I actually worked for insurance operations dealing with my company’s Little Rock branch. I met the underwriters, and others who worked there. They were not stupid people. The contempt the coastal elites have for middle America is one of their most despicable features.

Here’s the thing, though. Are they really, in any meaningful sense, “elites”? I mean, for a few bucks in wardrobe and a few hours in briefing, it would be amazingly easy to get a reasonably intelligent redneck high school graduate to pass as one of these people. I have yet to see any clear or convincing evidence that these “elites” are better educated, more worldly, more knowledgeable, or more cultured than the people they’re looking down their noses at. They simply adopt a uniform attitude and script.
It isn’t that they are “more” knowledgeable etc. it’s that they have other knowledge etc. They know about Broadway plays and the arts, you rubes know about NASCAR and can sing three generations of Hank Williams songs. And the sneering goes both ways, look at all the shit a certain well-haired reporter got for admitting he didn’t know how to change a flat tire, Look at how many country songs are about the superiority of country living. Perhaps the snobs are the ones pushing it, and the rubes are mostly just poking fun, but I see more people acting offended now where as they used to just laugh it off.

I seriously suspect that if I were to mention Aeneas and Dido in a college literature department, they’d think I was talking about an R&B power couple.
