reconsider your reasoning.
Until then, I will celebrate your obvious conversion to Deobandi Islam with anashid.
Perhaps you have a different definition of “prance around like a slut” than I do.
And, yeah, those Muslim fanatics sure are ultra-Puritanical,
you really got me on that one.
“”The girls get peddled like barrels of petrol,” Zainab Bangura, the United Nations’ special representative on sexual violence and conflict, said in an interview with Bloomberg. “One girl can be sold and bought by five or six different men. Sometimes these fighters sell the girls back to their families for thousands of dollars of ransom.”…
“…Late [in 2014], [ISIS’s] “Research and Fatwa Department” put out a 27-point-pamphlet on how to treat one’s female slave.
“It sanctioned the capture and “immediate” rape of “unbelieving” women, especially virgins, as well as young girls who have not reached puberty. But it forbade the theft of another comrade’s slave and advised militants not to strike their slaves on the face. Given that the woman is supposedly the jihadist’s property, what the jihadist chooses to do can’t be considered rape, it claimed.”
What? I’m supposed to be scandalized that a bare midriff was shown for 5 percent of a rock-classical fusion video? There was nothing “slutty” or immodest about either her outfit or demeanor.
If that’s the best you have, I’ll consider that evidence you have conceded the argument.
I love it when you post evidence supporting my position.
It’s hard to take the ‘slutty dance’ criticism seriously unless you find most modern dance ‘sinful’.
What was the ‘crime’ in the Devil’s Trill video? Dressing in a strapless ball gown, or was it the all black country and western look? Maybe it was her flashing an ankle (I must have missed that frame)? – or showing her chest down as far as the start of her cleavage.
Or maybe it was that she had the temerity to move around in ways that had nothing to do with her bowing technique?
‘cmon, it’s ridiculous. Have you been to a high-school orchestral event in the last 200 years?
“Have you been to a high-school orchestral event in the last 200 years?”
I’d be happy to go if I could get that injunction modified.
/sarc
^ THAT – right there – seems to be the nub of the problem.
Ah, HM, I know you have fairly exacting standards when it comes to evaluating videos for sexual content.
But if I want to see women gyrating to music, the music better be something like Mötley Crüe or The Donnas or something similarly appropriate.
But like they say, de gustibus non est disputandum, which if I recall correctly, means “you didn’t even *address* my refutation of your ‘Islamic crazies are sexual puritans’ meme.”
That’s a different argument. But I ask, is it “gyrating” just because they are women? I mean, Itzhak Perlman gets into the music too and expresses it through his body.
Actually, I did downthread.
Yes you addressed, but failed to exclaim the lack of rape camps in Puritan Massachusetts – you’d think they’d have the rape camps due to all the sexual taboos. And you didn’t find any Puritan rulings or legislation allowing the sex slavery of non-Puritans.
So you’re impaled on a logical cleft stick – either the Puritans weren’t Puritanical, or else your analysis of sex taboos is wrong.
Again, your counterargument is both a red herring and a false analogy.
It appears that the bone of contention here is that the performance of classical music is incompatible with ‘modern performance dance’, and the performance of both, at once, in some ways diminishes at least one of the two in some way.
Is your objection primarily aesthetic, or moralistic?
Let’s see what you said:
“Perhaps the brutal treatment of non-believing women as sex slaves, as not following the religion are seen as inherently immoral and immodest, is just the other side of the coin of an honor/shame culture that” yada yada.
So you do, indeed, link sex slavery with certain restrictive moral codes re sex, moral codes which you associate with me:
“I wasn’t comparing Deobandis to the Puritans, I was comparing the Deobandis to you.”
And then you go ahead and discuss the Puritans anyway:
“Nevertheless, let’s not pretend Riyadh and Plymouth Plantation are universes away.”
So to repeat my question: Where was the sex slavery in Plymouth Plantation, and the Puritan jurisprudence justifying sex slavery?
(And I mentioned ISIS, not Riyadh, to be totally accurate)
“Is your objection primarily aesthetic, or moralistic?”
I guess it’s a little from Column A and a little from column B.
(And let’s not get into picky details about Massachusetts and Plymouth being run by different flavors of Puritanism)
I guess that my response is that when you want the music, minimize the browser window, and when you want the eye candy, mute the sound.
Just – never cross the streams.
“I guess it’s a little from Column A and a little from column B.”
I see what you did there.
I don’t know how many more times I can type the phrase “red herring” before you’ll understand it. If you will notice, not once during this exchange have I typed the word “Puritan”, in either its big or small “P” forms. You introduced that as a fallacy of illicit transference. As such, I see no reason to engage in answering a question that is completely ancillary to my argument.
“…this genre of music is more your speed.”
I was expecting something more like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1VeiStR6JQ
You have a weird way of not responding to an issue. You said:
“Nevertheless, let’s not pretend Riyadh and Plymouth Plantation are universes away.”
(which, incidentally, is itself a red herring since I never said Riyadh and Plymouth are in different universes)
So since you won’t answer my question, let me look up my handy copy of New England Bound: Slavery and Colonization in Early America.
Since Plymouth like other colonies in America had slavery, then unless they abolished human nature there would be cases of rape of slaves by masters, and I didn’t see any reports of masters being punished. But I didn’t see anything about ministers or legislators encouraging such behavior or instituting sharia-style rules to legitimize or regulate it.
But the idea that because you disagree about how much undressing and thrashing around classical musicians should engage in, you somehow have the right to equate me with honor-killing slavers, is baffling to me, not to mention offensive, and like I say, you don’t have Amanda Marcotte’s excuse of being as dumb as a brick shithouse, so you actually thought through your ridiculous accusations and made them anyway.
I think it’s Yuja Wang.

You actually expect people to believe that the Islamist extremists who put out a manual saying it’s OK to rape the Yazidi women they capture, are sexual puritans?
I mean, it’s just like Cotton Mather!
So you deny ‘awrah is a thing? Perhaps the brutal treatment of non-believing women as sex slaves, as not following the religion are seen as inherently immoral and immodest, is just the other side of the coin of an honor/shame culture that seeks to protect the “modesty” of its collective women at all costs through all manner of sartorial and other restrictions as human sexuality is seen as inherently corrupting and men would not be able to control themselves when presented with such stimuli, like dogs in heat?
You see that, right? That’s why you’re squealing like stuck pig when I have you dead to rights.
Viewing either Wang’s or Mae’s outfit or demeanor as salacious beyond the boundaries of good taste says a lot more about you than me. Quite frankly, it’s crazy talk.
OK, so you’re saying that societies like Puritan Massachusetts had massive rape camps for non-Puritan women? Otherwise your analysis is simply off.
I said their antic were beyond the bounds of good taste *because they were classical musicians.*
I’d say the same thing if my plumber decided to do an erotic dance number while fixing my toilet. It’s a question of combining activities which don’t belong together.
That’s a red herring. I wasn’t comparing Deobandis to the Puritans, I was comparing the Deobandis to you.
Nevertheless, let’s not pretend Riyadh and Plymouth Plantation are universes away. The punishment for all non-martial, non-reproductive sexual activity included whipping, being locked in the stocks, or death. All familiar sights at Chop-Chop Plaza.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the link for ‘awrah said “The intimate parts of the human body must, according to Islam, be covered by clothing.”
This is getting into “Hitler wore pants” territory.
Do you wear pants, you fascist?
You hoist yourself on your own petard. The crux of this conversation lies in what is considered “intimate”. All four major Sunni fiqh hold that it is the entire body of the woman, except the face and hands.
Again, by the standards of our society, nothing Wang or Mae wore did not cover what we consider to be intimate parts. This is self-evident, unless you weren’t raised in a Western culture.
Well, I’m obviously at fault for not reading the entire link.
I suppose that means I’m accountable for all the stuff I didn’t read?
Am I also accountable for all the videos you linked to but which I didn’t watch?
If your intention is to argue in good faith, then yes.

^We like witty Eddie, not bluenose Eddie.^
At least Eddie doesn’t tell you how stupid you are.
So your claim (in the form of rhetorical questions) was
“Perhaps the brutal treatment of non-believing women as sex slaves, as not following the religion are seen as inherently immoral and immodest, is just the other side of the coin of an honor/shame culture that seeks to protect the “modesty” of its collective women at all costs through all manner of sartorial and other restrictions as human sexuality is seen as inherently corrupting and men would not be able to control themselves when presented with such stimuli, like dogs in heat?”
And that’s the stuff you claim I believe in?
If you truly believe Wang’s and Mae’s dress and demeanor were, by any definition of the word, “slutty,” then, yes, that would be the logical summation of your beliefs that one would draw from your statements.
If that is not so, then perhaps you might want to reevaluate how “Excuse the heck of out me for assuming there wasn’t an entire trend of slutty Asian-American classical musicians. If they have to prance around like Hooter’s waitresses, you have to ask the same question you’d ask about Hooter’s…is there something about the underlying goods they’re trying to distract you from?” reads to someone else when referring to a woman wearing an evening gown/cocktail dress. If we’re talking about false analogies, then the king of all them is comparing Wang’s outfit to a Hooter’s waitress. There is no justification for it. It makes no sense.
To sum up: I’m either with the scantily-clad classical musicians who are parading around like sluts, or I’m with the Islamic fundamentalists.
It’s quite remarkable how quickly this seemingly-innocuous issue, once it got boiled down to its essence through HM’s incisive Socratic questioning, came down to this fundamental choice.
I don’t know much about miss Wang, I’ll grant that her dress was totally innocent. Mae was the one prancing around in which I now realize was a totally innocent manner.
If your standard of comparison is orgasm videos, then anything where people retain even a stitch of clothing looks tame by comparison.
Well, the real test is, holding whatever opinions you hold, (bizarre to our sensibilities or not,) what would you do to control such behavior? Because surely that’s what matters.
There’s no reason a prude can’t believe that other people should enjoy freedom, is there?
Incorrect.
What I said was that if you view a woman wearing a completely innocuous and tasteful evening gown as “scantily-clad” and “slutty,” your reasoning is akin to that of an Islamic fundamentalist. I completely reject your claim that either Wang or Mae dress or acted in any sort of slutty or immodest fashion.
Actually, Eddie. I apologize.
You’re not similar to an Islamo-crazie. I see now that you are actually arguing from a social justice intersectional feminist standpoint. You’re protesting the objectification of Wang and Mae from the male gaze of the audience!
I’ll post music like this instead.
#EddiePersisted
I also apologize for the bare midriff @3:04.
Sorry, HM, I beat you to it, I already pointed out the Amanda Marcotte-esque characteristics of your posts.
Here is your role model, Ms. Marcotte, in a 2015 article:
“…Hannity, like nearly all conservatives these days, is a strong believer in the Christian version of “sharia law,” i.e. forcing conservative religious beliefs on the non-believers by law.”
And like your good buddies in the Muslim fundamentalist movement, you see no relevant distinction between moral suasion on the one hand (articulating reasons why modest dress and behavior are appropriate) and violence and murder on the other hand (throwing acid in women’s faces, “honor-killing” them, enslaving them, etc.
The difference between you an Marcotte is that she has an excuse. She is an imbecile. Whereas you are intelligent enough to know better.
Apparently you’ve never heard of Julia Fischer.
Question for Number 6 (if you’re around): Every time I go to one of my trashy British tabloids, they’re crowing about TOWIE. What’s the deal with Essex?
I think you answered your own question.
Well, Essex was where a lot of London’s ‘East End’ inhabitants were relocated when London was being rebuilt after the war, and the subsequent programs of slum clearance of the 60’s. In the 70’s, some of the outer-lying towns like Basildon and Billericay started growing with a combination of “4 Privet Drive” developments and some larger ‘luxury’ housing.
That area was – comparitively – underpopulated as a region so close to London, so the overall impression was that ‘new money’ and ‘chancers’ were moving there, and popular culture reinforced this (Ian Dury’s “I’m Billericay Dickie, an’ I’m doin’ very well”). In the 80’s, Essex was a popular region for new money in the City – stockbrokers in their 30’s who commuted into the city wearing white socks and ‘working class’ attitudes.
There’s enough rural land for it also to have been a seemingly-preferred location for nouveaux-rich soccer player types to build mansions out there, so the overall perception is that it’s a zone full of nasty, superficial and low-class thugs whose only saving grace is money. Like all stereotypes, it’s somewhat true, but largely rooted in the rivalry north and south of the Thames (as with Richmond, VA). The upside is that because it’s partially true, you can always find narcissists who are rich, crass and sufficiently vain that they’re prepared to appear in shows like TOWIE or “Geordie Shore”.
Needless to say, just as “Real Housewives of Atlanta” is at best a kind of truthy fantasy, the average Essex Man is not so very different from the average suburban-sprawl Londoner.
Understood. Thanks!
The thing with TOWIE is that you can tell all of the women have burned more rubber than Don Schumacher, and have had more plastic surgery than most burn victims.
Massive fucking heatwave today in Bucharest. 38 degrees in the shade. God damn it’s hot
That’s barely above freezing!

Get out of the shade. What are you, nuts?
Just think of all the heat reflected by the concrete in the Palace of the Parliament.
Self-referential blather, FTW!
Some of my fellow feminist journalists saw a paradoxical benefit in Trump’s untrammeled misogyny. The flimsy mask of presidential civility Trump could muster has now slipped; we are back to a woman bleeding from her whatever. “Trump’s persistent attacks on women affirm what feminists have been saying all along: that sexism is still pervasive at all levels of American society,” wrote The Post’s Alyssa Rosenberg.
I used to make these arguments myself. Now, all I can think is that anyone who didn’t learn that lesson during the election or on the day after, they never will. It’s not that I think Trump’s crass feuds are deliberate distraction, a grand master plan. (With him, what you see has always been what you get, and it didn’t start yesterday.) It’s that by now the politics of offense is an exhausting feedback loop that whips us up and then takes us right back where we started.
In the 2012 election, a more innocent time, outrageous remarks had a propulsive force. Just ask Todd “legitimate rape” Akin, or Mitt “47 percent” Romney, or better yet, ask still-Sen. Claire McCaskill or two-term President Barack Obama. At the time, I was a staff writer, first at Jezebel and then at Salon, during what feels like the too-brief years when the feminist Internet came into its own. It had neither fully fractured nor yet bubbled into something Ivanka Trump could glibly co-opt.
Cathartic rage was our bread and butter; indeed, we were accused of cynically ginning up fury for the sake of clicks. Being on a reaction loop could be tiring — the apparent imperative for bloggers to have unambiguous feelings about everything could leave me, well, ambivalent — but the anger was real. It drew on collective pent-up feelings, the excitement of untold stories now suddenly getting a platform, new words to describe old behavior, words like mansplaining and manspreading and slut-shaming that are now hackneyed vernacular.
She misses the good old days, is what I get out of this. You know, when she still could pretend there were people out there who gave a shit about what she had to say.
WP;DR
Stolen.
There’s a pervasive something, all right. Let’s call it narcissism.
I keep hearing that Trump is stupid, Trump is a bigot of some flavor, Trump is going to lose, Trump is boorish, Trump has one foot on a banana peel etc etc, yet he keeps hitting it out of the park.
Oh yeah, these are the ‘Hillary has a 98% chance of winning’ people. Whatever they are doing they should keep doing it.
Yahoo image search for “gliberatarians” gave me OMWC’s van and a lot more.
my favorite fact about this site?
alexa says that the 5th most common search term to find us is
5. manly libertarian anarchists 4.90%
Bing image search gives me the hat and the hair and Neil Gorsuch.
DuckDuckGo’s search bar brings up some very recent pictures/cartoons from postings, cat butt etc, but none of the stuff I’d expected to see
Since we’ve been talking about punk rock and classical, this is a pretty good read:
http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/06/19/the-persistence-of-prog-rock
Ugh. Where to start. What a senseless waste time. I hate that level of intellectual masturbation.
1. Prog rock’s bands – at least, the most popular – combined usually 3 out of 4 features. (a) The musicians were usually technically accomplished, often with some classical training, (b) they were usually showmen in the traditional sense, their live performances were memorable, (c) they were artistically innovative, both musically and in their image – prog rock was exciting because it was promoted that way and (d) it was bombastic and self-celebratory, willing to take old musical ideas, and bend them (eg Yes and The Nice/ELP), often releasing their ‘covers’ which were more properly reinterpretations.
2. The time was right. People were bored with the other genres.
Trouble is, Weigel’s a fan, and if he’s for anything, I gotta be agin’ it.
holy crap, I just remembered my twitter password.
Heh, this is great.
What Glibertarians is
STEVE SMITH AND #6 SMELL INCOMING PURITY TEST
Yeah, that’s come up here a few times. Sloopy tried to engage with him but, as I recall, it didn’t end well.
From what I read, every time Sloop threw something at him, he deflected or obfuscated.
Something like ‘I wasn’t talking about you guys, but you guys are libertarians and I was talking about libertarians’
From the local rag. Control freaks shut down fun because Fun Permits were not obtained. When business owners originally tried to get permits, they didn’t tell owners what they needed.

It’s important to have a tight control over the amount of fun people can have, because if you don’t the fun won’t be distributed equally. I’d have thought we’d all understand that now.
The Fun Pie is finite.
this is a pretty good read:
Time out! You say, “pretty good read” and then link to the New Yorker.
ERROR! ERROR!
ANALYZE.
ANALYYYYYYYZE!
*clicks, whirs, snaps, fizzles*
There is a big difference between political opinions and the ability to write.
Haha, glibertarians are such children.
The big issue is that it is hard to engage with glibertarians. They don’t have much in the way of a political philosophy. They don’t take politics seriously. I can talk to a serious libertarian and find common ground. I can even get them to rethink some of their assumptions. But I can’t with glibertarians. They don’t think they have any assumptions. Their political beliefs come via osmosis, and they don’t even think of them as beliefs but rather “common sense.”
I’m going to go out on this limb with my chainsaw, gun and bottle of laudanum, and say, “They don’t take politics seriously” means, “They stupidly refuse to accept the obvious truth that politics (and, by extension, wise and beneficent public servants) are the only solution to society’s problems.”
Also, fuck off, slaver.
I must be waaayyy too oblivious but glibertarianism is enough of a ‘thing’ to be called out like that?
If so, we’ve appropriated someone’s culture!
I think these 2 things are actually mutually exclusive.
I think the problem is that most libertarians have too much political philosophy; which is why they can’t take ‘politics’ (e.g. TEAM BLUE vs TEAM RED pandering to morons with ‘free shit’ or ‘looming sharia laws!’, respectively) seriously.
iow, “more interested in ideas than acquisition of power for its own sake”.
You don’t see Salon commenters arguing about georgism or what constitutes a NAP violation in child rearing.
Well no, they’ve already been told what the answers are. That’s what their Top Men are for, after all.
And, the comments-

I spent all election season screaming at everyone I knew, “VOTE!” And so many had the tired response, “they’re all the same.” Some are realizing they’re not all the same, now.
There’s an intrinsic PR problem with good government. When it’s working well for you, it’s not noticed. Nobody thinks about snowplow funding when the roads are clear. They think about government snowplows when they get a ticket for failing to move their parked car. Yet budgets for snowplow funding are hugely important (and those tickets serve the dual purpose of raising revenue PLUS helping get cars off the street so plows can do their job).
We got a lot of “esplaining” to do!
You gots ta have ROADZ to get to yer job so’s you kin pay yer taxes. That’s what grownups do.
*thinks about how many small private plow trucks there are back home*
That’s exactly how the “progressive” left views corporations and private business in general. They have levels of material comfort that were impossible a century ago. They have computers connected to an incomprehensibly huge network of information where they can find literature, art, and music, much of it for free. They can order anything they want and have it shipped to their door in a day or two.
Yet, you never hear any leftists say “wow, those corporations did alright!” They only have nasty things to say about capitalism and free enterprise.
Surprisingly rational article in LA Times about minimum wage. Michael Hiltzik hardest hit.
Of course, businesses that spend most of their money on workers will try to find ways to cut costs. Loeb, the restaurateur, has already been trimming fat.
Cassia, one of the six establishments on the Westside that he co-owns, started serving lunch in the summer of 2016, right before the last minimum-wage hike. That foray ended after three months as Loeb realized the crowds were too thin and the tabs too small to cover his payroll. He had to lay off about 15 people.
Then, in the fall, Loeb changed the hours at Huckleberry, a more casual eatery, so that it closed at 5 p.m. rather than 8. Breakfast and lunch are the busiest times at the cafe, and dinner wasn’t delivering huge crowds.
“Labor is such a big consideration now that if you aren’t getting the most out of a service, it is very hard to justify it,” Loeb said.
Each time the wage rose since 2014, Loeb found a way to moderately increase his menu prices. That’s a privilege he can afford because his Santa Monica haunts attract a loyal clientele who generally won’t flinch at a gourmet price tag.
As he says elsewhere, “The money’s got to come from somewhere.”
Regarding the minimum wage argument I just keep thinking ‘foreseeable consequences are not unintended’. The people arguing for it are doing so precisely because it does reduce low wage jobs.
And the shittiest thing about that is that people who would take those low-wage jobs are instead going to end up on welfare, which may keep you alive, but it’s not progress towards anything. A low-wage job at least gives you a good reference and perhaps opportunity for promotion. It may be tough, but starting at the bottom and working your way up is the only path to success for people who have a tough time getting a job (like the unskilled and those with criminal records). You can’t walk into a job interview and say “Well, I’ve been on welfare for the past two years. Hire me!” You have a much better chance if you can walk in there and say, “I’ve been washing dishes for the past two years, and my boss will verify that I do a good job and show up every day“.
“Progressive” policies are just keeping these people on a treadmill of welfare dependency.
Heh, NJ shut down over the budget.
Only the parks are shut down; the regulators are still operating.
What about the bridges?
Christie had all the ramps shut down.
well of course.
I swear to fuck there’s a video of him asking this, but now I can’t find it.
Apropos of nothing in particular, here’s The Road Hammers (a Canadian country band) doing their best impression of a U.S. country band.
Have a great Canada Day, Canucky Glibs! For the rest of you, have a great Saturday!
Wow, who could have seen this coming?
Illinois to solve budget crisis with big tax increases
If anyone has any money, they won’t be there long.
