Not sure how you get from $12 an hour to $18.75/hour to cover the self-employment tax, which is 15.3% or $1.84/hour on $12/hour.
Now, if you want take-home of $12/hour, that’s not apples-to apples with a wage of $12/hour, which still has @ 8% withheld for SocSec and Medicare.
So, yeah, I’m kinda with the guy flipping off the applicant on this one.

This is the tip of the iceberg. After 3 years and maybe 2-3 more Trump appointments on the Supreme Court we will be lucky if Manzanar isn’t up and running again, if slavery isn’t reinstated and the Handmaid’s tale isn’t used in US history classes. I for one can’t wait until the States call for a constitutional convention themselves and we see what good things Kansas or Texas has dreamed up. This last election was the big one and I don’t think there’s a way to come back from it now.

I don’t know who to believe any more, and I just can’t even..
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra today announced that California will prohibit state-funded and state-sponsored travel to Alabama, Kentucky, South Dakota and Texas based on discriminatory legislation enacted in each state.
“Our country has made great strides in dismantling prejudicial laws that have deprived too many of our fellow Americans of their precious rights. Sadly, that is not the case in all parts of our nation, even in the 21st century. I am announcing today that I am adding four states to the list of states where California-funded or sponsored travel will be restricted on account of the discriminatory nature of laws enacted by those states,” said Attorney General Becerra. “While the California DOJ works to protect the rights of all our people, discriminatory laws in any part of our country send all of us several steps back. That’s why when California said we would not tolerate discrimination against LGBTQ members of our community, we meant it.”
The states added to the list of states subject to AB 1887’s travel restrictions are:
Alabama: HB 24 was enacted on May 2, 2017. HB 24 could prevent qualified prospective LGBT parents from adopting or serving as foster parents.
Kentucky: SB 17 was enacted on March 16, 2017. SB 17 could allow student-run organizations in colleges and K-12 schools to discriminate against classmates based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
South Dakota: SB 149 was enacted March 10, 2017. SB 149 could prevent qualified LGBT couples from adopting or serving as foster parents.
Texas: HB 3859 was enacted on June 15, 2017. HB 3859, allows foster care agencies to discriminate against children in foster care and potentially disqualify LGBT families from the state’s foster and adoption system.
AB 1887 prohibits state-funded and state-sponsored travel to states with laws that authorize or require discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression or against same-sex couples or their families. The California legislation went into effect on January 1, 2017. (From me: Previous states in the travel ban include KS, TN, NC, and MS)

Well, the range of possible positions on abortion is indeed not binary.
We have two axes — being for or against abortion itself and being for or against choice.

Pro-abortion, pro-choice

Anti-abortion, pro-choice
Usually the debate is presented as 1 vs 3. Sometime you will hear people discuss 4, i.e. they don’t like abortion but will not interfere with other people’s choice.
You pretty much never hear about 2.
The problem is that 2 is in fact the only viable option at the moment, which in turn is because the world is vastly overpopulated and population needs to be reduced by at least 90%. And will be with 100% certainty, the question is how — we can do this the easy way (which involves forced abortions, sterilizations and infanticide) or the hard way (which involves wars, genocides, famines, natural disasters and diseases, plus irreversible collapse of civilization thrown in as a bonus).
None of that has anything to do with race though, especially given that the highest fertility and strongest pro-natalist and anti-abortion sentiments are to be found in the areas of the world with the fewest white people.

He called someone a ‘deluded lunatic’ who denies ‘the basic laws of physics’ for basically saying what you just did. I’m going with he’s serious and just a typical deranged Reddit technocrat.
Rick C-137
Physics? For real? GAH! These people deserve whatever world they create.
Gadfly
Malthusian ideas keep floating around because it has a germ of truth: there is a physical limit to everything, so there is a cap to how many people this planet can support. The problem with the Malthusians is not that they believe that there’s a cap, but that they believe that they know what it is and that we’ve reached it (or even will reach it). Given current population trends predicting a leveling off of population before we hit 20 billion, the Malthusian problem will be pretty much avoided. So yes, as you say, it has been debunked, but like all the most persistent bad ideas it will continue to find followers because there is some small shred of truth in it to which people can cling.
Rick C-137
Fair point, and I think that some people follow the logic you lay out, but I think a good few know that it feels right or sounds right so they appeal to it for their own totalitarian causes.

commodious spittoon
Congressional ‘pubs didn’t confirm Garland for the same reason Obama didn’t fire Comey: because it makes more sense to push these things off and fight about them later, to make a liability of them for your opposition. Obama could have retaliated and shitcanned Comey, and nobody in the Democratic base would have objected: he was political cancer, he cost Hillary the election (in their minds, anyway; Hillary and Podesta hadn’t yet crafted the Russia narrative), and he was suddenly beloved of Republicans who’d somehow forgotten his trespasses mere months earlier. But it made more sense for Obama to float that fireship into Trump’s harbor, in the event Trump won, and make Trump deal with the consequences. Otherwise Clinton would quietly replace him and nobody would blink.
Sure, Republicans could have confirmed Garland, hoping to head off a worse pick by Clinton, but they’d have had to deal with the wrath of their already incensed base, and in any event the pick would have been useful for political horsetrading under Clinton.

I hate that Malthusian BS, it’s been debunked so many times that one wonders after how it is even still floated by serious people without ridicule. (not saying the commenter is a serious person, just that I have heard it floated to many times to count by credentialed people when talking about future challenges.
He called someone a ‘deluded lunatic’ who denies ‘the basic laws of physics’ for basically saying what you just did. I’m going with he’s serious and just a typical deranged Reddit technocrat.
Physics? For real? GAH! These people deserve whatever world they create.
Fair point, and I think that some people follow the logic you lay out, but I think a good few know that it feels right or sounds right so they appeal to it for their own totalitarian causes.
Malthus is back.
Are we still sure there’s no peak derp? From DU, my new fav.
RUSSIAN.SLUSH.IT.REAL!
Although… Twitler, I am sooo stealing that.
Of course there’s no such thing as peak derp. I’m guessing devolution of intelligence at some point.
Twitler is by far the only good nickname they’ve managed to come up with. It’s actually clever, until Drumpf or the Cheeto jokes.
I think General Cheeto is pretty dece. But Drumpf is so unfunny it’s excruciating.
I got a laugh out of Darth Cheeto a few days ago.
I’ve seen cheeto the tweeto, meh. The left is good at screeching, not so much at wit
Twitler – not bad.
I still like Donny Two-Scoops. Its got that NYC borough vibe to it. I swear there was another nickname for Trump here recently that was also good, but I can’t recall it.
Trump spent… what, 1/3 as much as Clinton? He spent like 1/5th that of (@#*$@ Jeb!
watching ignorant people try and explain things to each other is painful.
You say painful , I say hilarious
Russian slush is ten times more potent than American slush.
well the russians spent that money at tractor pulls and NASCAR events.
fucking rednecks.
Well, no shit. They put quite a bit more vodka in it.
I think when you counted Trump + outside support compared to Clinton + outside support, the gap narrowed to Trump’s side spending only 1/2 as much as Clinton. Still, the fact that anyone still claims, with a straight face, that money is some irresistible influence on elections is laughable.
