Not exactly, but it’s not great out there, either. At least my sainted mother, hunkered down in Del Boca Vista, seems to be riding the thing out, with her main complaint being that she can’t get her favored roast chicken because Publix is closed. “If the storm destroys Glick’s, that would be OK because I just don’t like those people.” No links to storm news, y’all know what’s going on. Well, one link, anyway.
My prog friends, who were flabbergasted that I didn’t see any substantive difference between the Team Red authoritarian and the Team Blue authoritarian, have been busy spinning this week, desperately, as the Team Red guy demonstrated that he can run up the debt in a manner identical to their heroes. And just as they thought it was safe to come out, this hits the news. Spin harder, folks, spin harder. I’m sure this is totally different because reasons.
And I’m sure that this was about racism.
Jews make sky booms. Women and minorities hardest hit.
Speaking of which, we get deeper into Syria because of their imminent threat to the US. Isn’t it nice to see the wise foreign policy of Obama and Clinton be respected by Trump? Also speaking of which, isn’t it nice that we’re getting in the middle of every tribal squabble there? And doing it so, so well. Team Red, start your spinning.
And Today’s Tune from the insanely wonderful Eric Dolphy and Charlie Mingus, with my favorite pianist Jaki Byard doing his hard-bop/stride fusion like no-one else could.
“And just as they thought it was safe to come out, this hits the news.”
It’s been out for awhile. Thing is, it was on CNN. Yet, CNN never re-ran it when she was running for President.
Huh.
Go figure. It’s almost as though they had some external agenda.

A police source said she wasn’t charged with assault because the cabbie wasn’t injured.
One rule for me and one for thee.
Then she perhaps shouldn’t be charged for battery, but still charged with assault.
In any case, I thought certain forms of speech were “literal violence”, so the “rules for thee and me” do, indeed, apply.
” Hours later, during his weekly National Action Network rally at the group’s Harlem headquarters, the preacher claimed the younger Sharpton was targeted by police because she’s his daughter.
“All I know is that you got four people in a cab, and there’s some altercation, and they find out two hours later one of them is Al Sharpton’s daughter, she’s the one that’s going to the precinct,” the firebrand civil rights leader told the crowd.
“If you’re my child or you’re related to me, you’re guilty until proven innocent. But we’ll fight that out in court.”
Maybe because out of the four people, she was the only one who took the driver’s keys? But please, tell us more about Tawana Brawley.
I wonder if that birthday party was paid for by “donations”?
Actually, I don’t really wonder.

Kind of like Kim Kardashian?

The articles are OK over there. Might wanna avoid the comments though.
I love the comments. I stubed my toe on the bed this morning. Is it the jews or the blacks?
ASHKENAZI HAVE AN AVERAGE IQ OF 115 !!1!!! Now do you see?!
Actually I think Cole is Jewish. And a partial holocaust revisionist, which may be largely for the lulz/attention.
“The SPLC list that ProPublica credits as its source contains ten categories of “active hate groups.” You can view that list here. Of the ten categories, the one with the greatest number of chapters is “Black separatist,” with 193 active chapters. Since black separatist groups are the most dominant on the list in terms of active chapters, of the 69 orgs that ProPublica pulled for its “hit list,” how many do you think fall into that category?
One.
One out of 69. The most dominant category on the SPLC list is the most underrepresented on the list of groups ProPublica chose to target. Here’s where the bias is. ProPublica took a list in which black separatists are dominant, and chose to target white, Christian, and anti-Islamist groups instead. This is how most media bias occurs. Not in “fake news,” but in selectivity. Which stories are covered, and which are buried. Which “hate groups” are targeted, and which are left alone. The group with the most chapters on the SPLC list is the Nation of Islam. Did ProPublica go after its tech providers? Of course not. Same with the New Black Panther Party. Why? Bias, of course, but also remember, we’re dealing with cowards here. Tofel and his clown-car-posing-as-a-newsroom knew that going after the Nation of Islam or the New Black Panthers could get them hurt. Ditto if they’d have gone after any Islamist sites.”
It’s just like Ice Cream guys.
Still doesn’t make sense. Do what ever the fuck you want, with whom(what)ever you want. Just don’t put a gun to my head and tell me to bake you a cake.
I concur. People are free to do as they will, call themselves what they want, etc. But so far it’s not stopped at individual action. It always end with legal enforcement of preference.

She doesn’t like what the science says so she’s just going to ignore it, at least until the diabetes takes the first limb.
Let me break it down to you. Government is the source of all legal authority. This also makes it the going off any type of authority. The question being asked then is this: when did government give science the authority to produce knowledge about fat people. We have all seem the climate science permits, but when asked, scientists fail to produce the proper fat studies permits.
A fat trans person, regardless of sexuality or gender, has to navigate the concept of passing as a fat person, because their fatness transposes gender norms as it is.
You can pass a moped for all I care. I’m not riding it.
I tough the joke was that it’s fun to ride but you don’t want your friends to see you
Yes, that is the original joke. A Bulgarian would’ve gotten my play off the original.
Is it really hard to pass as fat? Are there thin people out there who are buying fat suits to walk around in their daily lives?
Hell, I’m trying to become less of a fat person.

“For starters, “transfat” already means something else”
That term was appropriated to generate public disapproval of the transfat community.

Commies and tractors, it’s always about the tractors….
How did we end up with the narrative that communism is traditionally great for the environment? Simply that the end goal is a forced agrarian economy through poverty? On the way to achieving that goal, I don’t think communist states have particularly great environmental track records…
Communist countries have patently horrible environmental track records. Anyone who has ever visited or lived in one could tell you that. However, communist countries are excellent at virtue-signaling and that’s what really counts.
“I don’t think communist states have particularly great environmental track records”
That’s a bit of an understatement.

“Markets are useful for efficiently balancing a variety of needs and desires. they aren’t magic though – human values like safety and fairness have to be applied and enforced or the machine will run us over, or make the planet unlivable.”
When people talk like this, I know that they missed the entire point of “the market”. They can’t understand that it is emergent and composed of the competing and complementary values of all the human individuals who take a part. The just see: the world is not like I would want it, therefore the markets failed.
It’s an indicator that the person doesn’t understand or refuses to understand how bad the world can be. That utopian efforts always end in mass starvation or pogroms. Market driven economies, while imperfect and chaotic, are the closest to perfection that can be achieved. Save utopia for the afterlife.
Yes. Like this quote:
They seem to actually believe that, because there doesn’t appear to be a person steering it, it isn’t being steered. They don’t get it that, like you said, the steering is the emergent result of individuals’ behaviors. They think of individual behaviors as chaotic and uncontrollable, unlike collectives which have a hive-mind and all-knowing leader who can micromanage an (effectively) infinitely complex system.
The most oxymoronic phrase in economics is “unregulated market”.
It all stems from the labor theory of value. Markets are directed by money, which the “working class” doesn’t have much of, but should because they do “all the work”. Thus, it is unacceptable that, even though markets tend to give people what they want within their means, markets also give “the rich”, “the capitalists”, and “the bourgeoisie” what they want too. Even though everybody’s getting paid for their contributions, some aren’t getting paid enough and why should things that everybody “needs” have to be paid for anyway? Just take some of the unfair capitalists’ profits and use them to pay for the food, water, shelter, medicine, school, etc. It’s a win-win because capitalists can’t misdirect the economy and the money gets redirected towards labor, where it belongs.
What’s that? People are going hungry, drinking polluted water, living in ramshackle dwellings, unable to find any medicine, and are illiterate? Must be the capitalists’ fault, time to take everything they have.
safety and fairness have to be applied and enforced or the machine will run us over, or make the planet unlivable
It seems to me that the only unlivable places on this planet caused by human political systems are the places that had embraced communism or socialism.
Pay no attention to the man behind the iron curtain!!
Indeed.
I’ve never heard of a country that devolved into mass murder and starvation because they implemented the theories of Rothbard and von Mises.
That’s because von Misean and Rothbardian evils are always funded by plundering otherwise successful socialist states.

Lemme try. There is a difference between unaccompanied minors crossing the border in search of asylum and children of illegal immigrants that have lived most of their lives here. Everyone’s been discussing Irma for a week, how the fuck is it “OMGZ BREAKING NEWZ!11!!1!”?
Mom woke me up at 6 am and said she wanted to bug out. We agreed that I would stay and take care of Trixie and the house and then we loaded her up and went shelter hunting. The first two were full but the second one directed me to an elementary school that was only about half full. I got her and got her settled in and she made a friend right off the bat. I felt like I had just dropped off my kid at their first day of school. Mom is less than 10 miles from home so I am not sure she’s much better off but on the other hand the breakfast looked pretty good. Now it is just me and the dog.
OMWC, the roasted chicken from Publix is the best. I wish I had picked one up when I was there yesterday.
They really do regress back into children at times, don’t they? It’s your mom, take care of her and good luck.
I sold my house and moved in with her and Dad when Dad got really sick. After Dad died I stayed here. Some days are easier than others but I don’t have any regrets.
My mom is going senile, but even in her senility she has more sense that my Bernie bot sisters. Mom is in there somewhere and pops out time to time. Age, waddayagonnado?
With my mom the senility pops up at the weirdest moments. About a year ago she got upset with the cable company about something and wanted companies changed right then and there. Took me about a week to get everything switched over and she was furious the whole time. I get it changed and the next day I get a call from my brother up in Kentucky chewing me out for changing Mom’s cable company without her permission. So I switch it back and the whole time Mom swearing she never told me to change it. Stuff like that happens about once a month but the rest of the time she’s just fine. I guess it could be worse.
My mom is like that sometimes. Says she needs help, then when I show up to help and start asking questions for information on what needs to be done she says, “Oh it’s ok don’t bother if it’s a problem”.
I grin and bear it because mom, but sometimes it’s really annoying, and I check myself.
The worst part is getting annoyed and then feeling guilty because you’re annoyed. I don’t argue with mom no matter what. Sometimes it is hard but you just have to suck it up. I get aggravated because she calls my brother or my daughter and tells them just off the wall stuff and then I have to deal with the fallout.
Yep. It helps to think about all the shit she had to put up with me as her son. My mom is a rock and a Saint
You might be the best daughter ever.
Good luck and stay safe.
Stay safe. Sending good thoughts to you and mom today
What kind of dog?
Mix breed. Part lab part red coon. Seventy pound lapdog. She gave me this look when I came home without Mom and the went and laid down in front of Mom’s chair.
OK, I already love that dog.
She’s pretty incredible. She was my son’s dog so I’ve known her since she was a puppy. She’s thirteen now and has been with me for a year. Her and Mom are best buds.
Do you have anyone looking out for you…other than Trixie? I guess the people at the shelter know you are there alone?
My son is nearby but it is just me and Trixie for now. I left my address and contact info at the shelter. Only a couple of my neighbors left so we can all help each other if we need it.
I came out as fat to myself about five years ago

How Bullwinkle Taught Kids Sophisticated Political Satire
I forgot that it was sort of a variety show as well.
I used to catch Rocky and Bullwinkle on rerun as a kids. It was always pretty damn funny to me.
It was a major event in our household. My dad was intent on us being surrounded by excellent cartoons, and on TV, that meant Rocky & Bullwinkle and Beany & Cecil.
interesting article – thanks for the link!
I watched Rocky and Bullwinkle a lot as a youngster. I don’t recall ever making the political connections, but I loved me some good punning.
Mr. Peabody checks out Cleopatra.
It’s absolutely hilarious to watch as an adult. I have the whole series on DVD. There’s one where their jet runs out of fuel and Bullwinkle powers it by reading out of the congressional record—”There was enough hot air in that single volume of the congressional record to power a four-engine jet all the way around the world!”
I also like, “The most evil form of fundraising known to man, taxation.”
“… including “Peabody’s Improbable History,” wherein Mr. Peabody, a genius dog and his pet boy, Sherman, travel through time to make terrible puns.”
Great description. Loved that show.
“to be publicly and unapologetically fat is a political act”
This planted a memory of the morbidly obese diners I used to see at Golden Corral when I went there for lunch. I’d see them waddling around with plates heaped with food, and making trip after trip to the dessert bar. Best diet plan ever.
“Ugh, I’m not even hungry anymore.”
LOL – I mean, stay safe everyone.

Impossible Environmentalism: Green groups promote utopian fantasies
https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2017/09/07/impossible-environmentalism-does-not-address-sustainability-ted-nordhaus-column/570651001/
You would be hard pressed to find a better example of the ways in which contemporary environmental thought and advocacy are simply bad for the environment than the recent effort by Friends of the Earth to sideline the Impossible Burger, the first meat substitute that has succeeded in roughly approximating the taste and texture of beef.
In a world in which beef consumption is expected to rise dramatically, the development of meat substitutes that consumers might accept as tasting as good or better than the real thing is one of the Holy Grails for both addressing climate change and protecting rainforests and other ecologically critical habitat
And yet, at the moment that a Silicon Valley start-up has developed a palatable substitute for meat that many consumers appear ready to accept, Friends of the Earth has attacked Impossible Foods for producing a product that it claims could have adverse health effects on consumers, because the yeast that produces heme has been genetically modified.
There is no actual evidence that heme produced in this way might have negative effects. But for FOE and other GMO opponents, the absence of evidence does not constitute evidence of absence
How did that get published in USSR Today?
They aren’t so much pro-environment as they are anti-human.
The left isn’t about pragmatic policies, or even good ones. Just being holier than thou and zelotry. Who cares if your policy preferences lead to the death of millions.
No worries… when that argument fizzles they’ll just pivot to claiming it’s a gateway-meat. Ultimate goal is to meat-shame everyone until eating meat is “socially unacceptable”.
They’d be right. It is a gateway…. to eating less meat.
I highly doubt it. Every meat substitute I’ve ever had (when I lived at home with my vegetarian mom and brother) tasted like some foul admixture of fungus and cardboard. The only place I can tolerate fake meat is in my mom’s chili, and that’s only because the fake meat in that dish absorbs the flavor of the spices and thus becomes edible to me.
I think fake meat only tastes good to vegetarians because they don’t have the taste of real meat on their palate. Taste them side by side, and anyone will be able to tell the difference.

” Undocumented journalists from /pol ” – that was funny though
Ok. I was just thinking about this today. Could be a lot of fun – might just be obscure enough for a good troll. The DVD of the movie adaptation of “L’il Abner” is OOP, but you can still see it on amazon prime – great 50s musical, funny songs, classy ladies, good dances, etc.
A couple of the big musical numbers are centered on the possible destruction/removal of a statue of their Civil War Hero “Jubilation T. Cornpone” –
Any way we could work in a fake promo (maybe just on twitter – might try something this afternoon) – about students trying to get rid of his statue? Probably overthinking this but I’ll try and whip something up later.
Watch the movie, great flick.

Simmons claimed that the Enquirer “cynically calculated” that, in order to sue, he would have to choose between batting down a false claim and appearing “to maintain that there is something wrong with transitioning from one gender to another.” In a tentative ruling (the final ruling is due in a few days), Judge Keosian has determined that the latter is the more harmful concern here. Keosian writes that being called transgender, however falsely applied, does not meet the criteria for libel because, in the words of California law, the claim doesn’t “expose any person to hatred, contempt, ridicule, or obloquy, or which causes him to be shunned or avoided, or which has a tendency to injure him in his occupation.” In other words, transgender is not a shameful designation, and Keosian won’t risk making it one by ruling in Simmons’s favor.
Whatever, Man.

Let there be no doubt: the horrific damage wrought by Hurricane Harvey was an almost entirely man-made catastrophe, one fingerprinted by all-too-human neglect, corruption and denial. If we needed a reminder of the power of water to destroy an American city, Hurricane Harvey provided it. In Houston, a fast-growing metropolis of more than 2 million people, it wasn’t the wind that was so damaging, or a storm surge pushing in – it was just water everywhere, falling for days in biblical torrents and transforming highways into rivers, flowing into homes, killing dozens, sending tens of thousands of people fleeing for higher ground. It was a terrifying and deadly display of what happens when nature collides with urban life on a planet radically altered by climate change.
Who suffers the most? I think you know.
As always, it’s poor people and people of color who end up bearing most of the risk. “They not only have to deal with flooding in their homes, but pollution in water that’s contaminated when water floods refineries and plants,” Texas Southern University sociologist Robert Bullard told Huffington Post. “You’re talking about a perfect storm of pollution, environmental racism, and health risks that are probably not going to be measured and assessed until decades later. The fact is that laissez-faire, unrestrained capitalism and lack of zoning mean people with money can put protections up, and people without can’t.”
Fucking laissez faire capitalism will be the death of us all.
If only we were a communist nation, then we could all suffer equally!
Let there be no doubt: the horrific damage wrought by Hurricane Harvey was an almost entirely man-made catastrophe, one fingerprinted by all-too-human neglect, corruption and denial.
They never wrote a word on this “issue” before. Only after.
Well you can’t keep a crisis go to waste, even if you have to make unsupportable claims to exploit it.
Environmental. Fucking. Racism.
That is the apex of intersectional bullshit. It’s infuriating that anybody could be that mendacious. It’s just obvious bullshit made up to get progressives to nod their heads about how bad whitey is for Gaia – or whatever – when everyone knows it’s nonsense. Do these people get together at parties and just tell obvious lies to each other? How fucking perverted are they?
“Let there be no doubt”
Hmmm… That seems almost….. what’s the word I’m trying to think of here?
Retarded?
Presidentdouchespeak?
Coiffed?
Yeah, no.
*swoon*
Why are they blaming Houston’s lack of zoning for all their hurricane woes?
What difference would it make if some seaside property were designated as residential, commercial, or industrial? When there’s a building there, it’s going to get fucking wrecked. I’m just not seeing how zoning would have saved lives or property.
Yeah, the coast of SC has tons of zoning regs. I’m pretty sure Hugo did not give a shit.

All this fat talk is making hungry. Bacon and Eggs I think sounds good.
My Canadian bacon won’t be cured and smoked until later tonight, so no bacon for me this morning. However, I’m mulling over the idea of making potato pancakes with leftover mashed potatoes from last night.
We like to mix the leftover mashed with green onions, cheese, and spices, put it all into a souffle dish, make several small wells in the top and crack eggs into the wells. Bake until the eggs are set and the potatoes are warm. It is yummy.
Ooh, I’m saving that idea.
Oh yea. If I had green onions right now, I’d be doing that.
More fun at Equifax.

Some of these puns are falling flat
Really? All I see is measured responses.
Guys, give it a rest.
I wish I coda thought up a pun before OMWC squashed this.
That’s the treble with puns; they appeal to our bass humor.
I don’t know about that, egould. These puns really strike a chord with me.
I don’t care for the tone of this discussion.

“The Bad Science Behind Campus Response to Sexual Assault
The spread of an inaccurate science of trauma is an object lesson in how good intentions can overtake critical thinking, to potentially harmful effect. Many rapes go unreported because the process of reporting them and seeking justice can be miserable for the victim. That the desire to lessen this misery has guided many reforms to campus adjudication is understandable and appropriate—to a point. Campbell’s 2012 lecture sought to persuade police investigators to give victims, in the immediate aftermath of a sexual assault, some space to collect themselves, and to conduct a first interview in a way that’s neutral rather than hostile—laudable, common-sense goals. But common-sense goals, when dressed up by policy makers and victims’ advocates in the inaccurate science now widespread on campus, can be (and have been) easily expanded to serve the idea that virtually every action and behavior that might cast legitimate doubt on an assault should be routinely discounted—and that no matter what precedes or follows an accusation of assault, the accused is always guilty.
The result is not only a system in which some men are wrongly accused and wrongly punished. It is a system vulnerable to substantial backlash. University professors and administrators should understand this. And they, of all people, should identify and call out junk science.”

How much of this turnaround in Trump’s behavior can be chalked up to:
1. Congressional GOPe types not getting his agenda done
2. The purge of “outsiders” from his cabinet
3. Trump lacking principles and just going with the path of least resistance so he’s seen as “doing something”.
Thoughts?
I think it’s very simple. What boosts Trump’s image with the hoi polloi is “Congress can’t get anything done, but Trump gets shit done!” Nobody but us loony libertarians think that obstructionism = healthy politics.
Obstructionism is a double edged sword. I’m a huge fan when it comes to imposing new legislation.
However, obstructionism is not healthy when it comes to dismantling current laws and regulations. The establishment republicans have made obstruction to the reduction of the State their top priority. Their mask slipped with the failure to repeal Obamacare despite Trump’s willingness to sign a straight repeal with no replacement. It’s a good move by Trump to highlight their bullshit.
I would love to see Trump get shit done on 1) Repealing Obamacare, 2) Massive tax reform, 3) Repeal of an absurd number of regulations. The failure to do so and continued growth of the state is due to obstructionism.
To be fair, Trump and Congress are getting a ton of shit done on #3, and it’s partially because it isn’t politically scary to be anti-regulation. It’s part of the reason I think #2 will get done eventually, since there is bipartisan public support in favor of less taxes. Cutting the budget and welfare programs like Obama care, though? Scary scary scary, and “EXTREMIST!”
I agree on 3, but most of that is coming from directly Trump, not Congress. The WSJ editorial board hates Trump with a passion but ran an editorial where they said he has done more to reduce regulation from the executive-controlled bureaucracies than any president in living memory.
They’ve also run an editorial complaining that the congress Repubs are rescinding other regulations at a snail’s pace when they could blow through them (using that loophole I think Cato discovered). Reportedly, the Repub leaders are afraid of the optics of undoing a large amount of the regulations put in place by the Obama & co. Which isn’t surprising after the Obamacare failure.
Part of Trump’s planned tax reform is to remove the state tax deduction which will hit mostly wealthy blue state residents, so I don’t think the Democrats will play ball unless this is removed, though maybe some the rural ones will cross over.
There was an interesting article from Pew Research that said that the pre-Labor Day Congress was the most productive in 10 years, and that it was almost entirely passed-and-signed regulatory cuts. It does go to show you my two main points: that Congress is unproductive by design, and that yes, there has been quite a bit done to pare down the regulatory state.
I’m not sure. From the article it looks like only a quarter of the legislation was regulatory cuts, not close to a majority, but I may be misunderstanding. And those 14 passed bills are less than a quarter by some counts of what was eligible using the Congressional Review Act. It’s better than nothing, but I wouldn’t consider it a positive reflection of the Republican congress. Cato (I think) had to find the loophole and then the think tanks had to exert a great deal of pressure to even get those 14 through.
I don’t disagree that the system is designed for obstruction, but my original post was just saying that I think obstructionism is a flaw and not a virtue when it comes to reducing the size and scope of the government. Perhaps this is something the Founders should have taken into account, but I don’t think they imagined how massive the American gov would become.
Maybe something like a constitutional amendment that any law or regulation could be repealed by 1/3 of the House and Senate, with no signature required by the president, and it couldn’t be overturned for any reason by the Courts. One standard for adding laws and a different standard for removing them. Of course we have a better chance of hell freezing over than that happening now.
Clarification: When I say “hoi polloi”, I mean squishy middle grounders like some in my immediate circle. I sometimes think that they are useful idiots for the progressive long game.
He’s used to doing deals. Probably doesn’t have the patience for politicians who aren’t interested in doing anything. I think team blue has totally screwed themselves not addressing ocare. Is there anyone at this point that does not thing this gop congress sucks ass?
My issue with the “Congress sucks” talking point: it’s basically by design, no matter who’s in power. The reason Team Blue has rarely gotten congressional power post-Clinton is not because the GOP Congress is productive, but rather because lefty politics is all about individuals toeing the line for the group, while the right is more about the individuals being individuals.
Rolling Stone lavishes their special brand of praise on Senator Sorority Girl.
A decade ago, Gillibrand would have been an unlikely candidate to lead “the resistance.” Democratic colleagues dismissed her as “Tracy Flick.” Representing a largely rural upstate district, she was protective of gun rights, opposed amnesty for undocumented immigrants and supported increased funding for border security. But as a senator, she has found her way to more progressive positions – in some cases, complete reversals – by treating every issue as a women’s issue: from paid family leave, equal pay, and justice for victims of sexual assault in the military to gun control, immigration and jobs. “I want women to understand these things so deeply affect us,” she has said. “We should actually determine our votes based on who has our back on things that affect us unbelievably intensely.”
“She is completely unprincipled, save for her desperate overarching need for our approval. That’s why we love and admire her.”
To be honest, I can think of worse ways to spend an afternoon than giving Kirsten Gillibrand a tongue bath, as long as i could render her incapable of speech.
Albany is “largely rural”? Well, I suppose the district is fairly large but we should remember the sinkhole of political evil at its center.
Albany was in a different district. Her district wrapped around Troy and Schenectady too. Only southern Saratoga County is suburban.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:NY_Congressional_Districts_110th_Congress.png
I’m in what was the blue district below, gerrymandered to keep an incumbent Democrat. (Until 2010, when they removed districts they’d try to get incumbents to retire and then break up those districts. They couldn’t come up with an agreement after 2010, so judges stepped in and came up with saner redistricting.)
Is she the one who got into politics because her husband was murdered on the LIRR? I can rarely find Black Talon ammunition (and when I do find a box, it’s rather pricey) because of the knee-jerk reactions to that crime.
Gillibrand is possibly the most uncreative person in Congress. Makes her great at being a player for a TEAM, but nothing that will ever give her much cred for any leadership role for anybody.
Lester Holt was on NBC telling everyone that FEMA did a hurricane exercise for Tampa several years ago and 2000 people “died” so this means there’s going to be death and destruction greater than Katrina. Fucking idiot.
On the other hand they had some twenty year old in tights out in the rain. I’m not sure what she was saying because the sound was muted, but I think they should go to her for updates more frequently.
Got a screenshot of her for BP?
I’m afraid not. It’s Mariana Atencio.
We like to mix the leftover mashed with green onions, cheese, and spices, put it all into a souffle dish, make several small wells in the top and crack eggs into the wells. Bake until the eggs are set and the potatoes are warm. It is yummy.
Wow. That sounds awesome.
It’s really, really yummy. I like it with runny yolks so the potatoes get all yellow and delicious.
Best inadvertent example of FEMA being worthless- NBC reporter is reporting live from a command center in DC with FEMA lettering on the wall. If they were doing anything important, no way would anyone with half a brain allow someone to yack mindlessly at high volume with bright lights right in the middle of that.
Lester Holt was on NBC telling everyone that FEMA did a hurricane exercise for Tampa several years ago and 2000 people “died” so this means there’s going to be death and destruction greater than Katrina. Fucking idiot.
The model determines the outcome in meatspace. Don’t understand the Scientistic Method?
I usually start the season as optimistic as anybody, but after that dreadful offseason, there’s little reason to think the Redskins will do well this year.
They screwed the pooch on the Cousins deal.
We lost DeSean Jackson and Garcon.
Now the solution to our defensive problems (Cravens) says he wants to retire–just days before his second season?
I don’t know what’s worse–always expecting the Redskins to tank, even, despite a good start or always thinking that this year will be the year for the Capitals–and watching them tank in the playoffs, again.
I’ve been trying to find out what happened to Su’a. Something about an eye injury?
Seems to me that he just really does not want to play football anymore.
Diagnosis: the one guy you can’t trade or cut. Snyder.
And trust me, I’m enjoying the Schadenfreude.
What OMWC said. Snyder needs to follow Jerry Jones’s example, and figure out when he’s out of his depth.
OTOH, you could follow the Texans. Losers at home 29-7 to the Jags. 10 sacks given up—which is a record, BTW; even David Carr didn’t take that much of a beating. Those of you who had, “Halftime, Game 1,” in the Deshaun Watson pool, collect your money. He wasn’t terrible. Yay?
Go Rockets!
I’d blame Snyder in the past, but I think he’s actually been pretty good for the last few years. It’s just that it takes time to build through the draft, and we’ve had an especially hard time of it.
We drafted a franchise quarterback in RGIII. Unfortunately, his bones were made of glass, and he never really recovered from that injury in the playoffs. But that wasn’t a bad pick–still, it’ll set your program back if your one shot at a franchise qb blows up. Good thing Shanahan drafted Cousins as a backup.
You try to build through the draft–and then your #2 pick, the guy who was supposed to solve the problem in the middle of the field on defense, he decides he wants to retire after his first year in the league? Your first three picks are what builds your team. Everything else is usually for depth–if they’re still on the team three year later, they were great picks. The Redskins have been having trouble with first and second rounders.
That’s bad luck. Snyder has been sticking with the build your team through the draft philosophy for a good four years now–rather than trading your picks away for veterans. But he’s just having bad luck.
He had a bad coach in Shanahan, too. He was without a general manager in the proper sense for years, and that was Snyder’s fault.
But that problem has been corrected. I think we’re just in a development stage–we’re still two or three years away from having a competitive team. The coach probably won’t last that long. They way they played today–in their home opener–was an embarrassment. It was a pathetic display. Judging from today, they’ll be lucky to win five games.
Sometimes the problems are such that the CEO just can’t turn the buggy-whip factory around. Some of the greatest efforts are made in the defense of lost causes. I’m not sure there’s anything Snyder could do to avoid this season’s embarrassment, but you can’t keep a CEO (or a coach) around that just keeps losing–even if it’s not really the coach’s fault.

Hillary Clinton said being at President Donald Trump’s inauguration was “like an out-of-body experience” and that his speech was a “cry from the white nationalist gut.”
…
“He was quite successful in referencing a nostalgia that would give hope, comfort, settle grievances for millions of people who were upset about gains that were made by others,” Clinton said.
Pauley then pressed on: “What you’re saying is millions of white people?”
“Millions of white people, yeah. Millions of white people,” Clinton replied.
…
Asked about her infamous “basket of deplorables” comment during the campaign, in which she said half of Trump’s supporters are “irredeemable,” Clinton reiterated that thought.
“Trump was behaving in a deplorable manner,” she said, citing the “Access Hollywood” tape as an example.
“There were a large number of people who didn’t care,” Clinton said.
…
“I also had the support of my family. … My friends rallied around and were so supportive. I did some yoga. Tried alternative nostril breathing.”
And, she added, “Yes, I had my fair share of Chardonnay.”
…
At the faith event Thursday, Clinton said it was “excruciating” to try to write the book.
“Sometimes I would write a couple of pages and would literally have to lie down because it was so difficult,” she said. “But eventually it became cathartic.”

And now she has plenty of time to practice alternate nostril breathing and drink chardonnay.

I wonder why you lost when you declared half of the electorate to be evil.
Now, now- half of Trump supporters would correspond to roughly a fourth of voters. So it was only one fourth of the electorate she said was deplorable.

Clinton made her “basket of deplorables” comment at a New York City fundraiser almost exactly a year ago ― on Sept. 9. On Sunday, she said that while the remark aided Trump, she didn’t think it was a big factor in her defeat because his supporters “were already energized.”
“I’m sorry I gave him a political gift of any kind, but I don’t think that was determinative,” she said.

“Why aren’t I 50 points ahead?”
Every time Clinton talks she just reveals herself to be more and more incompetent.
“We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.”
“God bless the America we are trying to create.”
“Aww don’t feel noways tired. I’ve come too faarrr from where I started frum.”
“I hope, Mr. President, that we can pass a law that criminalizes flag burning and desecration. ”
“Let’s be clear: Islam is not our adversary. Muslims are peaceful and tolerant people and have nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism. “

From the beginning, Mr. Trump, Mr. Pruitt, Mr. Zinke and Mr. Perry — to name the Big Four on environmental and energy issues — have been promising a new day to just about anyone discomfited by a half-century of bipartisan environmental law, whether it be the developers and farmers who feel threatened by efforts to enforce the Clean Water Act, oil and gas drillers seeking leases they do not need on federal land, chemical companies seeking relaxation from rules governing dangerous pesticides, automakers asked to improve fuel efficiency or utilities required to make further investments in technology to reduce ground-level pollutants.
Considering the incremental gains from ever-increasing restrictions is just like replacing all the LED streetlights with piles of burning tires.
