  • What Are We Not Reading? June 2017

I know I have to consider the source, Fusion, the resurrected Gawker, that which is dead but may never die, but I’d be hard-pressed to come up with thirteen current books I’d be less interested in reading: immigrants, identity politics, Al Franken as the savior of American politics, Soviet apologia by one of the worst fantasy writers of his generation, transgender bildungsroman, and essays–the fancy sort of blogpost.

When the book about Afroculinaria and the intersection (that word, ugh) of slavery and food is the most interesting book on the list, you got a bad list.

  • Tuesday Morning Links

Its a dark day for many of our college baseball faithful here at Glibs.  I don’t know what else to say but that I’m sorry that everybody’s team seems to have been knocked out.  I say we all find an underdog and jump on the bandwagon! Davidson? Wake Forest? SHSU? Aw, fuck it. Let’s just watch MLB now. And by “watch MLB”, I mean watch the Astros win again.  At this rate they’re gonna have to start putting their magic number beside their name in the standings starting at the All-Star Break.

And how bout them Predators? They thumped the Pens to the point that Brett L. wondered aloud last night if they’d sandbagged like the boys in MASH before doubling the bets and putting Spearchucker Jones in the game. (if you don’t now what I’m talking about, get on Netflix and watch the movie, dammit!) The series is anybody’s now, unlike the NBA Finals, which I don’t see the Cavs coming back in.

I know the links are in there somewhere!

Alrighty then. I know only a few of you came here for the sports. The rest are here for…the links!

    War Machine

War Machine might be due for a name change. God knows the piece of shit will have plenty of time to come up with one. (And yes, I feel more comfortable calling him names now that he’s been sentenced for a loooooong ass time.)

Reality Winner is a Bernie Girl that has said a lot of crazy shit online. Maybe she’s angling for an insanity defense. The supposed leaker said she’d go to was on Iran’s side against Trump and called him a “piece of shit” for his position on DAPL. (A position shared, I believe, by Hillary Clinton up until it became popular to hate the safer move of oil underground as opposed to rail.) Anyway, I can assure you that her name, while peculiar, does not make her part of my family. Hell, she’s too old to be one of my kids. And we came up with way better names than that dumbass’s parents did.

Apparently, there’s no room for Islamophobic comments in Britain. Not even in the midst of a terrorist attack being carried out by…Islamists praising Allah. If this is real, it does not speak well for the future of the British.

Speaking of terror attacks being carried out by Islamists, looks like the suspects that carried out the attack over the weekend, but not the dozen other individuals quickly arrested in the attack, have easily been identified since they’re TV stars. However, according to the commenters on HuffPo here, its still all about white people and Donald Trump. (The TW is in the link, but the retardation within deserves a second one. BEWARE!)

Katherine Timpf bringing fashion news you can use (not really)

And with summer here, its time for guys to supplement the wardrobe of rompers they’ve recently purchased with another can’t-miss fashion statement. No spoilers. You gotta see this shit to believe it.

Go ahead and rock a little harder today. (The singer isn’t the eye candy you got yesterday. And for that I apologize.)

Have a hell of a great day, friends.

  • Monday Afternoon Links

    Happy Monday. Busy, busy, busy

This first link might not be safe for work (pixellated nipple), but I hope Sec. Mattis is planning on buying a couple of pallets of the magazine featured and dropping them into places where there are lots of frustrated young men who blame the West for not getting laid. (I also linked it, because its fun to see Yahoo! try to report on American flag wearing women in near undress on Hustler covers as straight news.)

“Intensive Boot Camp to Revive Men’s Primal Nature” (Spoiler: Not a Marines recruiting post) I’ll support the Universal Income when people are too poor to support bullshit like this.

On the other hand, I missed yesterday’s anniversary of actual courage. Go stand in front of a line of tanks in an authoritarian country, and you’ll never worry about wearing rompers again.

Americans appear to prefer the (unsporting) version of resistance to jihadist attackers to the British version. Lock and load.

  • Monday Morning Links

Man, the college baseball playoffs are all out of whack with the weather. Poor Rice made a game effort but LSU was too much. I noticed the Hogs staved off elimination and the Hoos moved to the losers bracket. I still have faith! And let’s all give a round of applause to Davidson. And start cheering for Vandy and Bethune-Cookman. Why? Because their opponents are (mostly) dicks!

In MLB news, Houston steamrolled the Rangers and are on a 10 game winning streak. They only need to win two more games before July 4 to be assured of a winning record at the All-Star Break.  That’s insane.

The Predators got their groove back, bad breath (perhaps) and all in Game 3. Game 4 is tonight, and is still a must-win for Nashville. I expect another bloodbath. And in the NBA, the Warriors throttled the Cavs in both Game 1 and Game 2 at home. We’ll see if the Cavs have an answer back in Ohio, but its looking like they have no answer right now.

Alright, enough is enough. Here come…the links!

Qatar sure has pissed off its neighbors. Is it a real crackdown on actual ties to and financing of terrorism? Or just more tribalist bullshit? You’ll have to wait and see.

    Spelling Bee Champ Ananya Vinay

I guess a CNN personality took time off from their normal agenda of spreading bullshit to throw out a little soft racism.

British officials playing the blame game after the latest pair of terrorist attacks. Unfortunately, they’re not blaming the pieces of shit that carried out the attacks or their warped ideology. They’re blaming tech companies for not doing “enough” to censor the internet or eliminate encryption. No introspection expected in light of fact that they were tipped off about the very people that carried out the attacks and did nothing about it. Nope! Its gotta be somebody else, not the lazy, ineffecient intel agents that completely ignored an credible threat.

In other censorship news, the British government said they’re not going to name the people responsible for the attacks or any of the other dozen extremist Islamist terrorists  picked up in the immediate wake of the attack until it is “operationally possible.”  (Read: when they fuck something else up so bad they need to toss these names out to deflect the deserved criticism.)

    Hah-vahd: Safe Space

In the last bit of censorship news, for the day anyway, private Facebook group for people that enjoy sharing memes results in Harvard pulling college acceptances to at least 10 incoming students. Jesus, I hate to think what dirty jokes or comments people my age used to say would result in for Generation Safe Space and their idiot enablers in college administrations.

Paris. London. Regret. Synths. This song has it all.

    Have a great day, friends.

A lot of the Glibs are distracted by the wedding of Grand Moff Serious Man and Kibby. I, however, am stuck many hundreds of miles away doing chores. So I am taking a break from yard-work in the 91 degree sunshine to give a few links for you all to mull over.

    • Of course Brexit = jihadism!

  • יום ראשון בבוקר קישורים

Greetings from rural New York state, where SP and I are encamped for the next week while I attend a technical seminar on “Measurement of the Booms Emanated By Boomsticks” in Buffalo. I lead an eclectic life. Well, enough about us, there’s much news to be commented upon.

The big news is, of course, bad driving in England. What still amazes me is the questions people don’t ask, prime being, “Why does this seem to be a mostly European phenomenon, and what can they learn from the US?” But of course, Europe has nothing to learn from the US, their embarrassing, uncivilized, bumpkin cousins.

    Somehow, this is Trump’s fault.

Stunningly, Slate realizes that government policy can lead to horrible results. Well, they realize it today, it will be memory-holed quickly. Of course, this is Trump’s fault.

None of this matters, the world will end shortly. Because of Trump, of course.

The Root has become a favorite hate-read. Today’s outrage is particularly delicious. This is, sous entendu, Trump’s fault.

In sports news, there are people who make you wonder, “How many times is it gonna take before you choose another line of work?” If only Trump hadn’t been at the bottom of this.

And finally, in News of Weirdness, the best golf course fight you’ll see all year. This wouldn’t have happened if not for Trump.

And now I’m going to take a tour of Beautiful Downtown Wellsville.

NB: Though I’m not supposed to mention this, several of the West Coast founders are attending a wedding today. Grand Moff Serious Man is getting handcuffed to beloved commenter emeritus Kibby. The officiant is jesse.in.mb. This is clearly Trump’s fault.

  • Not again… in Kabul. A short impression of recent events.

Reading this, I felt a sense of dread – not just because I am familiar with the terrible situation in Afghanistan, and knew how the dead from both the attack and the protest were innocents. Rather, it reminded me of 1992-1996.

Now that you see the protests and a ham handed reaction by the current central government, I am reminded of one of the Taliban’s advantages. When the Talib swept up from the South and Southeast of the country to take Kabul and most of the rest of the country – the populace was bone weary of the constant violence and accepted the immediate calm they brought in their wake.

A difference now is that the Talib are responsible for most of the attacks and violence, rather than prime assholes like the recent returnee to Kabul, Hekmatyar Gulbuddin. Other scum like the Haqqanis have chipped in too. But when you cannot even carry on a normal day without worrying about being blown up, you get to be more amenable to accepting whomever can give you security.

I am not sure who will come out on top of this new round of murder and chaos – but I am absolutely sure of the losers. The people of Kabul (and elsewhere in country) are 100% sure to lose.
