It’s been a long week and a half, friends. I want to thank everybody that filled in for me while I was dealing with the insanity down here. Its good to know you have friends that can lend a hand when you need them. OMWC, Swissy, Brett L…and anybody else that jumped in to do the links: you guys were a big help to me these last 10 days. And thank you to everybody who sent their thoughts and prayers Houston’s way. It means a lot to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Someday, I’ll put everything that happened down on paper, so to speak. When the nightmares end, lol. But seriously, its been a trying time and your support has been most welcome.
::breathes deeply to collect thoughts::
So how bout them Aggies? I went ahead and tuned out at halftime, so I feel like I missed something pretty phenomenal. No way does Sumlin survive this. So whoever out there in CFB that’s the flavor of the week, pack your bags and get ready for College Station. The Hokies also beat the Mountaineers yesterday. The big game Saturday was a bit of a snoozer, with Bama cruising, helped a great deal by Florida State’s incessant mistakes. And adding injury to insult, they’ve lost their QB for the year. The Clemson band got in a bit of trolling during their halftime show, and I can’t say a negative word about it. And Florida lost to TTUN because they still don’t know what offense is with the same coach in Gainesville for 4 years now.
As for baseball, the Yanks took a pair from the Red Sox this weekend, tightening the AL East race. The Astros look to have their act together, reeling off four wins in a row. The Indians won. The Orioles beat Team Canada in extra innings. The BIG RED MACHINE went down to the Pirates. The White Sox beat the Rays. The Nats and Twinks both fell. The Cardinals topped the Giants. And the D-backs beat the Rockies. Coming down the stretch run now, and this is shaping up to be a fun end of the season.
World Cup qualifiers are on for the next few days, and I have to say I’m not surprised at the USA’s terrible showing against the Ticos on Friday night. Bruce Arena sucks as a game manager and he sucks as an inspirational figure. I see a two-leg playoff against an Asian team in our future if we expect to end up in Russia next year.
That’s it for sports. Let’s get down to me enacting my Labor Day labor by providing you…the links!
Kim Jong Un plays the biggest game of chicken imaginable. One can only hope a coalition of potential targets are formulating a defensive plan that eventually leads to a freer Nork people and no bloodshed. But I’m not holding my breath.
Some more about the missile test and Trump’s reaction…in pidgin!
President Trump will end DACA program. Gives Congress six months to fix it before ending the policy of federal agencies ignoring the law as written and applying it evenly regardless of age. Hopefully this will result in a better legal and consistently enforced immigration policy instead of the “turn a blind eye (sometimes)” approach. But that’s there job of our legislature, not the whims of an Executive Branch who decides what laws to enforce and which ones to conveniently ignore.
Could somebody get a balm for that man? Oh, never mind. He’s dead.
I remember being proud of the GOP Senators and Reps that refused to sign off on the Sandy relief package because it wasn’t a stand-alone bill and had a bunch of other legislative pork attached to it. Let’s see if they have any principles and do the same thing now that Treasury Secretary Mnuchin is already demanding strings get tied to any Harvey relief. Ted Cruz, I’m looking at you especially.
Not to be forgotten, Los Angeles is dealing with a horrible wildfire in La Tuna Canyon. Gov Jerry Brown has declared a State of Emergency. Stay safe, SoCal Glibs.
Worth reading before you donate to a charity.
Well, it is Labor Day after all. I hope at least a few of you were expecting this song.
Have a happy and safe Labor Day. May your BBQ be all it can be.
President Trump will end DACA program. Gives Congress six months to fix it before ending the policy of federal agencies ignoring the law as written and applying it evenly regardless of age.
Engaging in the second biggest game of chicken possible. *Glad your back and in sane mind*
I think we know how this will go. The Republicans have lost their nerve to make meaningful changes. The Democrats will demand something close to open borders. Trump will run in some kind of crazy circle around making a deal, building his wall, and throwing stones at whatever Republicans actually try to get some legislation passed.
Well, to be fair, they’re on the back foot. All they’ve got are the Executive Branch, a majority in the Senate, a majority in the House, and nearly a great enough majority of state legislatures to call for a Constitutional Convention. No wonder they’re treading so lightly.
The Democrats don’t want open borders. The Democrats want a government-subsidized program to bring in new Democratic voters. Whatever policy they propose won’t reduce the regulations faced by most border crossers.
The problem is that too many Americans aren’t woke and don’t properly trust and appreciate their ruling class betters. It’s hard to govern when the sheep ain’t sheepin.
He is telling Congress to do their jobs. It is not the President’s job to write immigration law. Congress is supposed to do that. The President just enforces whatever law Congress decides to pass.
I’ve been saying this for a while, but I’m afraid it’s not going to get any better than it is now. Anything Congress does will make it worse in one way or other, for everyone. They should just leave it alone and enforce it.

I really opened the floodgates on that one
If it’s about a chicken, it looks like the Japanese are behind it.

If Glibertarians is looking for the next big thing for their website, a regular feature in pidgin ought to do it.
Seriously I am living for the BBC pidgin site. It is now my primary news and citation source.
“Our first priority is to make sure that the state gets money,” he said.
Has that ever not been the state’s first priority?
Cautionary tale for sloopy?
Wife ‘cut off husband’s penis’ because he spent too much playing golf’

“Police said they would probe more about the motive for the alleged attack before issuing an arrest warrant, reports Jeju Weekly.”
Because there could be a motive that would justify attacking a sleeping person? Well, at least they didn’t eat his dog.
“Hurrrr, abuse, or whatever, you patrishitlord.”
Welcome back, Sloop.
Minor errors: Yankees took Three of Four, the Nats and Twins fell.
Also, I believe FSU played Bama, not Mama.
They’re a bad ‘Bama Jama.
Yeah, I worked on fixing them after I re-read the post. It should be cleaned up now.
“Could somebody get a balm for that man? Oh, never mind. He’s dead.”
If you wanna get out, get out in style I guess. Or maybe it was a ritual sacrifice. Could go either way with that crowd.
It’s not Bilderberg, Dude.
I’m going with suicide or serious drug impairment (and I don’t think it was drugs.)
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Glad you’re back Sloopy.
Welcome back, Sloop!
Great song choice! Here’s another.
I would have suggested this song.
Of course you would.
Another.
I’ve had this on all day.
OK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAD6Obi7Cag
Surely you should know by now that I pick the songs I do in part because they’re the silliest, tackiest things I can think of. I could have suggested it was death metal, too.
Definitely the right song choice.
Doesn’t Sloopy own his own business?

From the charities article:
No money for those fuckers.
Ouch. They’re like Lots Quebec up here. They absolutely refuse to disclose their finances. Man I can just imagine the racket within those walls.
The government sure loves to make money off gambling I tell ya.
For the love of God….LOTO Quebec.
This auto-spell is starting to annoy me.
Didn’t the Red Cross pull some shady crap after 911?
Yes. Some might call it fraud.
Third Eye was a great album though.

Come to think of it, I can’t remember one song on that album that isn’t good.
Agreed. The Salvationers, bless ’em, do a fine job and are very efficient with donations.
I saw them in action in the 1992 floods and after Katrina. They are magnificent.
The Red Cross has been a rip off for decades. I have met World War II veterans who hated those fuckers.
My Dad hated them based on his experiences in Korea.
I worked for the Red Cross after hurricane Andrew. I wouldn’t donate 10 cents to them.

Do even people who speak pidgin English not read plain English? Is it only a matter of time before the BBC publishes a version in Guido?
Am I the only one that deliberately reads that site in Jar Jar Binks’s voice?
Or was I the only one that did until just this minute?
Messa want to say, on beehava BBC, wessa glad ussa didn’t no drown drown, Sloopy!

What Criminologists Don’t Say, and Why
https://www.city-journal.org/html/what-criminologists-dont-say-and-why-15328.html
TW: it’s a long one.
“Academic criminologists are mainly sociologists, trained in statistics and armed with theories.”
Hah hah hah, trained in statistics, hah hah hah. A grad school colleague’s career plan was to just redo sociology papers with the correct statistics.
That would be a useful thesis actually.
He got tenure.
It would be more accurate to say that they are “armed with numbers and trained in theories”.
Whether the numbers are in any way relevant, or statistically significant, or even accurate is usually immaterial if they appear to support the narrative of their theories.
It’s a good one. Thanks for the link, Pie.
Very interesting article. Thanks Pie!
I like this article, and City Journal in general, but… I’m kinda not so convinced when I read things like :
The authors have just turned “40 percent of individuals ***arrested*** for murder” into “40 percent of ***murderers***.”
This does not inspire confidence in their other statistical claims.
Exactly. Good catch.
And in sports, you forgot Anastasija Sevastova.
And if Plišková and Svitolina meet in the semis, it will be for the #1 ranking.
I’ve been remiss on following tennis. I know Fed struggled to get past the first two rounds. And I know Sharapova got bounced and Venus is rolling along. I’ll catch up today.
Purely as curiosity does Formula 1 count as sports for the glibertariat?
Sure. Although F1, like all corporate racing, has crawled up its own asshole and become pretty damn bland.
Rally is better.
This race is so dangerous, even the spectators have been killed.

Those spectators have it easy compared to this race:
https://youtu.be/-1SEgbolSF4
I love that movie.
I’ve reached the point where I don’t care much for any racing (ie. against the clock) sport. Not just car racing, but even things like track or swimming.
But you are not racing against the clock you are racing against other racers
I know people say that, but I still can’t get into racing sports that much any more.
I recall a hot minute back in ’03 I think it was when Moto GP was the beta test game (along with Mech Assault) for the fledgeling Xbox Live on original xbox. That got me into following some things for about 6 months or so….then I stopped caring again.
It does. But when Lewis Hamilton wins the poll that easily, I don’t see the point in following the race on Sunday. It’ll all be audio of him whining because back-markers aren’t getting out of his way easily enough or complaining that the team gave his teammate as good equipment as they gave him.
I dislike that fucker.

I got to stare into the eyeholes of a Klan mask while the percentage of Nazi sympathizers in America reached double-digits for the first time in the 21st century.
Two dipshits flipping you the bird doesn’t count as double digits.
The poll didn’t even reach 10%, so he’s stretching. And the way the question was worded, anybody that believes in the 1A strongly enough would have answered in the affirmative even if they find Neo-Nazis to be vile assholes.
Of course holding those views is “acceptable”. Part of living in a free society is accepting the rights of people to hold terrible views. When they violate the NAP, then we have a problem. But thoughtcrime is a bad fucking idea.
It’s right in the title:
“Survey: 9 percent call neo-Nazi views acceptable”
Read in Jerry Lungarden’s sputtering voice.
*Lundegaard*
It just still amazes me how in the past couple years how much the masks have come off. This used to be a film website they aren’t even pretending anymore.
“Two dipshits flipping you the bird doesn’t count as double digits.”
I think that that is literally double digits. Unless those two dipshits flipped him the bird with both hands. Then it would have been quadruple digits.
Do you even math?
…STEVE SMITH NOT GET CHANCE TO RAPE RELIGIOUS FIGURE VERY OFTEN. STAY STILL FOR WHILE…
That’s the joke.
“A second, even larger point the “respectability” complaint misses is how the museum includes the most profound invention that ever came from Black people. It wasn’t a life-saving invention, like gas masks or the polio vaccine. It didn’t help young people express themselves, like rock n’ roll. It’s not daps, the Tuskegee Airmen, hip-hop, public school, the West Area Computers, Free Breakfast, cornrows, or civil disobedience. It’s older than Emancipation, and in the long run, it can’t even benefit people, Black or white.
From its earliest passages, Slavery and Freedom acknowledges that whiteness—the engine of the American political machine—would not be possible without Black people. 15th century Europeans, reaping the rewards of the triangular trade, realized the profits would be unsustainable unless some adjustments were made to the ancient concept of slavery. Suddenly, Africans were subhuman.”
So black people invented whiteness. And whiteness is bad. Yet this whiteness can only continue because of blackness. So you want to double-down on blackness?
Wait, my whiteness is black people’s fault? I want reparations!
I thought genetics, natural selection, and living with limited sunlight invented whiteness.
Oh, never mind. He’s dead.

Fun short interview with the designer.
Speaking of charities, I heard somebody talking about the “good work” Habitat for Humanity does, and how they should build more houses for poor people to alleviate the regional housing *crisis*. At least a decade ago, my dad was looking to make some charitable donations, but instead of just shoving a check in an envelope, he did some homework. He said he considered Habitat to be a criminal organization, based on what he found. Pretty much on par with the Clinton Foundation, I guess.
He gives money to the Salvation Army. He says they have the highest rate of funds getting passed through to the donors’ intend uses.
They built a house for my grandmother. I don’t know much more about them than that.
The bigger the charity, the more they have to spend on operating expenses and advertising. When I worked at a chapter of Easter Seals I watched my boss twist those numbers up-down-allaround to make it look like about 80% of every dollar donated went directly to the programs we sponsored. He was able to get it that high by dividing the salaries of the office staff – secretary, fund raisers, office manager, program coordinator, and CEO (of local chapter). Of all those staff positions only the program coordinator spent her day administering some of the local benefit programs. She was also paid the least, by far.
If you took out operating costs, I think I calculated something like 25% or less of each dollar donated was going directly to the people we were helping.
If you want a higher percentage of your dollar to go directly to those in need, giving to small, local charities is usually the best way to go.
Anyone listen to the latest 5th column? I’ve had a man-crush on Kmele ever since The Independents. Now he’s the only one who’s not infected with Trump Derangement Syndrome. And he says some pretty disparaging (and occasionally hilarious) stuff about Trump. But Welch actually said Trump’s Charlottesville comments were a racist dog whistle not because of the words therein, but because 95% of Journalos said so.
Are you saying Kmele and Welch are slowly to be lost?
I thought Welch was already lost a while ago. It’s sad too, as he was originally one of the only writers over at Reason that I pretty consistently liked.
No, that Kmele is the coolest head, and least susceptible to group-think.
I have man crush on Moynihan. Probably the least libertarian guy of the group, but also the funniest and he hates Noam Chomsky almost as much as I do
He’s the star of the show, for sure.
His “accents” crack my shit every time
Moynihan is certainly funny, but also a statist poser. And he interrupts more than Kennedy, only in a worse way. Best shows are when he is absent. He makes Welch worse by feeding the TDS.
The guy that said that if he had actually cared enough to go vote, he would’ve voted for Hillary? He’s probably the biggest reason I stopped listening to the 5th Column podcast.
He might have. Like I said, he’s the least libertarian by far, but he’s also the funniest and usually the most well read.
I also still like Welch. He has TDS, but he’s still pretty much what he’s always been: a cosmo-libertarian. Not my cup of tea, but there’s a place for that.
The jacket, on the other hand, has gone completely off the damn rails and is basically useless as a commentator at this point
Moynihan is the reason I stopped listening. The episode covered the David Duke endorsement of Trump, and Moynihan said the Mises Institute was a bunch of proto-white nationalist. The TDS was tiring (with the exception of Kmele), but that slander was too much.
How could anyone who claims to be a Libertarian call the Von Misses Institute white supremacists? Moynihan is a epic idiot.
They refused to sign the pledge some random site put up denouncing racist. They shoved it in the Mises guys faces and screamed, “Sign it, or you’re a Nazi!”. The Mises guys rightly told them to go you know where and do you know what.
Fix the cable?
Moynihan is THAT epically idiotic. I wouldn’t be surprised if his main reason for his smear is that LvMI is headquartered in Auburn, Alabama.
However, LvMI doesn’t help itself when its chairman speaks of “blood and soil and God and nation” — even though he was being descriptive of how real people feel rather than prescriptive of how people should think. Fascists are pretty explicit about “Everything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state”. LvMI libertarians self-describe as the “enemy of the state” and coined the term “anarcho-capitalist”, which is the polar opposite of fascism.
Moynihan is still worth a listen on TFC since he an articulate voice of the cosmotarian left-wing fringes of libertarianism, and he’s not as annoying as the Jacket.
If Moynihan is the left wing of a political ideology that I support, then that has to be a win for liberty
Gavin Mcinnes called him “Sexy Mr. Burns”.
Welch is making me cry.
he’s realizing he has little career prospects outside of being the best-looking shill for Reason dogma, and must tow lions. i don’t think his heart is in it because occasionally he admits the truth
I was going to say it’s a slow links comments day but then I remember you have some sort of holiday and you are all probably drunk already.
*hits a bowl of Lemon Skunk*
Drinking? Not at all. Though I am suddenly quite hungry.
Part of living in a free society is accepting the rights of people to hold terrible views.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. What are you, some sort of Nazi?
“Free speech is to operate within a framework of not offending people.”
This is an actual (paraphrased) quote from a composite of people. It’s grotesque.
I tell you one thing, having listened to Jordan Peterson explain the Liberal party’s Bill C-16 and how it criminalizes biology (remember, the left fucking loves science – except for sex and gender), (not to mention their discussion on Google’s nefarious algorithm game to engage in content discrimination), I’ve been left quite concerned if not outright disturbed.
Free speech is to operate within a framework of not offending people.
Except that isn’t really what these people think. Not in the least. They’re all too happy to see people not in their club insulted, offended, smeared and tarred. And, honestly, if I thought it could ever be rolled back, I’d welcome them being forced to live under the rules they’re all too eager to impose on everyone else. Burned an American flag? Off to the gulag with you! Insulted Christians with your ramblings about the Crusades? Off to the gulag with you! Made a speech wishing for the extinction of white men? Off to the gulag with you! Called Trump supporters a bunch of racist hicks? Off to the gulag with you!
Within a week of their suggested policies being honestly implemented, at least half of them would be thrown in gulags.
BUT IT COULD NEVER HAPPEN HERE!

#18 looks like my old mutt.
Welch actually said Trump’s Charlottesville comments were a racist dog whistle not because of the words therein, but because 95% of Journalos said so.
I’m surprised Welch hasn’t weaseled his way onto the roster Morning Jokesters.
It’s interesting how people like him who are vastly more well-informed than I am, and probably quite a bit smarter seem to simply echo lefty talking points and socially signal on some issues, but are thoughtful on others.
It’s interesting how people like him who are vastly more well-informed than I am, and probably quite a bit smarter…
What makes you so sure of those things? I respect, or at least respected, Welch. In terms of the cognoscenti, he was one of the smarter and better informed. But, it isn’t clear to me, by a long shot, that he’s some sort of three or four standard deviation intellect. He’s well dressed, well groomed and knows the right buzzwords. Really, it isn’t a skillset any of the writers here couldn’t pick up in a week.
I don’t think too many people could pull off dressing like him.
I totally agree. None of them have particularly impressive intellects. People with impressive intellects and with something to say can get better and higher paying jobs than working as journalists.
I think that a lot of the TDS that Welch and the other journalos have is because Trump is fucking up the business model of Media. They are worried that if Trump starts breaking all the rules, that soon they will actually have to start working. No more getting hand fed some “scoop” by an unnamed bureaucrat.
If you are Welch, you have a good gig being a guy who goes on talk shows and blathers on about something. That is how you make your living. You are good at it and can make some pretty accurate insights on what is going on because you know the rules. Now Trump arrives and all your predictions on what happens next look like shit because he isn’t following the rules. If your predictions are now shit, why pay you to come talk on TV?
A ton of this is just because Trump is upsetting the gravy train a lot of these “smart” people have been on.

Krugabe weighs in
The waters are receding in Houston, and so, inevitably, is national interest. But Harvey will leave a huge amount of wreckage behind, some of it invisible. In particular, we don’t yet know just how much poison has been released by flooding of chemical plants, waste dumps, and more. But it’s a good bet that more people will eventually die from the toxins Harvey leaves behind than were killed during the storm itself.
Oh, and if you trust the current administration to handle Harvey’s aftermath right, I’ve got a degree from Trump University you might want to buy. There are already signs of dereliction: Many toxic waste sites are flooded, but the Environmental Protection Agency is conspicuously absent.
Anyway, Harvey was an epic disaster. And it was a disaster brought on, in large part, by bad policy. As many have pointed out, what made Houston so vulnerable to flooding was rampant, unregulated development. Put it this way: Greater Houston still has less than a third as many people as greater New York, but it covers roughly the same area, and probably has a smaller percentage of land that hasn’t been paved or built on.
Houston’s sprawl gave the city terrible traffic and an outsized pollution footprint even before the hurricane. When the rains came, the vast paved-over area meant that rising waters had nowhere to go.
It were Trumponomics wot dunnit.
But does the growth in the years without disaster outweigh the damage?
How many deaths in Houston? How many buildings destroyed? Compared to other cities that experienced the same level of flooding.
Katrina deaths: 1,836
Cost: estimates from $108b to $250b
Sandy deaths: 147
Cost: approx. $75b
Harvey deaths: 40 – 50ish
Cost: still coming in, upwards of $180b estimated
It’s almost like Mother Nature doesn’t give a shit about regulations.
The Boatswain from Tempest agrees:
None that I more love than myself. You are a councilor. If you can command these elements to silence and work the peace of the present, we will not hand a rope more. Use your authority. If you cannot, give thanks you have lived so long and make yourself ready in your cabin for the mischance of the hour, if it so hap.—Cheerly, good hearts!—Out of our way, I say.
No disaster can get wasted.
I’ll bet those eagle-eyed Times readers really hammered him over that one!
Seriously, the man couldn’t be arsed to look this up on Wikipedia?
Metro Houston: 10,062 sq. mi.
Metro NYC: 13.318 sq. mi.
Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize-winning economist, thinks that one number being 75.6% of another number makes them “roughly the same”. And he admitted to just guessing that more of Houston is paved than NYC is. I imagine his process went something like, “Well, we’ve got Central Park. QED.”
Houston rose from being a backwater to overtaking Chicago within probably 10 years to be the third biggest American city, while most American cities (including all larger) have hemorrhaged people. Yeah what an example of shitty development.
So, Trump is keeping his promise to his voters to destroy mama Gaia for fun and profit? Where’s the problem here?
I’m guessing he doesn’t mean the right way to “handle” it is to “do nothing, because it’s a local issue”.
How many deaths in Houston?
The death toll seems astoundingly low, to me. Of course, that enables Krugabe to get away with his noxious claim, But it’s a good bet that more people will eventually die from the toxins Harvey leaves behind than were killed during the storm itself.
Krugabe and his commenters are all convinced a cadre of high minded geniuses could roll up their sleeves and design a perfect society, if only we libertarian spoilsports would cease our bitter clinging to the illusions of choice and individual agency and let them get on with it.
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
“Krugabe and his commenters are all convinced a cadre of high minded geniuses could roll up their sleeves and design a perfect society”

Signs of a child being part of a hate group
If your child is involved in a hate group, these early warning signs may be a clue:
Sudden lack of interest in school.
Adopting new groups of friends and staying out late without any explanation.
Violence or secretive behaviour.
Overt hostility to parents and family, disobedience, rudeness.
Racist graffiti, drawings and doodling.
Playing loud, heavy music with violent lyrics.
Stereotyping and scape-goating of certain groups; name calling, racial and religious slurs in conversation at all times.
Making racist or bigoted comments about minorities, immigrants or foreigners.
A marked repugnance to consider certain ethnic or religious groups as fully Canadian or even human.
Wearing or displaying Nazi propaganda and symbols such as swastikas or the Iron Cross and/or military clothing and paraphernalia.
Changing their appearance.
Not recognizing banana peels for the swastikas they are.
Claims to “love not hate”.
Won’t suck a tranny dick.
Starts every conversation with, “As a [ethnic or gender group],…”.
“Sudden lack of interest in school.
Adopting new groups of friends and staying out late without any explanation.”
Er. That was, like, me when I was a kid.
“Overt hostility to parents and family, disobedience, rudeness.”
This is problematic as it is a generalization. It suggests there aren’t other reason for this behaviour; which of course there are. One of them being the rite of passage of being a temporary rebel.
“Playing loud, heavy music with violent lyrics.”
The ghost of Tipper Gore’s flapping vagina lives.
“Making racist or bigoted comments about minorities, immigrants or foreigners.”
We called them jokes and they were funny as hell; especially Newfie and Chink jokes.
“Changing their appearance.”

Interesting strategy. Forensics and DNA have made it much more difficult to get away with murder especially for a husband who will always be the prime suspect. So this guy decides he’ll play the mercy card. I’m doubtful it will work. They already get greedy and up the life insurance right before. Bet he did that.

Why can’t we be more like France?
The National Labor Relations Act was written in the 1930s, when big factories and large industrial companies dominated our economy; its provisions are a terrible fit for today’s economy in two basic ways.
First, because it arose out of the struggles of factory workers with big corporate employers, our labor law encourages bargaining at the employer or work-site level. This made sense when most workers were in large factories. But today’s workplaces are much smaller, even if they are owned or controlled by big corporations. Fast food workers are split among thousands of locations. Janitors labor in small groups, at night, out of the public eye. Warehouse workers in Wal-Mart and Target’s supply chains are often employed by temporary agencies and hired by day or even hour to load trucks. Uber drivers and Amazon delivery drivers work alone.
Second, our labor law holds businesses accountable only to the workers whom they “employ” in an old-fashioned, contractual sense. That too made sense in the industrial era, when leading companies had millions of employees. But today, janitors, Amazon delivery drivers and warehouse workers are often employed by subcontractors who have little real power over their livelihoods. And Uber and Lyft drivers are misclassified as independent contractors. As a result, these workers don’t have clear rights to bargain with the companies that actually set the rules. And these workers are subject to big restrictions on striking or picketing against such “third party” companies.
We need industry-wide wage controls. Because that makes total sense. Maybe we should just nationalize all businesses, and make everyone a government employee, to ensure fair treatment for all. And that would guarantee equitable and fair allocation of resources. That’s never been tried before. I bet it would work.
“…leading companies had millions of employees…”
Is that true?
I guess, on reflection, he may have meant collectively.
That’s a good idea, but just to make extra-sure that fairness prevails, all of these employees should be forced to join a government employee union like the AFSCME or SEIU. I mean, how else are these organizations going to keep giving billions and billions of dollars to Democrats?
Yes, let us make it even more difficult for people to do work and get remuneration for it. Nothing is going to help the economy like driving more people out of it.
We need industry-wide wage controls.
Minimum wage for all lawyers. Because none of them do anything worth more than that.

Steve Mnuchin is vying with Jeff Sessions for “worst Trump appointee”. Sessions is probably worse, but only because he’s in charge of a bureaucracy that can get away with a lot more violence. What is his redeeming quality? Worked for Goldman Sachs, was a hedge fund manager, then an investment banker. He plays political games then says “Congress has to put politics aside”. This guy would be right at home in the Bush or Obama administrations.
IF he shows up to work, he is better than Sessions. WTF does Sessions do all day now that he is done drafting that memo on asset forfeiture? What a waste of space Sessions is.
I dunno that I like the metric of “showing up for work”. I mean, yeah, in the private sector earning your paycheck is the right way to view it. But in the public sector, “earning your paycheck” means making other people’s lives difficult. In Mnuchin’s case, I imagine showing up every day results in finding new and more clever ways to pretend that government debt has no consequences.
Make me AG and I will show up to work. There is a lot of work to be done at DOJ. Understand, the people at DOJ are not going to like it very much. But I will show up to work and work very hard.
Fair enough. You’d probably also make a good NSA. Anybody who doesn’t instinctively protect the system above all else is usually okay in my book.
The one similarity that tend to tie together the worst of the Trump nominees is that they’re loyalty hires rather than “best man for the job” hires like Pruitt, Tillerson, and DeVos were. I know that Trump, out of all of the recent presidents, needs loyalty the most because of how much of the political establishment is against him, but it still isn’t a good thing if loyalty blinds you to negatives.
I’m pleased that Mnuchin is the exception rather than the rule. One of my biggest fears about Trump was that he would just appoint a bunch of New York liberals* to every position. Still, this guy is a real shithead and is right at home in the swamp.
* = This was before the left went insane, my definition of “liberal” is relative to the norms of ca. 2008 rather than 2017.
If Trump is liberal, he would be so Blue Dog that he gets kicked out of the mainstream party a la Jim Webb. If he ran as a Democrat on tax reform, pulling out of the Paris Accords, and ending DACA, he would be tarred and feathered and cane-whipped Singapore-style. The old healthcare for all rhetoric wouldn’t even be relevant.
I don’t think Trump really cared about being liberal or conservative much until fairly recently. My fear wasn’t that he was a closet liberal running as a conservative, but rather that his perspective valued things, like loyalty as you mentioned, that don’t have any ideological moorings, and since he was from New York, this would lead to an effectively liberal bias.
For the most part, it seems he meant what he said when he was campaigning, and is willing to pick appointees for many positions (including, and perhaps especially, judges/justices) that are conservative or libertarian rather than friendly/loyal to him.
I can appreciate that he is the first mainstream, non-Tea Party Republican to mostly stick to his agenda and focus on his voting base rather than the whims of public polls.
As much as I don’t like establishment Republicans, one thing that I appreciate about the Right in general is that even on the ideological edges, they’re way more accepting of diversity of opinion and people that don’t 100% tow their line, which is what made Trump possible. It makes the tent far larger than the insane Left, which must make Bill Clinton very sad RN.

Another horror story from public education. Poor kid.
Maths?
Yes. Do you speak American Pigdin or something?
I hesitate to argue linguistics with someone who probably knows far more about the subject than I do, but it’s the Internet, so…
Doesn’t a language (in this case, American English) need to have two other languages influencing it to be considered a pidgin? Or, alternately, doesn’t a pidgin have to be formed from the influence of one language upon another? What is the other language, besides the Queen’s English, that significantly influenced American English?
I was joking. But yes, a pidgin is a simplified mixture of two or more languages, where no one learns it as a first language. That having been said, in a phonological sense, various American dialects have been significantly influenced by Dutch and German.
Ok, if we’re going to approach this semi-seriously, aren’t pidgins strictly or predominantly spoken languages? That is, they may occasionally get transcribed as a form of documentation, but users of the language don’t generally write it down. Literacy seems strongly connected to “full languages”, e.g. nobody gets taught to read and write Nigerian pidgin, they get taught to read and write English but may continue to speak pidgin.
Not necessarily. Take an example of a place that has a gazillion local languages, like someplace in Africa or Indonesia/Papua New Guinea. Say person A, speaks Ooga, and person B speaks Booga. They both work in the city and meet each other. They don’t speak each other’s language, but they can communicate in a common pidgin. Now say they fall in love and have children. Their children will probably be raised with the pidgin as their first language, thus the pidgin becomes a creole. In the process of creolization, people write primary texts in it and literacy in it begins. Haitian Creole is a good example. If you’re interested in learning more, I’d recommend John McWhorter, as that is where his good work is in.
Evidently. We had a math teacher, not a maths teacher.

In most of these stories the teacher looks more like the sex witch on the sidebar, but this is much more in line with what my K-12 teachers looked like.
I wrote the story ahead of time. Here’s the relevant excerpt:
…and how did Atlanta Falcons ownership respond to their humiliating loss in the Super Bowl, the worst such loss in history? Did owner Arthur Blank fire head coach Dan Quinn, a white man? Did they cut Matt Ryan and replace him with Colin Kaepernick, whose defense let him down in the Super Bowl against Baltimore? In other words, when Atlanta, a city steeped in black culture, was embarrassed on a national stage to an unprecedented degree, the toxic whiteness that permeates Falcons’ management made no moves to erase the sting. Continuity is essential, was the message sent by white America through the Atlanta Falcons’ front office.
Enter College Station, Texas – a city less than three hours from Jasper, the city that dragged James Byrd Jr. to death, in a state that delivered more votes to Donald Trump than any other – and the decision made by the powers that be to remove Kevin Sumlin from his position as head coach. All of a sudden, continuity is no big deal anymore. Now, in the wake of a terrible loss comparable to that of the Falcons in the Super Bowl, changes have to be made. Well, the message is clear: if you’re a white coach, you’ve got all the time in the world, no matter how poorly you perform. If you’re a black coach and you fail similarly, you won’t have a job.

I am sure the other boys were not “Asians”. Nope. I bet they were typical Methodist Yabos. The British papers just failed to mention that out of fairness.
Yes, it is Birmingham, but are you denying that you can’t see a group of mini-Chavs doing this?
Yeah, I was the new kid at school at age 10. Not fun times. Got to the point where people would come up and ask me who I was fighting after school that night because it was just part of my daily routine.
Each day in Hell, these boys will be chased down by a pack of demons and have bleach poured into their eyes. This will be their daily routine for eternity.
The same goes for the public officials who cover this stuff up instead of prosecuting and punishing the attackers.
‘Open carry for swords’ now legal in Texas
“Thar kin only be one! Yeehaw!”
Nice to see Texas finally catching up with us here in NH. As a collector, knife laws are such an irritant and based in pure moral panic. There are no good knife laws except “don’t kill or maim people with them.”
It was illegal to carry a 6″ knife before. This is about machetes and big ass hinting knives, not swords.
As usual, the media are trying to make my state look ridiculous to score points. But I can tell you that if one of those pants-shitting Acela corridor dickheads came across a pack of wild pigs down on south Texas, he’d hope the Texan with him had a gun and a big ass knife to defend him with.
Like an elite “journolist” would ever go to South Texas.
Well he/she might in order to cover a group of deplorable rural hicks in a negative light and then stereotype them at everyone not living in an urban paradise.
But they’d be sure to stay in the nicest hotel in the nearest city with >250k people to make sure they weren’t overexposed to redneckitis.
It’s worth noting that even after this new law, Texas is still more restrictive than NH.
Though, you do need some way to defend yourself up here in this drug-infested den.
WHER MUH OHPEEOIDZ?

In other Texas law news, they’ve modified the underage drinking law as of this month. Now, if you report a sexual assault (of yourself or anyone else) to a Title IX coordinator, you become immune to any charges for underage possessive or consumption of alcohol to which you may habe
Ugh, “you become immune to any charges for underage possession or consumption of alcohol to which you may have been exposed”. Stupid phone.
Reading between the lines, does that mean Texas wants men to be punished harder for drunken sex on campus than they already are?
It seems to follow from a recent trend of States granting immunity to underage drinkers when they call the cops to report an overdose. The language is almost identical, but references sexual assault instead of overdosing, and includes an additional qualifier that the person can report the instance to a Title IX coordinator (in addition to the police)
Since making a false report to a Title IX coordinator isn’t a punishable crime even though doing so can still result in ruining a life, it seems like self centered college kids who know about this exemption would deploy it against some poor schmuck any time they’re at a party raided by the cops. The likes of Jackie Coakley and Emma Sulkowicz certainly would.
So anyone facing charges can just make up a report.
No, that completely foreseeable consequence is “unintended” and therefore needs to be ignored.

Steve Mnuchin is vying with Jeff Sessions for “worst Trump appointee”.
I’m certainly not leaping up to defend his honor, but I’m curious about your specific reasons for saying that. He mostly seems to be a nonentity, as far as I can tell. He mouths a few empty platitudes about “tax reform” now and then. Or is that exactly what you mean?
*still better than Larry Summers
Sessions is still waaaaay ahead in the “shittiest cabinet member” competition.
Sessions is hands-down the worst, but that goes with being the AG. Hell, I’d go so far as to say Holder and Lynch were even worse than Hillary and Longy McLongface were. And that’s no small feat in light of their ability to turn the ME and North Africa into a smoldering wasteland of Islamist terrorism.
He says we have to raise the debt ceiling or else we won’t be able to pay the debt service, which is patently false, and now he says we have to “not play politics” by playing politics and tying raising the debt ceiling to Harvey aid.
So he’s got “tell a big lie boldly” and “don’t let a crisis go to waste” which make the “spew empty platitudes” just the icing on the cake.
If he had instead said, “without a debt ceiling increase, the Treasury may be unable to meet all of the obligations Congress has laid out before us, and so I ask Congress to decide whether it wants to continue to increase the debt or pare back the obligations it has set” then I would view him quite differently. That is honest advice. What he is actually saying is DC establishment bullshit.

Surprise- another snotty douchebag weighs in, blames Houston’s lack of zoning for flood.
We do value our freedom here in Texas. As I write from soggy Central Texas, the cable news is showing people floating down Buffalo Bayou on their principles, proud residents of the largest city in these United States that did not grow in accordance with zoning ordinances.
The feeling there was that persons who own real estate should be free to develop it as they wish. Houston, also known as the Bayou City, is a great location because of its access to international shipping in the Gulf of Mexico. It is not a great location for building, though, because of all its impervious cover. If water could easily sink into the ground, there would be less of it ripping down Houston’s rivers that just a week ago were overcrowded streets.
In less-free cities, the jackbooted thugs in the zoning department impose limits on the amount of impervious cover in a development. Some of the limits can be finessed by lining parking lots with bricks turned sideways, so grass can be planted in the holes.
Newsweek. Worth every penny.
MUST. CONTROL. ALL. !!
It wasn’t the lack of zoning, it was the rainfall totals. This really isn’t that hard.
No shit. Planting strips or bioswales is not going to make that much of a difference with that amount of water. Also, water infiltration rates into soil is not fixed. Having not lived in Houston or worked with the soil, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that the infiltration rate during the summer of unpaved surfaces is not all that high.
I doubt that any of the experts at Newsweek ever considered the fact that soils in the Houston area are primarily East Texas black gumbo clay that are not very permeable, which means the doesn’t soak up rain water nearly as fast as sand or ordinary soil. And, once gumbo is saturated, there’s no place for the water to go anyway. Just how much water can a three-foot thick layer of impermeable gumbo soak up anyway?
Might as well complain that building codes in Bozeman aren’t up to the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano or that New York isn’t up to a giant meteor strike.
Pick the most stringently zoned city of over a million population. I guarantee you that it would flood if it got fifty inches of rain in a few days.
the jackbooted thugs in the zoning department
I imagine this was meant to elicit a chuckle, because of course the zoning commission does its own enforcement and who ever knew them to be anything other than milquetoast bureaucrats? Just ignore the man with the badge and the gun who shows up to enforce code compliance.
Also, aren’t these the same people who complain that housing is too expensive in many cities?
Cause and effect, how does it fucking work?
They might as well propose pouring out drums of Liquid-Plumber into the flood zones.

The US due to its strong Judeo-Christian background thus came to see male circumcision in a favorable light, but altogether neglected its female equivalent as they did not have such a tradition. Moreover it was an Islamic tradition, not a Judeo-Christian one.
Hmmm, well let’s do some basic math on this one:
Islam- 6th century.
Jewish circumcision- A lot older than that.
Isn’t the quoted text referring to female circumcision though?
Say what you want. If you take a blade to a pussy I will shoot you in the face.

Lauren just needs to give up on that and come hang out with us shitlords at the Glib.
Good for her. I’m just sad she didn’t have a hot take on that horrid “encroaching doom” music in the background.
“you guys at reason aren’t really libertarians at all, you’re corporatists who are willing to sell out your ideology, nation, and freedom to shill terrible advice from the Koch bros who fund you massivley and are very anti-Trump and pro-mass immigration. Luckily it looks like most people aren’t buying your bullshit.”
Reason’s problem is that they want to appeal to millennials, somehow believe that they MUST appeal to millennials, who are mostly leftists and about as hostile to liberty as one can possibly be.
“Kim Jong Un plays the biggest game of chicken imaginable. One can only hope a coalition of potential targets are formulating a defensive plan that eventually leads to a freer Nork people and no bloodshed. But I’m not holding my breath.”
The most reasonable course of action, from my view, is pushing back against China with Taiwan. North Korea and Taiwan were always counterbalanced against each other in our relationship with China, with the U.S. willing to play by China’s rules on Taiwan so long as China was willing to play by America’s rules on North Korea.
We should consider a state visit to Taiwan, or, better yet, a state visit of the President of Taiwan to the United States.
The current President of Taiwan is the first to speak directly with the President of the United States since 1979. She’s apparently not favored by China because of her support for a strong relationship between Taiwan and the United States.
If the new status quo is unacceptable and if shaking things up can be achieved with a mere invitation, then that invitation should already be in the mail. Contentious negotiations are won by the party with the most leverage, and we’re not using all the leverage we have available.
Given what’s been going on in Hong Kong, I think getting closer to Taiwan is politically sensible as well as militarily.
Agreed. Trade opens doors. Trade with a traditional ally at the expense of someone pulling the strings of a psychopathic madman like Kim tells the Chinese that we aren’t going by the retarded aolds playbook that always dismissed his bellicose overtures.
Kim is nuts. And we need to get China to take care of him before he attacks a real ally of ours and starts a shooting war/refugee crisis/financial meltdown.
One of the best things I’ve seen from MAD Magazine
yes. but sadly rockwell-references are going to go the way of the dodo as our parents all die off. no one will get the joke anymore.
they’ll change to this

I would argue that is some form of multidimensional cultural appropriation but i’m too busy fapping
Progressives’ identity politics obsession makes me think of this. It’s as is history is a blank slate.
I am having trouble believing this exists
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DIz3MGYXcAEFcQG.jpg
If it does, I trust it will be handled on twitter with all the respect that it is rightfully owed.
“If it does, it is in LA”
I do not mean to insult your home, i’m just making a probabilistic observation
also, “probabilistic” is a word invented by spellcheck
That’s the wrong soccer jersey for LA.
Dammit! pwned by spanish tourists?
Blunder Wo-Man!
I just threw up a little bit.
Look at the tard who wants her picture taken in front of it. I have trouble believing that exists also.
A day without completely replaceable people
I always say that if people want higher wages, they should shop around for a new job. If you can’t find one that pays more, then you’re already in the best position available to you, and you should stick around for the experience and start looking again in a year or so.
But skipping out on a scheduled shift to make a political point probably doesn’t bode well for your current or future employment.
Yeah, it’s sort of the opposite of what you want to do if you’re expecting higher pay.
But how did he get here in the first place?
People in Hell are like “Whaaaaat?”
Well, what I’m hearing is that this kid was a dreamer, so a hero. But all those rednecks who were rescuing people are not heroes, because. I’m sure the NYT has an article to explain it.
Could be true, and would be unsurprising.
could be completely made up for convenience
the only fact they have is “non-citizen drowned”. strange that they never actually quoted or named the person who owned the ‘boat’ that supposedly existed.
Story may or may not be true, like you said. But there’s no ethical reason to proclaim this guy a hero only because of his immigration status, yet declare the many ‘rednecks’ who put their own life on the line to do exactly the same thing, as not heroes. But that’s exactly what the left has done. Hero status, like everything else with them, is based only on identity, not deeds.
it would help if they actually had some quotes/names from the people he was “helping” in his still-just-imaginary boat
if he was there helping, and he was actually rescuing people, then bully for him, and i have no problem with giving him credit (even if its ahead of of the gringo yanquis who did far more) The problem is that there’s no actual evidence of that. They just seem to be taking a corpse and dressing it up in a superhero costume because no one will call bullshit, because its would seem “racist” to do so.
It’s easier to do that than explain why there are no swimming lessons in Mexico.

Fat, unhealthy social justice warrior expects to live to be 130 and harass the ‘patriarchy’ the whole way.
This reminded me of one of my jobs I had when I was in university. It was at a medical goods warehouse that basically distributed stock to local hospitals and other medical places like nursing homes. The pay wasn’t great and the shift schedule was ‘you’re here until the night’s work is done’. So sometimes you’d end up there until three or four in the morning. Fairly physically hard and accuracy was required. The staff was entirely men who’d work their asses off to ensure those medical faculties stayed supplied.
So those men work positions and hours that this fat cunt would never be able to do, supply the hospitals with the drugs and equipment that will probably keep this idiot alive (fortunately, in the U.S., not on taxpayer expense yet) all while she whines about how evil and oppressive they are.
My born day? Is that another slap at the patriarchy? I’m just going to get to the truth here. She’s just mad cause she fugly and none of the patriarchy want to bone her.
She gay son.
Oh, ok. Well in that case, she’s totally not a fugly man hater.
Why is “born” day less or more feminist than “birth” day? I mean, in either case, it’s her mom doing what’s about the most female work that can be done.
Also, I don’t believe that lesbians are attracted to fat, ugly, bald women any more than heterosexual men are. So what’s the deal? Is it like some, “Hey, we both look like a bag of dicks so let’s just run with it,” type of thing?
You know, this is a good point. Perhaps this has something to do with the high rate of domestic abuse among lesbian couples?
A lot of them are raging butch dykes, what should we expect? Women can be mean enough with normal hormone levels. You don’t want to be within a mile of one all hopped up on testosterone and rage.
A friend of mine thought they aren’t “real” lesbians. Her theory went that they either couldn’t attract men, or gave up trying, so they approximate a male appearance for their partners’ sake.
I don’t think they’re fat and dumpy because they can’t attract men. They can’t attract men because they’re fat and dumpy. There’s a reason lesbian bed death is a thing.
You guys are just wrong, sorry.
Fat women do not have any statistical disadvantage when compared to women of other BMI.
The percentage of the population who are “real” lesbians is likely to be around the same as “real” gay men : something like 1/5th of what the current picture painted by “tribal/cultural gayness” and bisexual erasure tells us.
Fat chicks who spend their time blaming every personal problem on all the men in the world are at a distinct disadvantage to fat chicks who are happy to cook a nice meal for you.
Dude, I hate to break it to you, but Erasure were gay as fuck.
Fat and dumpy women can attract some men, just not if they’re also a raging ranting cunt.
There is a whiff of WGTOW to it.
There’s about 100% your friend is correct in a good number of cases.
I’d like to see her GF. I bet she looks a lot like her. She could have sex with anyone, It’s just that she rejected those handsome guys and beautiful girls who were after her because they weren’t woke enough.
Yes, the patriarchy that carried her in their womb, apparently.
I liked this comment. Both of these things are not supposed to matter and yet at the same time are the only things that matter
Kristopher Kahn
“It’s stems from narcissism, a real lack of personality, and hobbies. SJW’s obsess over what is between their legs and who they choose to sleep with.”
I had nearly the same job for a while in college. The day shift would pick all the stuff and put it on pallets for the various hospitals. My job was to wrap the pallets and get them into the right trucks in the right order every evening. We didn’t go home until the last truck was loaded. I’m sure some of those supplies went to reprehensible people back then too.
They’re always full of derp over at DU, but today they are outdoing themselves. It’s nothing but one derp orgy about dreamers, Columbus statues, and purging the unpures who didn’t vote for Hillary.
It’s a good thing for us if they double down on the derp. I say let them keep making their tent smaller and smaller. Let them keep ranting about increasingly loony shit that is farther and farther removed from the concerns of ordinary Americans.
Apparently they’ve already banned a bunch of former comrades for admitting they didn’t vote for Hillary and now they’re on a raging witch hunt to find any closet dwellers who committed the deadly sin but never confessed it. When every single person on a site wants to tear down Columbus statues without a 2nd thought, you’re already in crazy land.
That Kirsten Dunst video… Yikes.
I’ll be grinding my axe.
I mean, part of me was, “What is this I don’t even,” and part of me just likes to see Kirsten Dunst.
Never been a big fan, but she lookedid damn good in that video.
Yeah she’s hot and unfortunately a ditz.
Was this Labor Day link posted yet?
All Hail The Union
Because we all know your job is a democracy.
We don’t have any Democracy left, Putin stole it.

Late to the party on the chiro post yesterday.

You’re welcome.
I can’t even watch that. Gives me the hebegebe’s
I guess you could skip to the voluptuous Italian girl in a thong getting adjusted and see if that helps.
I had a friend who’s a chiropractor, for many years. It was really great because I’d mess my back up and the guy would charge me $10 to fix me up. One thing I can tell you, there was more than one time I was in his office waiting when an incredibly gorgeous woman would come walking out of his office. I was jealous as hell. I would be thinking ‘I would fucking pay ‘her’ to let me get my hands all over her like that’.
I’d often wonder if he was banging any of these women. But I couldn’t actually ask him. He was a friend of my family and neighbor of my parents. He was also a religious every Sunday church guy with a very nice family and very pretty wife. So that was a no go thing to ask him if he was banging his patients. He was a good looking guy also, so that made me think it a little more.
How to properly ask that question
I love that rant.
Seriously.
Ya, seriously. He can fuck some girl up doing that and I will watch scantily clad young ladies doing just about anything, but that is not my thing. Nobody needs adjustments like that. Plus, someone just even cracking their knuckles is like fingernails on a chalk board to me.
It feels really good, seriously.
DON’T ANY OF YOU WORK?!
Trick question?
It’s a holiday and I’m likely to get mega-fucked by a giant hurricane this weekend, so no, I’m not working.
I dont know why everyone gets that wrong. The saying is “A possum in every pot” Brooks
I thought it was “a skunk in every garage” in Louisiana.
I’m working on my Porsche.
Sort of.
These euphemisms get better and better.
