If these seem rushed, it’s because I’ve got to freeze my nipples off and drive to work this morning. Sloopy, on the other hand, is relaxing on a beach chair in Bali, drinking a cocktail out of a coconut-shaped cup with a paper umbrella.
Just from the headline, you know where this one is going. I note the after he left the Pittsburgh area, he moved to Florida, which seems fitting. Named his daughter “Lyric,” which I guess is the wypipo version of L’aQuan.
Another news story where I hate everyone. Obama, please go away. Trump, please shut up. British royals, get a fucking job and stop sponging.
OMG OMG TRUMP HATES TREES!!!!!!11!1!
I’ve got a great idea! If we have trouble counting votes, let’s figure out a way to shovel money at lawyers.
They left off the 11th thing: make it easy for “law enforcement” to spy on you. No way that shit is coming into our house.
And by the way, you people disappointed me in the movie thread yesterday- not one mention of Polyester.
OK, now your turn to suffer: Old Guy Music.
OMG OMG TRUMP HATES TREES!!!!!!11!1! – well trees are assholes ion general. Especially willows
A tree didn’t fall and everybody heard it.
Even pussy-willows?
Half good.
Everyone seems to be complaining about Newsweek’s coverage and misleading headline. I need to point this out:
The federal government, has experts on staff–for trees. WTF?
With an 11.6 million dollar appropriation (FY 15), no less. Amazing
Trees are the #1 cause of forest fires. Madam Trump, cut down these trees!
They left off the 11th thing: make it easy for “law enforcement” to spy on you. No way that shit is coming into our house. – why do you hate progress? I am getting two of the things
The Ghost of the Departamentul Securității Statului smiles.
My aunt bought a Google Home for my son. I’m not happy about it.
Why don’t you make the Google Home disappear one day, and replace it with something of greater value or cash equivalent?
I got one of those from my sister who lives 2000 miles away. Hopefully she’ll never know it was returned?
I hope Google takes it back if it’s never been opened. I would be happy with even a credit in return. Heck, I would even take S&H Green Stamps, anything! No way is that surveillance device staying in our house.
Another news story where I hate everyone. Obama, please go away. Trump, please shut up. British royals, get a fucking job and stop sponging. – considering his majesty Barak is the closest thing US has to royalty, he should attend.
Makes you wonder who these ‘government mandarins’ are (secret decode-ring usage indicates that they’re *British* government mandarins) and why they have jobs, because they’re lousy analysts. Of course, the prospect of an enraged Donald Trump, rampaging around the White House might make for an excellent “The hat and the hair” episode, but it’s hardly grounded in reality.
I’m all for the British gaining as much personal experience of dealing with Obama as possible. The British press are nowhere near as unified in their propaganda, and the slightest lack of deference to the Royals will tank his reputation. We’re on the hook financially for protecting this worthless POS’ life in perpetuity anyway, so we might as well let the Euros have him. I think it’s appropriate that a wedding for a “cuckoo” should include some koo-koos as guests.
For example, Barack received much ridicule from the public – though far less from the newspapers – when he gave the Queen an iPod loaded with his speeches. I’d like that replayed a thousandfold.
I had forgotten about that. What a douchenozzle.
His shitty speeches?
Man that guy is such a moron.
I knew something was off about Harry.
Dude, what the fuck? I got massive douche chills after reading that.
I only saw brief clips, but Obama seems to be slobbering all over the Prince. Maybe his ego will eventually take over and he will snub the royalty somehow.
The fun thing of course is that Obama’s slobbering over a guy whose connection to the royal bloodline is ceremonial and not actual. Perilously similar to Obama’s connection to being presidential, really.
Compare a picture of Harry with a photo of Charles, and then compare him with a picture of James Hewitt, and tell me what – as neutral observers – your reaction is.
He kind of looks like Web Hubbel.
Webb gets around.
By the way, I’ve been meaning to ask, recently you used the term “taff”, and prior to that, I spent several weeks in the UK. I found the few Welsh I met to be nice enough, and my attempted sallies into the local womenfolk were less unsuccessful than elsewhere so my impression was favorable, but the English I met seemed not to like them. Just wondering if you could expound upon the relationship.
Well, the origin of “Taff” originates from the River Taff that flows out into the Severn at Cardiff. The English have long seen the Welsh as culturally inferior, and it’s just another reflexive (but pretty benign) slur. As a society, Britons are encouraged via humor to denegrate the Scots, Irish and Welsh, because not so long ago (in some cases, as recently as 400 years ago!) London was trying to subjugate the scum.
The problem Wales has is that except for the coastal settlements, it’s rocky, barren and pretty useless land. The north Waleans and South Waleans have their own resentments, and the Welsh accent is easy to ridicule and hard to eliminate (except by fire and sword). A reasoned perspective is also hard to acquire when a certain Glib and I let go at each other in Latin and Welsh (genuinely, all in good humor I must add). The problem with Britons – as a group – and I know I’m stereotyping – is that even today, a huge percentage of ‘working man’ just don’t have reason to travel very far, and lack the necessary perspective to overcome regional stereotypes that are reinforced in media. Accents and vocabulary are still quite localized in Britain too, which doesn’t help.
I have no idea, though I suspect it’s the case – that there are a significant number of Flemish Dutch who consider Wallonian Dutch (and vice versa) in exactly the same way.
For the most part, the dislike of the Welsh and the other regions is reflexive (like so much common-or-garden racism). Not so long ago, you would have heard comedians on TV saying things like “People call me a racist, but really, I just hate niggers, kikes, gyppos, taffies, jocks, paddies, frogs, krauts and spics the same”.
But what about those skirt-wearing, shortbread-munching twats?
Jocks? We got jocks. Most of them are in London, running the government.
I just realized. Another non-portable colloquialism.
Agreed. It’s a commie love affair. They deserve each other.
It will be funny when Trump gets the invite and declines.
No shit.
“No thanks. I am a busy man. I have important things to do.”
It will be spun as him hating on black people.
To be fair, him going would be spun that way too.
I would put money on Trump accepting the invite.
And tweeting about how shitty the proceedings are.
So the judicial panel made the error but the Republican opponent is making the end run around around proper election procedure. Got it, thanks.
I’m waiting for the car trunk full of absentee ballots to show up.

Damn straight.
Good for her. The fewer the players the more tainted the title.
Wonder how long the Left can keep all these mutually-exclusive ideologies (i.e. Islamism vs. Feminism etc.) under one tent without them destroying each other…
Intersectionality is fun!
Society can stay inherently contradictory longer than you can stay sane.
DAMMIT! I missed the movie post because I was outside fucking around in the snow. A few random movies popped into my head in no particular order:
A Thousand Clowns
Henry V (Branaugh)
Richard III (Ian McCellan)
Titus
The Missouri Breaks

The Ruling Class
Dead Man
Go add them there, please. I’m keeping it as a link in the menu under Entertainment so it can be added to over time as a growing resource for everyone, or people can bookmark it.
I saw a headline about the tree, and did not read a word about it. I assumed the SS wanted a clear field of fire.
What would be truly awesome would be if Trump put a go kart track on the White House Lawn.
Mario Kart Racing would be a more fair and transparent process on deciding who should occupy The White House than the current system.
Millennial Take.
OMG! Trump’s White House is just like the Citadel in Minas Tirith!
Except the orcs are already running Gondor! When will Bernie, the Old White Guy ride in and throw down the tyrant? Hillary was just like Eowyn!
Symbolism!
Bernie as old white guy? You mean Saruman?
Well, the ‘bros would think Gandalf, I’m sure.
With a big enough dose of ignorance and irony, you could probably recast most of major characters in the series with democrats as heroes and republicans as orcs. I just can’t be bothered to google whether someone’s already done it.
It’s too bad the ‘Bros don’t get that the whole story was an analogy about Power. Gandalf could never be Bernie; Gandalf would know better than to try and govern or make promises he couldn’t keep.
^^^NERDS!!!!^^^^
Those are not Harry Potter references.
“Obama, please go away. Trump, please shut up.”
Not to defend Obama, but on a brief browse through that “story” I couldn’t see anything about him or his wife actually saying anything about this. Just “ZOMG, the prince became BFFs with Barry during his presidency, and now the British government is asking him not to invite him to his wedding because that evil, mean, nasty Trump might get upset!” Similarly, I didn’t see anything about Trump saying anything about this, so why does he need to shut up?
The Prince did a televised interview with Obama.
I noticed that. No word from Trump or the White House, just unsupported assertion.
I am wondering exactly what we would hope to gain by sucking up to England or why we would care what they think of us.
Here’s the issue, it doesn’t look as though this is an official State Wedding (there are lots of reasons why it shouldn’t be, based on precedent alone), which is one of the reasons this is getting the treatment it is by the press.
A State Event would necessarily require an invite to the sitting President of the US (along with invitations to the heads of states of just about everywhere else). The only reason this story is gaining any traction is that it’s following up on the change of status of Trump’s already-declared trip, which was downgraded. This was an exceptionally bad piece of statecraft, which everyone assumes Trump took personally (and arguably, he should – such a change is unprecedented w.r.t. an ally such as the US).
The (possible) lack of an invitation to Trump and the assumed snub in this case isn’t really a protocol issue. Harry’s wedding from a diplomatic perspective is a big fat zero. The Foreign Office in the UK will have already reached out to the State Department and pre-handled it. Assuming that Trump retains some staff at he SD who understand diplomatic protocols, this is a non-issue. The guest list will be full of airheaded celebrities that Meghan always wanted to meet, along with more airheaded celebrities that Harry wants to meet, the couple will be feted and adored, and lies will be printed about how Trump tore up the Oval Office in disgust, which will be disproven by a Tweet from Donald’s cell phone, and the game will go on.
The other night, I watched some crazy French gangster movie called “This Man is Dangerous” (I think). Subtitled, which I hate, but all in all it was a highly diverting show.
Ever seen Baise Moi?
If memory serves, that was rather, ummm, hard-core.
STEVE SMITH’S FAVOURITE NON-HIKER FILM.
Someone is into Emmanuel on Blue Nuit.
a recent French movie I enjoyed was The Prey
Convict escapes prison to save his kidnapped daughter and to retrieve his hidden stolen loot before someone else gets it. Also a serial killer thrown into the mix. I’ll rate it higher than the 6.7 that IMDB gives it.
Regards Prince Harry and The Royals –
In all of my time traveling, and now living, in the US, one of the most frequent questions I would get about being from Canada was ‘What do you think about The Queen being on the money?’ Not that I view Royalty or Presidents any differently (Fuck Off, all of you) but I do get the symbolic difference between ‘voting’ for a head of state, and inheriting one via bloodline.
I always tell people, right off the bat, that I’m one of those minority Canadian Republicans that wants rid of the monarchy. If the people I’m speaking with seem intelligent and non-Partisan, then I’ll see if I can lead them to a discussion on getting rid of the government altogether.

Teigen’s an attention whore’s attention whore. Hardly surprising we’d see her take in the whole event.
I don’t get why this is newsworthy.
She’s probably got a $10k/month contract with a publicist whose job it is to keep Teigen’s face on the front page of the Daily Mail.
Go add them there, please.

CNN is speaking truth to power right now, taking Trump to task for his hypocrisy on… presidents spending time on the golf course.
Are you surprised? See: Obama’s vacations were cool but George W. Bush’s were worthy of ridicule.
They don’t see how its different. You see, Trump owns the golf course, much in the same way Bush owned ranch in the middle of Bumfuck, TX. Where it’s easy for the SS to secure at regular intervals given the owner willingly makes concessions for them, with a “mini white house” set up inside–monsters, the lot of them.
And Trump is likely shutting down his own GC for the day, which means he’s likely costing himself some revenue.
I know at least one golf course complained about the Chosen One costing them.
Excessive Video Gaming to be Named Mental Disorder by WHO
How long until they start trying to regulate? Common sense video game control!
And who gets to determine what’s excessive?
Fuck off, slavers!
Ugh. By WHOM.
*narrows gaze*
They’re also trying to get into the industry through classifying lootboxes as “gambling.” Worse, a sizable amount of the gaming community cheers this development since they’re so mad at EA for ruining Star Wars Battlefront 2. They don’t understand that they are letting a much more dangerous beast into the henhouse.
They’re kind of dull that way.
Indeed. A good chunk of gamers hate all the microtransactions filling up AAA games, so instead of just, not buying them (either the MTs or the entire games) they cheer at government stepping in. When that happens, it’ll be a sad day for gaming. People are upset at the lack of innovation in the gaming industry now? Just wait until everything requires government approval before being released.
I’ve said for a long time that the industry needs impose norms of disclosure, with old-school torts for companies shown to lie about their disclosures. Doing so would give the consumers the information that I think is required for the market to be free, and would keep the bull out of the china shop (TW: I called porcelain “china”)
Looks like we may be getting half way there.
Its a good solution. I’d rather loot boxes just be out of games altogether (not because of govt, just simply by people refusing to buy them), but it looks like that won’t happen. I guess this is the next-best thing. The ESRB should really step in and enforce this rather than platform holders. I’d rather the ESRB say “oh, you want to put a quasi-gambling system in? Your game is automatically rated AO.” Maybe an M rating would be more appropriate. But what can I say? I really do want loot boxes gone.
It’s a Teenage Wasteland, really.

As far as the President playing “too much” golf- let him. Every President should have a hobby, preferably an extremely dangerous one like free climbing el Capitan or big game hunting with a tomahawk, which would keep his meddlesome ass out of the office.

Hell, I’d settle for this
Teddy Roosevelt used to skinny dip in the Potomac.
-1F degrees this morning. A good time to dismantle a bunk bed and put it into the garage. The dream of being adoptive parents seems to have died out after our one rotten experience; blame goes to the social worker and our own lack of experience with teenagers.
Also the last day of my holiday vacation. *sigh*
But at least I can get some writing done – a book project that I find difficult to do in the winter time since I get most of my work done in the car during lunch break. But not in this weather. Also going to increase the feedback in my DIY tube amp and knock down the B+ since it’s a tad higher than I wanted. I also have to go back to work on my wife’s car and try to figure out why the doors won’t open. Mechanical, or some kind of window positioning thing? Argh – given the crappy weather I may give up on that and bring it to a mechanic.
Are those the automatic windows that drop slightly when the door is open, then close when the door is closed?
Something to try?
I tried that with no luck – will try again today.
I remember a Volvo I had that would reset by cycling the key in the drivers door several times. For some reason, locking and unlocking the door did some voodoo that allowed some of the functions (windows, sunroof) to operate correctly after a new battery.
Frustrating.
Yessir – they aren’t dropping but of course I’m not opening the door. I played around with trying to reset ’em without any luck.
Odds are it’s a mechanical freeze up caused by differing materials and not enough slop to allow for temperature changes. I doubt it’s electrical.
Yeah that’s my thought – just weird that I was able to get into the car the first time (the battery is located in the boot), and start the engine. It was after I shut the door thinking my job was accomplished that the door stopped working.
A quick Google shows that the solenoid actuator is prone to failure. $130 plus 2 hours to fix.
The heat of the sun – even though it’s only 9F outside – was enough that the passenger door freed itself. I let the car run for awhile while waving a heat gun at the driver side door. And that opened too. Phew!
I’m sorry the adoption didn’t work out.
I also have to go back to work on my wife’s car and try to figure out why the doors won’t open. Mechanical, or some kind of window positioning thing?
Power lock malfunction?
The door plungers go up and down, But there is no mechanical resistance when you try the door handle, either inside or outside. Apparently a common issue with the first gen MINI (ala 2002-2006), especially in freezing temps. Only way to get into the car is through the hatch, which locks/unlocks properly (via the single mechanical lock on the driver’s door or the remote).
Other than the 8F degree weather, I replaced a battery yesterday. I was able to get into the car before that so I’m left very confused. Can’t find a similar situation online.
Thaw it out by setting it on fire. Only reasonable solution.
Oh I wish.

Come to think of it I just remembered the white guy who identified as a Filippino woman. He at least admitted he was unbalanced and didn’t seem to be trying to jam his disfunction down everyone else’s throat.

Bonus whining about enacting labor
Explaining my positions is hard!!
The strange commonality is that the authors in both cases labor under the delusion that they’re entitled to have white people (any people, actually) give a shit about them. That’s simply not true. I mean the white women they’re “working on” is really under no obligation to really give a shit about their feelings. And my guess is that, unless she’s similarly deranged, dropping them like hot potatoes would do nothing but good for her own happiness and peace of mind. Rathing than worrying about “discounting their struggles”, she’d be free to laugh at them as imbeciles.
If you constantly harp about race, see everyone in relation of their race, see everything through the lens of race then you are the walkin’, talkin’ definition of a racist.

“We’re not just tired. We’re exhausted. We’re bone weary.”
Then why don’t you stop? No one is asking you to do this nonsense. How about you grow some thicker skin and learn to deal with words you don’t like.
They’re not tired at all, that’s a straight up lie.
They do this because they want to, because it brings them attention, because it makes them feel important, because it brings them moral authority and power.
The whole tired and weary bullshit is part and parcel of the martyr act they love to put on.
“We’re not just tired. We’re exhausted. We’re bone weary.”

FIFY
Honestly, I just don’t get it. I don’t see where people can think, “We have three choices:
1. We can calmly and rationally explain why the Church’s position on abortion is misguided or inconsistent with Christian doctrine.
2. We can simply opt for another religion that is more compatible with our beliefs.
3. We can steal baby Jesus.”
and decide option three is the way to go.
#1 is hard, because “Innocent life is sacred and an unborn baby is innocent life” is pretty consistant.
They’ve already done #2 by converting to feminism.
#3 is an attempt at iconoclasm of the blasphemers who have not converted.
This.
Just like everything else, when you attach “feminist” as an adjective to “Christian” or to “Catholic”, you become heavy on the feminist and light on whatever it modifies. This reminds me of some interactions I’ve had with Mormon feminists. Tossing out my inbuilt biases against Mormons, Mormon feminism is an oxymoron.
Good luck with #1.
It isnt about abortion. Or the church. She is just screaming “Look at me!”
Even if you can’t do #2, it’s not like the Church still has authority over you like a government has. If having an abortion is weighing on you mentally to the point of making you crazy, just go to the confessional and admit it; you’ll probably get told to say 200 Hail Marys and 500 Our Fathers and God will forgive you.
If it still makes you crazy, maybe you weren’t sincerely confessing or maybe you think you didn’t do enough. In that case, go give alms to the poor until you feel better.
If you’re still going crazy because other humans don’t forgive you, well that’s not the Church’s area of responsibility. The problem is people want absolution without penance or, even worse, approval.
Ehhh… unless it’s changed since I was Catholic, abortion still falls under the mortal sin category. I’ve just never understood the point of being a member of a church that I didn’t believe in fully (that may be why I’m agnostic).
Mortal sins can be forgiven, but in all cases, your desire for forgiveness has to be sincere (not that the Church can judge such things, but God can, at least if you believe). Saying the Our Fathers and such just because the Priest told you is as empty as saying “I’m a naughty boy” during extramarital sex.
In any event, the person in question wants approval not only for abortion, but also for stealing. Two down, eight to go.
Just a quibble, at the Vatican the Church can indeed wield power like a government. Everywhere else on the planet….
The Pope? How many divisions has he got?
0. But as our topless heroine discovered, there are plenty of guards and police to guard an area the size of two city blocks.
Grab ’em by the Light of the World!
Humungus- crawl in through the back and start it (it starts, right?) and run the heater for a while. Maybe that will thaw it out.

Disney unleashed the Dark Side of the Force on Mark Hamill
Screw Disney. Honestly, at this point, even if I didn’t support it on principled grounds, I would welcome it just to screw with the rat.
Do they think for a minute that shutting Hamill up is going to do a damned thing for the crashing box office their PC shitshow of a movie is generating? People were responding to Hamill because he was voicing what they were already thinking.
Saw it last night with the wife and kid. What a mess.
It was better than the last one, which makes it just “sucks balls” instead of “sucks donkey balls”.
By last one do you mean Force Awakens, or Rogue One?
I never saw Rouge Uno
The last 1/3 of Rogue One was decent, it just took a while to get there.
Just watched it on Netflix. Still havent seen Force Awakens or the new one.
That is a big problem. The Last Jedi is like two and half hours and feels like 4.
Still havent seen Force Awakens or the new one.
Don’t bother with Force Awakens. Just watch A New Hope again and imagine what the movie would be like if they took out all the parts that made that made that movie iconic.
It was a steaming turd, but it did have some unintentionally funny moments. The scene with a purple haired Laura Dern performing a kamikaze run against the Imperial dreadnought was meant to convey a sense of valiant self sacrifice, but it said to me that you should never give control of heavy machinery to a gender studies major. Also, Kylo’s attempt to get just the tip of his throbbing pulse cannon into Leia’s fortified cavern might have had some faint shades of Oedipal angst. I might be reading way too much into it though.
It’s one thing when your friend or coworker tells you it was a shit movie. You might still say “Hey, maybe it’s not that great, but it’s Star Wars. You gotta see it.” It’s another when one of the biggest names associated with the Star Wars brand tells you there’s something rotten in Denmark.
Mark Hamlet?
*narrows gaze*
Here’s the thing, though, Hamill wasn’t telling anyone anything that those friends and coworkers weren’t already telling them. And as I noted, the box office for Last Jedi was already in freefall before Hamill even said a word.
It’s still sold out in most theaters in my area. Most of my friends have seen it multiple times and I will as well. There are terrible things in this movie, but I actually like that it kind of screws with the mythology of Star Wars a little bit. Poking a stick in the eye of the giant douche that is George Lucas brings a smile to my face.
I haven’t bothered to go see it. I’m getting really tired of all these iterative movies. I view new Star Wars movies the same way I view new super hero movies. Boring.
As far as sequels go, I highly recommend Ash vs Evil Dead on Netflix/Starz. I haven’t laughed that much in a while.
I’m a bit nervous for the third season coming out, as they switched show runners. But, everything so far has been gold.
The morgue scene is forever etched into my brain.
That was the first thing that popped into my head.
I’ll have to check it out. I liked the original but its been a long time since I’ve seen it. I thought maybe I liked it because I was young.
That’s where I am, too. Watched Merchant of Venice and Othello the last two nights. Great stuff.
Racist!
I might watch it when it shows up on Netflix of HBO. Maybe, if I have nothing else to do.
I did watch the Ranger Up spoiler review. Evaporating Luke Skywalker who didn’t do shit the whole movie – Mark Hamill should be complaining.
It sounds like the screenplay was written by some random scene-generating AI, not a human trying to tell a story.
Apparently, a Disney feature.
Pretty funny. I thought I just wasn’t paying attention when I watched a couple of minutes of that thing. Kind of a relief it wasn’t supposed to make sense.
Ain’t happening.
Nah, I don’t see it.
Centuries of inbreeding don’t go to well with jobs.
Well, the annoying cough yesterday developed into gifts from Grandfather Nurgle. I think it’s just a cold, but my coworkers don’t appreciate contagious people turning up.
Apparently a bug got into my dogs. They are taking turns shitting and puking all over the house. This is the second time this year they have contracted some kind of dog stomach bug. In the interim the wife and I took turns with one.

SP make a practice of removing power from our Amazon Fire when not in use for just that reason.
I’m not sure it makes a difference, but I expended a little extra effort and got a dumb teevee last fall when I replaced mine.
*they’re harder to find than you might think.
Yes, we have a dumb TV that is about 10 years old now. Sadly, we are down to one working HDMI port. I fear the TV replacement search.
You could just not connect the new TV to the internet. Use a Roku, Apple TV, or Fire Stick for streaming. I don’t think they even create non-smart TVs anymore.
Long term, the only solution is to get in under the hood and snip the mic wires or punch out the diaphragm.
That’s exactly it. I am an expert at desoldering.
DESOLDIERING?!!
…
Oh, desoldering.
Carry on.
And for those who can’t do that, a white noise generator is cheap – and legal – at the moment.
I am paranoid – or cynical – enough to assume that’s the only way to stop it from broadcasting.
In theory, a cunning manufacturer could install piezo-crystal pickups on the boards too, that wouldn’t be so obvious to neutralize, but realistically, an inspection for a mic+amp circuit should be safe enough. Who needs a microphone on their TV anyway?
When it comes to other devices, I disconnect mics and cameras when I’m not using them. Not’s not that much of an effort, and IoT devices are pretty much verboten in the house. The kids all have RJ45’s in the walls of the rooms they use and we all go wired whenever it makes sense – performance is far better. We all have VPN software on the phones and if we want messaging, we have access to Signal and Threema. We’re not criminals, but we’re happy for the Panopticon State to waste time and resources trying to decode our household irrelevancies if they wish to.
It’ll be hard to determine if you’re being bugged even if you watched the data coming out of the TV via a network sniffer, but I do spot-check the routing tables on the gateway when I get particularly paranoid.
I’m not sure what bothers me more, that all they sell are smart TVs now, or that the manufacturers stop releasing updates for the TVs (if they ever do at all) well before the end of their operational lifespan. Or maybe it’s that there’s no way to completely remove the “smart TV” features (although, you can usually just disconnect it from the network).
So I read the other day that Elon, in an apparent bid to become the shystiest shyster of all time, promised to build an electric pickup truck. Right after they finish the Model Y, whatever the fuck that is. Anywho, I fired up the Google machine and found this bit of vaporware.
In fairness, it appears that the company actually builds things, so maybe it will happen, but my question is why. Looking at the specs, the range is 75 miles. Unless you use the ‘Range Extender’ (known around these parts as an ‘engine’). Payload and towing capacity are meh.
So, would any of you buy such a thing?
When the range is equal or greater than my 2007 jeep, when the cost per mile is equal or better, when recharging is as accessible as gasoline is now, we’ll talk.
Of course those coming true are just as likely as me flying to the moon.
If it cost about $10k, and I didn’t have the funds for a real pickup.
I’ll stick with my range-extender-powered pickup.
Although, I will say if those specs are legit, I could see it being used as a fleet truck (which it seems is their target market).
I’m driving my Tacoma til it’s dead or I’m dead, whichever comes first.
Probably you.
I buy a lot of pickup trucks.
The answer is absolutely not.
If it’s this Model Y, I’m in.
Happy moment on Squawk this morning was Melissa Lee mocking Elon Musk about promising to deliver trucks he can’t build.
Sad moment on Squawk was MADD ringing the opening bell.
So, would any of you buy such a thing?
No, it looks like a Honda Ridgeline. If I want a truck, I’ll get a truck.
We’re all weary.
Not “wooly”?
Which reminds me- Bull Durham, the only “baseball movie” I ever really oliked.
Excellent movie, but Major League is terrific as well.
Major League is far better than Bull Durham, and I love both.
Bob Ueker alone confirms this.
I would argue that Major League or Moneyball are the best sports movies of all time. Come at me bro.
Do you even Caddyshack, bro?
Um, Slap Shot ring any bells?
No love for Goon?
Also, Pride of the Yankees should not be overlooked.
(even though I hate the Yankees with a fire that burns hot enough to melt steel)
Voros wasn’t in the movie version of Moneyball, so I can’t support it.
Plus, they cut the funnest scene from the book, which is them going thru pre-draft prospects dissecting their mental issues.
Speaking of which, did he ever make it over here? He was sporadic on TOS, but I don’t think I have seen him here.
I don’t think so…He would be most welcome.

I would have guessed Bad New Bears. Or was Tatum O’Neal too old for you?
I killed millions of potential Jews watching that movie.
I remember as a ten year old thinking “That movie was great except for the PC bullshit of putting a girl in it.”
Yes, I know “PC” wasn’t the phrase at the time but I still felt that putting a girl in that role softened an otherwise great non-PC movie.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie, but wasn’t hers kind of a big part? It wasn’t just tacked on, IIRC.
I was TEN! I didn’t give a shit about Buttermaker getting any sort of redemption.
An electric pickup truck- what happens when you back it down the boat ramp?
Hopefully, it explodes.
Electric cars are made on aluminum frames, aren’t they? The rear end of a pickup is already a bit light. Making it lighter would make it useless as a work vehicle. No traction.
The batteries could help in that regard, I guess.
Yes. Putting the battery atop the drive wheels or making it 4wd could fix that. Call me cynical but I suspect neither the people designing these things nor the people buying them care about that. I dont see them out in the pasture trying to yank a stump out of the ground.
The only thing most of these people have in common with pastures is bullshit.
Yeah, these aren’t being designed by “truck people” in any realistic sense.
Irish coffee. Bourbon, eggnog, and Santa Clara coffee. Yummy.
I hope those are different things… eggnog does not belong in anything being called Irish coffee.
It’s great in coffee. Ok, not Irish coffee, Hyperion coffee! Now with more eggnog!
“When Meredith Heller adopted Bodie, a young Beagle mix, she knew shelter dogs often have trouble settling in. But she wasn’t worried. Among the benefits offered by her Manhattan employer, customer data platform provider mParticle: two weeks paid “pawternity leave” for workers adopting a rescue dog.
Ms. Heller and Bodie, who turned out to be perfectly well behaved, spent their time off hanging at the dog run and meeting other canines in their Brooklyn neighborhood.
“It was nice to have that option to really get to know him,” she says.
As Americans increasingly treat their pets like furry children, employers are responding by extending family benefits to pets. The trend is especially strong in New York City, where the closest many come to having a child is buying a schnauzer.
“We offer maternity and paternity leave, and a pet is another member of the family. We don’t discriminate just because they aren’t human,” says Laurel Peppino, head of talent acquisition at mParticle.
Ms. Peppino says the company’s paid-leave policy also applies to exotic pets such as iguanas.
Nationwide, just 11% of workers report their employers allow pets in the workplace, according to the American Pet Products Association. But in New York’s creative and startup scene, you’re nothing without a pack of hounds snoozing in the conference room and an Instagram account flaunting the office dogs.
At Brooklyn-based marketing and strategy agency Huge, you’ll typically find 20 pups snoozing under desks and squeaky toys cluttering the aisles.”

Welcome to Commietopia!
it is a stark glimpse into the day-to-day existence of some of the country’s poorest citizens – including women and children.
At least save the women and children.
Oh for God’s sake! Why the hell are we supposed to feel more sympathy for women being poor than men? Is it not equally sad either way? Why does having a vagina suddenly generate more sympathy for you than for a man in an equally shitty situation?
The men brought it upon themselves. The women and children are victims of the men. Don’t you patriarchy?
A surprising number of people on the left and on the right will tell you precisely that in no uncertain terms. They view men as expendable and make no bones about it.
If this were a pervasive problem we would see it everywhere. California driving out industry and middle and upper class people plus offering incentives for the homeless is what created that place. Isnt this a case of “It hurts when I do this! Feel sorry for me!”
You will see a few homeless people in Baltimore on a daily basis at certain intersections. But nothing like that. Most of the homeless here are mentally ill or are on drugs and too socially unpredictable to stay in shelters or have anyone try to care for them.
Democrats have a super majority in the state house, they are sooo fucking caring about the poor. /sarcasm

Yeah, but are you a fascist?
Yep. There’s no other reason to support freedom of speech, other than to support fascists. Also, you should have no objection to a police search if you’ve got nothing to hide.
… Papiere, bitte!
I said it in yesterday’s thread after it was dead:
Free speech is to protect nazis, dumbass.
Not all of them, but most of them see the left as the real enemy, and are reluctant to really spend their time repudiating fascism because they think left folks are the real threat.
Fair nuff.
I had to read that 5 times to make sense of the grammar, or lack thereof.

As far as I know fascists are about as far left as one can get.

Let us recap:

So these people who think government should control businesses are AGAINST fascists?

“This Woman Is Drawing Clitorises On The Ground All Over The World
“Be curious about the clitoris.”
Her very first drawing took place last October, in NYC’s Washington Square Park. (Kingsley also dressed up as a clitoris for Halloween that year!) It was simple and straightforward. Kingsley, along with the help of some supportive friends, drew the vibrant illustration on the ground, captioned it “Be curious about the clitoris,” and waited for reactions.
Related: 5 Moves That Are Great for Masturbation
“A lot of people came up and asked me questions, which was really exciting, because I had no idea how people would respond,” she says. “People were curious, people were talking to us about it, and many were shocked they had no idea about this part of their body.”
According to Kingsley, “How am I this old and I didn’t know this was in my body?” is actually one of the most common reactions she gets, closely followed by “It looks like an octopus.”
But very few people actually know what it is right away, says Kingsley. “I didn’t have anyone guess what I was drawing right away until my 20th drawing.” That happened while she was in New Orleans, and a man who was on a run took one look at the image and stated: “It’s a clitoris.” When she said he was the first person to identify it so quickly, he shrugged and replied: “I went to med school.””
https://www.womenshealthmag.com/sex-and-love/clitorosity
I am calling bullshit.
Kingsley, along with the help of some supportive friends, drew the vibrant illustration on the ground, captioned it “Be curious about the clitoris,” and waited for reactions.
And yet these same people will tell you with a straight face that they don’t understand why women aren’t taken more seriously.
Proposition:
She doesn’t have any friends that are curious about getting to know her clitoris.
Her parents must be so proud.
But a guy who draws dicks on everything gets nothing.

Sure there is. Netflix did a whole series about it.
(And it’s worth watching, it’s really funny.)
I really loved that show.
“Kilroy was here.”
The left have been out of ideas for about 100 years now. None of them worked, this is where that ends up.
Right? Georgia O’Keefe was at least subtle about it and made you use your imagination amidst all the pretty flowers.
Heh. I was at the Metropolitan yesterday in the O’Keefe section, and there was some old guy trying to not explain what any guy can see when they look at this picture, to a young woman who I can only presume was his granddaughter.
Meh. The essential ideological elements of laissez-faire capitalism (Smith, Bastiat) and liberal republicanism (Locke, Madison) were all laid out centuries ago. You could just as well say we’ve been “out of (new) ideas” for over 100 years now. So what? Those old ideas are good.
The entire point of critiquing progressivism as old is that they always try to position themselves as the new trend, as progress from the past. Conservatives/libertarians/classical liberals don’t do that. Thus the attack doesn’t cut like it does against the ideology of “social progress”
Yeah, but are you a fascist?
We’re all fascists , now.
“Nearly 450,000 People Fled These Three Deep Blue States In 2017
Three Democratic-leaning states hemorrhaged hundreds of thousands of people in 2016 and 2017 as crime, high taxes and, in some cases, crummy weather had residents seeking greener pastures elsewhere.
The exodus of residents was most pronounced in New York, which saw about 190,000 people leave the state between July 1, 2016 and July 1, 2017, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released last week.”
http://dailycaller.com/2017/12/26/nearly-450000-people-fled-these-three-deep-blue-states-in-2017/
Surely we can have some common sense border control, right?
I wonder how bigger that number will get once you can no longer deduct your state taxes from your federal taxes.
The issue’s not a trivial one. I’m hoping it causes a few years’ re-alignment of residency. I already know that there are people in Westchester Co. (NY) who like the lifestyle and tolerate the (crippling) property taxes who are looking longingly at Fairfield Co. (CT) next door despite its own (almost crippling) property taxes and (currently) slightly lower property prices.
Layer on what the states themselves do in response to tax reform, and I’m hoping we get property back to near-2007 prices up here (if temporarily) so we can sell off and move somewhere else.
My wife and I were looking for houses in one of the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago and we saw one that suited what we needed. The price was great, the schools were great but the only thing that made us decide to not jump on the house was the $12,000 a year in property taxes because fuck that shit. They lowered the offering price but people still weren’t biting because of the high property taxes. The owners ended up taking the house off the market.
Same deal with wife and I here in Balmer. We found a home that we thought was an ok price, for here, and then found out about the 10k annual property tax. I pay about $900 a year on my home in the midwest with 6 acres.
Well Ed, you somewhat ironically ran into the “white flight” protection scheme the state allowed for Cook County. All counties in the state tax residential and commercial property at the same rate, but the state allowed Cook County to change the proportion such that Cook commercial property is taxed at 3x the residential rate. (Let’s say the state taxes property at 3%, but Cook can tax residential at 1.5% and commercial at 4.5%. 3+3 = 1.5 + 4.5). So the only reason $12k sounds high is because you are used to the $6k Cook exception. But you end up traveling further for your job so you pay anyway – but the property taxes are deductible whereas the transportation costs are not. (And the property taxes will still be deductible from state income taxes.)
Of course, it just forced businesses to flee instead of residents, but businesses don’t count in the census. And of course the places in Cook County that suffered the worst job losses are the poorest areas of the county. I’m sure most of the other large cities in the “union belt” did similar things.
But the main thing is Cook County gets to keep you. Mike Madigan would be more upset if you moved to McHenry County than if you moved out of state.
I’m fairly certain that will be a significant factor in the new future.
Would you like some popcorn?
It’d be interesting to see what the breakdown was for NYC vs Upstate NY. Migration out of NYC is like a suppurating sore, infecting the rest of the country with all the kinds of people who are going to fuck up their new home states – the only good thing (and I’m saying this as a current Nutmegger) is that many of them will be young city dwellers with awful personal politics will be wanting to get out into NJ and CT, which are already basket cases.
Is there an area in the US other than San Diego that DOESN’T have crummy weather two or three months a year?
The worst part is ALL of these people are now in AZ complaining about the bagels.
SIL was saying some of her NY colleagues were mad about the tax reform because their taxes were going to go up. I told her their taxes probably weren’t, unless her colleagues were making a whole lot more than they likely are, but if they are upset that they have to pay high state and local taxes without getting a federal deduction, maybe the problem really is Eric state and local taxes are too high?
As to whether taxes should be deductible, as far as I know, federal taxes aren’t deductible on your state tax return. Why push for deductibility at the federal level and not the state level?
“Tax the rich – except for me because despite the income I make because I don’t feel rich because I care about poor people.”
Kinda like my sister complaining about the “obesity epidemic”. Once I said “Start fixing it by working on yourself” she wouldn’t speak to me for two years. (She did lose about 30 pounds – and now never seems to have a word to say about the obesity epidemic or any other “societal” problems.)

“How Trump and the Nazis Stole Christmas To Promote White Nationalism
“I see such invocations of Christmas as a kind of cypher, what some would call a dog whistle. It does not appear to be intolerant or extreme, but to attentive audiences it speaks volumes about identity and belonging—who and what are fully American,” Richard King, a professor at Washington State University who studies how white supremacists exploit culture, told Newsweek.
“Much like ‘Make America Great Again,’ panics over the protests by NFL players, and the defense of Confederate memory, Christmas is a way to talk about peril, to assert a soft or hard version of white nationalism.””

Got the teevee on in the background; they’re talking about the tax changes, and what businesses will do. Not a fucking word about cutting prices. It’s all about share buybacks and dividend bumps and (further) lining the pockets of the evil rich.
Lord knows only the wealthy own stocks or invest in market funds or have retirement accounts.
A lot of people on the Left really do believe that there is a cabal of white men in top hats in a boardroom planning the systematic destruction and exploitation of the poor. It’s unbelievable how many people don’t know that the Average Joe in some way whether directly or indirectly invests in the stock market.
Hell, just look at how many people don’t know what a mutual fund is.
That’s nuts! We all know proper etiquette is to take our top hats off when entering the Board Room.
what about swimming in gold coins in the secret vault? do they cover that?
My favorite is “They will use it for share buybacks instead of new investment!!!!”
Ummm, what do you think the people who sell the shares back are going to do with their money?
Sure, there will be some spending, but if these people wanted spending cash, they would be selling anyway. What they will be doing is investing it in other companies.
Share buybacks are done by companies who don’t have a higher value use for the money. The people who sell off are the people who want to shift their money to have a higher value use, so will be investing in companies that want reinvestment.
Exactly
Share buybacks also benefit the 401K and pensions of us worker-bee types.
Meh. I have some respect for the argument that allowing companies to buy back shares is almost never in the interest of the minority share holders, but that’s a holdover from when companies paid dividends.
I would prefer the old system where dividends were used instead of buybacks and capital gains, but I am not sure how buybacks hurt minority share holders, as it concentrates their ownership if they dont sell.
I like to counter the dumb complaints about share buybacks with a “play dumb” comment like “Yeah! Why don’t they just issue more stock if they want more money?!” It’s fun seeing the people that agree and the people that don’t actually understand what equity is.
Paying down liabilities is a foreign concept to the typical 21st century American.

“Your beliefs threaten to alienate your son from his country and afflict him with a sense of moral inefficacy and impotence. This could squash his chance of being an engine of change in the course of history. You tell him simply: “The entire narrative of this country argues against the truth of who you are.” But this is the United States of America—a country born with a terrible birth defect, slavery, but still a work in progress. It is a country that says to me; to Vanessa, a woman too black to feel at home in her own predominantly black country; to Thai; to Dinesh, whom no one would dare touch in his homeland: I am an open canvas. Write your script on me. Without you and your story and your narrative, the story of America is incomplete.”
It’s super long but a really great read. And of course I am biased because he teaches at my alma mater.
Another great quote: “This abnegation of personal responsibility assumes its logical end in your failure to grant black people responsibility for their own lives in the phenomenon of black-on-black crime. You tell your son: “Black-on-black crime is jargon, violence to language . . . . To yell black-on-black crime is to shoot a man and then shame him for bleeding.” Why? You give no reasons. In truth, black-on-black crime is a pathology that has to be reckoned with.”
Personally, I’ve always thought of Coates as a fucking huckster who thrives on black victim-hood and white guilt.
Conyers, Jackson et al are all getting on in years and goshdammit someone has to step into their race-baitin’ shoes.
Ta-Nehisi Coates is a tired negro sitting on the dilapidated porch of postmodernism, asking passers-by for change.
I’m going to buy one of Jason Hill’s books and give it a read. Article is amazing. Really demonstrates something that I always thought was true. People will idolize someone who gives them an excuse to fail at life.
Good read – thanks for the link!
That was an absolutely brilliant essay. Thanks for sharing it.
Ta-Nahesi Coates is a fire and brimstone preacher, telling his adoring flock of crackers that they’re sinners and the world is terrible because of the original sin that they carry. His bullshit makes considerably more sense once you realize this.

Wow. What an asshole.
I genuinely agree with Carl Benjamin on this one. Cenk has nothing to apologize for beyond what he said in his announcement. He should stand proud and admit that he was a dick when he was younger, and that he understands why people think it was crass and boorish 20 years ago.
Now all he has to do is explain his crass and boorish behavior in the present day, because that’s what really matters.

I know some libertarians who are weird. I know some who are ugly. I know some who ‘chase women’ and are pretty assertive when they do.
But I don’t know any that are creepy. And that’s the sin. That, and there aren’t many of us.
It’s bound to happen eventually though.
Of course it will. It is worth noting that most people who call themselves libertarian are anything but. It will be a Bill Maher type. No doubt in my mind it will be one of them which will provide a perfect pretense for painting the rest of use with a broad brush.
At the risk of making a No True Scotsman argument, people who believe in self ownership for everyone don’t trespass.
I should add this too:
Q – “Why haven’t you been accused yet?”
A – “I dont have any money.”
It will start as soon as they figure out which ones of us have swimming pools filled with gold.
Who was trying to puzzle out why no Libertarian types have been caught up in this #MeToo stuff?
My first guess is that people who believe in individual liberty and self-ownership are going to be a little less inclined to try to impose their will on others.
Either that or the fact that there aren’t any libertarian women for them to do it to,.
How many libertarians are there who are big enough names for anyone to notice or care if they were accused of sexual harrassment? Hell how many are big enough names to have gotten away with sexually harrassing someone?
MAtt
Nick
Boaz
Stossell
Napolitanio
Jillette
Carey
Of those the Judge is the only one I can see ever having had the power to really think he could get away with really bad behavior and I can’t really think of any other big names. Vince Vaughn maybe? He’s sorta libertarianish. Perter Thiel or John Mackey?
At the end of the day we may never see a libertarian accused of sexual impropriety because there just aren’t enough of us who have ever had real power to even try anything.
Yeah, I’ve seen this several times. I’m just waiting to find out what kind of crazy shit this guy has been up to in his spare time. (TW: HuffPo)

Heard on the radio just now: two women discussing how to handle workplace romances in light of ABC’s policy. One suggests announcing it to HR as a prophylactic against later accusations of misconduct. The other says it’s creepy, that the man should hold on to any messages in case he’s accused later.
But really, is it less creepy having to document your liasons in case she later decides you’re a sex pest? Are texts and emails, even voicemails dispositive against a sufficiently motivated accuser? Especially when she can claim she was pressured into the relationship and feared losing her job. And finally, the second woman assumes HR is going to be any more sympathetic to the accused than are college administrators.
I think getting your colleague-partner on record with the company is probably the way to go, at least until the hysteria blows over.
Anyone stupid enough to fish in the company pond deserves what they get.
For some people, it’s a real challenge avoiding the company pond.
This doesn’t have anything to do with office romance, but I actually do lock and save text conversations I have with sexual partners. These days, as a guy, you can never be too careful. I assume it will at least help to have evidence that they wanted to be around me and that after they left they said that they “had a great time :)” etc.
You just never know if one will go crazy and try to screw you over 20 years later.
You should film them all, you know, for evidence.
I once dated a girl that actually testified in court against a dude that had secretly filmed them having sex. It was illegal in Maryland and they put the dude in jail.
California
Connecticut
Florida
Hawaii
Illinois
Maryland
Massachusetts
Montana
Nevada
New Hampshire
Pennsylvania
Washington
The rest are 1 party states for phone calls and conversations. I guess sex would fall under the latter.
Its a dick think to do to film someone having sex without their knowledge of being filmed. Its one thing if they’re in public with no expectation of privacy, but its another thing when you’re behind closed doors. I have 0 sympathy for the guy.
What if is was in case of a false accusation?
Well, with false acusations the real damage happens to people’s reputations/careers, so I’m assuming you’re not talking about a criminal court case brought against the guy for an accusation of rape. I’m assuming that instead you mean something similar to the #MeToo stuff that’s going on now — court of Twitter’s opinion type accusation. An attack on your reputation/career instead of actually trying to get you slapped with a criminal conviction.
If that’s the case, I really don’t see how a film of you and the accuser having sex would help. What would you do with it? Post it? Then its revenge porn. Not to mention at that point you’re admitting that you secretly film yourself having sex with other people. You would be destroying your own reputation at that point.
If you’re talking about criminal charges, etc., sure, a film could be useful for getting your name cleared on a rape charge. But so could texts, calls, etc. The standard of proof is much higher than it is in the court of public opinion. I simply don’t see how having a secret film would help in the court of public opinion.
It’s not an invasion of privacy unless he shows it to someone else. I do have some sympathy if he kept it private and only used it for his criminal defense. Convicting him under those facts would raise some serious due process concerns.
It was video of the sex that cleared the accused in Hofstra case.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofstra_University_rape_case
And there are numerous other examples….
You might as well tell them you are filming and why you are filming, RC Dean.
The other person ought to have a say, then they have the choice as to whether to trust you to hold onto the film and not distribute it or sell it.
Potato – I never said it wouldn’t help in a court case – in fact I said the opposite.
You might as well tell them you are filming and why you are filming, RC Dean.
I question how much this can be broadened out as a principle. If I put up security cameras around my house and it catches you swiping a family heirloom, are you due a disclaimer upon walking into my house that you are being video recorded?
If I put up security cameras around my house and it catches you swiping a family heirloom, are you due a disclaimer upon walking into my house that you are being video recorded?
Is there a difference between filming the outside of your house and what is underneath the clothes of a guest in your house?
I think you should be able to film the inside of your house all you want, but it becomes more complicated when you also want to film what is underneath someone else’s clothes, even if they’re in your house. Concept of self-ownership in a place that provides a reasonable expectation of privacy.
Should you be able to place a camera in every toilet/showever in your home, filming every guest that comes over, simply because its your house? What if the guest happens to be a child?
*shower
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have a security camera in some of the living and sleeping rooms of your home. If – as a practical matter – an X.10 security system were to – capture some footage of a rooms inhabitants – interacting, it would be entirely consistent with the system’s functionality and purpose.
I think you should be able to film the inside of your house all you want, but it becomes more complicated when you also want to film what is underneath someone else’s clothes, even if they’re in your house.
This is exactly the point I’m getting at. If I have a security camera set up in my living room and it happens to catch a sexual romp on it, that feels somewhat different than hiding a GoPro on my bookshelf and intentionally filming my latest sexual conquest. I’m having a hard time fleshing out (in my own mind) what the difference is, besides intention. If we’re gonna disapprove of people based on intention, that’s getting really close to punishing thoughtcrime.
Thus, I’m trying to figure out if there’s something else categorically different about filming in the living room versus filming in the bedroom.
I don’t think its unreasonable to have security cams in living and bedrooms either, but when you invite someone into that room to get them to take off their clothes, I think they deserve at least some kind of say in the matter. At least to say “please turn the video recording off.”
I don’t have a problem with secret audio recording, just the secret video recording that I find somewhat dubious. Mainly because of the reputational damage you can actually do to the other person simply by distributing such things online. Hell, there are sites that will pay you for revenge porn.
If you make it a priority to capture footage at ingress points (and you should – having footage of a burglar breaking a window to get in is powerful evidence that ensures that you weren’t negligent – bedrooms make a lot of sense. Long shots down hallways etc.
If I were a player and wanted to protect myself, I’d make sure I had footage of being us playful in the hallway before we got to the bedroom. I’d want to capture the spirit and behavior of a girl with me before, and as we entered the bedroom. I wouldn’t even need footage of the bed itself. Premeditated? No your honor, I’m just grateful I invested in some technology that keeps my person and my invited guests safe.
If we’re gonna disapprove of people based on intention, that’s getting really close to punishing thoughtcrime.
I don’t know about whether or not “disproving” modifies my thought here- but I think intention already plays a place in even the most deeply engrained criminal law: i.e. differences between 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree murder. Punishments can be changed based on intention as far as I can tell, and I think it actually does make sense to do it that way. I’m not sure if this changes or is dubious when applied to whether or not something is a crime, though. Maybe you can tell me what you think.
For the record, the guy that was convicted by that girl I dated awhile ago – he was the go-pro hiding type. He had multiple cameras in the room hidden in different objects to get various angles. He was also distributing. It was a whole operation.
This makes met think – should the distribution, not the filming itself, be the crime? I really don’t know.
Mainly because of the reputational damage you can actually do to the other person simply by distributing such things online.
I think this is where the difference may lie. Distribution of the video seems to cross a line. If Pervy McPerv wants to keep videos of his conquests for future
self-pleasureuse, that may be seen as disgusting by the partners involved, but doesn’t seem like it should be legally actionable to me. On the other hand, I don’t think that Pervy retains all rights to that video. Some vest in the partner. Just like you can’t sell a communally owned house without the assent of all owners, you can’t publish a video without the assent of all participants. The privacy violation isn’t taping sex. It’s showing it to anyone who wasn’t there. That said, it’s kinda dickish,, sure, but merely taping without more shouldn’t be illegal.

I think we may have just reached the same conclusion at the same time. See my previous post.
Consensus! That means it’s science, right?

You’re right. Current criminal law does largely focus on the intent of the actor. I’m not sure I’m completely on board with that, though. I see a difference between parsing the amount of purpose in the action versus determining “why” the supposed criminal did what they did.
For example, if somebody killed my brother, I don’t think that their conviction and punishment should be keyed to their rationale. As long as they did it on purpose, and didn’t do it in some rights-affirming context (self-defense, etc.), then they should be convicted and punished for murder. I wholly reject concepts like “hate crimes”, “crimes of passion”, and “felony murder.” On the other hand, I think there’s a difference between doing something on purpose, doing something recklessly, and doing something negligently.
Consensus! That means it’s science, right?
97% of Glibs agree!!
I think there’s a difference between doing something on purpose, doing something recklessly, and doing something negligently.
I also don’t agree with “hate crimes”, but I think I understand the idea of “crimes of passion.”
Is a “crime of passion” also considered “reckless?” This is how I think about it but I’m not sure if I’m really correct since I’m not a lawyer.
I think it makes a difference if someone was in a fit of rage when they found out that their spouse was cheating on them, so they killed them vs. someone finding out that a spouse has cheated on them so they slowly and methodically plan out a brutal way to murder them over several months/years etc.
I feel like the planning/going through with it shows the intentions of the person were fully thought out, rationalized and acted upon. A murder during a crime of passion, although just as bad in result (someone dies), doesn’t as clearly show that the person would have done exactly the same thing (kill someone) if given some time to back off and think about it. Isn’t the difference in punishment supposed to show that society considers the methodical planner/rationalizer of murder to be more dangerous to society than the person that had flung themselves into a momentary murderous rage?
Is a “crime of passion” also considered “reckless?” This is how I think about it but I’m not sure if I’m really correct since I’m not a lawyer.
Crime of passion is “I caught you in bed with my wife so I killed you both with my Bowie knife”
Reckless is “I was fucking around by driving 10 over on the wrong side of the road and killed a family”
Crime of passion just reduces the charge from premeditated murder to a lesser murder charge. Reckless murder is usually its own class of charge.
Isn’t the difference in punishment supposed to show that society considers the methodical planner/rationalizer of murder to be more dangerous to society than the person that had flung themselves into a momentary murderous rage?
I think you’re right, but I also think that’s a bit of an arbitrary distinction. Which is worse, somebody who gets out of a bad situation by planning to kill somebody else or somebody who gets out of a bad situation by flying off the handle and killing somebody else?
Personally, I don’t think the loved ones are really going to care, and I’m not sure I buy the idea that there is some sense of discipline built into the justice system. I see justice as serving two goals, isolating wrongdoers from society at large and enacting retribution for the loved ones.
So what you’re saying is a Smart Speaker is technically illegal in the aforementioned states.

I think that I’d rather have some exculpatory evidence to avoid a rape prosecution, if I needed it.
Seems pretty unlikely that they’d be able to prove a false rape accusation beyond a reasonable doubt. False accusations seem to stay in the realm of college tribunals and the twitter thought police.
People that make false rape accusations rarely run to the real police. Even the ones that do have a hard time actually proving it was rape.
My son’s coming up to college age. I’ve told him if he ends up in one of these tribunals to take the fifth. Record everything, take notes, and then call me, because when everything’s over, he’ll be in a different college under any circumstances – win or lose.
Until quite recently, I was chary of lawyering up. After this car fiasco, I’ve decided I rather enjoy the cut and thrust of vigorous lawyerly combat and would relish the challenge.
Good advice. I’m happy I got out of college right before this stuff started to get really bad (well, right at the beginning of it anyway).
What car fiasco?
Oh, I had to threaten to take a used car place to court. Very routine, I just had to demonstrate a commitment to take them to the cleaners if they didn’t comply, and then retain Law Godzilla to intermediate.
Just to round out my point on if my son was ever accused, I’d ensure the claim was elevated to a claim of sexual assault or worse, with the local politzei. The way it’s looking now, an accusation of rape under the existing legal system is refutable, and recorded.
A kangaroo court trial has no positive outcome for the rest of the ‘defendant’s life. It’s a rope to hang him until the day he dies.
My son knows this is what I’ll do, all the time he’s at college, so he’d better make sure he isn’t guilty of a real crime, because he would be putting himself at real risk by behaving that way.
I don’t even know what Law Godzilla is, but sounds like you have a plan, which is better than probably every single other person at your son’s school.
Oh, “Law Godzilla” was the attorney I retained. Absolute rottweiler. He was great.
Hey, don’t you know, there are no perfect victims. Her acting like she was head over heels in love with you for 3 years after you raped her is a perfectly normal response and method of coping with the trauma you inflicted on her.
My favorite is “They will use it for share buybacks instead of new investment!!!!”
Better buybacks than pissing the money away on acquisitions which serve little purpose other than to boost the vanity of management.
“A Jimmy Choo advert featuring Cara Delevingne being whistled at on the streets of New York has been labelled “sexist” in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

I’d give her a hot dog, if you know what I mean.
Don’t forget the shake to go with it.
I know what you mean.
i would think she is not be-boobed enough for you lot
Hey, I’m with you. I am more of a peach guy than a melon guy.
More than a handful is a waste.
The problem isn’t the lack of boobs, she’s just a shameless self-publicist (no surprise, given her profession)
The only appropriate comment is “let the market decide.” Which would send progs into a tizzy.
No one understands the sublime anymore. She’s getting attention because of the shoes — actually, the shoes are getting the attention. And one of those giving attention is another woman.
And it has the twist at the end that she’s just getting a hot dog from a street vendor, which is kind of nice. (Which she doesn’t pay for.)
Parts of me lack any appreciation of the sublime.

American democracy
which was in such great shape before Trump came onto the scene. Why, look at our House of Representatives, where we’ve had the same number of members since 1910 even though the country has grown more than threefold since then. And my, what oddly shaped districts these Congressmen have!
But no, the big bad wolf came along and blew the sturdy, well built house down.
+435
Don’t you realize, with more congressmen, the business of running the country would be far more difficult?
We could expand to up to about 10,290 representatives (based on 2010 census)!
Kentucky could have up to 144 reps, instead of 6.
Sounds like honest-to-goodness representation rather than the fake representation we have today. The colonists rioted over better representation than what we have now..
Can you imagine that many reps? It would be awesome! No desks, no chairs, everyone would have to stand, the sheer discomfort would limit bills to two pages, and deal-making would be almost impossible.
Your optimism confuses me.
“Three intruders had military-style weapons when they tried to break into the North Carolina home of NASCAR team owner and 2017 Hall of Fame inductee Richard Childress late Sunday, authorities said Friday.
Childress, 72, said he was upstairs with his wife at about 10:30 p.m. when he heard glass shatter downstairs. He grabbed his handgun, went downstairs and fired multiple shots at the home invaders, scaring them off, according to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.
Childress told the sheriff “the only reason he and his wife were here today was because of God and the Second Amendment,” Winston-Salem NBC affiliate WXII 12 reported. Childress is a second vice president of the National Rifle Association.”

I would prefer the old system where dividends were used instead of buybacks and capital gains, but I am not sure how buybacks hurt minority share holders, as it concentrates their ownership if they dont sell.
There is, to be sure, a broad spectrum of corporate philosophy, but I definitely like the old fashioned model of buying into the corporate steam of income.
I think we should end the corporate income tax but then require a minimum dividend percentage (something like 35% of profit or 10% of retained earnings, whichever is lower) in the next year.
If the company wants to retain more than that, they can issue more shares.
“but then require”
Your Nick Gillespie is showing.
I should have sprinkled some SLDs around.
But then again, this would only apply to corporations. You don’t have to incorporate. If you want the benefits of state incorporation, you got to play by some of the state’s rules. You could be an LLC and all income is pass thru, so none is retained without taxation.
Good point.
We could at least return to the original law where incorporation required dissolution at the end of 40 years. That and/or your idea would discourage our current fascist state where governments (pension funds) own shitloads of shares of ostensibly private companies which is a massive market distortion.
I sort of liked the old corporate system where the life of a corporation was limited and so was scope of purpose to public works like roads and infrastructure, but things evolve, I guess. I see that corporatism is still alive and well in North America, which is a problem. The symbiotic nature of big government and big corporations are a problem, and led to the 2007-8 bailouts.
Childress, 72, said he was upstairs with his wife at about 10:30 p.m. when he heard glass shatter downstairs. He grabbed his handgun, went downstairs and fired multiple shots at the home invaders, scaring them off, according to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.
And- if this had happened in California, he’d more likely than not be in jail.
