  • John McCain, Arizona Politics and Libertarians

    It's not a toomah!
    It’s not a toomah!

US Senator John McCain (R, AZ) was just operated on for glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. He has a roughly even chance of surviving for another year, three-year survival rate is in the single digits. Should McCain die in office or resign, his replacement will be appointed by the Governor of Arizona. One unique feature of Arizona law is that the governor must appoint a senator of the same political party as the senator being replaced. This appointment will last until a special election in 2018.

Current Arizona Governor Doug Ducey is a Republican whose term runs through 2018 and is eligible for re-election to a second four-year term that year. So it seems likely that Ducey will have to appoint a replacement for McCain. Ducey, a businessman prior to his political career, is no libertarian but does have some liberty-friendly positions on shrinking government and school vouchers.

Arizona is a mostly red state with some libertarian tendencies. Arizona legalized medical marijuana in 2010, but in 2016 rejected Proposition 205, Arizona Marijuana Legalization Initiative, by 2.64 percent. Arizona has some of the most gun-friendly laws in the nation. Arizona voters also elected Sheriff Joe Arpaio repeatedly.

McCain’s was last elected in 2016 and his term runs through 2022. The best outcome for libertarians is that Gov. Ducey will appoint a young, liberty-friendly senator to replace McCain. Given McCain’s prognosis, his replacement would have a good three to four years of tenure before seeking election. Such a senator would lack McCain’s baggage and track record, and could establish a name for himself or herself before standing for election in Nov, 2022.

Of the eleven appointed US Senators who have sought election since 2000, only one has failed election. There were an additional eight appointed US Senators during this period who did not seek election. This is, however, a rough metric.

When discussing terms of office I’m using the last full year of the term of office and discounting the few days of the following year when the term actually ends. Sources Consulted: US Senate website, Wikipedia, Ballotpedia, NRA-ILA.

Y’all aren’t going to receive a sports update from me as I don’t follow every sport known in existence like sloopy does, so provide your own.

The only person capable of getting the mainstream media to talk about something other than Trump.

In a sad attempt at winning back the working class, the Democrat Party released their new slogan which many find reminiscent of Papa John’s slogan.  At least they didn’t go with their original slogan.  Well, not openly at least.

Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park, committed suicide by hanging himself on the same day as Chris Cornell’s birthday, who also hung himself last May.  The two are reported to have been good friends.  The selfish, drug addicted piece of shit, left behind six children and a wife.

In “this surprises no one” news, a new Pew Research Poll shows that 47% of liberals say that someone being a Trump supporter would put a strain on their friendship versus 13% of conservatives who claim the same about having a friend who is a Hillary supporter.

The body camera footage which caught Baltimore cops planting evidence prompts a review of 100 cases which involved the officers who were caught.

Prefer my version of the links?  Please let sloop know in the comments. Oh, and a link to a song.

  • Thursday Afternoon Links, Swiss-Style.

Hoi zäme! I might have been working a bit too hard lately *eyebrow twitches/nervous tic* … so I am taking a few minutes off to do the Afternoon Links. Unfortunately, I cannot get things Swiss off my mind. So you all get some lovely Swiss links. Hopp Schwiiz!

    • I think they forgot to say “If you have a pile of francs.” Warning – another one of those surveys that might be a bit … cherry-pickish.
    • Could not outrun a glacier?! Note, they were found with identity papers on them…how Swiss.
    • HAHAHAHAHA! I am sure this is unrelated.
    • Hmmmm. What could be causing this?

Well, back to the fondue mines for me. I get a bit of a break, starting tomorrow – I might even do some Xtreme-nerd reporting from the WBC.

  • Foreign Footy – the NRL and AFL Updates

    NRL Round 20 Update

The National Rugby League is heading into the business end of the season (for a review of the NRL and an update through Round 16 see here).

    Remember me?

The League has now played 19 rounds with 7 remaining. All the teams have had their two bye weeks, the annual State of Origin series is over (the universe was kept in balance as Queensland won the last two games after losing the opener, taking their third series in a row and 11 of the last 12 series overall).

From the moment we step on the field of play we can identify our starting point, pathway and destination.

The end of the State of Origin also means club teams welcome back those players who were playing in Origin. Going into Round 20, although none of the 16 teams have been mathematically eliminated, some of them will have to face up to reality. At the bottom of the table, Newcastle, Wests Tigers, and South Sydney are basically done with Canberra, New Zealand, Gold Coast, and Canterbury needing to win most of their remaining games and hope for teams above them to lose. However, the latter four do have the ability to put together a run.

How could a team this fierce be “done”?!?!?!

Two points (one game) outside the top 8 teams which will contest the finals (playoffs), are Penrith with St. George-Illawarra and Parramatta the teams most likely to miss out if the Panthers go on a tear. It is likely the current top 6 teams—Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Manly, Cronulla, and North Queensland will all make the playoffs. It is less clear which will finish in the top 4 – which guarantees a second chance should a team lose early in the finals series.

More than half the Round 20 games have ramifications for teams fighting for playoff places but two of the most important will be Penrith vs. Gold Coast with the Panthers desperately needing a win to stay close to the playoffs while a loss for Gold Coast will basically end their season. Likewise, Canterbury face a tough must win game on the road at the Brisbane Broncos, made tougher as the Broncos need the win to stay in the top 4. The other key matchup is 10th placed Canberra, who also have to win, hosting top of the table Melbourne.

Although no one will be guaranteed a playoff spot after Round 20, it’s likely a few teams will be mathematically eliminated.

    AFL  Roundup 7/16-7/17

This weekend in Ozzie Rules the big match featured the top-of-the-ladder Adelaide Crows versus the 7th ranked Melbourne Demons. Adelaide didn’t disappoint (their fans), winning handily – 17 goals, 14 behinds for 116 points versus 10.10.70 for the Demons. Fuck you, Adelaide.

    Too little, too late…

2nd place Geelong won against Hawthorn, and although the result is no surprise, the fact that they squeaked out only a 3 point (13.10.88 v. 12.13.85) win against a team that’s been mediocre for almost the entire season was.

3rd place GWS Giants managed to snap their 2 game draw streak. (Draws are usually a rarity in AFL). They did so by losing. A resurgent Sydney Swans (6th place) continued its rise, defeating the Giants for the Swans’ 6th straight win, showing that the bookies predictions for their current year top performance were not the result of hallucinogens. Sydney’s terrible performance starting the year remains unexplained.

4th place Port Adelaide stomped on the N Melbourne Roos, as did 5th place Richmond on the hapless Brisbane Lions.

The West Coast Eagles took St. Kilda’s place as the last (8th) team in the playoff form, crushing Freemantle, while Essendon dealt with the Saints.

For Glib interest, the Western Bulldogs won against the Carlton Blues, although that didn’t move WB up the ladder (or the Blues down), and Collingwood beat Gold Coast, resulting in them swapping 14th and 15th places.

    We won!

  • Thursday Morning Links

Boy, do I feel stupid. I played golf yesterday and then went home to watch the Astros game. So I watched it, while flipping back and forth with the USA-El Salvador soccer match, until the 8th inning. I had my hopes up for a rally…then I noticed the “Replay” thingy up in the top right corner of the tv screen and realized it was daylight outside the stadium at 9:30. So I opened my phone, looked up the final score from the day game, acknowledged that I was an idiot and moved on with my life.

Speaking of the soccer game, the USA won 2-0, but played like ass on the back end. Do that against the Ticos on Saturday and they’ll get smoked. Also, El Salvador are the dirtiest bunch of fuckers I’ve seen in a while.

Bikes still racing in frogland. The Open is underway, and Spieth is off to a solid start this morning in addition to Stenson and Poulter. Its gonna be a fun week. Follow here.

Yesterday afternoon and evening were just an endless stream of serious shit happening. Let’s touch on some of it in…the links!

    Al Gore: charlatan

Al Gore: There’s still time to line my pockets, rubes avoid catastrophe. People are still buying the shit he’s peddling. Amazing.

So brave. So cutting edge. So … meh.  Why did you have to ruin a good show by coming back after all those years? And now you’re making it worse by being political and piling on?  Just count your money and stop. Please.

John McCain has brain cancer. The floor is yours to comment as you see fit.

Trump goes ballistic in NYT interview. Let me know if you find anything he said that was wrong, re: the Russian investigation/witch hunt. Because I read it a few times and I gotta say, he’s absolutely dead on.

Canadian government can suck just as bad as America’s. I just hope the people show up with torches and pitchforks when the government shows up to do their thing.

And I will close with pure, unadulterated impotent rage. This is it, folks. Boiled down to its essence. The most retarded ass shit you’ll read in over 140 characters all day. (TW: Salon. And I mean off-the-rails-out-of-his-fucking-mind Salon)

I’ll be eastbound and down today. Headed to Charlotte with my son for the AAU dive nationals. So I’m playing this. Wish me luck on that Lake Charles bridge. That fucker gives me an anxiety attack almost every time.

    Have a great day, peeps.

Hump Day! For those of you who have significant others or FWB or toys. I’m just othering the rest of you.

Here is person who is crazier than a runover dog. I sincerely hope that no government agency or court decision ever forces this person to sell books they find morally objectionable. I also will continue to order books from giant capitalist machines like Amazon because I personally think this person is wrong to avoid selling books that they find morally objectionable. Information wants to be free. Rather than making it interesting, just tell people they are free to buy it, but put a card in there with a website that refutes the information.

These shitbirds can do moral grandstanding all day, but can’t pass a budget to save their lives. This is why a guy who looks like well-fed bum is calling you limp dicks and getting traction with it.

…And the same jerkoffs kill the AUMF Repeal as well.

But this is great news. I love these medical miracles where we are able to reverse the negative effects of accidents on children.

And its been sort of crappy at the L residence. I went with some weird 80s blahs.

  • Wednesday Morning Links

People are riding bikes in the Alps today. And there was a crash, but everybody looks ok and the others got a nice respite before the first climb.  That’s the kind of up-to-the-minute breaking news you can expect at places.  Actually, it just popped up in the first story in my search. So don’t expect it here, really. And those of you that weren’t expecting it and are pissed about the spoiler: sorry about that. Elsewhere, The Open is less than a day away, thank God. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say the winner will be a first-time major winner again in an incredible finish that people will be talking about for quite some time (except UCS, who will not talk about it at all). And don’t forget that the USA takes on El Salvador tonight in soccer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup knockout rounds. Let’s hope they don’t play like they have so far.

In the baseball world, the Yankees and White Sox made a trade: Yankees got the better of it. The D-backs made a trade and look to be pushing for a playoff spot. The aforementioned pinstripes beat the Twins (sorry, Minnesodan contingent) and the Astros took out Monday night’s loss on the Mariners with style.  Rubber match tonight.

Well there’s a lot going on elsewhere, so lets unpack it in…the links!

I’m gonna explain with this first link why the American public doesn’t trust or respect the media. Here is the lede from the NYT: Trump and Putin Held a Second, Undisclosed, Private Conversation.  That’s their words, verbatim.  Now the first paragraph:

WASHINGTON — Hours into a dinner with world leaders who had gathered for the Group of 20 summit meeting, President Trump left his chair at the sprawling banquet table and headed to where President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia was seated.

Now, by “undisclosed” and “private”, they mean at a massive table with probably a hundred people around, many with cameras. And by “undisclosed”, they mean in public and announced as a formal dinner with other heads of state.  And furthermore, by “left his chair…headed to Putin”, they mean he swapped seats with his wife.

Why the hell would I trust the gray lady after this completely disingenuous headline and intro to a story? Why would I trust the parrots at CNN or MSNBC or NPR or everywhere else that breathlessly reported a very public and informal conversation as something nefarious?  I ask you, what credibility do these people have left?

    Suck it, peons!

    ::catches breath::

How do you get booed worse than the Mets? Catch a foul ball, apparently. Well, catch a foul ball while being a horribly unpopular asshole.

Whatever a “Reddit AMA” is, Chris Cillizza has one. And people are airing their grievances. And its not even Festivus yet. But he’s apparently a good sport. (TW: Slate, although they don’t go full retard here. Instead, they gloss over the real criticism he’s getting hammered with by people showing his lack of integrity and objectiveness over and over and over and over and over again)

Looks like there was another person at the Trump Jr meeting. This one linked to “money laundering” according to reports. That link is an interview he gave in 2000 about how shell companies are used to open businesses in Delaware.  You know, just like a shitload of companies do every year.

Court dates are not optional. And don’t punch horses!

A city council acts responsible with taxpayer money. Chamber of Commerce is outraged.

One of San Francisco’s newest residents.

San Francisco has gone to the (wild) dogs. You know, without their retarded gun control laws this wouldn’t have happened.

And lastly, Welcome to Italy! Italians hardest hit.

A pretty good three man band.

That’s all for me, friends. Have a great day!
