  • Monday Afternoon Links

    I spent half the weekend cleaning house or doing yardwork, etc. a bit less than half was spent with relatives (mostly in laws) and a small fraction at my local taproom, trying to avoid the first two. So, I was away from the news quite a bit. Needless to say, catching up last night and this morning has been…ungood. Plus ungood. So the links you get from me this afternoon are going to be quite devoid of the the feces-tornado of the past two days. Needless to say, they will be disregarded and the links that will come avalanching into the comments can serve as your political discussion fodder.

  • Thursday Afternoon Links, Swiss-Style.

    Hoi zäme! I might have been working a bit too hard lately *eyebrow twitches/nervous tic* … so I am taking a few minutes off to do the Afternoon Links. Unfortunately, I cannot get things Swiss off my mind. So you all get some lovely Swiss links. Hopp Schwiiz!

    • I think they forgot to say “If you have a pile of francs.” Warning – another one of those surveys that might be a bit … cherry-pickish.
    • Could not outrun a glacier?! Note, they were found with identity papers on them…how Swiss.
    • HAHAHAHAHA! I am sure this is unrelated.

    Well, back to the fondue mines for me. I get a bit of a break, starting tomorrow – I might even do some Xtreme-nerd reporting from the WBC.

     

  • Foreign Footy – The Superior Rugby (Union) Edition

    I have often snarked about the superiority of Rugby Union over the lesser forms of foreign sportsball. We have already had a look at Rugby League here… So in this exciting edition of Foreign Footy I will illustrate the majesty of Rugby Union. What could be better than 15 athletes trying to move a ball to the end of the field and touching it down to score (OK, they kick through posts too)?

    How about when the other team is allowed to tackle you – and when you are tackled to the ground, you have to let go of the ball, and the action continues (a ruck).

    If they don’t get you to the ground or out of bounds – then the ball carrier turns into a beef bone being fought over by two packs of wolves (a maul).

    No NFL 3-5 seconds of action and a halt for 45 seconds or more.

    It just doesn’t stop – in this case, Welshmen never yield.

    In fact, the only time the action stops is when the ball goes out of bounds, a penalty is called or there is a score. OK, at halftime and the game end too, pedants…

    Oh – none of that blocking stuff allowed. No forward passes either. Run with it forward, kick it and chase it down or pass it sideways or backward to a teammate.

    When the ball comes back into play, it is either the Line-out (a throw in that would make NBA players wince).

    I slammed together a few links for you all. I have important beer drinking to attend, so any complaints about the quality of links is probably warranted.  Here they are, judge for yourself.

    In response to some interest in floating a few dollars to the people maintaining the site – we have established a Paypal (yes, I know…Elon Musk) means to do so.  Look at the right side or bottom of the page and you will see the word “Donate” – the link will be there. Also, one does not need a Paypal account to use Paypal.

    A couple of things, right up front;

    THIS IS NOT A TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION. A non-profit corporation runs this site – but it is NOT a federal 501(c)(3) corp. That takes a lot of fees, paperwork and gets the Feds all up in your business. So we said “no thank you”, and kept it smaller and State only.

    We have put a limit in place – trying to keep our paperwork and reporting burdens down, we do not intend to take in more than a few thousand (under 5, if you must know) in any year.  We are doing this not for Mammon, but for the Love of the Game. Well, and the groupies. Always that.

    If someday, one of you has Bill Gates money – we can talk. But for now, a small token of your appreciation is more than enough. Feel free to give zero too…we are libertarians, for goodness sake – this is voluntary.

    Sooo…anything happen earlier today? I have been kind of busy lately. Oh, one or two small things I can link to. Our theme….accountability (or lack thereof)

    • “I knew he was a Democrat, a pretty hardcore one. I know he wasn’t happy when Trump got elected but he seemed like a nice enough guy”. Well, except for the shootiness.
    • Congresscritter has a plan for that.
    • I hope this type of thing expands to EPA officials who poison rivers, BATFE employees who run guns to gangs, cops who indiscriminately hurt and kill…aw, who am I kidding.
