Week 7 College Football Preview

Here is sloopy’s mandatory link.   I have nothing witty to say.

Tailgate of the Week

New Mexico St @ Georgia Southern, Statesboro, KY

I have been waiting all year to do this one, but this is GaSo’s first weekend home game.  The Eagles are having a very bad year [0-4].  This is appropriate.  Their fans want the coach fired and a Johnson disciple hired.  When they are running the triple option, they win.  When they aren’t, they tend to crash and burn.  Six FCS national titles in the first 19 years of the program’s restart (They didn’t have a team between 1941 and 1982) sets expectations.

Beer:  Eagle Creek Brewing Company appears to be the only local option, so it wins!  The video on their home page is all about Eagle football and tailgating so that gets bonus points.

Booze:  This is the closest FBS city to Savannah, and I wasn’t going to cover a game at a school (Savannah St) that is dropping to D2.  So this recipe goes here.

This picture was taken with the finest potato

Chatham Artillery Punch

2 cups sweet red wine
2 cups strong tea
2/3 cup rum
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup rye whiskey
1/2 cup orange juice
1/3 cup gin
1/3 cup brandy
1/3 cup lemon juice
1 bottle dry champagne

Mix all ingredients except champagne. Cover and refrigerate for several days. Stir in champagne just before serving.

Some recipes suggest burying in the ground for a few days to a few weeks.  This recipe dates back to the Revolutionary War, so refrigeration may be an appropriate substitution.

Game of the Century of the Week

Georgia Tech @ Miami, Coral Gables, FL

This series is tied at 11-11 all time, but that isn’t the important stat.  What is important?  Remember how the ACCCG was originally played in Jacksonville, then Tampa, because FSU and Miami were going to be in it all the time?

Number of ACC titles since the split into divisions:  GT 1, Miami 0.  Number of Coastal division title:  GT 4, Miami 0.

Top 25

The rankings are starting to look more like the traditional ones, with a few obvious exceptions.

Falling out:  Oregon, Wake Forest, Oklahoma, Duke.

We are going to get shellacked by Clemson tomorrow night, though I expect we’re going to keep it relatively close for the first 20 minutes, maybe the entire first half. Don’t have the horses to keep going past that though.

    1. robc

      Yes.

  2. Remember how the ACCCG was originally played in Jacksonville, then Tampa, because FSU and Miami were going to be in it all the time?

    No, I don’t.

    1. robc

      Good for you.

Had a Sierra Nevada Tropical Torpedo tonight. Stone Ripper does the same concept better.

      1. Brett L

Dogfish Head flesh and blood. Waste of blood orange juice since it just taste like Dogfish Head.

  3. Florida Man

I find your drink recipe scary and confusing. I’m not saying I wouldn’t drink it (I would) I’m saying I won’t invest the time and effort to make it.

    1. juris imprudent

It gave me a hangover just reading it.

    2. You can’t leave the alcohol alone for the several days of refrigeration necessary?

      1. Florida Man

        Correct.

    3. robc

I have been wanting to make it for about 10 years, but my friends don’t drink like we used to. Ifor I had known about it, I would have made it for a late 90s New Years Eve.

      1. MikeS

        +1 Party like it’s 1999

  4. DEG

    Eyes up? NEIN!

My company had an event at Pipe Dream Brewing. They had some good beer. I recommend the chocolate peanut butter stout. I was pleasantly surprised by their Coffee Kölsch and their regular Kölsch was good too.

    1. Stillhunter

      Alt text spot on!

    2. Chocolate peanut butter stout? Coffee kölsch?

GET THE FUCKING FUCK OUT OF HERE!!!!!!

      1. DEG

        NEIN!

          1. juris imprudent

How much did the rating between those two vary? I know someone in MN that travels out my way – I’ll see if he can bring along a sample or two.

          2. MikeS

Not a lot. The Sweet Baby Jesus sounds good to.

If you have a connection that can get you Dangerous Man’s PBP, exploit it. It is amazing.

    3. Homple

What’s next from that “brewery”? Ketchup and Dill Pickle IPA? Kohlrabi and Onion Lambic?

Somewhere, Gambrinus is urging Thor to deliver a lightning strike.

  5. straffinrun

A half cup of packed brown sugar is asking a lot of her. “Oh no you diddin!”.

  6. Since this is also going to be the open NLDS thread:
Shaky start for Gonzalez on the hill for the Nationals.

    1. robc

      Roark will be in soon.

      1. He escaped with only allowing one run. But damn, was he all over the place. Almost threw that one pitch over the backstop.

He’s looking a lot more like Rudi Stein than Amanda Wurlitzer.

        1. robc

So the game is going to end on a failed inside the park grand Slam? Spoilers!

          1. No inside the park homers in the 9th, please. The one on Monday almost gave me a heart attack.

    2. Evan from Evansville

I am going to heave a heart attack.

  7. Hyperion

    2 cups sweet red wine
    2 cups strong tea
    2/3 cup rum
    1/2 cup packed brown sugar
    1/2 cup rye whiskey
    1/2 cup orange juice
    1/3 cup gin
    1/3 cup brandy
    1/3 cup lemon juice
    1 bottle dry champagne

For some reason my wife always scolds me for mixing alcohol. She says it’s bad. Next time I’m annoyed with here, I’m totally making one of these. I mean not one, but all of it.

  8. Hyperion

    Be afraid sheeples.

    NORKS

Also, even one small inhalation of marijuana can kill you and everyone in your family, and everyone you’ve ever known and everyone they’ve ever known, and even people who are already dead.

    1. 90%? Who wrote that, the dude expecting a fat subsidy to prevent it?

      1. Hyperion

        “Who wrote that”

        Someone who’s full of shit.

          Linsdey Graham then.

      Oh boy. EMP.

          Nice.

  9. Number.6

    I HATE MEMORY EFFECTS
    BUT I’M DUMB AND HOPELESS

OT, but a plea for help.

Long story very (by my standards) short.

Horribly inconvenienced by the failure of, and inability to charge of some allegedly rechargeable small batteries. Recommendations, anyone?

Ideally I want ones that can sit around charged for over 6 months – I don’t mind them leaking some charge – but I want to be able to recharge them afterwards and have them store at least 75% of their rated charge.

    1. Scruffy Nerfherder

      What size?

      1. Number.6

AA, AAA. Not particularly high current drain.

        1. But Enough About Me

Eneloops. They’ve been solid as a rock for me. I use ’em in all my portable electronics, including my photo strobes. Pricey and worth every penny. Made by Sanyo.

      2. Scruffy Nerfherder

My general opinion on small rechargeable batteries is that lithium ion is the only worthwhile type. I usually just buy lots of good brand name batteries and store them instead of using rechargeables.

        1. Number.6

That’s fair enough. Chances are that rechargeables will be exposed to high ambient temperatures at some point and lose their capacity anyway. Have a copper top get cooked, you just throw it away and pull one out of that 24-pack you just picked up on special.

          1. Scruffy Nerfherder

The Amazon brand batteries are equivalent quality to Energizer and Duracell and they’re cheap. And they come in a box instead of one of those damn blister packs.

          2. Number.6

Probably made in the same factory anyway. Thanks for the heads-up. Timing is great – I’ll just add ’em to this order of Celox and Hyfin vents that I hope I never need to use.

          3. Yusef drives a Kia

Bad idea mixing voltages, which is what happens when you change only one cell

        2. Do NiMH tend to degrade?

          1. Yusef drives a Kia

after about a year, yes they do no matter how you care for them,
I suggest Lipo batts, and for battery packs, a good balancing charger

          2. Number.6

I’ve got a ‘smart’ Nitecore charger that seems to do a great job recharging some 18350’s, and I think it’ll be great for AA/AAA.

    2. CPRM

I have Rayovacs I bought in 2003 that still recharge, although now they only last a few hours, but enough to recharge the newer ones.

“Bruce Arena Says He Has No Interest in Coaching USMNT For Next World Cup Cycle”

You can’t fire me, I quit!

    1. Juvenile Bluster

I’m still pissed off they didn’t fire him before the team left the field.

But then again that’s why Gulati needs to go as well. Hopefully he doesn’t bother to stand for reelection.

      1. peachy rex

The post-game comments from Arena and Gulati were pretty revealing, and underlined why crapping out completely was probably the best outcome – shit wasn’t going to get fixed any other way, and better to get the process started now before the old guard has a chance to fuck up *another* generation of players.

        1. juris imprudent

Hopefully part of the new coaching standard in the U.S. will involve playing the ball to a team-mate when you get possession. I have never seen any team that blindly headed away the ball like the U.S. does, and I’m not just talking about Gonzales. Between that and Bradley’s back-passing… grrr.

          1. Juvenile Bluster

We need to completely overhaul the youth system in this country. More to the academy-type standard, because kids travel/club soccer is more about status and less about development and talent.

  11. Scruffy Nerfherder

Started watching The Bad Batch on Netflix. Haven’t finished it yet.

That is one seriously fucked up movie. Sugarfree worthy. Maybe even Episiarch worthy.

  12. Raven Nation

Sports related, this was the lead story for most of yesterday at BBC Sports (it’s about Kaepernick): http://www.bbc.com/sport/american-football/41530732

Headline: Colin Kaepernick: From one man kneeling to a movement dividing a country

Quote: “He is very, very smart and very intellectual. He’s a very deep thinker. What he’s doing is absolutely and directly in line with how he’s always communicated.”

    1. Number.6

“The threat of blue balls didn’t help either”

    2. Scruffy Nerfherder

      Yeah, ok.

    3. juris imprudent

He is very, very smart and very intellectual. He’s a very deep thinker.

And shit as a QB. He is the Tebow of the left.

      1. robc

        Tebow Reference! Paging Baked Penguin.

    4. MikeS

Oh fer fucks sake. The worst part of this whole kneeling bullshit is that I still have to hear the name of the QB that cost my Niner’s a sixth (and maybe seventh) Super Bowl win. Fuck him for pretending to be woke so he can get some pussy, and fuck him for making the 49ers even more of a laughing stock than they deserve.

Fuck. Colin. Kaepernick. In. The. Ear. With. A. Baseball. Bat.

      Asshole.

      1. If Dom Capers were competent, the 49ers would never have made a Super Bowl with Kaepernick.

  13. Raven Nation

What are the general expectations for Johnson at Tech? Win an ACC title every 4 or 5 years? Expectations for a national title?

    1. peachy rex

Making a bowl more often than not. Conference titles for a school like GT will be few and far between, a combination of a recruiting coup at a key position and a down year for the conference powers; national titles are a pipe dream.

      1. robc

You way underrated us both historically and recently.

    2. robc

National titles come once per generation, it’s about time (1917, 1928, 1952, 1990) for another. I want one before Johnson retires. He has 1 ACC title, a few more would be nice. Division title every 3 or so years. Beat uga 2 out of 5 would be nice. A win this year and he will have 4 in 10. We have had 1 year in last 20 over 3 coaches where we didn’t make a bowl. That is expected every year. Johnson has his one pass on that.

      1. Pine_Tree

I’m just glad you’re the one choosing the ranking algorithm for the college football posts, ’cause otherwise I wouldn’t get that small bit of joy from just seeing GT up high on a chart.

  14. Chipwooder

#14! I don’t think we’ve been #14 in the actual polls in about 13 years or so.

Two wins to bowl eligibility! How far we have sunk.

  15. Ken Shultz

You know how the last season of South Park was screwed up by Trump winning the election? They’d assumed Hillary would win, wrote big story arcs assuming that, and when Trump unexpectedly won, it threw their whole story arc off. Suddenly whole plot lines evaporated into nothing . . .

I think the same shit may have happened to Mr. Robot.

Yeah, the series started off with a naive progressive world view, but that world view was consistently challenged by reality over the first two seasons. You started to see the patron saint of Asperger syndrome go from being completely oblivious to the feelings and concerns of the people around him to becoming increasingly concerned about the well being and even volition of strangers until . . .

They were all but calling out Obama as a fake and a phony. Mr. Robot seemed to be about the righteous nexus between Edwards Snowden and Fight Club.

Season 3 started last night, and now, suddenly, it all seems to be about Trump and the wall he wants to build on our border to imprison us and . . .

Gimmie a break. I thought the series was about a naive 21st Century, Millennial, Don Quixote, tilting at windmills without any conception of how what he did would impact the people around him and the world. It was about a Tony waking the fuck up.

Whatever it had to say before it had to say before Trump was elected. Now that Trump was elected, it’s all about that now?

After last night’s episode, I don’t know what the show is about anymore.

    3. butt-head

They’d assumed Hillary would win, wrote big story arcs assuming that

The arc being what? I haven’t gotten a good answer to this. It was apt to be a complete mess regardless. I hated the previous season of South Park.

    4. CPRM

MR. Robot sucked before the end of Season one. If you kept watching, that’s your own fault.

You had it right the first time

          1. MikeS

Your article only proves me right.

The Scots spell it whisky and the Irish spell it whiskey, with an extra ‘e’. This difference in the spelling comes from the translations of the word from the Scottish and Irish Gaelic forms. Whiskey with the extra ‘e’ is also used when referring to American whiskies. This ‘e’ was taken to the United States by the Irish immigrants in the 1700s and has been used ever since.

Since Scotch is the lowest form of whiskey, obviously whiskey (with an “e”) is the preferred spelling.

          2. Q Continuum

Scotch whisky is how I’ve always seen it.

I’ll never understand how kids can be so self-confident. I’m still not self-confident. How can people who very recently didn’t exist, and even more recently weren’t self-aware,—and even more recently were extremely egocentric,—be so sure of themselves and what they say about the world around them? I don’t trust anything about what I can do or say or that I think I know.

Trump is playing the media, congress, and the insurance industry like a harpsichord.

“The Trump administration intends to end billions of dollars in payments to insurers under the Affordable Care Act program, but President Donald Trump has told at least one lawmaker that the payments may continue if a bipartisan deal is reached on heath care, according to people familiar with the matter on Capitol Hill and in the health care industry.

The White House in a statement Thursday night said that based on guidance from the Justice Department, the Department of Health and Human Services has determined there is no appropriation…”

    —-Wall Street Journal

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-poised-to-end-subsidies-to-health-insurers-1507865484

Add to what I wrote earlier today about Trump pulling the rug out from under ObamaCare–now he’s setting the fucking thing on fire.

The exchanges will implode without those subsidies–and I don’t mean a few years from now.

Yeah, Trump will give them the subsidies the insurers, congress, and the exchanges can’t do without–just as soon as he gets serious ObamaCare reform from congress. I’d say you have to read between the lines, but it’s written there in flashing neon lights.

Maybe this seems obvious to people, maybe it doesn’t, but at the end of the day, Trump has been a pretty straight shooter.

He told us what he was going to do in Syria, and he did it.

He said he would fight for a wall, and he’s crushing the Dreamer’s dream–unless they fund a wall.

He said he would deregulate, and that’s what he’s done.

He said he would fight to reform ObamaCare, and that’s what he’s doing–over the objection of the Republicans who refused to pass anything.

Regardless of whether you agree with what he’s doing or has tried to do, gotta give him credit for, more or less, doing what he said he would do.

I give him credit for not going on the warpath for gun control in the wake of the Las Vegas tragedy either.

Hillary Clinton wouldn’t have done that. Hillary Clinton wouldn’t have done any of that.

    1. CPRM

I doubt Trump can play the harpsichord.

    2. Homple

Yup. He’s doing what he said he would in the circumstances he has to operate in.

      1. CPRM

Where were the Trump harpsichord ads? I would have loved to see them. Like this except at the end Trump Turns to the camera and says. “It’ll be great. It’ll be yuge. Thank you.”

Nats lose in a Nats way.

Eagles win a huge game over the Panthers and the refs to get to 5-1 and to get me just excited enough for it to be that much more crushing when we don’t win the Super Bowl again.

    I’m going to bed. Gnite!

    1. CPRM

But, did anyone KNEEL FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM? And if so, was it because Harvey Weinstein raped them? These are the real questions America needs answered.
