Since May 2013 I have made note of the annual Herndon Climb at the US Naval Academy. The short version is that the first years must work together to scale a lard-greased (they’re claiming shortening this year) granite obelisk and put a hat on top marking the end of their first year.
This years climb was broadcast live by Fox5DC, and is airing live as I type (but will likely be over by the time you read it), so I’m gonna get back to that, but if you have any interest in lads slathered in grease, grappling in the mud with phallic symbols and each other to achieve something together that they cannot do alone, this might be an event worth following. Update: it took about 2:15/

I avoid the place at all costs, but sometimes you have to go. My license plate was stolen a year back and I had to go in person. I made the first available appointment, that was three weeks in advance. It was almost an hour wait. On the way in I passed the line for non appointments and asked a sorry looking soul how long he waited. 3 hours.

My local equivalent of the DMV (TX DPS) office has separate queues for things like renewals. There are separate lines for people taking their license exams, and the people who just need to do paperwork to replace their plates.
The last time I needed to go in person to renew my license I was in and out in like 10 minutes.
I know it’s a libertarian thing to rag on the DMV, but a basic reverse triage system really does make things run incredibly smooth.
I think it varies by state too. My local one in VA is better than some I’ve been to (Saturday hours, etc) – but in WA it was great – all registration is handled by small, local private companies/contractors and I only had to get a DL at the actual DMV (1 visit in 2 1/2 years…and it was an indefinite expiration license since I was active duty military).
Here in NYC, I have been very surprised by the speed and efficiency at our local DMV. Book appointment online, show up 5 minutes before the appointment, check in at wee computer kiosk and wait for a minute or two. Even the employee interactions have been polite and quick. I hate having to say this, but my NYCDMV experiences have been far better than those in Louisiana and all but two locations in Florida.
